Miami Roundtrip Cruise to Explore Hawaii, Bora Bora and Australia in 2027

A single cruise. Nearly five months at sea. Dozens of bucket-list destinations across the world.

A newly announced world cruise is turning heads, and it’s one of the longest and most ambitious itineraries we’ve seen in years.

Seabourn Quest in Australia

Seabourn has announced a 145-day roundtrip world cruise from Miami that will visit some of the most sought-after destinations on the planet.

The ultra-luxury Seabourn Quest will depart Florida on 5th January 2027 and return on 30th May 2027, completing a nearly five-month journey that spans 67 ports in 19 countries.

The itinerary includes bucket-list destinations such as Hawaii, Bora Bora, Australia and New Zealand, all without the need for guests to board a flight mid-journey.

The sailing will also feature two transits of the Panama Canal and visits to remote and iconic regions including the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia and the South Pacific, making it one of the most wide-ranging world cruises ever offered by the line.

Highlights of a Truly Global Itinerary

Seabourn Quest’s 2027 World Cruise is designed to balance major global cities with lesser-visited ports and extended stays that allow for deeper exploration.

Overnight calls are scheduled in destinations including Sydney, Darwin, Hobart, Lima and Papeete, giving guests time to experience each port beyond a single day ashore. The voyage will also mark Seabourn’s first-ever calls to Wallaroo in Australia and Whangarei in New Zealand.

Other itinerary highlights include extended time in Hawaii, multiple calls across French Polynesia including Bora Bora, and visits to Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands. Guests will also cross both the Equator and the International Date Line during the voyage.

Scenic cruising is a major feature, with planned sailings through New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park, Australia’s rugged Kimberley Coast and the dramatic fjords of Chile.

What’s Included for World Cruise Guests

As expected from Seabourn, the 2027 World Cruise includes an extensive list of inclusions designed to make long-term life at sea as seamless and luxurious as possible.

Seabourn Quest service

Among the benefits are upgraded Starlink WiFi for two devices per guest, business or first-class roundtrip flights, private door-to-door transfers, luggage valet service and a one-night pre-cruise hotel stay.

Guests will also receive a medical services package valued at $1,000, unlimited laundry and pressing, and up to $10,000 in shipboard credit per suite.

The cruise also features exclusive dining experiences, private tasting menus, expanded special events including a gala dinner, and access to President’s Events.

World Cruise guests will also benefit from a reduced 50% deposit at the time of booking and the option to join immersive Seabourn Journeys ashore.

Cultural performances, culinary events and specially curated shore experiences will be woven throughout the voyage, tailored specifically for guests sailing the full world cruise.

Life Onboard Seabourn Quest

Seabourn Quest is one of the line’s most established ultra-luxury ships, carrying just over 450 guests in an all-suite configuration. Most suites feature private verandas, walk-in wardrobes and marble bathrooms, while the ship maintains a near one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

The onboard experience is designed for long, immersive journeys, with multiple open-seating dining venues, enrichment lectures, destination briefings and cultural talks scheduled throughout the voyage. Guests can also enjoy a spa, fitness centre, pool decks and a variety of quiet lounges suited to relaxed sea days.

With generous storage, attentive housekeeping and a calm onboard atmosphere, the ship is purpose-built for guests spending several months at sea.

Seabourn President on the 2027 World Cruise

Mark Tamis, President of Seabourn, said the voyage was designed to create meaningful connections with destinations and cultures across the globe.

Ecuador Galapagos Islands

“We invite travelers to embark on our 2027 World Cruise and discover the most awe-inspiring and extraordinary destinations across Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia, and beyond.

“This voyage invites guests to explore and create lasting connections with both the extraordinary places we visit, and the people and cultures that bring them to life.

“Along the way, guests will enjoy Seabourn’s signature style of luxury travel at sea, elevated by the intuitive, personalized service delivered by our incredible onboard team.”

With its combination of iconic destinations, extended stays and comprehensive inclusions, Seabourn’s 2027 World Cruise is shaping up to be a standout option for travellers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime journey without the logistical challenges of traditional globe-trotting.

US Military Action In Venezuela Causes Widespread Caribbean Cruise Issues

Cruise passengers across the Caribbean faced widespread disruption after US military action in Venezuela prompted temporary airspace restrictions, grounding hundreds of flights and affecting multiple cruise homeports at the height of the winter season.

Caribbean airspace closed

The situation unfolded after an overnight US operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, triggering heightened military activity in the region.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed temporary restrictions on US airline operations to and from parts of the Caribbean, citing safety-of-flight risks.

