Passenger Dies After Going Overboard From Disney Wonder in Tasman Sea

A 73-year-old Australian man has died after going overboard from Disney Wonder while the ship was sailing across the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand.

Disney Wonder

The man, from Moonee Ponds in Melbourne, is believed to have “jumped” from the ship in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to a police statement. Authorities have confirmed his body has not been recovered.

Ship Turns Back for Search Operation

Disney Wonder altered course and launched a large-scale search and rescue operation after the incident.

According to reports from passengers and local media, the man is understood to have gone overboard at around 4:30 am, though many guests only became aware of the situation several hours later when the ship changed direction.

Crew members reportedly searched for around five hours, using specialist equipment including thermal imaging cameras, before the search was called off.

Passenger Mitch Talbot told Australian media:

“The captain came on and updated the boat and basically stated that there was someone, a passenger had fallen overboard … (but) that they were unable to find them. It was quite sombre and it was just a bit eerie for the rest of the day.”

Police Statement and Coroner Report

Victoria Police confirmed they are preparing a report for the Coroner, as is standard procedure in such cases.

Disney Wonder

A police spokesperson said the death is not being treated as suspicious, and confirmed that the man’s body has not yet been found.

Cruise Continues With Delayed Arrival

Following the unsuccessful search, Disney Wonder resumed its planned itinerary towards Auckland, New Zealand.

The ship is now expected to arrive later than originally scheduled, with passengers due to disembark later this week. However there are conflicting reports on how late the ship will be, with efforts to make up lost time.

At this time, Disney Cruise Line has not released a public statement beyond standard operational acknowledgements.

A Tragic Reminder of the Rarity, but Reality, of Overboard Incidents

Man overboard incidents remain rare in the cruise industry, but when they do occur, they typically trigger immediate and large-scale emergency procedures.

The mood onboard was described as subdued by several passengers, as crew and guests processed the seriousness of the situation.

The investigation remains ongoing, and a formal coroner’s report will follow in due course.

Cruisers React to Call for Volunteers

Every cruise ship has a medical facility.  And while no one wants to see the inside of one during a 7-day sailing, the truth of the matter is emergencies happen.

A recent social media post got a lot of attention after a cruiser asked if anyone else had “been on a cruise where blood donors were requested ship wide.”

Cruise Ship Bridge crew

The cruise guest had just gotten home from a sailing in which the captain announced on the intercom system that there had been a medical emergency.  Blood donors were requested to report to the medical facility but only if they had a blood donor card on them.

The Reddit user said the entire vibe on the ship changed after that and wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar situation.

Other Cruisers Share Their Own Experiences

Over 250 comments poured into the post as other veteran cruisers shared their own experiences with the call for blood donors on a ship.

One common theme was that very often a cruise ship had enough volunteers within minutes and that another announcement had to be made that no more donors were needed.

“It took all of 5 minutes, if that, after the cruise director made the announcement for him to come back on to announce there were plenty of volunteers and more were appreciated but not needed,” one user shared.

Another cruiser confirmed the desire for other passengers to help: “I had literally just made it to the elevator… There had to have been like 20 people already, they definitely didn’t need me. It was pretty cool to see people show up for a complete stranger like that, restored my faith in humanity a little bit.”

Specific Blood Types

The calls for blood are often for a very specific blood type. One cruiser remembered a 2 AM call during a Transatlantic voyage that went out specifically for “O positive blood.”  Another cruiser recalled an announcement for “O- or A-.”

And in some cases it was not just the blood type that mattered, but also whether or not the person had alcohol in their system.

One user stated, “Earlier this year – a call out went for my blood type and someone who hadn’t drunk alcohol for 24 hours and were younger than 50.”  The passenger said only about 10 people met that criteria and it was their first time giving blood.

In this particular case, it was a crew member who had suffered blood loss.  “It was pretty nice to help,” the blood donor stated, “Got personally called and thanked by practically every member of the senior staff including the captain, who offered us free drinks or whatever we might want.”

Another cruiser who was registered to help but wasn’t needed still received a “nice bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries to our room that night with a thank you letter” from the captain.

