Immersive LEDs & “Pop-Up” Shows

As an invited guest on Celebrity Xcel, I recently had the chance to explore the ship for two days and see first-hand what the new “Eden replacement” was all about.

From the new unique scents of the tunnel to the transformative LED panels that bring the destinations to life, I was blown away by just how different this space is.

The Bazaar on Celebrity Xcel

Celebrity Cruises has transformed the multi-deck, aft-end space on its newest vessel, Celebrity Xcel, replacing the popular Eden venue with a totally new concept called The Bazaar.

This change reflects a philosophy noted by Celebrity Cruises: to eliminate the line between the ship and the shore, making the destination the star of the entire cruise experience.  To highlight this even more, the theme in the Bazaar will rotate between four festivals: Carnival, Aqua, Viva, and Flora.

The Journey to The Bazaar

I’ve always loved the aft space on an Edge-class ship with Celebrity Cruises.  The views out the back windows are incredible, and the gradual inclined walkway that wraps around the aft offers great views of both the inside and outside of the ship.

But Celebrity always made a point for the journey to this part of the ship to be just as important as the destination.  The tunnel walkway to Eden was always an unexpected intrigue to first timers on the ship.

On Celebrity Xcel, the tunnel to The Bazaar is even more immersive, and it changes depending on the festival.

The tunnel walkway to the Bazaar is full of immersive smells and sights as you walk through the LED panel archways.

The intent is to fully immerse passengers in the cultures, sights, sounds, smells, flavors, and traditions of the ports the ship visits. It’s a complete evolution of the aft-end venue, shifting to an ever-changing marketplace and festival space.

Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, described the experience as a “journey,” starting with the entrance:

“So, it’s starting the journey through the tunnel, and you get the smell, you get like, kind of a sense with the projection as to what’s waiting ahead of you… So you get this technology piece, but then you get the tactile piece.”

This approach uses sensory elements like unique scents crafted for each theme, LED projections, and reflective surfaces to immediately transport guests into the atmosphere of the day’s theme.

I only experience two themes during my cruise—Aqua and Carnival—and I must say, I loved the fresh aromas in the tunnel.  They were present enough to notice them but light enough not to be overwhelmed.

I heard several people on the cruise say they wanted to buy bottles of the aroma to bring back home.  These scents were specifically crafted by Celebrity’s team, and combined with the moving artwork on the LED archways it created a real build-up to the main venue.

Market at The Bazaar

The Market at the Bazaar

On other Edge-class ships, the area after the tunnel leads to a Chocolatier and some boutique shops.  On Celebrity Xcel there is the all-new Market at the Bazaar.  But this isn’t just a normal market.

These are products sold by local artisans depending on the location or destination of the ship.  So, if the ship is sailing to the Caribbean, you will have crafted goods and items sold by people who live in that area.

Local artisans will also be welcomed on board the ship when the vessel is in port, so cruisers will have a chance to interact with local vendors right on the ship.  The cruise line is still working with local ports to get all of the logistics of that figured out, but it’s a concept unlike any other I’ve seen on a cruise ship.

A Palate Cleanser Before the Wow

Red Pallet cleanser to the Bazaar

Before walking into the official Bazaar area there is one more transition on the ship.  The design incorporates a moment of calm, which Laura Hodges Bethge affectionately refers to as the “palate cleanser.”

As guests transition from the immersive entrance to the main space, they walk through an area described as a deep, vibrant red. There’s a sort of neutralizing scent in the air here as well.

“This is the palate cleanser when you walk into that red center, because you’ve just been immersed in all of these… experiences, and then you go into the wow,” Hodges Bethge said.

More Photos of Celebrity Xcel

The Bazaar

The Bazaar on Celebrity Xcel

The festival theme for the Bazaar is apparent from the moment you walk in.  Huge LED archways and ceiling formations display the vibrant colors and moving artwork. Decorations (which have to be swapped out for each festival) line the columns, tables, and walls that reinforce the theme as well.

There’s even a giant screen on the wall that displays the theme of the day, and it changes depending on the time.   One night I saw a large full moon displayed on the huge wall screen, illuminating the area.