Although the restrictions applied to aviation rather than maritime operations, the knock-on effect for cruise travel was immediate, with embarkation and disembarkation severely disrupted at key ports including San Juan in Puerto Rico and Bridgetown in Barbados.

P&O Cruises’ Arvia Forced to Alter Turnaround Plans

UK holidaymakers sailing with P&O Cruises were among the most visibly affected. Onboard Arvia, the ship’s captain addressed guests with an announcement explaining that US military action had led to airspace restrictions and the cancellation of several flights.

He confirmed that TUI, P&O Cruises’ airline partner, had cancelled five flights scheduled to operate from Barbados, while two Norse-operated flights would still depart, albeit with delays.

Barbados

Guests booked on Norse flights were instructed to leave the ship later that evening, while those booked on TUI flights were required to remain onboard overnight.

“This is the captain speaking with an important update regarding flights from San Juan and Barbados today. Now for those guests who just returned on board. you may be aware that overnight the United States forces launched attack into Venezuela.

“Well, when events like this occur air space restrictions can be put in place for a period of time. As a result, our airline partner TUI are not operating into Barbados today as planned, and therefore five flights have been cancelled. The two flights operated by Norse will go ahead albeit somewhat delayed, and those guests booked on Norse flights will now leave Arvia at 6:00 and 6:30 this evening…

“Well you might ask why Norse and not TUI? Well, when fight restrictions are put in place, airlines undertake their own risk assessment, and on this occasion TUI have decided to delay their flights to the region including Barbados. Now because of this, those guests who were booked on TUI flights will now remain onboard Arvia overnight.

“Your onward flight arrangements are still being worked through with our head office and travel partner airlines and I will update you tomorrow as the picture becomes more clear. Whilst many of you will be able to return to your original cabin, some guests will relocated to new cabins…

TUI planes

“The hotel team on board are working tirelessly to reassign these cabins and will set up later this afternoon when new cruise cards and cabin keys will be issued to you. The TUI flight luggage is being returned from the airport and will be redistributed to your newly assigned cabin.

“Again, this is a huge logistical challenge, and will take some time before it finally arrives in your cabin. Well I have to say that this is an unprecedented situation beyond our control but I do appreciate how frustrating this will be to many of you. Until your new cabin arrangements are available I would ask that you just remain within the company of the public rooms or enjoy the comfort of the open decks.

“The reception team have no further information regarding the TUI flight situation so please do not go along to the reception desk. Arvia will sail from this birth at about 11 o’clock tonight and will spend the day at sea tomorrow. As Captain, only I will be able to update you with further information or developments. Thank you.“

Arvia subsequently departed Barbados late that night for a sea day. It has since been reported that the ship will return to Barbados after the sea day to disembark TUI passengers and collect guests whose flights had been delayed.

San Juan Airport Shutdown Strands Tens of Thousands

The most severe disruption occurred in Puerto Rico, where Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport confirmed a temporary closure following an FAA security order. Local media reported that more than 300 flights were cancelled in a single day, leaving over 48,000 passengers stranded.

San Juan Old and New

San Juan is one of the Caribbean’s busiest cruise homeports, and the shutdown affected thousands of guests either attempting to embark on cruises or return home at the end of their holidays.

Airports across the region reported similar issues, including those in Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, Barbados, Antigua, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic and Bonaire. Several airports confirmed that flights involving US-registered aircraft were particularly affected.

Cruise Lines Delay Departures and Adjust Itineraries

Several cruise lines responded by delaying sailings or adjusting itineraries to give stranded passengers additional time to reach their ships.

Princess Cruises delayed the departure of Grand Princess from San Juan, extending the ship’s stay in port to allow guests impacted by cancelled flights to embark once air travel resumed. The decision meant the ship would miss its scheduled call at St. Thomas and sail directly to St. Kitts instead.

Grand Princess

Princess said affected guests would receive a prorated refund equivalent to one day of their cruise fare, including taxes, fees and any packages purchased for that day. Passengers unable to reach the ship were advised to contact the cruise line’s En Route Assistance Team.

Windstar Cruises confirmed that turnaround operations for Wind Surf and Wind Spirit were impacted due to airport closures in St. Maarten and Barbados. The cruise line secured berths to delay departures, allowing both ships to sail a day later than planned.

Windstar Cruise Ship

Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages proceeded with scheduled sailings from San Juan, despite some guests being unable to embark or disembark as planned. Jewel of the Seas and Valiant Lady both completed voyages in the port while passengers struggled to find onward flights.

