Hurricane Beryl To Wreak Havoc On Cruise Itineraries As She Reaches Category 4

Hurricane Beryl, the first official hurricane of the 2024 season, has already started to impact several cruise itineraries in the Caribbean.

Tropical hurricane

The storm reached Category 4 status on Sunday, the only hurricane to ever do so in June. Typically the first hurricane in a season appears in early August.

She’s now considered life-threatening and is heading into the heart of the Caribbean, with the expectation that she will continue to power through the region throughout the first half of this week.

Already some cruise lines have communicated with guests to let them know of changes to their itinerary, including Celebrity Cruises and NCL, writing to guests to inform them of port changes.

For now no cruise lines have cancelled sailings – typically during hurricane season most ships will aim to sail, even if they completely change their planned itinerary to avoid the ports in the path of the storm.

Guests will be able to claim refunds for any excursions they’ve booked for cancelled ports, but typically they won’t be due any other compensation. This is a risk that guests take when booking cruises during hurricane season.

Of course, any guests who’ve booked travel insurance with optional missed port cover can claim on their policy, even if the ports are replaced with alternatives.

Any guests with cruises in the Caribbean during hurricane season are advised to follow social media accounts for their cruise line, and keep an eye out for emails, to stay on top of any updates to their cruise.

Holland America Ships Ranked From Best To Worst (By Real Customer Reviews)

Holland America’s premium style of cruising is very popular. From the high-quality food to the comfortable, spacious accommodation choices, the ships are well-loved by loyal Holland America fans.

Cruise mummy with Holland America Ship

But what if you’re not already one of those loyal cruisers? If you’re looking to try your first cruise, which ship should you pick? They aren’t identical, so how do you know which one is most suited to you, and also which one is thought of as the best?

How I gathered the data

In this guide, I’ve ranked all 11 Holland America ships from best to worst, but I wanted to clarify exactly how I’ve done that.

Because, unfortunately, I’ve not yet had the pleasure of sailing on every Holland America ship. So to base it on my opinion alone would be a little unfair.

So instead, I’ve visited three of the biggest cruise review websites in the world – Cruise Critic, Cruiseline.com and TripAdvisor. And using those websites I’ve found the average review score for all 11 ships in the fleet, and I’ve based this ranking on putting those scores in order.

HAL ship

A couple of interesting points before I get started, just to add some context.

Firstly, something I always like to make clear is that “worst” ship does not mean “bad” ship. In fact with Holland America, the review scores are all pretty high. The “worst” ship on this list has an average score of 3.77 out of 5, which is pretty solid.

Secondly, the scores are also very tight, and so the difference between the best ship and the worst ship isn’t huge. The best ship on this list has an average of 4.07 out of 5, which means for the entire fleet, there’s only a difference of score of 0.3.

So as I take you through the list, just remember that we’re not talking about huge gulfs in class between each ship. The scores are based on thousands of reviews, so the ranking is accurate, but each ship is only marginally better or worse than the other.

With all that in mind, let’s find out which is the best Holland America ship (just), and which ship is unlucky enough to be in last place.

And the best ship is…

The best Holland America ship according to customer reviews is the MS Nieuw Statendam, although her average review score is only 0.4 better than MS Eurodam and 0.7 better than the newest ship in the fleet, MS Rotterdam.

1. MS Nieuw Statendam

The MS Nieuw Statendam is the second of the Pinnacle-class ships to sail for Holland America, and in the review scores, she has come out on top.

MS Nieuw Statendam

The Pinnacle-class ships are very popular with the cruise line’s regular guests, since they offer more spacious public areas and staterooms without really losing the feel of a smaller ship, even if they’re somewhat larger than the older ships in the fleet.

HAL dining experience

MS Nieuw Statendam is widely praised in customer reviews, with particular focus paid to just how beautiful the ship is. Artwork plays a big part of every ship in the Holland America fleet, but the choices made for MS Nieuw Statendam particularly wow guests. If the paintings and sculptures are worthy of being mentioned in a review, you know they’re special.

HAL stateroom

The service and food are also highly rated, while reviews of the cabins are majority positive, with just a handful saying that they are “adequate”. The biggest negative for the ship is the entertainment options during the day and evening, with some guests finding them to be a little bland.

2. MS Eurodam

Despite the popularity of the newer Pinnacle Class, it’s actually a slightly older ship that is the second most popular in the fleet – 2008’s MS Eurodam.

HAL Eurodam

Despite her age, she has been carefully refurbished to a high standard so that she still offers a comfortable ship environment, even if the decor isn’t quite as sleek as the later ships.

Guests love MS Eurodam because she epitomises everything that is good about Holland America. She’s a mid-sized ship that mostly doesn’t feel crowded, with a great variety of food and excellent service from the crew who really go out of their way to make guests feel special.

MS Eurodam - dining service

The entertainment on MS Eurodam is well-reviewed too. The bigger criticisms are more towards the couple of spaces that can feel a little busy at times – namely the Lido Marketplace buffet, and the reception area at the (very popular) spa on-board.

MS Eurodam - spa onboard

3. MS Rotterdam

The MS Rotterdam is the newest ship in the Holland America fleet and she shares a lot of the same positive feedback as her earlier sister ship MS Nieuw Statendam, with the artwork of the ship again being notably popular.

MS Rotterdam

Overall, Holland America ships are seen as some of the most stylish in the world, without being overly glitzy or kitsch.

MS Rotterdam lido pool

I think MS Rotterdam scores slightly lower than MS Nieuw Statendam due to teething problems. A lot of the reviews that talk about negatives mention slow service, the food not being the best, or problems with communication from the cruise line or ship – things which should be improving now that the ship has had more than a year in service.

There are some reviews that mention a perceived change in the service levels – as if the crew on MS Rotterdam aren’t quite as willing to care for guests as those on smaller ships, which could be a sign that as the ships are getting larger, guests are missing the really intimate feel of smaller ships.

Read more: MS Rotterdam Cabins To Avoid

4. MS Nieuw Amsterdam

MS Nieuw Amsterdam is the sister ship of MS Eurodam and is an almost identical size – officially she is marginally smaller by just 3 gross tons.

MS Nieuw Amsterdam

She launched back in 2010 and then underwent an extensive refit and refurbishment in 2017 to bring the public spaces more up-to-date.

MS Nieuw Amsterdam lido pool

The results are really positive, with reviews mentioning how clean and welcoming the ship feels. What also stands out is the service – while some people aren’t as happy with the standards on the slightly newer ships, on MS Nieuw Amsterdam the crew are very highly spoken of.

Criticisms of the ship mainly focus on how she is tailored towards an older market, and so late-night entertainment is limited, with some noting that the food has some issues and some of the popular public areas did still get a little crowded at times, despite the overall space of the ship.

5. MS Oosterdam

The MS Oosterdam is one of four ships that make up the Vista class, each one named for a point on the compass in Dutch (“oost” = “east”). She launched in 2003 and remains a very popular ship in the fleet, thanks to her comfortable atmosphere and balance of the traditional and modern sides of cruising.

