4. Saga Ocean

Saga Ocean cruises have been built to cater exclusively for an audience of people aged 50 and over. In fact, 50 is the minimum age to cruise with this cruise line.

As well as this, Saga is also one of the most solo-friendly lines. Dedicated solo cabins feature on both the ships – Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure – and solo passengers can also attend social events and gatherings strictly for singles only.

As for exploring while ashore, Saga Ocean cruises also offer solo travellers the chance to buddy up on excursions which is an ideal way to meet fellow like-minded travellers.

Saga’s fares may seem high, but they include pretty much everything – including a car to pick you up from home and take you to the port.

Cunard is a great choice for those seeking a traditional cruise experience while travelling alone. Ballroom dancing, educational lectures and formal dress codes are just some of the features of a Cunard sailing that retired people most enjoy.

A keen dancer travelling alone can enjoy a waltz or two as Cunard has gentlemen hosts who will gladly take the ladies for a spin on the dancefloor in the evenings.

Cruises with Cunard can offer the chance to be entertained by shows inspired by West-End and Broadway theatre and cabaret, alongside speaker programmes which have seen the likes of Sir Michael Parkinson, former royal correspondent Jennie Bond, and politician Martin Bell.

Fellow foodies, fitness fanatics and cruisers looking to enjoy day-to-evening entertainment will enjoy the lifestyle onboard as well as the chance to let loose with activities including sunrise yoga, 90s Boyband dance classes and a ‘shake for champagne’ novelty on the ship’s app.

The cruise line might not be best for those who shy away from technology or a more modern cruise experience, as the cabin lighting and electricals are all controlled from a tablet and much of the cruise experience is centred around using the cruise line’s app.

However, if you’re young at heart and seeking an energetic, fun and lively atmosphere with no kids on board, Virgin Voyages might just be the option for you!

7. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line was the first line to offer solo cruisers their own cabin option and has won ‘Best Cruise Line for Solo Travellers’ for six years in a row by Porthole Magazine.

As well as great accommodation choices for those travelling alone, Norwegian Cruise Line offers chances for solo cruisers to socialise with others as most sailings offer singles meet-ups and bar crawls around the ship.

From 2024 there are a lot more solo cabins offered across the fleet, too.

For those looking to experience a quintessentially British cruise line, P&O Cruises is aimed at a UK audience with familiar touches to make guests feel right at home – great for those travelling alone in particular.

There are two ships in the cruise line’s fleet which are adult-only – Arcadia and Aurora. With British officers, a proper cup of tea (which you can make in your cabin!), pubs to visit and food geared to British tastes you can mingle with fellow singles just as you would at home, except while sailing.

9. Riviera Travel

Ocean cruises aren’t the only option for single cruisers over 50 either. River cruising is fast becoming a great choice for those looking to travel alone. With smaller capacities making it easier to get to know guests on board and ships which dock right into the heart of city centres, river cruises are ideal for solo travellers.

A popular cruise line for solos is Riviera Travel. The cruise line has been offering singles-only river cruises since 2018 which opens the ships up exclusively to solo travellers in all cabin categories without any additional single supplements. Perfect for splashing out on a suite if you’re feeling indulgent!

Useful things to know about cruising solo

If you’ve never cruised solo before, there might be some things you’re unsure of – so it’s worth explaining the basics as to how they work.

Firstly, you won’t be sharing a cabin with anyone if you book solo. Don’t worry about being placed in a cabin with a stranger, that doesn’t happen.

However if you book a cabin intended for two people, you’ll have to pay a single supplement – which might mean paying as much as double the per-person fare.

The cruise line knows it’s losing money by booking one person in a two-person room so you have to make up for the shortfall. That’s why it’s worth looking for single cabins which won’t have that huge supplement attached.

When it comes to dining, it will vary not just by cruise line but by who’s onboard too. You can always get a table on your own if you want, but if you don’t ask for it, you might be placed with other solo travellers in the main dining room instead. Or you might not – but you can always let the maitre d’ know your preferences.

And look out in the day’s planner to see what events and activities are planned for solo passengers. Some will be attended by the crew to help facilitate things but others might just be a venue, and these can get awkward, especially if it’s a bar. You don’t know who’s there to attend the event and who just wants a drink.

To conclude

There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a solo cruise. Whether you want to sail along the river or the ocean; enjoy luxury or experience a more freestyle lifestyle onboard – there’s bound to be one to suit you.

Keeping an eye on solo traveller deals – making the most of reduced or excluded single supplement fees is a great way to save money on your cruise fare.

What Happened To The Captain Of The Costa Concordia Cruise Ship?

