Guests Raise Concerns Over Beach Erosion At Disney’s Newest Private Island

Disney Cruise Line guests are raising concerns over worsening beach erosion at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, with some warning that the conditions outside certain premium cabanas may now pose a safety risk.

Lookout Cay officially opened in summer 2024 as Disney’s second private island destination.

While the Bahamian retreat offers a stunning mix of relaxation and entertainment, several guests visiting in July 2025 noted that erosion along the shoreline near the Mabrika Cove Cabanas has created a hazardous drop-off just beyond their rental’s back stairs.

“You could see the beach wash away while swimming in front of it… There was no way we could have stayed and swam there safely.”

A guest who rented Cabana 21

While Disney Cruise Line had roped off some staircases due to the changing conditions, the guest shared photos and video showing a steep drop from their cabana deck down to uneven, jagged rocks – not the soft sand typically expected.

“When we got to the deck, we were shocked to see all the huge rocks in front,” they explained. “They were not smooth, and they varied greatly in depth, so you had to walk very carefully and slowly or you would end up accidentally falling into a hole or crack.”

The situation reportedly worsened when guests attempted to swim.

“The waves and current were so strong that we kept getting pushed back into the rocks,” they added. “The adults could barely stop themselves, and the kids were straight up being thrown into the rocks.”

Conditions Seem to Be Deteriorating Rapidly

While it has been known that the cabanas closest to the end of the Mabrika Cove area – particularly 16 through 21 – are rockier, multiple guests say the erosion appears to be accelerating.

Travellers who visited the cabanas just two months earlier reported that the beach looked vastly different at that time.

The sudden change has left recent guests calling for caution and recommending that others consider different cabana options until the area can be stabilised.

“I would not recommend booking a Mabrika Cove Cabana outside of cabanas 1 through 5,” said the same guest, who visited Lookout Cay on July 17.

They also suggested that adults sailing without children might prefer one of the six cabanas at the Serenity Bay adults-only beach instead.

Disney Likely Working on a Fix

Disney Cruise Line is widely regarded as one of the most safety-conscious cruise brands in the industry.

It’s unlikely the company would continue renting out the affected cabanas if there were an imminent danger to guests – though temporary measures such as roping off stairs may not go far enough for some travellers.

It’s also likely that longer-term fixes are already being evaluated, such as installing erosion barriers, sea walls, or planting native vegetation to stabilize the shoreline.

In the meantime, all 20 Mabrika Cove Cabanas remain available for rent, and they remain among the most in-demand amenities on Lookout Cay.

All of the Mabrika Cove Cabanas are fully furnished and designed to offer a luxurious beach day, complete with shaded seating, beverages, plush towels, a mini-fridge, power outlets, and even a smart tablet for ordering food and drinks.

Cabanas 3–19 are standard cabanas for up to 10 guests and start at just under $1,000 for six guests.

Cabanas 1, 2, 20, and 21 are larger Grand Cabanas for up to 16 guests and start at $1,375 for up to 10 guests.

Additional guests can be added to either type for $56 per person, up to the cabana’s capacity.

Until conditions improve, travellers booking cabanas at Mabrika Cove may want to double-check which number they’re reserving and stay aware of the changing shoreline.

Newest Cruise Line Resort Opens In Style

Carnival Cruise Line has officially opened its highly anticipated Celebration Key destination, welcoming thousands of guests to a beachfront paradise in Grand Bahama.

Celebration Key Opening Day Carnival

The honour of the inaugural visit went to Carnival Vista, which arrived on Saturday, 19th July 2025, marking the start of a new era for the cruise line.

The arrival of Vista and her 4,800 passengers was met with celebration, as Carnival “unlocked paradise” with fireworks, music, and a symbolic padlock opening to mark the launch.

A brass band and singers created a vibrant welcome, while cruise executives and special guests – including Carnival president Christine Duffy, Carnival Corporation CEO Josh Weinstein, and Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal – joined local Bahamian dignitaries for the ribbon cutting.

“Today marks an extraordinary milestone for Carnival as we open the first phase of our initial $600 million investment, with more to come… We’ve built the ultimate beach day for our guests whether they crave fun in the sun or relaxation under a palm tree.”

