Taking the fast ferry from the Philippines sounds easy, right? Just choose when you want to leave, book a ticket, and show up. But anyone who has traveled between islands knows that a few common planning and booking mistakes can turn a smooth journey into stress and chaos, added cost, or even a missed adventure entirely.
Don’t let this be you! Take a look at the following common mistakes travelers make on routes like the Cebu to Bohol ferry, and how you can avoid them to ensure a memorable, drama-free adventure in the Philippines.
Mistake 1: Waiting Until the Last Minute to Book Tickets
Among the simplest ways to place yourself in a problematic situation would be to assume you can buy your ticket on the date of travel. For example, for highly searched routes such as Cebu to Bohol, fast-craft ferries are usually sold out in advance, more so for holidays such as Christmas, Sinulog, or Holy Week in the peak season of December to April.
Even for travel during the middle of the week, these ferry lines fill quickly because they are among the most important and primary methods for travel for both locals and visitors alike.
If you’ve already used up all possible seat reservations, you’ll find yourself scrambling for alternatives with less convenient or more expensive means.
Solution: Book online at least 3-7 days in advance during normal traveling seasons or 2-3 weeks in advance during peak seasons. Take advantage of online booking, as this will enable you to select your preferred departure time and class of seats before availability disappears.
Mistake 2: Disregarding Weather and Seasonal Factors
While weather conditions may not significantly affect flight schedules, they can greatly influence sea travel. In fact, the Philippines has a wet and dry season, and even the speediest ferry boat can become delayed or canceled as a result of rough waters, making the crossing perilous.
The rough sea conditions are mostly experienced between June and November. The cancellation of flights tends to peak during periods of typhoon warnings. It would be an unfortunate situation to encounter if you have not checked on the weather conditions or the cancelation policy of the airline company before flying.
Solution: Check weather forecasts or ferry advisories for the days leading up to a ferry journey. If the weather looks poor, consider rebooking for an earlier date or purchasing ferry insurance for ferry cancelations or delay cover.
Mistake 3: Understanding the Importance of Arrival Times
The ferry routes seem simple on the diagram, but the reality around the ferry terminals is anything but.
Cebu Pier 1 and the Tagbilaran terminal in Bohol can get quite messy, to say the least, and even more so during the weekend. You’d have to wait in lines interminably for just check-in, fees, and security clearance alone. If you’re meeting a plane or tour schedule, showing up only 15 minutes prior to flight time will get you nowhere fast.
Solution: Come at least 45-60 minutes prior to departure time for the airport-bound train. If there’s a chance that the train station will be super busy, come even earlier. When transferring from the airport, the Cebu traffic flow varies from light to heavy depending on the time of departure, too.
Mistake 4: Selecting the Incorrect Seating Class without Comprehension
Not all ferry seats are the same. Economy seats are more affordable, but they can be a bit cramped, especially if the ferry is packed, for a 2-hour route.
Business or tourist class tickets are more expensive, with greater comfort and space, and they are sought after by experienced travelers. This could be especially helpful in preventing seasickness.
Solution: Pre-purchase a ticket for a specific seat. A comfortable seat is very important on a boat, and it may well pay off to splurge a little for a better seat to enjoy the trip. At the same time, this would increase the chance of not having motion sickness.
Mistake 5: Failure to Consider Additional Fees at the Port
Included in your ferry ticket is your seating inside the ferry. However, this is rarely the only cost. Expect a small fee when you arrive at most ports in the Philippines before you can board a ferry. This payment is usually required in cash.
If you do not bring money, you might find yourself scrambling for an ATM machine if you do not want to delay your check-in process. There are also those who charge for excess luggage.
Solution: Small amounts of local cash may be taken along for fees at airport terminals, baggage charges, snacks, or anything not included in the ticket.