In addition to the décor, there are several carts around the Bazaar with different crafts and activities cruisers can enjoy.  And again, they are all themed with the festival.

The Bazaar on Celebrity Xcel (4)
Aqua and Carnival festivals pictured.

Throughout the day entertainment in the form of “Pop-up” shows take place as well.  Once again, the costumes, music, and style of the entertainment all match the festival theme.

These shows are not listed in the daily schedule though, so you just have to show up at the Bazaar and wait to see what happens.   You don’t have to wait very long before one of these variety shows to pop up.  They only last for a few minutes, so you can grab something to eat at Spice Café right next door and have a seat.

Spice Cafe

Spice Cafe in The Bazaar on Celebrity Xcel

I found myself constantly walking into Spice Cafe to see what kinds of treats I could find, and I never walked away disappointed (unless they were closed, so you have to check the operational hours).

Spice Cafe is the complimentary, casual dining venue at the Bazaar. It replaces the former Eden Cafe found on other Edge-class vessels.

Operating primarily for breakfast and lunch (and some snack times from 2:00pm to 4:00pm), the Spice Cafe offers a rotating menu inspired by the places the ship visits.

There are all kinds of wonderful snacks and treats to enjoy, including protein bowls, paninis, cold cuts, salads, hot soups, quesadillas, yogurts, cakes, and a whole lot more, in addition to daily carvings.  And of course, you can grab a cup of specialty coffee here as well.

The culinary variety supports the Bazaar’s four rotating festival themes, so it’s another area where the true emphasis of the cruise line is on the destination.

Spice Cafe seating at Bazaar on Celebrity Xcel

I loved the seating area for Spice Cafe too.  On other Edge-class ships there is a seating area that’s outside, but on Xcel it’s more like a little solarium.  It did get a little warm on a sunny day and if there’s a lot of people in there the noise can be a bit much because it bounces off all the glass, but it’s still such an inviting space to enjoy a delicious eat from Spice.  It was one of my go-to spots on the ship.

Mosaic

Mosaic Restaurant on Celebrity Xcel

Mosaic is the new fine dining option just a level below the main action at The Bazaar, and it offers some of the best ocean views at the huge aft-facing windows.  It’s an open kitchen design, and the multi-course menu is also destination-inspired, so it will change based on the ship’s location and itinerary.  As you can see, this is a theme throughout this new venue on the ship.  Dining at Mosaic is an extra charge, and there’s also a Chef’s Table experience for some of the most exquisite dishes the ship has to offer.

Four Festivals of The Bazaar

The core of The Bazaar is a rotating schedule of destination-inspired festivals. For the Caribbean sailings, four festival themes have been developed: Carnival, Aqua, Viva, and Flora. Guests on a typical seven-night cruise will get to experience three of these themes.

  • Caribbean Focus: These festivals are currently Caribbean-focused, inspired by traditions from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and other regions.
  • Mediterranean Focus: When the Celebrity Xcel repositions to the Mediterranean, The Bazaar will completely transform to feature festivals, markets, and culinary experiences aligned with European destinations.
Seating around ramp at Bazaar on Celebrity Xcel
Some really comfy seating at The Bazaar around the gradually sloping ramp.

Each festival features local artisans selling handcrafted goods, hands-on craft classes (like jewelry making or paper decorations), dance classes, live music, and regional food and beverage tastings, allowing guests to touch, feel, smell, and taste the destination while at sea.

The goal, as was emphasized by Celebrity, is to involve all of the senses in experiencing destinations even while still on the ship.

By creating this “immersive experience” where the destination is brought directly onboard through sight, sound, and flavor, Celebrity Cruises is directly addressing the core reason people book a cruise: to explore the world.

While a Carnival cruise ship was docked in Cozumel today, a lifeboat broke off and fell into the water.

The lifeboat fell off Carnival Dream shortly after 12:00pm while the ship was docked in Cozumel, Mexico. Carnival Cruise Line told Cruise Fever that no one was injured during the incident.

Parts of the lifeboat were still attached to the ship while the majority of it floated over to the pier.

Gail Faust posted photos of the incident on X just a few minutes ago. They can be seen below.

Brian C also posted photos on X showing the lifeboat floating in the water with parts of it still attached to the ship.