The Costa Concordia tragedy – where 32 people lost their lives – is one of the worst shipping disasters in recent history. And what makes it worse is that it was completely avoidable – with one man taking more of the blame than any other.

That was the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino. But what was his role in the incident, and what happened to him as a result? Let’s find out.

The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino.
Francesco Schettino

What happened to Captain Schettino of the Costa Concordia?

Captain Francesco Schettino of the Costa Concordia was found to have been responsible for the incident where the ship ran aground. He was also found guilty of abandoning the passengers on the ship, and was jailed as a result of his crimes.

Schettino is ruined as a captain – his series of decisions were found to be directly responsible for the loss of life on the ship, and also for preserving his own safety rather than following his legal obligations to care for the ship and the passengers onboard.

He will spend many years in jail, and once released he will surely never work as the captain of a cruise ship again.

Why did he change course?

The reason Captain Schettino changed the course of the ship was to carry out a sail-by salute of the island of Giglio, where the ship sails near the coast to ‘salute’ the residents. He had successfully performed this manoeuvre previously, but on this occasion, it caused the grounding of the ship.

A sail-by salute was not part of the approved sailing route from Costa – indeed, the cruise line has confirmed that Schettino was responsible for the decision to try the manoeuvre, and denied any knowledge that he would do it.

So, why did he want to do it? It’s essentially a captain showing off. He wanted to show off ‘his’ ship to the island residents and show off to the passengers onboard as they sailed close to the island. He also knew that there was a former cruise ship captain on the island who would ‘appreciate’ the gesture.

But he deviated from the approved route for a sail-by salute – why? He later claimed he was navigating by sight, and that he knew the waters well.

He got it very wrong…

Captain Schettino was found to have deviated from the agreed route for his sail-by salute, which led to the ship running aground. He also abandoned the ship and passengers, when he had a duty to remain onboard.

The biggest mistake that Captain Schettino made was deviating from the approved course and sailing too close to the shore. It was this decision which made the ship strike a rock and begin taking in water, ultimately causing the ship to list and the loss of 32 lives onboard.

Part of the problem was that Schettino was on the ship’s bridge with Moldovan dancer Domnica Cemortan, who later confirmed she was having an affair with Schettino. This led many to speculate that the captain was distracted and was not properly carrying out his duties.

It’s worth noting at this point that the Costa Concordia captain had a wife, Fabiola Russo. He also has a child. Cemortan was his girlfriend, while his wife was at home.

Once the ship had started taking on water, Schettino made his next mistake – he refused to raise the alarm. He later claimed that he wanted to avoid causing panic.

He didn’t alert the cruise line about the incident immediately either, and he reportedly lied to the coast guard about the incident, which kept rescue boats away. He may have even ordered passengers away from muster stations. However, he did eventually raise the alarm and told guests to abandon ship.

People started to leave, but then with around 300 people left on the ship, Schettino left the ship. A captain is supposed to remain with the ship until the last person has left – this isn’t just an act of nobility but is a legal responsibility.

He refused to return to the ship despite being ordered to do so, and instead made his way to shore.

He claimed he ‘fell’ off the ship…

The reason Captain Schettino left the Costa Concordia is purely assumed to be an act of self-preservation. Schettino claims he fell off the ship when it turned over, but this is heavily disputed, especially considering his refusal to get back onto the ship.

Caption: User:paolodefalco75, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Schettino said that he would have remained with the ship if he could, but that he fell and his lifeboat was not moving. He was found dry when he got to the shore, which suggests he was likely lying – if he had fallen directly into a lifeboat then he would surely have been injured.

It’s pretty clear that Schettino cared more about his own safety than that of his passengers and crew. He had the opportunity to do the right thing and return to the ship, but he didn’t. His priority was getting himself to shore – no matter what it meant for those left on the ship.

To be clear on how serious this was, it’s worth reviewing the timeline. Schettino left the ship at 11.30pm, and by 1am there were still 100 passengers on the ship. By 3am – over three hours after he’d left, and with ample time for him to return, there were still between 40 and 50 people on the ship.

Of those, 32 people died. It may have been that Schettino couldn’t have saved those lives by being on the ship, but he had a responsibility to help the survivors to escape safely at least.

He refused to get back on board

Schettino refused to board the ship again after abandoning it. He was ordered to return to the ship by the coast guard, and offered the means to do so, but he declined. He later claimed that he would’ve returned if he could.

According to Schettino’s own version of events, he fell from the cruise ship and then couldn’t return to it due to his lifeboat being stationary and it being too dark. He got into contact with Gregorio de Falco, the on-duty commander of the Italian coast guard, to report that he was no longer on the ship.