Mistake 6: Overpacking or Misunderstanding Luggage Requirements
Ferries can carry more pieces of luggage compared to flights, although they have some constraints. Most speedboats also give a certain amount of hand-carried luggage for free, ranging from 7-15 kg.
Bulk gear, such as surfboards or scooters, may require other considerations and additional costs. Not checking airline baggage requirements can result in additional expenses or having to abandon certain items.
Solution: Before you book, check what the airline’s luggage rules are for their operator. Label bags heavily and get essentials into hand carry so you’re not competing for space in the hold.
Mistake 7: Forgetting That Ports and Terminals Are Not Tourist Zones
The ferry stations resemble busy transportation centers because they are. People selling goods, bicycle drivers, and local guides linger near the exit points, and without any prior organization for transportation in and out, you may find yourself wasting time getting a ride.
There is always a pool of tricycles, taxis, and ride-for-hire outside the piers of Cebu and Bohol, but during peak hours, they can be hard to come by.
Solution: If possible, you must arrange for onward transport before arriving or at least work out a possible route from the pier to accommodation. Even a route map and approximate fare rate can prevent worry if you arrive without a transport plan.
Final Thought
Booking and riding a high-speed ferry in the Philippines doesn’t need to be a gamble. With forethought, knowing what to expect from schedules and fees, and looking beyond the actual ticket, what could be a frustrating experience turns into a smooth leg of your island journey.
These aren’t dramatic mistakes; these are the sorts that can trip up even experienced travelers. The difference between a memorable crossing and a travel headache is how to avoid them. Follow the tips above, and your ferry adventure will be one of your trip’s highlights instead of a cautionary tale.

When Viking invited me to experience a 7-night “Christmas on the Rhine” cruise, my husband was buried in work as the holidays approached. Rather than pass up the opportunity, I invited my sister-in-law to join me, and that decision turned this sailing into one of the most enjoyable and unexpectedly perfect girls’ trips I’ve ever taken.
Viking’s Christmas on the Rhine Itinerary
I’ve cruised with Viking many times before, on ocean, expedition, and river itineraries that often attract couples with an equal mix of male and female guests. This Christmas Cruise felt different immediately. The majority of guests were women traveling solo, with sisters, friends, or in small groups. After just a few days onboard, it was easy to see why a Christmas river cruise blends comfort, culture, shopping, and connection in a way that feels tailor-made for women traveling together.
Here are six reasons why a Viking Christmas river cruise on the Rhine is the ultimate girls’ getaway.
1. Unpack Once and Let Someone Else Handle the Details
Winter travel in Europe can be magical, but it usually comes with complications: cold train platforms, heavy coats, cobblestones, and the constant shuffle of luggage between hotels.
On this cruise, we unpacked once and let Viking do the rest. Of course, packing all of our purchases at the end of the cruise was a delightful challenge!
As we sailed from Basel to Amsterdam on a 7-night cruise, Viking Honir docked near the historic centers in most ports. Transportation was seamless and well-organized. One guided shore excursion in each port was included, with optional tours available for purchase for those who wanted to dig deeper. Each evening, after exploring Christmas markets and historic streets, we returned to the same warm cabin, no packing, no planning, no rushing.
For a girls’ trip, that simplicity makes all the difference.
2. The Ship: Comfortable, Festive, and Easy to Feel at Home
Viking’s longships strike a balance that feels especially right during the holidays. Clean Scandinavian design is accented with seasonal décor. Christmas trees, greenery, lights, and festive touches enhance the mood without overwhelming the space. Our Deluxe Balcony Cabin on Deck 3 had two twin beds, a small bathroom with a toilet and shower, and ample storage for all our belongings, making it a very comfortable home aboard Viking Honir.
The atmosphere onboard was relaxed and welcoming. Public areas encouraged conversation, whether over morning coffee or a glass of wine in the lounge. Open seating meant friendships formed naturally, and by the second day, familiar faces felt like travel companions rather than fellow passengers.
