Cunard Makes Disappointing Change To Room Service Offering

Cruise line Cunard will begin charging guests in Britannia-grade staterooms for room service orders placed after 10 am, starting from June 2025.

Cunard Room Service

The change applies across the fleet and marks a shift in the cruise line’s traditionally inclusive approach to in-cabin dining.

Breakfast room service will remain complimentary if ordered before 10am, regardless of stateroom category.

Guests sailing in Princess Grill and Queens Grill suites will continue to enjoy full room service at no additional charge.

Cunard is informing affected guests via email, stating:

“We are writing to inform you of a change in our room service on board. Across the fleet, we are introducing new charges that will apply to room service dishes served after 10.00am in Britannia grade staterooms.

“Our breakfast items, available before 10.00am, will remain complimentary. And of course, you’re welcome to dine at the buffet where you’ll find a selection of dishes through the day and into the night, all included in your fare.”

The change brings Cunard into line with several other mainstream cruise operators, most of which charge for room service outside breakfast hours unless guests are staying in premium accommodation categories.

Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian Cruise Line typically offer complimentary continental breakfast, but charge for other room service meals, often through à la carte pricing or service fees.

By contrast, ultra-luxury cruise lines such as Viking, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises continue to offer complimentary room service at all hours, regardless of stateroom category.

Cunard’s decision follows other recent service changes onboard, including new venues and dining options introduced aboard Queen Anne, the latest ship in the fleet.

The company has not disclosed the exact pricing structure for post-breakfast room service orders, but more details are expected to be available onboard or via the Cunard website in the lead-up to the change.

This update is part of a broader industry trend toward modifying inclusive amenities, as cruise lines continue to balance operational costs with guest expectations.

Many guests are likely to be disappointed by the news, as they consider Cunard to be the last bastion of traditional style cruising, which included touches such as free room service to make the experience feel more special.

Several feel that the latest ship, Queen Anne, has moved slightly too far away from the traditional Cunard feel, and that these new changes across the fleet are a sign that the cruise line is shifting to be more like other, more mainstream options.

Loyal fans may now feel that they are being pushed towards booking a more expensive Queens Grill or Princess Grill accommodation rather than a Britannia cabin, if they wish to preserve their ideal Cunard experience.

Royal Caribbean App Mishap Bombards Cruise Fans

Royal Caribbean cruise passengers received a surprising barrage of test notifications on 29th May 2025, when the cruise line’s mobile app began sending out repeated, unexplained alerts – none of which were tied to cruise updates or itinerary changes.

Royal App Glitches

The push notifications, which simply read variations of “test segment,” began early in the day and continued at frequent intervals, leaving app users both confused and amused.

Reports quickly surfaced on Reddit and other forums, with users tracking how many notifications they had received.

“I’m up to 26 so far,” wrote one user. “Let’s take a bet – how high will the numbers go?” another chimed in.

Some passengers reported receiving between 15 and 40 notifications by midday, with no clarity at first whether the barrage was an internal error or some kind of cryptic app test.

One poster summed it up: “Someone’s getting fired.”

Royal Caribbean Responds

By late afternoon, Royal Caribbean acknowledged the mishap via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating:

“Our IT teams are aware of a series of test notifications inadvertently sent out through the RCI mobile app, and they are working to resolve the issue. We’re sorry for any inconvenience.”

The cruise line’s iOS app update version 1.66.3, launched the same morning, was quickly suspected to be the cause. The update ironically promised “bug fixes and performance improvements”, making the glitch all the more awkward.

Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, later shared an update on social media:

While some passengers expressed mild annoyance, the vast majority responded with tongue-in-cheek humour.

“Royal Caribbean just sent more push notifications in one hour than my spouse has texts in a week,” joked another.

“Introducing Royal Caribbean’s Push Club – get 50 notifications and earn free WiFi.”

A few even demanded compensation – half seriously, half playfully – suggesting drink package discounts or branded merchandise.