MS Oosterdam ship

MS Oosterdam is not a big flashy ship although she does feature Holland America’s Music Walk which features live music in the evening. During the day things are more sedate, which may suit some people more than others – if you like a long list of activities, you might feel a little bored.

MS Oosterdam - Show lounge, entertainment

The ship feels like classical cruising, but with a more modern update thanks to careful renovation. There are still some parts of the ship that feel a little dated though, which is noted in some reviews.

Read more: MS Oosterdam Cabins To Avoid

6. MS Koningsdam

I would say that I’m a little surprised MS Koningsdam is so low on this list, but going back to what I said at the start of the guide, the scores are very tight between the ships and MS Koningsdam does have an average score of 3.9 out of 5, which is still very good.

MS Koningsdam

The ship debuted in 2016 to a lot of pomp – this was the first new ship to launch for Holland America in six years and she helped to really bring the cruise line up to date with her stunning interior design.

MS Koningsdam - spa

However, the reason she is a little lower is something I alluded to with MS Rotterdam – to guests, it feels like the newer, bigger ships have lost a little of the Holland America magic, and the crew service isn’t quite as good when there are more passengers to handle.

Guests criticise the quality of the entertainment too, which may be a sign that guests of other cruise lines with Broadway-style shows are trying the newer Holland America ships, and feeling disappointed with the comparison.

MS Koningsdam world stage

7. MS Westerdam

MS Westerdam was the third ship in the Vista Class to launch, first setting sail in 2004. She has been carefully renovated and updated over the years, including the addition of the Music Walk entertainment for the evening, which has helped to give her a new lease of life.

MS Westerdam ship

That’s not to say she’s completely modern – there are parts of the ship that very much have the decor of the time, but if you want a ship that feels cosy and comfortable, that blends the feelings of a classic ship with the cleanliness of a more contemporary one – then MS Westerdam could be ideal.

MS Westerdam pinnacle suite

Reviews mention how good the service is, although the food does have some mixed reviews – more related to the service of food rather than the quality, which is widely regarded as excellent.

MS Westerdam lido pool

There isn’t a lot to do during the day and, like most Holland America ships, the kids’ areas are a little dated and dull. But if you enjoy exploring ports or don’t mind spending your day poolside, you’ll like the atmosphere of MS Westerdam.

Read more: MS Westerdam Cabins To Avoid

8. MS Zuiderdam

MS Zuiderdam ship

MS Zuiderdam is another Vista-class ship – the first to launch, back in 2002. And she shares many of the similar positives and negatives as her sister ships do, including decor that has been suitably updated but does remain a little bit dated in places, as does the pool area, as called out in a handful of reviews.

MS Zuiderdam pool area

Like her sister ships, she has good quality evening entertainment thanks to the Music Walk, but her daytime activities are a little lacking. Guests on Zuiderdam do comment on the quality of the enrichment offerings, including lectures on the ports being visited and the library resources, but it’s certainly not a ship that is thrill-a-minute during daytime hours.

MS Zuiderdam - Music walk

The standards of service are still overwhelmingly high, with just a few minor comments from those who’ve had a bad experience with the food or who’ve had issues during their stay. Most people find the ship to be relaxing, but definitely tailored to a more mature audience.

Read more: MS Zuiderdam Cabins To Avoid

9. MS Zaandam

MS Zaandam is one of the older ships in the Holland America fleet, and one of two ships still remaining from the R Class.

MS Zaandam

She’s also quite old in style, which has pros and cons – she’s not got many balconies or indeed much choice at all when it comes to cabin options, but she’s also really easy to navigate.

MS Zaandam Neptune suite

Guests don’t seem to mind the lack of balconies, which is understandable since they know what they’re booking when they choose their cruise. The dated style of the ship doesn’t get much of a mention either – again, guests on Zaandam seem to have a good idea of what to expect, and love the ship for her smaller, more personable atmosphere.

MS Zaandam pool

Negative reviews tend to focus on the entertainment – both the lack of choice and also the quality, with some reviewers talking about how the evening acts are average but not particularly exciting.

Read more: MS Zaandam Cabins To Avoid

10. MS Volendam

MS Volendam is the oldest ship currently sailing for Holland America Line, having first launched back in 1999.

MS Volendam ship

Sister ship to the MS Zaandam, her design is very similar, meaning she has a very simple layout and she is lacking in a lot of entertainment facilities and cabin options, including those with a balcony.

And while she may be the second-worst ship on this list according to customer reviews, her average scores are still high. That’s because people know what to expect from her, and are generally really happy with the experience. This is traditional cruising – exceptional service and a focus on the core relaxation and exploration experiences rather than a lot of flashy facilities to fill your day.

The negative reviews of MS Volendam do focus on the age of the ship though – she has been through renovations, but there are a lot of signs of how old she is, and passengers do notice them. If you don’t mind her feeling a little worn-in then you’ll still have a great time.

Read more: MS Volendam Cabins To Avoid

11. MS Noordam

MS Noordam is the final ship in the list, considered the “worst” by customer review and yet still rated quite highly.

MS Noordam

Launched in 2006, she was the last of the Vista-class ships and many of the reviews are similar in nature to her sisters.

This means customers love the size of the ship, and the balance between spacious public areas and a more intimate cruising experience, helped by the high standards of service from the crew who take the time to learn everyone’s names and drink orders, making you feel special.

Negatives are the lack of real excitement during the day, and limited options at night, including a lack of quality to the evening entertainment when compared with other cruise lines. Some reviews do mention her feeling a little older too, but it’s a minor quibble generally – more reviews comment on how clean and well-kept she is.

Choosing the best Holland America ship for you

When it comes to choosing the best Holland America ship for you, it really depends what you’re looking for.

The newer ships are very popular, with the added size used to good effect to increase the spaces where you can relax. But a lot of passengers prefer the feel of the smaller, older ships where the crew feel a touch more personable.

The bottom line

It’s worth remembering what I said at the start – the score difference between the ships in the Holland America fleet is relatively minimal, and on pretty much any ship you’ll have a great time.

Still, it’s worth bearing the review comments in mind because the ships are different, and will suit different cruise guests. The larger, more modern ships have more to do onboard, and they’re much more contemporary, but you can expect to pay a price that reflects that.

Meanwhile, choose an older ship and you’ll still get the great service and food standards that the cruise line is known for, but with a much more intimate atmosphere and potentially a lower fare.

Your experience onboard will also be dictated by the type of cabin you choose, so make sure you read my guides on the best and worst cabins on each ship, and check out the Holland America suite perks too, to see if upgrading is worth the cost.

Viking River Cruise Packing List

Stay in the Loop with Our Free Cruise Newsletter: Uncover the Latest News and Exclusive Deals. Sign Up

When it comes to packing for a river cruise, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind. With the right items in your suitcase, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your adventures along the rivers of Europe.

