Carnival’s Celebration Key Welcomes 2.4 Million Guests In First Year

Carnival Cruise Line has marked the first anniversary of Celebration Key on 19th July 2026, revealing that the private Bahamas destination welcomed 2.4 million guests during its inaugural year of operation.

The milestone was celebrated with special performances and activities for guests visiting from Carnival Conquest and Carnival Freedom.

Celebration Key Opening Day Carnival

The impressive guest tally demonstrates the destination’s rapid rise as one of the most popular private islands in the cruise industry. Celebration Key reached its one-millionth visitor after just five months of operation in December 2025, establishing a remarkable pace that continued throughout the year.

Located on Grand Bahama, the destination has maintained consistent popularity across all seasons since its opening. The steady stream of visitors reflects Carnival’s strategic positioning of the port on numerous itineraries across its fleet, making it a regular feature for guests sailing Caribbean routes.

The 2.4 million guest figure represents an average of approximately 6,500 visitors per day when accounting for operational days throughout the year. This level of traffic places Celebration Key amongst the busiest cruise destinations in the region, competing with established private islands operated by other major cruise lines.

Anniversary Celebrations Feature Traditional Bahamian Culture

The one-year milestone was marked with extensive festivities for guests visiting aboard Carnival Conquest and Carnival Freedom, ships with a combined guest capacity of 5,960 passengers. The celebration centred on showcasing authentic Bahamian culture and creating memorable experiences.

Celebration Key

A specially arranged Junkanoo performance served as the highlight of the anniversary activities. This traditional Bahamian street parade and musical festival brought vibrant colours, rhythmic music, and energetic dancing to the destination, offering guests an authentic taste of local culture.

Beyond the Junkanoo festivities, Carnival organised interactive scavenger hunts throughout the destination, encouraging guests to explore the various areas and amenities. A giant birthday cake displayed at the destination’s entrance served as a focal point for photo opportunities and celebration.

Impressive Statistics Showcase Guest Activity And Preferences

Throughout its first year of operation, Celebration Key has accumulated remarkable usage statistics that paint a picture of guest behaviour and preferences. The destination sent more than 500,000 guests down its waterslides, highlighting the popularity of aquatic attractions amongst cruise passengers.

The food and beverage operations proved equally successful, with Mini Donut King serving over 400,000 sweet treats to hungry guests throughout the year. The destination’s bars poured over 100,000 piña coladas, cementing the tropical cocktail’s status as the beverage of choice for visitors seeking the quintessential Caribbean experience.

These figures demonstrate not only the volume of guests but also their engagement with the destination’s amenities. Rather than simply arriving and departing, visitors are actively participating in activities and utilising the food and beverage offerings throughout their visit.

Industry-Leading Accessibility Certification Sets New Standard

Celebration Key achieved a significant milestone in accessibility by becoming the first cruise destination to earn Sensory Inclusive Certification through KultureCity. This recognition represents a major advancement in making cruise destinations more welcoming to individuals with invisible disabilities.

Carnival Celebration Key

The certification builds upon Carnival Cruise Line’s long-standing partnership with KultureCity, a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness and improving sensory accessibility. The collaboration has resulted in comprehensive accommodations throughout the destination designed to support guests with autism, PTSD, dementia, and other sensory processing challenges.

Sensory-friendly features at Celebration Key include quiet spaces, sensory bags with noise-cancelling headphones and fidget tools, and specially trained staff members who understand the needs of guests with sensory sensitivities. This initiative aligns with growing industry awareness of the importance of inclusive travel experiences.

The certification process involved extensive evaluation of the destination’s facilities, staff training programmes, and available accommodations. By achieving this recognition, Celebration Key has set a new benchmark that other cruise destinations may follow in future development projects.

Substantial Economic Impact Benefits Grand Bahama Community

The opening and operation of Celebration Key has generated significant economic benefits for Grand Bahama and its residents. Approximately 1,000 year-round local jobs are directly supported by the private destination, providing stable employment opportunities in a region that has faced economic challenges in recent years.

Carnival’s commitment to local partnership extends beyond employment figures. More than 80 per cent of Celebration Key’s retail and food operators are locally owned Bahamian businesses, ensuring that revenue generated by the destination circulates within the local economy rather than flowing exclusively to international corporations.

This approach to local business integration represents a departure from traditional cruise destination development models, where cruise lines often maintain complete operational control. By partnering with local entrepreneurs and established businesses, Carnival has created a more sustainable economic model that benefits the broader community.

The employment and business opportunities have provided particular relief to Grand Bahama, which has worked to rebuild its economy following significant hurricane damage in recent years. The steady flow of cruise passengers provides consistent revenue streams for local vendors and service providers.

Food Waste Reduction Programme Expands With Anniversary

Celebration Key’s Less Left Over programme represents an innovative approach to reducing food waste whilst supporting local communities. The initiative collects surplus food and unserved meals from the destination’s various dining venues, donating these items to local organisations serving Grand Bahama residents.

The anniversary celebration coincided with an expansion of the programme, with Carnival Freedom and Carnival Conquest making the initiative’s first donations to the region. This extension brings shipboard food waste reduction into the equation, potentially multiplying the programme’s impact.

Food waste represents a significant challenge across the cruise industry, with ships and destinations producing substantial quantities of surplus food daily. By implementing systematic donation programmes, Carnival addresses both environmental concerns and food insecurity issues in port communities.

The programme requires careful coordination between food service operations, health and safety protocols, and local charitable organisations. Successfully executed food donation schemes must maintain food safety standards whilst ensuring timely delivery to recipients who can utilise the donations.

Capacity Expansion Demonstrates Commitment To Growth

Carnival has already implemented significant infrastructure improvements since Celebration Key’s opening, demonstrating responsiveness to guest feedback and operational demands. The most substantial enhancement came in June 2026 with the opening of a new pier extension that doubled the destination’s ship capacity.

The expanded pier infrastructure allows Celebration Key to accommodate two ships simultaneously, significantly increasing daily guest volumes and operational flexibility. This enhancement enables Carnival to feature the destination on more itineraries and reduce scheduling conflicts during peak season.

The pier expansion represents a substantial capital investment in the destination’s future, signalling Carnival’s confidence in Celebration Key’s long-term viability. Such infrastructure projects typically require extensive planning, environmental assessments, and construction timelines extending over many months.

