The Top 10 Carnival Cruise Directors Of All Time

Carnival’s cruise directors are some of the best at sea and many of them attract huge fanbases of guests who want to keep in touch long after their vacation has ended.

I’m guessing that you loved the cruise director on your last cruise – but did they make the top 10? Let’s find out.

Best Carnival cruise director - John Heald

How I came up with the top 10 cruise directors…

This post lists the top Carnival cruise directors according to popularity. Those that top the list are the most well-known, with the largest social media followings and the most mentions of their name online.

Which is the best Carnival cruise director is obviously very subjective, as we all like different things, but these are the cruise directors that people talk about the most…

1. John Heald

John Heald

John Heald is Carnival Cruise Line’s senior cruise director and brand ambassador.

John was born in Essex, England in 1965 and started his career in the entertainment industry as a musician and comedian before joining the since-retired Carnival Holiday cruise ship as a bartender in 1986.

Known for his engaging and humorous personality, John’s social media presence has made him a fan favourite among Carnival guests. He regularly posts updates and photos on his Facebook page, which has over 400,000 followers. And if ever you have a cruise question, you can contact John and he will do his best to help!

John Heald has received numerous accolades and awards throughout his career. In September 2007, Carnival gave him the “Sea Going Employee of the Year” award. And in 2018, he was awarded “Cruise Director of the Year” by the readers of Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine.

John Heald’s dedication to his job and his sparkling personality have made him one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in the cruise industry.

2. Lee Mason

Lee Mason

Lee Mason is an active cruise director for Carnival, and in 2022 was named as the cruise director of the newest ship in the fleet at the time, Carnival Celebration.

This was an acknowledgment of Lee’s popularity with Carnival guests – indeed, he was voted “Cruise Director of the Year” in Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2022.

Lee is another Brit, having been born in Cumbria, although he was trained at the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York City. He’s been working for the cruise line for six years now and has been cruise director on several ships, including Celebration’s sister ship Mardi Gras.

Lee is avery active across social media – his Facebook page has over 65,000 fans and while his Twitter account is a little quieter, he’s still active on there and enjoys speaking to guests (and seeing your cruise photos). He also has a TikTok account.

3. Chris “Donkey” Salazar

Chris Salazar

Chris Salazar has been a cruise director with Carnival for over 14 years, and it was actually way back in 2009 when he was relatively new in the role that he acquired his nickname ‘Donkey’.

It actually came from a cruise guest. Salazar and another cruise director Chris were taking calls from guests who were giving them nicknames, and a 12-year-old girl said that Salazar had big ears and teeth like the donkey from Shrek, and boy has the nickname stuck.

Indeed, in interviews, he now admits to finding it weird when people call him “Chris”!

He’s admitted that his love for being on stage is the reason he hasn’t pushed for a more senior position despite his experience, and he remains one of the most loved hosts on a cruise ship due to his wit and his energy. He’s been a Fleet Cruise Director since 2023, meaning he helps to train up newer cruise directors.

If you want to follow him on social, check out his Facebook, Instagram and TikTok accounts.

4. Jonathan “Cookie” Adams

Cookie cruise director

Jonathan Adams is another cruise director who earned their nickname from a guest calling into the cruise morning show on the ship – apparently, those call-ins can earn some lifetime nicknames!

In this instance, Adams was working with British cruise director Jen Baxter (more on her below) and they wanted paired nicknames. The one that stuck was “cookies and cream” and ever since, Adams has held the nickname “cookie”.

Cookie started working for Carnival in 2014 and began in the entertainment team before a promotion to cruise director. Guests tend to love his warmth and friendly nature, although a lot of comments also focus on how funny he is too.

He claims to be shy but you wouldn’t get this impression when you’ve cruised with him – he’s a bundle of energy, and just reading the comments from guests who’ve cruised on a Cookie ship before will tell you just how universally-loved he is.

Sadly, in 2023 Cookie announced that he was leaving Carnival, leaving guests feeling dismayed.

You can still see his updates on Facebook and Instagram.

5. Kyndall Fire

KYNDALL FIRE

Kyndall Fire (real name Kyndall Magyar) is a Texan cruise director whose fascination with Carnival began with her first cruise at age 7.

She set her sights on being a cruise director from an early age, studying Tourism Management as a way to attain her goal, and after joining the cruise line in 2016 she got her first cruise director role in 2018.

One of the recurring comments from guests when talking about Kyndall is that it’s clear how much she just loves her job. She’s extremely passionate about cruising, and about making sure every guest on board has the best experience. She also loves to lead the parties onboard and get everyone dancing!

If you’re part of the ‘Fyre Family’ and you want to keep up with Kyndall on social, you can like her Facebook and Instagram pages, where she posts about her latest experiences onboard as well as giving personal life updates.

6. Chris Williams

Chris Williams was one of the longer-serving cruise directors at Carnival, having first joined the cruise line in 2011 as a singer and then spending around a decade as a director. Warmly known as the Flying Scotsman, he also performed a show called ‘The Flying Scot’ which is always very popular with guests.

Chris is best known for his performing energy – when he’s not singing in his own shows he’s managing the onboard game shows with a deft touch and a fantastic sense of humour.

He’s very prominent on social media. You can follow him on Facebook (where he has over 30,000 followers) and over on Instagram, but he’s also one of the few cruise directors to have his own YouTube channel where he posts singing performances along with his personal passion, video game content.

However, after spending nine months as a Fleet Cruise Director, Williams announced that he was leaving the cruise line in August 2024 as he wished to spend more time with his family.

7. Matt Mitcham

Matt Mitcham spent 14 years with Carnival, with around 11 years of that time spent as a cruise director – nobody manages that amount of time without being very good at their job!

He announced his retirement from his role as cruise director in a live Facebook video back in 2020, which caused a lot of Carnival guests to be very upset – some even said they would consider cancelling their cruise!

He’s gone on to some pretty exciting things though, including serving as ‘Your Cruise Director’ on Regal Princess, the Princess Cruises ship – but specifically as part of the CBS reality TV show “The Real Love Boat”, based on the TV drama from the 1970s and 1980s.

Matt is still talking cruise on his social channels, including his Facebook page (with over 100,000 fans) and on Instagram.

8. Reverend Dr. E

Reverend Dr. E – real name Eversen Bevelle – spent 10 years working as a cruise director for Carnival, and his huge personality and confidence helped him to become one of the most popular directors for the cruise line.

He hasn’t officially retired from being a cruise director – and on Facebook he’s made clear that he may still make a return to Carnival – but he has been working on other projects and even made an appearance on the US version of the Netflix game show The Circle in 2022.

You can keep up with Reverend Dr. E on his official Facebook page and on Instagram. If he does make a comeback to Carnival as a cruise director, expect his sailings to book up quickly, especially with his new-found Netflix fame.

9. Butch Begovich

Butch Begovich was a cruise director for Carnival from 2007 until 2014, and in total, he spent 14 years working for the cruise line, becoming one of the most well-known faces on the ships that he was assigned to.

He has since moved onto other roles and currently works as the Vice President for Guest Experience at Washington Football Team. But, his time at Carnival is still remembered fondly.

He was one of the first cruise directors to make such an impact on guests that he was commonly name-dropped as a favourite on Facebook and forums such as Cruise Critic.

As with many of the best cruise directors, he was mentored directly by John Heald and spent time working closely with him.

10. Jen Baxter

Jen Baxter

Jen Baxter is another legendary cruise director who spent 20 years working with Carnival. She helped to mentor some of the more popular cruise directors of today, and was an iconic name for the cruise lines – although she was also one to split opinion, with some reviews talking about her humour being either too dry or too raunchy at times.

But many people loved her – otherwise, she wouldn’t have made it to almost 16 years as a full cruise director following her initial 4 years as an assistant.

She hasn’t left the cruise industry completely – she now works for Viking River Cruises as the Program Director, so a bit of a change of pace in terms of atmosphere.

You can still keep up to date with Jen on Facebook.

The Best Carnival Suites At Sea? Every Suite On Mardi Gras, And Which One You Should Choose (With Floor Plan Photos!)

So you’re thinking of booking a suite on Mardi Gras for your next cruise? Good decision!

Your next step is now to decide which suite type to choose. With nine different types, that’s something you’ll want to get right.

Whether you want the best suites on the ship, or need to know which Mardi Gras suites to avoid, I have all the info for you in this thorough guide. Then, I’ll give an overview of the different perks you can expect with each suite type and whether they’re worth the upgrade or not.

The 9 different suites on Mardi Gras (ranked best to worst)

There are nine different suite types to choose from on Mardi Gras, here’s an overview of each to help you decide which to choose…

1. Excel Presidential Suites

Mardi Gras Presidential Suite

Sleeps: Five guests. There are two twin beds that convert to a king-size, a double sofa bed and one upper bed.

Size: 1120 square feet. The interior is 476 square feet and the balcony is 646 square feet.

Category: SV

Suite Numbers: 17209, 17210

Why Choose: Mardi Gras’ Excel Presidential Suites are the largest suites you’ll find on any Carnival cruise ship. These luxurious suites feature huge balconies with an outdoor hot tub and shower, a day bed, loungers, an outdoor dining table and enough space for your to invite all of your friends over for a party.

When you stay in a Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, you’ll enjoy complimentary access to the Havana Pool and the Spa’s Thermal Suite.

The Presidential Suite doesn’t come cheap!

A stay in the Presidential Suite on Mardi Gras costs from $3,675 per person for a seven-night Caribbean cruise. However, on popular itineraries, you can expect to pay $10,000 per person or more.

If you want to stay in a Presidential Suite you’ll need to be quick. As there are only two of these on the ship, they usually sell out really fast.

2. Excel Aft Suites

Mardi Gras Excel Aft Suite

Sleeps: Two to five guests. In the bedroom, there are two twin beds that convert to a king-size. In the living room, some suites have a single sofa bed, some have a double sofa bed and some also have an extra Pullman bed that comes down from the ceiling.

Size: 861 square feet. The interior is 463 square feet and the balcony is 398 square feet.

Category: LS

Suite Numbers: 9501, 9504, 10492, 10495, 11501, 11506, 12502, 12503, 14498, 14517, 15478, 15495

Why Choose: If you don’t manage to get a Presidential Suite, then the Excel Aft Suite is the next best choice. In fact, some may even prefer it as it has views over the wake of the ship, whereas Presidential Suites are forward-facing.

When it comes to space, the interior area of the Excel Aft Suite is almost identical to the Presidential Suite and you’d barely notice the difference in size. The wraparound balcony is pretty large too, with almost all of the same facilities, except for the outdoor shower.

3. Excel Corner Suites

Mardi Gras Excel Corner Suite

Sleeps: Two to four guests. Depending on which Excel Corner Suite you choose, there will be space to accommodate two, three or four guests. Some suites come with a single sofa bed, some have a double sofa bed and some have a single sofa bed with an upper Pullman bed.

Why Choose: Located on the forward corners of Mardi Gras, the Excel Corner Suites offer huge wraparound balconies at a more affordable price. You won’t get a Jacuzzi on your balcony, but there is a lounge chair, patio chairs and a dining table for two.

You might want to avoid the Excel Corner Suites on deck 15, these have a split balcony due to the presence of a structural support.

4. Excel Suites

Carnival Excel Suite

Sleeps: Two to five guests. There are various bed configurations with a combination of sofa beds and upper Pullman beds. The Suites on Deck 10 are fully-accessible and feature king beds that do not convert to twins.

Why Choose: Excel Suites on Mardi Gras are twice the size of Extended Balcony Staterooms with space for a four-seater dining table and two loungers on the balcony.

If you want the Excel Suite perks (more on those later in this guide), then this is the cheapest type of suite that will get them. It’s also the only Excel Suite that has a wheelchair accessible option for disabled guests.

5. Havana Cabana Corner Suites

Mardi Gras Havana Cabana Corner Suite

Sleeps: Two guests. There are two twin beds that convert to a king-size bed.

Size: 511 square feet. The interior is 350 square feet and the patio cabana is 161 square feet.

Category: HU

Suite Numbers: 8209, 8210

Why Choose: Havana Cabana Corner Suites feature a large patio cabana. There’s a walkway between the cabana and the edge of the ship and the view is obstructed by a steel railing. However, the hammock makes the cabana a nice place to relax and you’ll also get exclusive access to the Havana Pool area.

These suites aren’t good options for families as they only sleep two people and children under 12 years old are not allowed.

6. Havana Cabana Suites

Mardi Gras Havana Cabana Suite

Sleeps: Two or three guests. There are two twin beds that convert to a king-size bed. One suite also has a single sofa bed.

Size: 426 square feet. The interior is 308 square feet and the patio cabana is 118 square feet.