Christine Duffy

With over 25 years of planning behind it, Celebration Key is now open to guests for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring.

Festivities included a toast at the adults-only Pearl Cove Beach Club and a ribbon-cutting at the new retail area, Lokono Cove.

Celebration Key Opening

Shaquille O’Neal even took the first shot on the island’s new basketball court.

The opening ceremony also marked the beginning of Phase 1, with a pier already capable of accommodating two ships. Phase 2 is already underway, expanding the pier for even more vessels.

What’s Included and What to Expect

Carnival’s Brand Ambassador John Heald has been on the ground offering updates and walk-throughs, showing off the destination’s shaded seating, swim-up bar, plentiful lifeguards, and beach amenities.

Food-wise, every guest receives one complimentary meal from any of the 14 casual eateries on the island, with generous portions that include chicken tenders, burgers, mac and cheese, and more – all served with fries and a large cookie.

There are upscale options for those wanting more variety, including seafood-focused Gill’s Grill, and guests can use their Sail & Sign card or personal credit card, as Celebration Key is entirely cashless.

Guests can enjoy the sweeping lagoon and explore local shopping areas, rent cabanas, or stay active with waterslides, kayak rentals, and jet ski rides.

One tip from Heald: bring your beach towel from the ship, as towel stations were not yet operational during the inaugural visit.

Sharks at Celebration Key? Here’s the Truth

Despite the excitement, some guests have raised concerns about marine life, particularly sharks, as Celebration Key is located just off the coast of Grand Bahama – not far from the well-known Tiger Beach area.

A concerned parent wrote to Heald asking whether Celebration Key was safe for children, particularly given the island’s proximity to areas where sharks are common.

“Celebration Key is part of Grand Bahama. There’s no concerns with sharks that I have seen reported by our guests or onboard teams,” Heald confirmed, adding later with his trademark humour “I can definitely say there will be no sharks tomorrow or throughout next week because all the sharks are appearing on National Geographic.”

While shark attacks in the Bahamas are extremely rare – with only 34 recorded since 1580 – Carnival does offer a controlled “glass bottom boat & shark experience” as an optional excursion for guests keen to see these creatures safely.

For families who are still wary, both Starfish Lagoon and Calypso Lagoon offer large freshwater pool alternatives where sharks aren’t a concern.

Starfish Lagoon is family-friendly, while Calypso is an adults-only retreat.

More to Come

Following Vista’s debut call, Carnival Conquest was next to visit Celebration Key on Sunday, 20th July.

Mardi Gras – the first Excel-class ship – is scheduled for arrival on Friday, 25 July.

Over time, all 20 Carnival ships will include the destination on itineraries departing from 10 different US homeports.

With sunshine, music, and tropical flair, Carnival’s Celebration Key is already making waves – and not the kind that involves fins.

Residential Cruise Ship To Add Floating Oasis At Sea

Guests aboard the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey are set to enjoy an all-new ocean experience starting in late 2025, thanks to a first-of-its-kind floating platform developed exclusively for the vessel.

The ship will deploy the “Customized Floating Oasis” while visiting some of the world’s most exotic ports in the South Pacific, including the Maldives and Seychelles.

Created in partnership with AquaBanas, the platform will serve as a versatile Floating Marine and Recreation Hub, offering a space for sunbathing, water sports, and even tendering assistance in remote locations.

“With our global itinerary, we often visit breathtaking destinations that require tendering to reach shore… Our residents are seeking more than just a place to live – they want experiences.”

Mikael Petterson, Chairman of Villa Vie Residences

The inflatable platform can be deployed from either side of the 24,300-gross ton Villa Vie Odyssey and will include shaded loungers, a cutout for an in-ocean pool, and docking points for kayaks and jet skis.

Villa Vie Odyssey Floating Oasis

It may also be used to support disembarkation in ports without tender infrastructure.

The innovation is a major step for AquaBanas, a company already known for its inflatable platforms at destinations such as Half Moon Cay and the newly opened Celebration Key in the Bahamas.

