A cruise ship passenger from Indiana has died after a car struck several pedestrians and plunged into Ketchikan Creek in Alaska. ย The crash occurred on a busy tourist day in the cityโs downtown area.
Visiting the historic Creek Street in Ketchikan, Alaska
Tragedy and Heroism
Around 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, a vehicle accelerated from a parking space in the Centennial Parking Lot. ย It struck a 57-year-old woman from Auburn, Indiana, before crashing through a fence and coming to a stop in Ketchikan Creek.
The woman and her husband were cruise passengers visiting the popular Alaskan port.
The crash happened at a high-traffic area, with more than 15,000 cruise ship passengers in town that day.

The ships in port on Thursday included Norwegian Bliss, ms Eurodam, Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, and ms Koningsdam.
According to news reports, while officials and first responders quickly arrived, a local resident, Dylan Self, became a hero even in the middle of the chaos.ย
Seeing the car submerged and filling with water, Self jumped in and used a rock to break the driverโs window. He managed to pull the driver out and began performing CPR.ย Video footage shows Self jumping into the water to rescue the driver.
Self was later treated for a deep cut on his arm. A second cruise passenger also jumped in to help with the rescue.
Investigation Underway
The woman from Indiana was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.ย ย She was a pedestrian on the sidewalk at the time of the crash. Two others, including the driver and another bystander, were also hospitalized with injuries. The driver is in critical condition.
By the afternoon, crews had removed the vehicle from the creek.ย The area around the damaged Creek Street boardwalk remains closed to the public as officials work to ensure it is safe.
Authorities are still investigating what caused the car to suddenly accelerate.

On the morning of 5th September, the cruise ship MV Gemini, operated by Miray Cruises, struck the pier while attempting to dock at the port of Piraeus, Greece.
Preliminary checks suggest the vessel sustained damage to its hull above the waterline.
A crew member, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the ship made contact with the pier during the manoeuvre, leaving a sizeable hole in the side of the hull.
โMV Gemini, while docking in Piraeus, accidentally hit the dock, causing a big hole in its hull. Apparently, the problems are getting worse for this old lady,โ the source told CrewCenter.
Port authorities, together with the shipโs technical team, are now evaluating the extent of the damage. Repairs will need to be carried out before the vessel is permitted to return to service.
This latest incident adds to a growing list of setbacks for the 1992-built cruise ship.
Back in March, MV Gemini suffered an engine room fire shortly after leaving Piraeus. Smoke was visible on the upper decks, and passengers, along with crew members, were directed to muster stations as a precaution.
Although the blaze was extinguished, the ship was forced to limp back to port at reduced speed due to ongoing engine issues.
Following the collision at Piraeus, it is expected that both the Greek port authorities and the vesselโs classification society will require a full inspection before the ship can sail again.
Collisionsย ofย Thisย Natureย Areย Rare
Incidents where large cruise ships strike piers or other vessels are rare, though not unheard of.
In July 2023, Princess Cruisesโ Ruby Princess collided with Pier 27 in San Francisco while docking at the end of a 10-night Alaskan cruise.
Both the pier and the ship suffered damage above the waterline, but thankfully no injuries were reported. Passengers recalled a heavy jolt at the time of impact.
Around 16 months after the incident, a report was published that declared the likely cause was the โmaster not carrying out the approach to the dock as planned to account for the anticipated current.โ
The previous year, in May 2022, Royal Caribbeanโs Harmony of the Seas made contact with a dock extension in Jamaica, again causing only material damage.
Not all incidents involve piers.
On 11 December 2024, Royal Caribbeanโs Allure of the Seas was berthed in Nassau, Bahamas, when a yacht reportedly lost power and drifted into the shipโs stern. Witnesses shared videos online showing the smaller vesselโs mast breaking on impact.
The cruise ship itself escaped largely unscathed, and passengers reported only a short delay to departure. Maritime officials classify such an event as an allision (a moving vessel striking a stationary object) rather than a collision between two moving ships.