Category: HS

Suite Numbers: 8250, 8251, 8256, 8257

Why Choose: Located on Deck 8, Havana Cabana Suites have a large cabana area with a lounger and comfy chairs. There’s a walkway between the patio and the edge of the ship though, so you won’t get the best views of the ocean. But, you do get access to the exclusive Havana Pool and Bar.

If you want a Havana Suite with three guests, this is your option as one of the suites has a sofa bed with a privacy divider between it and the bedroom area. However, kids under 12 are not allowed.

7. Cloud 9 Spa Suites

Mardi Gras Cloud 9

Why Choose: Cloud 9 Spa Suites are located on Deck 17 of Mardi Gras, close to the spa area and come with exclusive spa perks. These suites are the same size as Ocean Suites, but with relaxing decor and upgraded ELEMIS in-suite toiletries.

8. Ocean Suites

Mardi Gras Ocean Suite

Sleeps: Two to five guests. Various bed configurations are available in addition to the twin beds that convert to a king-size. Some suites have a single sofa bed and an upper bed, some have a double sofa bed and some have a double sofa bed and one upper bed.

Why Choose: Ocean Suites are the most popular suite type on Mardi Gras and also the most affordable. Staying in an Ocean Suite is the best way to get Carnival’s suite perks without the hefty price tag of some of the larger suites.

Each suite has a privacy curtain to divide the bedroom from the living area where the extra beds are found. There are three closets for lots of storage space and two TVs.

On Mardi Gras, some Ocean Suites have larger balconies than others. If you want a big balcony, then avoid the Ocean Suites on Deck 9 and choose one of the higher decks where the balconies are larger.

9. Family Harbor Ocean View Suites

Mardi Gras Family Harbor Ocean View Suite

Sleeps: Five guests. There are two twin beds that convert to a king-size along with a double sofa bed and one upper bed.

Size: 312 square feet. These suites do not have a balcony.

Category: FP

Suite Numbers: 4330, 4332, 4370, 4376, 4388, 4394

Why Choose: For families who want space to relax but do not want the worry of a balcony with young kids, Family Harbor Ocean View Suites are ideal. Instead of a balcony, there’s a large picture window with a window seat to look out and admire the view.

Each Family Harbor Ocean View Suite on Mardi Gras sleeps five people with a privacy curtain between the bedroom and sitting area. There are two bathrooms – one with a shower, toilet and sink and one with a small bathtub and sink.

The Craziest Complaints From Carnival Cruise Guests

I tell you what – John Heald certainly earns his wages.

The former Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Lines is now their Brand Ambassador, and he spends most days answering hundreds of questions and requests from fans on his popular Facebook page (with the help of his assistant, Jacinta).

However, not every message he receives is written in a polite way. There are many people who feel entitled to have a go at John, either because they don’t like his humour or because they feel he owes them something.

I’ve taken a look back over just the last couple of years and found some of the craziest comments and questions John’s received – you won’t believe these people are serious!

1. Please just renovate the bathrooms for us

Message: John Heald. I am cruising with my family of husband--- and our son ---he is ---- age nine years. Sensory overload is constant and overwhelming for my child who is on the spectrum. Strange sounds encountered on a cruise may make things worse and can unbearably crowded and noisy for --- and many autistic kids. We have recently discovered that the sound of the hand dryers in public bathrooms would make him so upset. Is there any way these can be removed from the bathrooms on our cruise on Carnival Vista. I know we could use the bathroom in our room but it is not always possible to make it ‘in time’. Do the have hand dryers I the disabled bathrooms? Please respond. We will be cruising in June so we need to plan. Please show some understanding

There are plenty of people who write in to John expecting a certain level of VIP treatment, but this is a whole other level.

cruise ship bathroom

Asking for the electric hand dryers to be uninstalled for the bathrooms for this one cruise, just to accommodate this one family, is so extreme. It’s obviously impossible, and also it shows no concern for the other passengers who, you know, want to dry their hands after washing them.

I understand that the child may be overwhelmed by the noise, but there are definitely alternatives that don’t require major bathroom renovation.

2. I understand that you are not Mr. Healthy

A family member is considering a cruise with Carnival on Radiance with the rest of my family. She wants to know if any of the food is genetically modified. This will be a deal breaker for her. I am learning a lot about GMO foods myself now and understand that you are not mr healthy John and are obviously from your size you are not worried. I hope Carnival does provide non-GMO foods only? At home I eat 100% organic, antibiotic, rBGH and thans to my SIL I eat GMO free. Can I do this on the Radiance? BKG number *****

This one is less about the subject matter of the complaint, and more the way they speak to John.

John Heald

John is one of the first people to admit that he is not skinny, but that does not entitle people to speak to him about his health in this way.

And the assumption of “obviously from your size you are not worried” is a whole other level of crazy. That’s just not how you speak to people!

3. Stop other people having fun!

Message: If you wont do the classy move then ban those tacky door displays! You said they bring joy to everyone. Brainless answer. No pax has that the right to use public space, and the outside of your door facing a hall is public space to decorate, advertise etc. This is why --------is a better more classy cruise line. With door decorations and ducks your ships look more like the Brimfield Flea Market.

This complaint is another that’s very entitled – expecting John to make sure that door decorations are banned from cruises.

Door decorations

Not every cruise line is the same, and Carnival is definitely one where fun takes priority. So I’m sure there’s no way door decorations will be banned. The fact that this Carnival guest assumes that others should stop having fun just because they think it’s tacky shows how selfish they really are.

Also, if they banned door decorations, where would we see the upside-down pineapples being displayed?

4. Let us bring our own tablecloth – and then wash it for us!

Strange day in so many ways – made even stranger by the demand from a guest to be able to bring his own tablecloth, have it placed on the table washed every night without any charge to him. The environmental impact of washing thousands and thousands of tablecloths every night is why we ( and most restaurants on land) stopped these some years ago. But to threaten to cancel a cruise because we don’t allow this is honestly jaw droppingly astonishing.

Hoo-boy, this one is a little crazy. It’s written from John’s perspective about a message he received from a guest who demanded they bring their own tablecloth from home, but then have the crew clean it and place it on the table from them.

Main dining room on Carnival Celebration

The crew are there to help you enjoy your cruise and, within reason, they will do all that they can to make your cruise as special as possible. But they aren’t your personal slaves and you can’t expect them to have the time to cater to such requests!

John generally has patience for guests but for him to call out the request as “jaw droppingly astonishing” shows just how far this customer wanted to push things.

5. Disrespectful non-American crew

I hope you will allow me to comment on something that has been brought to my attention by around half a dozen people or so today.Yesterday, during the Super Bowl, the American national anthem was played. Obviously, most of the guests stood up and stayed silent during the anthem, which means so much to so many of our guests. However, I did receive these comments that our crew members who were serving drink, and food did not, and carried on working. They did not stand to attention or pause their work. Those that have written to me said that they found this “ very disrespectful. “I want to try and explain. First of all the crew may not have realized that this was happening. Secondly they also have a job to do and need to keep working, and they certainly meant no disrespect.I will mention this to my colleagues to see if this is something that we need to look at for next year.Again, it was not done out of any disrespect by crew members from various nationalities, who were continuing to do their job to provide service for everyone during a very busy time.Thank you so much for listening

As a Brit, I know that I’m an outsider on this one. A Carnival guest wrote to John to complain that the crew weren’t stopping their work and standing to attention during the playing of the US national anthem.

But, here’s the thing – most of the crew aren’t American either.

Carnival crew member pouring drinks

Speaking broadly, I know that many US citizens have a real sense of national pride and they treat the anthem with a lot of respect.

That doesn’t mean non-US citizens need to do the same, though!

6. Stop posting dessert pictures and lose some weight!

Message: I am not like you John. I watch what I eat and lost weight on many of my cruises. All those dessert photos. Why?. It's amazing to see how some people eat on cruises and I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. Looking at you John you are the brand ambassador for gluttony. You need a diet plan and soon. The luxury of a cruise (for me) is the service, getting away from the stress of work and details around the house AND seeing the world (aka seeing how others live, not just the tourist attractions) - not gluttony.

Here’s another jab at John’s weight from a ‘fan’ on his Facebook page. “You need a diet plan and soon” is such a personal insult.

Look, enjoy yourself on a cruise. Eat lots if you want to. Or don’t, if you prefer to watch what you eat. Just stop judging other people.

Carnival cruise dessert

As long as they aren’t being rude or unhygienic then what does it even matter to you?

7. Cancellation rules shouldn’t apply to us!

Message: Double whammy. The winter storm has 70000 people across Michigan without power. Flights are canceled. This means DH and me will not be cruising today on Magic. We have no power. We have no 18th wedding anniversary cruise. And what are you talking about on Facebook John? Some infantile joke attempt about new years eve. We do not have insurance so I guess we are screwed. Thanks for nothing.

I’m very lucky that, so far (touch wood), I’ve never missed a cruise. I tend to make sure I travel the day before embarkation if it’s anything more than a couple of hours, because you never know what could happen en route.

However, if I did miss the ship, I’d know two things – 1) it’s not the cruise line’s fault, and 2) I can claim on my travel insurance.

Close-up of a person's hands filling out an 'Insurance Claim Form' on a tablet, with fields for policy number, date of loss, cause of loss, and amount claimed visible on the screen.

“We didn’t purchase travel insurance” is not a good enough excuse to ask the cruise line to pay in the form of a future cruise credit. Even if something wasn’t your fault, it’s on you to have insurance.

8. We’ll clean, thanks – stop trying to help!

Message: My wife and me are germaphobes and proud to be so. John the very first action we take when we get to our room is look in all the storage areas Next we take out our bottle of Clorox Clean-Up Cleaner + Bleach and clean every surface. We clean everything and everywhere John. Including the bathroom . We will ask the steward for two pool towels to put down on the sofa, The bedding is put away and not to be seen again, we bring our own bedding . I need to know if we can have a vacuum from the cabin steward. We asked on the Breeze last time and we were told this was impossible. Not very good service standards there. We only need it for 15 minutes of time. We remove the gratuities and on a five day cruise we did we tipped the cabin steward $20. We do not require any cabin service at all before we get flamed. We are in shock when we walk by some open room doors, how do some people live like that.We clean by our own standards not Carnival’s. There are many more passengers I am sure who would prefer no cabin service at all. There should then John be a system in place so that these things can be arranged pre-cruise so we do not have to waste our time trying to hunt down the cabin steward.

Yikes, this was a long one!

The cabin stewards generally do a really good job of getting cabins turned around between cruises, and keeping them cleaned throughout.

I’m not going to say that they’re always perfect, but most people are happy with the work they do. And in general, cruise ship cabins are much, much cleaner than hotel rooms.

You shouldn’t need to pack your own cleaning supplies – and then trying to get the cabin stewards to leave your room alone so that you barely tip them isn’t fair.

cabin steward on a Carnival cruise

While it’s unfortunate, cruise ship crew rely on tips. Removing them to pay a pittance because you’d rather do their job for them is not helpful. You wouldn’t get in a taxi and tell them you’ll drive but will only pay a tiny portion of the fare!

9. How dare you not have country music!

Message: Just off the Jubilee. Amazed and sickened that there was no country Texas is the heart of America and mainstream country music.. I found it offensive to Texans and to the that there was no country band on the ship. It reflects badly on Carnival who are not as worried about pleasing us Texans. I reckon being an non-native John you will never understand. Come to Austin where word is spreading quickly that Carnival does not understand what their Texan customers want.

Carnival’s a cruise line that has to cater to a huge range of guests and they can’t have every type of music represented onboard.

I understand that the cruise line does sail out of Galveston but not everyone cruising from Texas is a Texan. A lot of people will travel to the port from across the US and further afield too!

So not having a country band onboard doesn’t reflect badly on Carnival, in the eyes of most people anyway.

Tesxas country music cuirse.

And if you really need a certain type of music to enjoy your cruise, there are plenty of themed music cruises you can book, including the Texas Country Music cruise!

10. Stop lying and sail to my schedule!

Message: We are sailing this Saturday from PC on Vista!!!!!!!. There is a rocket launch 4:45pm EST.-------asked you if the ship was staying to see this once in a life time event!!!! You said no because the ship needs to leave on time so as not to be late in port. LIAR! This is because you want to open the casinos !!! Stop with the lies. Let the ship stay and let everyone see what they want to see. Poll this Heald and see for yourselves. Nobody would even care if the ship was late to the island!!!

This person wrote to John to complain that the ship wouldn’t stay in port to watch the rocket launch from nearby – I’m assuming they were sailing from Port Canaveral.

