I know that cruising can be a little intimidating for first-time cruisers.
While cruises share a lot of similarities with other types of holiday, there are a lot of differences too, including a few quirks. So it’s normal to be nervous before your first one.
I can offer my own advice, but i know I’m not the only expert, so I asked my Facebook fans for their own tips for first time cruisers, and this is what they came up with:
1. Ask Questions
Cruise ships are staffed by a fantastic crew, who are on hand to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible for you.
But they can only help if they know that you need something, so make sure to ask – whether it’s a question, or a request, anything. You aren’t being a burden unless you demand all their time, and they want to help, so don’t be shy – ask!
2. Be Open-Minded
I tell you what – some people love a good moan about cruises online!
One of the most popular comments that came up was to make sure you stay open minded about your cruise, and not to get bogged down by any negative comments you see on Facebook groups or forums.
Everyone has their own unique cruise experience, and even if you see a lot of people complaining about your chosen ship or itinerary, there’ll be even more people who love it, but they just aren’t as vocal online.
That open mind will make sure you look forward to your cruise and, once onboard, enjoy it fully.
3. Go with the Flow
It’s good to try to be flexible when you’re on a cruise holiday, and not overthink all the little details.
Itineraries can change, activities can be shuffled around or oversubscribed. There are a lot of moving parts – so try not to obsess over every minor thing. If you can adopt an easygoing attitude, you won’t be disappointed if plans do change.
That being said, it’s a good idea to prepare a little bit – like buying cruise insurance with missed port cover, so you can get a bit of money back if your itinerary is forced to change.

