With 20 years of service with Princess Cruises under her belt, Caribbean Princess just completed her routine drydock at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo, Italy.

After a few stops along the Mediterranean Sea in Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, the newly refurbished ship will sail across the Atlantic to her new home in Florida.

The 16-night voyage on Caribbean Princess will depart Civitacvecchia (Rome) on November 10 and is scheduled to arrive in Port Everglades on November 26.

Port Canaveral will then be home to the Grand-class cruise ship with 6- to 14-night sailings offered to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

In April of 2025, Caribbean Princess will offer two Panama Canal sailings before repositioning to Vancouver for the Alaska season.

Then in September of 2025, a 16-night Panama Canal sailing will move the ship from California to Port Everglades, Florida.  The vessel will homeport in Port Everglades until a 13-night sailing that will begin in Fort Lauderdale and culminate in Port Canaveral in May of 2026.

The 3,142-passenger vessel received routine maintenance that included new upholstery, carpets, and technical upgrades.  With the ship on blocks work was able to be done below the water line as well as above it, but specific details as to the exact work done have yet to be announced.

A sister ship, Grand Princess, had the Skywalkers nightclub and observation lounge removed to improve fuel economy and stability back in 2011.

This iconic design of the Grand-class vessels has been a controversial topic among Princess cruise fans, but so far it looks like this “shopping cart handle”– as some call it — will remain.

Explorer Of The Seas Hit By Sudden Wave Causing Dramatic Tilt

On 7th November 2024, Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas was unexpectedly hit by a sudden squall, resulting in hurricane-force winds that caused a massive wave, resulting in the ship tilting dramatically.

Explorer of the Seas squall tilt

The sudden tilt caused chaos onboard, as loose items were sent flying. As a result, at least one person was injured and the ship had to turn back to the Canary Islands to drop them off, before it could resume its transatlantic voyage.

Guests were asked to return to their cabins after the incident for three hours, so that a full ship count of passengers and crew could be taken.

You can see the tilt of the ship here, as guests slide along the floor:

The squall, characterised by a sudden gust of intense wind or a localised storm, struck the ship with little warning. Passengers described scenes of disarray, with items flying across dining areas and individuals sliding across corridors.

Explorer of the Seas is engineered to withstand rough conditions, featuring design elements that enhance its stability and safety. The crew’s training and preparedness for such events were crucial in managing the situation.

Several cruisers onboard the ship have posted updates to social media, unanimously praising the crew for their communication and quick action.

These guests shared their thoughts plus some photos of the damage:

It’s now anticipated that the ship will complete her transatlantic cruise on 17th November, reaching Miami three days later than originally scheduled.

Once that’s confirmed it will likely have a knock-on effect on the 10-day Caribbean cruise set for 14th November.

While it can’t be embedded, this video on Facebook shows more of the damage.

If the ship is damaged (and there are rumours of stabiliser damage) then repairs may be needed, although for now it sounds like the ship has managed to escape without significant issue.

Electric Sunsets Returns Plus Marella Announces Brand-New Themed Cruise

Marella Cruises has announced the return of its popular “Electric Sunsets” themed cruise, this time with a fresh 90s vs 00s theme, set for November 2025.

Marella Electric Sunsets and Country Rhythms

The UK-based cruise line, part of TUI, also revealed plans for a brand-new “Country Rhythms” cruise in February 2026. Both themed cruises will be available for booking from 14 November 2024.

In its fifth year, Electric Sunsets is introducing the new 90s vs 00s theme, offering a unique music showdown at sea.

Guests can look forward to performances by top acts including B*Witched, The Honeyz, and DJ SASH!, alongside Ibiza in Symphony, a 10-piece orchestra. Additional artists will be announced in 2025.

This three-night adult-only cruise, tailored to fans of 90s and 2000s music, will take place aboard Marella Voyager from 1 to 4 November 2025. Departing from Palma, the journey includes stops in Valencia and Cartagena, ending in Malaga.

In February 2026, Marella will launch its first-ever country music cruise, “Country Rhythms,” featuring “The Dolly Show,” the UK’s top Dolly Parton impersonator.

Country music enthusiasts can expect themed entertainment such as line dancing classes, a new production show, and a best-dressed competition.

“We are thrilled to be announcing the launch of our themed cruises for 2025 and 2026. We are especially excited to be revealing our first ever country themed cruise, ‘Country Rhythms’ alongside Electric Sunsets, which has become synonymous with our cruise line.

“Thanks to our recent market research, we believe these tailored themed cruises connected to country music and 90s/00s will encourage those who are new to cruising to consider Marella Cruises for their future holidays. These themed cruises will also offer returning customers a refreshing alternative to our regular Mediterranean sailings, adding a unique experience to their journey.”

Chris Hackney, Managing Director of Marella Cruises

The Country Rhythms cruise will offer two adult-only sailings aboard Marella Explorer 2.

The first, a four-night cruise, departs on 5 February 2026 from Malaga, with stops in Gibraltar, Arrecife, and ending in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

The second, a five-night cruise, will cover the same route but conclude in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

With these exciting itineraries, Marella Cruises aims to attract a new wave of guests looking for unique themed cruise experiences.

Urgent Medical Airlift Conducted for Crew Member on Celebrity Edge Cruise Ship

On 5th November 2024, a critical medical airlift was conducted for a crew member aboard Celebrity Edge, a cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises.

