32 Cruise Industry Statistics and Facts (2024)

As we know, the cruise industry took a bit of a hit from 2020 until 2021, but the recovery has been pretty remarkable. 2022 and 2023 saw the cruise market boom once again, helped by a number of new ship launches

In this updated guide, I’ve got some key cruise stats that help show you the state of the current cruise industry, including key info from the last couple of years and a preview of what’s to come in 2024.

2024 Cruise Industry Statistics

1. In 2023, the Cruise Market Recovered to Record Levels

31.7 million people enjoyed a cruise in 2023 – record levels that surpass even the numbers before the global shutdown.

According to the latest state of cruising report by the Cruise Line International Association, around 35 million passengers are expected to embark on a cruise in 2024.

2023 was the first year expected to be above 2019 passenger levels, with the industry recovering slowly from the global shutdown of 2020 – though not slow compared to some other travel industries.

2. Royal Caribbean Carried the Most Passengers of All Cruise Lines in 2023

(Individual cruise line reports)

Royal Caribbean carried more passengers than any other cruise line in 2023, with over 6 million passengers. However, the Carnival Corporation (including Carnival, Costa Cruises, Princess Cruises, AIDA, Holland America, and P&O) hasn’t yet announced its full statistics and it’s likely that the Group will have more passengers combined – it was 7.7 million in 2022.

5. More Than 50% Of All New Cruise Ships That Launched in 2022 or 2023 Are Powered by LNG Rather Than Diesel

(CLIA)

Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is the cleanest fossil fuel and it represents an excellent alternative to diesel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and compact climate change. LNG also has virtually zero sulphur emissions.

69% of diesel-powered ships have been fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) which remove 98% of sulphur content from exhaust emissions. 96% of non-LNG new ships will have EGCS installed.

Cruise Ship Statistics

6. In 2023 There Were Over 300 Cruise Ships in the World

It’s not clear how many cruise ships are operating right now, because some of the smaller ships don’t always operate. There were believed to be 323 cruise ships by the end of 2022 and another 15 were added in 2023, but it’s not clear how many were sold or scrapped. It’s likely to be around 320 ships sailing right now.

According to CLIA this is still under 1% of the world’s commercial fleet of ships. 25% of ships are general cargo ships.

7. There Are More Than 50 Cruise Lines in the World

(CLIA, Maritime Executive)

There were more than 50 cruise lines operating in 2024, as recognised by the Cruise Lines International Association as well as some smaller brands.

The biggest additions to the cruise line world last year were Explora Journeys – a new luxury brand operated by MSC – and Crystal Cruises, which made its return after folding in 2022.

8. An Exact Replica of the Titanic, Called Titanic II, Was Announced (Again) in 2024.

(Business Insider)

An Australian businessman has undertaken a $500 million project to build an exact replica of the Titanic cruise ship which sank in 1912.

The ship will feature modern-day navigation technology and safety systems and, unlike the original, it will have enough lifeboats and life jackets for all of the passengers.

You can learn more about Titanic II in this video…

The project was announced a long time ago, but only in early 2024 was an update given and it is still happening, though there is no timescale.

9. The First Cruise Ships Had Cows on Board To Provide Fresh Milk

(Associated Press, Cunard)

Cunard is one of the oldest cruise lines with a history dating back to 1840. On the earliest cruises, cows were kept on board to supply fresh milk before being slaughtered and eaten on the final day of the voyage.

These days, over 40,000 pints of milk are brought on to a cruise ship for a two-week cruise. To produce that amount of milk in two weeks would require 25 dairy cows.

10. 2024 Saw The New ‘Biggest Cruise Ship in the World’

In early 2024, Royal Caribbean’s ship Icon of the Seas launched as the biggest cruise ship in the world.

Unlike previous new ‘biggest ship’ launches such as Wonder of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, this is not a minor increase within the same class. This is a brand new Icon Class, which is significantly larger.

The previous biggest ship launched in 2022, and that was Wonder of the Seas. She had an internal volume of 236,857 gross tons and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,988.

Icon of the Seas exceeds those stats by some way, with a volume of 250,800 gross tons and a maximum passenger capacity of 7,600.

She really is iconic.

11. The Most Expensive Cruise Ships Are Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas… For Now

(Statista)

The most expensive cruise ships ever built are Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. These virtually-identical ships each cost around $1.4 billion when they were built in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Royal Caribbean’s newest Oasis-class ship, Wonder of the Seas, was slightly less expensive to build, with a cost of $1.3 billion.

But Icon of the Seas, that launched earlier in 2024, is estimated to have cost $2 billion. So the title may change hands very soon, once that figure is confirmed…

12. The Average Cruise Duration Is Seven Days

(CLIA)

The average cruise duration is seven days. However, seven-day cruises account for only 40% of all cruises. 27% of cruises are 4-6 days in length, 15% are 8-13 days, 11% are up to 3 days and 4% are 14 days.

Cruise Port and Destination Statistics

13. There Are More Than 2,000 Cruise Ports To Explore

(CruiseMapper)

CruiseMapper has a database of 2,219 cruise ports. 587 of these are river ports and 1,632 are ocean ports.

Most cruise ports can only accommodate ships of a certain size – the smaller ones are only accessible by smaller cruise ships.

14. The World’s Busiest Cruise Port Is Port Canaveral

(Florida Ports Council)

The world’s busiest cruise port is Port Canaveral, which welcomed 6.8 million passengers in 2023 – a massive increase of over 2 million guests compared to 2022 (source).

15. The Average Cruise Passenger Spends $385 in Port Before Boarding a Cruise

(CLIA)

Most passengers will arrive in a port city at least one day before they embark on a cruise. During this time, they spend an average of $385 per person on things like accommodation, food and transport.

Passengers go on to spend an average of $100 in each port that they visit during the cruise.