Other examples include:
In 2022, Royal Caribbeanโs Mariner of the Seas was hit by a cargo ship while docked in Freeport, Bahamas.
In December 2019, Carnivalโs Glory and Legend collided in Cozumel, Mexico, while both were moored. Carnival Glory sustained significant stern damage, narrowly missing Royal Caribbeanโs Oasis of the Seas.
While these accidents attract considerable attention, the reality is that modern cruise ships complete thousands of port calls each year without incident.
When allisions or collisions do occur, they are typically the result of difficult manoeuvres in busy harbours, adverse weather, or smaller craft losing control nearby.

Princess Cruises has announced a new appearance policy that will require all crew members to cover visible tattoos while on duty, starting 10th September 2025.
The change applies to roughly 30,000 staff across the lineโs 17 ships and marks a significant shift from previous guidelines, which allowed visible tattoos provided they were not offensive or inappropriate.
According to the updated rules, tattoos on arms and legs may be covered with neutral or skin-tone sleeves, while makeup or bandages may be used for smaller areas.
The company has said the move is intended to create a more polished, consistent look across the fleet and support a โrespectful and inclusive environmentโ for its wide-ranging guest base.
Supervisors and managers will be tasked with monitoring compliance, though Princess has not yet confirmed what disciplinary action might be taken for violations.
Crew members with concerns have been advised to contact Human Resources.
A Shift in Policy
Until now, Princess Cruises permitted tattoos that were considered โreasonable self-expressionโ, with restrictions only on neck and face tattoos or those featuring profanity, nudity or political and cultural references.
Smaller tattoos could be covered with makeup or bandages, but large wraps were discouraged.
The cruise line states that the stricter approach brings Princess more in line with Carnival Corporation, its parent company since 2003.
Ironically, Carnival Cruise Line reaffirmed just last year that its own crew members are still allowed to display tattoos onboard, highlighting a difference in corporate style.
Facial piercings remain banned for Princess crew, while jewellery is limited to discreet pieces that do not detract from the uniform.
The company maintains that all dress code rules are designed to ensure a polished image, with clean, pressed uniforms and visible name tags.
Exceptions may be made where tattoos hold religious or cultural significance, which will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by Princess Cruisesโ Shoreside Head of Entertainment.
Opposite Move to NCL
The move is in direct contrast to one made by rival Norwegian Cruise Line in 2023, which previously had tougher rules on tattoos, facial hair and jewellery for crew members.
But in July of that year, the cruise line announced that rules were being relaxed and that visible tattoos were accepted, provided they werenโt on the face, head or the front of the neck (and, of course, that they werenโt offensive).
Those rules also saw crew members permitted to wear more jewellery, as long as it didnโt interfere with their duties, and strict rules on facial hair were also relaxed to allow crew members to have a moustache, beard or goatee, provided they were well maintained.
Of course, those changes are now a couple of years old -perhaps NCL will reverse them if thatโs the direction the cruise industry is going in.

Carnival Cruise Line has sent a letter to impacted passengers of Carnival Firenze, letting them know that their travel plans will have a slight change due to Hurricane Lorena.ย Although the storm has weakened, itโs still expected to bring a large amount of rainfall to the West Coast.
The ship, which sailed from Long Beach on Thursday, September 4, is now visiting its ports in Mexico in a different order.
The companyโs โFleet Operations Centerโ is closely watching the storm in the Eastern Pacific. To stay a safe distance from bad weather and offer a better experience for passengers, Carnival decided to flip the itinerary.
A letter shared with guests onboard, and later posted on social media, detailed the change:
โOur Fleet Operations Center is actively monitoring Hurricane Lorena that has developed in the Eastern Pacific. Based on current forecasts, and to remain a safe distance from storm conditions and offer a better experience ashore, it is necessary to revise our itinerary plans, as outlined below:โ
Whatโs Changing?
The five-night cruise was originally set to visit Cabo San Lucas first, followed by Ensenada. The new plan will have the ship visit these ports in reverse:
Ensenada: The ship will now arrive on Friday, September 5, instead of Monday, September 8.
