10 Reasons to Cruise with Star Clippers

Dreaming of a holiday that combines the romance of traditional sailing with the comfort of modern luxury?

Look no further than Star Clippers, a unique cruise line that offers an unparalleled sailing experience on some of the world’s most impressive tall ships.

I was lucky enough to be invited to sail on Star Clippers’ flagship, Royal Clipper. Here are ten reasons why I think this is a cruise line to consider for your next voyage…

Star Clippers Ships

1. Sail on the World’s Largest Tall Ships

Star Clippers boasts an impressive fleet of vessels that will take your breath away.

The crown jewel of their collection is the Royal Clipper, recognised by the Guiness Book of Records as the largest fully-rigged sailing ship in the world. This magnificent vessel is a sight to behold, with its towering masts and intricate rigging system that harkens back to the golden age of sail.

The design of Star Clippers’ ships is a masterful blend of traditional sailing aesthetics and modern engineering. As you approach these majestic vessels, you’ll be struck by their sleek lines and gleaming woodwork. The multiple masts, adorned with both staysails and square sails, create a silhouette that stands out dramatically against the horizon.

2. Experience Authentic Sailing Adventures

One of the most thrilling aspects of cruising with Star Clippers is the opportunity to experience genuine sailing. These ships aren’t just for show; they’re designed to harness the power of the wind and provide passengers with a true sailing adventure.

The ships feature both staysails and square sails, managed by an advanced roller-furling system that allows for efficient sail handling. This means that, weather permitting, you’ll spend a significant portion of your journey under sail power alone.

There’s nothing quite like the moment when the engines are cut, and the ship surges forward powered only by the wind filling its sails. You’ll feel a connection to the sea and the elements that’s simply not possible on a traditional cruise ship.

3. Enjoy Intimate and Exclusive Cruising

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer size and crowded nature of large cruise ships, you’ll appreciate the intimate atmosphere on a Star Clippers cruise. With a much smaller passenger capacity compared to traditional cruise liners, these ships offer a more personal and exclusive experience.

The Royal Clipper, for instance, accommodates just 227 passengers, a far cry from the thousands you might find on a mega-ship. This smaller scale means you’ll never feel lost in the crowd. You’ll have the opportunity to get to know your fellow passengers and the crew, fostering a sense of community that’s often missing on larger ships.

Srae Clippers crew members

This intimate setting also provides a unique opportunity to meet interesting people from various countries. Whether you’re sharing stories over dinner or discussing the day’s adventures on deck, you’re sure to make lasting connections with like-minded adventurers from around the world.

4. Access Unique Ports and Destinations

One of the significant advantages of Star Clippers’ smaller ships is their ability to access ports and destinations that are off-limits to larger cruise liners. This means you’ll have the opportunity to explore lesser-known gems and avoid the crowds often associated with popular cruise destinations.

Star Clippers tender boat

Star Clippers’ tender boats are able to sail right onto the beach. So with your ship anchored off-shore, there’s really no limit to the size of the post you can visit, whether it’s a large port like Civitavecchia (for Rome) or a tiny island in Southeast Asia.

Star Clippers’ itineraries often include a mix of well-known locations and hidden treasures. Whether you’re cruising the Caribbean, exploring the Mediterranean, or venturing to exotic destinations, you’ll enjoy a unique perspective on both famous landmarks and off-the-beaten-path locales.

5. Indulge in Luxurious Amenities

While Star Clippers offers an authentic sailing experience, it doesn’t skimp on luxury. These ships seamlessly blend the charm of traditional sailing vessels with the comfort and amenities of a modern luxury cruise.

On board, you’ll find a range of facilities designed to enhance your comfort and enjoyment. The Royal Clipper, for instance, boasts a unique water sports marina at the stern. This platform can be lowered to sea level, providing easy access for swimming, snorkelling, and other water activities right from the ship.

Other amenities might include multiple swimming pools, a spa for indulgent treatments, well-stocked libraries for quiet relaxation, and comfortable lounges for socialising.

The cabins, while maintaining a nautical charm, are equipped with modern conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay.

Royal Clipper cabin

It’s worth noting that while these ships offer luxury, they do so in a way that’s in keeping with the sailing ship aesthetic.

Don’t expect the flashy, over-the-top amenities you might find on mega-ships. There are no crystal staircases here! Instead, Star Clippers provides a more refined, understated luxury that complements the authentic sailing experience.