Rocket launch at Port Canaveral

If you want to watch a rocket launch, I’d recommend going to a launch-watching site. Rockets are launched from Port Canaveral at least 50 times per year. If you want to enjoy a cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas, book a cruise.

You can’t do both – and you can’t expect a cruise ship to deviate from its schedule, pay loads more money in port fees and risk messing up its itinerary, just because you want to watch a rocket.

They aren’t lying. It’s not about rushing to open the casinos. They need to stick to their plan.

11. We’re not idiots – we demand harder puzzles

Message: On the Horizon now Heald. Maybe you think Carnival passengers are dim. We are not! The crosswords and puzzles at the coffee place are too easy. I subscribe to the NYT crosswords — provide us with more challenging options. IMHO I will not be the only one thinking this!

This one really made me laugh – I love it when people write such strongly-worded complaints over really insignificant parts of their cruise.

crossword puzzle

What do you think – should the puzzles and crosswords onboard a Carnival ship be more difficult? Or is this snooty person just thinking about themselves and not the wider range of guests onboard?

Also, you know they have an attitude when they address John as “Heald”.

12. You should pay for the bad weather

Message: We have winter weather across Florida today. Temperatures are in the 40s. We are on Freedom leaving today. Will Carnival give us any kind of credit for the bad weather. DH paid for our cruise to have sunshine not having to wear our Rokka&Rolla coats we will have to bring. We are in room ----. It is our anniversary cruise.

Guess what – the weather on a cruise holiday can’t be predicted. And so no, Carnival really won’t be paying out any kind of credit because the sun isn’t shining quite as much as you wanted it to.

couple on the beach

Can you imagine asking this of any other type of holiday destination, like a hotel? You absolutely wouldn’t – so why should a cruise line be any different?

13. We demand respect – we pay their wages!

“ Crew people should not be calling us by our first names. It is undignified to do this. This is why-----has a upscale passenger demographic. It is good and proper manners to refer to someone who pays the crews wages as Mr—or Mrs----.

Another guest here that compares Carnival to other cruise lines, completely unaware that Carnival is not trying to be the same as every other cruise line!

Carnival definitely has more of a fun atmosphere, but that doesn’t mean the crew onboard are disrespectful. A lot of the positive comments talk about how friendly the crew are, how they will remember your name and always greet you with a smile.

Carnival crew member

Now, does it matter that it’s your first name? If it does, and you insist on being called “Mr X” or “Ms X” then perhaps Carnival’s just not the cruise line for you?

Plus, the whole line about paying the crews wages is, in itself, so tacky.

14. I’m entitled to better treatment than this

John. When I cruise last month, I was so excited to be platinum with priority boarding and a stop in the Captain's Lounge if we had to wait until the ship was ready for boarding. I was expecting SOMETHING, ANYTHING a little special, but there was nothing. No TV, no beverage, no cushy seating and no food. I was first to board, so....... was I too early for the perks/special treatment? Thank you so much.

Guests who have reached a certain level of a cruise line’s loyalty program can sometimes act in a way that’s entitled. Not everyone, absolutely – but it’s definitely a recurring theme for some guests on social media.

This is just one example, where the guest expected special treatment above and beyond the standard perks they get for being Platinum, and they were annoyed that their boarding was not special because they were first on the ship.

Carnival platinum card

Look, if you’re first on the ship, you’ve already got the best perk there is! And remember that loyalty programs are meant to add a little extra, not define your whole experience.

15. I’m also entitled to special treatment!

Hi John - I was surprised on my cruise 2 weeks ago by being given a shiny diamond like s&s card with MILESTONE 25 on it. How disappointed I was by the end of the cruise that Carnival couldn't even do something like send a bottle of wine to dinner or a plate of cookies or something really cheap as a Thank You. It is clear that Carnival is doing everything possible to increase revenue but come on... what about those of us who made Carnival what it is today? A little gesture goes a long way. Just say'n.

Here’s another guest who complained about their treatment as a new Diamond member, expecting even more perks on top of those they were supposed to receive.

Carnival cruise diamond vifp card

“Those who made Carnival what it is today”? Loyal customers sometimes act like they’ve done the cruise line a favour by spending money on cruises, as if they didn’t get anything back in return!

Just say’n – your reward is all that amazing time you spent cruising!

16. It’s not fair that you have to set limits!

Why does Carnival offer a shore excursion with an age limit? We are 66, are experienced snorkelers and divers and in very good health. This is an insult, especially since we have a large, multi generation family on this cruise.

Of all the complaints on this list, this is one that I concede might be controversial.

The guest wrote to John to complain about the age limit on a more extreme snorkelling excursion, saying that they were too old for it at 66.

woman snorkelling

Carnival is a business and so it has to look out for the safety of its guests and, at the same time, make sure that any risks are carefully considered. So it’s understandable that it has to set an age limit for some excursions that could be dangerous for those who aren’t fit and healthy.

Absolutely, I can see that some guests who are over the 65-years age limit could be fit enough to tackle the excursion safely, but it’s not intended as an insult.

Particularly in countries like the US where litigation is common, the cruise line has to draw the line somewhere.

17. It’s your fault we spent so much money!

Message: Hey!!! Just got my monthly cell phone charges through and there are $470 worth of charges from my cruise on Carnival cruises Freedom. Someone told me that the cruise line should be responsible because nobody told us that we should have the phone in airplane mode or off. All he did was play games on the phone. My complaint is this… nowhere on the ship does Carnival highlight that there will be extremely high prices for using data at sea and EXACTLY what that cost is. The reason for this is that no one will use the service. One thing I do know is Carnival must be getting paid very well for this service at the expense of their passengers and they try to be a covert as possible with the pricing structure. We should be compensated. We spent $---- on the cruise. You should be worried about loosing face with me and everyone reading this if no compensation is given.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when you cruise is not turning off your data, and letting your phone rack up significant charges.

roaming charges on a cruise

This customer clearly thought that the cruise line should do a better job of telling guests this, but surely that’s as much your own responsibility too?

I’ve certainly never seen a cruise line try to be shady with this, and hide the fact that connecting to mobile data while at sea can cause you to incur hefty charges.

The cruise line should not compensate people for their own mistakes.

18. Bring back a class system onboard!

I think that there should be two split dining halls. One for those of us who uphold the cruise tradition of formal night. Only those men with a or long evening gown or cocktail dress for ladies would be allowed to be there. The other dining hall could be for everyone else where they can wear whatever they want! There is no reason I can see why this would not be popular John. We should not have to see jeans and t shirts and baseball hats. Let them eat with their own kind I say.

One of the topics that’s always guaranteed to be controversial on a cruise is formal dining night, and whether guests should adhere to a dress code or not.

There are plenty of people who like getting dressed up for fun, and those who prefer to keep it casual and dine elsewhere.

formal night on a cruise

But then there’s always the crowd you don’t just want to put their formal clothes on, but also expect others to follow the same guidelines. Apparently, it can ruin their night if they see others wearing non-formal attire.

This guest had an extreme plan of essentially bringing back a class system like you had on the old ocean liners like the Titanic. I can’t see it taking off on any cruise line, but Carnival? No chance.

19. Don’t let the riff-raff mingle with us!

Hey John. Platinum party question. The invitations say "And guest". I am Platinum and no one else in my family is. I will not ask if they can come and will go by myself. This is a stupid rule. If everyone brought a none P/D person, it would be way too crowded. It should be for those who are P/D ONLY.

Another one where people expect there to be a certain level of VIP access to parts of the ship. This guest received an invitation to a Platinum party, with the option to bring a guest.

They believe that this is dumb, and that only Platinum or Diamond guests should be allowed to attend – to the extent that they refused to invite a family member and decided they would go alone instead.

Platinum party

Not everyone wants to go to a party on their own, so surely having a few guests isn’t going to ruin the atmosphere, is it?

20. You expect us to dine next to the crew?

We do allow some of the offices and staff to eat on the Lido. And while a few people have been writing this morning to me saying they do not believe they should be allowed, I hope that many more will enjoy seeing them there and perhaps interacting with them. Thoughts please Cheers

Most of the time on a cruise ship, the crew will dine away from guests, in their own dining room on the lowest decks.

But sometimes some members of the crew will be able to dine in the public areas. Not always the formal sit-down restaurants, but absolutely in the Lido buffet.

Senior officers dining in the buffet

For 99.9% of cruise guests that won’t be a problem, but John did have to address the few people who wrote in to complain about it. How dare they have to sit next to the ‘help’!

21. Asking us to pay for our dinner is a cash-grab!

Message: I want to reserve dinner for all 5 of us at the steak restaurant on the Jubilee for my daughters college graduation cruise. I could not believe I was asked to pay upfront . I expect you will tell me that it is because a small percentage of passengers are no shows some of the time. Not my problem. Making us all pay upfront is insulting. This is an obvious money grab. Why should we have to do this? Nobody is OK with this.

This guest wanted to complain about being asked to pay for their steak meal upfront, even though they fully understood the reasons – sometimes, people will book this extremely popular venue and then no-show!

Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse on Carnival Horizon

I don’t understand how you can clearly grasp the reasoning – which is very valid (Carnival would lose a lot of money with an empty table of 5) – but then be insulted by being asked to pay.

Almost as if they were considering cancelling at the last minute…

Their assertion that “Nobody is OK with this” is clearly a lie because most people do pay upfront for their speciality dining.

Also, guess what – you can get a refund if you do cancel with enough notice. So it’s hardly the end of the world.

22. You aren’t spoiling us with hot chocolate!

Message: Hey question! Does Carnival not realize that many Americans are drinking hot chocolate instead of coffee?! On my cruise on Radiance there was of course the awful Nestle packets you could mix yourself at no charge (sh*t!!!!!!!!)...however the morning we were at Java café and they had hot chocolate. It was OK but not worth the price and there were no marshmallows!!!!!!! I am telling you that Carnival needs to get on this before they get left behind. Hot chocolate is the new coffee. Do the research. Get Swiss Miss or Ghirardelli!!!!!

This is another message for John where it’s not so much the content of the request, but the way that it’s made.

It’s fine for guests to ask John about Carnival expanding their hot chocolate ranges to potentially include more premium options. And yes, Ghiradelli is awesome.

coffee machines

But “I am telling you that Carnival needs to get on this”, and “Do the research” are just rude ways of speaking. Ask politely instead of being so shouty. It’s not assertive, it’s just not cool.

23. Why not change the itinerary to chase the sun?

Currently on the Liberty and this cruise has been absolutely awful. One sunny day the entire cruise. I know Carnival can't control the weather but instead of just sitting in a rainy port, why not find a sunny place at sea?

Another guest who assumes that their wishes are the same as everyone else onboard. Who cares that some people have pre-paid for excursions in port, let’s just ditch it and go sail into the warmer weather!

Carnival Liberty
Carnival Liberty

No – that’s not how it works, and you can’t just think that everyone feels the same as you. Cruise ships have to stick to that schedule and they aren’t going to go chasing the sun.

They’ll avoid dangerous storms, but a bit of rain? Just go grab a drink in an indoor bar. There are plenty.

24. You’re making me pack a pen?!

Message: Sitting here in room **** on the Valor. You need to tell people that Carnival has gone el cheapo and given us a pathetic pencil in the rooms. What is this BS????????? I now have to add a pen to my packing list?????????I hate pencils. My guess is a guest is less likely to take one as a souvenir which is why you did this right?????????????? .What happens when the pencil needs sharpening?????????? Do you expect us to go down to guest services for a pencil sharpener???????? Next we will be given the Big Chief tablets to write on that we had in the 3rd grade.

When was the last time you heard/saw someone say “What is this BS?????????” (nine question marks…) because they were given a pencil?

Carnival pen
No more pens?! That's it, no more cruising for me. Same here, I'm on the phone canceling my cruises as I'm typing this.

This is some serious anger over something so unimportant. It feels pointless. (Pardon the pun!)

25. I hope you have a serious illness!

Message: John, it is my wish that one day you have serious bad health and find yourself having to use a mobility scooter. This is a disgrace, and you are a disgrace.”

I had to save this one til last. What an insane comment to make!

There’s been a lot of controversy over the use of mobility scooters. Primarily it comes down to the rules that scooters can’t be left in corridors outside cabins – they need to be small enough to go into the cabin to be stored there.

A lot of mobility scooter users aren’t happy with this, but to actively wish illness or injury on someone like this is horrific. Only one person in this conversation is a disgrace, and it’s not John.

Final word

John Heald does an excellent job of handling the difficult questions and rude comments that get sent his way, and he’s got a great sense of humour.