4. Relax and Don’t Overdo It
It’s easy to get carried away trying to do everything, especially on some modern cruise ships that are like floating cities. It’s impossible to fit everything in!
Remember to relax and take some time off to avoid returning home exhausted. Yes, have a lot of fun, but if you aren’t careful you’ll need a holiday to recover from your cruise.
5. Manage Your Finances
When you cruise, you’ll register your bank card or credit card to your cruise account, and then any purchases you make onboard will accrue on that, to be paid off on the last day.
Which means it’s easy to get a little carried away and accidentally overspend. Nobody wants their first cruise to end on a sour note with a huge bill.
Keep tabs on your spending, especially if you plan on visiting the casino onboard. If you plan on drinking a lot, consider a drinks package instead as it might save you money, plus you can pay for it in advance, which will help you to budget.
6. Pack Wisely
There are a few key tips when it comes to packing your clothes for your cruise, including making sure you’ve got some loose-fitting items – you will be offered a lot of food and you want to make sure you can really enjoy it!
Comfortable shoes are more important than fancy high heels for formal night, especially if you’re planning on taking a lot of excursions.
But the biggest tip is to finish packaging and then remove anywhere between 30-50% of what you’ve packed as you won’t wear it all – good advice! Obviously, you don’t want to be underprepared, but don’t pack so much that it’s an uncomfortable suitcase to lug around.
Without making this seem like an ego-trip, it was lovely that a few of my Facebook fans said that following experts like me could be helpful.
Lots of cruise experts create articles and YouTube videos covering every aspect of cruising – with our help, you’ll be able to find your perfect ship and make sure you’re fully prepared to cruise.
If you’re someone who tends to be late for things, maybe look at ways of managing that habit before your cruise.
Because on a ship that might be hosting thousands of guests, they aren’t going to wait around for one or two people who are delayed getting onboard. On embarkation day, or any day in port, if you miss the all aboard time then the ship will sail off without you.
If that means missing your cruise, you’ll be out of pocket – and your insurance will only cover you if it wasn’t your fault. If the ship leaves you stranded in port, then you’re responsible for either flying to the next port to meet it, or flying home and paying for your luggage to be shipped to you.
Just make sure you’re on time.
9. Bring Essentials
There are several must-have items that can really make the difference on your cruise. The main ones that keep being suggested are a power strip, a travel alarm clock, and sea sickness medicine.
Power strips are useful because a lot of ships (older ones especially) don’t have many outlets, so you may need one just to be able to plug everything in. Weirdly, it’s the safer surge-protected strips that cruise ships don’t like, so avoid those.
Travel alarm clocks are useful because you might not be able to plug your phone in next to your bed, and it’s handy to see what time it is without having to get up, especially in an Inside cabin where there’s no natural light to give you a hint. Plus you might need to set an alarm for excursions.
And yes, some people do get sea sick on a cruise. If you think you will, or you’ve no idea, pack medication just to be safe.
10. Do Your Homework
You absolutely can walk into a travel agency and tell them that you want to book a cruise, and then leave everything in their hands if you want your holiday booking to be easy.
But it still makes sense to do your own homework, because cruise ships are not all alike, and you need to make sure you find the perfect one for you.
Research the kind of atmosphere on the ship you’re looking at – is it favoured by an older crowd? Is it family-friendly? Or is it more of a party ship?
Check your dining options, the excursions you could book on your itinerary – look up everything, and this will help you find the perfect cruise. The wrong cruise could put you off cruising for life, so it’s important to at least know what you’re signing up for when you book on a certain ship.
11. Fly in Early
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning a cruise is to travel to the ship on embarkation day. To reiterate, if you’re late, the ship will leave without you and you will be out of pocket.
This is especially true if you’re flying to the ship. You should always aim to fly the day before, and book a cheap hotel near the port. That way, if something goes wrong with the flight, you’ve got wiggle room to hopefully still make it in time.
It’s also just less stressful. Going through a flight and then check-in on your ship on one day is intense – spreading it over two days, at a more relaxed pace, is often preferred.
12. Book Entertainment Early
A lot of the best entertainment options and excursions on a cruise will sell out fast, so it’s important to book early.
Many cruise lines will let you start booking things in advance of your cruise, but it varies by cruise line on how early you can – so make sure you check that when doing your homework.
If you miss out, don’t be afraid to go ask when you’re onboard – extra spaces are sometimes held back, or there might have been cancellations. If you really want to see a show and you haven’t booked, just turn up anyway, and they might let you in if there are spaces from no-shows.
While it is important to go with the flow, you should still try to book the things that you’re most interested in.
13. Download Deck Plans
All cruise lines publish deck plans for their ships – think of them as a map of each deck, showing you where each cabin is situated along with the elevators, the restaurants and more.
It’s a good idea to download the deck plans for your ship once you’ve booked, and start learning where things are. Some of the more modern cruise ships are massive, and you can get a little lost, even with all the signposting onboard.
The deck plans can help you to plan and familiarise yourself before you even set foot onboard, so it’s worth taking a look.
There are loads of online communities for cruising, where you can get to know other passengers, read their reviews, and ask any questions you might have.
Cruise forums are handy for this, but Facebook has tons of groups too. Sometimes they are for cruise lines or specific ships, but often people will set up a forum thread or Facebook group for a specific sailing too.
These can be useful if you’re looking to chat to others onboard – you can get to know them in advance and maybe even make plans to meet up for a drink.
Just be careful in these groups, because people tend to be more negative online. Don’t panic if you see a lot of bad reviews, as often those who’ve had a good time are too busy booking more cruises to leave their positive feedback.
15. Stay Safe and Be Prepared
A little bit of common sense goes a long way on a cruise, both when you’re onboard and especially when you’re exploring a port of call.
Make sure you take simple precautions to stay safe. Always carry the phone number for the ship with you when you’re ashore, so you can contact the crew if you have a problem. You’ll find it on your daily program, so take that with you.
Don’t wander away from main tourist areas, and make sure your phone is always charged. Incidents of anything bad happening are extremely rare, but it’s better to be prepared just in case.
16. Bring a Good Book
While cruises do have a lot of activities to offer, there will also be plenty of downtime – you can unwind by the pool, in your stateroom (or on your balcony, if you have one), or in a snug little corner of a bar or lounge.
So bring a good book, if you’re a reader. A lot of people suggest this, and it is lovely to just chill with a novel by your favourite author as the world slowly sails by.
The first thing you’re going to want to do when you get home from your first cruise is book another – and if you’re starting from scratch with your budget, you might need to look at dates further out to give yourself time to save up, and you might be impatient!
If you can save for your second cruise before you sail on your first, you can feed your new addiction a lot sooner! And it’s not like you need to book, so if you decide cruises aren’t for you, you’ve just got a pot of money to put towards a different holiday instead.