6. Savour Gourmet Dining Experiences

Dining is an essential part of any cruise experience, and Star Clippers doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Despite the smaller size of the ships, the quality of the culinary offerings is top-notch.

Food on Star Clippers

Typically, Star Clippers ships feature a single main dining venue, creating an intimate and sociable atmosphere for meals. This setup encourages passengers to mingle and share stories of their day’s adventures over exquisite meals.

The menus on Star Clippers cruises are crafted to reflect the destinations you’re visiting, often incorporating local flavours and ingredients. You can expect a range of international cuisines. Fresh seafood is often a highlight, given the nautical setting.

Star Clippers cruises are ideal for those with any kind of special dietary requirement. As a vegan, I was made a special menu just for me each evening. And when it came to the breakfast and lunch buffet, a crew member was always available to greet me personally and show me which options were suitable.

Royal Clipper buffet

While the dining options may be more limited compared to larger ships with multiple restaurants, the focus is on quality rather than quantity.

The intimate dining setting, combined with the high standard of cuisine, creates a memorable gastronomic experience that’s an integral part of your Star Clippers adventure.

7. Participate in Unique Onboard Activities

Star Clippers offers a range of unique onboard activities that you won’t find on typical cruise ships. These activities are designed to enhance your sailing experience and provide unforgettable memories.

One of the most thrilling activities is the opportunity to climb the mast. Under the supervision of crew members, you can ascend the rigging for a bird’s eye view of the ship and the surrounding sea. It’s an exhilarating experience that gives you a true sailor’s perspective.

Cruise Mummy climbing the mas

For a more relaxed activity, you can lounge in the bowsprit netting, suspended over the waves at the very front of the ship. It’s a perfect spot for sunbathing or watching for marine life.

Bowspirit net

Star Clippers also offers educational opportunities that align with the sailing theme. You might have the chance to attend navigation classes, learning the basics of plotting a course using traditional methods.

In the evenings, star gazing sessions take advantage of the clear skies away from light pollution, allowing you to marvel at constellations and learn about celestial navigation.

These unique activities contribute to the overall sailing experience, allowing you to be as involved or as relaxed as you choose during your journey.

8. Enjoy Attentive and Professional Service

The smaller size of Star Clippers’ ships allows for a more personalised level of service. With a lower guest-to-crew ratio compared to larger cruise ships, you can expect attentive and professional service throughout your journey.

The intimate nature of the ship means that crew members can get to know passengers individually, often anticipating needs and preferences.

me on a Star Clippers cruise.

The crew on Star Clippers ships are not just there to provide service; they’re an integral part of the sailing experience. Many crew members are skilled sailors, and their passion for the sea often shines through in their interactions with passengers.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself chatting with crew members about sailing techniques or the ship’s impressive rigging system!

I spent a good ten minutes chatting to the barman who made me a cocktail, because nobody else was at the bar. The said he loves how he’s able to chat to the guests and that it was never possible when he worked on the big cruise ships as there was no time.

9. Experience a Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

A Star Clippers cruise offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. For those seeking excitement, the authentic sailing experience provides plenty of thrills. You can get involved in sailing activities, participate in water sports, or explore exciting ports of call.

Calvi

On the other hand, if relaxation is more your style, there are ample opportunities for that too. You can lounge by the pool, soak up the sun on deck, or find a quiet corner to read a book from the ship’s library. The gentle motion of the ship and the sound of the waves create a naturally soothing environment.

Sun loungers on deck

Many passengers find that the pace of life on a Star Clippers cruise is more relaxed compared to larger ships. There’s less pressure to participate in constant activities or stick to rigid schedules.

Instead, you’re free to shape your day as you see fit, whether that means joining in on sailing activities or simply watching the world go by from a comfortable deck chair. Whether you’re an active adventurer or a dedicated sun-seeker, you’ll find your perfect balance on board.

10. Benefit from Excellent Value for Money

While Star Clippers cruises may seem expensive at first glance, they offer excellent value for money when you consider the unique experiences they provide.

Compared to other luxury cruise lines, Star Clippers often comes in at a competitive price point, especially when you factor in the exclusive nature of the sailing experience.

I was shocked at how cheap the drinks are onboard. A glass of wine or beer is just €3.50 and fancy frozen cocktails are €7.