It was a difficult week for me. There were some very disturbing comments about my intelligence, my ability to do this job and yesterday posts about my weight and appearance. So in full disclosure I want to let you all know that I went to see someone this morning. I’d lost self-confidence because of the put-downs and criticism so I made an appointment with a psychiatrist.I wanted to be honest and let you know.He told me not to worry about low self-esteem, saying " it’s very common among total losers like me. "Sticks and stones, sticks and stonesCheers everyone Oh FFS

I know that he’s made some comments before where guests have crossed the line to talk about his family, and that’s horrendous.

But when it’s just being rude to John himself, he seems to manage OK with turning it around into a joke – even if he sometimes has to let his alter-ego ‘Bob’ answer in his place.

Thankfully most people that message John aren’t quite this rude or expectant, and you can see more for yourself by following his Facebook page.

The Newest Carnival Ships (In Order)

There are 27 ships in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet in 2024 with more on the way. With new ships being launched at a rate close to one per year, it can be hard to keep track of which are the newest ships.

To further confuse things, Carnival has a practice of renaming some of its older ships after they have undergone renovations. Plus, the cruise line sometimes buys ships from other cruise lines and adds them to the fleet. So, not every new Carnival ship is actually new.

For example, Carnival Luminosa is a new addition to the fleet, but the ship sailed for Costa Cruises as Costa Luminosa since 2009.

In this guide, I’ll show you the newest Carnival cruise ships, including ships that are currently under construction as well as ships that have been renamed.

Newest Carnival cruise ships

The ships that will soon join the fleet…

First, let’s take a look at the newest cruise ships that will be added to the Carnival Cruise Line fleet over the next couple of years…

Carnival Adventure & Carnival Encounter – 2025

The first ships set to join the Carnival fleet are actually pretty old ships. P&O Cruises Australia will cease to be a brand in 2025, with one ship being sold and the other two joining the Carnival fleet instead.

Pacific Adventure will become Carnival Adventure and Pacific Encounter will become Carnival Encounter. The ships will be renovated ahead of their transfer, and will be similar sizes to the Conquest-class ships already sailing for the fleet.

TBC Excel Class Ships – 2027 & 2028

There are two more Excel-class ships scheduled to join the Carnival fleet, alongside sister ships Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee.

We don’t know much about these two new ships yet but they’re being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany and are set to join sometime in 2027 and 2028 respectively.

New Class – 2029, 2031, 2033

Carnival has announced it is working on a new class of ship that will be the biggest ever for the cruise line. Not quite the biggest in the world, but not far off with a gross tonnage of around 230,000.

The ships could accommodate up to 8,000 guests each which is a staggering number! Even if you don’t like the sounds of big crowds, it’s still very exciting to see what Carnival has up its sleeve for these brand-new ships when they launch between 2029 and 2033.

The newest ships already sailing

Carnival Firenze – 2024

In the spring of 2024, Carnival Firenze joined the Carnival fleet. The ship sails out of Long Beach, California, offering Italian-style cruising for American guests.

Previously known as Costa Firenze, this is also a Vista-class ship, and a sister ship to Costa Venezia, which joined the Carnival fleet a year prior.

Carnival Jubilee – 2023

Carnival Jubilee

The third ship in Carnival’s Excel Class, Carnival Jubilee, launched in 2023. This ship is almost identical to Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, and she sails out of Galveston, Texas offering week-long Caribbean itineraries.

This ship was originally ordered for German cruise line AIDA Cruises, but a change of plans by parent company Carnival Corporation means that Carnival Jubilee joined the main Carnival fleet instead.

This isn’t the first time that Carnival Cruise Line has used the name Carnival Jubilee. The original Carnival Jubilee was built for Carnival in 1986. The ship became the Pacific Sun for P&O Cruises Australia in 2004 before being scrapped in 2017.

Carnival Venezia – 2023

Carnival Venezia
Carnival Venezia aerial rendering

Carnival Venezia is the second ex-Costa ship to join the Carnival fleet, making her debut in May 2023. The ship has previously been known as Costa Venezia.

Redesigned to be more aimed at North American guests, this ship takes Costa’s original Italian style and has tweaked it to offer the service, food and fun that Carnival guests love.

Carnival Celebration – 2022

Carnival Celebration

A sister ship to the popular Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration made her debut on 6th November 2022.

The ship embarked on her maiden voyage from Southampton UK and I was lucky enough to be invited on board for a tour. Let me tell you, this ship is something special indeed.

Me on board the Carnival Celebration

Carnival Celebration cruises from Miami all year round, offering week-long cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Just like Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration has six different areas with various things to enjoy including the Bolt rollercoaster, the RedFrog Tiki Bar and Suess at Sea productions.

This is the second Carnival ship called Carnival Celebration. The first was built in 1987 and sold to Iberocruises in 2008 before being transferred to Costa Cruises in 2014 and finally being scrapped in 2021.

Carnival Luminosa – 2022

Carnival Luminosa
Carnival Luminosa in Brisbane

Costa Luminosa joined the Carnival fleet in September 2022, with the new name Carnival Luminosa.

Carnival Luminosa is a Spirit-class ship, similar to Carnival Spirit, Carnival Legend, Carnival Price and Carnival Miracle. She was christened in 2009, making her a few years younger than her classmates.

The ship sails out of Brisbane, Australia in the winter, offering South Pacific itineraries and out of Seattle in the summer, offering Alaska cruises.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is the only ship in the Carnival fleet whose name doesn’t start with the word ‘Carnival’. This could be because Mardi Gras actually means Carnival, so the ship would be called ‘Carnival Carnival’ if that were the case. And that would be weird.

Mardi Gras was the first Excel-class ship for Carnival and so she debuted some exciting new features such as the Bolt rollercoaster – an 800-feet-long ride that goes up to 40 miles per hour.

Launched in July 2021, Mardi Gras was Carnival’s first LNG-powered ship and the largest ship ever built for the cruise line.

Mardi Gras has won a host of awards including ‘Best New Cruise Ship of 2021’ in Cruiseline.com’s Member Choice Awards and ‘Best New Cruise Ship’ in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

As well as being the latest ship, Mardi Gras was also the name of Carnival’s first-ever cruise ship back in 1972. The original Mardi Gras was originally launched as a transatlantic passenger ship called Empress of Canada in 1960 before being acquired by Carnival. In 1993, the ship left the Carnival fleet and had several name changes before being scrapped in 2003.

Carnival Panorama

Carnival Panorama was launched in 2019 as the third and final Vista-class ship in the Carnival fleet. The ship was originally designed for P&O Cruises Australia but was transferred during construction.

Carnival Panorama features a Sky Zone trampoline park, the ShyRide aerial bike course and a Waterworks water park that was inspired by Shaquille O’Neal. The ship sails from Long Beach, California visiting ports of call along the Pacific Coast en route to Mexico.

Carnival Horizon

Launched in 2018, Carnival Horizon is a sister ship to Carnival Panorama and Carnival Vista. She sails out of Miami offering fun-filled Caribbean cruises.

There’s so much to enjoy on Carnival Horizon including an IMAX cinema, the Dr. Seuss WaterWorks splash park and the SkyRide aerial bike track. Meanwhile, adults can relax in the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat and the Cloud 9 Spa.

Renamed Carnival ships

Over the years, Carnival Cruise Line has renamed three of its ships. Each of these ships has undergone an extensive dry dock renovation. This means that the ship has been stripped back completely with brand-new features and decor added.

The ‘reimagined’ ships are as good as new, but as they were built over 20 years ago, they won’t be as large as Carnival’s new mega-ships.

Carnival Sunshine

Carnival Sunshine entered service in 2013. The ship was originally launched in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny.

Carnival Sunshine
Carnival Sunshine with the new livery

Carnival Sunrise

Carnival Sunrise was originally called Carnival Triumph. Launched in 1999, the ship was extensively renovated and renamed in 2019.

New pool deck on Carnival Sunrise

Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance debuted in 2021. However, before its makeover, the ship was known as Carnival Victory and was originally built for Carnival in 2000.

Carnival Radiance
Carnival Radiance

To conclude

Carnival Cruise Line launches new cruise ships at a rate of roughly one per year, with the oldest ships being scrapped at roughly the same rate to keep a consistent fleet size of over 25 ships.

While some new ships such as Mardi Gras and Carnival Jubilee were designed for Carnival, the cruise line sometimes takes on ships that were originally planned for other cruise lines in the Carnival Corporation. For example, Carnival Celebration was originally ordered for AIDA Cruises and Carnival Panorama was meant for P&O Cruises Australia before a change of plan.

Some of the new Carnival ships aren’t actually new, they’re renovated and renamed ships. While some of these come from within the Carnival fleet, the cruise line occasionally acquires older ships from other cruise lines too.

Princess cruises depart from 30 ports of call around the world, with the most popular being Fort Lauderdale in Florida, Southampton in the UK, Sydney in Australia and Yokohama near Tokyo.

The cruise line has a popular roster of itineraries in Australia with seven embarkation ports just for this destination, ahead of Europe (six) and just behind North America with 12.

Carnival Cruise Destinations

Carnival cruises depart from 21 ports, the most popular of which are those based in the United States. These include Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Port Canaveral, plus Galveston in Texas.

Popular destinations to travel to on a Carnival cruise include the Caribbean, where the highest concentration of sailings are, as well as the Bahamas, the South Pacific and Europe.

Which to Choose?

If you’re looking to cruise from the UK, you’ll find plenty of options with Princess Cruises departing from Southampton between March and November, whereas Carnival only has a handful of cruises departing from Dover, England.

Likewise, if you wish to cruise to exotic destinations such as Asia or the Pacific Coast, then Princess Cruises would be the cruise line to choose as these itineraries aren’t offered by Carnival.

But, if cruises from Florida to Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean are your bag, then Carnival has the best choice of itineraries.

Both Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise line offer cruises to their shared private island – Princess Cays. But cruisers should know that while the Princess Cruises drink package works on the island, the Carnival drink package doesn’t!

Carnival Cruise Line also has visits to a second private island in the Bahamas called Half Moon Cay. This is shared with Holland America Line.

Food

The food experience on both cruise lines is very different. For a more classic fine dining experience, you might find you prefer Princess, while Carnival is more casual with home-style favourites such as ribs and burgers.

Princess Cruises’ Food

Princess offers a sophisticated dining experience with an emphasis on authenticity and dishes made with local influences.

There are some casual dining venues, including the World Fresh Marketplace and International Café, as well as pizzerias, hot dog grills and coffee shops. However, the best cuisine will be enjoyed in the main dining venues and speciality restaurants such as Kai Sushi, Bistro Sur La Mer and the Crown Grill.

There are also experiential food encounters such as the Chef’s Table, which offers the opportunity to dine with the Executive Chefs and the Chocolate Journeys program, whereby you can sample the most exquisite chocolate works of art.

It’s widely believed that Princess Cruises offers ‘the best pizza at sea’.

Carnival Food

Carnival Cruise Line’s food is catered very much to an American market with dining venues including burger joints, chicken shacks and steakhouses.

Venues include pizza parlours open 24 hours, soft-serve ice cream at Swirls, grab-and-go burger places, Mexican cantinas, street food and the Lido Marketplace.

Carnival Celebration Restaurant

You’ll also find celebrity-endorsed foodie venues on board selected ships. Guy Fieri has several restaurants, including Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que, while Shaquille O’Neal is the face of the Big Chicken restaurant.

For something more formal, there are several speciality venues which are an additional cost. These include Emeril’s Bistro 1396 and Bonsai Teppanyaki.

Which to Choose?

If you love fine dining in glamorous restaurants then it’s clear that you’ll be much more suited to Princess Cruises than Carnival.

However, if you prefer to dress casually and devour endless burgers, hot dogs and fried chicken, then a Carnival cruise will be perfect for you.

Activities and Entertainment

Princess Cruises promises a wealth of activities to suit all interests aboard its fleet of ships, while Carnival caters more to family-fun and American-style experiences.

Carnival calls its ships ‘fun ships’ as there’s something going on at all times to keep guests entertained. Princess Cruises instead is more relaxed, though still offers plenty to do.

Things To Do on a Princess Cruise

Princess offers a wide range of daily activities including dance lessons, wine-tasting seminars, art auctions, world-class gaming in the casinos, shopping in the boutiques and taking a dip in the pools and hot tubs. There are also Movies under the Stars for outdoor cinema screenings, comedians and magic shows.

Entertainment is just as varied with performances from around the globe in state-of-the-art theatres. The cruise line also has its own version of The Voice, dubbed the ‘Voice of the Ocean’ where onboard guests can compete just like on the show!

Things To Do on a Carnival Cruise

A Carnival cruise brings plenty of fun from the start. Mini-golf, water parks and regular poolside competitions aren’t out of the ordinary daily. This continues well into the night as game shows, casinos, karaoke and live music brings exciting late-night activities.