President Christine Duffy indicated that additional improvements and expansions are planned for the destination’s future, though specific details were not disclosed. “As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue building on this momentum, creating new experiences for our guests and deepening our commitment to Grand Bahama and its people,” Duffy stated.

Strong First Year Performance Positions Destination For Continued Success

The first-year performance metrics position Celebration Key as a significant success in Carnival’s portfolio of destinations. “Our goal is to create unforgettable memories for our guests, and in its first year, the destination has done exactly that for more than 2 million people,” said Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line.

“We’re proud to be part of those moments whilst also creating real, lasting impact in the local community.”

The 2.4 million guest figure represents validation of Carnival’s significant investment in developing a private destination designed specifically for its brand identity and guest demographics. Private islands and destinations have become increasingly important competitive differentiators in the cruise industry, with major lines investing hundreds of millions in exclusive port facilities.

Celebration Key joins a growing list of cruise line private destinations throughout the Caribbean, including Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay, Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay, and Disney’s Castaway Cay. These exclusive ports allow cruise lines to control the guest experience, capture additional revenue, and offer amenities impossible at traditional ports.

The destination’s strong performance in its inaugural year suggests that Carnival has successfully created a product that resonates with its guest base. The combination of beach access, water activities, dining options, and cultural experiences appears to have struck the right balance for families and couples seeking relaxation and entertainment.

Looking forward, Carnival’s commitment to continued investment and improvement suggests that Celebration Key will evolve based on guest preferences and operational insights gained during the first year. The willingness to expand infrastructure and programming demonstrates a long-term strategic vision for the destination rather than a static development approach.

8 Cooler Summer Cruise Destinations When Heatwaves Strike

For many people, a Mediterranean cruise is the ultimate summer holiday. Wandering through colourful Greek villages, sipping coffee in an Italian piazza or exploring centuries-old streets in Spain has plenty of appeal, and it’s easy to see why the region remains one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations year after year.

Heatwave cruising

However, recent summers have brought another feature that’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore – extreme heat. Temperatures above 40°C have become more common across parts of Spain, Italy and Greece, and while that doesn’t mean Mediterranean cruises should be avoided altogether, it can make sightseeing a lot more demanding than many travellers expect.

The good news is that the cruise world is full of alternatives. If the thought of climbing steep streets in blazing sunshine doesn’t sound particularly relaxing, there are plenty of destinations where summer temperatures are much kinder. And for anyone who has already booked a Mediterranean cruise, there are plenty of simple ways to stay comfortable without missing out on the experience.

Why Summer Heat Can Be A Challenge On Mediterranean Cruises

The ship itself is rarely the problem. Modern cruise ships are well equipped for hot weather, with air-conditioned lounges, shaded outdoor spaces and swimming pools providing plenty of opportunities to cool down between ports.

It’s when passengers step ashore that the weather can become much more noticeable.

sunset hot tub

Many of the Mediterranean’s most famous ports were built centuries before anyone worried about staying cool. Historic centres often have narrow streets, limited shade and plenty of uphill walks. Places such as Santorini, Dubrovnik and parts of Rome can involve climbing hills, standing in queues or walking across exposed archaeological sites during the hottest part of the day.

For some travellers that’s all part of the adventure, but for others it can quickly become exhausting. Families with young children, older passengers and anyone with certain medical conditions may find that a day of sightseeing feels much harder when temperatures climb into the high 30s or beyond.

That certainly doesn’t mean Mediterranean cruises are no longer worth booking. Millions of people continue to enjoy them every summer, and cruise lines are still seeing huge demand. It simply means that the weather is becoming another factor worth considering when choosing where to cruise.

1. Norwegian Fjords

If the Mediterranean is all about sunshine and ancient cities, Norway offers almost the complete opposite in the best possible way.

Norwegian Fjords

Summer is the perfect time to cruise the Norwegian Fjords, when waterfalls are flowing, mountains remain dusted with snow in places and daylight seems to stretch on forever. Temperatures are generally comfortable for walking, making it far easier to enjoy scenic viewpoints, hiking trails or picturesque waterfront towns without constantly searching for the nearest patch of shade.

The scenery does most of the talking here. Sailing through towering fjords is every bit as memorable as arriving in a famous Mediterranean port, just with a much cooler breeze.

2. Iceland

Iceland has become increasingly popular with cruise passengers over the past few years, and it’s easy to understand why.

Iceland cruise

Summer temperatures often sit comfortably between 10°C and 15°C, creating ideal conditions for exploring waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, black sand beaches and geothermal springs. Rather than worrying about overheating, many visitors end up packing an extra jumper for shore excursions.

Long daylight hours also mean there’s plenty of time to explore, and on some sailings the famous midnight sun means daylight can last almost around the clock.

3. Alaska

Alaska proves that a summer cruise doesn’t have to involve beaches and sun loungers to be unforgettable.

Mendenhall Glacier

Instead of historic city centres, the highlights here include glaciers, whales, bears and some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the world. Summer temperatures are usually comfortable enough for spending hours outdoors, whether that’s watching wildlife from the deck or taking a shore excursion into the wilderness.

It’s a completely different style of cruise, but for travellers looking to escape the heat while still enjoying an unforgettable holiday, Alaska is hard to beat.

4. The British Isles

The British Isles don’t always receive the attention they deserve when people are planning a cruise, but they can make an excellent alternative during the summer months.

The image shows a rugged British coastline under a cloudy sky, with a stone pier extending into the choppy sea. A striped lighthouse stands at the end of the pier, and waves crash against the structure, creating a moody and atmospheric scene. The foreground features dark, rocky terrain, contrasting with the gray sea and sky.

Cruises around England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland combine historic cities with dramatic coastlines, castles and charming fishing villages. Even during a warm spell, temperatures are generally much easier to manage than southern Europe, making walking tours and sightseeing a far more comfortable experience.

It also offers something a little different for travellers who have already visited the Mediterranean several times and fancy a change of scenery.

Yes, we’ve had our own heatwaves, but they’re still a few degrees below what you’d experience in the Med – especially the further north in the UK that you sail.

5. Baltic Capitals

For travellers who enjoy exploring cities on foot, the Baltic is one of the best summer cruise regions available.

Copenhagen

Ports such as Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn are packed with history, beautiful architecture and excellent museums, but without the intense heat that can make sightseeing more difficult further south.

Summer brings long daylight hours here too, giving visitors even more time to enjoy each destination without feeling rushed.