There are a lot of different stateroom types on Carnival cruise ships, and a lot of different locations on each ship that you can choose from.
I don’t think that there’s such a thing as a bad room on a Carnival ship, but there are definitely some that are better than others. And there are some that might be someone’s idea of heaven, but someone else’s worst nightmare. Well, maybe not that bad, but definitely not to their taste.
With that in mind, here are 16 Carnival cruise cabins that you might want to avoid when booking your next cruise…
1. Rooms above the nightclub, theatre or atrium
Choosing a room directly above the theatre or the nightclub is a risky move, especially if you’re someone who likes to get an early night ahead of the next day’s activities. When you’re directly above these venues, some noise (or vibrations) can come through the floor, causing a bit of a disturbance.
On most Carnival cruise ships, the theatre is at the front of Deck 5 while the nightclub and lounges are towards the aft of the same deck, so it’s Deck 6 that you may want to stay away from. The new Excel-class ships are different, with those venues on Deck 7, so make sure to avoid Deck 8 on those ships.
You’ll also find DJs playing sound music in the atrium on many cruises. Again, this is on Deck 5 in most ships, but on the Excel-class ships, it extends right up to Deck 8, so Deck 9 mid-ship is the spot to avoid if you like to go to bed before the party finishes.
2. Rooms directly below the Pool Deck
It’s essentially the same problem as having a room above the nightclub, but in reverse. You’ll want to avoid a room directly below the Lido pool area if you’re someone who likes to sleep in during the mornings.
The reason for that is deck chairs – they’re surprisingly loud when they’re dragged across the deck, and you’ll likely get a rude awakening as some early birds try to reserve their spot.
This is a problem on all Carnival cruise ships, so check the deck plans to see where the pools are (because some ships have multiple) and then avoid a cabin directly below if you plan on having some lazier mornings.

3. Interior upper/lower cabins
Interior Upper/Lower cabins are some of the smallest in the Carnival fleet. They’re also the only rooms that don’t come with two twin beds as standard. Instead, you get a single twin bed and then either a sofa bed or a Pullman bed for a second guest.
They’re compact and space-saving, which is great if your budget is tight and you want to spend more of your money on the other parts of your cruise holiday.
But, if you’re cruising with your partner then you have to accept that you won’t be sleeping next to them. And even if you’re cruising with just another adult and would normally enjoy twin beds, you may find the second bed to be uncomfortable.
Interior Upper/Lower cabins are a type of Interior room that’s available on most of the Carnival fleet, except for the Excel Class and the Spirit Class ships.

4. Junior Balcony Cabins
Speaking of rooms designed to be space-saving, a Junior Balcony is another option that may leave you feeling a little bit cramped.
These rooms are the smallest of the Balcony cabins. The actual balcony is the same size as a standard Balcony cabin’s room, but the room itself is significantly smaller.
I love Carnival’s spin on it – “you’re just a few steps from your balcony” – that’s some great silver lining talk. And for a lot of people, it won’t be an issue if you tend to pack light or spend little time in your room.
But, if you don’t want to feel like you’re in a box room, then you might prefer to look for a standard Balcony or bigger.