The incident took place off the coast of New South Wales, Australia.

The Celebrity Edge, a 130,818-gross-ton vessel, was on a 4-night roundtrip voyage from Sydney to Hobart.

The airlift operation was a coordinated effort involving the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

A rescue helicopter, supported by an additional aircraft, was dispatched to ensure the crew member received the necessary medical attention.

The crew member’s medical condition exceeded the capabilities of the ship’s onboard medical facilities, necessitating the urgent airlift.

While cruise ships are equipped with medical professionals trained to handle various health issues, certain emergencies require external intervention for adequate care.

In cases where onboard medical capabilities are insufficient, cruise lines work with maritime authorities to arrange air or sea rescues.

It’s the second sea rescue in just two weeks for cruise ships operating out of Australia.

On 24th October 2024, the Pacific Explorer had a guest onboard who suffered a heart attack, and had to be rescued and transported to Cairns Hospital.

And just two weeks prior to that, the same ship required a medical evacuation for another passenger onboard.

Med evacs are typically rare on cruises but there have been increasing reports of them recently, including back-to-back rescues on the same ship within two days.

The Best Adult-Only Cruises

Cruising is best enjoyed surrounded by like-minded people, and an atmosphere that allows you to relax and unwind. After all, that’s what being on holiday is all about, isn’t it?

Oceania adult guests

For some, this means ruling out any chance of children taking over pools or charging around buffets while you’re trying to enjoy your holiday.

Thankfully, there are adult-only options to cater to this kind of getaway. They range from fully adult-only (which only allow those over a certain age aboard), to sailings that allow young cruisers but are aimed at a more mature clientele.

The Best Adult-only Cruise Lines

There are currently only four cruise lines which are truly adult-only. These offer a fully adult-exclusive experience while you sail, with no kids’ clubs or children’s entertainment.

Here are the cruise lines to choose from when you’re seeking a fully adult-only cruise, whether you’re a single cruiser or seeking a romantic honeymoon cruise.

1. Saga

Me with Saga cruise ship
I’m too young for this ship!

Strictly 50+ | All-inclusive British-style cruising | Great for couples and friends

British cruise line Saga is renowned for limiting access to their cruises to those 50 years and older. (But you can travel if you’re 40 or older, as long as you have a 50+ companion!)

Offering a boutique cruise experience, Saga’s sailings are all-inclusive with all-balcony ships.

Saga's Spirit of Adventure Standard Cabin

Saga has two ocean ships in the fleet: Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure. Both are small ships with no-fly itineraries, departing from Portsmouth, Dover and London Tilbury.

The ships offer an all-inclusive experience. Complimentary chauffeur service, wines, premium spirits, all dining, tips, Wi-Fi and even travel insurance are all included in the price. There are no more than 987 guests on board at the same time, so you can enjoy some peace as you sail with friends or a couple.

Saga's complimentary chauffeur service

This is not one for young adults looking for a fun cruise, but can be a great peaceful escape for the experienced cruiser.

2. Viking

Viking Saturn

Strictly 18+ | All-inclusive luxury cruising | Great for couples and friends

Viking has always been a fully adult-only cruise line, limiting its cruises to those aged 18 and above from the moment it debuted in 2015.

The cruise line has eight ships in the ocean fleet, with each ship boasting a destination-focused luxury experience. Features range from onboard lectures and enrichment classes, to tours ashore that focus on authentic learning encounters and culturally enlightening experiences.

Classed as the world’s leading small ship cruise line, Viking prides itself on being the ‘thinking person’s cruise’. It offers thoughtfully curated itineraries designed to enhance your travel experience. Think of visits to renowned museums and notable landmarks, alongside a ship-wide library to delve into during your days at sea.

Viking Sea and Viking Star meet in Santorini

Ships in the Viking fleet are designed with Scandinavian influences. Social spaces are sophisticated and relaxing, while dining venues offer destination-focused dishes and award-winning service. The accommodations all boast verandas too, meaning you always have a private outdoor space to unwind.

3. Virgin Voyages

Scarlet Lady

Strictly 18+ | Luxury cruising | Great for friends

A more recent contender for the adult-only category is Virgin Voyages, which launched in late 2021. This cruise line was born out of the desire to create a cruise line which redefines adult-only cruising.

From the décor of the ship and its style of stateroom design to the dining offerings and entertainment, Virgin Voyages is a unique cruise line for adults seeking a getaway of their own.

Virgin Voyages The Wake

There are currently three ships in the fleet, with a fourth joining in 2025. All the ships are the same, but focus on different destinations throughout the year. These include the Caribbean where you can sail to the cruise line’s private island, as well as Europe and the Mediterranean.

Onboard, Virgin Voyages offers the Always Included Luxury package, which is part of your cruise fare from the get-go.

This features dining in all 20+ eateries, entertainment, gratuities, Wi-Fi, unlimited fitness classes, soft drinks and water. Alcoholic drinks can be purchased as and when you need on board, or via the line’s Bar Tab which is a pre-paid account you can manage through the cruise line’s app.

Cruise Lines with Adult-only Ships

Some cruise lines have a selection of family-friendly ships, plus some ships which are exclusively for adults. If you choose one of these adult-only ships, you can be sure that there won’t be a child in sight.

4. P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises ship

Two adult-only ships | British-style cruising | Great for couples

There are only two ships in the P&O Cruises fleet which are fully adult-only: Aurora and Arcadia. Both of these are about to undergo thorough refurbishments.