6. Canada & New England

Late summer and early autumn are particularly beautiful for cruises around Canada and New England.

Niagra Falls

The region combines attractive coastal towns, fresh seafood, rugged coastlines and, later in the season, spectacular autumn colours. Temperatures are generally pleasant for walking, making it easy to spend a full day exploring without the relentless heat that can sometimes accompany Mediterranean sightseeing.

It’s a destination that feels wonderfully relaxed, with a completely different pace to many European cruises.

7. Australia And New Zealand

For anyone with flexibility over when they travel, heading to the Southern Hemisphere opens up even more possibilities.

Sydney Australia

Australia can certainly become very hot during its own summer, particularly in the north, but cruises visiting the southern cities or combining Australia with New Zealand often enjoy far more comfortable conditions than southern Europe during peak Mediterranean season.

New Zealand is particularly appealing for travellers who enjoy nature, with spectacular fjords, rolling green landscapes and outdoor adventures that are much more enjoyable when temperatures remain moderate.

8. Arctic And Greenland Expeditions

For those who really want to leave the heat behind, expedition cruises into the Arctic or Greenland offer a completely different kind of adventure.

Zodiac boat in Greenland

These voyages focus on dramatic icebergs, remote landscapes and incredible wildlife rather than beaches and beach clubs. Polar bears, whales and enormous glaciers replace crowded tourist attractions, while cool temperatures make spending time on deck surprisingly enjoyable.

They’re certainly not the cheapest cruises available, but they offer experiences that are difficult to find anywhere else in the world.

Already Booked A Mediterranean Cruise? Here’s How To Stay Comfortable

If a Mediterranean cruise is already on the calendar, there’s no reason to panic if the forecast looks particularly warm.

Cruise Mummy with sunglasses takes a selfie in front of the unique cube houses in Rotterdam, Netherlands, during a Princess Cruises shore excursion. The distinctive yellow and gray buildings stand out under a clear blue sky.

Choosing morning shore excursions can make a huge difference, as temperatures are often much more comfortable before midday. Lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of sunscreen quickly become essentials, while carrying more water than seems necessary is never a bad idea.

Many experienced cruisers also build regular breaks into their day. Instead of trying to see every attraction in one go, stopping for a cold drink in an air-conditioned café or visiting a museum during the hottest part of the afternoon can make sightseeing much more enjoyable.

Fan in a cruise cabin

Portable fans and cooling towels have also become increasingly popular among regular Mediterranean cruisers, especially during the height of summer. You can also sometimes get one for your cruise cabin by asking guest services or your cabin attendant. Of course, in a heatwave they’re likely to be in high demand!

Perhaps most importantly, it’s worth remembering that it’s perfectly acceptable to skip an excursion altogether. Spending a quieter day enjoying the ship while many other passengers head ashore can be surprisingly relaxing, particularly if the weather is exceptionally hot.

Final Word

The Mediterranean isn’t suddenly becoming a destination to avoid. Its history, culture, beaches and incredible food continue to attract millions of cruise passengers every year, and for good reason.

That said, as hotter summers become more common, it’s understandable that some travellers are beginning to look further afield. Whether it’s sailing between Norwegian fjords, spotting whales in Alaska or exploring Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, there are plenty of cruises where comfortable temperatures are simply another part of the holiday.

Sometimes the best way to escape the heat is simply to point the ship in a different direction.

Six Cruise Passengers Arrested At Port Canaveral In Single Day

Six cruise passengers faced arrest at Port Canaveral on Friday, 17th July 2026, as Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies detained them for outstanding warrants and probation violations. The arrests occurred on what was otherwise a routine embarkation and disembarkation day at one of America’s busiest cruise ports, with three major cruise ships in port simultaneously.

Port Canaveral Cruise Port

Two of the arrested individuals, 24-year-old Martell Murray and his travelling companion, 24-year-old Kenderia Burney, both from Atlanta, Georgia, never made it aboard their intended vessel. Murray was wanted on a warrant related to violating his release conditions for murder charges, whilst Burney faced a warrant for violation of probation.

The pair had arrived at the port ready to embark on what should have been a holiday at sea. Instead, they were processed and taken to Brevard County Jail, which the sheriff’s office facetiously referred to as “Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge” in their social media announcement. Both Murray and Burney remain in custody without bond, their cruise plans indefinitely postponed.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has built a reputation for its pointed social media presence, often using humour to highlight arrests and reinforce the message that fugitives will be apprehended regardless of their travel plans. The agency’s Facebook post about these arrests generated significant public attention, underscoring the seriousness with which local law enforcement treats outstanding warrants.

Tampa And South Carolina Residents Face Court Violations

The third and fourth arrests involved individuals with less serious violations but who nonetheless found their cruise plans disrupted. Veronica Hamlet, a 38-year-old from Tampa, Florida, was detained on a warrant for failure to appear in court. Meanwhile, 66-year-old James Brewton from Allendale, South Carolina, faced arrest for a probation violation warrant.

Both Hamlet and Brewton were able to secure relatively modest bonds and gain release the following day. Hamlet posted a $1,000 bond on Saturday, 18th July, whilst Brewton was released the same day after posting a $500 bond. Authorities did not disclose whether the two knew each other or were travelling together, nor whether they were attempting to embark on a new sailing or had just disembarked from a completed voyage.

These arrests highlight how even minor legal infractions can catch up with travellers at cruise terminals, where security screenings and warrant checks have become standard procedure. For Hamlet and Brewton, what should have been a straightforward travel day turned into an unexpected encounter with law enforcement and an overnight stay in county custody.

Two Disembarking Passengers Violated Probation Terms

The final two arrests of the day involved passengers who had completed their cruises but faced legal consequences upon return to United States soil. Both individuals were on felony probation and had not received approval to leave the country, making their cruise holidays direct violations of their probation terms.

The names of these two passengers were not released by authorities, though the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they were taken into custody as they disembarked from their vessels. Their situations underscore a critical legal requirement that many on probation may not fully understand: leaving the country, even for a short cruise to nearby Bahamas ports, requires explicit permission from probation officers and the courts.

The consequences of these violations can be severe, potentially including extended probation terms, additional conditions, or even incarceration. For these two passengers, the brief escape that a cruise holiday provided came with a significant legal price tag that will likely impact them long after their fellow passengers have returned to their normal routines.

