Corsica Port Blockade Forces Cruise Ships To Skip Calls As Fishermen Protest Fuel Costs

Fishermen protests over soaring fuel prices brought port operations on the French island of Corsica to a standstill on 7th April 2026, preventing cruise ships and ferries from docking and leaving hundreds of passengers facing disruption.

Demonstrators blocked access to several major ports, including Ajaccio, from as early as 6am, creating immediate knock-on effects for both arriving and departing vessels. The action left some passengers stranded on the island while others remained at sea as ships were forced to reroute or cancel scheduled calls.

Among the ships impacted was Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess, which carries around 4,300 guests. The vessel was unable to enter the Port of Ajaccio due to the blockade, forcing a last-minute itinerary change.

A passenger onboard reported that the ship’s captain attempted discussions with protesting fishermen and was told the vessel could enter port but would not be permitted to depart. Faced with that restriction, the decision was made to skip the call entirely.

Sun Princess has instead continued its 7-night Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona and is now heading towards Genoa in Italy. The itinerary also includes an overnight stop in La Spezia before concluding in Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, on 11th April.

There remains hope that the ship may be able to call at Corsica on its return sailing, scheduled for 28th April, although the situation remains uncertain.

Corsica Ports At Centre Of Disruption

The blockade has affected one of the Mediterranean’s key cruise and ferry hubs at the start of a busy travel period. Corsica’s ports, including Ajaccio, Bastia and Porto-Vecchio, play a vital role in connecting the island with mainland France and Italy.

Regular ferry services link Corsica with cities such as Marseille, Toulon and Nice, as well as Italian ports including Livorno and Genoa. Cruise ships also frequently include the island on Western Mediterranean itineraries, making it a popular stop for international visitors.

The disruption is not limited to a single cruise line. AIDA Cruises’ AIDAcosma, which is scheduled to call at Ajaccio on 8th April, could also face difficulties if the protests continue. Several other ships have planned visits to Corsica this month, including Oceania Marina, Seven Seas Splendor, Explorer 2, Azamara Quest and Spirit of Discovery.

Wider Impact Of Fuel Price Protests

The demonstrations are part of a broader movement among maritime workers who say rising diesel costs are placing unsustainable pressure on their livelihoods. The increase in fuel prices has been linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have already had knock-on effects across the cruise industry.

Ferry services were among the hardest hit, with multiple sailings cancelled or delayed while authorities assessed the unfolding situation. The disruption comes at a critical time as the island begins to see higher tourist traffic heading into the summer season.

There are also warnings that the protests could expand. Agricultural groups in Corsica have indicated that farmers facing similar cost pressures may join the action, raising the possibility of prolonged disruption to both cruise itineraries and regional transport links.

With no clear timeline for when access to the ports will be restored, cruise lines are continuing to monitor developments closely, with further itinerary changes possible if the blockade continues.