Saving a Life Comes First

On another cruise on Oasis of the Seas a comment reported that when a medical airlift failed, the captain “put all engines online and we would go to our planned port… all out.” Later, the captain admitted that the rush cost about $75,000, saying that saving a life comes first, no matter the price.

The Importance of the Donor Card

Most comments to the post mentioned that a blood donor card was required. Cruisers pointed out a few reasons for this.

It proves blood type, confirms recent health screening, and often verifies that the person has donated within a specific timeframe, such as the last six months.

This requirement is especially challenging because, as one user noted, “It was mid morning so many people had been drinking by then,” further limiting the eligible pool.

For those who travel light, digital solutions are a great option. As one cruiser shared, virtual donor cards available through apps “may have virtual donor cards that you can add to your phone wallet. It has your name, blood type & donor ID.” This practice is usually accepted by ship medical staff.

Wonder of the Seas cruise ship

Bottom Line

For many, the cruisers post was a reminder to bring their blood donor card with them or at least find a digital option to keep a copy on their phone.   It’s definitely something that should be added to the packing list of every cruiser who is a blood donor.

For others, the stories of how fast other cruisers come to the aid of a stranger at sea was reassuring.

“Everyone I’ve talked to about those incidents after they happened…said that even when they themselves went to lend theirs, there was already an overabundance of volunteers…rest assured on a floating city of thousands of people, their request is almost IMMEDIATELY met,” one user shared.

Carnival Gives Guests an Extra 3 Months to Prepare for New Loyalty Rewards Program

Carnival Cruise Line just announced that guests will have an extra three months to prepare for the new Carnival Rewards program that was introduced earlier in the year.   Instead of going into effect on June 1, 2026, the program has been pushed back to September 1, 2026.Carnival Celebration cruise ship at sea

ID 256045063 | Carnival Cruise Ship © Jouni Niskakoski | DreamstimeThe email from Carnival also stated that “all your cruise activity through August 31, 2026 will count toward your final VIFP status, which will become your starting status in Carnival Rewards.”

With this new update, the entire Summer 2026 sailing season will now count under the old rules, which is a big deal for anyone still scrambling to reach the next loyalty tier before the rules change.

If you have a cruise booked for June, July, or August of 2026, those days will still count toward your final legacy status. For cruisers who are close to hitting Platinum or Diamond, this extra time might be all you need to reach that next tier.

More Time for a Head Start

You basically have a three-month extension to lock in those higher tiers before the new spend-based system takes over.

If you reach Diamond, you lock in that status for life and you never have to requalify. If you reach Platinum, you get a permanent ‘head start’ of 10,000 bonus stars every two years (at the start of every cycle).  This makes requalifying easier and makes sure you don’t drop back down to Gold.

“When Carnival Rewards begins on September 1, 2026, your new status will match your VIFP status on August 31, 2026, and will last through December 31, 2028,” the email stated.

Carnival Magic cruise ship

A Few New Details

The announcement from Carnival also clarified some details about the new points system that might make things a bit more complicated. Carnival stated that under the new program, the value of your rewards points will vary.

The update stated that 100 points will be worth approximately $1, but that value will depend on demand, “similar to how cruise fares vary”.

This means the points system will work somewhat like dynamic pricing. If you want to redeem your points for a drink or an excursion on a busy holiday sailing, it could cost you more points than it would on a quieter sailing in the off-season.

Carnival also stated that points will never expire as long as you earn or redeem them at least once every 3 years.

Longer Window the First Cycle

To help everyone adjust to these changes, Carnival is also simplifying the calendar. Once the program officially launches in September 2026, it will eventually run on a standard January to December schedule, every 2 years.

But to bridge the gap, the first earning period will be a long one.  The first cycle will run from September 1, 2026, all the way through December 31, 2028. That gives you a 28-month window to earn your status for the following years.

This extra-long cycle is likely designed to give everyone plenty of time to get used to earning “Stars” based on spending rather than just days at sea.  Remember, stars are what will determine your status level

How to Earn: Stars and Points

Earning Stars (For Status)

You collect these to reach Gold, Platinum, or Diamond. They reset every 2 years.

