It seems like cruise ships just keep getting bigger and bigger. But while some cruise lines are pushing the envelope with just how many passengers can fit on a sailing, one cruise line is doing the opposite:

Oceania Cruises is renovating an existing ship to hold fewer passengers (150 fewer, to be more precise).

Today, news just dropped that the same ship will be used for an epic 180-day sailing that circumnavigates the globe.

The news comes as Oceania Cruises reveals their 2028 and 2029 collection of voyages.

The Major Transformation of Oceania Nautica to Aurelia

In late 2027, as part of the cruise line’s ongoing OceaniaNEXT initiative, Nautica will enter dry dock for an extreme makeover.

Instead of just replacing carpets and updating upholstery, Oceania is fundamentally restructuring the vessel which was originally built in 2000.

They are tearing down standard staterooms and slashing the total passenger capacity from 684 guests down to fewer than 500.

When the ship debuts in late 2027 as Oceania Aurelia, she will emerge as an all-suite-focused ship that is ready for around-the-world travel.

179 of the ship’s 238 total remaining cabins will be configured as spacious suites, most larger than 300 square feet, with some options stretching up to 1,000 square feet. So, that’s 97 cabins effectively being removed from the ship.

This downsizing of passengers on board means having a close to 1-to-1 crew-to-guest ratio, complete with dedicated butler service for suite guests.

The ship will also feature a new Baristas coffee lounge and brand-new bakery and creperie, all alongside a dedicated Chef’s Studio for culinary workshops.

Six Months at Sea: The 180-Day Inaugural Voyages

Oceania isn’t waiting around to test out the newly transformed vessel. Right out of the gate, Oceania Aurelia will host the line’s newly revealed 2028 and 2029 global deployments by sailing back-to-back Around the World cruises.

The 2028 world voyage will embark from Miami, spending a full 181 days sailing along global coastlines before completing the journey in New York.  The ship will travel East, sail the Med, through the Suez Canal, hit some destinations in the Middle East and India before hopping around Asian ports, heading south to Australia and then crossing the Pacific.

The next year, the 2029 itinerary will depart from Los Angeles and head in the opposite direction, sailing West and concluding in New York on a 182-day voyage.

Prices for these 180-day+ sailings start around $58,299 as part of a promotional fare.

Sailing a half-year itinerary on a ship carrying fewer than 500 passengers is an absolute luxury, and Oceania offers some of the most immersive world cruise sailings available.

If you want to see the world and still want some quiet solitude as you wake up in a new port throughout your week, this one is definitely worth a look.

The 2028 & 2029 Deployment

Oceania’s double-season launch includes more than 230 voyages across the global fleet, heavily leaning into extended port stays and off-season scheduling.

For starters, Oceania Riviera is making a change. After spending the summer of 2028 sailing Alaska, she will cross the Pacific to target Japan’s lesser-known, smaller coastal ports like Kagoshima, Ishigaki, and Miyazaki.

These are hidden harbor towns that are physically inaccessible to the industry’s mega-ships, giving cruisers a very unique experience.

Oceania Allura is set to lock in a full second winter season in the Mediterranean. Running from November through March in both 2028 and 2029, these sailings target historical exploration in Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Spain during cooler, uncrowded months.

Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises, gave a reason for this newly revealed list of sailings:

“This new, expansive collection reflects our passion for immersive travel opportunities and offers guests the chance to explore a little further with more depth thanks to more than 60 overnight stays. Launching sailings for 2028 and 2029 underscores our commitment to giving guests and travel advisors the confidence and time to plan the journeys that truly matter. From the historic harbors of the Mediterranean to the remote fjords of New Zealand, each sailing reflects our belief that the world’s greatest destinations deserve to be experienced, not simply visited.”

A woman was filming a carefree scene on her phone as cruise passengers walked back to their ship in Cozumel, Mexico. Her group was dancing along the Puerta Maya pier, celebrating making it back to Carnival Breeze on time after a fun day onshore.

But then the mood completely changed when the camera panned over to the side of the pier, showing a passenger paddling in the water. Apparently, he had purposely jumped off the pier and stayed afloat on his back as onlookers gathered and watched.

He was even thrown a couple life preservers but seemed to ignore them.

The video from TikTok creator, Exquisite, has already racked up over 2 million views and a couple thousand comments.

Although it’s difficult to see in the video, a fellow passenger wearing a red shirt and backpack can be seen I the background, going up to the railing, scaling it, and jumping in before anyone could stop him.

It appears that at least one person did try to stop him as he was coming up to the railing. And yes, I had to watch the video a few times to see what was even happening.

A Standoff in the Water

Jumping off a cruise ship pier is not only dangerous, it’s an act that can land someone in very hot water with the cruise line.

The water around the pier and ships are full of heavy infrastructure, mooring lines, and all kinds of equipment.

It’s been reported that his way down, the man actually struck a large blue pipe running along the dock before slamming into the water.