It was a ship that made it easy to settle in and connect. On this sailing, with fewer than 180 guests aboard, 125 were women of all ages.
3. Dining Onboard Felt Communal and Flexible
Meals on board were a highlight. Dining felt thoughtful rather than formal, with menus inspired by the regions we were visiting and featuring seasonal ingredients suited to winter travel. There is only one seating in the dining room, and there is no assigned seating. At each meal, we found a seat and met new friends. Women traveling in small groups of six or more usually sat together during meals.
After days filled with bratwurst, roasted chestnuts, stroopwafels, nougat, and too much mulled wine while ashore, it was comforting to return to well-prepared meals that felt balanced and unhurried. For a change, we enjoyed a few dinners on the quiet Aquavit Terrace, which accommodates only 20 guests per meal. Breakfasts and lunches were leisurely, and dinners often became noisy social events as stories from the day were shared around the tables.
For women traveling together, the meals and dining setup were ideal. It felt less like cruise dining and more like gathering for a family meal at the beginning or end of the day.
4. Entertainment That’s Festive Without Being Forced
Evenings onboard were low-key and enjoyable. Live music, holiday-themed activities, and casual events such as painting Christmas ornaments and a cooking demonstration featuring decorating our own gingerbread men.
Some nights were spent listening to music in the lounge, others chatting over wine, and sometimes simply retreating early after a full day ashore. The entertainment complemented the destinations rather than competing with them, ranging from a classical quartet to a pianist to lively nights of singing and dancing.
5. Destination Highlights That Feel Varied and Memorable
One of the joys of this itinerary was the mix of cities and smaller towns, each offering a different perspective on the season, without any pre-planning required on our part. Selecting shore excursions before and during the cruise was simple, but note that some fill up well ahead of departure.
Basel set the tone with Christmas markets spread across historic squares, glowing wooden stalls, and the comforting scent of raclette and roasted nuts in the air.
Strasbourg delivered classic Alsatian charm, but with our arrival on a weekend, it was very crowded. An optional excursion to Gengenbach offered something truly special. This small German town, with its half-timbered houses and famous Advent calendar built into the town hall, felt like stepping into a storybook—even in the rain. Under Viking’s oversized umbrellas, we wandered cobbled streets, sipped mulled wine, shared roasted chestnuts, and somehow found time for Black Forest cake in a cozy bakery café.
Cologne brought a burst of energy. Its Christmas markets, especially those near the cathedral, were lively and expansive. This was where shopping became serious business, with stalls overflowing with handcrafted ornaments, coo-coo clocks, and festive gingerbread, nougats, and candies that begged to come home.
Freiburg, near the Black Forest, felt warm and local. Its smaller market invited lingering rather than rushing, and the medieval streets glowing with lights made it one of my favorite places to simply wander without an agenda.
Our final destination in the Netherlands took us from the port of Dordrecht, where we took an optional excursion to Gouda—pronounced How-da, as we were quickly reminded. We made traditional stroopwafels, bought hand-crafted chocolate houses, and yes, bought wheels of cheese in sizes ranging from “sensible” to “we’ll figure it out later.”
Cruising the Rhine Gorge: Castles, Medieval towns, and Quiet Enjoyment
One morning, we didn’t wake up in a new city or hurry off to a Christmas market. Instead, we wrapped ourselves in warm jackets, grabbed mugs of hot chocolate, and headed out to the top deck as the ship cruised through the Rhine Gorge, one of the most scenic stretches of the entire journey.
This roughly 40-mile section of the Rhine is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with castles, medieval towns, and terraced vineyards perched dramatically above the river. We watched them appear and disappear through the morning mist, one after another, as Viking’s program director shared the stories behind them.
It was peaceful, cinematic, and completely unhurried, a reminder that sometimes the highlight of a Christmas cruise has nothing to do with shopping at all. Between markets and meals, this quiet sail through the Rhine Gorge felt like a collective exhale, and it remains one of my favorite memories of the entire cruise.