Cabo San Lucas: This stop, originally scheduled for Friday, will now happen on Sunday, September 7.
The rest of the trip, including two days at sea and the planned return to Long Beach, will continue as scheduled.
Safety First
The letter from Carnival also emphasized that safety is the top priority:
โWe apologize for this weather-related change and trust you understand this decision was made with everyoneโs safety in mind.โ
The company has also assured guests that any shore excursions they pre-purchased will be adjusted to the new schedule.
While weather-related changes can be disappointing, they are a standard safety practice for cruise lines, which prioritize avoiding rough seas and storm conditions.
About the Ship
The Carnival Firenze is a 2021-built ship that can carry 4,208 passengers at double capacity. It sails from Long Beach year-round, offering four- to six-night cruises to Baja California and the Mexican Riviera.
The ship is also set for some big changes in the future. Starting in the winter of 2026-27, it will offer new itineraries, including special cruises through South America before being repositioned to the U.S. East Coast.
It is even scheduled to arrive in New York City in May to begin summer cruises from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.
About the Storm
At the time of the itinerary change, Hurricane Lorena had been downgraded to a tropical storm but was still a significant weather event in the Eastern Pacific.
The stormโs path was expected to remain offshore just west of Mexicoโs Baja California peninsula, but forecasters warned of a continued threat of life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides for parts of the region.ย

Personally, the very thought of getting up at 5:00 in the morning while on a cruise ship feels like treason to my body and soul.ย It would take quite the cup of coffee to even get me to force my eyelids open.
But for one early riser, military life had programmed them to get up early, even when on vacation at sea.ย And at just 5 hours after the stroke of midnight, they found a cruise ship with little to do and not enough to eat, or so the post on Reddit explained.
The post on r/CarnivalCruiseFans from a self-described military cruiser sparked an outpouring of support and advice, revealing a community of fellow early-risersโwho knew!
The original poster, cruising on Carnival Paradise, took to the social media site to explain their situation. โIโm bored and starving,โ they wrote. โThere is literally nothing to eat or do here right now. The continental breakfast doesnโt open till 0630.โ
They added that even the casino was closed, and no hours were posted, a frustration they shared so their โfellow early risers can prepare better than I did!โ
In response, people turned the simple complaint into a helpful guide for early risers on a cruise.
A Communityโs Response
Instead of telling the passenger to โjust wait,โ the other early-risers rallied around the shared experience of being up before the rest of the ship.
One user described a similar scenario on an Alaskan cruise: โI would get up about 5:30 and go to the buffet for coffee. There were several people up there playing cards. On the second day, I was invited to join and everyday thereafter I played cards and drank coffee with other early risers from around the ship.โ
Others offered practical solutions to the food dilemma. The most common advice was to get creative with leftovers.
As one user put it, they โbring ziplock bags to the buffet and take cookies and pastries back to the stateroom to snack on.โ Another suggested a simple strategy: โRation pastries from today for tomorrow.โ
For those who plan ahead, many noted that โroom service is available 24/7 if youโre really hungry,โ a fact that seemed to be a surprise to some.ย But keep in mind that this is an extra charge and the complimentary continental breakfast menu is only available from 6-10am.
A Different Kind of Cruise Experience
For some cruisers in the thread, those early hours offer something you just canโt get at any other time on the cruise ship: some peace and quiet.
One user captured this sentiment perfectly, writing, โI like that time of morning best, itโs like I have the place to myself.โ They use the time to get in their steps while enjoying some morning coffee.
Others mentioned their favorite pre-dawn activities, from going โduck huntingโ around the ship to finding a quiet place to watch the sunrise.
โSlots are open if youโre not in port, gym is open, running track is always open,โ another cruiser noted. โIโve spent a lot of early morning hours in the arcade.โ
โI get a quick workoutโฆ, drink some coffee, big breakfast, wake up my wife โฆ, watch her eat breakfast,โ another cruiser joked.