Three Major Cruise Lines Had Vessels In Port

Whilst the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office did not identify which specific vessels the arrested passengers were sailing on or attempting to board, three cruise ships from three different major cruise lines were docked at Port Canaveral on Friday, 17th July. The cruise lines themselves were not involved in the arrests and there were no reports of poor behaviour or altercations aboard any of the ships.

Carnival Glory

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Glory had just completed a four-night Bahamas itinerary that included calls at Nassau and the cruise line’s newest private destination, Celebration Key. The 2,980-passenger vessel operates year-round short cruises from Port Canaveral, offering both three-night and four-night options that appeal to Florida residents and visitors seeking quick getaways.

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Wish was also in port after finishing a four-night Bahamas sailing that visited Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The vessel, which can accommodate up to 4,000 guests when fully booked, has become a staple at Port Canaveral since entering service, offering the same pattern of short three-night and four-night sailings throughout the year.

Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas represented the largest vessel in port that day, having just returned from a four-night Bahamas cruise calling at Nassau and the cruise line’s acclaimed private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. This Oasis-class ship can host 5,668 guests at double occupancy and operates year-round short cruises from the Space Coast port.

The ship has quickly become one of Royal Caribbean’s most popular vessels for quick weekend getaways since its deployment to Port Canaveral.

No Impact On Vessel Operations Or Schedules

Despite the multiple arrests taking place at the terminal, none of the three cruise ships experienced any delays or operational disruptions. All vessels departed on schedule for their next sailings, three-night weekend cruises that represent a popular option for travellers seeking short breaks.

The seamless continuation of operations reflects the well-established procedures that exist between cruise lines, port authorities, and local law enforcement. These protocols ensure that security matters are handled efficiently without impacting the thousands of other passengers who are lawfully embarking or disembarking on any given day.

Port Canaveral has evolved into one of the world’s busiest cruise ports, regularly handling multiple large vessels simultaneously. The terminal infrastructure and security systems are designed to process thousands of passengers each day whilst maintaining thorough screening procedures that can identify individuals with outstanding warrants or other legal issues.

Warrant Checks Standard Procedure At Cruise Terminals

Background checks for outstanding warrants have become increasingly common at cruise ports across the United States, making arrests a regular occurrence for those attempting to flee legal troubles by taking to the seas. Law enforcement agencies view cruise terminals as opportune locations to apprehend individuals with outstanding warrants, as travellers must present identification and pass through security checkpoints.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office made clear its stance on enforcing the law regardless of travel plans. “Whether you’re from Florida or Alaska, if you come to Brevard County and break the law…or in this case have a warrant…you better believe that we will lock you up!” the agency stated in its social media post about the arrests.

This aggressive approach to warrant enforcement at cruise terminals serves multiple purposes. It acts as a deterrent to those considering using cruise travel as an escape from legal responsibilities, provides an opportunity to apprehend individuals who might otherwise be difficult to locate, and reassures the law-abiding public that security at ports remains robust.

History Of Cruise Port Arrests Spans Wide Range

Unfortunately, arrests at cruise ports have become a familiar occurrence across major embarkation points in the United States and beyond. Whilst large-scale incidents such as significant brawls or major altercations remain relatively rare, the steady drumbeat of individual arrests for outstanding warrants continues year-round.

A small port police station box ready to respond and serve people

Local law enforcement agencies work closely with port authorities and cruise line security personnel to identify and apprehend individuals with legal issues. Recent years have seen a Kentucky man arrested at PortMiami in December 2024 for more than $100,000 in unpaid child support, demonstrating that even civil matters can result in detention at cruise terminals.

In another notable 2025 case, a Pennsylvania woman was arrested for misappropriating GoFundMe donations, including using the funds to purchase a cruise for herself. The brazen nature of that particular case highlighted how some individuals seem to give little thought to the legal consequences of their actions, even when spending ill-gotten gains in highly monitored public spaces like cruise terminals.

The range of charges that have led to arrests at cruise ports is remarkably broad. Embezzlement, drug possession, casino fraud, planting hidden cameras in cabins or public spaces, credit card fraud, use of forged documents, sexual assault, and numerous other offences have all resulted in passengers being detained either before embarking on their holidays or immediately upon return.

Industry Cooperation Essential For Port Security

The cruise industry has invested heavily in security measures in recent decades, working hand-in-hand with law enforcement to ensure passenger safety whilst also helping to identify individuals who should not be travelling. Modern cruise terminals employ sophisticated identification verification systems, watchlist screening, and coordination with local, state, and federal law enforcement databases.

This cooperation extends beyond just checking for outstanding warrants. Cruise lines maintain their own security protocols and can deny boarding to individuals who pose safety risks or have violated company policies on previous sailings. The multi-layered approach creates an environment where both cruise line security personnel and law enforcement officers play crucial roles in maintaining order.

For the vast majority of cruise passengers who have no legal issues, these security measures are barely noticeable and cause no delays or inconvenience. The systems are designed to flag only those individuals with outstanding warrants or other legal problems, allowing the smooth processing of thousands of law-abiding travellers each day.

As cruise travel continues to grow in popularity, with short sailings from ports like Port Canaveral particularly appealing to those seeking quick getaways, the coordination between cruise lines and law enforcement will remain essential. The six arrests on 17th July 2026 serve as a clear reminder that attempting to use cruise travel as an escape from legal responsibilities is a strategy that will almost certainly fail, leaving would-be holidaymakers in custody rather than at sea.

Pregnant Passenger Medically Evacuated From Carnival Sunrise Near Miami

A pregnant cruiser was medically evacuated by the US Coast Guard just hours after Carnival Sunrise departed from PortMiami on 16th July 2026. This occurred following the onset of serious pregnancy complications. The 29-year-old woman was safely transported to shore and taken to a Miami Beach hospital whilst the ship continued its scheduled Bahamas itinerary.

Carnival Sunrise

The US Coast Guard Station Miami Beach dispatched a rescue boat crew after receiving an urgent request from Carnival Sunrise’s security manager. This request was made approximately four miles northeast of Government Cut, the main shipping channel connecting PortMiami to the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel had departed at around 3:30 p.m. EDT, meaning the medical emergency developed within hours of embarkation.

“A Coast Guard Station Miami Beach boat crew medically evacuated a 29 year old woman experiencing pregnancy complications from a cruise ship approximately 4 miles northeast of Government Cut on Thursday,” the US Coast Guard Southeast confirmed via Facebook.