  • Base Rate: You earn 3 Stars for every $1 spent on Carnival (cruises & onboard spend).
  • Casino Rate: You earn 1 Star for every casino point.
  • Credit Card Boost: If you use the Carnival card (coming in September 2026), you earn 1 extra Star per $1 on Carnival purchases (Total: 4 Stars per $1).

Earning Points (For Free Stuff)

You spend these like cash on drinks, excursions, or future cruises.

  • Base Rate: You earn 3 Points for every $1 spent on Carnival.
  • Casino Rate: You earn 1 Point for every casino point.
  • Credit Card Boost: If you use the Carnival card, you earn 3 extra Points per $1 on Carnival purchases (Total: 6 Points per $1).
  • Everyday Spend with Carnival card: You earn 2 Points +1 star per $1 at grocery stores/restaurants and 1 Point per $1 everywhere else.

So, to break it down, if you spend $100 on a shore excursion this would be an example:

  • Paying with cash/debit: You get 300 Stars (Status) and 300 Points (Rewards).
  • Paying with Carnival Card: You get 400 Stars (Status) and 600 Points (Rewards).

Bottom Line

I know it’s a bit confusing when trying to wrap your head around this new reward system, and it’s much different than just counting the number of days on a cruise to determine how many points you have. Perhaps this is why Carnival is giving a few extra months to get used to this new program.

With so many cruisers reaching higher tiers in the legacy loyalty program, something had to be done. After all, when half the ship is getting priority boarding, it’s just the same as regular boarding. The new system is more spend-based and also introduces the cruise line’s new credit card. There was some major backlash when the new program was first rolled out, but hopefully loyal cruisers will be happy with the benefits of the new rollout as time goes on.

Late Cruise Passenger Sparks Backlash After Gestures in Ensenada

A cruise guest who returned late to her ship in Ensenada, Mexico, has gone viral after being filmed making offensive gestures towards fellow passengers watching from onboard.

The incident, shared on social media, shows an unidentified woman walking slowly towards the gangway while raising her middle finger at guests gathered on open decks and balconies.

The footage was reportedly captured during a recent Carnival cruise call in Ensenada.

What Happened on the Pier

According to passengers who witnessed the scene, the woman arrived well after the advertised “all aboard” time and was part of a small group returning late to the ship.

“This lady was the last to board in Ensenada and spent even more time flipping everyone off,” one passenger wrote in a post shared on Reddit.

Other guests said that two passengers ahead of her had sprinted back to the ship and were met with cheers after shouting apologies to those onboard.

Imagine the ship waiting for you and you’re still a jerk
byu/OpinionatedMinion inCarnivalCruiseFans

The final pair, however, were met with boos due to their behaviour.

“I was here booing them… It was a group of four, the first two ran so we started cheering them and these two were flipping us off and getting booed. Think it was about 20 minutes past the time we were supposed to depart,” another cruise guest commented.

While the ship has not been officially confirmed, the sailing is believed to have been Carnival Firenze, which visited Ensenada on 17th November 2025.

Why ‘Pier Running’ Is So Controversial

So-called “pier running” has long been a flashpoint among cruise passengers. The term refers to guests who return to the ship at the very last minute, or even after departure time, often forcing a delay.

There’s often an almost pantomime element to these instances – people who are gathered on open decks to watch the ship sail away will cheer as the pier runners make their return as a light-hearted way of embarrassing the late guests, typically without it being mean-spirited.

And while some late arrivals are cheered as light entertainment, the reality is that delays can disrupt sailing schedules, increase port costs and cause frustration for thousands of guests who returned on time.

Industry rules are strict. If passengers are not back before the all-aboard time, ships will usually sail without them, unless they are on a cruise line organised excursion.

Could There Be Consequences?

Carnival Cruise Line, like most cruise operators, enforces a Code of Conduct that governs guest behaviour. Breaching it can result in onboard fines, restrictions or even removal from the ship in serious cases.

It is not known whether any action was taken against the guest involved in this incident.

Pier runners may be spoken to by crew members to remind them of their responsibilities – the antagonistic approach of these runners could get them a sterner talking-to.

Online reaction to the video has been overwhelmingly critical, with many saying the behaviour crossed a line.