Itinerary Changes to Avoid Venezuelan Coastline

Safety concerns also prompted itinerary changes. Virgin Voyages altered Valiant Lady’s planned route, cancelling calls at Aruba and Curaçao because of their proximity to Venezuela’s coastline. The ship instead visited Barbados and St Lucia.

Quiet beach on Aruba

The cruise line said the decision was taken after close coordination with government officials, stressing that passenger and crew safety remained the top priority.

Guests scheduled for shore excursions in Aruba and Curaçao were notified of cancellations, with further updates promised as the situation developed. Other ships with upcoming calls to those ports are continuing to monitor developments closely.

Airlines Cancel Hundreds of Flights and Waive Fees

Major US airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest, Frontier and Spirit Airlines, cancelled hundreds of flights in response to the FAA restrictions.

The image captures a perspective view inside an airplane cabin, focusing on the back of blue seats and passengers waiting or relaxing. In the aisle, a flight attendant can be seen attending to the passengers, and overhead compartments are slightly open. The setting conveys a typical scene during a flight, emphasizing the compact and communal experience of air travel.

Many carriers waived change and cancellation fees for passengers travelling to or from affected airports on January 3 and 4.

Despite the eventual lifting of restrictions, airline analysts warned that full recovery would take time due to the backlog of stranded passengers across the Caribbean.

Restrictions Lifted but Disruption Continues

Late on Saturday, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that Caribbean airspace restrictions would expire at midnight Eastern Time, allowing commercial flights to resume. Airlines were informed of the change and began adjusting schedules, although passengers were advised to continue working directly with their carriers.

Airplane with plane trails

The FAA also issued security notices advising caution for non-US airlines operating near Venezuelan airspace, while British carriers were warned of potential risks linked to anti-aircraft weaponry and heightened military activity within 100 miles of Venezuela.

Although airspace has reopened, cruise lines and passengers alike are bracing for continued disruption as airlines work through delays and cruise schedules are rebalanced. Cruise operators have urged guests to remain patient, monitor official updates and contact airlines directly, warning that call volumes remain significantly higher than normal.

Too Many Platinum and Diamond Passengers? Carnival Sends Email, Explaining Lack of Perks

A social media post recently highlighted why Carnival has had to adjust its loyalty program as more cruisers reach status.

The legacy loyalty program has really been a victim of its own success as more cruisers come back to Carnival, but it’s also making crystal clear that the changes Carnival is making are definitely needed for the program to offer any real benefit.

The Reddit post titled “Just too many Platinum and Diamond” got the attention of the Carnival cruise community after an email was shared that went out to Diamond and Platinum guests.

The ‘Guest Advisory’ was sent to passengers booked on two upcoming 14-day sailings: Carnival Radiance departing for Hawaii on January 10, and Carnival Venezia embarking from Port Canaveral on January 11.

The email said that because of the high volume of Platinum and Diamond members on board, several perks would be unavailable.

The message went on to list three popular perks that were stripped, stating that following would be unavailable for the two sailings:

  • Priority Embarkation
  • Early Stateroom Access
  • Priority Luggage Delivery

“In addition, we may not be able to offer a priority line and phone assistance by Guest Services.  Related to Diamond guests, due to capacity limitations, we cannot guarantee main dining room seating requests for dinner,” the email stated.

The Problem: “When Everyone is Special, No One Is”

This issue can be more common on Carnival Journeys (longer itineraries) and specialty cruises, which naturally attract Carnival’s most loyal fans. When 30% or more of a ship holds elite status, the “priority” lane can become too long to feel like a perk.

The reaction to the post and email was a mix of frustration and realism in the comment section. One user was blunt about it all: “when everyone is special… No one is special.”

New Carnival Rewards Program Coming in September

This status overcrowding is exactly why Carnival is officially retiring the 13-year-old VIFP Club system and replacing it with Carnival Rewards on September 1, 2026.

The cruise line is moving from a “nights sailed” model to a “spend-based” system, similar to how airlines and hotels operate.

Carnival President Christine Duffy explained that between 2021 and 2024, the number of Platinum guests more than doubled and Diamond guests tripled. In a message to guests, she stated:

“On our Excel-class ships, on average, more than 1,200 guests are Platinum or Diamond, making it nearly impossible to provide meaningful priority benefits.”

Carnival Horizon in Miami

How the New System Works

Under the new 2026 program, status won’t be permanent. Here is how it will look.

Passengers will earn three Stars for every dollar spent on cruise fares and onboard purchases, requiring 50,000 Stars to reach Platinum and 100,000 for Diamond status.