A group fitness class on a Carnival cruise ship is in full swing, with participants smiling and engaging in exercises on blue mats. The room is surrounded by mirrors and bathed in natural light from the ceiling, enhancing the energetic atmosphere of the workout session at sea.

There are a few adrenaline-rushing activities too including the SkyRide, which is like riding a bike but on a track high above the ocean, the Bolt rollercoaster, and lots of incredible waterslides.

Which to Choose?

Young adults or those celebrating holidays like Spring Break will certainly prefer a Carnival cruise as there is literally non-stop fun. Older adults will definitely enjoy the sophisticated tranquillity of a Princess cruise.

For younger couples, it really depends on whether you like the loud, non-stop action of a Carnival cruise or prefer something a little more relaxing.

Kids Facilities

There’s something for children on both Carnival and Princess Cruises, depending on what experiences your kids are into.

Princess Cruises For Kids

Princess Cruises has some great educational offerings with their partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet. Families can enjoy shore excursions that cater to enriching experiences as well as the chance to meet local animals and take part in themed activities with experts.

Kids club room on Princess Cruise Line, featuring colorful sofas and a large TV where children are playing video games. The room has modern design elements with illuminated green accents on the walls, creating a fun and engaging environment for young passengers.

In the kids’ clubs, children are grouped by age, with rooms for 6 months to 2 years, 3 to 7 years, 8 to 12 years, 13 to 17 years and 18 to 20 years. These are all hosted by specially trained staff and bring opportunities for kids to meet new friends and enjoy memorable experiences while sailing.

There are dining events exclusively for children. Here, they can sit with their new-found friends, supervised by Princess’ youth staff. There are also pizza parties and ice cream parties on numerous occasions during each cruise.

Princess’ Camp Discovery

Carnival Cruises For Kids

There’s plenty for the kids to enjoy on a Carnival cruise from waterslides, mini-golf and live entertainment as well as all-day youth activities.

Camp Ocean children's play area on Carnival Horizon, featuring ocean-themed decor with sea creature illustrations, play structures, and a whimsical, underwater ambiance.

Carnival’s kids’ clubs have three programmes available: Camp Ocean for those aged 2-11, Circle ‘C’ for those 12-14 years and then Club O2 for 15-17 years.

The cruise line’s WaterWorks on-board water park is great for all ages and includes racing slides and interactive splash zones. There are also video arcades for a bit of competitive fun and a Build-a-Bear workshop!

Carnival’s waterslides

Carnival has a partnership with Dr Seuss, with the Dr Seuss at Sea programme. This includes the Seuss-a-palooza Story Time for the youngsters, the Seuss-a-palooza Parade where beloved characters march through the ship, as well as gatherings for arts and crafts and a special breakfast of Green Eggs and Ham.

Which to Choose?

There’s no denying that Carnival cruises are fantastic for kids. They’re sure to never be bored with non-stop fun and action. But obviously, that’s not for everyone.

If you have younger kids who can’t yet join in with all of the activities, or quiet teenagers who prefer chill-out time to non-stop partying, then a Princess cruise would also be a good option to consider.

Price

The price points for both Carnival and Princess Cruises are very similar, though this depends on where you want to travel and when.

The Price of Princess Cruises

The average 7-night Caribbean cruise with Princess in a Balcony stateroom costs $1,153 per person.

On top of that, you’ll need to budget $112 per person for gratuities and an extra $525 per person if you want a drink package for a total cost of around $1,780 each.

However, you should definitely consider Princess Cruises’ special Princess Plus or Princess Premier Fare‘. For just $60 per person, per day, you’ll get a free drinks package, unlimited wifi and pre-paid gratuities all rolled into one to make your cruise all-inclusive!

The Price of Carnival Cruises

The average 7-night Caribbean cruise with Carnival in a Balcony room costs $963 per person.

This doesn’t include any additional extras, which would need to be added in separately, including $112 for gratuities and $420 for the drinks package. So the average total cost would be around $1,485 per person.

To work out whether the Carnival drink package is worth it, take a look at my Carnival drink package guide.

And if you’re wondering about WiFi, here’s how much Carnival WiFi costs.

Which to Choose?

Carnival cruises usually come in slightly cheaper than Princess cruises.

If you’re on a budget and live in the US, you’ll find some really cheap deals on short cruises departing from Florida.

However, for those living in the UK, you may find that Princess Cruises are cheaper for you, especially as you don’t need to fly and you can save with Princess Plus if you want an all-inclusive cruise.

The Verdict

It’s clear there are some major differences when comparing Princess Vs Carnival. Which is better depends very much on what experiences you’re looking for on your next cruise.

Princess Cruises is a sophisticated cruise line with exquisite food, high levels of service, and plenty for all the family to enjoy. Meanwhile, Carnival is catered to family fun with an American feel and itineraries highly concentrated in the Caribbean.

If you’re looking for something for the kids, Carnival is a great option to keep everyone happy. If you’re seeking something a little more grown-up in elegant surroundings, Princess is ideal.

Toilet Mishaps, Racism & Broken Fingers

Even loyal cruise fans know that not every sailing goes to plan.

In fact, the most loyal cruise guests have often cruises so many times with a cruise line that they’re bound to have had the occasional bad experience.

Worst Carnival Cruises

So it’s no surprise that a group of Carnival cruise fans who are members of the VIFP loyalty program have some crazy stories to tell about their worst cruises.

Remember though that these are the loyal Carnival fans – so the cruise line must be doing enough right that these stories don’t put them off!

1. Racism from other passengers

One passenger explained how they’d experienced racism on their Carnival cruise – and that’s no doubt one of the worst experiences anyone could have onboard.

They clarified that it was racism from other passengers that spoiled their cruise, not from the crew or anything like that – which is still bad enough. To have other cruise passengers mistreating you because of your race must be horrendous.

Carnival cruisers of different races

Just to make it even worse, the person who claimed to be a victim of racism then had to argue with someone on Facebook who claimed it wasn’t racism after all – and that claims of racism are thrown around too often!

Carnival is a diverse cruise line that welcomes passengers from a lot of backgrounds and I believe that most have a great time without being the victim of racism, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen for this passenger.

2. Being exposed by automatic toilet doors!

Something completely different now, and a recurring complaint related to the public bathrooms on the newest ships in the fleet (Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee).

me too !!! Lololol so my husband and my son went into the family one on the Jubilee, I was sitting down and my husband couldn't figure out the lock. I sat down thinking it was locked. The toilet was directly in front of the door. 30 people walked by and a worker laughed at me..I just sat there with my towel over my lap. 🤣🤣🤣 was sorta embarrassed. Got over it. Lol never again!

The problem with the public bathrooms on these ships is that the doors use automatic locks… and not everyone can figure out exactly how they work!

The result is a number of people who’ve ended up getting ‘exposed’ as someone else opens the door, leading to some embarrassing situations!

A lot of people who’ve been caught have now decided they’d rather trek all the way back to their cabin even when they’re enjoying the entertainment, just to avoid the risk of having the door open on them.

Surely bathroom doors shouldn’t be this complicated?

3. Injuries

Some of the worst stories are related to injuries suffered onboard.

The balcony door closed on a finger and broke it.

There are lots of different stories that people have shared, including being injured by a waiter dropping a tray onto their hand, or falling down the stairs when wearing high heels (even when not drunk).

Accidents do happen on cruises, especially when you’re around a lot of guests who might be enjoying a drink or two. Make sure you’re careful, because the medical costs onboard can be quite high!

4. Hookups gone wrong!

A couple of passengers have talked about how their cruise took a wrong turn when ‘interacting’ with other guests.

Thinking a had a cruise bae only to find out cruise bae was married and no, his wife was not down with the upside down pineapple coalition

This passenger spoke about how they thought they were having a successful cruise romance until they discovered that the guy was married and that they were not swingers – the wife was less than pleased to discover what had been going on!

Suggested read: The Secret Meaning Of An Upside Down Pineapple

Carnival is a great cruise line for singles who want to meet new people either for short-term fun or long-term romance, but try to make sure you’re flirting with someone who is definitely unattached!

5. Passenger complaints about a disabled child

Carnival has a great reputation for welcoming all guests and accommodating those who have particular needs or disabilities.

It’s a shame that not all Carnival guests are quite as welcoming…

A woman at the buffet complaining to me about a special needs child being overwhelmed and flopping near the buffet. Saying people should bring those on vacations. Yeah, she was talking about my son. I was pissed. She made a comment about the parents and I informed her I was his mother.

Imagine feeling so offended by a child being overwhelmed that you moan to other passengers and try to say they shouldn’t be allowed onboard!

Are cruises only for those without disabilities now? An awful experience for this passenger and I’m glad they stood up to the person complaining.

6. Hitting the drink package limit too early

If you buy the drinks package on a Carnival cruise, you can enjoy as many drinks as you like without paying for them individually.

Well, maybe not as many as you like…

Reached my drink package 15. At 7pm every day of a 8 day cruise

There’s a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per day, which for most people is not going to cause them any problems. 15 is quite a lot! But this passenger claimed that it spoiled their cruise because they were getting cut off by 7 pm on every day of their cruise.

Maybe pace things a little more during the day?

7. The Triumph fire cruise

It’s over 10 years since the Carnival Triumph’s famed ‘Poop cruise‘ and yet it’s still one of the most talked about topics when someone asks about the worst cruise ever.

It’s understandable though – it was hardly a pleasant experience.

If you don’t know about the poop cruise, what happened was the Carnival Triumph suffered an engine room fire in 2013 which took out the power, including the air conditioning. It also affected the plumbing.

This meant that the ship was stranded without propulsion, and with no working toilet system. As you can imagine, the conditions soon became unsanitary for everyone onboard.

Carnival made good by refunding everyone, paying $500 in compensation as well as offering another free cruise, but those who were onboard describe it as hell. Still, many people knew it was a one-off and have since sailed with Carnival again!

8. Hurricanes and storms

Lots of people blame hurricanes and storms for their worse cruises.

My husband and I went on a cruise during hurricane season about 6 years ago. The good news our cruise was extended by 3 days due to not being able to port. The bad news the seas were so rough and I have horrible motion sickness. Shows were cancelled, people were puking all over the place in the elevator and in the halls….it was terrible!

It’s understandable – you can’t control the weather, but it can completely spoil all the plans you had for a nice relaxing sailing.

Tropical hurricane

Even if you don’t get rough waters, it can mean that your itinerary is completely changed at the last minute, and you might not even get to visit any ports – it could be a cruise that just has to dodge storms at sea.

Many of the people who’ve complained about stormy cruises rant about losing money, so make sure you’ve got suitable cruise travel insurance with missed port cover, especially if you’re taking a Caribbean cruise during hurricane season.

9. Party neighbours

One of the best bits of advice I always give when choosing a cabin is to make sure you’ve got other cabins directly above and below you, and on either side.

That’s because normally that will mean less noise – but not always…

Having to call security every night as my neighbor wanted to listen to music on a speaker at 2am. EVERY NIGHT!!!

There are noisy parts of the ship such as crew work areas, the pool deck or the bars, and that sound can carry through the walls or floor. But you really shouldn’t be dealing with neighbouring passengers causing a disturbance too.

If you’re having to call security every night, then security aren’t doing their job properly. Thankfully these types of story are rare!

10. Stabilizer failures

A few people have mentioned their worst cruise experiences being when ship stabilizers failed – and it’s happened more than once.

Notable incidents have occured on several ships including Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Liberty, with the video above apparently on Carnival Legend.

It can be scary – so I can totally understand why some people would rank this as their worst experience. But it’s not like a ship is suddenly going to tip over.

I do love that the people in the restaurant thought that moving from one side of the ship to the other would help. Trust me, the weight of the people onboard a cruise ship is pretty negligible compared to the weight of the ship itself!

11. Sickness!

There’s nothing worse than getting so excited for a cruise (or indeed any type of holiday) only to lose some of it to sickness.

Getting really sick on the 3rd day of an 8 days cruise . Only got to the see the inside of my cabin for the rest of the cruise

Lots of people have blamed the issues in 2020 for their worst cruises, but there are plenty of people who get sick on cruises at regular times too.

It’s not helped by unhygienic passengers who can’t even be bothered to wash their hands properly, or sneeze into their elbow. Basic rules!

handwashing station at cruise ship buffet

Again, you might be able to get some money back if you’re sick on a cruise and quarantined in your cabin. Hopefully, it never happens for you but there’s always the possibility.

Suggested read: Cruise Ship Norovirus Statistics & How To Avoid Sickness

12. Breakups at sea

A breakup on holiday is awful. But it’s even worse on a cruise because you’ve no way of easily escaping each other!

