Cruise Guests Hit By Bus In Livorno: One Dead, One Critical

Reports in Italian media suggest that a tragic accident at the port of Livorno, Italy, has claimed the life of an American tourist and left her husband critically injured.

The incident happened on 12th August, shortly after the couple returned from a city excursion and disembarked their shuttle bus.

According to initial reports, the 83-year-old woman and her 84-year-old husband were struck by a bus manoeuvring in the port area. It is unclear whether it was the same bus they had just stepped from.

One unconfirmed report named the victims as Ellen Jan and Samuel Davis.

The woman was rushed to hospital but sadly died shortly after arrival. Her husband remains in critical condition and has been admitted under code red.

Guests Were Onboard Queen Victoria

While the cruise line has not released an official statement, one guest onboard Queen Victoria contacted me to report the incident, and to confirm it was two guests from that ship that were the victims.

The guest, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that the captain had announced the tragic news to passengers onboard.

Queen Victoria

Early investigations suggest the accident occurred as the bus reversed and the couple entered the driver’s blind spot.

Witnesses say the driver had only just assisted the woman off the bus and handed her a walker before moving to continue his service.

Police immediately cordoned off the area to conduct investigations and interview witnesses.

The driver, described as highly experienced, was visibly shaken, telling officers he realised something was wrong only when he heard shouts and a noise from behind the vehicle.

The accident has caused deep shock at the busy Tuscan port, which regularly handles cruise traffic. Authorities are now working to reconstruct exactly how the tragedy occurred.

Bus Accidents Are Rare, But Do Happen

While such incidents are rare, this is not the first time cruise passengers have been involved in serious bus accidents.

In June 2025, a sightseeing bus in Ketchikan, Alaska, carrying 46 cruise guests collided with an SUV, sending the bus into a roadside ditch. Three people were hospitalised, though thankfully no lives were lost.

Just a year earlier in September 2024, another Alaska excursion turned dangerous when a tour bus overturned on the South Klondike Highway near Skagway after the driver suffered a medical emergency. That accident left 12 passengers injured.

Elsewhere, in March 2025, a tour bus in Barcelona carrying cruise tourists was struck by another vehicle transporting Italian students. The collision, which happened close to the Sagrada Familia, left 53 people injured, including several in critical condition.

Despite these rare but high-profile incidents, the overwhelming majority of bus transfers and excursions connected to cruises are completed without incident, carrying thousands of guests safely each year.

The Nude Cruise Where Fares Cost Just £22!

More than 120 naturists shed their clothes for the 13th annual “Nude Cruise,” a three-hour trip along the River Exe estuary in Devon celebrating body freedom and naturism.

Organised by Bare West Events, the cruise has been a fixture since 2012, with passengers of all ages mingling, dancing, and enjoying the voyage without a stitch of clothing.

nude cruise

Organiser Rachel Wick, 50, told The Sun that the event was about breaking misconceptions.

“It’s really sad that a large percentage of the population equate being naked only with sex – it’s not,

“If somebody misbehaves, they will be on our banned list. Not that it’s ever happened, but we’re always mindful that this has to be a safe environment because you can feel quite vulnerable when you haven’t got your clothes on.”

She added that naturism breaks down social barriers: “One of the things I love about it is you can’t tell from looking at all of us whether we are rich or poor, working or retired. When you can’t judge people’s status, we’re all on a level.”

Her partner, Nigel, said businesses are always willing to host nude events, with venues happy to welcome the so-called “buff pound.”

He said: “The nudist world is a real mix of people, from prison officers to barristers and doctors. It is the sense of freedom and being relaxed in your own body that draws people in. It’s a very friendly environment.”

On board, guests enjoyed a disco, raffle, and bar, with some passengers using pouches to carry cash and phones.

The £22 ticket included a hot pasty, while passing pleasure boats cheered on the sight of the unclothed party.

For some attendees, however, participation in such events remains private.

Dee, from Plymouth, admitted: “My employer and child would be shocked if they knew I was doing this. For some reason, a lot of people associate what we do with swinging but it doesn’t mean that. It’s just people wanting to take their clothes off and enjoying the freedom, nothing else.”