Recordings of conversations between de Falco and Schettino show that de Falco accused Schettino of abandoning his passengers, and even included the line “Vada a bordo, cazzo”, which literally translates as “F**k, get on board!”.

In the end, Schettino was one of the first from the ship to reach land. He claimed that he would’ve gone back to the ship if a helicopter was available. He was offered a dinghy by a police officer from the island, but declined the offer. It was this police officer, Carlo Galli, who later testified that Schettino was dry when he was found.

As a result of his refusal to get back on the ship, and the decision to abandon the ship in the first place, Schettino was pilloried in the media. He gained the nicknames “Captain Coward” and “Captain Calamity” and was even referred to as “Italy’s most hated man” in the tabloids.

Was he drunk?

There was a lot of speculation that Captain Schettino was drunk when the Costa Concordia ran aground, and some passengers claimed to have seen him drinking wine and doing drugs regularly. However, he tested negative for drugs or alcohol on the night of the incident.

Whether or not Schettino was a regular drinker or someone who took cocaine, as some people claimed in the aftermath of the Concordia incident, we don’t know. All we know is that he was not under the influence of either during the events of the Costa Concordia disaster.

Don’t worry – he was found guilty

Francesco Schettino was found guilty of manslaughter, causing the shipwreck, and abandoning his passengers. His trial lasted 19 months and he subsequently appealed twice, unsuccessfully.

Guilty or not guilty?

Before we get into the details of the trial, it’s worth covering the period between the incident and court proceedings. Schettino was placed in temporary custody following the sinking, and then released to house arrest. In July that year, he was released from house arrest but told to remain in Meta di Sorrento.

The cruise line put the blame for the incident onto Schettino, and fired him in 2012, refusing to pay his legal fees. His trial began later, with his first appearance in court being in December 2014.

He was charged with manslaughter of the 32 people who lost their lives on the ship. He was also charged with causing a maritime accident, of abandoning the ship while people remained onboard, and for failing to cooperate with rescue services. He was found guilty of the first three charges.

Sentencing

When Captain Schettino was found guilty in his trial related to the Costa Concordia disaster, he was sentenced to spend sixteen years in jail, as well as a further five-year banning order from navigation on any ship.

The jail sentence was broken down by the following:

  • 10 years for manslaughter of the passengers and crew who died
  • 5 years for causing the shipwreck in the first place
  • 1 year for abandoning his passengers

Many people criticised the sentence, claiming it was too lenient. There was anger that Schettino was only going to be sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of 32 people.

Originally the prosecution had been pushing for a much longer sentence – they wanted a total sentence of 26 years and 3 months, broken down as:

  • 14 years for multiple manslaughters
  • 9 years for causing the shipwreck
  • 3 years for abandoning the shipwreck
  • 3 months for failing to contact the authorities as soon as the incident happened

Other crew members were sentenced for their part in the tragedy too, but their sentences were all given as part of a plea bargain, and were much lesser than Schettino’s. They were all jailed for between 12 and 34 months for various crimes including manslaughter, the chaotic evacuation, and other mistakes during the timeline of events.

He did actually go to jail, too

Captain Schettino did go to jail for his part in the disaster. He originally appealed against his jail sentence twice, but failed both times. After the second failure, he reported to the Rebibbia prison in Rome to begin his stint in jail.

Guy in jail

It took Schettino some time to finally begin his sentence. His original court case ended in February 2015, but he lodged his appeal soon after. The Italian appeals court eventually upheld the original sentence decision in May 2016, but Schettino didn’t give up.

He took his appeal to Italy’s Supreme Court of Cassation, and a year later, on 12th May 2017, his sentence was again upheld. Five years after the original disaster, Schettino finally reported to prison to begin his sentence.

He’s still in jail (for now)

Francesco Schettino is still in jail – his sentence was for 16 years and he began in 2017, when he was 57 years old. If he sees out his full sentence, he will be released from prison in 2033, when he is 73 years old.

There’s a chance he could be released early, but it’s expected he will at least serve the majority of his sentence. Some people have called the punishment harsh, claiming that he has been made a scapegoat, but the cruise line has claimed that the sentence is balanced.

Final word

If Captain Francesco Schettino hadn’t taken the risky move to carry out the sail-by salute (navigating by his own eyes), then the Costa Concordia wouldn’t have hit the rock, and the 32 people who lost their lives would still be with us.

He is rightly in prison for his crimes – and cruise ship captains will no doubt have seen the consequences for his negligible behaviour. If they didn’t already know how important it was to make safe decisions with routes and to stay with the ship until everyone is accounted for, then they certainly do now.