Well….I went on my first cruise about a month ago on Jubilee with my THEN boyfriend. He broke up with me on the first sea day. So staying in a room with someone you’d rather never see again wasn’t ideal. BUT….my response to him was ,”Well okay! I’m gonna enjoy my SOLO cruise! Thanks for buying it!” And I skipped on out the door to the deck party!

Cruise breakups can happen, and there were a few people in the Carnival group who told similar stories.

couple not speaking on balcony of a Carnival cruise

Whether that’s because arguments can become fueled by booze, or just the nature of being on a ship and feeling like you can’t escape each other. Or maybe someone had a wandering eye, seeing all the people by the pool…

If you’re lucky, you might be able to pay for an additional cabin if you’re already onboard and explain your situation, but many cruises will sail sold out so if you do break up, you might be stuck together. Try to stay on each other’s good side!

13. Random food sharer

Whether or not this is worthy of being the “worst cruise ever”, I don’t know. But it’s definitely weird and a bit gross.

I was taking a burger and fries back to my room when some random girl on the elevator started eating my fries off of my plate!

Having random people steal food from your plate is NOT common on cruises, don’t worry!

A casual dining scene on the Costa cruise ship with a paper box of golden French fries open beside a small container of ketchup, and a 'The really Italian street food' paper bag on the table, with the ocean view in the distance.

It’s not clear whether it was a child stealing food, or a grown woman, but either way it’s something that you should nip in the bud. Tell them no, and then feel free to go grab a new plate.

Chalk it up to a weird random experience, and try not to let it spoil your mood!

14. Accidentally flashing the crew

Are you the kind of person who lets embarrassing moments live on long in your memory?

We were docked in Port, and I went into my room to put on a bathing suit. I was bending over with my big old butt with my business up in the air, when one of the guys came through The balcony. They were out there doing Windows. Thought I would die of embarrassment. I felt sorry for the kid. He was more embarrassed than I was

The fact that this cruise passenger still tells the story as their worst cruise experience ever shows that it’s stuck with them – and maybe it has stuck with the crew member too!

Balcony on a Carnival cruise ship

Embarrassing moments can happen anywhere but don’t worry – you won’t typically find the crew in your cabin doing cleaning so the chances of you experiencing something like this are slim to none.

15. When EVERYTHING goes wrong!

This poor passenger!

My honeymoon. Someone went into labor and we had to divert from Turks to Nassau. Someone passed away. Went through two tropical storms so many were sea sick, a huge 15 person fight broke out, two people got left in DR, someone was smoking so much weed they thought a cabin was on fire. Went through a tropical storm on our way back so more sea sickness. Debarking took four-five hours because the cops had to arrest and interview people in the fight and the weed smokers, and then the escalators broke in the terminal so it took longer for people to get out and the next cruisers were delayed significantly. It was wild. Definitely memorable and we had friends with us that made it worth wild but definitely not ideal.

When something goes wrong on any type of holiday, it can then feel like everything is going wrong. But I think for this passenger it really was. This isn’t a negative attitude – that’s a seriously long list of unfortunate occurrences.

It seems like they still were able to enjoy their honeymoon cruise thanks to their friends, but trust me – most cruises aren’t the catalogue of horrors that this person experienced!

Couple and friends on a Carnival honeymoon cruise

16. When the cruise ends

The most common comment on that Facebook group about the worst cruise experience was that the cruise ended – and I think that shows that even bad moments can’t put off loyal cruise fans.

Plenty of people joked about how they were forced to get off the ship at the end of their itinerary and how it was unfair that they were surprised by this ‘debarkation day’ that crew were talking about.

Luggage on cruise ship at disembarkation

But the fact that so many people made similar comments show that people really do enjoy being loyal to Carnival because of the great times they have onboard.

Final word

Carnival is not a cruise line for everyone. It has a lively party atmosphere, it’s very bold and loud at times (especially during deck parties), and it’s very much aimed at the American market.

But if you’re the kind of person who would fit in on a Carnival ship, there’s a good chance you may want to stay loyal – even though it’s clear that bad things do sometimes happen.

That’s the same on any cruise line though. In fact, I know there are some cruise lines where bad experiences might be more common!

Just know that most people on a Carnival cruise – or any cruise – have an amazing time, and roll with the punches if something does go wrong. It shouldn’t spoil your cruise, and if it does, there’s always the next one!

19 Best Carnival Drink Package Tips (2024)

Carnival drinks packages are super popular, but as well as the perks, there are some pitfalls. Before you cruise, be sure that you know this essential info to avoid any hidden charges.

Carnival cruise drinks

1. Purchase the Cheers package before your cruise to save 10%

When planning your Carnival cruise, it’s a good idea to purchase the Cheers drink package in advance. Doing so will net you a $5 per day discount compared to purchasing it onboard. It’s a no-brainer!

Buy on website Buy on ship
6 days or more $70.74 $76.64
5 days or less $82.54 $88.44

2. Compare the cost of a drink package vs. paying for individual drinks

Before opting for any package, do the math. Consider how many drinks you might consume daily and compare that with the cost of the package.

Sometimes, if you’re a light drinker or particular about your drink choices, paying as you go might be more economical.

You can see Carnival’s drinks menus and prices here. But if that sounds like too much hard work, just use my free drink package calculator. It’ll do the sums for you.

3. If you don’t drink alcohol, don’t get the Cheers package

The Cheers package is best suited for those who enjoy both alcoholic and speciality non-alcoholic beverages. If you mostly drink sodas, the Bottomless Bubbles package will probably be a better fit.

It’s virtually impossible to get your money’s worth from the Cheers package if you don’t drink alcohol.

women having drinks on a Carnival cruise

4. Don’t worry about the gratuity!

The cost of Carnival’s drink packages used to be advertised without the gratuity, so they looked a lot cheaper – the lowest price was from $59.95 per day.

However, laws changed in early 2024 which meant that cruise lines could get in trouble advertising prices without extra fees included in certain US states. For ease, they just decided to update all of their prices to include the gratuity.

So the prices above are the prices you’ll pay – there are no extra fees on top that you need to worry about, like there would’ve been previously.

Carnival guest services

5. Be aware of local taxes when in US waters

When you use the Cheers package while the ship is docked or in US waters, local state taxes may apply. This is usually an extra 10% on the price of each drink whether you have the package or not, so you’ll want to be mindful of this while budgeting.

6. Don’t go crazy on the first night if you’re sailing from Texas or New York

For cruises departing from Texas or New York, the Cheers package isn’t activated until the second day. So, pace yourself on the first night, as any drinks consumed will be charged individually.

Sure, have some drinks and a good time. But know that if you decide to drink 15 beers on the first night, your bill will be about $120. And that’s a lot more than the package.

Carnival ship sailing out of New York

7. Discuss with the people in your stateroom before you buy

If you want the Cheers package, then every adult in the same stateroom must purchase the same package. It’s crucial to discuss with your roommates and ensure everyone is on board with the idea before purchasing.

8. Don’t share drinks

Sharing is caring, but not when it comes to the Cheers package. Sharing drinks can lead to potential penalties, including the possible deactivation of your drink package without a refund.

Sharing drinks on a Carnival cruise

9. Know exactly what’s included in your package

The Cheers package includes:

  • Cocktails
  • Spirits
  • Beer by the glass
  • Wine by the glass
  • Sodas
  • Zero-proof frozen cocktails
  • Energy drinks
  • Milkshakes
  • Smoothies
  • Juices
  • Specialty coffees
  • Hot tea
  • Bottled water (500ml)
  • Other non-alcoholic bottled drinks

The Bottomless Bubbles package includes:

  • Fountain soda by the glass (16 oz)
  • Juice by the glass (10 oz)

If you order anything except for these drinks, you’ll have to pay for it. I’ll explain some of these that you may not have thought of further along in this guide.

10. Ask your room attendant to empty your mini bar

When you first board your Carnival cruise, you may be tempted to dive into the mini bar in your room. But, it’s important to know that the Cheers package doesn’t cover mini bar items. These drinks and snacks come at an additional cost, and they can quickly add up.

To avoid the temptation and any accidental extra charges, consider asking your room attendant to empty the mini bar on your arrival day. This will not only provide clarity on what drinks are covered under your package but also give you extra storage space in your cabin refrigerator. This comes in handy, especially if you’ve brought along beverages, like the allowable 12-pack of soft drinks or your bottle of wine.

cruise minibar

11. Try Carnival’s unique speciality cocktails

Carnival offers a range of speciality cocktails unique to the cruise line. With the Cheers package, make it a point to try them out. It’s a fun way to enhance your cruising experience. And if you don’t like one, it doesn’t matter, you don’t have to finish it!

Carnival ships have some really cool cocktail bars like the Alchemy Bar on Carnival Celebration or the Amari Bar on Carnival Venezia. So your cruise is the perfect time to try a cocktail that you’ve never had before. Like this pineapple rum negroni?

Carnival Venezia Amari Bar drinks Pineapple Rum Negroni with menu

12. Order wine by the glass

Wine is only included in the Cheers package if you buy it by the glass. So don’t order a bottle and don’t use the self-service wine machines either as these will be chargeable.

Guest drinking wine on Carnival cruise

13. Take advantage of the 25% discount on spirits, wine, or champagne over $20.00 and bottled wines

On some cruise ships, if you order a drink that costs more than the package limit you’ll have to pay for the whole drink. Luckily, that’s not the case with Carnival cruises.

If you’re looking to indulge in a high-end spirit or wine, the Cheers package offers a 25% discount for any beverage priced over $20. This is a great way to enjoy luxury drinks at a reduced price.

14. Don’t order fishbowls

Fishbowls or shared cocktails are not included in the Cheers package. Ordering one would mean paying for it separately, so it’s best to avoid them if you want to make the most of your package.

15. Avoid beverages sold in souvenir glasses

Drinks served in souvenir glasses come with an additional charge, even if the drink itself is included in the Cheers package. To avoid surprise costs, stick to standard glassware.

Carnival Cruise 50th Birthday beer

16. Know how to get around the 15-drink limit

If you have the Cheers package, Carnival limits you to 15 alcoholic drinks in any 24-hour period (6 am until 6 am). For most people, this isn’t a problem. But if you start the day with breakfast mimosas and move on to easy-to-drink beverages like bottles of beer, you may find that you want more than 15.

To prevent guests from consuming too much, Carnival’s system means that it’s not possible for them to serve you any more alcohol once you’ve had your 15 drinks – even if you pay for it.

But what if you want more than that? Well, one method that’s discussed on cruise forums is to wait until you get close to the limit, and then buy one of the larger drinks that’s not included in the package. This could be a bottle of wine, bucket of beers or a fishbowl.

17. Drink as many non-alcoholic beverages as you like

One of the benefits of the Cheers package is that non-alcoholic drinks are unlimited. This includes sodas, mocktails, and speciality coffees, allowing you to hydrate and enjoy a variety without worrying about additional charges.

18. Bring your own wine and soft drinks

Carnival allows each adult to bring one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne and/or 12 cans or cartons of soft drinks onboard. Even if you have the drink package, it can be a good idea to do this.

Remember, that the mini bar in your room isn’t included in the package. So if you want to enjoy a drink on your balcony or while getting ready to head out for the evening, it can be nice to grab something from the fridge in your room without having to go out and line up at a bar.

19. Ask the bartender or server for clarification on drink package rules you’re not sure

If you’re ever uncertain about what’s included in your package or have questions about specific drinks, don’t hesitate to ask the onboard staff. They’re there to help and ensure you have a fantastic cruising experience.

The Best Ways To Use It (2024)

When you take a Carnival cruise, you may find yourself with some onboard credit to spend. And you’ll want to know what you can spend this money on.

Onboard credit may seem like free money, and in a way it is, but it still makes sense to spend it wisely to get the most value from it.

Spending onboard credit on Carnival cruise

In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about onboard credit (also known as OBC). I’ll then list all of the ways you can spend it on your Carnival cruise. I’m starting with the best-value options but we’ll discuss all of them, including the ways that you’ll want to avoid.

What does Onboard Credit mean?

Onboard credit is money that is credited to your account for use during your cruise. On a Carnival cruise, your onboard account is called ‘Sail & Sign’. When you make purchases on the ship, these will be charged to your account. At the end of your cruise, you can settle your account with cash, a credit card or onboard credit.