5. Porthole Cabins
Carnival Cruise Line is a little unusual in that it has some ‘Interior’ rooms that have a window. Despite the fact they clearly offer a view of the ocean, they aren’t classified as ‘Ocean View’ rooms. And that’s because the view you get isn’t really something that they’re proud enough to call a proper Ocean View.
The worst of these is a Porthole cabin, where instead of a window, you just get two small, round portholes. And the view from them is limited too because the porthole itself is a few inches thick – this isn’t just a double-pane window.
If you absolutely must have some natural light in the room but your budget is stretched thin then these could be a good option but otherwise, I’d say they’re not worth booking.

6. Staterooms too close to the elevators
Carnival ships often have cabins situated right next to the elevators. This might seem like a great perk – you can easily navigate your way around the ship without any extra walking needed, and within seconds you’ll be on the floor that you’re heading to.
And that’s true, but the thing is people tend to be noisy. The actual elevators themselves are well insulated, and you won’t hear their mechanics, but you will hear people congregating and waiting for an elevator to arrive, as well as the frequent ‘ding’ sounds.
In my experience, most people continue their loud conversation as they head to bed, and only remember to be quiet when they’re a few rooms along the corridor!
It’s not the end of the world, but it’s not the most peaceful location on a Carnival ship, so check the deck plans and maybe aim for something a little further down the corridor.

7. Forward-facing Balcony Rooms
A lot of people prefer the aft of the ship for their Balcony cabin because it offers a more unique view – as you sail, you get to see the wake and enjoy a little slice of tranquillity.
Forward-facing balconies give you a unique view too, as you get to see where the ship is going. But they tend to be far from tranquil. As you’re sailing, the high winds can make it quite loud and uncomfortable to spend any great length of time on the balcony.
Other cruise lines bar you from using forward-facing balconies while at sea completely, but Carnival have a workaround for this – they use heavy swinging doors instead of thinner sliding ones, and they have a windshield to protect the door too.
But while that means you can access the balcony while the ship is sailing, a lot of people won’t want to.

8. Havana Rooms (if you’re not really into sunbathing)
Carnival has some really nice speciality room types that are themed and come with extra perks. One of those is the Havana rooms. Depending on which class of Havana stateroom or suite you choose, you’ll enjoy the same perks but different facilities. The Havana Cabana rooms have their own patio area, but Havana Balconies and Interiors are mainly just upgraded decor rooms.
These do get access to the Havana pool, which is a nice area, and it’s quiet since only guests over 12 years old can stay here – but that’s all you get.
If you’re not someone who’s too bothered about sunbathing by a nice pool, then a Havana room is probably a waste of money, and you’d be better off downgrading and saving your cash for something else you prefer.
Havana Balconies aren’t always ideal as they don’t go right up to the edge of the ship. People can walk right past them, meaning that you may not get as much privacy as you’d hoped.

9. Family Harbor Rooms (if you aren’t a family)
Another of the speciality cabin types on a Carnival ship, Family Harbor rooms are available as Interior, Ocean View, Balcony or Suites. They’re decorated in a fun nautical theme and are close to the Family Harbor Lounge – a relaxing space for families where breakfast and snacks are served, and there are games to play.
This means that most of the time during the cruise, there will be a lot of children running around and having a great time.
If you’re not a family, and you value peace and quiet, I’d definitely recommend steering clear of these rooms even if you think the decor looks pleasant. They will have some noise in the corridors during the day, which will get quite busy too.

10. Cove Balconies
Cove Balconies are quite unique. They’re a balcony cabin but the balcony is a lot more enclosed than a standard balcony, with solid walls and a roof, and a solid steel rail. It essentially means you have an outdoor space with a large window, rather than an exposed balcony.
And some people like this, because it’s more sheltered and private. But a lot of people don’t, also because it’s more sheltered – you’ll not have as nice a view and you won’t catch as much sun.