“This oasis will redefine how people enjoy the adventures and luxuries of ocean living,”

AquaBanas CEO Mark Anastasia

Oceanfront Living, Reimagined

While AquaBanas platforms typically come at a steep rental fee – $499.99 per day for up to eight guests at Celebration Key – it’s not yet clear if Villa Vie Odyssey guests will be charged to use the new onboard feature.

With a guest capacity of 929, access may be limited and weather-dependent, but the floating hub adds a luxurious and practical perk for the ship’s long-term residents sailing the Continual World Cruise.

The new platform also reflects a broader trend in cruise innovation.

AquaBanas’ catalogue already includes floating daybeds, party islands, and even full-sized pickleball courts.

If this partnership proves successful, Villa Vie could eventually add additional features – maybe even a floating pickleball court at sea.

Since launching in October 2024 after multiple delays, Villa Vie Odyssey has sought to define a new way of life at sea, blending comfort, exploration, and community.

With the addition of the AquaBanas platform, the ship is taking that lifestyle one step closer to the ocean itself.

How To Choose The Best Machu Picchu Tours Based On Your Travel Style

Machu Picchu is a bucket-list destination high up in the Peruvian Andes for adventurers, history buffs, and nature lovers alike. With the Inca ruins’ UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s no wonder that there are many tour operators out there to let everyone enjoy the remnants of the once mighty Inca Empire.

But with so many tour options available, how do you pick the right one for your travel style? Whether you’re a luxury seeker, a budget backpacker, or a thrill-chasing trekker of the Andes mountains, this guide will help you find the perfect Machu Picchu experience.

Understand Your Machu Picchu Travel Preferences

Before booking a tour, ask yourself:

  • What’s your Machu Picchu trip budget? (Splurge vs. save);
  • How active are you? (Hiking vs. relaxing);
  • Do you prefer group tours or private experiences of the world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site?; and
  • How much time do you have to explore the Inca Empire’s wonders? (Day trip vs. multi-day adventure)

Your answers will shape the best tour choice for you.

For instance, there are available companies that offer Machu Picchu tours from Cusco that are convenient, worth it, enjoyable, and a perfect fit for your travel preferences. Do check them out.

For the Luxury Traveler: Premium Comfort and Exclusive Access

If you want to experience Machu Picchu and the Inca highlands in style, opt for high-end tour operators that include:

  • Private Inca trail guides: Skip the crowds with personalized attention from one-on-one trek leaders, Inca civilization road scholars, mountain rescue experts (for those who are prone to altitude illness and so on), and others.
  • Luxury train rides: Take advantage of top-of-the-line Inca rail lines that go to the Inca highlands. These rail tours offer gourmet meals, live entertainment, access to satellite phones, emergency oxygen cylinders for weary travelers, and other amenities worthy of world travel awards.
  • Highly-rated mountain lodges of Peru: Stay at hotels that are on top of travelers’ choice lists.
  • Sunrise/sunset access: Some tours arrange exclusive entry times for magical lighting and fewer tourists in Machu Picchu.

Your exquisite tastes have room in your next Machu Picchu.

For the Budget Backpacker: Affordable Yet Authentic

You don’t need deep pockets to explore Machu Picchu. Here’s how to do it economically:

  • Take the train smartly. Take cheaper ones instead of luxury options.
  • Stay in Aguas Calientes. It’s a nearby town that has hostels that offer budget-friendly stays.
  • Book a group tour; shared tours cut costs significantly.
  • Hike the Inca Trail independently? No—you must book a licensed operator, but shorter treks (like the two-day Inca trail) are cheaper than the classic four-day hike.

Your best tour pick? A small-group budget tour with basic lodging and train tickets included.

If you live for adrenaline, Machu Picchu has legendary hikes:

1. Classic Inca Trail (Four Days)

The most famous route is the classic Inca trail. It requires permits and advanced bookings. This four-day trip covers the Sun Gate sunrise arrival.

2. Salkantay Trek (Five Days)

The Salkantay Trak has tougher, higher altitude, stunning views. It’s less crowded and has more diverse landscapes.