These tiers have to be re-earned every two years. If a guest doesn’t meet the spending target within that window, their status will drop. Cruisers will also earn points that act as a currency, allowing them to buy their own rewards, such as specialty dining, shore excursions, or spa treatments

What Happens to Current Status Holders

After some pretty severe backlash in the initial days of the announced changes to the reward program, Carnival has made a few big concessions for those who hit status before the cutoff date on August 31, 2026.

  • Lifetime Diamond: Anyone who achieves Diamond status by the cutoff date will be given Lifetime Diamond status.
  • The Platinum “Boost”: Existing Platinum members will receive a 10,000-Star “head start” every two years, ensuring they stay at least at the Gold level even if they don’t cruise during that period.

The Bottom Line

Carnival doesn’t have an easy job of keeping everyone happy when so many on specific cruises have reached Diamond and Platinum status.  A change to the old program was inevitable and so was the pain that comes with it.

As one Reddit user said in the comments, “Status level entitlements are no longer guaranteed. Pay for the accommodations and service you want because it’s valuable to you.”

US Coast Guard Suspends Search For Guest Overboard From Nieuw Statendam

The United States Coast Guard has suspended search efforts for a cruise guest who went overboard from Nieuw Statendam, after an extensive operation failed to locate the missing passenger.

Nieuw Statendam

The decision was confirmed late on Thursday, 1st January 2025, with the Coast Guard stating the search has been paused “pending the development of new information”.

“Cruise ship personnel and USCG crews searched for approximately 8 hours over 690 square miles,” the Coast Guard’s Southeast Sector said in an update shared on social media.

The incident occurred while the ship was sailing roughly 40 miles northeast of Sabana, Cuba.

As well as a coast guard boat and helicopter conducting the search, Nieuw Statendam also remained in the area for most of the day, carrying out repeated zig-zag search patterns along its previous track where the overboard was confirmed.

Guest Confirmed Overboard After CCTV Review

The emergency response began early in the day after multiple announcements were made onboard asking the missing guest to report to Guest Services.

When she could not be located, the situation escalated into a full overboard response.

In a statement, Holland America Line confirmed that security footage showed the incident.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that while sailing in waters north of Cuba, a guest on Nieuw Statendam went overboard earlier today,” the cruise line said. “A review of closed-circuit cameras shows the guest alone on the ship’s third deck appearing to go overboard intentionally.”

The Coast Guard later confirmed the guest was a 77-year-old woman. No further personal details have been released to protect the privacy of her family and travelling companions. Holland America Line’s family assistance team is providing support to those affected.

Ship Resumes Itinerary After Search Ends

As daylight faded, with sunset in the area at around 5.30pm, Nieuw Statendam was released from search duties and instructed to resume her voyage back towards Port Everglades.

The ship had been scheduled to call at Key West, Florida on Friday, 2nd January, but that port visit was been cancelled. Instead, the final day of the seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise was spent at sea, with the vessel returning to Fort Lauderdale as planned on Saturday, 3rd January.

Nieuw Statendam

Nieuw Statendam is a Pinnacle-class ship capable of carrying 2,666 guests at double occupancy and more than 4,100 guests when fully booked. Holiday sailings such as New Year cruises typically operate close to maximum capacity.

The ship is currently homeported in Fort Lauderdale through early April, after which she will reposition to Europe for a summer season featuring British Isles, Arctic Circle and Baltic Capitals itineraries from Dover and Rotterdam.

She is scheduled to return to Florida in December for another Caribbean winter season.

Why Overboard Searches Are So Challenging

When a potential overboard incident is reported, cruise lines follow strict procedures, including headcounts, cabin checks and rapid review of CCTV footage. If an overboard is confirmed, maritime authorities are alerted immediately.

Many modern cruise ships are equipped with man overboard detection systems that use cameras, motion sensors and alarms. However, even with advanced technology, locating a person in open water remains extremely difficult.

Large ships can travel several miles before they are able to safely slow, turn and return to the suspected location. Currents, waves and wind can then move a person far from the original point of entry, rapidly expanding the search area.

The Coast Guard has emphasised that suspended searches can be resumed if credible new information becomes available.

Carnival Mardi Gras Passenger Arrested After Disturbing Videos Found During Customs Check

A Carnival Cruise Line passenger has been taken into custody after authorities discovered disturbing content on his mobile phone while he was passing through US Customs following a cruise.

Arrested passenger on Mardi Gras

The man, identified as Anthony Ridings, had recently disembarked Carnival’s Mardi Gras when he was stopped by US Customs and Border Protection officers during routine processing.

Agents reportedly had concerns that Ridings may have been in possession of illegal material involving children.