Star Clippers cocktail menu

If you wish to offer a gratuity, the suggested about is €8 per night, which is around half of the average on a standard cruise ship.

It’s important to remember that the value of a Star Clippers cruise goes beyond just the price tag. The authentic sailing experience, access to unique ports, intimate atmosphere, and personalised service all contribute to creating unforgettable memories that are, in many ways, priceless.

The Bottom Line

A Star Clippers cruise offers a truly unique way to explore the world. From the thrill of sailing on the world’s largest tall ships to the intimate and luxurious on-board experience, there are countless reasons to choose Star Clippers for your next holiday.

Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or simply looking for a cruise experience that’s a cut above the ordinary, Star Clippers provides an adventure that combines the romance of the past with the comforts of the present.

So why not set sail on a journey that promises not just a holiday, but a genuine maritime adventure?

Everything I Wore On A Star Clippers Cruise (Dress Code Guide)

Star Clippers cruises are pretty different from regular cruises, and so you may be wondering what people wear on board…

Cruise Mummy and Royal Clipper

While Star Clippers is a luxury cruise line, the atmosphere on board the ships is relaxed and casual. There are no formal nights, and you certainly won’t be needing your ball gown or tuxedo.

That said, you don’t want to be too casual in the evenings either, as the dining room is beautiful with dark wood, crisp white tablecloths and fresh flowers on every table.

To make it easy for you, here are photos of everything I wore on my four-night cruise on Royal Clipper in the Mediterranean in summer.

Travel outfit

I took a 6 am flight from the UK and boarded the ship at 4 pm in Civitavecchia, Italy. So I needed something that was comfortable and adaptable for the temperature.

I opted for some flowy 3/4 length trousers and a white vest, both from New Look. I also had a denim jacket that I wore until I stepped of the plane.

Cruise Mummy wearing embarkation day outfit

Lifejacket

On a Star Clippers cruise, you have to put on your lifejacket when you go to the Muster Drill. This is pretty unusual as on most ships you leave it in your cabin. Still, I found this quite fun and also very reassuring that I know how to put it on and do up the straps!

Cruise Mummy wearing lifejacket

Daytime outfits

The daytime dress code is always casual, so you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. The Mediterranean can be very hot in the summer, particularly for us Brits who just aren’t used to the heat!

I opted for another white vest, this time with some comfortable loose shorts, both from Temu.

Temu is an online marketplace that’s similar to Shein or AliExpress. The clothes are ridiculously cheap, and these shorts cost about £3. Most of the clothes are good quality though, and if you have any issues then returns are really easy.

Cruise Mummy wearing casual daytime attire

Excursion Outfits

A Star Clippers cruise is as much about the places you visit as it is about the ship, and you can expect to visit some fascinating places.

I booked a walking tour, so I wanted to make sure I was wearing trainers to be as comfortable as possible. I also wore a patterned vest and denim shorts from New Look.

Cruise Mummy wearing clothes for an excursion

Swimwear

If you’re cruising somewhere hot, you’ll definitely need your swimsuit. Royal Clipper has two pools and the other Star Clippers ships have two. They’re more plunge-pool size than swimming size, but they offer a lovely way to cool off.

Royal Clipper also has a watersports platform at the back of the ship, so if you plan on joing waterskiing or wakeboarding, then bear that in mind when choosing your swimwear.

I love this simple black swimsuit from Seaspray.

Cruise Mummy wearing a swimsuit

If you need a new swimming costume of bikini for your next cruise, then take a look at my guide to The 8 Best Swimsuits And Coverups For Cruises.

Coverups

A swimsuit coverup is also a good idea. Lunch is served in the main dining room, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re dry and suitably dressed for that. I love this white shirt from Matalan.

You’ll also want to keep the sun off your face. I love this sun visor from Seaspray.

Cruise Mummy wearing a coverup

Activewear

Royal Clipper has a small gym on board. The other ships don’t but they do all have gym classes available in the morning. If you like to keep active on holiday, don’t forget to pack your gym kit.

Cruise Mummy wearing gym clothes

One of the highlights of my cruise on Royal Clipper was climbing the mast! For this, you’ll need closed-toed shoes. I didn’t actually use the gym or go to any gym classes, but the gym clothes still came in handy for the climb!

Cruise Mummy climbing the mast onboard Royal Clipper

Evening Outfits

I love this sundress from Temu. So much so that I bought it in several colours! It’s flattering, extremely comfortable and I love that I can wear it in the daytime as well as the evening.