11. Ocean View Rooms (if you’re into activities)
Carnival ships are packed with fun things to see and do, many of which are on the higher decks.
Ocean View rooms are a reasonable compromise between budget and enjoying a nice view, because they’re a little more spacious than an Interior room but cheaper than paying for a Balcony. But another drawback is that they’re often on lower decks, far away from activities.
So, if you thinking about booking an Ocean View room, check the deck plans to see where it’s located. Otherwise, you might end up trekking long distances every time you want to nip back to your cabin to pick something up or get changed.
If you’re someone that suffers from seasickness, you’ll want to avoid booking a cruise cabin that’s on a higher deck towards the front or aft of the ship. That’s where you’ll feel the most motion.
Instead, book a cabin on a mid-ship location that’s on a lower deck. The movement there isn’t as obvious and it should help you to manage your seasickness symptoms more.

13. Rooms near the anchor
If you book a room on the lowest decks towards the front of the ship, you might be near the anchor. And unfortunately, that is one thing that can be quite loud on a morning in port, especially as your ship will often arrive at its destination in the early hours.
If you’re a light sleeper but don’t want to be disturbed by the sounds of the ship dropping anchor at sunrise, then it’s probably best to look at a different location on your ship.

14. Obstructed View Balconies
There are a handful of Balcony and Premium Balcony cabins on Carnival ships that have an obstructed view, caused by lifeboats. Because of their position on the ship, the lifeboats will at least partially block your view from your room.
If you’re planning on booking a Balcony cabin to specifically enjoy the view, then avoid these cabins. However, if it’s just the fresh air you want and the view is secondary, then these can be a good choice – especially as they’re cheaper than a Balcony cabin that doesn’t have an obstructed view.
You can book an Obstructed View Balcony on Carnival Spirit and Carnival Miracle, and an Obstructed View Premium Balcony on Carnival Spirit, Carnival Miracle and Carnival Legend.

15. Picture-window Obstructed View Rooms
Cruise cabins with a Picture Window with Obstructed View are another that Carnival class as an Interior room, despite them having an outdoor view. However, that view is of the walkway on the Observation Deck, with the sea beyond it.
Bear in mind that this means you could open your curtains to someone walking past you. You’ll have to have your curtains drawn whenever you’re getting dressed, which might be off-putting. It could be quite the weird thought, having someone outside your room on a cruise ship.
These rooms are available on most Carnival ships, with the exceptions being Excel Class and Fantasy Class ships.

16. Connecting rooms (when not needed)
If you’re travelling with a larger group, you might want to look into connecting rooms. These are cabins that are side-by-side and have an adjoining door, which the crew can unlock for you so that you can essentially open up the rooms into one large space.
However, if you aren’t sailing with a bigger number, then it’s best to avoid these rooms if you can. The adjoining door will remain locked throughout, but it’s not very soundproof. You’ll be able to hear a lot of what the strangers next door are talking about or getting up to, and that might not be something you want when you’re trying to relax.
Final thoughts
A lot of the so-called ‘worst staterooms’ on Carnival ships have positives as well as downsides. Some people will love a connecting room or will think that a Cove Balcony sounds lovely. Families will of course have a great time in a Family Harbor room. But they aren’t right for everybody.
The best advice is to take note of the general tips – avoiding the louder parts of the ship – and then find a type of room that best suits you and your party.
Remember with Carnival there are tons of things you can enjoy onboard, and you might not spend much time in your room anyway. So don’t stress over the room choice too much, as you’ll be making plenty of happy memories all over the ship.