Naturists Mark Carroll and Claire Stone said attitudes are slowly shifting.

Stone, on her first community naturist event, said: “I love it. I do a lot of naturist beaches but this is the first time I have done a community event. Times are changing – it’s becoming more popular but the younger generation are still quite prudish.”

Kevin Little, 61, who has practiced naturism since 1997, highlighted the benefits of living clothes-free.

“It’s quite addictive. I love being on a beach and just connecting with nature,” he said. “A lot of people tell me: ‘I wish I could do that’… Well, you can. But people are very body conscious, although nobody cares.”

His wife Tanis added that younger people are slowly becoming more involved, with their son encouraging friends to try naturist activities.

One of the few younger passengers, 39-year-old marketing professional Martin Niebroj, said: “I really like the social part of it. Technically it’s not illegal to be naked in public in Britain, but it always causes a lot of interest. I feel people who are naturists should be allowed to express themselves and should have a space to do it. Events like this allow that.”

While a YouGov poll suggests 59% of Britons feel uncomfortable with public nudity, naturists argue such events are helping to challenge stigma.

An Ipsos survey previously found that 14% of people in the UK identify as naturists or nudists.

After three hours of sailing, music, and mingling, the cruise returned to dock, with passengers reluctantly reaching for their clothes once more.

Ocean-Faring Nude Cruises

While Devon’s annual nude boat trip is a distinctly local affair, naturist cruising has also gone global, with major ocean itineraries dedicated to those who prefer life without clothes.

A Reddit discussion from a passenger on one of the world’s most popular nude cruises offered an insight into what these voyages are really like.

Unlike the nude boat trip, not everyone onboard a nudism ocean cruise is a paying guest; some operators invite professional models to join the sailing to help balance the demographics.

The majority of passengers tend to be older, typically between 50 and 70, though younger naturists are also part of the mix. Age differences, however, quickly become irrelevant once everyone is sharing the same sense of freedom.

A smiling couple embracing in a swimming pool, looking at each other with joy. The woman has blonde hair and the man has dark hair, both appearing happy and relaxed in the water.

The cruises are also popular with gay men, and while the atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, organisers are quick to stress that nudism is not sexual – just as with this smaller cruise.

Behaviour on board is expected to remain respectful at all times. Hygiene is a priority too, with towels provided throughout the ship and guests expected to sit on them whenever they use public seating.

Practical considerations also come into play. Shoes or sandals are required when moving around the decks for safety reasons, while sunscreen becomes essential given that every inch of skin is exposed to the sun. Clothing is generally optional in most parts of the ship, including bars and lounges, though formal restaurants do require guests to dress.

Excursions often extend the naturist experience, with nude beaches and resorts forming part of the itinerary.

Crew members, meanwhile, remain clothed, though staff are given the choice of whether to work on a nudist voyage. Perhaps most importantly, the cruises are open to everyone, regardless of body shape, size or age, with passengers consistently describing them as welcoming and relaxed.

For many naturists, these ocean-going holidays offer the same appeal as the River Exe cruise – a chance to unwind, meet like-minded people, and enjoy the freedom of life without clothes.

What Every Cruiser Needs to Know

After all the planning that goes into a once-in-a-lifetime trip, it can be the little things that derail all those hopes and dreams.  I hope this can be a wakeup call for those who might not have looked at their passports in a while.

A honeymoon for one newlywed couple was ruined before it even began, all because of a passport issue. While the couple was not going on a cruise, it’s a good reminder for anyone planning to set sail in the future.

TUI airline and passport

According to news reports, newlyweds Joe and Beccy Barnes had just gotten married and were ready for a romantic, all-inclusive getaway to a resort in Ayia Napa, Cyprus. They arrived at the airport with their bags packed and spirits high, only to be denied boarding for their flight.

The couple had booked a five-day, all-inclusive package with TUI, a massive global travel company. TUI operates its own airlines, hotels, and, most importantly for cruisers, at least 18 cruise ships across three brands.