“I wonder if she is drunk? If I was security I would be kicking her off the ship for doing that and making the ship wait on her,” one commenter wrote.

Another joked that they would have been tempted to hurry the gangway up themselves.

A Risky Game

Beyond etiquette, returning late is a genuine risk. Guests who miss their ship must organise their own transport to the next port of call or back home, often at significant personal expense.

In this case, the guest was fortunate to make it back onboard. The reaction from fellow passengers, however, shows that being late is one thing but the attitude shown afterwards can leave an even worse impression.

For most experienced cruisers, the unwritten rule remains simple: enjoy the port time, but be back early and let the drama stay on shore.

Star Princess Impresses From Bow to Stern

I recently had the opportunity to take a three-night cruise to The Bahamas on Princess Cruises’ newest ship, Star Princess.

Star Princess

Princess Cruises invited me and my family to sail on the inaugural cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I walked away impressed by the ship, changes Princess made since the first ship in the class, and by the crew.

While I was on the ship, I wrote about my first impressions of Star Princess that you can read here.

Let’s take a look at the different areas of the ship and the cruise that impressed me.

Changes Princess Made

The cruise line made several changes on Star Princess from the first ship in the fleet, Sun Princess. The addition of a sports court on the top deck was much needed and is a great space for kids to play. It’s a great size and has everything from basketball to pickleball to cornhole.

sports court star princess

One of the biggest complaints I had on Sun Princess was the lack of self-service drink stations in the Eatery (buffet). I really liked the stations they added between the Eatery and Americana Diner on Star Princess. There is tons of space and was never crowded at all. It’s perfect when you just want a quick drink of water.

Another great change Princess made was adding a non-smoking casino that is away from the main casino. Many times cruise lines add a non-smoking section that’s part of the main casino but smoke just flows right into the non-smoking side.

The non-smoking casino is on the other side of the Piazza and takes the place of where a shop is on Sun Princess.

Firefly Park

Since my wife and five year old son came with me on the cruise, we were excited about getting first hand experience of what Princess offers for kids.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect going in. While families do travel on Princess, they carry far less than the mainstream cruise lines. My son has cruised on five different cruise lines, and this was his first on Princess Cruises.

Firefly Park is the kids club for children his age on Star Princess. Since we embarked on the ship a day before the cruise for the christening ceremony, I was able to walk around the club, since no kids were in it, and see everything that the club offers.

The first thing I noticed was the size of the club, it was much bigger than the club on one of the largest cruise lines that we sailed on last year.

firefly park

Besides little crafts they made (including a cruise ship), they gave him this swishy ball when we picked him up one night that he still plays even though we’re home.

To say that he loved the Firefly Park would be an understatement. He normally walks really slow anywhere he goes. The last night when we were heading to drop him off, we couldn’t keep up with him he was walking so fast.

It was by far his favorite place on the ship and I believe it’s an area most kids will enjoy.

The workers in Firefly Park were nothing short of amazing, they remembered by son’s name every time they saw him. They also said he was “really good at Mario Kart”, that’s my boy!

Another nice surprise was the kids area on Princess Cays, the cruise line’s private island that we stopped at during the cruise. It had a place for kids to play and even a small swimming pool for them.

Spellbound

spellbound

Spellbound is by far my favorite space on board Star Princess. Spellbound comes from a partnership with the Magic Castle and Princess and is only found on one other cruise ship (Sun Princess).

Princess made a few changes to this space, but I’ll just talk about one of them. Afterall, somethings are best enjoyed when you experience them firsthand. They added a table with four chairs for close-up magic right when you walk in. This was much needed as the bar could get crowded, especially with a magician performing there.

spellbound

Magician and mentalist Mark Gibson was on our sailing and he put on a 15 minute show in the intimate theater in Spellbound. I’ve seen him perform before and he’s one of the best I’ve seen.

During the sailing, I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with the president of Magic Castle, Erika Larsen. In our short conversation, I was able to see her love and passion for magic and it’s one of the reasons why this space is so unique. This is not just a magic venue, it was created by the most exclusive magic club in the world.