16. The Preferred Destination of British and Irish Passengers Is the Mediterranean

(CLIA)

38.4% of cruises taken by British and Irish passengers were to the Mediterranean, significantly more than any other region. The second most popular destination was Northern Europe, with 29%, while 10.6% of passengers went to the Caribbean.

Of all passengers cruising anywhere in Europe in 2024, 29% came from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Cruise Passenger Statistics

17. The Average Cruise Passenger Is 47 Years Old

(CLIA)

The average age of a cruise passenger is 46 years old. However, people in their forties make up only 15% of cruise passengers. Most cruises have a mix of all ages, from children to pensioners.

Here is the breakdown of cruisers by age:

  • 12 and under – 9%
  • 13 to 19 – 6%
  • 20 to 29 – 9%
  • 30 to 39 – 11%
  • 40 to 49 – 15%
  • 50 to 59 – 18%
  • 60 to 69 – 19%
  • 70 and over – 14%

World cruises have the oldest passengers, with an average age of 62. This is because there are few, if any, children on board and because it’s mostly retired people who can go away for 3 months at a time.

Caribbean cruises have the youngest passengers, with an average age of 43. This is because they are popular with families as well as those under 30 who like to take short party cruises from the US.

British passengers have an older average age than the global figures – it stands at 55.8 years.

We also know from the latest CLIA stats that more than a quarter of cruises taken by British and Irish guests in 2024 involved a travelling party of three or more generations. That’s a lot of people travelling with children, parents and/or grandparents (or even great-grandparents).

18. Half of All Cruise Passengers Reside in North America

(CLIA)

Around 50% of cruise passengers come from North America. 24% come from Western Europe, 15% from Asia and 11% from elsewhere.

The following table shows the number of cruise passengers in 2018 based on where they live:

Region of residence Number of Passengers % of all
North America 14,240,000 50%

20. Three-Quarters of People Use a Travel Agent When Booking a Cruise

(CLIA)

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) recognises 13,000 travel agencies and 50,000 individual travel agents worldwide. Together, these book 75% of cruise vacations around the world.

21. More People Are Aware of the Environmental Impact of Cruising – And the Efforts To Improve Things

(CLIA)

CLIA’s latest information for British and Irish cruise passengers shows that 76% of passengers were either “more aware” or “much more aware” of environmental and sustainable tourism, while the cruise industry moves towards a target of net zero carbon cruising by 2050.

This shows a significant increase in passengers being aware of cruising’s environmental impact – a good thing that more ships are being built to use more eco-friendly fuel then.

Cruise Safety Statistics

22. The Biggest Threat to Cruise Ship Safety Is Fire

(Tyco)

To ensure that any fires that occur on cruise ships can be quickly contained, the average 2,700-passenger cruise ship has 4,000 smoke detectors, 500 fire extinguishers, 5,000 sprinklers, six miles of fire hose and five specially-trained firefighting teams.

23. The Risk of Violent Crime on a Cruise Ship Is 95% Lower Than on Land

(CLIA)

A study of four years of violent crime data by renowned criminologist Dr James Alan Fox showed that the rate of violent crime on a cruise ship is 23.8 per 100,000 people, compared to 508 per 100,000 people in a typical city in the United States.

24. Most Cruise Ships Have Jails, Hospitals and Morgues on Board

Cruise ships need to be prepared for every eventuality. Cruise ship jails, hospitals and morgues will be found in the lower decks, away from the majority of passengers. Depending on the size of the cruise ship, the morgue usually holds thre to six bodies.

25. Many Cruise Ships Have Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Meetings on Board

As cruise ships have an abundance of alcohol on board, people suffering from addictions sometimes worry about being able to practice abstinence on board.

For this reason, many cruise ships have Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings on a daily basis. You’ll see these on the cruise daily schedule as ‘Friends of Bill W’ or ‘FOB’.

Bill Wilson is the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Friends of Bill meetings on cruise ships may also be attended by members of similar support groups such as Overeaters Anonymous (OA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

27. Not All Cruise Ship Weddings Are Legally Recognised

(World of Cruising)

Cruise ship weddings may be legally-binding or just symbolic. If you want your cruise ship wedding to count as a legal marriage, you’ll need to choose a cruise ship that was registered in a country where the law allows marriages onboard a cruise ship.

Options for legally-binding cruise ship weddings include P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess Cruises (which have ships registered in Bermuda), Celebrity Cruises (on ships registered in Malta) and Royal Caribbean (on ships registered in the Bahamas).

28. The Big X on Celebrity Cruises’ Ship Funnels Isn’t the Letter X

Each Celebrity Cruises ship has a big letter X on the funnel. While you may think that this is the letter X, it’s actually the Greek letter Chi and it stands for Chandris which is the group that founded Celebrity Cruises in 1988.

29. You Can Bring Your Dog or Cat on a Cruise

(Cunard)

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is the only cruise ship that allows passengers to bring their pet dogs and cats on board. This ship has 24 kennels, space to play and it even has lampposts and fire hydrants for dogs to relieve themselves.

Service dogs such as guide dogs for visually impaired people and hearing dogs for the deaf are welcome on most cruise ships.

However, certain types of working dogs such as emotional support dogs are not recognised as official service dogs and are not allowed on board. The rules have become stricter since people began to bring untrained pet dogs on board under the guise of being assistance dogs.

Cat lovers may also be interested in the Meow Meow Cruise, a cat-themed cruise. Unfortunately, no cats are permitted onboard.

30. You Can See an Abandoned Cruise Ship Wreck on Google Maps

The MS World Discoverer is a cruise ship that struck a rock in the ocean off the Solomon Islands in April 2000. All passengers were transported to safety, but the ship remains there to this day, lying tipped to one side.

You can view the World Discoverer cruise ship on Google Maps here.

31. Most Cruise Ships Don’t Have a Deck 13

And yes, it’s for exactly the reason you think it is – superstition means that many cruise ships go straight from Deck 12 to Deck 14.

MSC Cruises is a little different – the number 17 is considered unlucky in Italian culture, and so instead MSC ships often skip from Deck 16 to Deck 18.

