So you got a great deal on that Caribbean cruise. Scouring the Internet, checking with a travel agent or booking directly with the cruise line, you saved a pile of money on the cruise fare.
Cruise Travel Hacks
Happy that price includes port charges, taxes and fees, you can now board the ship. Doing anything onboard? That’s another story. That will cost you but not have to break the bank.
Booze! – No Smuggling Needed
Most cruise lines allow guests to bring aboard a bottle of wine to celebrate a special occasion. While replacing that cheap grocery store wine with vodka probably won’t work (but it might be worth a try), there are real vintages that are ‘better’ than others.
If ‘better’ means maximizing the effects of alcohol on your human body, skip the grocery store and go to a wine store.
Ask for wine with a higher alcoholic content to use in wine cocktails. There will be plenty of choices. The standard 750ml wine bottle holds about 19 shots of liquid. Do the math.
Better Service With Cash In Hand
Most big ship cruise lines automatically add the suggested amount of gratuities on a daily basis. At the end of the cruise, those are supposedly divided up among the crew members. That’s fine, allow that if you want to or feel the need, but be aware of the flexibility possible with this system.
Because this is still called a gratuity, you can still have them removed, choosing instead to tip the crew as you feel necessary. Start that process on day one, tipping as you go to room stewards, bartenders and waiters. Money still talks.
Play Their Game Or Get Off The Ship
Three Cruise Travel Hacks That Still Work 6
Those new to travel by cruise ship really have nothing to compare to. It’s the old timers who have sailed for ten or more years that fondly remember the olden days when more was included in the price. A better mindset: it is what it is.
If a more inclusive experience is what you want, there are a number of cruise lines doing that. Some offer inclusive pricing that often totals up to not all that much more than your inexpensive nothing-is-included cruise fare + what you paid onboard.
While it is indeed possible to walk on a big ship cruise and not spend one cent more on the experience, most travelers do. Actually, an increasing number of cruise travelers spend as much or more onboard than they paid for the ticket to board. What used to be called “nickle and diming” us to death is just business as usual these days.

Carnival Cruise Line debuted new ads for the “Find Your Fun Again” campaign starring Emmy-winning actor, author, and humorist Nick Offerman. The campaign is the first under the cruise line’s new brand platform, “Carnival Is Calling,” which launched on Nov. 1. Offerman serves as the face of the campaign – or more specifically, the gruff craftsman who found his grin.
“Find Your Fun Again” leverages Offerman’s sense of humor to tackle a perceived fun deficit currently in America. Raised in a family of cruisers and Carnival fans and known for his serious face and hidden sense of mischief, Offerman skillfully balances deadpan humor and playfulness. The ads were co-written with Offerman’s team of Parks and Recreation writers to make it unmistakably him.

“We believe Nick Offerman is the best person to be our ‘unlikely hero of fun.’ His signature blend of wry humor and credibility is the perfect way to deliver our message,” said Amy Martin Ziegenfuss, chief marketing officer of Carnival Cruise Line. “Nick’s personal mission, which aims to get kids off their screens and start creating projects, aligns with our vision of encouraging people to get out, reconnect, and find their fun again, with Carnival.”
Find Your Fun Again
Offerman joins a long line of Carnival celebrity spokespeople and brand ambassadors, including Shaquille O’Neal, Guy Fieri, Emeril Lagasse, Jonathan Bennett, and of course, Kathie Lee Gifford, who launched Carnival and cruising into a mass market consumer brand and lifestyle.

A cruise passenger received an unscheduled swim on Sunday, 16th November 2025, after slipping from the pier beside Norwegian Encore during the ship’s unexpected call to Nassau.
Norwegian Encore had originally been due to spend the day at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island.
Rough seas made tendering unsafe, forcing the 4,000-guest ship to divert to the Bahamian capital instead.
While guests were returning to the vessel that afternoon, a man lost his footing and fell into the water between the pier and the ship – a narrow but hazardous gap occupied by floating rubber fenders.
Videos shared on social media show the man clinging to a life ring as onlookers shouted for assistance. Within moments, crew members arrived with a ladder and pulled him from the water.
There are no reports of injury, and it remains unclear whether the man was a guest, crew member, or port worker.
Witnesses told local media they believed he either slipped from the dock or missed his step while approaching the gangway.
Why Falls From Piers Happen More Easily Than You Think
Although piers may appear safe, the space between a dock and a cruise ship can be surprisingly dangerous.
Cruise ships never sit flush against the pier, as direct contact would damage both the hull and the dock. Instead, large rubber bumpers float between the two structures.
Gaps between these bumpers can be several feet wide – more than enough space for an adult to slip through.
Gangways have railings, but the very start or end of the ramp is typically positioned above these gaps.
A brief lapse in attention, such as checking a mobile phone or misjudging a step, can be all it takes.
The good news is that the same rubber bumpers that protect the ship also create a buffer, reducing the risk of being crushed, provided the person stays afloat and calm. The greater danger is for anyone who cannot swim or panics, as they may drift beneath the pier or hull.
Other Recent Pier Incidents
Falls from cruise docks are rare but not unheard of:
August 2025: A guest on the preview sailing of Star of the Seas walked backwards while filming the ship and stepped straight off the pier.
June 2025: A person in Juneau, Alaska deliberately jumped from the dock – apparently attempting to film a viral stunt.
Slippery surfaces, uneven wooden planks, high winds, and simple distraction are the most common causes of pier mishaps.
A Reminder For Cruise Travellers
While this latest incident ended without injury, it serves as a reminder for guests to take extra care when walking along piers, avoid distractions near the water’s edge, and use gangways cautiously.