How to get Carnival Onboard Credit

  • Booking deals – If you book your cruise during a promotional period, you can get between $25 and $1000 of OBC per stateroom
  • Price drops – If the price of your cruise drops after booking, you may receive the difference in OBC
  • Cancelled cruises – If your cruise is cancelled and you rebook for a later date, you may be given extra OBC on top of Future Cruise Credit (FCC)
  • Compensation – If something goes wrong on your cruise, such as if the ship has a technical problem, you may be given OBC by way of an apology
  • Shareholders – If you own at least 100 Carnival shares (AKA CCL stock), you will receive $50 OBC on cruises of 6 days or less, $100 on cruises of 7-13 days and $250 on longer cruises
  • Carnival Mastercard – When you use a Carnival credit card you’ll get Fun Points that can be converted into Carnival on board credit.
  • Military – Members of the US and Canadian armed forces may get $50 OBC per stateroom when booking certain cruises

The best ways to use Carnival Onboard Credit

When it comes to spending your onboard credit, some of the things that you can spend it on are better value than others. In fact, there are some things that will cost you more to purchase if you do so using onboard credit.

So, here’s a list of things you can spend your Carnival onboard credit on, from best to worst…

1. Gratuities

You can usually use your Carnival onboard credit to pay for gratuities (tips), so long as you haven’t prepaid them before you board the ship. However, onboard credit that comes from being a Carnival shareholder can’t be applied to gratuities.

Carnival chef

Carnival cruise gratuities are $16 per person per day for those staying in staterooms and $18 per person per day for those staying in suites.

I believe that paying gratuities is the best use of your onboard credit, as these tips are something that we all should be paying, and you don’t get any benefit from pre-paying or using another payment method aside from onboard credit.

At the end of your cruise, if you have leftover onboard credit, it will automatically be offset against any gratuities that you owe.

Here’s how much Carnival gratuities cost, per day, for each passenger aged two and over:

Cruise Duration (Nights) Standard Staterooms Suites
2 $32.00 $36.00
3 $48.00 $54.00
4 $64.00 $72.00
5 $80.00 $90.00
6 $96.00 $108.00
7 $112.00 $126.00
8 $128.00 $144.00
9 $144.00 $162.00
10 $160.00 $180.00
11 $176.00 $198.00
12 $192.00 $216.00
13 $208.00 $234.00
14 $224.00 $252.00

2. Specialty dining

You can use your Carnival onboard credit to book dining in speciality restaurants, but only if you make the reservation once you’re on board the ship. If you book dining using onboard credit, there’s a chance that your chosen restaurant might be full, so it’s best to do it as soon as you board.

Rudis Seagrill

Specialty dining on Carnival cruise ships costs from $6 per person for the Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, up to $150 per person for dinner at The Chef’s Table.

If you don’t normally go for speciality dining, then perhaps you should take advantage of your free onboard credit to treat yourself to a delicious meal.

Carnival cruise speciality dining costs:

Restaurant Price
The Steakhouse $38 adult / $12 child
Ji Ji Asian Kitchen $15 adult / $5 child
Cucina del Capitano $15 adult / $5 child
Bonsai Teppanyaki $32 per person
Rudi’s Seagrill $38 adult / $12 child
The Chef’s Table $75 to $150 per person
Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast $6 per person
Culinary Classes $30 per person

3. Spa access and treatments

If you never usually go to the spa on a cruise, then this could be the ideal way to treat yourself by spending any onboard credit that you have.

On Carnival cruises, you can use your onboard credit to buy a day pass to the Cloud 9 Spa for just $22, giving you access to the relaxation room, thermal suite, hydrotherapy pool, hot tubs, experience showers, steam rooms, saunas and hammam.

The Thermal Lounge

The spa facilities will differ depending on the ship, but each Carnival ship has a range of spa facilities for you to enjoy. You cannot book a Cloud 9 Spa pass before your cruise, only on board the ship.

The more days you book spa passes for, the cheaper it will be per day:

Cruise Duration Per guest from Per couple from
Day Pass $22 $44
2 Day Pass $30 $50
3 Day Pass $49 $79
4 Day Pass $69 $109
5 Day Pass $89 $139
6 Day Pass $109 $169
7 Day Pass $129 $199
8 Day Pass $149 $229
9 Day Pass $169 $259
10 Day Pass $189 $289
11 Day Pass $209 $319
12 Day Pass $229 $349
13 Day Pass $249 $379
14+ Day Pass $269 $409
Prices are based on North American cruises and may change.

You can also use your onboard credit to book spa treatments like massages, body scrubs, facials, acupuncture, botox, fillers, teeth whitening, hairdressing, waxing, manicures, pedicures and eyelash treatments.

Carnival spa treatment prices:

  • Massage – $103 to $209
  • Acupuncture – $169 to $699
  • Facial – $100 to $139
  • Hairdressing – $34 to $159
  • Nails – $41 to $111

On your daily planner, you’ll probably see special offers for discounted spa treatments at certain times. While cruise spa treatments can be expensive, if you book onboard at the right time, they can actually be very good value for money. Plus, Carnival’s spa treatments are cheaper than most other cruise lines.

4. Shore excursions

If you purchase Carnival shore excursions on board your cruise ship, you can use onboard credit to pay for them. However, you must arrange these at the shore excursions desk on the ship, not online before you board.

Carnival excursion

Carnival shore excursions range in price from $14.99 per adult for a trip to the Pirates Treasure & Shipwreck Museum in St. Thomas to $799.99 per adult for a helicopter tour in Iceland.

5. Photos

On Carnival cruises, there are photographers ready to take your photo throughout the cruise – when boarding, in the dining rooms and on the deck. There’s no obligation to purchase any photos, but if you wish to, you can use your onboard credit to buy photos.

Carnival photography

Photos are pretty reasonably priced on Carnival cruises, with prices starting at $11.99 for a small print and up to $299.99 for a package that includes a bundle of prints, a large wall canvas, digital copies and a calendar.

So, if you want to capture the memories of your special cruise forever, perhaps using some of your onboard credit on photography services would be a smart move.

6. Gift cards

Some cruisers have reported that they have been able to buy Carnival gift cards at the Cherry On Top candy store onboard Carnival cruise ships using onboard credit. This can be a way to extend your onboard credit so that you can use it towards another cruise.

Cherry on Top

Each Carnival gift card can be loaded with between $100 and $1000 and you can buy five per transaction. They have no expiration date, so you could save them for as long as you like before using them to pay for your next cruise.

People who have asked Carnival to clarify whether this is okay or not appear to have been given mixed answers about whether this onboard credit hack works. Some people have been told that onboard credit that was earned from rebooking a cancelled cruise cannot be used to buy gift cards, but other types of onboard credit such as from a price reduction or shareholders credit can.

As far as I have seen, nobody has reported being turned away from the candy shop for attempting to buy gift cards with onboard credit. So, if you want to use your onboard credit towards your next cruise, it’s probably worth a try.

You can find more info about Carnival gift cards here.

I also have this post about discounted Carnival gift cards that you may find interesting.

7. Shopping

On each Carnival cruise ship, you’ll find several shops selling souvenirs, jewellery, watches, clothes, accessories and liquor. You can use your onboard credit in any of these shops.

souvenir shop on Carnival ship

Purchases made at sea are tax-free, but that’s not to say that onboard shopping is any cheaper than it is ashore. Many items may still cost more because you’re essentially a captive audience so the prices of some items are inflated.

However, if you want to buy Carnival cruise souvenirs like Carnival-branded beach towels, bathrobes, t-shirts and toys, then onboard your cruise ship is the best place to do it, particularly if you have some onboard credit to spend.

Some popular souvenirs that you may be interested in include a Carnival-themed Monopoly game at $49.95, a Carnival windbreaker jacket at $39.95 or a Carnival mug at $14.95.

8. Drinks

You can use your Carnival onboard credit to pay for a Cheers drinks package or to pay for individual drinks that you charge to your onboard account. To use onboard credit for a drink package, you must wait until you’re on the ship to buy the package – you can’t use onboard credit if you buy the package before your cruise.

Carnival drinks

The downside to this is that the Cheers package is cheaper if you buy it before you board the ship. So, if you pay for it with onboard credit, it will cost you more.

Buy on website Buy on ship
6 days or more $70.74 $76.64
5 days or less $82.54 $88.44

So, on a seven-day cruise for two people, you would pay around $84 more if you buy your drink package on the ship with onboard credit than if you bought it in advance.

For this reason, it’s not a good idea to use your onboard credit to buy a drink package. But, if you don’t plan on getting a package and want to just pay for the drinks you have, then using your onboard credit for these would make sense.

When you receive your bill at the end of the cruise, any onboard credit you have will be automatically be offset against your bar bill.

9. WiFi

You can use onboard credit to buy WiFi on a Carnival cruise, but only if you wait until you board the ship to buy it. You will save 15% if you buy the WiFi package online before you cruise, so buying internet access isn’t the best use of your onboard credit.

Carnival wifi
WiFi Package Online price Onboard price Saving
Social $12.75 per day $15 per day 15%
Value $17.00 per day $20 per day 15%
Premium $18.70 per day $22 per day 15%

On a seven-day cruise, if two people wish to purchase the Premium WiFi package, you can save $46.20 by purchasing the package online ahead of time rather than waiting until you board the ship.

If you want WiFi, you should buy it before your cruise, rather than with onboard credit for the best price. The exception to this is if you only want to use WiFi for a few days, rather than the whole cruise. This is because single-day plans are only available to purchase on the ship.

10. Casino

You can use your Carnival onboard credit in the casino. There is a 3% fee to withdraw your funds at a table game, but no fee to withdraw at the slot machines.

Carnival casino

Some people wonder if they load $500 from their onboard credit into the casino, spin the slots a few times and then cash out, thereby converting their onboard credit into cash…

The official policy is that no, you can’t do this. Only the amount that you win can be cashed out, the rest would go back onto your account as onboard credit.

But in reality, it can be possible. Just play a few spins and ask to cash out and you likely won’t have any problems. Make sure you transfer it to the slot games, and not the table games, to avoid that 3% fee.

11. Bingo

Playing Bingo on a Carnival cruise can be fun, but cruise ship bingo is generally a bit of a rip-off and there are better ways to spend your onboard credit than by buying bingo tickets.

Bingo on Carnival cruise ship

On Carnival cruises, Bingo cards start at $10 each, although most people actually spend more than this as they get multiple cards. While in theory, you could win up to $5,000, this is very unlikely as it requires not only winning, but winning within a specified number of balls being called. The odds of this happening are tiny.

Many of the prizes at Carnival bingo aren’t cash, they’re things from the onboard shops like jewellery, spa services, free bingo cards and more onboard credit.

So, if you love bingo, sure, you can use your Carnival onboard credit to play and you’ll probably have fun. But for most people, there are better ways to spend your money on the ship.

12. Art

Most people only visit the art auctions on cruise ships for a free glass of sparkling wine. And you can bet that serious art enthusiasts and art investors wouldn’t purchase the art on a cruise ship either.

Carnical cruise ship art auction

So who does buy art at cruise ship art auctions? Usually, it’s people who have no idea what they’re doing, who get caught up in the excitement after a few too many glasses of free fizz!

You see, if you do your research, you may find that many of the pieces can be purchased for a fraction of the onboard price elsewhere. Also, you won’t actually take home the art you see on the ship – you’ll be shipped an identical copy from a warehouse on land.

So, if you want to spend your Carnival onboard credit in the art auction you can, but make sure you know what you’re letting yourself in for. The price of each piece can be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars and it’s probably not a great investment.

Things to know about Carnival’s Onboard Credit

1. There are some limitations

Carnival onboard credit can be used to purchase almost anything onboard the ship. The only things that you can’t use it for are medical expenses, additions like taxes and port fees and anything that you purchase before you board the ship.

2. You can check your balance

To access information about your onboard credit, you can refer to Carnival’s online portal or mobile app. Log into your personal account and you’ll find a dedicated section where you can view details about your remaining credit.

You may also inquire about their onboard credit at the Guest Services desk on the ship. The friendly staff members are always ready to assist and provide any necessary information regarding onboard credit balances.

3. Don’t use it? You’ll lose it!

If you don’t use your onboard credit during your cruise you will lose it. So you must spend it all before the end of the last night of your cruise to avoid wasting it.

Carnival’s terms and conditions state:

“Onboard credit is non-refundable, non-transferable and has no cash value. Any unused portion of the onboard credit will be forfeited.”

My recommendation

If you have onboard credit to spend on your Carnival cruise, then the wisest thing to do is first to put it towards gratuities, provided that you haven’t already pre-paid those. Work out how much you expect to pay in gratuities based on the number of guests in your room, your stateroom type and the duration of your cruise. Then subtract this amount from the amount of onboard credit you have.

This will leave you with an amount of onboard credit to spend on treating yourself. The best uses for any leftover onboard credit are speciality dining, access to the spa, shore excursions and photos.