These ships offer the British market an option for sailing child-free, while still enjoying the signature P&O Cruises experience.

Look forward to afternoon teas, gastro-pub settings, and chef-inspired menus from renowned UK chefs such as Marco Pierre White. All while you set sail to destinations across the globe, typically from the UK port of Southampton.

Marco's Beef Wellington

Both adult-only ships offer a classic cruise experience. Your accommodation, dining, gym access, theatre shows, live music and comedy acts are all included in your fare.

Masquerade on Aurora

Enjoy dining and bars tailored to British tastes as well as multi-tier theatres, spa treatments and entertainment for everyone. There are sailings to destinations including the Norwegian fjords, Caribbean and Scandinavia.

5. Marella Cruises

Marella Explorer 2

One adult-only ship | All-inclusive British-style cruising | Great for couples and friends

Marella Cruises is another cruise line which offers an adult-only ship within its fleet. Marella Explora 2 can carry 1,814 guests, and has been sailing for the cruise line since 2019.

It’s one of the newest ships in the fleet, and has a huge offering for enjoying life onboard. With nine bars, nine restaurants, a pool and plenty more exciting facilities, it’s ideal for those looking for an adult-only option.

Latitude 53

The ship is exclusively reserved for those aged 18 or over. Your cruise fare is also all-inclusive from the start, with flights, transfers, luggage, food, drinks, tips and service charges all included as standard.

It’s not cheap, but the value you get for your fare makes it one of the lower-priced options when everything is taken into account.

Marella drinks

Daily entertainment varies from early morning exercises to West End-style shows. There’s also a wide range of dining venues, from buffet-style to waiter service restaurants.

The Best Cruise Lines Not Aimed at Families

As well as cruise lines that are fully or partially adult-only, there are also options if you’re looking for something more specific. Luxury cruisers or retirees may opt for one of these cruise lines, which aren’t marketed as adult-only but don’t tend to attract families or young children.

Multi-generational cruisers might also seek getaways with their older children, while avoiding more family-oriented cruise lines and ships.

Luxury Cruises Aimed At Adults

6. Azamara

Azamara Pursuit

Aimed at adults | Premium-luxury cruising | Great for couples and friends

Azamara is a great option for those who are looking for a little indulgence. It’s a premium-luxury cruise line which boasts small-ship, destination-focused itineraries.

Azamara Italy Cortina Dolomites

While the cruise line doesn’t ban children entirely, the onboard lifestyle is focused on adults, with no facilities planned for entertaining kids.

There are four ships in the Azamara fleet, each carrying around 700 passengers and meeting a semi-all-inclusive standard.

Azamara Aqualina

All tips, main dining, non-alcoholic drinks, selected spirits, beers and house wines are included in your fare, as well as self-service laundry and the signature AzAmazing Celebrations. Additional charges come with excursions, transfers, premium spirits and alcohol, Wi-Fi and speciality dining venues.

7. Oceania Cruises

Oceania Riviera

Aimed at adults | Premium-luxury cruising | Great for couples and friends

Another premium-luxury cruise line that focuses on the adult experience is Oceania Cruises. Couples and friends can enjoy life on board each of their seven ships. Wi-Fi, dining and non-alcoholic drinks are all included as standard.

Oceania Toscana

The cruise line is also renowned for having the best food at sea, with gourmet dining experiences crafted by celebrated chefs across the globe.

Oceania Tuscan Steak Filet

Enjoy unique culinary dishes at every dining venue, from internationally inspired poke bowls to authentic Italian pasta and classic steakhouse fare.

8. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Seven Seas Splendor

Aimed at adults | All-inclusive, ultra-luxury cruising | Great for couples

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is the most inclusive cruise line offering luxury sailings. All tips, drinks, dining, shore excursion options, Wi-Fi, flights and transfers are included in your fare on any of the line’s six ships.

Seven Seas Grandeur

The fleet ranges in capacity size from 490 to 750 passengers, while offering one of the best staff-to-guest ratios at sea, so you can be assured of plenty of space to relax and enjoy the all-inclusive experience.

Regent Suite

The cruise line allows children on board, with a Club Mariner programme designed for age groups between 5 and 17. However, these are only on selected sailings. Families tend to favour sailings to Alaska and Europe in the summer. So opt for cruises outside of these time frames and destinations if you want something suited to just adults.

9. Silversea

Silversea cruise ship

Aimed at adults | Ultra-luxury cruising and expeditions | Great for friends and couples

Silversea is another luxury cruise line aimed at adults, while not being exclusively adult-only. The line offers luxury cruising across all ten of its ships, four of which are part of the Expedition Class.

Capacity is up to 608 passengers, and you can experience small-ship cruising to destinations including South America, the Mediterranean, the Polar Regions and Alaska.

Silversea guest drinking white wine in Mykonos

Children are allowed on sailings, though itineraries operating outside the summer are typically child-free. Even more so if you opt for longer duration sailings, such as world cruise sectors of 50+ nights.

Silver Endeavour The Restaurant

Your cruise fare includes most things, though speciality dining and premium drinks are charged extra during your sailing.

10. Cunard

Cunard Queen Elizabeth

Aimed at adults | Traditional luxury cruising | Great for older families and couples

Cunard isn’t strictly adult-only, but does target couples and friends over families and children.