For a few seconds, a crowd of guests gathered at the ship’s rail, watching the water in a panic. But then, he surfaced.

Instead of screaming for help, the man flipped onto his back and casually started backstroking away from the pier like he was taking a relaxing dip at a resort pool.

Carnival crew members acted fast, throwing two life rings right to him. But he completely ignored them. He actively turned away from the flotation devices and kept floating on his own.

Ultimately, port security had to use a rescue boat, get close enough to hook him with a pole, and physically pull him out of the water against his cooperation.

According to an eyewitness who was standing on the pier, the man was overheard shouting before the jump, complaining that he hadn’t slept at all the night before. Whether it was extreme exhaustion, heat, or just a total meltdown, he clearly reached his breaking point.

“Camera Man, You Had One Job!”

As the video racked up over 2.2 million views, the internet did what the internet does best and started roasting the camerawork.  On top of the rather mismatched saxophone music in the background, commenters were also having to stop and replay the video just to see what actually happened in the background.

After all, the TikToker was just trying to record a happy memory of going back to the ship and didn’t expect to record the viral moment a passenger likely earned a lifetime ban.

Other commenters couldn’t help but laugh at how relaxed the guy looked in the water compared to the chaos on deck, with one writing, “They trying to figure out how to throw him a life raft and meanwhile he’s on the raft of life. Chilling.”

Severe Consequences

While he might have looked “chill” floating in the Cozumel water, reality hit hard the second he was pulled back up.

Carnival Cruise Line has a strict zero-tolerance policy when it comes to behavior that disrupts the safety of guests or ship operations.

According to updates from the creator, the passenger didn’t get to enjoy the rest of his Caribbean vacation. Instead, he spent the remainder of the cruise under “stateroom arrest,” locked in his cabin with security guards standing outside his door 24/7.

Under Carnival’s official Code of Conduct, passengers who violate these critical safety protocols face a $500 fine, room confinement, and are held responsible for any legal or operational costs tied to their rescue and detainment.

In 2026, over 38 million people are projected to take a cruise including over 21 million Americans. The cruise industry continues to grow each year as more new cruise ships, bigger and better than ever, are built and begin sailing.

The first half of 2026 saw several new ocean ships debut, including Four Seasons’ first vessel, Four Seasons I. Here is a look at five new cruise ships that will come out in the second half of 2026.

5 New Cruise Ships, Second Half of 2026

Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas

Legend of the Seas will be the largest new cruise ship, at just over 248,000 gross tons, that is debuting this year. Royal Caribbean recently took delivery of this new ship that will sail its maiden voyage on July 4, 2026.

Legend of the Seas will have 28 different dining options and not only the largest waterpark at sea, but also the largest swimming pool on any cruise ship.

Entertainment on the ship include Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and America’s Got Talent LIVE, alongside deck-defying performances during the AquaTheater’s “Shockwave” and ice-skating spectacles at Absolute Zero’s show, “Fusion”.

Legend of the Seas will start by sailing several months in the Mediterranean before heading to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the winter Caribbean season.

Explora Journeys’ Explora III

Explora III will be Explora Journeys’ third of six all-inclusive cruise ships to enter their fleet. The 72,810 gross ton ship will make its debut on July 24, 2026. It will also be the cruise line’s first ship to be powered by LNG.

Explora III will have 461 ocean-front suites, five heated swimming pools, seven restaurants, and 12 bars and lounges. The ship will have a guest-to-crew ratio of 1.25 to 1.

MSC World Asia

MSC World Asia will be the second largest new cruise ship to debut in 2026 and the cruise line’s 3rd World class ship. It will have the tallest dry slide at sea that will drop 12 decks and be 266 feet long.

The ship will also feature Cliffhanger, an over-water swing that towers 164 feet above the ocean.

MSC World Asia will be loaded with activities for families that include a massive waterpark and a two-level Adventure Trail ropes course.

MSC Luna Park Arena will have interactive entertainment that uses immersive digital technology. The floor will transform into an interactive arena where guests can compete in dynamic gaming experiences.

The venue will also host original game shows including Code Breakers, Labyrinth and Chart Toppers, alongside high-energy themed parties and entertainment across two decks.

Regent’s Seven Seas Prestige

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will launch the first in a new class of cruise ships in late 2026. Seven Seas Prestige will be 76,500 gross tons in size and carry 822 guests and 630 crew members.

The ship will have 411 suites across 12 decks and will be the largest in the ultra-luxury cruise line’s fleet. It will have seven specialty restaurants and 11 total dining experiences.

The all-inclusive ship will have fares that include unlimited shore excursions in every port of call, gourmet cuisine in a range of specialty and al fresco dining venues, fine wines and spirits, onboard entertainment, Starlink WiFi access, valet laundry service, pre-paid gratuities, and a one-night pre-cruise hotel package for guests in Concierge-level suites and above. Across its inaugural season, Seven Seas Prestige will embark on 13 extraordinary voyages across Europe and the Caribbean, including two transatlantic crossings.