3. Lares Trek (Four Days)

The Lares Trek offers cultural immersion with Andean villages. It has fewer tourists and more authentic interactions.

4. Inca Jungle Trek (Three to Four Days)

The Inca jungle trek offers biking, hiking, and ziplining. It’s freat for thrill-seekers.

For the Time-Crunched Traveler: Short and Efficient Tours

Only got a day or two? You can still experience Machu Picchu without missing out.

Your first option is a one-day tour from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Your trip consists an early train to Aguas Calientes and a guided tour (all taking place on the same day). This is best for those with tight schedules.

Your other option is a two-day tour with an overnight stay. It has a more relaxed pace, which includes a night in Aguas Calientes.

For the Culture Enthusiast: Deep History and Local Experiences

If you love learning, choose a tour that dives into Machu Picchu’s past:

  • Archaeology-focused guides: Experts explain Inca engineering and myths.
  • Sacred Valley add-ons: Visit Ollantaytambo, Pisac, and Moray first.
  • Homestays or weaving workshops: Some tours include visits to local communities and immersion activities like weaving and cooking classes.

Recommended best tour pick: a multi-day Sacred Valley plus Machu Picchu tour with cultural stops.

For the Solo Traveler: Safe and Social Options

Traveling alone? Machu Picchu is safe, but group tours help with logistics and meeting people.

Small-group tours are more personal than big bus groups. On the other hand, some operators cater to solo women travelers. Finally, hostel-organized tours are great for meeting fellow backpackers.

For Families: Kid-Friendly and Flexible Tours

Bringing kids? Choose tours that are:

  • Shorter hikes: Avoid strenuous treks; stick to train rides.
  • Engaging guides: Look for family-friendly storytelling.
  • Flexible pacing: Breaks and slower walks help little legs.

Your best tour pick? A private family tour with a customizable itinerary.

Essential Booking Tips for Any Traveler

No matter your style, follow these tips for a hassle-free Machu Picchu trip:

  • Book early; permits for Inca Trail sell out fast.
  • Check inclusions in your trip. Does the tour cover trains, tickets, meals?
  • Read reviews to reveal real experiences.
  • Pack smart – Layers, rain gear, and broken-in hiking shoes are a must.

Ready? Your Inca adventure begins now.

Final Thoughts: Your Perfect Machu Picchu Tour Awaits

Machu Picchu isn’t a one-size-fits-all destination. Whether you’re a luxury lover, a budget backpacker, or a hiking tours junkie, there’s a tour tailored just for you.

Now that you know your options, it’s time to pick—and start counting down to the trip of a lifetime.

Reasons to Visit Celebration Key, Carnival’s New Port in The Bahamas

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening for Celebration Key, Carnival Cruise Line’s new private port in The Bahamas.

Celebration Key, Carnival's new port in The Bahamas

I joined a group of media and travel agents who flew in for the day so we can get a first hand look at what this new port has to offer.

We spent around five hours at Celebration Key, exploring every part of what this new $600 million port in The Bahamas.

Early feedback we’ve received from guests who have visited the port have been extremely positive. Also, reactions on Cruise Fever’s social media posts from our day at the port have exceeded our expectations. We posted a photo tour on our Facebook page and it has nearly 1.5 million views and counting at the time of press.

Note: I took many of these photos before passengers got off the ship so that is why there are no guests in most of them.

What’s so great about Celebration Key and why can’t cruisers get enough of this new port?

Here are reasons why you should visit Celebration Key and a look at how the port will expand in the future and offer guests even more options and activities.

Pools

The two main swimming pools, Starfish Lagoon and Calypso Lagoon, are the crown jewel of Celebration Key. They are separated by a walkway that leads through the 10-story sandcastle.

When I first saw the pools, I couldn’t believe how insanely large they were. They are a combined 550,000 square feet, or 12.6 acres in size. They hold 350 million gallons of water and the maximum depth of the pools is five feet. It’s mindboggling how large the pools are once you see them in person.

starfish lagoon pool at celebration key
Starfish Lagoon pool at Celebration Key. The 10-story sandcastle in the background is in the middle of the two massive pools.