Our Complete Viking River Cruise Packing List

Your footwear choices are important, from comfortable walking shoes for exploring picturesque villages to dressier shoes for elegant nights onboard. Be sure to pack travel documents, including your passport and any necessary visas.

It’s also wise to bring a travel umbrella for any changeable weather conditions. Remember to wear comfortable clothing items, such as lightweight layers for the summer months and clothing appropriate for visits to religious sites. This complete list will prepare you for an unforgettable river cruise experience.

Pack Your Cruise Carry-On Bag Wisely

Packing your cruise carry-on bag wisely ensures a smooth and hassle-free beginning to your trip. By including essential items in your carry-on, you can be prepared for any situation that may arise during travel.

First and foremost, it’s important to include a change of clothes in your carry-on. This is particularly essential in case your checked luggage is delayed or misplaced. A fresh set of clothes can provide comfort and peace of mind.

Remember to pack toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and any other personal care items you may need. Bringing any necessary medications in your carry-on bag is also a good idea. This will ensure that you have access to them throughout your journey.

Of course, essential documents such as your passport, travel insurance, and cruise reservation details should also be kept in your carry-on bag. These documents are essential for check-in and should be easily accessible.

Consider investing in wheeled under-seat luggage to make transporting your carry-on bag easier. These compact luggage options are ideal for carrying your essentials and can fit neatly under the seat before you, providing easy access throughout your journey.

Storage on Board a Viking River Long Ship

Regarding storage options on board a river cruise vessel, you’ll find ample drawer and cupboard space in the cabins to keep your belongings organized. Despite the limited space in the cabins, cruise ship designers have ensured enough storage to minimize clutter and ensure a comfortable living space.

The drawers in the cabin allow for easy storage of clothing items, accessories, and personal belongings. You can neatly stow away your folded clothes, undergarments, and even small electronics in these drawers, keeping them easily accessible and out of sight.

In addition to the drawers, there are cupboards in the cabin where you can hang your formal attire or other garments that must be kept wrinkle-free. These cupboards provide a convenient space to store your clothing items, giving you easy access whenever you need to dress up for formal nights or special occasions.

To further optimize storage space, you can slide empty suitcases or bags under the beds. This prevents them from taking up unnecessary space in the cabin and allows you to keep them safely stored during your river cruise. I also regularly place any dirty laundry back into one of my suitcases to help keep the cabin clean and uncluttered during the cruise.

Consider Your Cruise Itinerary

When packing for your Viking River cruise, it’s essential to consider your cruise itinerary. The destinations you’ll be visiting and the activities you’ll be participating in will determine what items you must bring along. Please pack the appropriate attire, such as dresses or suits, if your itinerary includes visits to religious sites or formal events. If you are exploring larger cities or participating in outdoor activities, comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for changeable conditions are a must. I want you to know that being mindful of your itinerary will help ensure you have all the necessary clothing and accessories to enjoy your Viking River cruise fully.

How Long is Your Cruise

When planning for your Viking River Cruise, it is essential to consider the length of your trip. Most river cruises range from 7 to 15 days, and it is crucial to plan accordingly for the duration of your cruise.

Knowing the length of your cruise is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it helps you determine the number of clothing items and accessories you will need to pack. For a shorter cruise, you may be able to get by with a few versatile clothing pieces, while a longer trip may require more variety.

Additionally, the length of your cruise affects the number of travel documents and essential items you should bring. For example, if your cruise itinerary takes you to multiple countries, you may need to bring different currencies or travel adapters for electrical outlets.

Understanding the length of your river cruise also allows you to plan for any on-board amenities or services you may need. For instance, longer cruises may require you to use laundry or dry cleaning services, while shorter trips may not require these services.

Are there Laundry Facilities on Board?

While Viking River Cruises does not offer self-service laundry facilities on most of their river cruise ships, they provide an onboard laundry service to cater to guests’ laundry needs. This convenient service allows you to wash your clothing items, dry and pressed, saving you the hassle of finding a laundromat during your cruise.

You do have the option to use self-service launderettes available on board ships sailing Mississippi itineraries. These self-service launderettes include irons and ironing boards and are free of charge, with detergent available for your use at no additional cost.

The prices for the laundry service on Viking River Cruises vary depending on the clothing item. For example, as of 2023, washing and pressing a shirt costs $8, while washing and pressing a blouse costs $8.50. Similar prices apply to other garments, such as underwear, nightgowns, and polo shirts.

The turnaround time for the laundry service is typically within 24 hours, ensuring that you receive your freshly cleaned clothes in a timely manner. This allows you to have clean and wrinkle-free garments throughout your cruise, whether exploring fascinating destinations or enjoying the onboard amenities.

Please keep in mind that prices and turnaround times are subject to change, so it’s always recommended to consult Viking River Cruises’s latest information regarding their laundry service.

So, while self-service laundry facilities may not be available on board Viking River cruises, their convenient onboard laundry service ensures you can easily care for your laundry needs during your river cruise vacation.

Review the Shore Excursions

When you embark on a Viking River cruise, you can look forward to various exciting shore excursions that showcase the best of each destination. From optional easy hikes to cultural evening excursions, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

For those interested in cultural experiences, Viking River Cruises offers a variety of evening excursions. These excursions often include visits to iconic landmarks or historic sites, where you can learn about each destination’s rich history and local traditions.

What to Wear on a River Cruise

When packing for a river cruise, it’s important to consider the activities and destinations you’ll be exploring. While river ships tend to have a relaxed atmosphere, a few occasions may call for slightly dressier attire.

Although Viking doesn’t have any designated Formal nights, guests can dress up and enjoy special evenings onboard. However, comfortable and casual clothing is recommended for most of your cruise.

Be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes for exploring the ports of call and a dressier pair for any evening events. You can choose to pack light and use the onboard laundry services available.

Pack with Mix and Match in Mind

When packing for a river cruise, it’s important to pack with mix and match in mind to maximize your outfit options while keeping your luggage light and compact. Here are five tips to help you pack smartly for your river cruise:

1. Consider a predominantly neutral color scheme: Choose clothing items in versatile neutral colors like black, white, navy, and khaki. This will make it easier to mix and match different pieces together.

2. Pack versatile travel pants: Invest in comfortable and wrinkle-resistant travel pants that can be dressed up or down. Look for pants made from lightweight and quick-drying fabrics for maximum comfort during your cruise.

3. Add accessories for pops of color: To add variety and personality to your outfits, pack a brightly colored scarf, shawl, or jacket. These accessories instantly transform a basic outfit into a stylish and eye-catching ensemble.

4. Don’t forget a dressier outfit: While river cruises are generally casual, there may be occasions or dining events that call for dressier attire. Pack a versatile dress or pair of dress pants, a blouse, or a dress shirt for these special occasions.

5. Mix and match outfits: Before packing, plan your outfits by mixing and matching different tops, bottoms, and accessories. This will help you pack more efficiently and ensure that you have various outfit options for different occasions throughout your cruise.