32. You Can Part-Own the Biggest Cruise Lines

Many of the biggest cruise lines in the world are public – meaning you can buy shares in them.

Not only that, but there are often rewards to owning a minimum number of shares, with perks given to you every time you cruise with that cruise line!

The Bottom Line

The cruise industry is a huge contributor to the global economy. Following a year like no other, the cruise industry has been quick to engage experts and government authorities to strengthen its already robust public health measures.

Cruising resumed gradually from summer 2020 and the return has continued into 2021 and 2022. 2023 was then one of the strongest years in a long time.

With the pent-up demand for travel, I’m sure that the cruise industry will reach new heights in the years to come.

Versatile Swimwear Styles for your Cruise – CruiseMiss.com

Discovery Princess to Call Sydney Home for the 2025/26 Australian Summer Season

From Poolside to Beach Party: Versatile Swimwear Styles for your Cruise

Summer spent on a cruise is a season of sun, sand, and endless fun by the water. Whether you’re lounging by the pool on deck or heading off on an excursion that takes you to the beach, the right swimwear can make or break your experience. Today’s swimwear designs go beyond the typical one-piece or simple bikini, offering styles that are versatile enough to transition smoothly from poolside relaxation to evenings spent indulging at the cruise spa. Below, we break down some of the most versatile swimwear styles that will have you looking fabulous in any setting.

The Classic Bikini

The classic bikini remains a staple in every woman’s swimwear collection. With the perfect blend of comfort and style, it’s no wonder bikinis have stood the test of time. A well-chosen womens bikini set can be easily dressed up or down, making it ideal for both lounging by the pool and heading to a more social, lively beach party on your shore excursions. You can play around with different colours, patterns, and fabrics to create a look that’s all your own. Opt for neutral tones for a sophisticated appearance or bold prints to make a splash.

The Versatile One-Piece

Don’t underestimate the power of a good one-piece swimsuit. While one-piece swimwear used to be seen as more conservative, modern designs have completely redefined this category. From plunging necklines and cut-outs to high-leg styles, the one-piece now comes in a variety of sexy and fashionable options. Pair it with a sarong or high-waisted shorts, and you’ve got a beach party-ready ensemble that exudes elegance and sophistication.

Tankinis and Alternatives

For those who want a bit more coverage but still crave versatility, tankinis are a fantastic option. Tankinis consist of a tank-style top and a bikini bottom, allowing for various customization options and a flattering fit for different body types. You can mix and match tops and bottoms to create a balanced look that suits your style and comfort needs. Additionally, high-neck bikinis and swim skirts also offer that extra coverage without compromising on style, making them perfect for daytime lounging or a night out on the town.

The Cover-Up Game Changer

An often overlooked aspect of swimwear versatility lies in the cover-up. A well-chosen cover-up can transform your swimwear into an outfit that’s ready for any social setting. Whether it’s a sheer maxi dress, a chic kimono, or a romper, a stylish cover-up adds an extra layer of sophistication and convenience. You can slip the cover-up on over your swimwear when you need to grab a bite to eat at the pool side bar or if the evening breeze gets a bit too chilly onboard. It also provides the modesty you might crave when moving from beach to bar.

Stylish Accessories

Accessories can make a world of difference when transitioning from a poolside setting to a lively beach party. Wide-brimmed hats, oversized sunglasses, and beaded jewellery can elevate your swimwear look and make it party-ready. Flip-flops might be perfect for the pool, but a pair of stylish espadrilles or wedges can change your whole outfit when attending an evening beach event. A trendy beach bag not only adds to your look but also allows you to carry essentials like sunscreen, a change of clothes, and a good book.

The Multifunctional Sarong

The sarong is perhaps the unsung hero of versatile swimwear. This large, lightweight piece of fabric can be manipulated into a skirt, dress, or even a wrap top. Easily packed and incredibly stylish, a sarong can turn a simple bikini into a chic outfit in a matter of seconds. This makes it perfect for anyone transitioning from a relaxed day in the sun to an occasion that calls for a bit more fashion finesse.

Mix and Match

One of the easiest ways to achieve versatility in your swimwear collection is by mixing and matching different pieces. An investment in a variety of tops and bottoms can provide multiple looks without the need for multiple swimsuits. By mixing patterns, colours, and styles, you can create an endless array of combinations that keep your swimwear fresh and exciting.

Best Swimsuit Styles for a Cruise

Going on a cruise calls for swimwear that is not only stylish but also practical and comfortable. Here are some of the best swimsuit styles for a cruise:

One-Piece Swimsuits

One-piece swimsuits are perfect for cruises as they offer great coverage and comfort. Look for designs with cut-outs or interesting patterns to keep your style chic and modern. One-piece swimsuits are also versatile enough to double as a top when paired with skirts or shorts for excursions onshore.

High-Waisted Bikinis

High-waisted bikinis are both trendy and flattering, providing extra support and coverage. They are perfect for lounging by the pool or engaging in cruise activities. Pair them with a matching or contrasting top to create a stylish look that stands out.

Rash Guards and Swim Shirts

If you plan to participate in water sports or need extra sun protection, rash guards and swim shirts are ideal. These pieces offer full coverage and are made from quick-drying, UV-protective fabrics. They can be worn over your swimsuit for added protection without compromising on style.

How to Style Swimsuits for a Cruise

Styling swimsuits for a cruise involves considering both functionality and fashion. Here are some tips to ensure you look your best while staying comfortable:

Layer with Light Fabrics

Layer your swimsuits with light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. A light tunic or kaftan can easily be thrown over your swimsuit for a casual yet elegant look that is perfect for dining or exploring the ship.

Use Statement Accessories

Accessories such as wide-brimmed hats, oversized sunglasses, and chunky jewellery can elevate your swimwear look. Choose pieces that are easy to pack and can be mixed and matched with different swimsuits.