When you’re ready to book a cruise on Marella Explorer 2, one of the biggest decisions you still need to make is which cabin type you want to go for.
How important the cabin type is depends on your type of cruising – but it does still matter. Even if you don’t intend to spend a lot of time in your cabin, you’ll need to make sure you have a suitable location.
All of the cabins on Marella Explorer 2 are good – but some are better than others, depending on a few factors (including your own preferences). While they won’t ruin your cruise, choosing the wrong cabin can make it a little less enjoyable.
But don’t worry – that’s why I’ve written this guide. I’ll explain all of the cabin choices for Marella Explorer 2, and tell you why they’re good or why you might wish to avoid them.
Suites – Junior Suites, Executive Suites and Royal Suites
Inside Cabins
Marella Explorer 2 has four main types of Inside Cabins for you to choose from:

With any cruise ship, Inside Cabins will be the smallest rooms – and they’ll also be the cheapest. And that’s the same with Marella Explorer 2. They’re perfect if you’re on a tight budget or just don’t care much about spending time in your room.
On Marella Explorer 2, you can choose Inside Cabins for 2 or 4 guests. They’re the same size, but the ones sleeping four get pulldown beds which are hidden in the ceiling. They’re not the best for adults but they don’t take up any room in the cabin when not in use.
Marella Explorer 2 is an adults-only ship, and Pullman beds aren’t great for adults, but they’re OK as long as you’re not too tall.
Single Inside Cabins are designed for solo passengers. On the rest of the Marella Cruises fleet, single cabins are just renamed versions of the existing cabins and you still get a double bed.
On Marella Explorer 2 there are some Single Inside Cabins that have a double bed – but there are also some that only have a single bed. So make sure to ask when you book, to avoid one with a single bed if you don’t want it.
Outside Cabins
There are four main types of Outside Cabins on Marella Explorer 2:

Outside Cabins are a minor upgrade from Inside Cabins in that you get a view of the ocean. Natural light helps you wake up too, and if you can see the horizon it can help if you suffer from seasickness.
On the Marella Explorer 2, Outside Cabins are equipped with either a porthole or a picture window. Opting for a cabin with a picture window is preferable since portholes are small and offer limited views, as well as minimal natural light.
There are Outside Cabins available for two guests or ones that can accommodate up to four guests by utilizing pull-down beds.
The Single Outside Cabins all have just a single bed – no double bed for you, unlike on the rest of the ships in the fleet. Sorry!
Balcony Cabins
There are three different types of Balcony Cabin on Marella Explorer 2:

Balcony Cabins are a great option as they have a private balcony area, offering an inviting space to bask in the sea air and enjoy the mesmerizing views. It serves as a perfect spot for daytime relaxation or witnessing the enchanting moments of sunrise or sunset, depending on which way your ship is facing.
While the standard Balcony Cabins have the same internal floor space as an Outside Cabin, the measurements provided by Marella don’t include the additional outdoor balcony space. Therefore, you can still revel in the advantage of having more overall space, with the added benefit of being able to enjoy it outdoors.
3 and 4 berth rooms are available and will include either a sofa bed, a pull-down bed, or both. Sofa beds are better for adults, so if you’re a party of 3, try to get one of these rooms.
And then you have a Deluxe Cabin with Balcony, which can sleep up to four people – they have a double bed (some convert to a twin) and a double sofa bed. They’re great for larger parties or just if you want extra space for you and your partner.

There are three types of Suites on Marella Explorer 2:

If you want the very best accommodation on a cruise ship, you’re going to want to look at the suites. And that’s the same with Marella Explorer 2, with three suite categories to choose from.
Balcony Junior Suites
A Balcony Junior Suite is simply a larger version of a regular Deluxe Balcony Cabin, although you also get the Premier Service perks as well. The room has a queen-sized bed and a double sofa bed, sleeping up to 4 guests in total. The spacious balcony has plenty of space to unwind, too.
Executive Suites
The Executive Suites are very spacious – they are twice the size of a Balcony Junior Suite, with a separate bedroom and living area. They sleep up to four guests – the bedroom has a fixed queen-sized bed and the sofa is a double sofa bed. Again, the Premier Service is included.
Royal Suite
The Royal Suite is the most sumptuous accommodation on the ship – twice the size of an Executive Suite, four times the size of a Balcony Junior Suite, and just amazing. It sleeps three guests with a king-size bed and a sofa bed and has a fantastic balcony with a whirlpool bath.
Premier Service
Premier Service is the name given to a set of extra perks that some guests on Marella Cruises can enjoy. They’re sort of like suite perks that you’d get on some other cruise ships.
The Premier Service benefits aren’t a huge list of perks. In fact you only get two benefits from rooms with the service:
Free pressing service for up to 3 items of clothing per guest, in the first 24 hours of your cruise only
Free continental breakfast in bed for each person, once per week
The pressing service is useful if you’re bringing your formal outfit onto the ship and you don’t want the hassle of keeping it crisp while you travel, and the breakfast in bed offers you a cosy way to start your day – but you could just pay for the services anyway.
Adapted Cabins on Marella Explorer 2
There is a small selection of adapted cabins suitable for wheelchair users on Marella Explorer 2. These aren’t listed in the official details for the cabins, but you’ll find them on the deck plans.
Don’t worry, I’ve done it for you.
There is one Inside Cabin and seven Outside Cabins that are wheelchair accessible. They’re all on Deck 5, and they’re all larger than a standard room, although because they’re not listed in the cabin categories, the actual size of the rooms isn’t published. You do get a full-size wet room instead of a regular bathroom.
Make sure you ask for a wheelchair-friendly room if you need one, since there are only eight and you might miss out.
How to choose the best cabin
Choosing the best cabin on Marella Explorer 2 or indeed any cruise ship involves a lot of thinking. How big a room do you want, where should it be, what factors could make it a noisy room…etc.
To make things easier, I’ve created a handy checklist so that you can always get the best cabin for you. Keep it with you and whenever you book a cruise, you’ll never forget something you should be checking for.

Cabins to avoid on Marella Explorer 2
Here are the cabins you’ll want to consider avoiding on Marella Explorer 2. With some of the cabins, it depends on what kind of cruise passenger you are, while others are a more broad recommendation to steer clear.
The Outside Cabins on Deck 5 are advertised as having either a picture window or a porthole, but you don’t get told which one you’re getting when you book – the only way to check is to look at the deck plans (which I’ve done for you!)
These cabins are all those on the ship with a porthole and I would suggest you avoid booking them. Portholes aren’t worth having – the amount of natural light is minimal and you don’t really get a view.
I’d instead pay less for an Inside Cabin, if you don’t have the budget for a room with a picture window instead. Then, when you want a view, just walk to an open deck instead.
2. Deck 12 rooms if you get seasick

If you’re someone who suffers from seasickness, then you’ll want to avoid the highest cabins on the ship. Here you’ll feel the movement of the ocean more.
The highest rooms on Marella Explorer 2 are on Deck 12, so if you think you might struggle with seasickness then I’d look elsewhere. You’ll want a lower deck, ideally in the middle of the ship, with an ocean view so that you can focus on the horizon – this helps a lot of people feel less nauseous.
The worst cabins are therefore the Inside Cabins on Deck 12. You get all the movement of the ship, and no horizon to look at. They’re great if you don’t get seasick though – more on that in a bit.
3. Connecting cabins if you don’t need them
Various locations
As well as having a selection of cabins sleeping 3-4 guests on the ship, Marella Explorer 2 has another option suitable for adult families and groups – connecting cabins. These work in the same way as connecting cabins on any other ship – side-by-side cabins with a door between them.
If you only book one of the cabins, the door stays locked – it’s not like your neighbour can walk into your room. And then when you book both cabins, the door is unlocked so you can walk freely between them.
However, the door is thinner than the wall and so even when locked, you get less privacy – you might hear your cabin neighbours. And if they argue, watch TV or get up to anything else in their cabin, you might hear them…
4. Cabins next to a lift