TUI’s cruise brands, which include Marella Cruises in the UK, TUI Cruises in Germany (a joint venture with Royal Caribbean), and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises are well-known for their all-inclusive “fly-and-cruise” packages.

passport renewal

The Problem

After trying to check-in at East Midlands Airport in England, the couple was greeted with bad news. A TUI agent discovered what was described as a “very badly damaged” passport belonging to Joe.

The issue: a small 1cm rip on the upper right-hand corner of the photo page, along with what staff claimed was water damage and a taped-up cover.

Joe, a 35-year-old forklift driver couldn’t believe it. He had flown with a different airline, Jet2, on the same passport just three weeks prior with no issues.

“We got to the front check-in desk and the woman said you’ve got a slight rip in your passport page. I need to go talk to my manager,” Joe said. “She said ‘yeah there’s a rip in it‘”.

Despite explaining the situation and his recent wedding, Joe said that TUI wouldn’t budge, and in his words stated, “Do not let this man travel.”

“My wife was absolutely devastated”, Joe commented. “It was a horrible feeling. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to go through this.”

The couple spent two hours at the airport before heading home, losing their entire £1,200 (about $1,600 U.S. dollars).

old or damaged passports

Reminder for Cruisers

This story should remind every future cruiser to make sure these documents are in order and in good condition, especially if there are plans to fly internationally.  The same rules that TUI followed for this flight can apply just as much to your cruise.

  • Your Passport Is Checked Twice (or More): If you’re flying to your departure port, the airline will check your passport before you even get on the plane. Once you arrive, the cruise line will conduct its own inspection before allowing you to board the ship.
  • Port Authorities Have the Final Say: On an international cruise, you’ll be visiting multiple countries. Immigration officials in each port of call can inspect your passport. A damaged document could lead to you being denied entry into a country.
  • It’s Just Not Worth the Risk: What one agent sees a minor flaw, another can see as a major security issue. The cost of a replacement passport is cheap compared to the cost of a missed flight or cruise.

Joe and Beccy are now left to try and salvage what they can of their honeymoon. Joe’s warning to other travelers is a simple one:

“I would warn people to get their passport checked, even if there’s a slight mark on it.”

As far as some type of insurance covering the trip, Joe said, “It’s looking doubtful that insurance will cover it. It’s quite unlikely. We’re just going to try and book something later on.”

Two Carnival Cruise Passengers Drowned In Separate Incidents On The Same Day

On Friday, officials confirmed that two Carnival Cruise Line passengers met tragic drownings in separate events in the Bahamas.

Carnival’s statement detailed that one individual drowned in a lagoon while the other perished at the beach, both occurrences taking place at Celebration Key, a private getaway for Carnival patrons situated on the southern coast of Grand Bahama. This area features a water park, a beach club, lagoons, and dining establishments.

The deceased persons were a 74-year-old female and a 79-year-old male.

“One guest was traveling with family on Mardi Gras while the other was enjoying time with family on Carnival Elation,” Carnival expressed in their statement. “Our heartfelt condolences are extended to the guests and their families, and our Care Team is offering support.”

According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, law enforcement was alerted to the first incident just before noon. Officers discovered the 79-year-old male unresponsive aboard a commercial vessel.

“As per the initial report, the male lost consciousness while snorkeling at the beach,” police conveyed in a statement. “A lifeguard retrieved him from the water, and CPR was administered, but it proved ineffective.”

He was declared dead by a physician, according to police.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., authorities discovered the 74-year-old female unresponsive aboard another commercial vessel, as per the police report.

The woman had lost consciousness while swimming in a pool, and a lifeguard who aided her out of the water performed CPR, which unfortunately was also ineffective, leading to her pronouncement of death.

“An autopsy will be conducted on both individuals to ascertain the precise cause of death,” police remarked. “The inquiries are ongoing in both cases.”

Carnival and law enforcement chose not to disclose the identities of either of the individuals.