Pack Versatile Footwear

Footwear is key when transitioning from poolside to other activities. Pack a pair of comfortable sandals for walking around the ship and a pair of dressier sandals or espadrilles for evening events. This ensures that you are always appropriately dressed for any occasion.

Showcasing Swimwear on Cruises

Cruises provide the perfect backdrop to showcase the latest swimwear trends while ensuring comfort and style throughout your journey. Here are additional opportunities to flaunt your swimwear on a cruise:

Poolside Glamour

Embrace poolside glamour by opting for swimwear that combines luxury with comfort. Designer one-pieces with embellishments or metallic finishes can make you stand out while you relax on deck chairs and enjoy the ocean view. Coordinating your swimwear with a glamorous robe or a sheer caftan can elevate your style quotient, making you the centre of attention at any poolside gathering.

Exciting Excursions

When the ship docks, be ready for adventure or relaxation with swimwear that suits the occasion. For water sports or snorkelling excursions, wear a durable, high-performance swimsuit like a rash guard or a sporty bikini that withstands the elements. For more laid-back activities, like a leisurely beach visit, a stylish bikini or a comfortable one-piece allows you to soak up the sun in style.

Evening Entertainment

Many cruises offer evening pool parties and other entertainment options where you can showcase your swimwear. Opt for swimwear with interesting details such as lace, ruffles, or unique back designs to catch the eye under the starry sky. Accessorizing with elegant jewellery and a sophisticated cover-up can transition your look seamlessly from day to night.

Conclusion

Finding the right swimwear is key to feeling confident and comfortable wherever your summer takes you. From the classic simplicity of a bikini to the sophistication of a one-piece and the multitude of options in between, versatile swimwear ensures you are ready for anything. With the right choices in swimwear and accessories, you can seamlessly transition from poolside relaxation to an unforgettable beach party, all while looking fabulous as you set sail to your next destination.

Three-Year Cruise CEO Releases Video Statement After Yet More Delays To Departure

Villa Vie Residences’ CEO and Founder Mikael Petterson has released a video statement, after the company’s three-year cruise suffered yet more delays.

Villa Vie Odyssey

Villa Vie Odyssey was originally scheduled to depart on her incredible itinerary on 15th May 2024, but then suffered a series of delays, being ultimately rescheduled to 15th June 2024.

However, more delays meant that the ship was pushed back even further, and now Petterson has been forced to issue a statement to reassure guests and to set a new departure date of 20th July 2024.

In the update, Petterson explains that the problems are due to the rudder stocks on the ship. Everything internal is ready to go, but problems with the rudder stocks meant that they needed to be replaced.

Petterson admits that, when the company took ownership of the ship (the former Braemar for Fred. Olsen), they had no idea what condition it was in and that all maintenance records had been deleted.

He claimed that the wear and tear on the rudder stocks show that they’ve been deficient for at least 15 years, while sailing for Fred. Olsen, but now that Villa Vie Residences owns the ship, they’ve had to carry out the repairs.

It’s expected that the work will be completed and the ship floated out between 10th and 12th July, with additional time factored in in case of further delays.

“Things haven’t exactly gone perfectly, and this is still an older vessel”

Villa Vie Residences’ CEO and Founder Mikael Petterson

Several guests had already arrived in Belfast in May for the ship’s departure – it’s believed that the company has been paying for their accommodation in the meantime.

Here’s hoping the ship can finally embark on her epic journey and guests can enjoy three years of sailing around the world in luxurious comfort.

Carnival Corp. continues to update and modernize their fleet of more than 90 cruise ships. You can see the complete dry dock schedule for their flagship cruise line (Carnival Cruise Line) here.

This latest update is for their AIDA Cruises brand, a cruise line with 11 ships in service.

Two of AIDA’s Sphinx class ships will go into dry dock in 2025 and 2025.

AIDAluna will be the first to go into dry dock at the Chantier Naval shipyard in Marseille, France, from October 22 to December 10, 2025.

The second will be AIDAbella from January 21 to March 11, 2026.

Each ship will be in dry dock for seven weeks. During that time, the ship’s technology will be upgraded and new concepts will be brought on board.

All cabins will be refreshed and get a new look as well as new suites added to each ship.

New restaurants will be added to go along with popular signature bars.

The Theatrium will be redesigned with new seating and there will be new activity areas specifically for families and children.

The cruise line’s first Sphinx class ship to get remodeled will be AIDAdiva in early 2025. This date was previously announced by the cruise line.

Icon Class Vs Oasis Class

For years, the Oasis Class for Royal Caribbean has been the biggest class of ship in the world, featuring some of the most feature-packed and impressive cruise ships ever built.

But, every record has to be usurped at some time, and Royal Caribbean has maintained its position as the owner of the biggest ships in the world with its newest class, the Icon Class.

In this guide, I’ll explain everything you need to know about the Icon Class compared to the Oasis Class, so you can fully understand just how special these new ships are.

Icon Class Vs Oasis Class

Icon Class explained

The Icon Class for Royal Caribbean is the newest class of ship in the fleet. These ships are the biggest in the world, and also Royal Caribbean’s first ships to be powered by the more environmentally-friendly LNG fuel. There are four Icon-class ships currently planned.

The first Icon-class ship is Icon of the Seas which launched in January 2024.

The Icon Class was first announced in 2016, seven years after the launch of the first Oasis-class ship and six years before the final one to be built.

Icon of the Seas

Oasis Class explained

The Oasis-class ships for Royal Caribbean were the biggest cruise ships in the world ever since the debut of Oasis of the Seas in 2009, until Icon Class took over. These mighty mega-ships have maximum capacities of between 6,680 and 6,988 guests.

There will be at least seven Oasis-class ships in the fleet – the newest being Utopia of the Seas which launched in July 2024.

Wonder of the Seas
Wonder of the Seas

For a long time, the Oasis Class has been seen as the pinnacle of cruise ship design. There are very few cruise ships sailing for other lines that even come close to the size of these amazing ships, and any that do have been built very recently.