Cruise Radio posted a video on Facebook showing the lifeboat floating up against the pier.

Carnival Dream is currently on a six-night cruise from Galveston, Texas with port stops in Costa Maya, Belize City and Cozumel. The ship is scheduled to arrive back in Galveston on Friday. Cozumel is the last port stop on the cruise.

Cruise Fever reached out to Carnival Cruise Line about the incident and was given the following statement:

“The team on Carnival Dream was conducting an unmanned test of lowering one of the lifeboats when a latch got caught on one of the cables, resulting in the vessel hanging from one end then falling into the water below. No one was injured.”

Shocking Twist In Anna Kepner Cruise Ship Death: FBI Investigating Teen Stepbrother – Cruise Addicts

Overview — An 18-year-old high school student, identified as Anna Kepner, was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon while the ship was on a Caribbean cruise; preliminary reporting has raised the possibility of foul play and prompted an FBI review of the incident.

Anna Kepner, 18, was pronounced dead while the Carnival Horizon was at sea on Friday, November 7. The ship docked in Miami the next day, and federal agents began an inquiry; officials have not yet publicly released a cause of death.

An unrelated court filing obtained by the Daily Mail notes that Shauntel Hudson — who recently married Anna’s father, Chris Kepner — filed a motion on Nov. 17 asking for more time to respond to divorce-related filings and cited an “extremely sensitive and severe circumstance.”

Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) Case

A court filing cited in reporting states: “Currently there is an investigation being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) arising out of the sudden death of eighteen-year-old Anna Kepner,” and notes Hudson was advised that “a criminal case may be initiated against one” of her minor children.

The filing adds that any testimony from the respondent could be “prejudicial to her or her adolescent child in this pending criminal investigation,” and therefore the respondent cannot be compelled to testify — language commonly used to protect parents and minors during active probes.

NBC News reports that a separate Nov. 18 filing identifies Hudson’s teenage son as a suspect; that report and the court documents should be consulted directly for exact wording, and it is essential to note that identification in a filing is not the same as criminal charges filed by prosecutors.

Timeline — What happened

According to reporting, Anna Kepner complained of feeling ill on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 6, and returned to her cabin; the following morning, a member of the ship’s housekeeping staff discovered her and reported she had been found dead in the cabin. Sources cited by outlets say she was found under the bed, wrapped in a blanket, and with life jackets nearby. These are details from initial reports and should be confirmed with the official investigation and any medical examiner findings.

Anna, a high school senior and cheerleader in Titusville, Florida, was traveling with her father, his new wife (her stepmother), and three stepsiblings. Her father, Chris Kepner, told the press that “everybody was questioned” after the ship docked and that investigators removed everyone from the vessel as part of the inquiry. He described Anna as “an 18‑year‑old, beautiful young girl” with a whole life ahead of her; her obituary similarly recalls a bubbly, outgoing teen who “loved her siblings deeply.”

Sources and Next Steps

Initial accounts (Daily Mail and other outlets) provided details of the scene and the timeline; Carnival Cruise Line has said it is supporting the family and cooperating with federal investigators. As this is an active matter, the official cause of death and any medical examiner report are not public in these reports. Those documents and any subsequent court filings or prosecutor statements should be consulted for authoritative information about the death and whether investigators have moved from inquiry to a formal criminal case.

Carnival Cruise Line released a brief statement to ABC News saying, “Our focus is on supporting the family of our guest and cooperating with the FBI.” The company confirmed the passenger’s death and said it is assisting investigators as they review the incident on the Carnival Horizon cruise.

Where The Reporting Stands

Officials have not publicly released a cause of death or any medical examiner findings, and no public prosecutor has announced criminal charges tied to the matter. The court filings referenced in media reports indicate that investigators have discussed the possibility of initiating a criminal case involving one minor child in the household.

Still, filings and news reporting are not the same as a criminal charging decision. We will update this story as court records, medical examiner reports, or law enforcement statements become available.

Carnival Dream Lifeboat Crashes Into Water During Routine Test in Cozumel

Part of the orange canopy remains torn and still attached to the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the cause in a statement.