Life on board varies from Champagne toasts and daily afternoon teas to gala dinners and ballroom dancing, so there’s little room for kids’ activities and entertainment.

Cunard guests on deck

Décor on the ships is traditional, with dark woods and art deco features. Entertainment ranges from daily quizzes and line dancing to evening cabaret and ballroom dancing.

Guests enjoy accommodation, fine dining, daily activities and entertainment, and great service as standard in their fare.

Additional extras include tips, alcoholic drinks, spa treatments and shore excursions. There are kids’ clubs on the ships that offer activities to suit a range of ages, but the cruise line doesn’t provide any other facilities outside of these to cater to children.

Cunard Queen Victoria's Spa

Cunard has a history stretching back to 1847 when the first ship began sailing, but now has three ships in the fleet with a fourth on the way. It’s a great choice for cruisers looking for an alternative to adult-only ships, while still enjoying an almost child-free holiday.

Cheap Cruises Aimed At Adults

If you’re looking for a budget cruise which probably has no kids on board, then these are a great choice.

In the school holidays, you’re likely to see some multi-generational groups with grandparents bringing the whole family along. But during term-time, you can expect an adults-only experience.

11. Ambassador Cruise Line

Cruise Mummy with Ambition cruise ship

Aimed at 18+ | British-style cruising | Great for couples and friends

Ambassador has only recently come onto the scene with an authentically British feel and two ships in the fleet, the first of which only launched in 2023. The cruise line offers a premium no-fly cruise experience for the 50-plus audience.

Ambition restaurant

The cruise line operates as primarily adult-only sailings for those aged 18 years and over, but they do offer a few multi-generational cruises during peak school holidays. There aren’t any children’s facilities on the ships, but you can avoid these sailings if you’re seeking an adult-only option.

Cruising with Ambassador includes all your dining, cocktail parties and gala dinners, as well as entertainment and daily activities and even spa access. There are drink packages available to add on too, so you can make your sailing all-inclusive as well as child-free!

Ambassador loungers

Ambassador is good for singles too. Every cruise has some cabins set aside for solo passengers with no single supplement to pay.

Suggested read: Who Owns Ambassador Cruise Line?

12. Fred. Olsen Cruise Line

Borealis in Liverpool

Aimed at adults | Traditionally British-style cruising | Great for older families and couples

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is an option for those seeking an adult-focused cruise on an intimate scale, with small ships catered to traditional cruising.

There are only three ships in the fleet. Each features spacious lounges and enriching entertainment, as well as multi-course dining venues and daily activities with adults in mind.

Braemar, Observatory Bar

Fares include your accommodation, dining, self-service tea and coffee, afternoon tea, in-cabin dining and snacks, evening entertainment, use of leisure facilities, onboard activities, luggage porterage and flights for fly-cruise options. Drink packages are also available.

Borealis indoor pool

Fred. Olsen does operate a kids’ club on selected sailings during peak-time holidays. The Little Skippers Club is for children aged between 5 and 11 years. If you’re sailing with children over 11, they are welcomed aboard but not into the kids’ club.

The Bottom Line

Adult-only cruising has various options for cruisers looking for a kid-free holiday. But you don’t always have to opt for the 18+ cruise lines, as there are many which don’t attract children whatsoever.

If bumping into a toddler at breakfast or listening to a mopey teenager is the stuff of holiday nightmares for you, the fully adult-only cruise lines would be ideal. All-inclusive options for these include Viking and Saga, while Ambassador is great for retirees and Virgin Voyages brings the party atmosphere for a younger audience (but only to 18 years)!

There are cruise lines too which feature kids’ clubs, but without all the bells and whistles you see on a typical family-friendly ship. These offer children their own space to make friends and holiday memories, while you enjoy a quieter afternoon by the pool or a peaceful meal for just the two of you.

Cruise lines including Cunard and Fred. Olsen are ideal for these types of sailings. They cater to the multi-generational market too, so grandparents and grandchildren can enjoy cruising together.

The more luxurious cruise lines aren’t typically strict on ages, and some even have their own kids’ programmes too. However, these feature little to no children’s facilities outside of their programmes, so don’t cater too well to younger families.

Cruise lines including Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Azamara and Oceania Cruises are all aimed at adult cruisers seeking adventure, fine dining and inclusive itineraries for enriching holidays.

The Ultimate Guide to Cruise Drinks Packages

Every time you book a cruise, you have one very important decision to make: “Should I get the drinks package or not?”

Cruise drinks packages can cost anywhere between £25 and £106 ($30 to $129) per day for all-inclusive alcoholic drinks. The price depends on which cruise line you sail with and which package you choose.

What Makes Me the Expert on Cruise Drink Packages?

I’ve worked in the cruise industry since 2015, and I’ve taken a lot of cruises. Although I do love a drink (or seven), I’m also pretty frugal. Every time I book a cruise, I do the maths and work out whether to buy the drinks package or not. So far, I’ve bought one on 50% of my cruises.

This article will help you to work out whether the drinks package is worth it for your cruise. You’ll find information on drinks prices, package prices, and what different drinks packages do and don’t include.

I’ve also built a free Cruise Drinks Package Calculator, to help you work out whether to buy one or not.

Plus, find out how I once saved over £400 by bringing my own drinks on board (and no, I didn’t break any rules!).

Are Cruise Drink Packages Worth It?

If you like to drink a lot on holiday, then drinks packages are almost always worth it.