When Oasis of the Seas first launched in 2009 she was even more incredible when compared to the biggest ships for other fleets.

The Oasis Class may have lost its status as the flagship class for the Royal Caribbean fleet, but these ships are sure to remain some of the most popular in the world for years to come.

So, Icon’s bigger than Oasis

The Icon-class ships for Royal Caribbean are bigger than the Oasis-class ships, both in terms of volume (gross tonnage) and passenger capacity. The Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world, although she may be surpassed when future Icon-class ships launch.

Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison of Icon of the Seas and one of the most popular Oasis-class ships, Wonder of the Seas:

Measurement Icon of the Seas Wonder of the Seas Difference
Volume (Gross Tonnage) 250,800 236,857 +5%
Passenger Capacity 7,600 6,988 +8%
Crew Capacity 2,350 2,300 +2%
Length 1,198 feet 1,187 feet .92%
Width (beam) 213 feet 210 feet +1%
Total Decks 20 18 10%
Passenger Decks 18 16 +11%

This means that Icon of the Seas is around 5% bigger than the biggest Oasis-class ship in terms of overall volume, and around 7% larger in terms of total capacity (passengers and crew).

Icon vs Oasis – neighborhoods

With the Oasis Class, Royal Caribbean introduced a new concept to its ships – neighborhoods. Each public area of the ship is part of a themed area, bringing together exciting features and entertainment.

Central Park

Central Park

A real, living park in the middle of the ship with thousands of trees, shrubs and vines. This is a popular neighborhood where you’ll find speciality dining restaurants along with some more casual eating and drinking spots.

All Oasis-class and Icon-class ships have Central Park:

Royal Promenade

Royal Promenade on Icon of the Seas

One of the main hubs of any Royal ship, the Royal Promenade is another spot that plays host to restaurants and bars, along with shops.

Onboard Icon of the Seas, the Royal Promenade is different from on the Oasis-class ships in that it features a huge circular ice arena.

Suite Neighborhood

Wonder of the Seas Suite Neighborhood

Added to later Oasis-class ships, the Suite Neighborhood is a quiet area of the ship for suite guests only. It has its own pool, restaurant and sun terrace.

Boardwalk

Wonder of the Seas Boardwalk

The Boardwalk is a neighborhood themed after classic boardwalks/piers, and it is where you’ll find casual dining venues, bars and the candy store on the ship.

Pool and Sports Zone

Oasis of the Seas Pool and Sports Zone

You won’t be shocked when I tell you that the Pool and Sports Zone is where you’ll find the swimming pools and the sports court.

Entertainment Place

Entertainment Place

The Entertainment Place neighborhood is the home of the casino, the theatre, the ice skating rink and the comedy club on the ship.

Youth Zone

Wonder of the Seas Youth Zone

Another self-explanatory neighborhood, this is the location of the Adventure Ocean kids clubs as well as the arcade.

Vitality Spa and Fitness

Oasis of the Seas Vitality Spa and Fitness

This neighborhood is where you’ll find the spa, the beauty salon and the gym on the ship.

AquaDome

Icon of the Seas AquaDome

The AquaDome is a relaxing spot to unwind during the day, with bars and amazing views. At night, the enhanced AquaTheater brings incredible shows to life while guests can dine and drink surrounded by thrills.

Chill Island

Chill Island is the main pool area on Icon-class ships. As well as the main Royal Bay Pool, it has a Swim & Tonic pool with a swim-up bar, an adults-only pool, and four Lime & Coconut bars for those cocktails.

Surfside

Surfside on Icon of the Seas

Surfside is the first neighborhood on a Royal Caribbean ship specifically targeted at young families, although all guests are welcome. It’s here where you’ll find Adventure Ocean, the arcade, the carousel and some new dining venues too.

The Hideaway

Icon of the Seas The Hideaway

The Hideaway is a more chilled area, aimed at adults. It has its own infinity pool, hot tubs and a sun terrace.

Thrill Island

Icon of the Seas Thrill Island

Thrill Island is where you’ll be able to enjoy the most thrilling activities on the ship, including six waterslides and the Crown’s Edge skywalk/ropes course.

Icon vs Oasis – accommodation

It’s impossible to directly compare the accommodation between the Icon Class and the Oasis Class, because the ships within the classes are not identical. But there are some stateroom types that are shared, and others that are exclusive to the classes.

Here’s a rundown of the different accommodation options across both classes:

When it comes to accommodations, both Icon Class and Oasis Class ships have a range of stateroom options to choose from. These include standard Interior, Ocean View, and Balcony Staterooms, as well as Suites, providing guests with a range of options to fit their preferences and budget.

Infinite Balconies

However, there are some types that are unique to each ship and one of the most exciting new rooms on the Icon-class ships is the Infinity Balcony.

Icon of the Seas Infinite Balcony

This innovative feature provides guests with an unprecedented level of immersion in the ocean and a truly unforgettable experience.

Virtual Balconies

Virtual Balcony

For those who prefer an Interior Stateroom, the Oasis-class ships offer a virtual balcony feature, which provides a window-like view of the ocean through high-definition screens. This innovative feature is not available on the Icon-class ships, you’ll only find it on the  Oasis-class and the Quantum-class ships.

Family Suites

Icon of the Seas Ultimate Family Townhouse

When it comes to families traveling together, both the Icon-class and Oasis-class ships offer spacious family suites. The Ultimate Family Suite and the Ultimate Family Townhouse are similar in many ways, offering ample space and a range of features designed to make family travel as enjoyable as possible.

However, there is one key difference between the two: the Icon Class’s Ultimate Family Townhouse features a third storey, while the Ultimate Family Suite on the Oasis Class ships has only two. This added level provides even more space and amenities for families travelling together.

Icon vs Oasis – activities

The Oasis-class ships are not identical but they do mostly share similar activities.