The captain was not the only one at fault, and Costa Cruises has learned lessons on how to make it easier to deploy lifeboats when a ship is listing – lessons which other cruise lines have learned from as well.

Cruises are very safe methods of travel, and no captain would take the same risks as Schettino did after seeing how the Concordia disaster unfolded.

Want To Cruise Around The World? Here’s How Much A World Cruise Really Costs

World cruises are often seen as the pinnacle of cruising itineraries. While few actually circumvent the entire globe, they are spectacular lengthy cruises that incorporate at least two continents and give you the chance to explore the world in style.

Fred. Olsen Borealis
Me at the start of a cheap world cruise on Borealis

But understandably, world cruises are not cheap. So how much are they exactly, and what kind of options are you looking at if you want to choose a long-term cruise as a dream holiday? Let’s find out.

How much a world cruise REALLY costs

World cruises start from around $10,000 per person and can cost as much as $839,999 per person if you choose the best suite on the most luxurious cruise line. Expect to pay around $15,000 to $25,000 on a mainstream cruise line, and between $60,000 and $100,000 on a luxury cruise line, on average.

Factors affecting the price of a world cruise

Every world cruise is different so the price really depends on a lot of things. When asking how much does a round-the-world cruise cost, you need to look at various factors:

1. Duration

World cruises are not a standard length, and unsurprisingly, a 6-month cruise around the world is going to cost more than a 4-month world cruise. That’s an extra 60 or so days of your room, food, entertainment and so on.

Typically the shortest round-the-world itineraries are around 100 nights or so, and most world cruises are 4-month itineraries lasting around 130 nights. Six-month-long world cruises are a little rarer, although Oceania Cruises usually has a 180-night itinerary to enjoy.

There are some longer world cruises, such as Royal Caribbean’s incredible 274-night sailing which set sail in 2023 – that’s nine months long.

World Cruise Map

Supposed to set sail in November 2023 was the first ever three-year-long world cruise. The new cruise line Life At Sea Cruises originally offered this itinerary on their ship MV Gemini, with a starting price of around $90,000 per person.

However, it was cancelled last minute when the cruise line couldn’t secure a replacement ship, after MV Gemini was deemed not to be seaworthy for the itinerary.

Life-At-Sea-Cruises
MV Gemini

Many would say that if you spend more than a year on a ship, you’re pretty much living there. That is an option, too. Check out my guide to living on a cruise ship permanently to see how much that costs.

What length of world cruise is best?

If you have the time for a longer cruise then go for it – it won’t just be filled with sea days, but you’ll instead see more ports. But of course, the cost will be higher, so budget is as much a concern as your time.

An alternative option is to look at segments – most cruise lines will break their itineraries up into segments, so you can book say a 30-night or 40-night sailing on the ship as part of the world cruise. These are good compromises if you don’t have the time or money for the full itinerary.

2. Cruise Line

As it is with any cruise, the choice of cruise line will impact how much your world cruise sets you back. Cruising on a mainstream cruise line like MSC or Princess Cruises is always going to be less expensive than choosing a luxury cruise operator like Seabourn or Silversea.

Seabourn cruise ship

You need to consider what type of cruise you enjoy though, and what you want from your ship. Luxury cruise lines may have less to do during the day, but a higher standard of service. The entertainment, the choice of restaurants and bars, and the facilities, are even more important on a world cruise than a regular cruise because you’re on the ship for so long.

Don’t settle for a cruise line that doesn’t fit your vacation style, since you might end up not enjoying the experience. And a six-month cruise that you don’t enjoy is a long one.

2. Stateroom Type

Again, just like booking any cruise, the choice of stateroom will determine how much you have to pay. World cruises are always advertised with a “from” price for the most basic staterooms on the ship, usually inside cabins.

On a 7-night or 14-night cruise, an inside cabin is fine for most people. You can easily wander up to the deck to enjoy the view when you want to. But on a longer itinerary, having a window or a balcony may be a higher priority for you.

Here’s the room I stayed in when I joined the world cruise on Borealis. Paying several thousands of pounds more for a window is a lot, but many would say it’s worth it.

Ocean View Room on Borealis

And then, of course, there’s the even better option of a suite if you have the funds available. The suite perks may be even more valuable over a longer itinerary.

As a guide, here’s a look at one of the cheapest, one of the longest and one of the most expensive world cruises, with a guide to the different prices depending on stateroom choice:

3. Inclusions

One of the biggest differences, when you work out the total cost of your world cruise, will depend on what’s included as standard with the upfront fare.