But what if, like me, you spend a not-inconsiderable amount of time with one eye on your children, making sure that the little angels don’t take off their armbands and jump into the deep end? Then you might not be able to drink as much as you want to. So, what’s a parent to do?

Of course, with late-night kids’ clubs and babysitting, it can be fabulous to unwind with a few glasses of vino or a cocktail in the sun. And if you’re lucky enough to have a balcony, a nightcap is a lovely way to end the night once everyone’s tucked up in bed.

Even if you’re teetotal, there are soft drinks packages which can be great value for money. So, don’t write off the idea of a beverage package just yet.

How To Decide if Your Cruise Drinks Package Is Worth It

To do the maths on your drinks package, you’ll want to know four things:

  1. What different drinks packages are available on your cruise? Some cruise lines offer up to five different packages, with different things included.
  2. How much are drinks packages? Some cruise lines have fixed prices, while others vary on each sailing and can go up or down before the departure date.
  3. How much are drinks on your ship? Some cruise lines charge pub prices, but others charge more than double that.
  4. How many drinks do you plan to have each day? You’ll drink more on sea days than days spent ashore, so this should be factored in.

Now, if all this seems like a bit too much maths, don’t worry! That’s where the drinks package calculator will come in handy. Just enter your email in the form below and I’ll send it to you.

There are a couple more things you need to consider:

  1. What drinks are free on your cruise?
  2. What drinks aren’t included in the drinks package?

If you like to drink tea, coffee, fruit juice, squash, ice tea, milk and water, it’s possible that you won’t spend a penny on drinks even without a package. Certain drinks are always free of charge.

Drinks packages don’t cover everything. Don’t get caught out by ordering bottles of wine if your package only covers glasses. And don’t raid the minibar unless you know it’s included.

Cruise Line Drinks Packages

The details of drinks packages are different for each cruise line. For that reason, I’ve written detailed guides to drinks packages for each of the following cruise lines.

Detailed drinks package guides for each cruise line:

For the other cruise lines, you’ll find all the drinks package information on this page.

Cruise Drink Package Price Comparison

The following table shows the price of the standard drinks package (when booked pre-cruise) for each cruise line.

Note that many cruise lines offer a choice of packages, so there may be cheaper packages (such as wine and beer only packages) as well as more expensive packages (which include premium drinks).

Cruise line Drinks package price (per day)
Ambassador Cruise Line £33 to £75
Carnival $70 / £54
Celebrity Cruises $89 to $109 (sometimes included)
Costa Cruises $35 / £30
Cunard $70 / £57
Fred. Olsen Cruise Line $30 / £25
Holland America Line $55 / £45
Marella included
MSC Cruises $42 to $85 / £35 to £71
Norwegian Cruise Line $109 to $138 / £89 to £113
P&O Cruises $75 / £60
Princess Cruises $65 to $85 / £52 to £69
Royal Caribbean $63 to $115 / £47 to £92

Disney Cruise Lines and Virgin Voyages are some of the few cruise lines that don’t have a drinks package.

MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean have variable pricing. MSC Cruises’ pricing varies with the destination. Royal Caribbean’s prices vary depending on many factors, and prices also go up and down in the period between booking and sailing.

Which Cruise Line Has the Best Drink Packages?

If you like to drink alcohol on holiday, you might want to know which cruise line has the best drinks packages. Of course, that depends on your definition of ‘the best’.

The Cheapest Drinks Package

Fred. Olsen Cruise Line offers the cheapest cruise drinks package, at just £19 per person per day. That’s less than a quarter of the price of Norwegian Cruise Line’s package. So, why is it so cheap?

For one thing, they attract very different crowds. Fred. Olsen Cruise Line attracts British pensioners who tend to enjoy half a bitter or a small sherry, then head off to bed at 9pm. (Yes, these are stereotypes, but that’s often how it is!)

At the other end of the scale is Norwegian Cruise Line. This trendy line is popular with millennial cruisers, who love to drink cocktails all day and stay up late in the onboard bars and nightclubs.

As well as attracting different clientele, these cruise lines also have large differences in the prices of individual drinks. On Fred. Olsen cruise ships, drinks when bought individually are around half the price as on NCL ships. You’re looking at £4.35 for a glass of wine rather than $10.

So while some drinks packages are cheaper than others, to work out which drinks package is the best value, you have to think about how many drinks you need to ‘break even’.

The Most Inclusive Drinks Package

Most cruise beverage packages have limits, whether that’s a limited number of drinks per day or a limit on the types of drinks you can have. For example, it’s common to exclude bottles of wine and instead request that guests order wine by the glass.

The table below shows the drinks package limitations for each cruise line.

Cruise line Max. drinks per day Max. drink price Mini bar included?
Ambassador 15 n/a no
Carnival 15 $20 no
Celebrity Cruises n/a $10 or $17 no
Costa Cruises n/a €9 Only with Connoisseur
Cunard 15 n/a no
Fred. Olsen Cruise Line n/a n/a no
Holland America 15 $11 or $15 no
MSC Cruises n/a $10 or $16 no
Norwegian Cruise Line n/a $15 or unlimited no
P&O Cruises 15 n/a no
Princess Cruises 15 $15 or $20 no
Royal Caribbean n/a $12 no

What if You Order a Drink That Costs More Than The Maximum Drink Price?