However, when officers examined the device, they instead discovered multiple videos allegedly depicting adults engaging in sexual acts with animals, which constitutes animal abuse under Florida law.

Investigation Triggered After Cruise Disembarkation

Authorities have not publicly disclosed how Ridings initially came to their attention. Law enforcement officials note that cruise ships can detect and flag illegal downloads made while guests are connected to onboard WiFi systems, which may alert investigators once a ship returns to a US port.

“Ridings was stopped by our friends at Customs and Border Patrol regarding possible possession of child p— on his cellphone…” said Wayne Ivey in a statement posted on social media.

“However when Agents looked at the videos, they didn’t find videos of child p—, but instead downloaded videos of adults engaging in sexual activities with dogs,” Ivey continued.

Following the discovery, Agent Josh Strait from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit responded to Port Canaveral to conduct interviews and begin a formal investigation.

During questioning, Ridings allegedly told investigators that the videos were intended to “shock” his friends.

Arrest Made After Forensic Review

While the exact sailing has not been confirmed, Ridings is believed to have disembarked Mardi Gras in Port Canaveral on 27th December 2025, when the Excel-class ship was turning around between Caribbean itineraries.

Ridings was not immediately arrested. His phone was first examined by a digital forensics unit to determine whether additional illegal material was present.

“Ridings was not taken into custody at the onset of the investigation as Agent Straight was having the cellphone examined by our Digital Forensics Unit for additional evidence of the criminal activity,” Sheriff Ivey explained.

Following that review, an arrest warrant was issued.

Ridings was arrested on New Year’s Eve in Daytona Beach and remains in custody. He is currently being held on a bond set at $300,000.

Public Reaction and Cruise Line Response

News of the arrest has sparked strong reactions online, with many expressing relief that the investigation led to charges and calling for further action against anyone involved in the creation of the videos.

“This world sure has a lot of sick people in it. Glad he’s in jail,” one commenter wrote.

Sheriff Ivey also addressed the case bluntly in his statement: “C’mon man, who in their right mind would want to look at or show his buddies that kind of disgusting, sick, vile, demented videos?”

As with all criminal cases, Ridings is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Carnival Cruise Line has not issued a public statement regarding the incident, though the company has a long-standing policy of cooperating fully with law enforcement investigations when requested.

High Winds Halt DJ Alok’s New Year Show Aboard MSC Preziosa

What was meant to be a high-energy New Year celebration at sea took an unexpected turn aboard MSC Preziosa, when severe winds forced crew members to abruptly halt an outdoor performance and rush guests to safety.

High winds interrupt MSC New Years Party

The incident unfolded in the early hours of 2nd January 2026, as Brazilian DJ DJ Alok was performing a live set on the ship’s open decks.

MSC Preziosa, a 139,072-gross-ton Fantasia-class vessel, encountered rapidly worsening weather conditions while sailing back to Santos, São Paulo, following a four-night New Year cruise.

As gusts intensified, ship security stopped the show and instructed guests to leave the open decks and move indoors, in line with standard maritime safety procedures.

Guests Rushed Indoors as Conditions Deteriorated

Footage shared on social media by passenger and influencer Francisco Garcia shows guests and crew struggling against powerful winds as they hurried inside.

The situation appeared chaotic, with loose objects moving across the deck and security staff shouting instructions over the noise of the gusts.

“It was us running everywhere, and security getting the people out and yelling ‘let’s go, get down, get down, get down’ and things flying,” Garcia said while describing the moment.

Strong winds at sea can pose serious risks, particularly on open decks. Sudden gusts can slam doors, shift deck furniture and create wind tunnel effects that increase the risk of falls or injuries. In extreme cases, conditions can also raise concerns about passengers being swept off balance near railings.

Brief Tilt Sparks Passenger Alarm

Adding to the tension, some guests reported that MSC Preziosa briefly tilted as the ship was hit by the strongest gusts. For a number of passengers, the sensation was alarming.

MSC Preziosa

“The vessel started to tilt… a woman passed by me, I said, ‘What is it woman? What is happening?’ She said ‘The vessel is capsizing,’” Garcia recalled.

While the moment was unsettling, modern cruise ships are designed with advanced stability systems and powerful stabilisers. A temporary list caused by wind or waves is not uncommon and does not mean a ship is in danger of tipping over.

The tilt reportedly lasted only a short time before the bridge team adjusted course and stabilised the vessel.

No Injuries as Crew Praised for Response

Despite the dramatic conditions, no injuries were reported. Aside from spilled drinks and a few items knocked over, there was no damage to the ship.

Once conditions improved, celebrations were able to resume and DJ Alok later continued his performance.