Viking Libra

Viking Libra will be the latest Viking ocean ship to enter the fleet when it debuts in December 2026. The ship will carry 998 guests in 499 staterooms, each one will have a balcony.

It will have Viking’s signature Scandinavian design that they are known for, and be similar to the current ships sailing in Viking’s fleet.

The following will be included in all cruise fares on Viking Libra:

• One shore excursion in every port
• WiFi
• Drinks during meals
• Thermal suite
• All dining options

Viking Libra will sail its maiden voyage on December 3, 2026, a 10-night cruise to the Greek Isles from Athens.

For the first time ever, an entire cruise ship is being dedicated to a gluten-free experience, where every restaurant, buffet area, and snack is safe to eat for those with celiac disease and gluten allergies.

Traveling with celiac disease is no picnic. Not only do you have to figure out which restaurants actually treat the gluten-free policy seriously, but just finding which eateries offer these choices can be a chore.

To be fair, the cruise industry has done a lot more in this area in recent years. Most major cruise lines now have designated galley spaces, clearly labeled menus, and staff trained to prevent cross-contamination.

We have even seen incredibly successful “Celiac Cruises” where groups of gluten-free travelers set sail together. But even on those sailings, you are still sharing the ship with thousands of passengers who very much want gluten in their food.

While you might have a dedicated dining room, you still have to keep your guard up at the pool-deck grill, the buffet areas, or even at the soft-serve ice cream machines.

But a newly announced partnership between Celiac Cruise and Oceania Cruises is doing something entirely new.

Instead of reserving a small corner on a ship, they are taking over the entire vessel, so everything on board is safe to eat for those who can’t eat gluten.

Zero Gluten Allowed On Board

For this 12-night sailing on the ship Oceania Vista, gluten is completely banned from the vessel. Every single one of the 11 onboard restaurants, cafes, bars, and 24-hour room service will operate 100% gluten-free.

The cruise line is entirely overhauling its supply chain for this voyage. Standard flour, traditional soy sauce, and regular beer won’t even be allowed past the security checkpoints at the pier.

Every ingredient is being individually vetted by celiac experts before it ever reaches the ship’s kitchens.

For guests, that means total freedom. You can walk into any venue at any hour of the day, order absolutely anything on the menu, and never have to ask a single question about shared fryers or cross-contamination.

And for those with celiac disease, that’s a big deal, and one less thing to worry about while enjoying a vacation at sea.

The Itinerary and Dining Experience

Oceania Cruises is highly regarded in the cruise world for having some of the best culinary programs at sea. Because the entire ship is a safe zone, cruisers won’t have to settle for limited menu options.

Instead, they will get full, unrestricted access to safe versions of upscale Italian, classic steakhouse favorites, Asian-inspired dishes, and French cuisine.

Scheduled to sail from May 31 to June 12, 2028, the cruise features the following itinerary:

• The Route: A round-trip voyage departing from Southampton, England, traveling through the British Isles and Ireland.
• The Ports: Stops include Dublin, Belfast, Liverpool, Glasgow, and the Scottish Highlands.
• On Shore Safety Too: Celiac Cruise is currently coordinating with local operators in each port to arrange pre-vetted, gluten-free shore excursions.

It’s a 12-day cruise where the entire ship is designed exclusively around the safety for gluten-free eaters.  And while it’s the world’s first ship to do this for everyone on board, its success will mean more sailings like this to come in the future.

The Spiral @ Tree of Life will be the the longest dry slide on any cruise ship at 266 feet. It will offer guests a thrilling ride spanning 11 decks in just seconds.

Inspired by the iconic trees of Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, the striking architectural feature blends adrenaline and design while tying into the ship’s Asia-inspired elements.

The Twin Racer & U Drop Waterslides

Guests who are looking for high-speed fun can race side-by-side on the Twin Racer waterslides or take on the U Drop slide for thrills high above the deck.

They are both designed for friendly competition and shared moments, the attractions bring even more energy to the Family Aventura district.

Adventure Trail High Ropes Course

The Adventure Trail ropes course will challenge guests to test their balance and bravery across a two-level course suspended above the ocean.

The MSC Formula Racer

Formula 1 fans, there’s going to be something just for you. The MSC Formula Racer in the Hall of Games will offer guests an immersive racing simulation experience.

The two-seat simulator will allow guests to virtually drive a high-speed Formula 1 car, reflecting MSC Cruises’ ongoing global partnership with Formula 1.

The MSC Luna Park Arena

MSC Luna Park Arena is set to become one of MSC Cruises’ most innovative and interactive entertainment venues to date. Using immersive digital technology, the floor will transform into an interactive arena where guests can compete in dynamic gaming experiences, a first of its kind for MSC Cruises.