If you love sleight of hand, card tricks, or just having your mind blown, Spellbound is a place that you will enjoy.

Crew

I can’t say enough good things about the crew on Star Princess. I wasn’t on the ship more than 15 minutes before one of them remembered me from a previous cruise.

From our room steward to those who worked in specialty restaurants, they really know how to make sure you have a great cruise.

I’d also like to give a special shoutout to Farral who works at Crooners, he’s one of the best on board Star Princess.

Food

Food can be extremely subjective, we all have different tastes and preferences. Two of my favorites on Star Princess was dining at Crown Grill, the steakhouse on board, and Alfredo’s Pizzeria. They both have my favorite steak and pizza at sea.

However, I would be remiss if I did not mention Butcher’s Block by Dario. The meat there is so good and you will want to come hungry when you dine there.

Even though cruise lines, including Princess, are moving to more paid specialty dining, I thought there was still a good amount of complimentary food (included in your cruise fare) all around the ship.

My son loved going to the International Cafe each night to get a snack before bed. It’s open 24/7 and it’s nice having a spot always open where you get get a bite if you are hungry.

International Cafe Star Princess

Also, Lido Slice on the pool deck is great for pizza, tacos, burgers and salads when you just want something casual.

One feature I wish the Princess app had was dining times. We could not find anywhere in the app that told you what was open. Thankfully, Princess left us a paper copy of Princess Patter (daily schedule) in our cabin each day. So if you’re reading this Princess, please add that to the app (it was in the old app).

Dome

dome star princess

This is another one of the unique features on Star Princess that you won’t find on any other class of ships in the world.

During the day, it’s a quieter spot to relax in a climate controlled environment.  At night, entertainment takes place here including the Candlelight Concert which was loved by all.

dome star princess

Tip: There isn’t a ton of seating here so you will want to arrive early.

The Dome is going to be extremely popular when the ship sails to Alaska next summer. You will be able to watch the glaciers without being outside in the cold.

Final Thoughts

I would sail on Star Princess again without even a second thought. Princess made some good changes that made this class of ships even better. I’ve always really liked this class, just thought they need a few tweaks, which Princess has done.

I love how the buffet is off of the Piazza instead of being right off the pool deck. The Sphere allows you to look out at the water when you are in the Piazza.

There was a great variety of entertainment on the ship that ranged from production shows in the theater to comedian Ken Boyd, who was really funny.

The Ocean Medallion sets Princess apart from every other cruise line. From being able to track where your family is on the ship at all times to your cabin door automatically unlocking as you walk up to it, I’d prefer it any day over a traditional key card.

With all of that being said, I will have more on Star Princess in the near future so stay tuned.

Carnival Delays Launch of New Rewards Programme Until September 2026

Carnival Cruise Line has pushed back the start of its new Carnival Rewards loyalty programme, giving returning guests more time to qualify for higher status under the current VIFP Club system.

Carnival Rewards

The programme will now launch on 1st September 2026, instead of the previously announced date of 1st June 2026.

In an email to guests, the cruise line said the delay was designed to give summer sailings time to count toward existing loyalty tiers.

“To give you extra time – and to let your Summer 2026 cruises count toward your final VIFP Club® status – we are moving the launch of Carnival Rewards to September 1, 2026,

“All your cruise activity through August 31, 2026 will count toward your final VIFP status, which will become your starting status in Carnival Rewards.”

Extra Time to Chase Higher Status

The delay means guests can continue earning VIFP points through the peak summer 2026 cruise season, giving those close to the next tier a better chance of upgrading before the new system begins.

This has been particularly important for high-level Platinum guests aiming to reach Diamond status.

Carnival cruise diamond vifp card

Once Carnival Rewards launches, Diamond will be the only lifetime tier, a decision the cruise line confirmed earlier this year. All other loyalty levels will need to be re-earned on an ongoing basis.

Carnival has also been running double and triple points offers on selected sailings, and these promotions may continue to help guests move up the ranks before the switchover.

Two-Year Earning Cycles Confirmed

Alongside the delay, Carnival has confirmed how the new status system will work.

Loyalty will be earned in two-year cycles, running from 1st January to 31st December. However, the very first earning period will be longer than normal.