Following these tips and packing with mix and match in mind, you can create a versatile and compact wardrobe for your river cruise that will keep you stylish and comfortable throughout your journey.

Layer Your Outfits

When packing for a river cruise, it’s essential to consider layering outfits to accommodate changes in temperature and different occasions. Here are some key clothing items to include for effective outfit layering:

Tops: Opt for versatile tops that can be easily layered. Pack a mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve tops in neutral colors like black, white, or navy. When the temperature drops, these can be worn alone on warmer days or paired with jackets or scarves.

Jackets: Bring lightweight jackets that can easily be layered over your tops. Consider a denim jacket or a lightweight cardigan that can be worn indoors and outdoors, adding warmth and style to your outfits.

Scarves and Shawls: These accessories provide an extra layer of warmth and add a pop of color and style to your outfits. Pack a couple of scarves or shawls in different patterns and colors to mix and match with your tops and jackets.

Remember to choose versatile pieces that can be easily layered and removed as needed. This will ensure you stay comfortable and adaptable to changing weather conditions and activities during your river cruise. With these layering options, you’ll be ready for any occasion while maintaining a stylish and practical wardrobe.

Viking River Cruise Day Wear

Regarding cruise day wear on a river cruise, comfort is key. Opt for comfortable, casual attire that allows for easy movement and enjoyment of the various activities onboard. Lightweight trousers or jeans paired with breathable, lightweight tops are a great choice. Choose tops in neutral colors that can be easily mixed and matched with different bottoms.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the various ports of call. Pack a pair of sturdy, comfortable shoes that withstand long walks and uneven terrain. A lightweight jacket or sweater is also a good addition to your cruise day attire, especially for cooler weather or air-conditioned areas onboard.

In addition to the basics, consider bringing a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun while enjoying the outdoor areas of the cruise. A lightweight travel scarf can also be a versatile accessory, providing extra warmth when needed or adding a pop of color to your outfit. Remember to pack clothing items that you feel comfortable and confident in, as you’ll spend ample time exploring and socializing onboard the river ship.

Viking River Cruise Evening Wear

While there are no formal nights on a Viking River cruise, passengers can dress up for the evening if they wish. The dress code for cruise evenings is generally elegant casual, allowing you to be stylish and comfortable at the same time.

A dress, skirt, or even a nice pair of pants paired with a blouse or sweater would be appropriate for women. You can also mix and match different pieces to create multiple outfits throughout your trip. Adding accessories like statement necklaces or scarves can elevate your look even more.

Men can opt for trousers paired with collared shirts. A blazer or sports coat can add a touch of sophistication to the outfit.

The key is to feel confident and put together while still being comfortable. Remember, the evenings on a river cruise are more about relaxation and enjoying the company of fellow passengers rather than adhering to a strict dress code. So, feel free to express your personal style and have fun with your evening attire.

Pack for the Conditions

When packing for a river cruise, preparing for various weather conditions is essential. Whether cruising through cold and wet climates or enjoying sunny and hot destinations, having the right items can make all the difference in your comfort and enjoyment.

For colder and wetter weather, you must pack lightweight gloves and a hat to keep you warm. Layering is also essential, so bring a variety of long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a waterproof jacket. Comfortable walking shoes with good traction are a must-have to navigate slippery decks and cobblestone streets.

On the other hand, protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is essential when cruising in sunnier and hotter destinations. Pack plenty of sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and lightweight, breathable clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are still important, as you’ll likely explore ports of call during your cruise.

Regardless of the weather conditions, comfortable walking shoes are a necessary item to pack for a river cruise. With the amount of walking and exploring you’ll be doing, it’s important to have shoes that provide support and cushioning. Consider packing a pair that can be dressed up for formal nights and a more casual pair for daytime activities.

Best Shoes for a Viking River Cruise

When it comes to choosing the best shoes for a river cruise, comfort and practicality should be your top priorities. Given the amount of walking and potential uneven surfaces you may encounter, it’s crucial to pack comfortable walking shoes with good grip. This will ensure that you can easily navigate slippery decks and cobblestone streets, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Look for shoes with solid traction to provide stability, especially during wet weather.

In addition to a sturdy pair of walking shoes, bringing a second pair of day shoes to wear around the ship is also advisable. These can be more relaxed, offering support and comfort as you explore the ship’s various amenities. For evening excursions, it’s worth considering packing one pair of dressier shoes to complement your attire for formal nights or when visiting more upscale establishments.

Consider wearing compression socks during long-haul flights to keep your feet feeling their best. These socks can help prevent swelling and improve circulation, ensuring you arrive at your river cruise destination with happy and comfortable feet ready for exploration.

Personal Items, Adapters & Chargers

Viking River ships are equipped with North American and European power outlets so that you can charge your devices without worry. However, bringing a universal adapter to ensure compatibility with any outlets you encounter during your travels is always a good idea. This will allow you to charge your phone, camera, or any other electronic device conveniently, keeping you connected and capturing precious memories throughout your European river cruise.

While Viking provides a selection of toiletries in each cabin, you may still prefer to bring specific personal products you are accustomed to. This could include shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, or any other toiletries you require for your daily routine.

Furthermore, Viking River cruise cabins are usually equipped with USB ports, making it even easier to charge your devices. You can leave those bulky chargers at home and bring your USB cables for quicker and more convenient charging.

Travel Documents

When preparing for a Viking River cruise, one of the most crucial aspects is having all the necessary travel documents in order. These documents ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey, allowing guests to relax and enjoy their river cruise experience.

First and foremost, guests should have their passports readily accessible. Passports are required for international travel and serve as proof of identity. Ensuring your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date is essential. Additionally, some countries may require a visa for entry. It is vital to research and obtain any necessary visas before your trip.

In some instances, some river cruise itineraries may require guests to have specific vaccination records. This is particularly important for destinations where certain diseases are prevalent. To avoid complications, check with your healthcare provider or visit a travel clinic to receive the necessary vaccinations and obtain the corresponding records.

Bring a Day Bag

When embarking on a river cruise, having a well-equipped day bag is important to make the most of your port stops and excursions. A smaller bag is recommended for convenience and easy carrying during your day trips.

Here are some essential items to include in your day bag for a river cruise:

1. Travel documents: Securely keep your identification and necessary visas in your day bag.

2. Money and credit cards: Ensure you have enough cash and credit cards to cover expenses during your day trips.

3. Bottled water and snacks: Stay hydrated and energized throughout the day with a refillable water bottle and some nutritious snacks.

4. Sunscreen and hat: Protect yourself from the sun’s rays by packing sunscreen and a hat to shield your face from the heat.

5. Raincoat or umbrella: Be prepared for changeable conditions with a lightweight raincoat or a compact, collapsible umbrella.

6. Comfortable walking shoes: Choose sturdy, comfortable shoes for walking during your shore excursions.

7. Camera or smartphone: Capture extraordinary moments and scenic views with a camera or smartphone to document your river cruise experience.