6. Shopping Before the Holidays—and the Joy of Collectible Mugs
For anyone who loves Christmas markets, this cruise is a dream.
Each market featured its own collectible mug, rented with your drink and returned, or not. We sampled white, red, and rosé mulled wines, each spiced a little differently, warming our hands around mugs that quickly became souvenirs with an emotional connection to each market. Comparing designs, debating which ones to keep, and carefully packing them alongside ornaments, chocolate houses, cookies, and cheese became part of the daily routine.
By the end of the cruise, many of us had checked off our holiday shopping and added a few meaningful keepsakes for ourselves. Women came prepared with tote bags and loads of extra space in their suitcases to haul home their Christmas shopping.
Final Thoughts: Why This Is Such a Great Girls’ Getaway
A Viking Christmas cruise on the Rhine delivers everything a girls’ getaway should: ease, comfort, festive energy, and shared experiences.
From unpacking once to sipping spiced mulled wine in collectible mugs to wandering medieval towns lit by Christmas lights, and to gliding past castles with hot chocolate in hand, this cruise turned the lead-up to Christmas into something magical and memorable.
If you’re looking for a holiday escape that blends beauty, simplicity, and just the right amount of indulgence, this is a girls’ getaway that’s hard to beat. I am excited to be planning another Christmas river cruise on the Danube next year!
Viking® has announced its support for the development of a new contemporary events pavilion at Highclere Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and the iconic filming location of Downton Abbey. This purpose-built space will replace the temporary marquee on the castle’s southwest lawn, providing an elegant setting for future events and guest experiences.
New Contemporary Events Space
The Viking Pavilion at Highclere Castle has been designed to complement the castle’s historic architecture while incorporating sustainable features, including solar panels and a heat exchanger system. Drawing inspiration from the celebrated 18th-century landscapes of Lancelot “Capability” Brown, the surrounding grounds will feature curving pathways, carefully planted trees, soft planting beds, and intimate seating areas, creating a harmonious transition between heritage and modernity.
“We have proudly partnered with Highclere Castle for more than a decade and are pleased to support this new project. Many of our guests were introduced to Highclere and Viking through Downton Abbey, and the castle will always hold a special place in our hearts,” said Karine Hagen, Viking’s Executive Vice President of Product. “Many of our guests have enjoyed Privileged Access to Highclere Castle, and this new pavilion will provide future visitors—including Viking travelers—a beautiful setting for enriching experiences at Highclere, while also helping to preserve this iconic landmark.”
“We are hugely grateful to Viking for this incredible collaboration, which enables us to create a truly special new space for our visitors and, of course, welcome many more Viking visitors,” said Lady Carnarvon. “This new building ensures Highclere can continue to share its history while securing the future of the castle for generations to come.”
The new pavilion will further enhance the visitor experience at Highclere and ensure the continued conservation of the estate. Viking guests will enjoy expanded opportunities to explore the castle’s rich history through Privileged Access experiences, including lectures and roundtable discussions hosted by Lady Carnarvon and other experts, inside the pavilion.
Viking & Highclere Castle
Viking’s corporate sponsorship of the celebrated series MASTERPIECE, which began in 2011, when Downton Abbey aired on PBS, helped establish Viking as a household name. This sponsorship continues today as part of Viking’s ongoing commitment to enriching cultural programming. Since 2014, Viking has offered guests a variety of ways to experience Privileged Access at Highclere Castle, with pre- and post-land extensions that include the highly-rated Oxford & Highclere Castle and Great Homes, Gardens & Gin extensions—both of which are available for guests on select river and ocean voyages. Additionally, the British Collections of Ancient Egypt land extension is available for guests on the popular Nile River itinerary, Pharaohs & Pyramids.