“The rescue began after Sector Miami watchstanders received a report from the vessel’s security manager requesting Coast Guard assistance.”

The proximity to port allowed for a swift response, with rescuers able to reach the 101,509-gross ton vessel quickly. They transferred the passenger to their rescue boat. The location of the emergency, just miles from Miami’s coastline, proved fortunate for the expectant mother who required urgent medical attention.

Swift Transfer to Mount Sinai Medical Centre Miami Beach

Following the successful evacuation from Carnival Sunrise, Coast Guard personnel transported the woman directly to shore. Emergency medical services were standing by. An ambulance was waiting to receive the patient and immediately transported her to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, a leading healthcare facility equipped to handle high-risk pregnancy complications.

The coordinated response between the cruise ship’s medical team, Coast Guard rescuers, and shore-side emergency services exemplified the well-established protocols that exist for maritime medical emergencies in South Florida waters.

Mount Sinai Medical Center, located in Miami Beach, is recognised for its comprehensive maternity services and emergency obstetric care capabilities.

No updates on the passenger’s condition have been publicly released. Carnival Cruise Line has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. The cruise line typically maintains passenger privacy in medical situations unless there are broader safety implications for other guests or significant operational impacts.

Carnival Sunrise Continues Bahamas Sailing Without Itinerary Changes

The medical evacuation did not disrupt Carnival Sunrise’s planned four-night voyage to the Bahamas. Cruise tracking data confirmed the vessel remained on schedule, proceeding towards Princess Cays and Nassau without reported itinerary modifications.

The 2,984-passenger ship was observed sailing calmly at approximately nine knots. This is consistent with normal cruising speed en route to Princess Cays, Carnival’s private destination in the Bahamas.

The relatively brief delay associated with the Coast Guard transfer did not necessitate any adjustments to port calls or scheduled arrival times.

Carnival Sunrise, which underwent a significant refurbishment in 2019 as part of the line’s fleet modernisation programme, operates year-round short cruises from PortMiami. The ship’s four-night and five-night Bahamas itineraries are popular choices for guests seeking quick getaways, often including first-time cruisers and families.

Understanding Carnival’s Pregnancy Policy and Safety Requirements

Carnival Cruise Line, like all major cruise operators, maintains stringent pregnancy policies designed to protect both expectant mothers and their unborn children. The cruise line prohibits women from sailing beyond their 24th week of pregnancy by the end of the cruise. This policy is actually more restrictive than most airline regulations.

“Pregnant women are welcome on board. Please note that for your own safety and the safety of your unborn child, you must not be beyond your 24th week of pregnancy by the end of the cruise to be allowed to sail,” Carnival’s official policy states.

“In every case you need a confirmation by your attending physician. Please ask us for the appropriate form.”

The 24-week cutoff is carefully calculated based on the limitations of shipboard medical facilities. Whilst cruise ships are equipped with medical centres staffed by qualified physicians and nurses, these facilities are designed primarily for urgent care and stabilisation rather than specialised obstetric services or neonatal care.

For context, most airlines permit domestic air travel until 36 weeks of pregnancy and international flights until between 28 and 32 weeks, depending on the carrier. The more conservative approach taken by cruise lines reflects the additional challenges of coordinating medical evacuations at sea compared to aircraft diversions.

Medical Documentation Required Before Embarkation for Expecting Mothers

Carnival enforces its pregnancy policy rigorously, requiring expectant mothers to obtain written confirmation from their attending physician that they are medically cleared to sail. The cruise line provides specific forms that must be completed by healthcare providers and submitted during the booking and check-in process.

During online check-in, all female passengers are asked whether they are pregnant as part of the health screening questions. This system ensures that pregnant guests are aware of the policy requirements. It provides an opportunity for the cruise line to verify compliance before embarkation day.

The requirement for physician approval acknowledges that pregnancy progresses differently for each woman and that individual health circumstances can vary significantly. A doctor’s assessment helps identify any risk factors that might make sea travel inadvisable, even within the 24-week window.

The 29-year-old passenger evacuated from Carnival Sunrise would necessarily have been within the allowable timeframe and obtained medical clearance to board, as enforcement of the policy at the gangway is standard procedure. However, pregnancy complications can arise unexpectedly, even in previously healthy pregnancies. This underscores why medical protocols and evacuation capabilities remain essential.

Strict Enforcement Demonstrated in Previous Boarding Denials

Carnival’s commitment to enforcing its pregnancy policy was notably demonstrated in 2024. A woman attempting to board Carnival Luminosa was denied embarkation after presenting at 26 weeks pregnant – two weeks beyond the permitted limit. This incident, reported by Cruise Hive, illustrated that the cruise line prioritises passenger safety over commercial considerations.

Such denials, whilst disappointing for the passengers involved, reflect the serious safety concerns that underpin the policy. Premature births carry significant risks, and complications requiring emergency delivery can quickly become life-threatening. This occurs without access to proper neonatal intensive care facilities and specialised obstetric equipment.

Cruise ship medical centres are typically staffed by general practitioners with emergency medicine training. They are supported by nurses with various specialisations. However, they lack the obstetric specialists, neonatologists, and sophisticated equipment found in hospital labour and delivery units.

Limitations of Shipboard Medical Facilities Compared to Shore Hospitals

The medical centres aboard cruise ships, including those operated by Carnival, serve an important function in providing emergency care. They treat common illnesses and injuries, and stabilise patients until they can be transferred to shore facilities. However, they are fundamentally different from land-based hospitals in scope and capability.

The image shows an inside view of a hospital room, viewed from the doorway. It features a modern Hill-Rom hospital bed centered in the room, with medical curtains partially drawn around it. To the right of the door, there's a sign reading "GREEN ZONE". The environment appears sterile and well-equipped for patient care.

A typical cruise ship medical centre can handle a range of medical situations including cardiac emergencies, injuries, infections, and minor surgical procedures. Staff are trained to provide advanced life support and have access to diagnostic equipment. This includes X-ray machines, laboratory testing capabilities, and a pharmacy stocked with essential medications.

What these facilities cannot provide is the level of specialised care required for high-risk obstetric emergencies. This is particularly true for premature deliveries or complicated births. Neonatal intensive care units, essential for babies born prematurely, require highly specialised equipment. This includes incubators, ventilators, and monitoring systems that are simply not feasible to maintain aboard a moving vessel.