“The team on Carnival Dream was conducting an unmanned test of lowering one of the lifeboats when a latch got caught on one of the cables, resulting in the vessel hanging from one end then falling into the water below. No one was injured.”

Major Structural Damage

Images show the lifeboat’s hull heavily compromised, including what appears to be a large vertical crack along the stern.

Nearby lifeboats – Numbers 1 and 5 – do not appear to be damaged, and there is no visible impact on Carnival Dream’s hull.

Routine lifeboat tests are common while a ship is safely alongside. These checks include lowering and raising boats, testing davits, and practising emergency procedures without passengers present.

Will Carnival Dream Be Allowed to Sail?

The incident raises an important operational question: can Carnival Dream legally leave port with one lifeboat out of service?

Cruise ships are required to carry enough functioning lifeboats and life rafts for everyone onboard, including guests and crew. While vessels typically carry more capacity than required, each ship must still meet strict international safety standards.

It is not yet known whether Carnival Dream’s remaining lifeboat capacity meets that threshold, or whether additional inspections will be needed before departure.

With the damaged craft clearly unusable for rescues or evacuation, further checks on neighbouring lifeboats are likely.

Carnival Dream is currently docked in Cozumel alongside several other vessels, including Regal Princess, MSC Seashore, Icon of the Seas, Carnival Breeze, Celebrity Eclipse, and Seven Seas Splendor.

Not the First Lifeboat Mishap

While unusual, lifeboat accidents do happen.

In December 2022, a lifeboat fell from Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas during tendering operations in the South Pacific.

No one was injured and the ship’s itinerary continued, albeit with slower tender operations for the day.

Lifeboats serve multiple functions beyond emergency evacuation:

  • tendering guests ashore in ports without piers
  • assisting in man-overboard searches
  • rescuing refugees or persons in distress at sea

Because of this, any damage to a lifeboat is taken extremely seriously by both cruise lines and maritime safety authorities.

Two Carnival Ships Hit By Propulsion Issues

Carnival Corporation is dealing with propulsion issues on two major ships across its fleet, with Carnival Horizon and Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 both forced to adjust itineraries, delay operations and compensate guests after significant mechanical difficulties.

Carnival Horizon and Queen Mary 2

Carnival Horizon: Delays, Missed Flights and Ongoing Speed Restrictions

Carnival Horizon’s problems began during her 8-night Southern Caribbean sailing, which was due back into PortMiami on Sunday 16th November.

Carnival Horizon Ship Aerials with Blue Hull

The Vista-class ship developed a propulsion fault late in the cruise, leaving her unable to reach normal operating speed.

The delay stretched past eight hours, wreaking havoc on guests’ post-cruise travel plans. Many missed flights and pre-booked transfers, and some were left scrambling for last-minute hotels or rebooking fees.

Two days later, Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy issued a formal apology by email, acknowledging the disruption:

“On behalf of the entire Carnival team, I am extending sincere apologies for Carnival Horizon’s delayed return to Miami… Certainly, none of us expected your cruise to end later than scheduled.”

Carnival is now offering up to US$200 per person to cover independent, non-refundable air costs or change fees, with guests required to submit receipts.

The compensation offer arrived later than many expected, with some noting the delay added to frustration on disembarkation day.

Itinerary Changes Continue

Horizon sailed again that same evening but remains under speed restriction, resulting in further changes. The ship has already:

  • Cancelled its scheduled visit to Grand Cayman
  • Had a delayed arrival into Cozumel on 18th November
  • Maintained its call to Ocho Rios, Jamaica on 20th November

Guests were informed of the adjustments shortly after boarding and are receiving US$100 per stateroom in onboard credit.

Tracking data shows the ship cruising at 16–17 knots, several knots below her normal speed.

Engineers and shoreside technicians boarded in Miami, but full repairs may require parts or work that can only be completed dockside.

There is currently no confirmation on whether the following 8-night Southern Caribbean sailing, due to depart on 22nd November, will also be affected. Given the long distances to Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, further delays or itinerary changes remain possible.

Queen Mary 2: Propulsion Pod Fault Forces Diversion and Cancellations

While Carnival Horizon grapples with reduced speed in the Caribbean, sister brand Cunard is dealing with its own propulsion setback in Europe.