In most cases, you’ll pay the extra. So if your package covers drinks up to $12, but you order a glass of champagne for $15, then you’ll pay $3.

However, in this scenario, Holland America Line and MSC Cruises would charge you for the entire drink, so you would pay $15.

When Does the 24-Hour Period Reset?

For cruise lines which have a limit on the number of drinks per day, the new day starts at 6am. Non-alcoholic beverages aren’t included in the 15-drink limit.

Although most cruise lines don’t set limits, if you’re visibly drunk, you’re unlikely to get served more alcohol.

How Much Are Drinks on Cruise Ships?

Cruise ship drinks prices vary depending on the cruise line, and sometimes depending on the ship. The most expensive drinks are on Norwegian Cruise Line, where beer or wine will cost $8 to $10. The cheapest drinks are on P&O Cruises, where beer or wine will cost around $5 (£4).

As a general rule, the drinks on British cruise ships (P&O Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Line) and European cruise ships (Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises) are cheaper than on American-owned ships.

Cruise Drinks Menus

Whenever I go on a cruise, I take photos of the bar menus. I know that people often like to look at these to see the bar prices, as well as to note which drinks are available.

So far, this blog has detailed info on bar prices for the following cruise lines.

I will add more cruise ship drinks menu photos as I take more cruises.

Should You Buy the Drinks Package?

Now, the million-dollar question…

To decide if you should buy the cruise drinks package or not, you’ll need to estimate how much you would spend on drinks if you didn’t have the package.

If you would spend more on drinks without a beverage package, then the package is worth it. However, it could be the case that you drink as much as you like and still don’t break even on the drinks package cost.

I created a handy drinks package calculator tool, to help you work out how much you would spend on drinks per day with no drinks package. You can then compare that with the cost of the all-inclusive package, to see if it’s worth it or not.

Which Cruise Lines Offer Free Drink Packages?

A cruise with a free drinks package can seem like a great deal. Always remember though, there’s truth in the old saying ‘nothing is for free in this world’.

Cruise lines and travel agents regularly have promotions offering cruises with free drinks packages. It’s quite possible to book an all-inclusive cruise with drinks included, but these drinks are by no means free.

The package price for a cruise with drinks will always be higher than if you booked just the cruise. It’s all just clever marketing.

That’s not to say that you should avoid an offer of cruises with free drinks. Far from it. It could still be a great deal, and it’s likely to be a better price than if you paid separately for the cruise and drinks package.

Cruises offering free drink packages include:

  • Azamara – always
  • Celebrity Cruises – sometimes
  • Holland America Line – sometimes
  • Marella – always
  • MSC Cruises – sometimes
  • Norwegian Cruise Line – sometimes
  • Princess Cruises- sometimes

Eligibility for Free Drinks Packages

For some of these offers, to get the free drinks you need to book an oceanview or a balcony stateroom, rather than the cheapest inside cabins. These cruises are often cold-weather cruises, where people are less bothered about having a balcony. Cruise lines use ‘free drinks with balcony cabins’ as a way to entice people to go for the cabin upgrade.

For others, you can book an upgraded ‘experience’. This gives you perks such as the best cabin locations, first choice of dining times and free room service, as well as free drinks.

Cruise promotions change all the time, sometimes as often as every few days, but certainly every couple of months. For this reason, I won’t list the exact free drinks promos that each cruise line is offering.

I will mention NCL’s Free at Sea promotion though, because it is an interesting one. And also, as I’ve highlighted, the standard drinks package with NCL is one of the most expensive options. So this is worth pointing out.

NCL typically runs the Free at Sea promotion all year round. You can get drinks included along with other benefits, such as speciality dining, shore excursion credit and free Wi-Fi.

Normally you get to choose one or two of these benefits, depending on your cruise/stateroom choice. But sometimes the promotion lets you enjoy all of them at once, if you pay a relatively low upgrade fee.

These upgrades can sometimes be as cheap as £99 per person, depending on the sailing. And that’s for the entire cruise (up to five nights – longer cruises cost more). That’s a lot less than paying over $100 per day for your drinks package!

If the offer is limited to one or two of the benefits, you can choose the free drinks but you’ll still have to pay the 20% gratuity for the package. And if you choose one of the other benefits, you’ll pay the full price for the drinks package.

Can You Bring Your Own Drinks on a Cruise?

There are many reasons you might want to bring your own drinks on a cruise ship.

The first is to save money. If you’re on a budget, you could bring your own drinks instead of getting a drinks package. We brought a litre of gin, a litre of rum and a lot of lemonade in our luggage on P&O Britannia. This saved us around £400, compared to buying these drinks at the bar.

Sadly, P&O Cruises changed their policy in May 2024 to stop guests from bringing spirits onboard, although you can still bring wine. Many other cruise lines allow you to bring bottles of wine. This varies by cruise line, so click the link below to see exactly what you’re allowed on each ship.

Read more: Can you take drinks on a cruise ship

If you have a drinks package, should you bring your own drinks too? Ordinarily, no. But perhaps you have a special bottle of champagne that you’ve been saving for your anniversary? Maybe the ship doesn’t stock your favourite tipple? You may also have dietary requirements, and are concerned about getting vegan wine or gluten-free beer on the ship.

How To Sneak Alcohol on a Cruise Ship

Many cruise lines are very generous in allowing guests to bring a certain amount of alcohol on board, but some people still want to know how to sneak booze on a cruise.