The limitations become even more pronounced when complications arise. Obstetric emergencies can require immediate access to operating theatres for caesarean sections and blood transfusion services. This requires teams of specialists including obstetricians, anaesthesiologists, and paediatricians – resources that exist only in comprehensive medical facilities ashore.

Broader Context of Medical Evacuations in the Cruise Industry

Medical evacuations from cruise ships are more common than many passengers realise. However, they represent a small fraction of the millions of cruise passengers who sail each year. The US Coast Guard alone conducts hundreds of medical evacuations annually from cruise ships operating in American waters. They respond to conditions ranging from heart attacks and strokes to traumatic injuries and pregnancy complications.

The cruise industry has invested significantly in medical capabilities and evacuation protocols over the past two decades. Advances in telemedicine allow shipboard doctors to consult with specialists ashore in real time. Improved communication systems enable faster coordination with coast guard services and port authorities when evacuations become necessary.

Geographic location plays a crucial role in evacuation logistics. Medical emergencies occurring close to port, as in this Carnival Sunrise incident, can be resolved relatively quickly with boat transfers. Situations arising in open ocean or remote areas may require helicopter evacuations. These are weather-dependent and logistically complex, or the ship diverting to the nearest suitable port.

The costs associated with medical evacuations can be substantial. They often run into tens of thousands of pounds when helicopter services or ship diversions are involved. This reality underscores the importance of comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers medical emergencies and evacuations whilst cruising. Standard health insurance policies typically provide limited or no coverage outside one’s home country.

Naming New Cruise Ships Proves Increasingly Difficult For Industry

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador John Heald has revealed that cruise lines are finding it increasingly challenging to name new ships. He explained why the company opted to revive the legacy name Destiny for its upcoming vessel.

The decision reflects a broader industry trend as cruise companies grapple with limited naming options in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

In a recent video update shared with followers, Heald addressed the complexities surrounding ship nomenclature in today’s cruise industry. He emphasised that his comments represented his personal views on the matter rather than official company policy.

The cruise veteran explained that the landscape has changed dramatically from previous decades. “It’s not like 20 or 30 years ago when there were only two or three big cruise lines and, even then, people started taking other brands’ names,” Heald noted in his update.

The modern cruise industry has expanded significantly, with numerous brands operating under major corporate umbrellas alongside independent operators. This proliferation of cruise lines has created a naming challenge that didn’t exist when the sector was smaller and less competitive.

Brand Identity Remains Central To Vessel Nomenclature Strategy

Heald stressed that ship names must accurately reflect each cruise line’s distinct brand identity and product offering. This requirement adds another layer of complexity to the naming process, as companies seek monikers that resonate with their target audiences whilst remaining distinctive in the marketplace.

John Heald

The naming challenge varies considerably between different cruise operators, according to Heald’s assessment. He pointed out that certain companies enjoy more flexibility in their choices due to their unique brand positioning.

Lines such as Cunard, Holland America and Disney have opportunities for more distinctive naming conventions, Heald observed. These brands can draw upon rich historical traditions, geographical themes or entertainment properties that provide deeper pools of potential names.

Long-Term Vision Drives Contemporary Naming Decisions

Cruise lines must adopt a forward-thinking approach when selecting vessel names. They need to consider not merely current trends but also long-term brand evolution.

“Cruise lines have to think very long and hard about a name that will be not just for now but also for the future,” Heald explained.

This strategic consideration becomes particularly important given the operational lifespan of modern cruise ships. Contemporary vessels typically remain in service for 30 years or more. This means names must retain relevance and appeal across multiple decades of changing consumer preferences and market conditions.

The pressure to choose wisely has led many cruise lines to revisit their heritage rather than risk introducing names that might feel dated or inappropriate in future years. This conservative approach offers the security of proven brand equity whilst honouring company history.

Carnival Destiny Name Carries Significant Historical Weight

The decision to name Carnival’s forthcoming flagship Destiny represents more than simple nostalgia, according to Heald. “That’s why ‘Destiny’ is perfect because, just as we have Mardi Gras, Celebration, Jubilee, Festivale and Tropicale, these are legacy names that deserve to live on,” he stated.

Carnival has successfully revived several historic names in recent years, demonstrating the strategy’s effectiveness. The current Mardi Gras, which entered service in 2021, paid homage to Carnival’s very first ship from 1972, creating an emotional connection spanning five decades.

Similarly, Carnival Celebration honoured the line’s 1987 vessel of the same name when it debuted in 2022. The recently delivered Carnival Jubilee likewise commemorated the original ship that sailed for Carnival from 1986.

These legacy names carry deep significance within the Carnival brand. They represent pivotal moments in the company’s evolution from a single-ship operation to the world’s largest cruise line. They evoke memories for past passengers whilst introducing new generations to the company’s storied heritage.

Personal Connection Influences Ambassador’s Perspective On Naming

Heald revealed that the Destiny name holds particular personal significance for him beyond its corporate importance. The brand ambassador disclosed that he served as a crew member aboard the original Carnival Destiny when the vessel was delivered by Fincantieri shipyard in 1996.

The image shows the Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship sailing through open ocean, leaving a light trail of wake behind it. The ship’s distinct red and blue hull stands out, with multiple decks featuring balconies, pools, and recreational areas. The clear blue sky and expansive sea emphasize the grandeur and luxury of the vessel on its journey.
Mardi Gras

The original Carnival Destiny represented a watershed moment in cruise industry history when it debuted nearly three decades ago. At the time of its introduction, the 101,353-ton vessel claimed the title of the world’s largest cruise ship, a designation that captured global attention and helped propel cruising into mainstream travel consciousness.

That groundbreaking vessel underwent a transformation in 2020 when it was renamed Carnival Sunshine following an extensive refurbishment. The ship continues to sail for Carnival today, serving various itineraries across the fleet’s deployment pattern.

“These are names that mean so much to the past as they will in the future,” Heald reflected. He highlighted the emotional resonance that legacy names create among crew members, past passengers and cruise enthusiasts. His personal history with the original Destiny adds authenticity to the naming decision.

New Destiny Will Debut As Carnival’s Largest Ever Vessel

The forthcoming Carnival Destiny is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. This is the same facility that built its namesake predecessor.

The new vessel is scheduled to enter service ahead of the 2029 summer season, representing the next evolution in Carnival’s ship design.

Measuring 230,000 gross tonnes, the new Destiny will claim the distinction of being the largest cruise ship ever built for Carnival Cruise Line. This substantial size increase reflects the industry’s ongoing trend towards larger vessels offering expanded amenities and passenger capacity.