Many guests subsequently praised the crew for their calm and decisive handling of the situation, highlighting the effectiveness of the ship’s safety protocols.

Stormy Weather Near Brazilian Coast

At the time of the incident, MSC Preziosa was approaching Santos to disembark guests from the New Year sailing, which had embarked on 29th December 2025. The region was experiencing unstable weather, with forecasts calling for heavy thunderstorms.

Brazil’s Defesa Civil had issued warnings for the São Paulo state, advising of strong winds, lightning, heavy rain and the possibility of hail affecting coastal areas, including the Baixada Santista region near Santos.

While the conditions felt extreme to many onboard, experienced bridge teams continuously monitor weather data and are trained to manage sudden changes. In this case, MSC Preziosa arrived in Santos safely and on schedule.

The ship completed disembarkation without further incident and has since departed with a new set of guests for a short three-night cruise, bringing an eventful New Year voyage to a safe conclusion.

Celebrity Eclipse Reports Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreak on Christmas Cruise

A Christmas cruise meant to offer festive cheer instead became an unpleasant experience for some guests aboard Celebrity Eclipse, after a gastrointestinal illness outbreak was reported during the holiday sailing.

Celebrity Eclipse

The outbreak occurred on the ship’s eight-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, which departed Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, 20th December 2025, and returned on Sunday, 28th December.

The sailing included visits to Antigua, St Maarten, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 95 guests out of 3,042 onboard reported symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

Nine crew members from a total complement of 1,235 also reported similar symptoms. The figures represent 3.1% of guests and 0.7% of crew, crossing the CDC’s mandatory reporting threshold of 3% for passengers.

The ship was able to complete its itinerary as planned and has already departed on its next cruise, with no delays reported.

CDC Notification and Onboard Response

The outbreak was formally reported to the CDC once Celebrity Eclipse returned to Fort Lauderdale. The case numbers reflect illnesses reported across the entire voyage, meaning passengers may have fallen ill on different days rather than all at once.

In response, the ship’s crew implemented enhanced sanitation and containment measures to reduce the risk of further spread.

Celebrity Eclipse

These included increased cleaning and disinfection of public areas, isolating guests and crew who reported symptoms, and collecting samples for laboratory testing to determine the cause of the illness.

While the specific causative agent has not yet been identified, most gastrointestinal outbreaks on cruise ships are linked to viruses such as norovirus, which spread easily through contact with contaminated surfaces or person-to-person interaction.

Health authorities note that frequent handwashing, particularly after using the toilet and before eating, remains one of the most effective ways for guests to protect themselves. Avoiding unnecessary contact with high-touch surfaces such as railings, lift buttons and buffet utensils can also help reduce transmission.

Part of a Wider Pattern in 2025

The outbreak aboard Celebrity Eclipse was the only reported incident involving a Celebrity Cruises ship in 2025, but it is the 22nd gastrointestinal outbreak recorded across all cruise lines in that year.

Most outbreaks reported to the CDC in 2025 were attributed to norovirus, although some did not have a confirmed cause. Other identified agents this year have included E. coli and ciguatera poisoning.

The most recent outbreak prior to this incident occurred aboard AIDAdiva in late November and early December, when 114 guests and crew were affected by norovirus.

Despite persistent misconceptions, cruise ships are not inherently prone to illness. Hundreds of voyages sailed in 2025 without any reported outbreaks, and incidents have occurred across vessels of all sizes and brands, from luxury operators to large mainstream cruise lines.

Before the Christmas sailing on Celebrity Eclipse, the last outbreak reported to the CDC involving Celebrity Cruises occurred in May 2024 aboard Celebrity Summit, when 78 guests and crew were affected by norovirus.

While falling ill on any holiday is unfortunate, cruise health experts emphasise that swift reporting, isolation and sanitation measures remain highly effective in limiting the impact of onboard outbreaks.

NCL Changes Logo to Black, Says Something Different Is Coming

Norwegian Cruise Line posted a few updates on social media over the past few days with a few cryptic messages that have cruisers wondering what is coming in 2026.

Norwegian cruise line escape ship

First, NCL changed their logo to black on their website, Facebook, Instagram and X after having a blue logo for years.

Secondly, the cruise line changed the header image on both Facebook and X with a trademarked slogan that reads, “It’s Different Out There”.

NCL filed to trademark the slogan on October 17, 2025. The quote was previously trademarked by Kloster Cruise Ltd. but was canceled in 2002.

Thirdly, Norwegian Cruise Line posted a video a little more than an hour ago on Facebook and Instagram saying something different was coming.