Smuggling alcohol on a cruise ship is not allowed. Cruise lines use scanners to X-ray your luggage to look for prohibited items. Cruisers have been coming up with seemingly ingenious ways to sneak alcohol onto cruise ships, but nothing is foolproof.

What will happen if you’re caught? The best-case scenario is that your alcohol is confiscated and returned to you at the end of the cruise. However, some cruise lines retain the right to refuse boarding to anyone attempting to smuggle drinks on board. Would you take the risk?

Pros and Cons of Cruise Line Drink Packages

Still unsure whether you should buy the cruise drinks package or not? Let’s weigh up the pros and cons…

Pros

No unexpected bill at the end of your cruise

With a drinks package, you pay for it before you cruise. It’s a great feeling to know that everything’s already paid for, and you’re free to enjoy yourself.

Without a drinks package, you’ll receive a bill at the end. You can check your bar tab mid-way through your cruise, either by using your stateroom TV (on most cruise lines) or by asking at guest services. It can be pretty depressing to see, so I wouldn’t recommend checking unless you have to!

If you don’t like your cocktail, you can get another

If I spent $12 on a cocktail and didn’t like it, I’d be furious with myself. So without a package, I’d probably only stick to tried and trusted drinks.

Having a beverage package gives you the freedom to try new things. If you don’t like it, you can always order something else.

It’s so convenient

When you have a drinks package, you can relax without caring about the drink prices on the menu. You don’t have to pack your own wine in your suitcase and worry about it breaking all over your clothes. In fact, all you have to worry about is your hangover!

Drinks packages work on some private islands

In most cases, drinks packages only work on the ship. However, some cruise lines own private islands in the Bahamas, and allow you to use your drinks package while on the island.

Drinks packages work on the following islands:

Drinks packages don’t work on these islands:

Cons

Some drinks are free without a package

The free drinks vary by cruise line. You can generally expect water, tea, coffee, milk and flavoured water (cordial or squash) to be on offer with no charge. Fruit juice is also available at breakfast time.

On river cruises, you may also get wine and beer included at lunch and dinner. Luxury cruise lines like Azamara also include a range of alcoholic drinks with no extra charge.

The flavoured water and lemonade available free of charge on Royal Caribbean cruises are actually really nice, and I prefer these to fizzy drinks most of the time.

As you’re leaving the ship, you’ll often see bottles of water available to take ashore with you. These can be handy to grab, if you have a package. If you don’t, then save your pennies (and the environment) by using your own refillable water bottle.

You have to get a package for everyone in your cabin

In most cases, everyone in the cabin has to have the same package. Sometimes, this can even extend to separate cabins on the same booking.

This means that if one person doesn’t drink alcohol – even if they’re pregnant, or have a medical or religious reason to avoid alcohol – they still have to get the package. It’s very rare that an alcoholic drinks package would be worth it if you don’t drink alcohol at all.

Some cruise lines also make you buy a drinks package for children as young as two or three years old, if the adults have a package. My three-year-old drinks nothing but water (his choice, not mine), so a drinks package would be completely wasted on him.

P&O Cruises give a free children’s drinks package when you book an adult drinks package. This deal can offer great value if you have older children who like to drink a lot of fizzy drinks and mocktails.

Not all drinks are included

If you’re an aficionado who will only have Hendrick’s with your tonic and wouldn’t ever consider a house wine, a package might not be for you. If you order a drink that’s not included in the package, you might have to make up the difference or even pay full price for it.

Many cruise lines do offer premium packages or wine packages, which include more than the standard package. If you’re somewhat of a connoisseur in the wine and spirits department, you may want to buy a deluxe package if one’s available.

Other drinks that are unlikely to be included in your drinks package include:

  • Drinks served in souvenir glasses
  • Wine by the bottle
  • Buckets or pitchers of beer
  • Room service drinks
  • Minibar drinks
  • Duty-free shops
  • Drinks which cost more than a certain price

You must buy the package for every day of your cruise

Some days, you’ll be off the ship from early in the morning until the evening. On those days, you might not have any drinks at all until your evening meal (as most breakfast drinks are free anyway).

It’s much easier to break even on your drinks package price on sea days than on port days. So if you plan to explore ashore most days, factor that in when making your decision.

How To Buy a Cruise Drinks Package

There are three ways to book a drinks package:

  1. Over the phone with your travel agent or direct with the cruise line
  2. Using the cruise line’s ‘cruise planner’ website or app
  3. At guest services on board the ship

Unless your cruise includes drinks when you book it, the easiest way to add on a drinks package is via the cruise planner. You should log on to your cruise planner before you cruise anyway, to add passenger details and submit preferences such as dining times or bed configuration.

When To Buy Your Drinks Package

Should you buy your drinks package when you book your cruise, before you sail or once you’re on the ship? You’ll probably see that different prices are available depending on when you purchase the package.

The best time to buy your drinks package is after you book your cruise but before you sail. Buying it on the ship is almost always more expensive.

After you book your cruise, you may receive emails with special offers on drinks packages which can include a discount of up to 30%. Cruise lines may also offer drinks package promotions to encourage you to get one, particularly at times such as Black Friday.

When you board the ship, you may see offers such as ‘buy one get one half-price’ on drinks packages. But look closely at the original price. You’ll see that it’s much higher than if you pre-book before you cruise. So even with these offers, you’ll still get a better price if you buy the package before you set sail.