The vessel will serve as the inaugural ship in Carnival’s new Ace Class series, establishing the template for future vessels in this innovative ship category. The Ace Class represents Carnival’s response to evolving passenger preferences and competitive pressures in the contemporary cruise marketplace.

Carnival has ordered multiple ships in the Ace Class series from Fincantieri, with deliveries planned throughout the late 2020s and early 2030s. These vessels will gradually replace older tonnage whilst expanding the line’s overall capacity.

Additional Details Expected In November Announcement

Heald indicated that cruise enthusiasts won’t have to wait much longer for more information about the revolutionary new vessel. “The ship will be truly incomparable; I can’t wait to share more news about that,” he stated.

This builds anticipation amongst Carnival’s loyal passenger base. Further details about the new Destiny are expected to be announced in November, according to Heald’s timeline.

These revelations will likely include specifics about onboard amenities, dining venues, entertainment options and innovative features that will distinguish the Ace Class from previous Carnival ships.

The November announcement timing suggests Carnival plans a comprehensive information release rather than gradual details. This approach allows the company to generate significant media coverage and passenger excitement in a concentrated period.

Industry observers anticipate that the new Destiny will incorporate lessons learned from recent Carnival vessels whilst introducing entirely new concepts to the brand. The ship’s size provides opportunities for amenities previously impossible on smaller vessels.

Broader Industry Implications Of Legacy Name Revival

The trend towards reviving historic ship names extends well beyond Carnival, reflecting broader industry dynamics. Royal Caribbean International recently announced plans to name a future Icon Class vessel Discovery of the Seas, echoing earlier ships in their fleet history.

Norwegian Cruise Line has similarly looked to its past, with Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima incorporating elements of previous naming conventions.

Even luxury lines have embraced this approach, with Cunard maintaining its traditional naming pattern across Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria.

This naming strategy offers multiple advantages beyond simple nostalgia. Legacy names provide instant brand recognition, particularly among experienced cruisers who remember the original vessels.

They also simplify marketing efforts by leveraging existing brand equity rather than building awareness from scratch. The practice additionally allows cruise lines to honour their heritage whilst maintaining consistency across their fleets.

As the industry matures and company histories extend across multiple decades, this connection to the past becomes increasingly valuable in differentiating brands within a competitive marketplace.

Seabourn Celebrates 40 Years With 54 Exclusive Ocean And Expedition Voyages In 2028

Seabourn has revealed “The Ruby Collection,” a curated series of 54 voyages in 2028 to commemorate the line’s 40th anniversary. Spanning its fleet of five luxury ships, the collection features enhanced onboard offerings, exclusive experiences, and access to destinations where larger ships cannot reach.

Now open for booking, the Ruby Collection spans the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, Japan, Alaska, Northern Europe, the Arctic, and Antarctica. Notable voyages include: a 120-day “Cape to Cape” World Cruise departing January 7, 2028; the line’s second Grand Expedition: Pole to Pole, a 96-day journey from the High Arctic to Antarctica; a Yachtsman Collection of Caribbean and Mediterranean voyages returning to the intimate harbors that inspired the line’s founding; and newly curated itineraries designed around seasonal cultural moments in Japan, Southeast Asia, and beyond.

“Some journeys stay with travelers forever,” said Mark Tamis, president of Seabourn. “Our own journey began in 1988 when we redefined cruising with the world’s first fleet of luxury small ships, designed to feel like private yachts. As we celebrate 40 years of exploration, that same pioneering spirit shapes The Ruby Collection, featuring voyages across our ocean and expedition fleet that reflect where we began while pushing further into the places and experiences that define what exploration means with Seabourn.”

The Yachtsman Collection

The Yachtsman Collection revisits the vision that launched The Yachts of Seabourn in 1988: intimate ships built for relaxed elegance and access to harbors beyond the reach of larger vessels. The voyages concentrate on smaller Mediterranean and Caribbean ports, with extended time ashore and unhurried days at sea.

The collection leans on the destinations and events that distinguish Seabourn from larger-ship competitors. Itineraries call at secluded yacht havens including Bequia, Martinique, and British Virgin Islands, and pair coastal exploration in Corsica and Sardinia with signature experiences such as Caviar in the Surf at Carambola Beach, St. Kitts and Shopping with the Chef market visits in select ports. Several sailings build in evening stays, including an overnight in Portofino and time on Pátmos to visit the Monastery of St. John.

In the Caribbean, Seabourn Ovation operates a series of seven- to 14-day yacht-harbor voyages between Sint Maarten and Barbados, among them itineraries through the ABC Islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. Two New Year’s itineraries culminate in a New Year’s Day Caviar in the Surf celebration as Seabourn Ovation and Seabourn Quest converge at Carambola Beach, St. Kitts.

In the Mediterranean, Seabourn Ovation runs a series of seven-day yacht-harbor sailings across the Aegean Sea, the Côte d’Azur, the Dalmatian Coast, and the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. The itineraries feature Seabourn’s signature Marina Day, when the ship’s retractable marina opens to the sea for complimentary watersports.

New & Distinctive

From new ports to innovative itinerary combinations, the Ruby Collection features newly designed voyages and experiences created specifically for the Ruby Jubilee, extending Seabourn’s reach from the fjords of Greenland to the festivals of Taiwan.

Seabourn Encore sails a series of Southeast Asia and Japan itineraries built around overnights in Shanghai, Osaka, and Kobe, and new Taiwan port calls at Taichung and Tainan. One voyage is timed to Taiwan’s Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival, staged after a visit to the mountain town of Shifen, while Shopping with the Chef excursions take guests through regional markets from Nagasaki to Kagoshima.

Seabourn Encore returns to Alaska with itineraries timed to the extended daylight of the summer solstice, adding maiden calls to Petersburg, Valdez, and the Chiswell Islands. The season offers an eight-day pre-cruise Denali Experience, combining rail travel into Denali National Park, a flightseeing excursion, and a farewell dinner in Juneau.

On Seabourn Quest, a new Canada and New England itinerary marks Seabourn’s return to Red Bay, with an overnight in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and scenic cruising along the St. Lawrence River.