8. Map or guidebook: Carry a map or guidebook of the destinations you will visit to help you navigate and learn about the history and culture.

What to Leave at Home

When packing for a river cruise, it’s essential to consider what items you can leave at home to avoid unnecessary clutter in your suitcase. Most river cruise ships provide standard amenities and services, making items redundant. Here are some things you can confidently leave behind:

1. Computers: River cruise ships typically offer Wi-Fi and onboard computers for guest use, so there’s no need to bring your laptop or tablet.

2. Hairdryers: River ships usually provide hairdryers in cabin bathrooms, so you can save space by not packing your own.

3. Excess clothing: River cruises tend to have a relaxed atmosphere, so there’s no need to pack fancy formal wear or multiple outfits for every day. Stick to comfortable, casual clothing that can be mixed and matched.

Remember to pack essentials like travel documents, comfortable walking shoes, and a camera to capture precious memories. By leaving unnecessary items behind, you’ll have a lighter load and more room for those souvenirs you will surely pick up along the way. Happy cruising!

Check the Weather Forecast

When preparing for your Viking River Cruise, it’s important to check the weather forecast for the cities and destinations you plan to visit. Here are the steps to ensure you are well-prepared:

1. Research the destinations: List the cities and ports of call along your river cruise itinerary. This will help you narrow down the areas you need to check the weather.

2. Use reputable weather websites or apps: Check weather forecast websites or reliable weather apps for up-to-date information. Some popular options include AccuWeather, Weather.com, and the Weather Channel app.

3. Enter the specific location: Enter the name of each city or destination you’ll be visiting to retrieve accurate weather information. Please pay attention to hourly and daily forecasts to fully understand the expected conditions.

4. Consider the river breeze: During the summer, river cruises can experience cool breezes. Pack a lightweight jacket or sweater to layer up in case the evenings or early mornings are chilly.

5. Be prepared for changeable conditions: Weather can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to pack clothing that can be layered to adapt to different conditions. This way, you’ll be ready for both warm and cooler temperatures.

Follow the Dress Code & Pack Accordingly

When preparing for a river cruise, it’s essential to consider the dress code and pack accordingly carefully. Here are key points to keep in mind:

1. Check the dress code: Viking’s river cruise dress codes states the following in 2024

During the day, dress is casual including shorts (if the season is warm), slacks or jeans and comfortable shoes for walking tours. There are no “formal nights” in the evening; recommended evening dress is “elegant casual.” For ladies, this may include a dress, skirt or slacks with a sweater or blouse; and for gentlemen, trousers and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional.

Some shore excursions visit religious sites that require modesty of dress. To avoid being denied entry, we recommend men wear long pants and refrain from sleeveless shirts; and for women, clothing that covers the knees and tops that are not sleeveless or too revealing.

Reviewing this will ensure you pack the appropriate attire and, more importantly, feel comfortable among your fellow passengers during your cruise.

Review the River Cruise Itinerary

When preparing for a river cruise, it is crucial to review the itinerary to understand better the excursions and unique outings offered at each port. This information will help you plan your activities and determine additional items to pack.

The river cruise itinerary provides a detailed schedule of the ports you will visit and the activities available at each stop. From historic landmarks to charming villages, each destination offers its own set of experiences. By looking over the itinerary, you can prioritize the excursions that interest you the most and make arrangements if you need them.

For example, if the itinerary includes visits to historic sites or religious landmarks, it is essential to pack appropriate clothing items that cover the shoulders and knees. On the other hand, if you plan to embark on outdoor adventures like hiking or biking tours, pack appropriate attire and footwear.

The river cruise itinerary will outline any unique outings or activities, such as wine tastings, culinary experiences, or cultural performances. Knowing these details in advance allows you to pack any necessary items, such as formal attire for special events or comfortable attire for more relaxed outings.

Keep It Simple

When it comes to packing for a Viking River Cruise, keeping it simple can make your journey all the more enjoyable. You can create multiple outfit combinations without overloading your suitcase by adopting a simple color scheme for your clothing items and packing mix-and-match options.

Comfort is key on a river cruise, so opt for comfortable and wrinkle-resistant clothing. Viking recommends comfortable walking shoes for exploring each port of call and a dressier pair for formal nights or special events.

Due to changeable conditions along the rivers, it’s wise to pack a lightweight jacket or sweater to layer up and adjust to the weather. Remember essentials like sunglasses and a sun hat to shield yourself from the sun’s rays during those leisurely days on deck.

While most river cruise ships provide umbrellas, it’s always a good idea to have a collapsible one in your bag in case of unexpected showers during excursions. This will ensure you stay dry while exploring.

Cruise Lines Watching Hurricane Beryl As It Heads Towards the Caribbean

The first hurricane has formed in 2024 and it’s forecasted to enter the Caribbean this week.  Hurricane Beryl is now a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

How will Hurricane Beryl affect cruise ships this week?

Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Tobago are currently under a hurricane warning. The storm is expected to pass over or near the islands on Monday morning.

There are no cruise ships scheduled to visit these islands over the next four days.

Hurricane Beryl is currently expected to pass just south of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands midweek before heading towards Mexico. Of course, the forecasted models are subject to change as the storm moves into the Caribbean.

While it is rare that cruises get canceled when hurricanes and tropical storms form, cruise lines will often change itineraries to keep guests and crew safe.  This might mean sailing to the Eastern Caribbean instead of the Western Caribbean where the storm is currently on track to visit.

Other times, port visits will be replaced with sea days as cruise lines keep ships away from storms. To read more about what happens when there’s a hurricane or tropical storm during your cruise, you can read our Cruise Hurricane Guide here.

To see the latest information on Hurricane Beryl, you can visit the National Hurricane Center.

Cruise Fever will continue to monitor Hurricane Beryl and will have all updates from cruise lines as they are announced. We have reached out to the major cruise lines and will update this article when we hear back.

Update: Carnival Cruise Line has responded to our inquiry and said that at this time, they have not many any changes to cruises.

Everything You Need To Know About P&O Cruises’ WiFi (Including Cost & How To Buy)

P&O Cruises don’t include WiFi in your cruise fare (pretty much no cruise line does), so if you want to use the internet while at sea, you’ll need to pay for it.

In this guide, I’ll show you all of the P&O Cruises internet packages and how to buy them, so that you can access the internet during your cruise without spending any more than you need to.

P&O Cruises wifi

But wait – do you even need WiFi?

Before you go ahead and buy a wifi package, let’s think about whether you actually need one or not…

Can you use mobile data?

Whenever the ship is docked, you’ll usually be able to access 3G, 4G or 5G data. Even since Brexit, many mobile phone providers let you use your standard data allowance in Europe for no extra cost.

Outside of Europe, you’ll likely have to pay for data on your phone. But this doesn’t always cost a lot, so be sure to check with your mobile network before you go.

You can also use mobile data while at sea, but I definitely would not recommend that. Once the ship leaves port, your phone will connect to a maritime network and it will cost you a lot.