Lady Carnarvon has also welcomed viewers to Highclere Castle on Viking’s award-winning enrichment channel, Viking.TV. In her series, At Home at Highclere, she offers virtual Privileged Access to the historic home and its grounds. Viking’s close friendship with the Carnarvon family has also extended to its fleet—Lady Carnarvon is the ceremonial godmother of a Viking Longship, the Viking Skadi, and an ocean ship, the Viking Mars®. In 2022, Lord Carnarvon became Viking’s first godfather, fulfilling the role for the Viking Osiris, and in 2024, their son, the Honorable Edward Herbert, became the godfather of the Viking Hathor.
More information about Viking’s longstanding partnership with Highclere Castle can be found on the dedicated webpage, www.viking.com/highclere.

An international search effort is underway after a cruise guest went missing during a Mediterranean sailing aboard AIDAluna, prompting urgent appeals from family and friends across social media.
The missing woman, identified as Qin Dong, is a Chinese citizen and German resident who was travelling alone on a five-night cruise.
She boarded the AIDA Cruises ship in Palma de Mallorca on 10th December 2025, but was no longer onboard when the vessel returned to the Spanish port on Monday, 15th December.
AIDAluna’s itinerary included calls at Marseille, Palamos and Barcelona, with a sea day on Thursday, 11th December. The ship arrived in Marseille at around 8am on Friday, 12th December, which is the last confirmed day Dong was known to be onboard.
Disappearance Linked to Marseille Port Call
Cruise officials have confirmed that Dong boarded the ship in Palma de Mallorca shortly before midday on 10th December and did not officially disembark at any point during the voyage.
“Mrs. Dong has not officially disembarked from the ship since 10 December, as verified,” AIDA Cruises confirmed.
Onboard records indicate that Dong did not register an official disembarkation in Marseille. However, friends reportedly exchanged text messages with her at close to 8pm on 12th December, around two hours after AIDAluna had departed the French port.
This has led authorities to believe that Dong was not left behind ashore in Marseille, but instead went missing while still onboard the vessel later that evening.
No Emergency Alerts Reported Onboard
There have been no reports of emergency overboard alerts or onboard search operations during the voyage. It remains unclear whether Dong may have gone overboard, and there has been no confirmation of any incident triggering a ship-wide response.
Onboard account records show that Dong had minimal activity during the cruise, with only a single drink charged to her account. That purchase was an orange juice, with no alcohol recorded.
Since the ship’s return to Palma de Mallorca, family members and friends have been using social media to appeal for information from anyone who may have seen or interacted with Dong, particularly on 12th December.
“Even the smallest clue or memory could be crucial!” the appeals state.
Three Countries Involved in the Investigation
The case now involves authorities in three countries. French officials have been notified as the disappearance occurred while the ship was docked in Marseille.
Chinese authorities have been informed due to Dong’s citizenship, and German authorities have opened a case because AIDA Cruises is a German cruise line and Dong was residing in Germany.
AIDAluna continued its itinerary as planned, with no reported delays or route changes. The Sphinx-class ship has capacity for approximately 2,100 guests and around 600 crew members. It is currently operating cruises from Palma de Mallorca across the Mediterranean and to the Canary Islands, depending on sailing date.
Recent Cruise Disappearances Provide Mixed Comparisons
Dong’s disappearance comes amid several recent cases involving cruise guests initially reported missing, but later found.
In November 2025, a woman disappeared during a shore excursion in St Maarten while sailing aboard Holland America Line’s Rotterdam. In September 2025, another guest vanished in Bonaire during a cruise on Carnival Horizon.
Both individuals were later located after failing to return to their ships, with no foul play suspected, and neither wished to be contacted further.
However, there is a key difference in Dong’s case. Unlike those incidents, Dong did not officially disembark the ship, and there has been an immediate and coordinated effort by family and friends to locate her.
As the search continues, authorities are urging anyone who may have seen Dong onboard AIDAluna or has relevant information from the Marseille port call to come forward, as investigations remain ongoing.