It’s a video of men dressed in 1700’s apparel dancing on a ship and can be seen below.

The posts have NCL cruisers confused and wondering what the cruise line is going to announce. The comments can be read on the above Facebook post.

Cruise Fever will have all updates when Norwegian Cruise Line announces exactly what “different is coming”.

Carnival-Zero-proof-drink-package.jpg

Heald Responds to Questions About the New Non-Alcoholic Drink Package

When Carnival Cruise Line first introduced CHEERS! Zero Proof in September 2025, it was sort of an experiment based on perceived demand to see if Carnival cruisers were ready for a premium non-alcoholic option.

But the response was so overwhelming that the program has quickly become one of the more popular add-ons for the 2026 sailing season.

Carnival Zero proof drink package

Even though the Zero Proof package has been available for a while now, Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald is still being asked a lot of questions about how it works and what 2026 will look like.

Taking to Facebook this morning, Heald addressed the “dozen plus” questions he received in just a 30-minute span, promising fans: “I will share the news about it opening for the rest of 2026 as soon as I can.”

With this news on the horizon, many cruisers are still trying to figure out if the premium price tag is worth it or if they should just stick to the classic “Bubbles” package.

Here is the latest clarification on how these two options compare and what is included.

Heald’s “Zero Proof” Bar Tour

In his recent video updates on Facebook, Heald went behind the bar to show that “Zero Proof” is about having access to the “premium” side of the ship’s beverage program.

The biggest draw for many is the inclusion of Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Spirits. These are high-end distilled botanicals used to create mocktails that actually taste like gin, rum, or tequila.

Heald also confirmed that the package includes:

  • The Coffee Shop: Unlimited lattes, cappuccinos, and espresso from JavaBlue Café.
  • Energy Drinks: Unlimited Monster Energy drinks and Powerade.
  • Coca-Cola products: A full range of Coca-Cola products, including Barq’s Root Beer, Ginger Beer, and Tonic Water.
  • Health & Treats: Bottled protein shakes, smoothies, and milkshakes.

Zero Proof vs. Bottomless Bubbles

The “Bottomless Bubbles” Soda Program

This is Carnival’s unlimited soda option that has been around for a while. It is strictly a “glass and juice” package with fountain sodas.

  • Inclusions: Unlimited fountain sodas (served in 16oz glasses) and juices (served in 10oz glasses).
  • The Restrictions: It does not include bottled water, specialty coffee, or any mocktails. It is also limited to onboard use only and cannot be used for Room Service.
  • The Price: Usually $9.50 per adult, per day (plus a 20% service charge).

The “CHEERS! Zero Proof” Premium Program

This is the more premium version of the non-alcoholic package. At $29.99 per day (pre-cruise) or $34.99 (onboard), it is more expensive, but it covers the entire 500ml bottled water lineup (still, sparkling, and coconut), every specialty coffee, and every zero-proof cocktail on the ship.

The One Rule Everyone Asks About

One of the most important clarifications Heald has made involves the “Cabin Rule.”

The standard alcoholic Cheers! Package forces every adult in the stateroom to buy it if one person does.  But Zero Proof is an individual purchase, making it an even more economical route to take.

You can buy it for yourself without forcing the whole cabin to chip in. This makes it a great value for the one person in the room who can’t survive without their morning latte and afternoon energy drink.

Important 2026 Reminders

  • 21+ Restriction: Even though it’s “Zero Proof,” you still have to be 21 or older to order the alcohol-free beer, sparkling wine, or Lyre’s-based mocktails.
  • The Cool Down: There is a 10-minute wait time between orders to prevent sharing.
  • The Locations: Neither package works at private destinations like Celebration Key or through the mini-bar in your stateroom.

If you don’t see the Zero Proof package available for your upcoming cruise you’re not alone. Many future cruisers have reported that that package isn’t showing up as an option for their cruise.

As Heald mentioned today, the 2026 booking calendar for this package is a work in progress. If you don’t see it in your Cruise Manager yet, keep checking.  Heald said, he’ll be the first to let the “Fun Ship” family know when it officially goes live for the full year.

Ditch Your Cruise Card? Closer Look at Royal Caribbean’s Idea for Smart Cabin Doors Using Facial Recognition

The only thing exciting about a cruise cabin door is walking through it and closing it behind you. That’s one of my favorite moments of a cruise on embarkation day.

But some new tech being developed by Royal Caribbean is looking to upgrade how cabin doors work and could even allow passengers to open them with just their faces.

Royal Caribbean smart door patent

We have all been there. You’re walking back to your cabin with a plate of snacks in one hand and a drink in the other, only to realize your SeaPass card is buried deep in your pocket.