Two Guests Drown On Same Day At Celebration Key

Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed two tragic deaths at its newly opened Celebration Key in the Bahamas, after unrelated drowning incidents occurred on Friday, 15th August 2025.

Carnival Celebration Key

According to reports, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman – both American citizens – died despite the immediate intervention of lifeguards and medical personnel stationed at the private resort.

“Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate water emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday – one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away.”

Carnival statement

One of the victims had been snorkelling, while the other was enjoying one of the site’s lagoons, though it has not been confirmed whether this was the family-focused Starfish Lagoon or the adults-only Oasis Lagoon.

Multiple Ships Impacted

Carnival noted that the victims were sailing on different vessels.

“One guest was sailing with family on Mardi Gras and one guest was sailing with family on Carnival Elation. Our Care Team is providing assistance,” the statement read.

Carnival Elation is currently operating a four-night Bahamas itinerary, while Mardi Gras is completing a six-night Eastern Caribbean voyage.

Starfish Lagoon Beach Celebration Key

Both ships have since continued their scheduled cruises.

The double tragedy highlights the risks travellers can face even in controlled environments.

Drowning incidents are sadly not unprecedented on cruise holidays – with recent examples at MSC’s Ocean Cay in 2023 and at Mystery Island in Vanuatu the same year, both believed to involve possible medical complications.

Guests are advised to stay alert to their own limitations when swimming, use the buddy system, and be particularly careful in unfamiliar waters.

Carnival Cruise Line Changes Ship’s Itinerary Away from Hurricane Erin

Carnival Cruise Line has adjusted tomorrow’s sailing on Carnival Sunshine due to Hurricane Erin.

Hurricane Erin is the first major hurricane of the 2025 season. The storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 150 mph and is a Category 4 hurricane.

Carnival Sunshine was scheduled to depart from Norfolk, Virginia tomorrow on a six-night cruise to Bermuda.

The ship will no longer visit Bermuda and will now sail to The Bahamas and stop at the cruise line’s new port, Celebration Key, and Nassau.

A spokesman for Carnival Cruise Line sent the following message to Cruise Fever about the changed itinerary for Carnival Sunshine:

“The team at our Fleet Operations Center in Miami is working with the captains on our ships to monitor Hurricane Erin.

“Due to the storm’s forecasted path, Carnival Sunshine has canceled its Bermuda calls on August 20 and 21. The ship will instead visit Celebration Key on August 19 and Nassau on August 20 before returning to Norfolk as scheduled on August 23.

“Safety is our priority, and we will continue to track the storm, factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard and local port authorities to provide timely updates. Guests on upcoming sailings are encouraged to opt in to text alerts during check-in and monitor their email for potential updates from Carnival.”

This is the first change for Carnival due to Hurricane Erin. Royal Caribbean also canceled a visit to Bermuda on one of their ships and will it now visit other ports.

Star of the Seas Departs Port Canaveral on Maiden Voyage

Royal Caribbean’s newest cruise ship, Star of the Seas, departed on its maiden voyage today, a four-night cruise to The Bahamas from Port Canaveral.

A free “Party in the Park” was organized by the port to send off the world’s largest cruise ship in style.

The event was filled with family-friendly fun that included food trucks, a DJ, a bubble machine, themed giveaways and more.

“Star-Studded Sailabration” participants could also have their photo taken with a real-life DeLorean car inspired by Star of the Seas’ new “Back to the Future: The Musical,” and featured in the beloved 1985 film.

Escorted by Canaveral Fire Rescue’s Fireboat 2 and tugboats, Christine S from E.N. Bisso and the Patriot from Marine Towing of Port Canaveral, providing a traditional maritime water cannon salute, Star of the Seas was the new “starlet” in a parade of cruise ships departing Port Canaveral that afternoon, including Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras and Freedom, the Disney Treasure, and the Norwegian Aqua.

When the ship returns to Port Canaveral, it will be christened on August 20 during an invitation-only ceremony onboard the vessel.

After a handful of short preview cruises, Star of the Seas will begin sailing week-long cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Port Canaveral.