There are a lot of additional costs you might rack up during a long world cruise itinerary, including:

  • WiFi internet access
  • Drinks
  • Tips
  • Speciality dining
  • Shore excursions
  • Laundry

That last one is often overlooked because on a normal cruise you might never need the laundry service – but good luck packing 274 different outfits for your Royal Caribbean cruise!

Many cruise lines will include more of these as standard in their world cruise fares. What you’d normally pay for separately will be incorporated into the fare. For example, Royal Caribbean includes WiFi, drinks, tips and laundry in the Ultimate World Cruise fare, and normally you’d pay extra.

Royal Caribbean drinks

So bear that in mind when you compare world cruises – because you need to budget for the whole thing, including any extra you’ll have to spend while on the ship.

4. Travelling solo

World cruise prices – and most cruises in general – will always be advertised with a price that is “per person, based on two sharing”.

So if you’re intending to cruise solo, bear in mind that your cruise will cost more – sometimes as much as taking a second person along anyway!

It varies and with an itinerary as long as a world cruise you will often find special solo rates. They won’t be quite as cheap as the regular per-person rate but they should be better than paying the full price of two passengers.

The best world cruise depends on you

Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise, if they repeat it, is a good option for families with pre-school or homeschooled kids and younger travellers.

A lot of people who go on world cruises tend to be in retirement age though, so may be looking for either something more luxurious – like a Regent Seven Seas or a Silversea cruise – as that special dream holiday they’ve worked for all their lives.

However, you might find it tricky to get a place onboard one of Regent Seven Seas’ world cruises. Each year, they sell out before they even open for bookings! So the only way to get a place is to be a loyal past customer, or join the waitlist and hope that someone cancels.

Seven Seas Mariner
Regent Seven Seas Mariner

And for those who don’t have the budget for a luxury option, the ‘best’ world cruise might be the one that’s most affordable, and that’s the cruise offered by Ambassador Cruise Lines.

Ambassador Ambience
Ambassador Ambience

There isn’t just one type of cruise passenger, and so there isn’t one single type of world cruise that best fits everyone. “Best” is very subjective.

World Cruises: cheapest to most expensive

Here’s a look at all the world cruises you either can currently book, or that have been on sale in the last couple of years, ranked from cheapest to most expensive based on the per-night cost. Obviously, the different cruises range in length, so a per-night cost is the fairest way of ranking them.

The prices are for the cheapest available stateroom and will be higher if you want to upgrade.

Cruise Line Nights Price Per Night

To Conclude

World cruises are definitely worth the cost if you have the money available. It is the easiest way to see the world, since your ship takes you to all sorts of interesting and exotic destinations, and you don’t have the hassle of constantly packing and flying between each country.

If you want to get the best price on your world cruise, you’ll want to book early – they are very popular itineraries and often go on sale as much as 3 years in advance.

Book the cheapest stateroom category you’re comfortable with, and try to take advantage of whatever free drinks there are on board if drinks aren’t included. Otherwise, over 3-6 months, you could rack up quite the bill!

And don’t forget to choose an itinerary that covers everywhere you want to visit. It’s worth looking at the top 10 ports in the world (according to the experts) if you need inspiration.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Cruises Due to Dry Dock Schedule, Compensation Packages Offered

Royal Caribbean International has cancelled several cruises due to adjustments in the dry dock schedule for Brilliance of the Seas.

Brilliance of the Seas

The affected cruises include the transatlantic sailing departing Miami, Florida on 12 April 2025, a 5-night Western Caribbean itinerary from New Orleans scheduled to return on 10 April 2025, and sailings departing on 13 May and 21 May 2025.

The cancellations are due to the need for routine maintenance on the 22-year-old vessel, although Royal Caribbean has said that she will also receive some exciting improvements too.

This is interesting, as the Radiance Class wasn’t included in the cruise line’s original Amplification Schedule before the global shutdown in 2020.

Some cruise experts wondered if the Radiance Class would be allowed to sail under they were unsuitable and then sold on, with the cruise line focussing more on the bigger and newer ships in the fleet.

But the Radiance Class clearly still has life in it for Royal Caribbean – though similar questions still hang over the older and smaller Vision Class.

Royal Caribbean has spoken to guests to offer a selection of alternative cruises if theirs has been cancelled, along with additional compensation in the form of onboard credit or Future Cruise Credit if the alternatives aren’t suitable.

The cruise line hasn’t revealed the specific compensation being offered, as it has stated that amounts vary due to the different types of cruise being cancelled.

Amsterdam Makes Bold Move To Slash Cruise Ship Visits And Relocate Terminal

Amsterdam is set to drastically cut down on cruise ship visits and relocate its cruise terminal by 2026.