There are some venues unique to select ships, but broadly you can look forward to the following activities on both the Oasis-class and Icon-class ships:

  • Waterslides
  • Live shows at the AquaTheater
  • Ice skating shows and ice skating activities
  • FlowRider – the surf simulator
  • Rock climbing walls
  • Laser Tag
  • Escape rooms
  • Arcades for the kids (and big kids)
  • Mini golf

And much more as well! That list only scratches the surface of what is available.

The Icon Class cruise ships are set to offer an even more exciting and memorable experience for guests. With a range of new and improved features, these ships are poised to take the cruise industry to new heights.

Waterslides

Waterslides on Icon of the Seas

One of the most highly anticipated upgrades is the addition of new and improved waterslides. With even more slides to choose from, guests will have even more opportunities to make a splash and enjoy the thrill of slipping and sliding at sea.

And, for the first time ever, there will be the first open free-fall slide at sea and the first family raft rides at sea too!

AquaTheater

AquaTheater

Another exciting improvement for the Icon Class is the relocation and upgrade of the AquaTheater. This has been relocated from the back to the front of the ships to offer stunning views and an even more immersive experience.

In addition, the latest projection technology will be used to create an even more captivating performance for guests to enjoy.

Family Activities

Icon of the Seas mini golf

For those who enjoy ice skating, the Icon Class ships will also feature a larger ice rink, allowing for even more guests to take to the ice and show off their moves.

And for those who enjoy a good round of mini golf, the mini golf courses on the Icon-class are expected to be better – providing a fun and challenging activity for guests of all ages.

Also debuting with the Icon Class is the Crown’s Edge – a sort of combination between a skywalk and a ropes course, which sees guests step out over the edge of the ship on a truly thrilling activity.

Icon vs Oasis – restaurants

The Oasis Class of ships has one of the widest selections of dining venues of any ship at sea. Again, each Oasis-class ship is different, so they don’t offer the same venues.

Some restaurants are consistently available, and these will be included on Icon-class ships too. They are:

  • Main Dining Room
  • Windjammer Cafe (buffet restaurant)
  • Coastal Kitchen (for Suite guests only)
  • Park Cafe
  • Sorrento’s Pizzeria
  • Chops Grille (speciality restaurant)
  • Izumi (speciality restaurant)
  • Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade (speciality restaurant)
  • Johnny Rockets burger bar (speciality restaurant)

These venues are available across all of the Oasis Class and will be kept for the Icon Class too.

Allure of the Seas Main Dining Room

However, there are also some venues that are new for the Icon Class.

New eateries include:

  • Pearl Cafe
  • Surfside Eatery – a new buffet restaurant
  • Surfside Bites – a grab-and-go venue
  • The Grove – a second Suite-guest-only restaurant
  • Basecamp – a venue close to the outdoor activities of the ship
  • Desserted Milkshake Bar – serving loaded milkshakes (including spiked options for adults)
  • Pier 7, a speciality restaurant serving “beachside favourites”
  • Empire Supper Club – a premium speciality restaurant offering eight-course dinners in a 1920s New York setting
  • Celebration Table – private table for 12 in the AquaDome for special events

You can read more about these in my full Icon of the Seas Restaurants Guide.

Icon of the Seas Surfside Eatery

Icon vs Oasis – destinations

With five Oasis-class ships currently sailing for Royal Caribbean, you would perhaps think that they cover most of the popular destinations in the world.

In reality, the ships tend to stick to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean only, and even then only a couple of ships make it to Europe.

The Caribbean is where Royal Caribbean makes its money from these mega-ships, especially with the cruise line’s private island destinations to take advantage of.

Perfect Day at CocoCay

The six Oasis-class ships are currently scheduled for the following:

  • Oasis of the Seas – Mediterranean cruises in summer from Rome, Caribbean cruises in winter from Miami (Florida)
  • Allure of the Seas – Caribbean sailings year-round from Orlando (Florida) and Galveston (Texas)
  • Harmony of the Seas – Caribbean sailings year-round from Fort Lauderdale and Miami (Florida) and Galveston (Texas)
  • Symphony of the Seas – Mediterranean cruises in summer from Barcelona, Caribbean cruises in winter from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and Miami (Florida)
  • Wonder of the Seas – Caribbean sailings year-round from Port Canaveral (Florida)
  • Utopia of the Seas – Utopia sails short breaks to the Caribbean year-round from Port Canaveral.

We don’t yet know where the seventh unnamed ship will be based.

Oasis-class ships schedule

The early signs are that the Icon Class will be similar. Icon of the Seas, the only ship currently on sale from the class, is set to cruise the Caribbean in her first winter season, sailing from Miami.

You can read more about where Icon of the seas will cruise from and to in my Guide to Icon of the Seas Itineraries.

Icon vs Oasis – which is best?

Comparing the Icon Class and the Oasis Class isn’t straightforward. For a start, there’s a 12-year difference between the launch of the first Oasis-class ship (Oasis of the Seas) and the latest, Wonder of the Seas. They are not the same ship by any means, despite being a similar size.

If you believe that bigger is better, then Icon-class ships will win. If you believe newer is better, then Icon will likely win again – there is one more Oasis-class ship to debut, but then it’s Icon-class ships for the foreseeable after that.

The Icon Class probably is marginally better but it takes nothing away from how good the Oasis Class is, and on both you will be absolutely wowed by the sheer variety of things to do and places to eat during your cruise.

Cozumel Reopening to Cruise Ships Today

Cozumel, Mexico, one of the most popular cruise ports in the Western Caribbean, will reopen to cruise ships today following the passing of Hurricane Beryl.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald posted a message his Facebook page today giving an update on Cozumel.

He said that Carnival Cruise Line’s partners on the island have done a post-storm assessment and Carnival ships are cleared to visit Cozumel starting this morning.

He went on to say that while Hurricane Beryl had minimal impact on the area, there may be some debris as they clean up from the storm.

Heald’s complete message about Cozumel that came from a captain on Carnival Valor can be read below:

“Good evening, Carnival Valor family. This is Captain Castrogiovanni with some good news!”