Usually being near a lift can be both a blessing and a curse. There are always people walking past your door, but you’re also close to the lift yourself, so you don’t have to walk far to get to the rest of the ship.
However, there is one cabin that isn’t just near a lift – it’s directly adjacent. And in that cabin, there’s not just the risk of noise from people but also noise from the mechanics of the lifts themselves.
It’s not mega-loud but you may hear the mechanics and if you’re a light sleeper, it could wake you up. It’s not high-risk, but take earplugs just in case.
On other ships in the Marella fleet there are a lot more of these cabins – so the fact it’s just the one on Marella Explorer 2 is a good thing.
5. Cabins above the Broadway Show Lounge
8000 to 8059
Most of the evening entertainment on Marella Explorer 2 is focused around the Broadway Show Lounge, with live performances lasting until around 11 pm throughout the cruise.
Directly above, on Deck 8, there are some cabins and because a lot of the speakers are on the ceiling, noise and bass can sometimes be felt through the floor. If you’re someone who likes to be in bed early, avoid these cabins just in case the theatre sounds disturb you.
6. Cabins above the Squid & Anchor
8196 to 8241
There is a secondary entertainment venue on the ship, and that’s the Squid & Anchor at the rear of Deck 7. Again, live music can sometimes be played until around 11 pm – so not mega-late, compared to some other cruise lines.
But still, if you are someone who likes to be in bed early ahead of an early start, and you don’t do well with noise, think about avoiding the aft of Deck 8 so there’s no chance of the Squid & Anchor performers disturbing you.
7. Cabins directly under the pool area
10028 to 10065
If you’re someone who prefers a lie-in rather than an early night, I’d recommend steering clear of the rooms directly underneath the pool deck.
The pools on Marella Explorer 2 are on Deck 11 in the midship area and they’re very popular. Also, a lot of the people who cruise on Marella Explorer 2 like to be up early, and so will head to the pool deck first thing.
And then they’ll find a lounger, and drag it into place – across the wooden deck.
That’s a sound that will reverberate through your ceiling and it can be very annoying. For lazy mornings, choose somewhere away from directly below the pool to minimise the risk of early morning noise.
8. Inside Cabins when travelling with adult groups
Inside Cabins that can sleep four people aren’t super common on cruise ships. They’re not super-rare either, but it’s a pleasant surprise to have the option on some ships – many limit you to two or three guests at most.
But to be honest, with Marella Explorer 2 being an adults-only ship, I wouldn’t recommend these if you want a really comfy sleep.
The pull-down beds aren’t massive, and the rooms themselves are quite small – four people getting ready will often get under each other’s feet.
If you value your space, either book a Balcony Cabin or bigger where you’ll get more room, or choose connecting cabins if you have the budget.
The best cabins on the ship
Here are some of the best options for accommodation on Marella Explorer 2:
1. Single Inside and Outside Cabins
There are a number of dedicated Single Cabins on Marella Explorer 2, both Inside and Outside. Not a lot of cruise lines offer single rooms, so if you’re a solo traveller, take advantage of the reduced fares you’ll get for booking this room.
Unlike on other Marella Cruises ships, you won’t always get a double bed just to yourself – so you may be stuck with a single. However, it’s worth it to avoid paying twice as much for your cruise just because you’re travelling alone.
While any balcony will offer a great view, it’s widely accepted by many (not all) passengers that an aft-view balcony is always slightly better. You’re more sheltered from the wind generated by the movement of the ship, and being able to watch the wake is very relaxing.
On Marella Explorer 2, there are aft-view cabins on Decks 8, 9, 11 and 12. The higher the deck, the better the view, but any of them will be a great choice.
3. Deck 12 rooms for pool access
1200 to 1253
Yes – these are the same rooms I’ve already told you to avoid if you suffer from seasickness.
The good thing is, most people don’t, and if you’re sickness-free then you can enjoy a fantastic location on the ship with easy access to the pool decks.
The rooms on Deck 12 include a handful of Inside cabins, some Balcony Cabins and Junior Suites, so your accommodation options are excellent too. If you plan on spending a lot of time by the pools, this is a great spot to choose – though they do book out early.