Cruise Mummy wearing a summer dress

If you’d like to dress up a little more, you certainly can. On another evening, I wore this printed dress that I bought a few years ago from Sainsbury’s.

Cruise Mummy wearing a dress in the evening

White Night Outfit

Every Star Clippers cruise has a white night and most people dress in white, although you don’t have to.

I wore this white dress that I got from Temu. I rarely have time to go clothes shopping and searching for a white dress in town could take all day! I love that I can just search on the Temu app and have one in minutes.

Cruise Mummy wearing white for White Night

Star Clippers Dress Code

So, there you have all the things I wore on my cruise. Of course, everyone has their own style, but I think I fit in pretty well with the other guests. The main thing is that you wear what you’re comfortable in.

The only rule is that in the evening, “gentlemen should wear long trousers, shirts with collars and sleeves”. However, this isn’t strictly enforced, so if you wear tailored shorts, nice shoes and a nice shirt, you won’t be turned away.

Of course, you’ll also want to think about the weather during your cruise. And be mindful that it can always be unpredictable. Even in the middle of summer, you may experience heavy rain, so check the forecast and pack accordingly.

9 Differences Between Star Clippers and Regular Cruise Ships

With their billowing sails and graceful design, Star Clippers ships look nothing like traditional cruise ships.

But are the sails the only difference? Far from it!

Let’s take a look at what you can expect from a Star Clippers cruise compared to a regular cruise.

1. The ships look totally different

Star Clippers operate tall ships modelled after the classic 19th-century clipper ships.

Star Clippers Ships
Star Flyer and Royal Clipper

These vessels are smaller and more intimate, featuring sails and masts that evoke the romance of traditional sailing. With a capacity ranging from 170 to 227 passengers, these ships offer a unique and cosy atmosphere.

In contrast, regular cruise ships are modern, large-scale vessels that can accommodate anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand passengers. These ships are designed for stability and comfort, boasting as many as 20 decks and lots of amenities.

2. Star Clippers cruises are about the sailing experience

A cruise with Star Clippers emphasises the traditional sailing experience. Guests have the opportunity to participate in sailing activities, such as helping to raise the sails and climbing the mast.

The ships use wind power wherever possible, providing a quieter and more eco-friendly voyage.

Regular cruise ships are powered by oil, diesel or liquefied natural gas engines, ensuring a smoother and faster travel experience. These ships focus on stability and comfort, minimising the impact of weather conditions on travel.

3. Star Clippers cruises have a chilled vibe

Star Clippers offer a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The smaller number of passengers fosters a sense of community and personalised service.

The dress code is elegant yet casual, reflecting a laid-back vibe that encourages relaxation and social interaction. Star Clippers has no ‘formal nights’, but it does offer a White Night for those that like to dress up.

Regular cruise ships offer a wide range of atmospheres, from casual to formal, depending on the cruise line.

The larger number of passengers creates a bustling and varied social scene. Formal nights and dress codes are common, adding an element of sophistication to the experience.

4. Star Clippers cruises are best for people who love being active

On board a Star Clippers ship, the focus is on sailing-related activities and exploring nature.

While the entertainment options are more limited compared to larger ships, activities like snorkelling, kayaking, and shore excursions take centre stage, providing immersive experiences in each destination.

Enjoying watersports on a Star Clippers cruise

Regular cruise ships boast an extensive range of entertainment options, including theatres, casinos, nightclubs, and more.

With multiple dining options, pools, fitness centres, and shopping areas, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy throughout the day and evening.

5. Big ships are best for people with limited mobility

If you use any kind of mobility aid like a wheelchair, scooter or walking stick, or if you struggle with stairs, than a Star Clippers cruise isn’t for you.

These small ships have no elevators, so stairs are impossible to avoid. The gangplank is also very steep and narrow.

Royal Clipper

Instead, cruisers with limited mobility should choose a big, new ship. These offer wheelchair-accessible cabins, step-free access, braille signage, and some even have cabins for the deaf and hard of hearing.

6. Star Clippers ships head off the beaten track

Star Clippers’ smaller size allows access to smaller, less-visited ports and more remote destinations. Their unique itineraries often focus on off-the-beaten-path locations, offering a truly adventurous experience.

tender boat on the beach

Regular cruise ships operate on fixed schedules with popular, well-known ports of call. Their larger fleet and higher capacity provide a wider range of destinations, catering to diverse travel interests.