“Our partners in Cozumel have completed a post-storm assessment and have confirmed our visit for tomorrow, Saturday, July 6. We plan to arrive at 9:00 AM and depart at 5:00 PM. You must be back on board by 4:30 PM.”

“We understand that Hurricane Beryl had minimal impact on the general area, but some cleaning up will still be taking place while we are there, and you may see a little debris in some areas.”

“A letter with additional information will be distributed to your stateroom later this evening.”

“Thanks for your patience and understanding. Our thoughts remain with those who have been impacted by the storm.”

There are three cruise ships on the original schedule to visit Cozumel today, Carnival Valor, Carnival Paradise and Mariner of the Seas.

There are no ships scheduled to visit on Sunday.

Cozumel is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Caribbean with virtually all sailings to the Western Caribbean visiting the island.

He also confirmed that there are no changes to any Carnival itineraries for ships leaving this weekend.

In other Carnival Cruise Line news for this weekend, there will be a slightly delayed embarkation for Carnival Sunrise out of Long Beach, California due to the cruise ship’s quarterly U.S. Coast Guard inspection.

Another Fight On A Cruise Ship

In a week where a video of a Carnival cruise brawl went viral, another cruise fight video has been shared online – this time on a Royal Caribbean ship.

Mariner of the Seas

This fight is smaller than the Carnival brawl as it only involves two men, though it’s still a shocking and violent incident.

It’s not clear which ship this fight took place on. The account sharing the video states that it was a cruise out of Galveston.

Several Royal Caribbean ships are sailing from Galveston in 2024, including Jewel of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas.

However only Mariner and Harmony are sailing from Galveston during the summer, so if the video is contemporary, it’s likely to be one of those two ships. I would guess Mariner looking at the video, but I might be wrong.

It’s not clear what started the fight and how long it had already been occurring before the video was filmed.

Often passengers are kicked off a ship for a big fight, and potentially banned for life from cruising again. Whether this fight results in similar punishments remains to be seen.

Carnival Cruise Suite Perks Explained (Is It Worth Paying More?)

On Carnival cruise ships the best rooms are suites. If you’re trying to decide whether to book a balcony room or a suite, you’ll need to know what are the benefits of a suite so that you can decide whether it’s worth the upgrade or not.

Some suites have much better perks than others, so this is also worth factoring into your decision-making.

Carnival Grand Vista Suite
Grand Vista Suite

In this guide to Carnival cruise suites, I’ll show you the amenities and perks that you get with each type of suite, as well as some perks that you might expect to be included, but aren’t.

Suite benefits explained

On Carnival cruise ships, suites have separate areas for sitting and sleeping. Depending on the suite, you’ll also get perks such as priority check-in, boarding and debarkation, your first choice of dining times and free laundry. Suites are served by only the best room attendants, so you can expect better service.

There are many different types of suites, and the perks you’ll get vary depending on which suite you book.

Carnival Excel Presidential Suite

The different suites on Carnival ships

There are many different types of suites on Carnival cruise ships. These vary depending on the ship.

New ships Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee feature new ‘Excel’ suite types which come with the best perks of all.

List of all Carnival cruise suites and categories:

  • Excel Presidential Suites (SV)
  • Excel Aft Suites (LS)
  • Excel Corner Suites (KS)
  • Excel Suites (DS)
  • Captain’s Suites (CS)
  • Grand Vista Suites (GV)
  • Grand Suites (GS & ES)
  • Vista Suites (VS)
  • Ocean Suites (OS ans OT)
  • Junior Suites (JS and OB)
  • Cloud 9 Spa Suites (SS)
  • Family Harbor Suites (FS)
  • Family Harbor Ocean View Suites (FP)
  • Havana Cabana Suites (HS)
  • Havana Cabana Corner Suites (HU)

To help you avoid these worst cabins on Carnival Cruise, I’ve created a cabin checklist that you can get for free. Just enter your email address below and you’ll receive it in your inbox straight away.

Carnival suite perks: here’s what you get!

On Carnival cruise ships, there are some suite perks that you can expect whichever type of suite you choose. These seven perks are the same whether you choose the cheapest suite, or the most expensive.

The cheapest suites on Carnival cruise ships are Junior Suites and these also include the perks. This is different to Royal Caribbean, as Royal Caribbean Junior Suites don’t include anywhere near as many perks as Royal Caribbean’s Grand Suites and above. Princess Cruises Suite perks also differ between Mini-Suites and Suites.

1. Guaranteed dining time preference

When you book your Carnival cruise you can choose from Early Dining at 5.30 pm, Late Dining at 7.45 pm or Anytime Dining, where you just arrive whenever you like between 5.30 pm and 9.00 pm. While Anytime Dining is great, you may need to wait up to 20 minutes for a table to be ready.

You can request your preferred dining time (Early, Late or Anytime), but this is not guaranteed for most guests. However, Carnival suite guests are guaranteed to receive their first choice of dining preference.

2. Priority check-in and express boarding

On Carnival cruises, suite guests have special check-in privileges. Your cruise documents will be stamped with ‘Priority’ and when you arrive at the port you can head to the Priority Lounge where you’ll be expedited through the check-in procedure as quickly as possible.

3. Priority debarkation

On Carnival cruises, suite guests are allowed off the ship first, both in ports of call and at the end of the cruise. In ports that require a water shuttle, suite guests have a priority service from ship to shore. For ports where the cruise ship docks, suite guests have a special priority line.

4. Free laundry

Suite guests on Carnival cruises may enjoy one free bag of laundry per person, per cruise.

While this seems like a good deal, the usual price for a bag of laundry to be washed and folded is only $15. If you want dry cleaning or pressing, you’ll have to pay extra for this, whether you’re staying in a suite or not.

Suggested read: Guide to Laundry on Cruise Ships

5. Free water

On Carnival cruises, each suite comes with two complimentary bottles of water.