You can understand how much data roaming at sea costs and why here: How to Avoid Roaming Charges on a Cruise.

You could try switching off…

Unless you have a family member or urgent business to worry about back home, you might consider turning your phone off while your ship is at sea.

Most cruises have no more than two consecutive sea days and it can be great to spend time connecting with the people you’re with without looking at your phone.

If there’s ever an emergency at home, your family members would be able to contact the ship and pass on a message.

The ‘My Holiday’ platform still works without WiFi

During your cruise, you can use P&O Cruises’ My Holiday to view your onboard account, make dining and theatre reservations, join virtual queues and book shore excursions.

The My Holiday planner isn’t an app, it’s a website. But you won’t need a WiFi package to access it, as you can do so using P&O Cruises’ limited free WiFi. Just connect to ‘P&OCruises_Guest_WIFI’ and then use your browser to visit myholiday.pocruises.com.

P&O Cruises Wifi Packages

If you’ve decided that you would like to have internet access during your P&O Cruise, here’s how you can arrange that…

P&O Cruises offer two different wifi packages, plus a ‘Pay Per Minute’ option:

1. Essential WiFi

Cost: £18 for 24 hours (or £12 per day for the whole cruise)

P&O Cruises’ Essential WiFi is only for social media, web browsing and email. So you can check your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as well as send messages via WhatsApp.

With this package, it used to be the case that you couldn’t check your emails or browse the web for information. But, after some feedback from guests with complaints along the lines of “I bought the internet package and I can’t use the internet”, web browsing and email is now included.

2. Ultimate WiFi

Cost: £24 for 24 hours (or £18 per day for the whole cruise)

Ultimate WiFi gives you a faster connection and allows you to use voice and video calling, and stream music and video in addition to browsing the internet, sending emails and using social media and WhatsApp.

P&O Cruises wifi plans comparison

I’ve had a bad experience with the Ultimate WiFi before. I bought it on my late-2022 cruise on Arvia and it was so slow that it was virtually unusable. It wouldn’t allow me to upload videos to social media so I couldn’t update my Instagram stories.

On Christmas Day, the WiFididn’t work at all (I expect that was because of the increased number of guests wanting to use it).

But – and it’s an important but – the WiFi has been upgraded to Starlink since then, which is the speedy satellite WiFi that’s becoming standard across the fleet. So it should be much more reliable.

When’s best to buy the WiFi?

If you intend to buy a P&O Cruises WiFi package for your whole cruise, then you can buy before your cruise or once on board. 24-hour plans can only be purchased on board.

Sign on P&O Cruises ship with wifi.

Before you cruise

To buy a WiFi package before your cruise, you’ll need to log in to the P&O Cruises Planner. Alternatively, you can call P&O Cruises’ contact centre on 0344 338 8003 (local call charges apply).

Buying onboard

Once you’re onboard your P&O Cruises ship, it’s easy to buy a WiFi package. Just open the My Holiday planner and navigate to WiFi.

Alternatively, you can connect to the free guest WiFi, go to internet.pocruises.com and follow the on-screen instructions.

You’ll see all of the WiFi options along with prices. Just tap the one you want and it will be billed to your onboard account.

Sharing a WiFi package

One important thing to know about the P&O WiFi is that you can use it on multiple devices, so long as you don’t connect both devices at the same time. So if there are two of you, you can just purchase one package and take it in turns to use it.

This does, however, mean that you can’t use the WiFi to message each other while you’re on the ship. But, it can save you quite a lot of money.

p&o cruises wifi multiple devices

If you try to log in when the other person is already logged in, you can tap a button to kick them off the WiFi so you can use it.

There is a 10% discount for multiple devices, but this is only if two devices are registered to the same guest.

P&O Cruises wifi multiple devices

WiFi for medical devices

If you need internet access for medical reasons such as a continuous glucose monitoring device for diabetes, you can get this free of charge on P&O Cruises. Just ask at the reception desk on board for a free internet voucher.

No smartphone?

Most P&O Cruises ships have a library with public computers that you can use to access the internet if you don’t have a working smartphone or tablet. These are open 24 hours per day. However, the newer ships, Arvia and Iona do not have public computers.

Should you need to print anything off, you can do so in the library for 30p per sheet. A scanning service is also available at Guest Services.

Is the WiFi worth it?

WiFi at sea is never as fast as the WiFi that you’re used to at home, even with the Starlink upgrades. The speed that you’ll get depends on where you are on the ship and how many other people are using the WiFi at the same time.

There are always blackspots on cruise ships, so head to a public lounge for your best chance of getting a good signal.

But it won’t be as problematic now that Starlink is installed. You shouldn’t struggle to get online at all, especially if you pay for the Ultimate WiFi package – there might just be one or two spots where it’s a struggle.

Personally, I don’t think that buying WiFi for your whole cruise is worth it. There are lots more fun things to be doing on a cruise ship rather than looking at your phone!

But, if you really need to stay in touch on sea days, then buying a P&O Cruises’ WiFi package in 24-hour blocks is a good option.

The Best & Worst Rooms on the Ship in 2024

When planning a cruise on Regal Princess, it’s definitely a good idea to take a look at the cabins to choose the best one. There are lots of different rooms on Regal Princess and, as with any cruise ship, there are some less desirable cabins that you’ll probably do well to avoid.

Regal Princess rooms

I’ve spent around twelve hours studying the Regal Princess deck plan and reading all the comments in cruise forums and Facebook groups. I’ve condensed all of my findings into this simple guide, to make it easy for you to choose the best cabin on Regal Princess for your cruise.

Make sure you keep reading all the way to the ‘cabins to avoid’ section, as I’d hate for you to book one of these dodgy cabins and have it ruin your holiday.

Regal Princess Cabin Types

There are five cabin types to choose from on Regal Princess:

Room Sleeps Size (incl. balcony)
Interior 2 to 4 158 to 162 sq. ft.
Balcony 2 to 4 179 to 222 sq. ft.
Deluxe Balcony 2 to 4 233 to 279 sq. ft.
Mini-Suite 2 to 4 323 sq. ft.
Suite 2 to 4 440 to 1,507 sq. ft.

Unlike some other ships like Sky Princess, the Regal Princess cruise ship does not have any Ocean View cabins with windows.

When choosing the best cabin on Regal Princess, you should consider not just the cabin type, but also the location on the ship as well as your overall budget.

I’ve made a checklist of things you should be aware of when choosing a cruise cabin. You can get it for free here…

Regal Princess Inside Cabins

Regal Princess inside cabin
Interior Cabin on Regal Princess

The cheapest cabins on Regal Princess are Inside cabins. Sleeping two or four people, these have no windows, so there’s no natural light in the room. They’re also the smallest rooms on the ship.

If you’re on a budget and prefer to spend your time exploring the ship rather than sitting in your room, an inside cabin could be perfect for you.