Princess Cruises will have a ship float at The Rose Parade on January 1, 2026 that will be a floral replica of their newest ship, Star Princess.
The next world-famous Rose Parade will take place in Pasadena, California on January 1, 2026. Since Princess Cruises has been named as the #1 cruise line to Alaska, their float will capture the awe and beauty of the 49th state.
The float will showcase towering glaciers shimmering in icy blues, soaring bald eagles, spouting humpback whales, and bears salmon fishing – all crafted from thousands of fresh flowers, seeds, bark and natural elements.
The design reflects the breathtaking landscapes, rich cultures and unforgettable wildlife encounters that define a Princess Alaska cruise.
The float will also showcase Princess second Sphere-Class ship, 177,800 gross ton, 4,300-guest Star Princess.
The cruise ship has standout venues including The Dome, a next-generation relaxation and entertainment space atop the ship; and sphere-shaped Piazza, the architectural centerpiece of the ship with its dramatic curves, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sweeping ocean vistas.
Marie Lee, Princess Cruises Chief Marketing Officer, gave the following statement about the float in The Rose Parade:
“We’re thrilled to welcome the new year by sharing the wonder of Alaska with millions of people watching the Rose Parade. Our spectacular float celebrates Alaska’s natural, breath-taking beauty and honors Star Princess, our newest ship, your gateway to discovery and unforgettable moments at sea.”
Mark Leavens President, 2026 Pasadena Tournament of Roses, added:
“It is an honor to welcome Princess Cruises, Los Angeles’ Hometown cruise line back to the Tournament of Roses Parade. For more than a century the Rose Parade has celebrated community, creativity, and the enduring spirit of hope that brings people together. Princess Cruises embodies that same spirit by inspiring travel and connecting guests to the most memorable destinations. We’re delighted to have them join this cherished celebration that continues to captivate millions of viewers around the globe each New Year’s Day.”

Contrary to common myths about cruise ships and the industry as a whole, these floating resorts offer one of the cleanest and most thoroughly tested environments on the planet.
With 44 days still left in 2025, at least 24 cruise ships have scored a perfect 100, according to CDC health inspection reports. So far, at least 191 ships have had surprise inspections, with an average score of almost 96%.
The Ultimate Pop Quiz: How Ships Earn a Perfect 100
Earning a score of 100 from the CDC is no cake walk. These thorough health checks are conducted by the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) without any prior warning or heads up. This means that the crew must always be ready when their ship is pulling into a U.S. port.
It’s the ultimate “pop quiz” for crew members, and a perfect score shows a detailed, day-in, day-out commitment to cleanliness. I’ve seen some crew members stressed out over the possibility of an inspection and the kind of pressure it puts on them. It’s definitely not easy, but these workers are the real backbone of your seamless vacation.
Inspectors look through every area that could impact public health. They’re not just glancing around. They’re looking for perfection in everything from:
Food Safety: Ensuring proper temperature control, preparation, and storage in the galleys (kitchens), and that all equipment is clean.
Water Systems: Monitoring the entire water system, from sourcing to purification, to guarantee it’s safe for everyone onboard.
Immaculate Public Spaces: Checking that pools, spas, medical facilities, children’s areas, and cabins are disinfected and maintained to the highest standards.
Even a minor slip-up, like a cleaning log missing a signature or a fridge being a degree off, can cost points. So, when a ship scores a perfect 100, it’s a huge testament to the crew’s dedication.
A score of 86 or higher is considered “satisfactory,” which truly puts the 24 perfect scores into perspective. Only one ship failed to score an 86 or higher: Villa Vie Odyssey which was tested in July of this year and scored an 81.
Top Performers of 2025
While the entire cruise industry deserves credit for its impressive 96% average score, some cruise lines have multiple scores of 100.
Royal Caribbean is leading the charge, with 5 inspections that have resulted in a perfect 100 this year. Disney Cruise Line and Viking both received 3 perfect 100 scores as well.
Other cruise lines with more than one perfect CDC score in 2025 include Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Oceania Cruises.

Bottom Line
The next time you read a headline about a cruise ship being a floating petri dish or an article trying to convince the public that norovirus is more common on a cruise ship than on land (which is patently false), remember the kind of dedication that goes into keeping these vessels clean and safe.
There’s a reason cruise lines want you to wash your hands before you enter the buffet area. And while some will make an annoying habit out of how they remind you to wash your hands, just know they are working just as hard behind the scenes to have an even higher standard of cleanliness.