9 Reasons I Fell in Love with Holland America Line

I’m currently onboard Nieuw Statendam and, honestly, I’m smitten.

At this point, I’ve tried pretty much all of the major cruise lines. But for some reason, I’d omitted to try Holland America. What a mistake that was!

Cruise Mummy on Holland America Line ship

Holland America Line might not shout the loudest in the cruise world. And to be honest, I didn’t fully understand what made them unique. But once you’ve sailed with this underrated cruise line, you understand why loyal cruisers return again and again.

I was invited to spend a week onboard Nieuw Statendam as she sailed from Rotterdam to Reykjavic. As always, my opinions are my own and the cruise line has no control over my content.

This cruise has surpassed all my expectations, and then some. So, read on to discover why I fell for this elegant, quietly confident cruise line…

1. The proud Dutch heritage

Holland America Line has been sailing since 1873, when it was a shipping line between the Netherlands and America. Over the decades it evolved from carrying immigrants and cargo across the Atlantic to offering premium leisure cruises all over the world – while keeping its Dutch roots firmly at the heart of the brand.

Grand Dutch Cafe

One of my favourite spots onboard Nieuw Statendam is the Grand Dutch Café, where you can treat yourself to Dutch specailities like friet (chips with mayo and peanut sauce), Dutch poffertjes (pancakes), bitterballen (breaded meatballs) and stroopwafels (caramel biscuits).

The captain and many of the senior officers are Ducth and the announcements are made in English first, then Dutch. Everything else is English though so you really don’t need to be a Dutch speaker to enjoy a cruise with this line!

2. Friendly faces everywhere

Holland America Line’s crew are genuinely warm and attentive – the kind who remember your name and your favourite drink.

Even the passengers seem friendlier than on other cruise lines. While the nationality of the guests varies depending on the destinations, on this cruise there’s a mix of Americans and Dutch people, with a few Brits, Australians and other Europeans too.

I’ve found that most Dutch people speak perfect English and are happy to chat.

I heard that Holland America attracts an older clientele, but in my experience the other guests aren’t any older than cruise passengers tend to be. There’s a mix of all ages, with couples aged 50 to 70 making up the majority.

Nieuw Statendam in Iceland

3. Easy departures from the UK and Netherlands

Holland America Line offers cruises all over the world with a fleet of eleven ships. So whether you want a long and exotic adventure, or just a a week away, there’s something for you.

Because HAL’s ships are mid-sized, they can often reach ports that mega-ships can’t. That means charming fjord towns in Norway, smaller Mediterranean islands, and even rare British Isles stops.

Nieuw Statendam in Iceland

Many of the cruises depart from Amsterdam or Rotterdam. These are very easy to fly to from the UK, and both great places to spend a couple of days before or after your cruise.

Rotterdam is where HAL’s very first ships once departed back in the 19th century, carrying passengers to New York.

But, if you live in the UK, you can skip the airport queues entirely and hop on a cruise from Dover – Nieuw Statendam is offering roundtrips from there in 2025 and 2026.

4. Perfect for solo travellers

Holland America Line offers solo cabins on the three Pinnacle ships, so you’re not paying for space you don’t need.

They also host solo traveller meetups early in the cruise, making it easy to meet people if you’d like to socialise. I attended one of these on my cruise and met some wonderful people of all ages and from all walks of life. We even had dinner together afterwards.

Cruise Mummy solo travel

5. Surprisingly good for families

Holland America Line might have a reputation for attracting an older crowd, but don’t let that fool you – they do family cruising really well.

The Club HAL kids’ programme and the teen space offer plenty to keep younger cruisers happy, with games, movies and social events.

HAL teen club - High Score

In the evenings, the High Score! teen area open up to everyone, so the whole family can battle it out over air hockey or arcade games. This space is incredible, with lots of video games, pinball machines, air hocky, a giant table football station and so much more.

I love that younger kids are welcome too and my eight and ten year old would absolutely love being allowed to use this space, with or without their parents!

Just how good Holland America is for kids seems to be something of a secret – and honestly, I’m a little nervous to tell you as I don’t want everyone to know!