Inside cabins on Regal Princess have twin beds that can be converted to a queen-size bed. Some cabins also have third and fourth Pullman beds, which are ideal for kids but can also be used by adults.

Suggested read: What is a Pullman bed?

If you want an inside cabin for a couple without kids, I would strongly recommend that you choose one without the upper Pullman beds. Rather than being hidden in the ceiling as on some ships, the Pullman beds on Regal Princess are attached to the wall. Cruisers have complained that they find themselves regularly bashing their heads on the Pullmans when getting in and out of bed.

Regal Princess Inside Cabin Grades

The cabins on Regal Princess are each assigned a grade. The first letter of the grade code (I) means Inside, and the second letter refers to the location on the ship.

The higher grades of Inside cabins cost a little more, but they’re generally larger and in a more desirable midship location rather than right at the front or back.

Grade Sleeps up to Average Size (sq ft)
IA 4 175
IB 4 166 / 175
IC 4 166 / 175
ID 4 166
IE 4 166
IF 2 166

Regal Princess Balcony Rooms

The next step up from an Inside cabin on Regal Princess is a Balcony cabin. These have sliding doors leading out onto a private balcony where you can sit and enjoy the fresh sea air.

There are five types of balcony cabins on Regal Princess:

  • Balcony with Obstructed View
  • Deluxe Balcony with Obstructed View
  • Balcony
  • Deluxe Balcony
  • Premium Deluxe Balcony

Balcony cabins with obstructed views are located behind the lifeboats on Deck 8. However, if you’re clever, you can choose a cabin that’s between two lifeboats and enjoy a view that’s only slightly obstructed for a cheaper price. More on that later in this guide.

Regal Princess Balcony Cabin Grades

D4 Premium Deluxe Balcony 4 277
DA Deluxe Balcony 3 249
DB Deluxe Balcony 4 233

BE Balcony 4 222

Standard Vs. Deluxe Vs. Premium Deluxe Balcony

The main difference between Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe Balcony cabins on Regal Princess is the size. When you upgrade from Standard to Deluxe, you’ll get 5% more space. If you upgrade from Deluxe to Premium Deluxe, you’ll get a further 18% extra space.

Another difference for families to consider is the bed configuration. Three and four-berth Balcony cabins have one or two Pullman beds that come down from the ceiling. With a Deluxe or Premium Deluxe Balcony cabin, you’ll get a single sofa bed, with some also having one Pullman bed. This can be a good choice for families who don’t want to put very young children in the top bunk.

If you’re trying to decide between a Balcony room and a Deluxe balcony room on Regal Princess, here are some excellent cabin tour videos to help you choose:

There are two types of Suites on Regal Princess – Premium and Penthouse. The Penthouse Suites are the most expensive. With a Penthouse Suite, you get more space and a better location than a Premium Suite.

Premium Suites are located at the front of the ship, but they’re not forward-facing. The walls are sloping and you have a little further to walk to the elevators. If you want a Suite that accommodates four people, this is your only option as Penthouse Suites only sleep three.

Regal Princess’ Penthouse Suites are located either mid-aft on Deck 14 (S4 grade) or at the aft corners of the ship (S3 grade). The Penthouse Suites at the aft have the best views with an oversized wraparound balcony. They’re also much larger.

The Suites with the largest balconies are the Penthouse Suites on Decks 14 and 15.

Special Cabin Types

Regal Princess Aft Cabins

Aft staterooms and suites are located at the very back of the ship with the best views over the wake. They’re often larger than average and there’s little wind at the rear of the ship.

Regal Princess offers the following aft-facing rooms:

  • Premium Deluxe Balcony Rooms – Located on Decks 8 to 15
  • Penthouse Suites – Located on Decks 8 to 15

Regal Princess Connecting Rooms

If you have more than four people in your party, it’s a good idea to book two connecting rooms with a door between them. However, if you only want one cabin, you should avoid interconnecting rooms as you may have some sound or draught coming through the door.

These are the connecting room options on Regal Princess:

  • Two Interior rooms
  • Two Standard Balcony rooms
  • A Standard Balcony and a Deluxe Balcony
  • A Standard Balcony and a Mini Suite
  • Two Deluxe Balcony rooms
  • Two Premium Deluxe Balcony rooms
  • Two Mini Suites

Regal Princess Accessible Cabins

Accessible cabins are designed primarily for people who use a wheelchair or scooter. They are spacious, with extra-large doors, step-free access and a wet room. Accessible cabins usually get booked quickly, so it’s wise to book far in advance if you need this specialist accommodation.

Regal Princess cabins to avoid

Now you should be familiar with the various cabin types on Regal Princess and you may have decided which type is the best for you.

Next, we’ll take a look at which cabin numbers to steer clear of to avoid a disappointing or frustrating experience when you cruise.

1. Balconies that you can’t use while the ship is at sea

L101 to L108, M101 to M108

If your balcony faces forward, you’re only allowed to use it when the ship is in port. This is because when the ship is moving, it could get very windy out there.

If you want to make the most of your balcony and be able to relax out there on sea days, you should avoid any forward-facing rooms or suites on Regal Princess.

However, the forward-facing balconies on Regal Princess do have one distinct advantage – they’re huge, as you can see from this video…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtuNQW5uMYY

2. Metal-fronted balconies

L101 to L108, M101 to M108, E101 to E109

Some balconies have metal fronts, rather than glass. This means that you can’t see the sea when seated, you have to stand up to enjoy the view.

It’s only the balconies in the windiest spots that have metal fronts. On the Regal Princess, this is all forward-facing balconies as well as those at the front of Deck 8.

3. Beds that block the balcony doors

In some cabins, if you want to use the extra beds, they’re going to go right across the balcony doors, meaning that you would have to climb over someone to get outside.

These cabins are fine for two people, but I would definitely avoid cabins with this poor layout if you’re cruising as a family of three or four.

The photo above was taken on board P&O Cruises’ Britannia – this is a sister ship to Regal Princess, so the design is the same.

The cabins to avoid if you have three or four people are:

  • Lido Deck: L118, L119, L122, L123, L228, L229
  • Marina Deck: M130, M131, M307, M308, M309, M310, M511, M512, M620, M621
  • Riviera Deck: R107, R108, R234, R235, R238, R239, R240, R241,R511, R512, R735
  • Aloha Deck: A116, A117, A120, A121, A511, A512, A601, A602, A603, A604, A703, A704, A705, A706, A738, A739
  • Baja Deck: B5128, B129, B130, B131, B252, B253, B254, B255, B501, B502, B503, B504, B511, B512, B703, B704, B705, B706
  • Caribe Deck: C305, C306, C307, C308, C501, C502, C503, C504, C518, C519, C601, C602, C603, C604, C620, C621, C742, C743,
  • Dolphin Deck: D151, D152, D224, D225, D228, D229, D230, D231, D517, D519, D520, D522, D524, D525, D526, D531, D618, D619, D620, D621, D703, D704, D705, D706
  • Emerald Deck: E125, E130, E224, E225, E228, E229, E230, E231, E303, E304, E305, E306, E501, E502, E503, E504, E522, E523, E620, E621, E626, E627, E628, E629, E711, E712

4. Cabins with shaded balconies

All cabins on Lido Deck

If you choose a cabin on the Lido Deck, you should be aware that the deck above overhangs. While this can be good to shelter from the rain, you won’t get much sun on these balconies. If you like to sunbathe on your balcony, choose a lower deck.