It is a small annoyance that Royal Caribbean is looking to solve but not just for the sake of convenience.

I recently took a closer look at a Royal Caribbean patent titled the “Multifunction smart door device.”

And while the buzz around this tech was recently highlighted with the launch of Star of the Seas in August of 2025, the story actually began in May 2020 when the application was first filed.

After four years of working through the system, it was officially granted to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. in April 2024.

The Vision: “Your Face is a Better Wearable”

To understand why Royal Caribbean is heading in this direction, you have to look at their vision on “frictionless” travel. Jay Schneider, Royal Caribbean’s Chief Product Innovation Officer and one of the inventors listed on this patent, stated:

“There are use cases where a wearable on your arm or a lanyard… might be relevant, but your face is a better wearable for you long term than having to distribute something to you.”

Angie Stephen, a Vice President at Royal Caribbean, pointed out that the human face is an “always-on wearable.” Unlike a watch or a lanyard, you can’t forget your face in the room when you head to the pool.

More Than Just a Lock

If you look at the technical illustrations from the patent (specifically Figures 5A and 5B), it is clear this isn’t just a standard door.

  • The “Eye” of the Door: An interesting feature is the wide-angle camera (labeled 512). This is designed for facial recognition, identifying you as you approach and unlocking the door automatically.
  • The Digital Peephole: The patent suggests this camera can transmit a live feed to your phone. Imagine being on your balcony and seeing exactly who is knocking on your door via the Royal app.
  • The “Plan B”: In the drawing, you’ll also see a keypad (522). Royal Caribbean included this as a manual override or “Plan B” for those moments when the tech might need a backup.

The Pilot Phase

Now, we have to remember that a patent is often just a blueprint of an idea.  There is no guarantee that this illustration will be developed just as drawn or described. But Royal Caribbean previously announced that the new Star of the Seas would test some of this smart door tech.

Schneider has confirmed this will be a “test, adjust, and scale” approach, probably starting with a small number of select cabins.

While most of us haven’t seen these doors in action yet (we’ve looked), the fact that they are already supposedly in the pilot phase shows that Royal Caribbean is serious about making the plastic SeaPass card a thing of the past, at least in part.

5 Tidbits from the Patent I Found Interesting

The patent is full of all kinds of information, and it’s a fairly long document.  Keep in mind that just because it’s in the patent doesn’t mean it will ever be implemented, but after reading through as much of it as I could handle in a few settings, here are a few interesting takeaways from it.

  1. The “Confidence” Score:

The system doesn’t just “see” you; it does math to decide how sure it is that you are the rightful owner of the cabin.

The patent states: “The strength may indicate a confidence level in the facial recognition result… for example, the strength may include a numerical value (e.g., a value between 0 and 1) indicative of a computing system’s confidence level in the accuracy of the facial recognition result.”

  1. It “Wakes Up” Your Room

The door would essentially be the remote control for your cabin. When you trigger the door to open it may set the AC to your preference right away and turn it off when you leave.

The patent states: “User stateroom preferences may include, for example, room access preferences, HVAC or climate control preferences, service or delivery requests, stateroom lighting preferences, in-room media preferences, or the like.”

  1. A Door That Remembers You for Your Next Cruise

Royal Caribbean is looking at this as a way to recognize you for future cruises as well, not just for the current sailing.

The patent states: “Facial recognition data for a customer may be retained after the conclusion of a cruise and may be used as initial facial recognition data for the customer when the customer returns for a subsequent cruise.”

  1. Beyond Passengers

The system is designed to track more than just the passengers staying in the cabin. It creates a security log for anyone who enters the room.

The patent states: “A customer can include any entity that accesses the services… such as but not limited to a cruise ship passenger, a guest services attendant, a food and beverage attendant, a cashier, a maintenance technician, or the like.”

  1. Motion Recognition

The system is designed to be “frictionless,” meaning it should work while you are walking, rather than making you stop and pose.

The patent states: ” The image capture device 208 may be configured to capture images continually on a periodic basis… based on motion detection… The system also employs real-time face recognition to continuously or periodically track the presence of the authorized individual.”

Bottom Line

Time will tell if and when this new tech will be commonplace on a cruise ship.  This kind of technology has to run just about perfect before it’s utilized on every cabin door. Issues like good hallway lighting so faces can be seen, being able to work while wearing sunglasses or a hat and making sure false positives don’t trigger an action all have to be dealt with first.  Of course, then there’s also the issue of how privacy and how well-received this technology will be with the average cruiser.