The pools are a combined 16.5 times larger than the freshwater pool at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in The Bahamas. They take up 20% of the current developed port area.

They have swim-up bars, cabanas to rent, and plenty of complimentary loungers and umbrellas.

calypso lagoon celebration Key

Starfish Lagoon caters towards families while Calypso Lagoon is an adult-friendly area.

If you love to chill in a massive pool on hot, sunny day, then Celebration Key is for you.

There is a kids splashpad next to Starfish Lagoon and it’s one of the first things you see when you enter the port and look to the right.

splash pad for kids at celebration key

There is also an 11,000 square foot infinity pool in the adults-only beach club, but more on that in a bit.

Want to see which cruises visit Celebration Key? You can view cruises and prices here.

Beaches

starfish beach celebration key

There are three beaches at Celebration Key, although it’s really one large beach divided by the pier and a separate area for the Pearl Cove Beach Club.

The beaches are lined with complimentary loungers and umbrellas and were much quieter on my day there than the pools were.

Adults-Only Areas

A decent size part of the port is adults-only (18+), this includes Calypso Beach, areas of Calypso Lagoon, and the Pearl Cove Beach Club.

swim up bar celebration key

The Pearl Cove Beach Club, located at the western end of Celebration Key, has an infinity pool with views of the ship, and an elevated, private restaurant just for guests who purchase a day pass to the club.

The infinity pool has a swim-up bar and the Pearl Cove Beach Club is the largest adults-only area at any cruise destination.

infinity pool pearl cove beach club celebration key

I spent a couple hours in this area and it’s a great way to enjoy a premium day at Celebration Key.

I was also told that the Beach Club has room to expand when Carnival adds the pier extension to accommodate more ships.

Excursions

It is worth noting that Celebration Key is not a private island, but a dedicated private port area on Grand Bahama Island. It’s about a 40 minute drive away from the cruise port in Freeport.

Because you are on a large island, you can take excursions to experience local culture if you don’t want a beach/pool day.

Most of the excursions offered on cruises that stop in Freeport are also offered when you visit Celebration Key.

Facts about Celebration Key

Celebration Key features the world’s largest swim-up bar with 166 in-water seats.

The longest and largest swings bar is also here with nearly 50 swings.

swings bar celebration key

The world’s first and largest 10-story sandcastle structure that has two 350-foot long water slides. Note, there is an extra charge for an all-day pass to use the slides.

The two largest freshwater lagoons are located at Celebration Key, each one 275,000 square feet in size.

There are eight types of villas, cabanas and daybeds that can be rented out. Many of them are right on the water.

cabana celebration key

There are nearly 30 food and beverage outlets with 14 of the dining options being complimentary.

A Junkanoo parade will take place twice at day (at 1pm and 3pm) weather permitting.

There are two basketball courts, a pickleball court, and beach games for families.

There is a pier at Celebration Key that can accommodate two ships so there is no need to tender. Work has already begun on adding an expansion to the pier so four ships can visit in one day.

Future Expansion

Celebration Key is not done yet, this is just Phase 1. Phase 2 will take place on the east side of the port and Carnival has previously talked about building a waterpark in this phase.

Now that the port is open, I’m hoping that we will hear more details from Carnival about Phase 2 or who knows, maybe even a Phase 3.

Why do I say Phase 3? The total area for the port is 369 acres and the first phase only used 68 acres. With 110 acres set aside for a wetlands preserve, that leaves another 154 acres that Carnival can develop at the port. They can triple the size of Celebration Key, if they choose to, with future expansions.

It’s going to be exciting to see what they do with these 154 acres of land.

pool celebration key

Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, gave the following statement the day the port opened and talked about future expansion:

“Today marks an extraordinary milestone for Carnival as we open the first phase of our initial $600M investment, with more to come. Celebration Key is more than just a beautiful place; it’s a celebration of the Bahamian paradise our guests love, complemented by an impressive variety of incredible new experiences and offerings.

“We’ve built the ultimate beach day for our guests whether they crave fun in the sun or relaxation under a palm tree.”