The opening cycle will run from 31st August 2026 to 31st December 2028. The stars earned during this period will decide a guest’s status for the following phase, from 1st January 2029 to 31st December 2031.

How Stars Will Be Earned

Under the new system, guests will earn stars based on their spending:

  • 3 stars for every $1 spent on cruise fare
  • 3 stars for every $1 spent onboard
  • 1 star for every casino point earned
Carnival Rewards Points Earning

Guests using the Carnival Rewards Mastercard will earn 4 stars per $1 for cruise fares and onboard purchases, with no change to casino earnings.

Status thresholds have been confirmed as:

  • Gold: 10,000 stars
  • Platinum: 50,000 stars
  • Diamond: 100,000 stars

While Gold and Platinum must be re-earned every two years, Diamond status will be kept for life.

Points Will Work Separately From Status

In addition to stars, guests will earn points that can be spent on rewards. These are tracked separately from loyalty status.

Points will be earned as follows:

  • 3 points per $1 spent on cruise fare and onboard purchases
  • 1 point per casino point earned
  • Extra points for everyday spending when using the Carnival Rewards Mastercard

Carnival has said that around 100 points will equal about $1 in value, although actual redemption values may vary.

Points can be used towards onboard extras such as:

  • Drinks packages
  • Speciality dining
  • Spa treatments
  • Photos
  • Shore excursions

Unlike stars, these points will not expire, as long as the guest earns or redeems points at least once every three years.

What This Means for Guests

The delayed launch gives Carnival loyalists a longer runway to secure their preferred VIFP status before the new rules take effect.

While the new system moves away from purely sailing-based loyalty and towards spend-based rewards, guests will still be able to build up valuable onboard credit-style points for future cruises.

For many, the additional time could make the difference between starting Carnival Rewards as Platinum or locking in lifetime Diamond status before the door closes.

Man Overboard Alert on Carnival Radiance Turns Out to Be False Alarm

An emergency alert was activated aboard Carnival Radiance on 20th November 2025 after passengers reported hearing a loud splash while the ship was sailing off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico.

The incident prompted an immediate search and rescue response, before being confirmed as a false alarm when all guests and crew were successfully accounted for.

Search Operation Launched at Sea

Several passengers reported hearing a splash near the stern of the ship and believed someone may have gone overboard.

According to comments shared by guests on board, the ship slowed and turned around to revisit the location where the splash had been seen.

Cruise tracking data later confirmed that the vessel altered course to conduct a search.

One passenger described the situation as tense, saying the ship “turned around and slowly cruised back over the area” while the crew investigated.

Full Headcount Completed

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that standard emergency procedures were followed.

During the investigation, guests were asked to return to their cabins while crew members carried out a full headcount.

“The Carnival Radiance crew responded to a potential overboard alert off the coast north of Ensenada, Mexico when some guests reported hearing a splash in the water. The ship returned to the area where there was a potential sighting of an individual to conduct a rescue operation.

“In the meantime, the crew completed a full guest and crew headcount as is our standard safety protocol and all guests and crew have been accounted for.”

Carnival spokesperson

No one was found to be missing.

Likely Cause: Wildlife Splash

While the original reports suggested a person may have fallen into the water, crew members later determined that no one had gone overboard.

The splash that triggered the alert is believed to have been caused by marine wildlife. The waters off the Baja Peninsula, particularly around Ensenada, are well known for whale activity, especially during winter migration seasons.

Grey and humpback whales are commonly seen in the area.

No Impact to Cruise Itinerary

The situation was resolved within approximately 40 minutes and the ship resumed normal sailing shortly afterwards.

There was no change to Carnival Radiance’s itinerary. The 4-night Baja cruise, which departed Long Beach on 17th November 2025, returned on schedule on 21st November 2025.

A Reminder of Onboard Safety Protocols

While the incident proved to be a false alarm, cruise industry procedures require all reports of possible overboard situations to be taken seriously.

Passengers are always encouraged to report anything unusual immediately. Crew members are trained to respond quickly, even if the situation later turns out to be harmless.

In this case, fast action ensured the safety of everyone on board, with minimal disruption to the voyage.