While these are large bottles of water and it’s a nice touch, it’s not too expensive to order water from room service or from the bar. The tap water is also perfectly safe to drink.

6. Service from the best stewards

Only the best Carnival room stewards are allowed to service the suites. So when you stay in a suite, you can be sure that your room attendant has many years of experience and is the very best at their job.

You can therefore be sure that your suite will always be perfectly clean and that your room attendant will be eager to help you wherever they can.

7. Bathrobes

Carnival suite guests are given complimentary Carnival bathrobes to wear during the cruise.

A semi-secret Carnival cruise tip is that anyone can get one of these bathrobes, even in a cheap inside room! All you need to do is ask your stateroom attendant and they will bring you the bathrobe to wear with no extra charge (although you may want to tip them).

Typical suite perks that you WON’T get with a Carnival suite

There are some Carnival VIP perks that you might expect suite guests to be able to access. However, these are only for VIFP Diamond or Platinum loyalty guests or those that have purchased a Faster To The Fun package.

1. Priority luggage

Carnival Cruise Line has to process thousands of bags, delivering each one to the right stateroom. Guests with a Faster To The Fun package and VIFP Diamond and Platinum guests will get their luggage first, but suite guests are not prioritised.

2. First access to stateroom

There’s no guarantee that your suite will be ready for you as soon as you board the ship. You may need to relax in the ship’s public areas while you wait. If you want to freshen up as soon as you board and you’re not a VIFP Diamond or Platinum guest, you’d need to buy a Faster To The Fun package.

3. Priority line and dedicated phone number for Guest Services

On Carnival cruises, the guest services team can get very busy. There’s a priority line at the desk and a VIP phone number, but this isn’t for suite guests. It’s only for VIFP Diamond or Platinum guests and those who have purchased the Faster To The Fun package.

Faster to the Fun – unnecessary?

You don’t really need Carnival’s Faster To The Fun package if you have a suite, as many of the perks that you get with Faster To The Fun come for free with a suite anyway. The only real Faster To The Fun extras you get on top are first access to your stateroom, faster luggage delivery and a priority line at guest services.

Many of the Faster To The Fun perks like the first choice of dining times, faster check-in and boarding, priority water shuttles services and faster debarkation are things that you’ll already get with your suite.

So, you can get Faster To The Fun as well, but it’s probably not worth it.

Suggested read: Is Faster To The Fun worth it?

So, are suites worth the upgrade?

If you value the extra space, the separate sleeping and living areas and the extra perks, then an upgrade to a suite on your Carnival cruise can be well worth it. However, if you’re concerned about your budget, you should know that suites can easily cost twice as much as balcony rooms.

When deciding between a suite versus a balcony room on a Carnival cruise, it’s wise to take note of the difference in price, as well as learning exactly what you can expect for your money.

Savvy cruisers will also consider the cost of gratuities as well as the ticket price. On Carnival cruises, gratuities cost $18 per person, per day for suite guests and $16 per person, per day for everybody else.

Suggested read: How to Upgrade Your Cruise Cabin After Purchase

Final thoughts

Carnival Cruise Line’s suites come with many benefits compared to balcony cabins. You’ll get upgraded amenities in your room like a bathtub, walk-in closet and separate living space. Plus, there are service perks like VIP check-in and water shuttles, so you can walk straight to the front of the line.

The perks vary depending on the suite, with Excel suites on the newest ships having the most perks of all.

Royal Caribbean Makes You Look With Utopia Of The Seas Godmother Announcement

Meghan Trainor, award-winning singer and songwriter, has been announced as the godmother for Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Utopia of the Seas.

Meghan Trainor Utopia of the Seas

Trainor will help to christen the ship in a spectacular 3-day ceremony that will be held onboard the ship and on the cruise line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

It will include a performance by Trainor on the island, and her full headliner show held on the ship in the outdoor AquaTheater.

The cruise line is offering the chance for 52 cruise fans to attend the full 3-day ceremony in a competition – but you don’t have long to enter as the contest closes on 7th July 2024.

“It’s an incredible honor to join the Royal Caribbean family as godmother of Utopia of the Seas and set the tone for the parties to come. The best part is that we get to bring that weekend energy to the stage with my family and fans.”

Meghan Trainor

The choice of a full 3-night party for a christening ceremony, and the fact that 52 guests are being chosen to join the cruise, is a nod to the way Utopia of the Seas is being branded as the ultimate weekend experience.

So the ceremony will reflect the typical 3-night cruise itineraries being offered for guests who want to join a weekend cruise (4-night weekday cruises will also be available) and there’ll be one cruise guest for every weekend of the year attending the ceremony.

Utopia of the Seas’ inaugural sailing will take place on 19th July 2024, with the 3-day naming ceremony being held from 16th July.

14-Year-Old Child Missing From Cruise Ship After Seemingly Disembarking Alone

A 14-year-old boy has gone missing from a cruise ship in Germany after being permitted to disembark the ship alone.

Caribbean Princess Cruise Ship

Aydin Brown, from the US, left the Caribbean Princess alone when it was docked in Warnemunde, the port nearest Berlin, on 4th July.

He should not have been permitted to disembark alone, as he is a child, but it’s unclear how this mistake happened.

Photo of Aydin released by German police

It’s reported that he had an argument with his grandmother on the ship before deciding to leave, though it’s unclear whether this is true.

He failed to return to the ship before it had to leave port, with CCTV footage appearing to show him at the train station, accompanied by a stranger.

Family members are posting updates on social media, concerned that he may have been lured away from the ship and potentially even abducted.

Brown’s mother has flown to Germany to assist police and to hopefully be reunited with her son – reports are that Princess Cruises has arranged the flight for her.

Brown is approximately 5’8″ tall. He has brown hair and eyes, and was last seen wearing a grey zip-up sweatshirt and dark trousers. He was carrying a black backpack with AMAZON written on it.

Police in Rostock are appealing for more witnesses as they continue their search.