Queen-Mary-2

During a Northern Lights cruise, Queen Mary 2 suffered a technical defect in a propulsion pod, prompting an unplanned diversion to Bremerhaven, Germany, rather than continuing to Hamburg as scheduled.

Hamburg Call Abandoned

Calling at Hamburg requires the ship to navigate 50 miles up the River Elbe, including narrow channels and tight turns. With reduced manoeuvrability, the liner instead docked at a container terminal in Bremerhaven, which lacks traditional passenger facilities.

Around 420 guests who were due to end their cruise in Hamburg were transferred by coach, a two-hour journey.

Short Cruise Cancelled

To facilitate repairs, Cunard cancelled QM2’s 2-night Hamburg–Southampton sailing, originally scheduled for 17th November.

The ship did make it to Southampton on 19th November ahead of her transatlantic sailing – but there is no word yet on if the itinerary will be impacted at all.

Recurring Propulsion Troubles Across the Group

Both ships fall under the Carnival Corporation umbrella, and both have experienced propulsion issues in the past.

Queen Mary 2’s Mermaid pod system has long been criticised for reliability problems; Cunard successfully sued the manufacturer in 2009. Carnival Horizon, meanwhile, is part of the Vista class, which has previously encountered azipod-related challenges.

Azipods

Carnival Corporation has not indicated that the two current issues are related.

Carnival Horizon’s engineers are continuing attempts to restore full propulsion. With the lack of update from Cunard, it could be assumed that Queen Mary 2 has been repaired, although that could change.

Passengers booked on upcoming voyages for either vessel are advised to monitor email updates closely and maintain contact with their travel agents.

St Thomas Welcomes New Floating Taco Bar – And Cruise Visitors Are Set to Love It

One of the Caribbean’s most famous floating food spots is making a splash in a new location, just in time for peak cruise season.

Lime Out, the award-winning floating taco bar that put St John on the global culinary map, is opening a second outpost in Lindbergh Bay, St Thomas – a move set to delight both locals and the many cruise guests who flock to the island each year.

Bigger, Greener and Perfectly Placed for Cruise Day-Trippers

The new Lime Out spans 850 square feet, making it over a quarter larger than the original St John site, and it runs fully on solar power.

Most importantly for visiting cruisers, it’s positioned just a short ride from both Havensight and Crown Bay, the island’s two major cruise piers.

Travellers arriving on one of St Thomas’ busy port days can hop aboard a water shuttle such as Taco Taxi, making it easy to float out for lunch, cocktails and a swim before returning to the ship.

“Lime Out St Thomas is a culmination of what we believe to be some of the most beautiful attributes of the Virgin Islands – the sea, contagious energy, vibrant food and welcoming hospitality,”

Co-Founder Chelsea Baranowski

Tacos, Cocktails and a New St Thomas Twist

Led by celebrated Puerto Rican chef Amaro Rivera, the menu combines Lime Out favourites – like Surf & Turf and Rum-Rib Pulled Pork tacos – with new St Thomas exclusives.

That includes the Bless Up taco, layered with jerk-spiced grilled chicken, pickled cabbage and a pineapple and mango-lime relish.

Signature cocktails including The Danger and Nene’s Margarita return, all served in reusable cups to support the brand’s eco-friendly ethos.

“We’re bringing the heart of Lime Out St John’s menu to St Thomas but infusing it with local ingredients and island-specific flavours,”

Chef Amaro Rivera

Sustainable by Design – A Boost for Responsible Tourism

All food preparation takes place on land to protect the surrounding waters, and biodegradable materials are used throughout.

Lime Out St Thomas also plans to partner with local non-profits, organise coastal clean-ups and work alongside island farmers and fishers.

For cruise visitors, that means enjoying a fun, postcard-perfect outing without adding strain to the environment – a welcome trend as more travellers prioritise sustainable tourism.

A New Reason to Visit St Thomas

Lime Out opens to the public on 23rd November 2025, initially operating Sunday to Friday, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, with plans to expand to daily service in January.

With St Thomas already one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean, the new location is poised to become a standout day-trip option, offering guests a chance to sip, swim and snack in true Virgin Islands style before heading back to their ship.