7. Star Clippers ships are better for the environment

Star Clippers ships have a reduced environmental footprint due to their use of wind power. Their smaller size also means less impact on local ecosystems, aligning with a more sustainable approach to cruising.

Royal Clipper sailing

While regular cruise ships have a larger environmental footprint due to engine power and higher passenger capacity, there is an increasing focus on sustainability within the industry.

Many cruise lines are implementing eco-friendly practices, but the overall impact remains greater compared to sailing ships.

8. Star Clippers is a luxury cruise line

Star Clippers generally have a higher cost per passenger due to the unique experience and smaller size. However, the value lies in the personalised service and the distinct sailing adventure they offer.

Regular cruise ships offer a wide range of price options, from budget to luxury. They provide more amenities and entertainment for the price, appealing to a broad spectrum of travellers.

Don’t miss these hot cruise offers…

9. Regular cruise ships have a wider variety of food on offer

Dining on a Star Clippers ship is an intimate affair, with fewer dining venues but a focus on high-quality, gourmet cuisine featuring regional specialties. The smaller setting allows for a more personalised dining experience.

Baked Alaska

Regular cruise ships boast multiple dining options, including speciality restaurants, buffets, and casual eateries. This variety caters to diverse tastes and offers a broader culinary experience.

Which to choose?

Choosing between Star Clippers and regular cruise ships depends on what kind of cruise experience you seek.

If you long for a traditional sailing adventure with personalized service and unique destinations, Star Clippers might be your perfect match.

On the other hand, if you prefer a modern cruising experience with extensive amenities and entertainment options, regular cruise ships offer a wide range of choices.

Both options provide memorable experiences, so weigh your preferences and set sail on the voyage that best fits your travel dreams.

Star Clippers Ships Compared

If you’re looking for a unique and luxurious way to travel the seas, Star Clippers’ ships might be just what you’re looking for.

These stunning vessels are modelled after the classic clipper ships of the 19th century, complete with towering masts and billowing sails.

But don’t be fooled by their old-world charm – these ships are equipped with modern amenities and state-of-the-art technology to ensure a comfortable and safe voyage.

In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at each of the Star Clippers ships, so you can see how they differ, and decide which one you’d like to sail on…

The Three Ships To Choose From

Star Clippers currently operates three ships:

Star Clipper and the Star Flyer are smaller, with some differences in the facilities you can expect on board.

However, the flagship, Royal Clipper is quite unique. The extra features you can enjoy on this ship include…

While all three ships offer watersports, only Royal Clipper features a platform that lowers into place to create a floating jetty. This means that you can enjoy kayaking, diving or windsurfing straight from the ship.

Observation Lounge

Royal Clipper’s observation lounge is located at the front of the main deck, just below the bridge. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

An Extra Pool

Star Clipper and Star Flyer each have two pools on the top deck, whereas Royal Clipper has three. That’s an extra place to cool of when the sunshine of the Mediterranean or Caribbean gets too hot.

Commonalities Across The Fleet

All three ships are powered by a combination of sails and engines, and are equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and spacious cabins.

Star Clippers’ ships have won numerous awards for their unique blend of traditional sailing and modern luxury. The company has been praised for its commitment to sustainability, with all three ships using eco-friendly technologies and wastewater treatment systems.

Now, let’s look at how this fascinating cruise line and its fleet of sailing ships came about…

The History of Star Clippers

Star Clippers was founded in 1991 by Swedish entrepreneur Mikael Krafft. He had a lifelong dream to revive the golden age of tall ships for new generations of adventurers.

In 1987, Krafft conceived the idea of creating a cruise line featuring clipper ships. After three years of meticulous research and design, aided by the White Star Group and a team of naval architects and engineers, Star Clippers was born.

The Star Clipper and Star Flyer were built in 1991 and 1992, respectively. In 2000, Krafft’s fleet expanded with the introduction of Royal Clipper, the world’s largest square-rigger in service today, cementing Star Clippers’ reputation for offering a unique and nostalgic sailing experience.

Star Clippers Cruise Review

I was invited on this cruise as a guest of the cruise line. The cruise line has no influence over the content of this review. This post may contain affiliate links. If you click one, I may earn a commission at no cost to you.