Cruise Line Offers 200% Cruise Credit for Changing Sailing

There’s no feeling like having a cruise booked and spending the next few months getting ready for it.  For most people, it would have to be a pretty enticing offer to get them to change those plans.

But a recent email sent to some future cruisers on Celebrity Millennium is revealing just how enticing these offers can be.

Celebrity Millenium cruise ship in Yokohama Japan

What if you were offered a deal to cancel your future cruise and, in return, receive a 200% future cruise credit? Or perhaps move your trip to a similar sailing a year later, get half your money back, and score an extra onboard credit?

This is exactly the offer some passengers are now finding in their inboxes from Celebrity Cruises, under the heading, “Are Your Plans Flexible?”.

This message and seemingly too-good-to-be-true offer has prompted some to figure out what it actually means and what could have caused such an email to be sent.

One Reddit user recently posted about getting one of these emails for their March 2026 Japan honeymoon cruise. They’ve already booked flights and sorted out a bunch of time off work, so they naturally had some questions.

“I’m worried now that the cruise will get cancelled leaving us in a difficult position closer to the time,” they wrote in a popular cruise related subreddit.

But, as the email states, there are no worries for cruise guests who don’t want to change their plans.  Their cruise is not getting canceled and they can just ignore the email if they want to proceed with their original sailing.

So, what’s the deal with these “flexible plans” offers? Most experienced cruisers and people who know the industry agree on one main reason for these types of messages: the ship might have been overbooked.

“They oversold and need some people to not go,” commented one Reddit user,” comparing it to when airlines ask for volunteers to give up their seat for money.

The offers themselves are definitely attention-grabbing. In this cruiser’s specific case, Celebrity gave them two choices:

  • Option 1: Switch to a similar Celebrity Millennium cruise in March 2027. They’d get half their money back from their current booking, plus a $200 non-refundable Onboard Credit (OBC) for their room. Just a heads up: if they’d already paid for the whole trip, that 50% refund on the original fare basically turns into a 50% discount on the new cruise.
  • Option 2: Get a full refund for their current booking AND a huge 200% Future Cruise Credit (FCC) to use on another Celebrity cruise. This means they get all their money back, and then double that amount in credit for a future trip.

I would have a very hard time passing up on option 2, personally.

“Full refund AND 200% FCC? So get all your money back and double the money in credit? That is a slamming deal and I bet people are going to jump on it,” stated one comment.

But for the OP who posted the email, the situation was a little different.  This cruise is for their honeymoon—kind of a big deal.  And while the balance has not yet been paid in full, flights have already been booked and over 4 weeks have been taken off of work.

“You don’t have anything to worry about though. The offers are sweet enough that people with flexibility will take them,” assured one comment. “There’s nothing for you to be concerned about if you aren’t interested in changing.”

These “move over offers,” as they’re called in the cruise world, are a normal way for cruise lines to manage how many people are on board.

Several Reddit users guessed why they might be overbooked. “Cherry blossom season, high demand,” suggested one, pointing to how popular Japan cruises are during certain times.

Sometimes, big group events can be booked on a cruise as well, meaning cruise lines have to free up some cabins.

  • Easy ocean access

The marina will be able to be launched from both sides of the ship and is designed with both luxury and safety in mind. It can be utilized in tropical places when the ship is at anchor like the Maldives, Seychelles and the South Pacific.

It can also be used to enhance tendering operations where docking structures are limited or non-existent.

The cruise line said that it will enhance the at-sea lifestyle and compliment their mission to provide a unique, global living experience.

It is expected to debut on the ship in September 2025 when the ship visits the South Pacific.

Mikael Petterson, Chairman of Villa Vie Residences, gave the following statement:

“With our global itinerary, we often visit breathtaking destinations that require tendering to reach shore. Our residents are seeking more than just a place to live – they want experiences. This innovative addition reflects our commitment to reimagining life at sea, combining luxury, exploration, and community.”

AquaBanas, known for their premium inflatable platforms used by superyachts and resorts worldwide, brings their cutting-edge design and marine engineering to this collaboration.

The custom structure will feature a lounging zone, water sport launch points, and seamless integration with the Villa Vie Odyssey for effortless access and tendering operations.