Amsterdam at night

The city will limit visits to no more than 100 per year and require ships to use shore power by 2027. The terminal may be moved to the Coenhaven area to reduce congestion and pollution.

The decision is driven by environmental concerns. Amsterdam aims to minimise pollutants and promote sustainability. Cruise ships contribute to air and water pollution, and the city hopes to reduce its carbon footprint by cutting down on visits.

Currently, the Passengers Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) receives about 190 cruise ship visits annually. This brings economic benefits but also leads to congestion and pollution. Starting in 2026, only one berth will be used at a time to reduce congestion. By 2027, ships will be required to use shore power.

Amsterdam’s canals are vulnerable to pollution from cruise ships and the city hopes to protect its canals and maintain their pristine condition.

The economic impact will be significant. Cruise tourism contributes approximately 105 million Euros annually to Amsterdam’s economy. With fewer ships, there will be a loss in tourist taxes, passenger spending, and payments from cruise lines.

The Passengers Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) is currently located in the heart of the city. Its central location contributes to congestion and pollution. The Coenhaven area, northwest of the current location, is being considered for the new terminal. Financial and legal feasibility studies must be completed before the relocation can proceed.

Other cities around the world, including Sitka in Alaska, Bar Harbor in Maine, and Valencia in Spain, are also considering similar measures. These cities are exploring ways to balance economic benefits with sustainability.

Amsterdam’s decision to reduce cruise ship visits and relocate its terminal is a bold move but one that the local government clearly think is necessary.

Disney Cruise Line Creating Ultimate Vacation Destination Onboard The Disney Adventure

Sailing from Singapore in 2025, the one-of-a-kind Disney Adventure will offer families throughout the region the ultimate vacation at sea. The first Disney Cruise Line ship to homeport in Asia will be a destination itself, sailing on three- and four-night voyages designed with magical days at sea and filled with immersive storytelling and captivating entertainment like only Disney can do.

Sailing from Singapore in 2025

“We’re bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line. “When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before – and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they’ll cherish forever.”

New Areas to Discover Aboard the Disney Adventure

The Disney Adventure will be both a journey and a destination, a voyage of limitless possibilities that brings to vibrant life the core pillars of Disney storytelling. Through the magic of imagination, discovery, fantasy and — of course — adventure, guests will embark on voyages to seven uniquely themed areas, each teeming with dozens of incredible characters and unforgettable experiences, without ever leaving the ship.

The power of imagination, which opens doors to new adventures and emboldens dreamers to create magic of their own, will captivate guests from the moment they enter Disney Imagination Garden.

  • Disney Imagination Garden will be the emotional heart of the Disney Adventure, an enchanted valley, charming garden and open-air performance venue all in one. Inspired by 100 years of heroic and heartwarming Disney adventures — from Moana on the high seas to Mowgli in the jungle — this imaginative gathering space will be guests’ gateway to an unforgettable journey all their own.

The spirit of discovery will inspire guests to chase the horizon, to see how far they can go, and to encounter surprising worlds beyond their own in the dynamic realms of Disney Discovery Reef, San Fransokyo Street and Wayfinder Bay.

  • At Disney Discovery Reef, families will shop and dine in an ethereal and ever-changing retreat evoking favorite aquatic characters and nautical stories from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, including “The Little Mermaid,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Finding Nemo” and “Luca.”
  • Inspired by the eclectic world of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Big Hero 6,” San Fransokyo Street will be a family entertainment area pulsing with the energy and atmosphere of a vibrant street market and boasting an assortment of interactive games and activities, shops, cinemas and more.
  • At Wayfinder Bay, guests will be called by “the line where the sky meets the sea” to an open-air oasis under the sun, where relaxation and exclusive entertainment await. The sophisticated yet casual poolside retreat will reflect the Pacific Islands-inspired artistry of Disney Animation’s “Moana,” offering some of the most stunning views of the sea and sky aboard the Disney Adventure.

The magic of fantasy draws on hopes, dreams and wishes to create whimsical new worlds from many of Disney’s most beloved and timeless stories, with fairytales made real in the enchanting and expansive Town Square.

  • Town Square will be a celebration of Disney royals — a magical land dedicated to those who wish upon a star hoping their dreams will come true. This fantastical forest filled with shops, lounges, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues will exude the enchanting feeling of summer in full bloom with nods to “Tangled,” “Cinderella,” “Frozen,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “The Princess and the Frog,” and more.

The heart of every Disney adventure is the irresistible thrill and joyful delight of boldly embarking on new and exciting experiences, a feeling guests will dare to discover within Marvel Landing and Toy Story Place.