Star Clippers has a fleet of three tall sailing ships. These offer the traditions of an old-fashioned clipper, with all the modern comfort and luxuries of a cruise.

I could see that the ships looked completely different to any other ship I had ever experienced. So I was keen to see what a Star Clippers cruise was actually like.

First Impressions

I sailed on Royal Clipper. She’s the flagship of the Star Clippers fleet and the largest square-rigged sailing ship in the world.

The cruise departed from Civitavecchia, Italy. Check-in started at 4 pm, which meant that I was able to fly from the UK on the morning of the cruise, drop off my bag at the ship and then spend the afternoon exploring the city.

Here’s my first glimpse of the ship…

Royal Clipper in Civitavecchia
Royal Clipper in Civitavecchia

With just 227 guests on board, embarkation was very quick. I noticed that the gangplank was much steeper and narrower than on a large cruise ship, but that wasn’t the only difference…

Stepping on board, guests were welcomed by the captain and senior officers. We were immediately handed cold towels and cocktails – incredibly refreshing given the heat of the Italian summer!

Check-in was finalised in the Piano Bar and then each guest was personally escorted to their cabin by one of the crew members.

I loved the crew members’ uniforms. Some of them had navy and white stripey t-shirts and some had traditional white tunics. Both were very cool (and I later bought myself one of the t-shirts in the onboard shop!)

Accommodation

Most of the cabins on Royal Clipper are outside cabins with portholes (on Decks 1 and 2), and there are also a handful of luxury suites with balconies on Deck 3.

My outside cabin was very spacious and I loved the traditional look with the dark wood and wood-panelled walls. Stepping inside the cabin felt like stepping back to a different era.

Royal Clipper Cabin

The room had more storage than possibly any other cruise ship cabin I’ve stayed in, so you really don’t need to worry about packing light.

It didn’t affect me as a solo traveller, but another passenger commented about how the bed being against the wall meant that one person had to climb over the other, should they want to use the bathroom in the night. If that’s an issue for you, you can request your beds be set up as twins rather than a double.

Bathroom on Royal Clipper

In the bathroom, the bath mat was arranged in the shape of a boat. There was a lovely basket of toiletries that was refilled twice per day by my cabin steward.

My cabin was located by the stairwell which meant that I did hear people chatting on their way to and from their cabin in the morning and evening. If you’re a light sleeper, I would suggest booking a room towards the front or the back.

Dining

Being a small ship, Royal Clipper has just one restaurant, but it does have enough seats for every guest to be seated at the same time.

Being vegan, I was a little concerned about what food would be available to me. But I needn’t have worried. I submitted my dietary requirements ahead of time and was catered for very well, with lots of dishes made just for me. All of the food was fresh, healthy and delicious.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served buffet style. There’s a good selection of hot and cold items which varies each day, as well as an omelette station.

There were people of various nationalities on board our cruise and the breakfast offerings reflected that with crispy bacon and pancakes (for the Americans) sliced meats, cheese and salad (for the Germans) as well as lots of different cereals, bread and fruit.

If you prefer to eat earlier or later than the two-hour opening, there are also pastries available in the Piano Bar.

Lunch

Lunch is also served buffet style and each day has a theme such as seafood, Italian or Asian. I was always greeted by a waiter who would show me which items were suitable for my dietary needs.

There was a live cooking station offering made-to-order specialities like noodles, pasta or soup with your choice of ingredients. On Italian day, the pasta choices were bolognese or carbonara, but the chef offered to make me pasta with tomato sauce which was much appreciated and tasted incredible.

Afternoon Snack

Afternoon snacks were served between 5 pm and 6 pm in the Tropical Bar and this was my favourite time of day! Each day there was a different selection of sandwiches, fresh fruit, cookies, cake and a special like tacos or spring rolls.

Dinner

Dinner was served at 7.30 pm, but there was no requirement to arrive on time. You can sit with whoever you like, or opt to be seated with people. Most tables are for 6 or 8, with just two tables for two.

The menu had a good selection of options and the food was always incredible. Being vegan, I didn’t get a menu, but instead, each course was a ‘chef’s surprise’, which was just fine by me.

Oftentimes, vegan food on cruises is distinctly lacking in protein, but this wasn’t the case on Royal Clipper. Each meal included some sort of beans, legumes, tofu or nuts.