5. Cabins beneath the sea walk

M409, M411, M415, M417, M419, M423, M425, M429, R409, R415, R417, R421, R423, R427, R429, R433, A409, A415, A417, A421, A423, A427, A429, A433, B409, B415, B417, B421, B423, B427, B429, B433, C409, C415, C417, C421, C423, C427, C429, C433, D407, D409, D411, D415, D417, D421, D425, D429

The Sea Walk on Regal Princess is a glass walkway that’s suspended over the side of the ship. Cabins beneath the Sea Walk are jokily known as ‘Peeping Tom cabins’ as from these balconies you may be able to see right up people’s skirts!

Sea Walk
The Sea Walk

Of course, people on the Sea Walk can see down onto the balconies too, so they don’t have a lot of privacy. This isn’t so much of an issue if you choose a cabin on a lower deck, but the higher the deck, the easier it will be for people to see right down onto your balcony.

6. Cabins with little privacy

M722, M723, M724, M725, M726, M727 (Below Horizon Terrace)

D701 to D725 (Deluxe Balcony Rooms)

At the aft of the Regal Princess is the Horizon Terrace. This is a popular place for people to stand and admire the view at the back of the ship. As Regal Princess has a tiered stern, anyone looking down from here will see right onto the balconies of the two decks below.

You can see what this looks like in this video…

This can also be an issue with the Deluxe Balcony rooms on Deck 9. Yes, they are larger. But that’s because they stick out, meaning that anyone above can see straight down onto your balcony.

overlooked balconies on Deck 9

7. Cabins that could make you seasick

L101 to L129, M101 to M129

If you’re concerned about feeling seasick you’ll want to avoid the cabins at the very front of the ship and on the highest decks. The movement of the ship will be felt most in these areas. Instead, opt for a midship cabin on a low deck.

8. Cabins that are a long walk from everything

L101 to L129, M101 to M131, R101 to R108, A101 to A129, B101 to B133, C101 to C139, D101 to D151, E101 to E130

Regal Princess is a large ship with has three banks of elevators. If anyone in your group struggles to walk far, you should choose a cabin near the midship elevators.

The cabins right at the front of the ship are the furthest from any of the lifts. Plus, lots of the attractions like the kids’ clubs, Terrace Pool, buffet, main dining rooms and Vista Lounge are at the back of the ship.

9. Noisy cabins (in the morning)

M310 to M421, M701 to M727

It’s never a good idea to book a cabin beneath the Lido Deck on a cruise ship, particularly if you’re a night owl who likes to lay in bed past seven in the morning. This is because people often drag sun loungers across the deck. Whilst this won’t sound loud to them, it certainly can be for anyone sleeping directly below.

10. Noisy cabins (in the evening)

E123, E125, E128 to E227

If you like to go to sleep before 11 pm, then you should avoid booking a cabin directly above the theatre. The shows can go on quite late on some nights, and you won’t want to be disturbed by the sound of loud music coming from beneath your room.

11. Cabins by the laundry rooms

M622, M623, R611, R612, A622, A631, B622, C622, C623, D622, D623, E622, E623

Having a cabin across the hall from the laundry room can be quite handy. It’s only open from 8 am until 8 pm so you shouldn’t be disturbed by any noise in the night, but if you like to sleep in late, you could be woken by the sound of washing machines in the morning.

The main problem with a cabin across from the laundromat is that it can be a busy area, particularly on the day before a formal night when everybody wants to iron their clothes.

If you’re cruising solo or as a couple, you should avoid booking a cabin with Pullman beds or interconnecting doors. Firstly, those cabins are often sought after by families, so leaving them free can be a kind thing to do if you have another option.

Secondly, connecting doors and extra beds can be plain annoying. You’re probably going to bump your head on the beds, even when they’re folded away. And if you have noisy neighbours then having a door between your rooms won’t offer much in the way of soundproofing.

13. Cabins with obstructed views

Obstructed view cabins are a cheaper way to have a balcony cabin. You’ll pay less because your view is blocked by a lifeboat.

Importantly, some views are much less obstructed than others. It depends if you’re right behind a lifeboat, or in the gap between two lifeboats.

If you’re considering an obstructed balcony cabin on Regal Princess, I suggest taking a look at these photos and studying the deck plan to work out which cabins have the least obstruction.

The best rooms on Regal Princess

1. The best suites

The best Suites on Regal Princess are the Penthouse Suites at the aft of the ship. You can take a closer look at one of these in this video…

2. The best balcony cabins

The design of Regal Princess means that some cabins have larger, angled balconies. You can see some of these on this snapshot from the Regal Princess deck plan…

Some of these cabins are overlooked by the Sky Walk, but if that doesn’t bother you and you just want extra space then they can be good.

If you’d like to enjoy a larger balcony for the same price, then these are the cabins with the largest balconies…

These rooms on Regal Princess offer the most space for your money:

  • Balcony Rooms: L301, L302, D424, D425, D428, D429, E424, E425

A Brand-New Culinary and Artistic Experience Aboard Sun Princess

Sun Princess has only been sailing for a couple of months but she’s debuted a brand-new restaurant – Love by Britto.

Love by Britto Sun Princess

This latest speciality restaurant aboard Sun Princess offers a unique dining experience combining art and cuisine. It’s a collaboration between artist Romero Britto and chef Rudi Sodamin, featuring a seven-course menu that is both visually stunning and delicious.

Located on Deck 17, Love by Britto provides an immersive experience with vivid colours, bold patterns, and ocean views.

Romero Britto, known for his vibrant and colourful works, has helped to create a dining space that uplifts the spirit. His artwork adorns the walls, dinnerware, and napkins, creating a cohesive and immersive experience.

And chef Rudi Sodamin, head of culinary arts for Princess Cruises, has crafted a menu that complements Britto’s artistic vision. Each dish is a masterpiece in flavour and presentation.

The seven-course dining experience begins with elegant starters like Oysters with Lemongrass Kafir, Mirin, and Gold Flakes, offering a delicate balance of flavours and luxury.

Main courses are stunning in every way, and presented in heart shapes. Standout dishes include Tuna and Avocado with Pomegranate and Togarashi, Cappuccino of Wild Mushroom Soup, and Tail of Lobster Thermidor.

The meal concludes with heart-shaped desserts like Chocolate Lava Cake with Fresh Berries and Raspberry Cream, offering a perfect balance of sweetness and richness.

Reservations for the new restaurant can be made through the Princess app, with a cover charge of $79 per person.
