Princess Cruises had to approach some guests booked on a 30-night Discovery Princess voyage departing Sydney on 7th April 2026, asking them to consider changing their travel plans in exchange for significant incentives.
Passengers received messages shortly before embarkation offering a full refund alongside a future cruise credit equal to 100 per cent of the fare paid, valid for two years.
The cruise line also offered to reimburse up to $1,500 per person in private travel expenses, including flights, if guests opted to step aside from the sailing.
In a letter shared online, Princess Cruises described the offer as an opportunity driven by strong demand for the voyage. Guests were told they could benefit from “exceptional savings” if they chose to move to a later departure.
The sailing in question is a repositioning cruise that saw Discovery Princess depart Sydney following her Australian season and head across the Pacific to begin a summer programme in Alaska. The itinerary includes calls in New Zealand, French Polynesia, Hawaii and along the US West Coast, before concluding in Vancouver on 6th May 2026.
Passenger Reactions Highlight Travel Disruption Concerns
Some passengers have already voiced frustration at the timing of the request, particularly those who had travelled long distances to join the cruise.
One guest reported receiving the offer after completing a 17-hour journey from Texas to Sydney, raising concerns about the practicality of rearranging plans at such short notice.
Others booked on the same voyage, including travellers based in Australia, said they did not receive any such communication.
This has led to speculation that the cruise line may have targeted specific bookings, potentially based on cabin categories such as balcony staterooms.
Why Cruise Lines Make Move-Over Offers
While overselling may come as a surprise to some cruise passengers, it is a long-standing practice across the travel sector. Cruise lines, like airlines and hotels, rely on historical booking patterns that show a percentage of customers will cancel or fail to arrive before departure.
To avoid sailing with empty cabins, operators may slightly exceed capacity when taking reservations. Discovery Princess, which measures around 145,000 gross tonnes, can accommodate approximately 3,660 guests at standard double occupancy.
When expected cancellations do not materialise, cruise lines turn to so-called move-over offers, encouraging passengers to switch sailings voluntarily. Incentives typically increase until enough guests accept, meaning forced removal from a cruise remains extremely rare.
For travellers, however, such situations can create complications, particularly when international flights, hotel stays and pre-booked excursions are involved. Travel insurance can help offset some of these risks, although coverage varies depending on the policy.
Passengers looking to minimise the chances of being impacted are often advised to select specific staterooms rather than booking guarantee cabins, which give cruise lines more flexibility to reassign inventory.
For those able to adjust their plans, though, these offers can present an unexpected opportunity, with some travellers effectively securing a free or heavily subsidised future cruise by accepting the deal.