The other guests all commented on how delicious the food was. We noticed that the ladies were always served before the men, which is a little old-fashioned in my opinion, but that’s all part of the ethos of Star Clippers.

Dress Code

Star Clippers has a relaxed informal atmosphere and there are no strict dress codes. You can wear whatever you want for breakfast and lunch and a swimsuit with a cover-up is just fine as long as you’re dry.

In the evenings, men are requested to wear long trousers. There’s no need to wear a tie or jacket and there are no formal evenings.

There is usually one ‘White Night’ on each cruise. Most guests dressed in white for this, but you certainly don’t need to.

Drinks

I was absolutely astounded by the prices of the drinks on Star Clippers – in a good way! A glass of wine cost just €3.50, while a fancy cocktail was only €7, inclusive of any service charge.

The drinks were fantastic and everyone was amazed at how they were less than half the price they expected. You can’t get a drinks package, but you can expect to enjoy plenty of drinks without having a large bill to pay.

There’s also a water refill station so I would advise packing a reusable water bottle that you can fill up to take ashore with you to save buying plastic bottles of water.

Onboard Activities

There’s always lots to do on a Star Clippers cruise, but not so much that you feel exhausted – there’s time to relax as well.

My favourite feature on Royal Clipper is the watersports platform at the back of the ship. The aft opens up and the platform extends out at sea level so you can easily access the water for swimming and watersports right from the ship.

There’s water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, kayaks, snorkels and paddleboards. Less-adventurous types like me can just relax on the floating bed or bob around with a pool noodle.

I did try snorkelling, but the water was too deep to see any fish. I did enjoy seeing the rudder and propeller though!

At certain times during your cruise, you can climb the mast and also help the crew members with the sails. I’d definitely recommend this as it’s so much fun.

At the front of the ship there’s a net that you can lie on and look down at the ocean. It’s a wonderful place to relax and when the ship is moving you may even see dolphins!

There are three pools and always plenty of sunloungers available both in the sun and the shade. One of the pools has a glass floor, with the restaurant beneath!

Royal Clipper also has an underwater gym and spa (with portholes!) There are also morning gym classes on deck for those who like to keep fit.

The ship also has an extensive library with lots of books that you can borrow.

Entertainment

During the cruise, we often enjoyed live music from the pianist and from the music duo who were very good.

Each evening there was entertainment after dinner in the tropical bar. Entertaining the guests is very much a team event with lots of crew members getting involved, as well as guest involvement too.

On one evening we enjoyed a fashion show, on another we watched the guest and crew talent show, which was very funny.

On the final night of the cruise, we experienced the traditional Baked Alaska Parade, complete with real flames!

Sailaways are always a special event with Star Clippers and it’s wonderful to be up on deck after dark as the sails light up different colours. There are also organised star gazing sessions on offer.

Excursions

A highlight of any Star Clippers cruise is the excursions. As the ships are small, they can navigate to small posts that larger cruise ships can’t reach. Instead of docking at the edge of a city and having to take a bus, you can expect to sail into the heart of smaller, more interesting destinations.

On the island of Capri, we took a tender to the beach and the tender boat took us right to the shore and we stepped off onto the sand.

There are a choice of bookable excursions in each port and I found them to be very reasonably priced compared to other cruise lines. For example, a 3-hour walking tour cost me just €35 and a 4-hour excursion that included a coach ride and cable car experience was €72.

Service

The service on board Star Clippers was second to none. Every crew member was very friendly and went above and beyond to help. With fewer guests, they have the time to chat and bond with guests. In my opinion, the service was absolutely spot on.

Is A Star Clippers Cruise Worth It?

A Star Clippers cruise offers a really special experience. Whether you choose to explore the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or somewhere even more exotic, you can enjoy fantastic off-the-beaten-path itineraries to some of the world’s most stunning destinations.

Sailing on an authentic tall ship is a thrilling experience that makes you feel connected to the ocean in ways not possible on a big cruise ship. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and friendly, making it perfect for solo travellers as well as couples who enjoy spending time in the company of new friends.

Many of the guests I spoke to had sailed with Star Clippers before, which is a testament to how much they enjoyed it. And many were also discussing their plans to cruise again with the line, on a different ship or with a different itinerary.

If you enjoy laid-back luxury on a small ship with the very best food, drinks and service and opportunities for adventure, Star Clippers is for you.