You’ll also want to bring some cash as you’ll need this for things ashore. Take a look at my next guide to work out the best amount to bring: How Much Cash To Bring On A Carnival Cruise.

Carnival Cruise Suite Perks Explained (Is It Worth Paying More?)

On Carnival cruise ships the best rooms are suites. If you’re trying to decide whether to book a balcony room or a suite, you’ll need to know what are the benefits of a suite so that you can decide whether it’s worth the upgrade or not.

Some suites have much better perks than others, so this is also worth factoring into your decision-making.

Carnival Grand Vista Suite
Grand Vista Suite

In this guide to Carnival cruise suites, I’ll show you the amenities and perks that you get with each type of suite, as well as some perks that you might expect to be included, but aren’t.

Suite benefits explained

On Carnival cruise ships, suites have separate areas for sitting and sleeping. Depending on the suite, you’ll also get perks such as priority check-in, boarding and debarkation, your first choice of dining times and free laundry. Suites are served by only the best room attendants, so you can expect better service.

There are many different types of suites, and the perks you’ll get vary depending on which suite you book.

Carnival suite perks: here’s what you get!

On Carnival cruise ships, there are some suite perks that you can expect whichever type of suite you choose. These seven perks are the same whether you choose the cheapest suite, or the most expensive.

The cheapest suites on Carnival cruise ships are Junior Suites and these also include the perks. This is different to Royal Caribbean, as Royal Caribbean Junior Suites don’t include anywhere near as many perks as Royal Caribbean’s Grand Suites and above. Princess Cruises Suite perks also differ between Mini-Suites and Suites.

1. Guaranteed dining time preference

When you book your Carnival cruise you can choose from Early Dining at 5.30 pm, Late Dining at 7.45 pm or Anytime Dining, where you just arrive whenever you like between 5.30 pm and 9.00 pm. While Anytime Dining is great, you may need to wait up to 20 minutes for a table to be ready.

You can request your preferred dining time (Early, Late or Anytime), but this is not guaranteed for most guests. However, Carnival suite guests are guaranteed to receive their first choice of dining preference.

2. Priority check-in and express boarding

On Carnival cruises, suite guests have special check-in privileges. Your cruise documents will be stamped with ‘Priority’ and when you arrive at the port you can head to the Priority Lounge where you’ll be expedited through the check-in procedure as quickly as possible.

3. Priority debarkation

On Carnival cruises, suite guests are allowed off the ship first, both in ports of call and at the end of the cruise. In ports that require a water shuttle, suite guests have a priority service from ship to shore. For ports where the cruise ship docks, suite guests have a special priority line.

4. Free laundry

Suite guests on Carnival cruises may enjoy one free bag of laundry per person, per cruise.

While this seems like a good deal, the usual price for a bag of laundry to be washed and folded is only $15. If you want dry cleaning or pressing, you’ll have to pay extra for this, whether you’re staying in a suite or not.

Suggested read: Guide to Laundry on Cruise Ships

5. Free water

On Carnival cruises, each suite comes with two complimentary bottles of water.

While these are large bottles of water and it’s a nice touch, it’s not too expensive to order water from room service or from the bar. The tap water is also perfectly safe to drink.

6. Service from the best stewards

Only the best Carnival room stewards are allowed to service the suites. So when you stay in a suite, you can be sure that your room attendant has many years of experience and is the very best at their job.

You can therefore be sure that your suite will always be perfectly clean and that your room attendant will be eager to help you wherever they can.

7. Bathrobes

Carnival suite guests are given complimentary Carnival bathrobes to wear during the cruise.

A semi-secret Carnival cruise tip is that anyone can get one of these bathrobes, even in a cheap inside room! All you need to do is ask your stateroom attendant and they will bring you the bathrobe to wear with no extra charge (although you may want to tip them).

Typical suite perks that you WON’T get with a Carnival suite

There are some Carnival VIP perks that you might expect suite guests to be able to access. However, these are only for VIFP Diamond or Platinum loyalty guests or those that have purchased a Faster To The Fun package.

1. Priority luggage

Carnival Cruise Line has to process thousands of bags, delivering each one to the right stateroom. Guests with a Faster To The Fun package and VIFP Diamond and Platinum guests will get their luggage first, but suite guests are not prioritised.

2. First access to stateroom

There’s no guarantee that your suite will be ready for you as soon as you board the ship. You may need to relax in the ship’s public areas while you wait. If you want to freshen up as soon as you board and you’re not a VIFP Diamond or Platinum guest, you’d need to buy a Faster To The Fun package.

3. Priority line and dedicated phone number for Guest Services

On Carnival cruises, the guest services team can get very busy. There’s a priority line at the desk and a VIP phone number, but this isn’t for suite guests. It’s only for VIFP Diamond or Platinum guests and those who have purchased the Faster To The Fun package.

Faster to the Fun – unnecessary?

You don’t really need Carnival’s Faster To The Fun package if you have a suite, as many of the perks that you get with Faster To The Fun come for free with a suite anyway. The only real Faster To The Fun extras you get on top are first access to your stateroom, faster luggage delivery and a priority line at guest services.

Many of the Faster To The Fun perks like the first choice of dining times, faster check-in and boarding, priority water shuttles services and faster debarkation are things that you’ll already get with your suite.

So, you can get Faster To The Fun as well, but it’s probably not worth it.

Suggested read: Is Faster To The Fun worth it?

So, are suites worth the upgrade?

If you value the extra space, the separate sleeping and living areas and the extra perks, then an upgrade to a suite on your Carnival cruise can be well worth it. However, if you’re concerned about your budget, you should know that suites can easily cost twice as much as balcony rooms.

When deciding between a suite versus a balcony room on a Carnival cruise, it’s wise to take note of the difference in price, as well as learning exactly what you can expect for your money.

Savvy cruisers will also consider the cost of gratuities as well as the ticket price. On Carnival cruises, gratuities cost $18 per person, per day for suite guests and $16 per person, per day for everybody else.

Final thoughts

Carnival Cruise Line’s suites come with many benefits compared to balcony cabins. You’ll get upgraded amenities in your room like a bathtub, walk-in closet and separate living space. Plus, there are service perks like VIP check-in and water shuttles, so you can walk straight to the front of the line.

The perks vary depending on the suite, with Excel suites on the newest ships having the most perks of all.

6 days or more $59.95 $64.95
5 days or less $69.95 $74.95

Carnival’s alcohol drink package costs $59.95 per person, per day, if you buy it before your cruise or $64.95 per person per day if you buy it on board the ship.

For cruises of 5 days or less departing after December 1st 2023, the prices are $69.95 per person per day for advance purchases or $74.95 per person per day if you buy in on the ship.

You will also have to pay an 18% gratuity on top. When the ship is within US waters (docked in port) you will also have to pay an extra 10% sales tax on each drink.

For a 7-day cruise, if you pre-purchase your drink package, you can expect to pay $495 per person for drinks on your Carnival cruise including gratuities.

If your cruise departs from Texas or New York, state laws mean that you cannot use a drink package on the first day of your cruise. In this case, you will charge drinks to your account on the first day, and the Cheers package will start from 6 am the following day. You will not be charged for the first day.

Bottomless Bubbles Package

Carnival Cruise Line’s unlimited soda package costs $9.50 per day for adults and $6.95 per day for kids. There’s an 18% gratuity on top, plus a 10% sales tax on any drinks purchased while the ship is in US waters.

For a 7-day cruise, if you pre-purchase a soda package, you can expect to pay $ 78.47 per adult or $57.41 per child for unlimited sodas and juices, including gratuity.

They never go on sale – so don’t delay hoping for a discount

The Carnival drink packages never go on sale. The only way to get discounts on Carnival drink packages is to book it before you cruise. This will give you a $5 per day saving on the Cheers package compared to the price you will pay if you wait until you’re on the ship to buy it.

Technically you can use onboard credit, but…

You can buy a Carnival drink package with onboard credit, but it’s not recommended. You can only use your onboard credit once you get on board the ship, meaning that your drink package will cost an extra $5 per day than if you pre-purchased it.

If you want to use your onboard credit to buy the soda package, that’s okay, as the price is the same whenever you buy it. But if you want the alcohol package, you would be better to pre-purchase it before your cruise and save your onboard credit for something else.

Drinks prices – is it better to buy individually?

To work out whether a drink package is worth it for you, or whether you would be better off buying your drinks individually, you’ll want to look into the price of each drink, as well as which drinks are always free.

The drinks on Carnival cruises are reasonably priced and tend to be a little cheaper than other cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises.

The average cost of drinks on a Carnival cruise ship in 2024:

  • Cocktails: $10.50 -$12.50
  • Beer (16oz): $7.00 to $8.50
  • Wine by the glass: $9.50 to $14.00
  • Spirit and mixer: $7.50 to $15.00
  • Soft Drinks: $2.75
  • Specialty Coffee: $2.50 – $4.95
  • Energy Drinks: $4.95
  • Smoothies: $6.50
  • Bottled Water: $1.50 – $3.95

A good selection of free drinks is available

Carnival Cruise Line is pretty generous with the free drinks on offer in the main dining room, buffet and room service. The free drinks include water, lemonade, fruit juice, coffee, hot tea, iced tea, hot chocolate, milk and chocolate milk.

These drinks are free of charge in the main dining room and the Lido restaurant:

  • Non-bottled water
  • Lemonade
  • Iced tea
  • Hot chocolate
  • Hot tea
  • Regular and decaf coffee
  • Milk (regular or skim)
Free lemonade and iced tea

These drinks are available free of charge through room service:

  • Juices (orange, tomato, apple or grapefruit)
  • Coffee (regular or decaffeinated)
  • Hot tea
  • Iced tea
  • Hot chocolate
  • Chocolate Milk
  • Milk (regular or skim)
Coffee

Carnival Cruise Lines does not offer a coffee package. Speciality coffees are included in the Cheers drink package or can be purchased individually. Regular coffee is available for free in the dining room, buffet or via room service.

When you play in the casino on a Carnival cruise ship you’ll earn casino points. Once you have enough points you will get a ‘Drinks On Us’ card which gives you free drinks while you play.

You get one point for every $2.50 you play through the slot machines and you need 1500 points to get a Drinks On Us card. So, you’ll need to spend around $3750 in the Carnival casino before you start to get free drinks.

If you accumulate 5,000 points, you will get a Drinks On Us card to use on your next cruise.

As the drinks are only free while you’re actively gambling, in the time it takes between ordering a drink and being served it, you’ll likely spend more than the cost of the drink.

Water prices

On a Carnival cruise, you can order water to be delivered to your room. The prices are:

  • 12-pack of 500ml bottles: $14.95 (+18% delivery fee)
  • 1.5-litre bottle: $4.50 (+18% delivery fee)
  • 8-pack of 1.5-litre bottles: $24.95(+18% delivery fee)

The best value option is definitely the 12-pack of small bottles. You can purchase these before your cruise here: www.carnival.com/funshops

Don’t forget to bring your own

On a Carnival cruise, each adult can bring one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne in their carry-on luggage. Each person can also bring 12 cans or cartons of non-alcoholic beverages such as water, soda, energy drinks, juice or milk.

You can drink your own wine in your stateroom. If you wish to drink it in a bar or restaurant, you will be charged a corkage fee of $15 per bottle.

If you’d like to take a closer look at the Carnival drink menus from each of the bars and restaurants, you can see those here: Carnival Cruise Drink Menus 2024.

So, drinks packages – worth it?

Generally speaking, a Carnival drink package is worth it if you drink five or more alcoholic drinks per day. The unlimited soda package is worth it if you drink four or more sodas or juices per day. The exact number of drinks depends on what it is that you drink.

For example, if you drink mixer drinks costing $20 each, you will break even with your third drink. But with $1.50 bottles of water, it would take at least 40 to break even!

If you’re trying to make the decision of drink package vs no drink package, the easiest way to do this is with a drink package calculator. This will show you how much you can expect to spend with and without a package, based on the drinks you would have.

Carnival Drink Package Calculator

Just enter your email address and the free calculator tool will be sent straight to you.

Alternatively, if you mostly drink the same drink, then this chart will help you to work out how many drinks you would need to break even. The prices are based on a pre-purchase of the Cheers package.

As gratuities are added on to individual drinks or onto the package price (but not both), I’ve not included them in this calculation.

Carnival Cruise Drink Package chart – how to break even

Drink Price Drinks to Break Even
Cocktails $10.50 6
Beers $7.50 8
Wines $12.00 5
Sodas $2.75 22
Coffees $3.50 18
Energy Drinks $5.00 12
Smoothies $6.50 9
Water $1.50 40

With the Bottomless Bubbles soda package, it would take four sodas per day for an adult to break even and three sodas per day for a child to break even.