  • At Marvel Landing, heroes will unite in a destination for fans of all ages. As a celebration of Marvel’s larger-than-life personalities, this area will offer Avengers-level adventure, with all-new attractions and experiences that showcase imaginative representations of guests’ favorite Super Heroes.
  • Toy Story Place will inspire guests to explore, create, connect and have fun in a whimsical, interactive play land with themed food venues and water play areas, where the world of Pixar’s “Toy Story” movies and shorts springs to life in surprising and inventive ways.

Where Magic Meets the Sea

The Disney Adventure will offer guests a Disney Cruise Line vacation on a grand scale, including the hallmarks of every Disney cruise – fun and relaxation for everyone onboard, incredible dining, world-class entertainment and exceptional guest service.

Every sailing will include an endless array of indoor and outdoor fun, with exciting attractions, interactive play areas, fun in the sun and special entertainment, plus so much more for families to enjoy together. Young cruisers will have the time of their lives with dedicated spaces and clubs for kids, tweens and teens, while adults relax and unwind with premium dining, lounge and spa experiences.

A highlight of every Disney cruise vacation is the world-class entertainment that brings the ship to life. Throughout the Disney Adventure, guests will enjoy unforgettable character encounters, dazzling stage shows brimming with Disney songs and characters, signature events, first-run films, karaoke and game shows.

Guests aboard the Disney Adventure will also enjoy the exceptional dining and impeccable service that Disney Cruise Line is known for. Guests will indulge in a collection of imaginative restaurants where dinner is more than a meal — it’s a chance to feast on favorite Disney stories through immersive theming and distinctly Disney entertainment. Guests will be accompanied by the same dedicated service team throughout the voyage, adding a level of familiarity and attention to their dining experience.

When it’s time to rest, guests will retreat to well-appointed staterooms complete with special Disney touches and family-friendly conveniences, such as Disney Cruise Line’s signature split-bath concept, which allows two people to get ready at once. The Disney Adventure will also feature extensive concierge accommodations, providing ultimate luxury and a heightened level of personalized service and convenience, including access to exclusive areas and amenities such as a private indoor lounge, an expansive sundeck with a pool and whirlpools, high-end shopping venues, and dedicated spa and fitness facilities.

A New Adventure on the Horizon

Beginning in 2025, the Disney Adventure will sail three- and four-night cruises from the Marina Bay Cruise Centre for at least five years as part of a collaboration between Disney Cruise Line and Singapore Tourism Board. Singapore’s strategic location, world-class air connectivity and port infrastructure make it a thriving cruise hub in Southeast Asia, a diverse region that is home to over 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Disney Cruise Line estimates the passenger capacity of the 208,000-gross-ton Disney Adventure to be approximately 6,700 with around 2,500 crew members.

More details about the maiden voyage and onboard experiences will be announced at a later date.

Alaska Cruise Comparison: Luxury, Expedition, Big Ship

I’ve always said that the best way to experience Alaska is on a cruise. “The Last Frontier” is surrounded by amazing waterways that define the way of life for its residents. These waters have always been vital as the region carved out its identity from pioneering and mining beginnings to its modern place as a hub of commercial fishing and tourism.

Alaska Cruise Comparison: Our Guide

So, let’s get this out of the way right up front: Any cruise to Alaska is going to be a special experience. So, there is no right way to cruise in Alaska – you’ll just have to choose which type of voyage is right for you.

I have been to Alaska three times, each on a different style of cruise ship.

I’ve explored little-visited spots through the intimacy and ruggedness of an expedition cruise with UnCruise Adventures.

I also sailed to Alaska’s historic frontier towns and cities with a couple thousand others on the larger Golden Princess cruise ship, which carries more than 2,500 passengers.

And, I was supremely spoiled when I was among the 700 passengers cruising in comfort on the luxury ship Regent Seven Seas Mariner.

Alaska Cruise Styles – Three Different Types Compared

So, what cruise style would you prefer?

I’ll tell you this: I enjoyed them all, because they each feature distinctive aspects of exploration and adventure that you’ll only find on that particular type of voyage.

Here is what you can expect . . .

Alaska On a Big Cruise Ship

Take a mass-market cruise ship to Alaska if you appreciate the wide variety of onboard activities that accompany an interesting enrichment program. While sailing in Southeast Alaska, the large ships such as Golden Princess offer a lot of outdoor deck space ideal for passengers to gather to observe wildlife during times of scenic cruising in fjords, channels and passages.