Bottom Line
As I often say, everyone has their own unique style of cruising.ย While some love to get up early and enjoy the solitude and serenity of a quiet ship, others canโt even imagine being up at the hour.
As one user put it, โI just said to my husband, the only way I see five am is if weโre still up.โ
Thereโs a reason that 9 to 10am timeslot is so busy at the breakfast buffet.ย But if you can grab breakfast a couple hours earlier, you can at least avoid the crowds.
Princess Cruises is making a change to the cash back that cruisers receive when they make a payment in port using their Ocean Medallion.
Princess Cruises is the only cruise line that allows guests to use their Medallion (they donโt use cruise cards) while in port at select shops and restaurants. You can read about our experience doing that here.
Up until now, Princess cruisers received a 7% credit rebate to their onboard account when they used their Medallion in port.
Stores in port that take the Princess Medallion have this sign up,
Starting on October 16, 2025, Princess Cruises is lowering the cash back given to guests from 7% to 2%.
The cruise line said that even though they are lowering the rate, the Medallion remains the most convenient method for shopping while in port.
Princess Cruises also said that they are expanding the program to include additional stores which will give guests more options to earn cash back to their onboard accounts.

Carnival Cruise Line has expanded its drinks offering with the launch of a brand-new package tailored for guests who prefer not to drink alcohol.
The CHEERS! Zero Proof package provides a wider range of non-alcoholic choices than the existing soda plan and is designed as a more affordable alternative to the lineโs all-inclusive alcoholic package.
The package is designed as a mid-range alternative between the Bottomless Bubbles soda package and the all-inclusive alcoholic CHEERS! programme.
It will be available on all Carnival ships from 15th September 2025 onwards.
Christine Duffy, Carnivalโs president, explained that the package was created in direct response to guest demand for a more comprehensive non-alcoholic option.
What the Package Includes
The Zero Proof package is priced at $29.99 (USD) per person, per day if booked before sailing, or $34.99 onboard, with an automatic 18% gratuity added.
So the actual price you should expect to pay is $35.39 per day if bought pre-cruise, and $41.29 if bought onboard.
Prices for Australian cruises are $39.99 (AUD) pre-cruise or $44.99 onboard.
Included in the package are:
Soft drinks (now Coca-Cola products)
Juices
Still and sparkling bottled water
Coconut water
Premium coffees and teas
Mocktails (zero-proof cocktails)
Alcohol-free beer
Alcohol-free sparkling wine
Frozen non-alcoholic drinks
Smoothies and milkshakes
Bottled protein shakes
Energy drinks
Exclusions include drinks sold in souvenir glasses, beverages at the gangway, room service items, mini-bars, and drinks served at private events.
One unusual restriction is that guests must still be 21 or older to order zero-proof cocktails, alcohol-free beer, and alcohol-free sparkling wine, despite these drinks containing no alcohol.
Rules and Restrictions
Unlike the full CHEERS! alcoholic package, not every guest in a stateroom has to purchase Zero Proof.
It is available as an individual choice, making it more flexible for families or groups with different preferences.
As with all Carnival packages, drinks cannot be shared between passengers. The package also does not extend to ports of call, including private destinations such as Celebration Key.
Itโs important to note that the flexibility doesnโt extend to any cruisers also buying an alcohol-inclusive package for someone in their cabin.
If someone wants the full CHEERS! package that includes alcohol, then everyone in the cabin must purchase the same one. You canโt have someone on CHEERS! and someone on Zero-Proof CHEERS!
A Long-Requested Option
Carnivalโs brand ambassador, John Heald, highlighted how often he is asked about an upgraded non-alcoholic package, calling this new option a direct response to guest requests.
The package is unlimited, with no cap on the number of drinks that can be ordered each day.
It also complements rather than replaces the long-standing Bottomless Bubbles soda plan, giving passengers more choice depending on their drinking habits.
Guests are being encouraged to book quickly, as Carnival has already suggested that prices may increase in the future if the package proves highly popular.