Norwegian Cruise Line Cancels Anticipated 2025 Alaska-Hawaii Voyage Due to Fleet Redeployment

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced the cancellation of its unique 20-day Alaska to Hawaii cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun, originally scheduled to depart on 20th June 2025.

NCL Alaska Hawaii Cruise

This cruise, which was to travel from Vancouver, Canada, to Honolulu, Hawaii, has been cancelled due to fleet redeployment.

Guests and travel advisors were informed of the decision directly, although specific details regarding the redeployment were not provided.

The itinerary was designed to offer a distinctive travel experience, beginning in Vancouver and concluding in Honolulu. It included stops in Alaska, such as Ketchikan, Ice Strait Point, Juneau, Sitka, and Whittier, with scenic cruising at Hubbard Glacier.

The journey was to continue to the Hawaiian Islands, featuring port calls in Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, and finally Oahu.

The itinerary was eagerly anticipated as usually cruises go to either Alaska or Hawaii. For cruises to both regions, you’d typically be looking at much longer world cruise segments.

The good news is that, despite the cancellation, a similar itinerary in reverse, from Honolulu to Vancouver, remains available for booking. However, it was not flagged as an alternative option by NCL for impacted guests, so it may yet be cancelled.

Norwegian Cruise Line has a history of altering or cancelling voyages due to fleet redeployment. In recent years, the line cancelled nearly all of Norwegian Spirit’s summer 2024 Alaska cruises and several Western Caribbean voyages on Norwegian Escape in early 2025.

The cancellation has prompted varied reactions from the cruise community. Guests who were booked onto the cruise have, understandably, expressed disappointment, while travel advisors are working to accommodate changes and provide alternatives.

As a bonus for affected guests, they will all be offered a 10% discount on a future cruise booking, provided it’s taken between 11th November 2024 and 31st December 2025.

Severe Winds Cause Massive Cruise Ship To Skip Port

Utopia of the Seas, a flagship of Royal Caribbean and the world’s second-largest cruise ship, was unable to dock at Nassau, Bahamas, on 5th November 2024, due to severe weather conditions.

Utopia of the Seas

Winds reaching up to 50 knots forced the vessel to alter its planned itinerary, highlighting the challenges of maritime travel in adverse weather.

Passengers aboard the Utopia of the Seas shared their experiences on social media, providing real-time updates on the situation and how the high-speed winds were causing the sudden itinerary change.

The ship was originally on a 4-night itinerary with Nassau as a key stop. However, the inclement weather necessitated a change in plans, leading to speculation among passengers about a possible rescheduled visit.

The decision to skip Nassau was influenced by the challenges associated with docking a vessel of Utopia’s magnitude in adverse weather. It shows that even the biggest ships in the world can be impacted by winds!

The ship is expected to remain near Nassau before proceeding to its next scheduled stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Bahamas. The cruise is set to conclude at Port Canaveral, Florida, on 8th November.

While the itinerary change may have been disappointing for some passengers, it reflects the cruise line’s prioritisation of safety over adherence to schedule.

Tropical storms have hit the headlines in the past couple of months around the Caribbean, due to the damage they’ve caused across the region and into mainland USA.

Utopia of the Seas has been impacted in recent days too, with the prior cruise forced to cancel a trip to Perfect Day at CocoCay, instead sailing to Labadee.

They’ve also wreaked havoc on cruise itineraries, with a couple of key lessons for anyone planning a Caribbean cruise. If you’re going to sail during hurricane season, anticipate last-minute changes, and make sure you have appropriate travel insurance with cruise cover!

Fred. Olsen Launches Freedom Fare Price Promise Alongside Summer 2026 Season

Popular British cruise line Fred. Olsen has announced its Summer 2026 collection is now on sale, with a new Freedom Fare Price Promise to tempt guests to book early.

Cruise mummy with Fred. Olsen Borealis Cruise

The new price promise applies to anyone who makes a booking for summer 2026 within the first four weeks of a cruise going on sale.

Any guests who book a cruise during that period, who then find that their cruise drops in price before the sail date, will either be given a cabin upgrade or onboard credit to match the value of the price drop.

“Our Freedom Fare Price Promise has been created with our guests in mind, following feedback that they weren’t sure when the best time to book was to get the best value for their cruise.

“Our new Price Promise means that if guests book a Freedom Fare within the first four weeks of a cruise going on sale, they will not get better value for money.”

Doug Glenwright, Guest Experience Director at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

The Freedom Fare allows guests to select their cabin grade and number, as well as choose their table size and dining time, so it’s not a restrictive fare – meaning guests can book now and know that they’ll get excellent value even if the price were to drop.

The Freedom Fare is even being extended across solo passenger fares, with a guarantee that single cabin prices will match the equivalent per-person twin fares with no single supplement, provided they’re booked in that initial four-week period.

And those single cabins are still given the same price promise benefits as guests in a twin cabin.

Two more big announcements came as part of the summer 2026 launch, with the first that from that season onwards, tips will now always be included in the fare that guests pay.

The other change is that Borealis will become a purely adults-only ship, perfect for guests who want to enjoy a cruise knowing that there won’t be children onboard.

While Fred. Olsen doesn’t tend to attract many young families, multi-generational cruises are still popular – so for guests who wish to avoid those, Borealis will be the ideal option from summer 2026.

The season is on sale now, so guests can book immediately if they wish to take advantage of this new promotion.