I cruised in the school holidays in August and saw barely any children onboard at all. If you’ve ever taken a cruise that’s marketed towards families in August – you’ll really appreciate the contrast here.

Nieuw Statendam pool

Unlike most cruise ships, Holland America Line’s newest Pinnacle-class ships (that’s Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam) all have dedicated family rooms that sleep five people with two bathrooms!

It’s so refreshing is that you won’t find hordes of kids on board in peak school holidays. Without the giant waterslides and cartoon mascots that draw big crowds elsewhere, the vibe stays calm – pools are peaceful, corridors are quiet, and there’s space to breathe.

For parents, that means a holiday that’s as relaxing for you as it is exciting for the kids. And if you’re a teacher wanting to escape other people’s children for a while – this cruise line is a great choice!

Keep your eye out for the occasional ‘Kids Cruise Free’ offers, but know that he kids prices are always pretty good.

I priced up a two-week cruise for my family in August 2027, and the kids’ prices came in at less than 20% of the adult fares, which is fantastic!

6. Food that hits the spot

Dining is where Holland America really shines. The main dining room on Nieuw Statendam is one of the most beautiful restaurants I’ve ever seen. The sweeping staircase, curved balconies and warm golden lighting is just stunning.

Nieuw Statendam main dining room

I also love the Lido Market buffet which has so much choice. Everything is clearly labelled and tastes delicious. There are plenty of crew members on hand to top up your coffee or bring some orange juice to your table for you.

There are more casual options too, like the poolside cafe Dive-In, which serves gourmet burgers, hot dogs and loaded fries (vegan and gluten-free options included too), and the New York Deli & Pizza bar which is open from breakfast until bed time.

hot dog and fries

Speciality dining is exceptional – from steak and seafood at Pinnacle Grill to Asian fusion at Tamarind, French-inspired plates at Rudi’s Sel de Mer, and homely Italian at Canaletto.

And then there’s 24-hour room service, which is still free, because HAL refuses to let classic cruise perks vanish.

7. Live music every night

Music isn’t just background noise on Holland America – it’s a major part of the onboard experience.

Onboard Nieuw Statendam, The Music Walk on deck 2 offers four distinct venues:

  • B.B. King’s Blues Club for soulful, high-energy sets
  • Billboard Onboard for duelling pianos and crowd singalongs
  • Rolling Stone Lounge for classic hits performed live
  • Ocean Bar for soloists in a cosy atmosphere
BB KIngs

Whether you’re sipping a nightcap or dancing in your seat, the atmosphere is infectious and the variety of performers is incredible – they’re all super talented.

Nieuw Statendam’s décor is inspired by the “architecture of music” – there’s musical-inspired artwork everywhere you turn. Taking the stairs has never been so much fun with the incredible pieces to admire on each floor!

Nieuw Statendam artwork

8. The World Stage

On the Pinnacle-class ships, the World Stage wraps the audience in a 270-degree LED screen. It’s immersive, it’s high-tech, and it makes every performance feel amazing.

World State on Nieuw Statendam

When you’re listening to a leacture, you’re also watching, as the huge screens give so much information. And for live performances such as dancers, acrobats and magicians, you feel as though you’re right there with them, as the stage is in the centre and at a relatively low level.

9. The “Have It All” package is actually good value

Cruise packages can be hit or miss, but HAL’s Have It All deal is genuinely worth a look.

For $60 per person, per day, you get:

  • Signature Beverage Package – Covering a wide range of drinks
  • Shore Excursion Credit – $100 on up to 9 days, $200 on 10-20 days and $300 on 21+ days
  • Speciality Dining – 1 meal up to 9 days, 2 meals 10-20 days and 3 meals on 21+ days
  • Surf Wi-Fi Package

Given that the drink package costs $51 per day anyway, if you’re thinking of getting that then the Have It All deal is totally worth it. Book it before you cruise though, as once onbaord it costs $70 per day rather than $60.

Look out for other deals that you can combine with this too, like free prepaid crew appreciation, free kids fares and low deposits.