Princess Cruises

The ships also feature a naturalist who gives talks (heard over the loudspeaker) while you sail in special places like Glacier Bay National Park or Tracy Arm Fjord. If the weather is chilly, you have the option to watch from inside. The large public spaces on the big ships allow you to view through windows and often within a few steps of getting a nice cocktail or some food to savor as you gaze out the windows while sailing past bobbing icebergs or in the midst of glaciers.

Excursion programs

Excursion programs are varied and include things like helicopter rides, dogsledding and fishing experiences or bear-watching outings. You’ll visit mining towns and historic cities like Skagway, Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau.

However, these ports can get fairly crowded when the entire ship (or multiple ships) empties onto the streets of these tiny villages.

The benefit of the large-ship experience in Alaska is that you can enjoy your time cruising or in interesting ports while still having access to amenities like a gym, great restaurants, spa services and nightly included entertainment.

Alaska On a Luxury Cruise

Regent Seven Seas Mariner Observation Lounge Regent Seven Seas Mariner Observation Lounge
The Observation Lounge on Regent Seven Seas Mariner lets you view the incredible scenery in Alaska in comfort.

You get to head out into the wilds of Alaska in style. My cruise on Regent Seven Seas Mariner was delightful because the ship carries just several hundred passengers — so you get to enjoy this great destination with a certain intimacy and level of comfort not available on other ships.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Mariner also features a large Observation Lounge where travelers gather to hear enrichment talks on the region, enjoy cocktails and live music while sailing in some of the prettiest places on earth in Southeast Alaska. Drinks, excursions, gratuities and even airfare and transfers are included in your fare.

On these types of cruises in Alaska, you’re going to get more gourmet food options and better service, as well as more space onboard and in your cabin. Every stateroom on our ship had a balcony, too, which is a must when cruising in Alaska. I opened the door to my veranda one morning just in time to see a humpback emerge, blow water from its spout, then slide back below the surface.

Luxury Cruise Benefits

You also will have entertainment, pools, hot tubs, fitness centers and spa services.

The best benefit of a luxury cruise in Alaska is the highly curated shore excursions that feature smaller group sizes, plus the great food and service. It’s a high-end, hassle-free trip because you get nearly everything included in your fare upfront.

Alaska On an Expedition

UnCruise Adventures Wilderness Explorer in AlaskaUnCruise Adventures Wilderness Explorer in Alaska
UnCruise Adventures’ Wilderness Explorer features a deck at the bow to get outside to spot whales — and rainbows — in Alaska.

Any type of cruise in Alaska offers a feast for your eyes.

It’s a truly stunning place, filled with beautiful things to see.

An expedition cruise in Alaska, however, feeds your soul.

UnCruise Adventures

I sailed with UnCruise Adventures on its Wilderness Explorer ship on an itinerary that — true to the line’s name – was full of adventure. The ship carries a maximum of 84 passengers, and there were about half that many during my voyage in early spring.

Expedition ships are not fancy. The trips are more about what you can see and do off the ship. These cruises are ideal for travelers who want to get out into nature for active (even challenging) days.

Cruise CompeteCruise Compete

They also appeal to nature-lovers, photography buffs and people who love to learn more about their destinations by interacting with expert guides and naturalists who provide daily enrichment talks and activities.

Expedition Cruise Benefits

I really enjoyed my time on UnCruise Adventures because a strong bond was quickly formed among our group of a few dozen like-minded travelers who didn’t mind the somewhat austere nature of the ship and stateroom accommodations. Instead, we formed camaraderie over tasty locally sourced meals, as well as daily excursions like hiking, snorkeling, kayaking and skiff tours.

On an expedition, you will sail to smaller islands and bays where you might be the only people. We went on 10-plus-mile hikes on rugged trails to see rivers, waterfalls, bogs, valleys and natural hot springs. Imagine sitting in a natural hot springs bath while looking up at snow-capped peaks.

Smaller Ship Advantages

The smaller ships get you closer to glaciers. The captain can also adjust the daily sailing schedule to move the ship to areas where creatures are spotted. Our Wilderness Explorer ship often would linger amid a pod of breeching whales, and we also had orcas and Dall’s porpoises follow along just feet from the sides and bow of the ship. It was a jaw-dropping experience to be that close to these animals. (Bald eagles were a daily sighting.)

We also kayaked about five miles against the winds and current into Misty Fjords National Monument. It was among the most grueling – yet satisfying – excursions I’ve ever enjoyed.

So, while the ship has limited amenities – a hot tub, bar, lounge and tiny cabins – this type of cruise is memorable for so many other reasons.

So, what kind of Alaska cruise is right for you? Hey, you might want to try them all just so you’ll know for sure.