Two well-known cruise ships have returned to service following extensive dry dock periods, unveiling a range of new venues, refreshed public spaces and upgraded guest experiences as they prepare for busy deployment schedules.
Princess Cruises’ Crown Princess and MSC Cruises’ MSC Magnifica have each completed significant refurbishment projects, signalling continued investment by both cruise lines in modernising older ships while keeping them competitive within their fleets.
Crown Princess Returns With New Entertainment and Casino Spaces
Crown Princess has completed a three-week dry dock in Singapore, which began on 29th November 2025 and required the cancellation of several voyages.
The 3,080-guest ship, which first entered service in 2006, has now re-joined the fleet with multiple guest-facing upgrades.
“Every drydock is an opportunity to elevate the guest experience, and Crown Princess’ latest enhancements reflect our ongoing commitment to evolve and modernize our onboard offerings,”
Lorna Warren, Princess Cruises Vice President, Hotel Operations and Guest Experience.
One of the most notable additions is O’Malley’s Irish Pub, now located on Deck 7. Replacing the former Wheelhouse Bar, the new venue offers live music, classic pub dishes and late-night bites, with seating for 134 guests, including 12 bar stools. O’Malley’s has already proven popular across several other Princess ships.
Gatsby’s Casino on Deck 6 has also been reimagined, featuring a redesigned casino bar, upgraded gaming equipment, new slot machine themes and an updated cashier area near the Princess Theater.
Meanwhile, the former Internet Café on Deck 5 has been transformed into an EFFY Lounge and High-End Vault. The space showcases jewellery from the New York-based brand and has been designed to host cocktail events and special occasions in a more contemporary setting.
In addition to these visible upgrades, Crown Princess also underwent routine technical maintenance, including propeller work and a fresh exterior paint job.
Following her return to service, Crown Princess departed Singapore on 19th December 2025 for a 16-night repositioning cruise to Brisbane, arriving on 4th January 2026.
She will spend the coming months sailing from Brisbane and Sydney to destinations across Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Vanuatu, before embarking on a 114-night world cruise in May 2026.
MSC Magnifica Completes Major Two-Month Refurbishment
MSC Magnifica has also re-entered service following a substantial two-month refurbishment that began in October, emerging from the Palumbo Malta Shipyard ahead of her winter season.
The 95,128-gross-ton ship, which has been sailing since 2010, now features several new dining and wellness upgrades.
Two popular speciality restaurants have been added: Butcher’s Cut, an American-style steakhouse serving premium meats and seafood, and Kaito Sushi Bar, offering sushi, soups and teriyaki dishes. Both venues are already well established across MSC’s newer ships.
The ship’s MSC Aurea Spa has been fully renovated and now includes a panoramic sauna, while fitness enthusiasts will find a new state-of-the-art gym equipped with Technogym equipment. A Gentleman’s Barber has also been introduced for guests seeking grooming services onboard.
Further enhancements are still to come. In 2026, MSC Magnifica will debut a significantly expanded MSC Yacht Club, featuring 63 suites, a new private sundeck, an exclusive restaurant, a Top Sail Lounge and the brand’s signature 24-hour butler and concierge service.
Following her refurbishment, MSC Magnifica immediately began an eight-day Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona on 17th December 2025. She will continue sailing in the region before departing Genoa on 5th January 2026 for a 132-day world cruise visiting 46 destinations across 33 countries.
The ship is also scheduled to operate another world cruise in 2027, followed by a further long voyage in 2028, underlining MSC’s confidence in the newly upgraded vessel.
Investment in Refreshed Ships Continues
The return of both Crown Princess and MSC Magnifica highlights how cruise lines are extending the life of mid-aged ships through targeted refurbishments rather than relying solely on newbuilds.
With new dining venues, refreshed public areas and premium experiences added, both ships are positioned to appeal to returning guests as well as first-time cruisers over the coming years.