  • Northern Europe, the Arctic and the Canadian Maritimes

Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit expand the line’s exploration of the North. A round-trip Reykjavík expedition dedicates six days to Svalbard, home to the Arctic’s largest concentration of polar bears, with 199 guests aboard. New expedition itineraries linking Iceland and the British Isles add three port calls in the Faroe Islands, including a maiden call at Tvøroyri, along with the capital of Tórshavn and a Zodiac landing at Klaksvík. A maiden call at Cape Clear Island, Ireland, brings guests to the cliffs of Mizen Head. Farther west, expedition voyages trace the Greenland coast to Nanortalik and reach the Torngat Mountains and the Labrador coast.

  • South America & Antarctica

Seabourn’s expedition ships extend deeper into the Southern Hemisphere, with itineraries that combine Antarctica with the Juan Fernández Islands and Chilean Fjords, or with the Falklands, South Georgia, and Brazil. A 34-day voyage will cross the Atlantic Ocean, with visits to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the remote islands of Saint Helena and Tristan da Cunha – the most remote inhabited island in the world – along with scenic cruising from Seabourn Venture around Boatswain Bird Island. The season emphasizes expedition access, with Zodiac and kayak exploration, penguin colonies, and landings on remote Antarctic shores.

2028 Cape to Cape World Cruise

The centerpiece of The Ruby Collection is the 120-Day “Cape to Cape” World Cruise. Departing January 7, 2028, Seabourn Quest will traverse more than 26,000 nautical miles, visiting 58 destinations across 23 countries on five continents, with immersive exploration in destinations such as Antarctica, Easter Island, the Falkland Islands, and Cape Town. The voyage begins with a transit of the Panama Canal, a nod to Seabourn’s very first sailing. A 112-day option from Miami to Lisbon is also available.

For the first time, guests will enjoy complimentary expedition-style experiences as part of a World Cruise itinerary, led by an 18-person expedition team. These immersive adventures will be available in Antarctica, Chilean Fjords, and other select locations, bringing guests closer to the continent’s stunning landscapes and wildlife.

2028 Grand Expedition: Pole to Pole

In a defining moment for the brand during its 40th anniversary year, Seabourn Venture will once again unite the world’s northernmost and southernmost frontiers with a 96-day voyage departing August 16, 2028, sailing from the Arctic to Antarctica across more than 20,500 nautical miles and 147 degrees of latitude. The journey begins in the High Arctic, exploring Ellesmere Island, one of the world’s northernmost and most remote frontiers. Along the way, guests experience wildlife sightings and expedition landings across 14 countries and territories, including five days in Antarctica, three in South Georgia, and three in the Falkland Islands. An 82-day Arctic to Antarctica option is also available, departing August 30, 2028.

Returning Favorites

The Ruby Collection also brings back guest favorites that have anchored the Seabourn experience for nearly four decades. Baltic itineraries return alongside established routes across Alaska, the British Isles, Southeast Asia, and Antarctica, from the glacier-lined Inside Passage and the Scottish Isles to the Northwest Passage and the wildlife-rich waters of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.

Exclusive: The Atlantic

In 2028, as Seabourn celebrates its 40th anniversary, the line debuts a first-of-its-kind collaboration with The Atlantic, inspired by their annual Atlantic Festival. The “12-Day with The Atlantic: A Seabourn Conversations Exclusive” sailing departs October 4, 2028, on Seabourn Quest from Montréal to Boston, bringing leading thinkers and cultural voices on board for dynamic programming curated exclusively for Seabourn guests, with rare opportunities for direct dialogue at sea. As part of the Ruby Jubilee, this partnership expands Seabourn’s flagship Seabourn Conversations enrichment program.

Celebrating 40 Years on Every Sailing

Throughout 2028, every Seabourn sailing will feature special onboard enhancements inspired by the Ruby Jubilee, from specialty events and signature celebrations to themed entertainment and enrichment inspired by eras past. The Ruby Collection voyages will feature additional celebratory touches designed to bring Seabourn’s 40-year story to life on board. Seabourn will share additional details as they become available.

Six Cruise Passengers Arrested at Port Canaveral: Sheriff Issues Strong Warning

Trading a cruise cabin for a jail cell is the worst kind of downgrade you can get. The service really drops off and even an “obstructed view” can’t compare.

But for six cruise passengers at Port Canaveral, that’s exactly what happened on Saturday, July 18.

Port Canaveral cruise port
Port Canaveral (Cruise Fever)

The last time we wrote about arrests taking place at a cruise port it was because of a fight that broke out in the terminal near customs.

In this case, it looks like the sheriff’s office was paying attention to the manifests on cruise ships in Port Canaveral, as several names with warrants popped up.

As a warning to other would-be criminals or warrant-holders coming to the area, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office fired off a Facebook post, saying in part:

“Whether you’re from Florida or Alaska, if you come to Brevard County and break the law…or in this case have a warrant…you better believe that we will lock you up!!”

The post from Sheriff Wayne Ivey also mentioned the names of four individuals arrested in addition to two others that were placed into custody.

While some had just arrived to the Florida port, and not yet even stepped onto their ship, others were arrested after returning from their cruise back in Port Canaveral.

The Arrests

The arrests included Martell Murray of Georgia, who was wanted for violating conditions of his release on pending murder charges, and Kenderia Burney of Leon County, Florida, who faced a violation of probation warrant.

The two arrived together at the port, and Sheriff Ivey pointed out that “these two still got to vacation together at the Lodge even though they got accommodations with separate sleeping quarters.”

What is the Lodge? It’s what Ivey affectionately calls “Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge”.

Deputies also arrested Veronica Hamlet of Tampa on a failure-to-appear warrant, and James Brewton of South Carolina on a violation-of-probation warrant.

Two other unnamed passengers who were disembarking their cruise were stopped after deputies learned they were on felony probation and had traveled outside the country without the required approval from their probation officers.

Those individuals will remain in custody while the paperwork is completed.

The Facebook post with some pictures of those arrested racked up well over 2,000 comments already. One image of an individual wearing a shirt that says “THNX FOR NOTHING” was called “priceless” from one commenter.

Another stated, “Taking their pictures while still in the cruise port is diabolical.”

A Reminder for Cruisers

Port Canaveral is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, with strong coordination between Brevard County law enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection during both embarkation and disembarkation.

If you have active warrants and certain probation restrictions don’t expect to just sail right through with no disruptions to your cruising plans. Not only is this sheriff actively enforcing these rules, but it also looks like he has quite the sense of humor in informing the public.

The post did not disclose what cruise ships or cruise lines were involved.