No System Outages, Just an Embarrassing Glitch

Despite the flood of alerts, no functionality issues were reported with the Royal App. Platforms like Downdetector did not show an increase in service disruptions, indicating the app remained operational throughout.

Despite the mishap, the Royal App remains a critical tool for cruise travellers. It enables passengers to:

  • Check in pre-cruise
  • View itineraries and port information
  • Reserve dining, excursions, and onboard activities
  • Monitor expenses during their sailing

With nearly 2 million downloads and ratings of 4.6 (Google Play) and 4.8 (App Store), the app continues to be one of the most highly-rated in the cruise industry.

While a series of rogue notifications is hardly ideal, the incident was relatively harmless – and judging by the online response, Royal Caribbean’s guests were more amused than angry.

Still, it serves as a reminder that even the smoothest digital platforms can have the occasional hiccup.

Celebrity Cruises to Invest $250 Million in Solstice-Class Upgrades

Celebrity Cruises has announced a $250 million refurbishment plan for its five Solstice-class ships, marking a major upgrade more than a decade after the final vessel in the series entered service.

Celebrity Cruises Solstice Class Renovation

The transformation will begin with Celebrity Solstice in early 2026, delivering a range of enhancements including new stateroom categories, upgraded luxury spaces, and new dining and entertainment venues.

Celebrity Solstice, the namesake of the class and the first to launch back in 2008, will undergo a comprehensive dry dock before returning to service in March 2026.

Her first sailing post-refit is scheduled to depart Singapore on 26th March 2026, bound for Sydney on a 14-night voyage.

“Our Solstice Series ships represent the best of classic cruising, and now we’re elevating this vacation experience even further,”

Laura Hodges Bethge, President of Celebrity Cruises.

New Staterooms and Luxury Retreat Upgrades

Once renovated, Celebrity Solstice will offer four brand-new stateroom categories:

  • Panoramic Infinite Veranda Suite
  • Deluxe Panoramic Oceanview Suite
  • Panoramic Ocean View Suite
  • Deluxe Panoramic Ocean View

Bookings for these new accommodation types are expected to open in mid-June 2025.

Guests staying in The Retreat, the line’s luxury suite enclave, will benefit from a redesigned Retreat Lounge, a new sundeck with a hot tub, and refreshed suite interiors.

Several new entertainment venues will be introduced, including the Boulevard Lounge, a cabaret-style performance space offering concerts, daytime trivia and more. The accompanying Boulevard Bar will serve as a lively cocktail destination.

A new sports bar concept, Celebrity Barcade, will feature multiple screens for live sporting events and interactive games such as darts and billiards.

Celebrity Cruises Barcade coming to Solstice Class Ships

The ship’s culinary line-up will also expand with:

  • Fine Cut Steakhouse, already a favourite on Celebrity’s Edge-class ships, offering dry-aged steaks and premium seafood
  • Trattoria Rossa, an Italian venue with table-side service and freshly prepared pasta dishes

Enhanced Outdoor Spaces and Family Fun

Up on the top deck, the ship will debut Sunset Park, a half-acre outdoor space with food and drinks, live music, lawn games, and family-friendly entertainment.

A larger Sunset Bar and private cabanas will also be introduced.

Although the cruise line has not publicly confirmed dry dock dates, Celebrity Solstice has no cruises scheduled from 15th January to 25th March 2026, suggesting the renovation will take place during this window.

After her refit, the ship will operate a Transpacific cruise from Sydney to Hawaii, followed by a repositioning to Vancouver for her Alaska summer season, beginning 3rd May 2026.

A full timeline for the other Solstice-class vessels – Celebrity Equinox, Eclipse, Silhouette, and Reflection – has not yet been released.

The Solstice-class ships remain among the most admired in the Celebrity Cruises fleet, blending modern design with sophisticated touches.

This multi-ship refit signals the brand’s continued investment in enhancing guest experience across both classic and next-generation vessels.

As well as the more modern Edge Series, the cruise line also operates the older Millennium Class, with those ships recently undergoing their own renovations.

Chaos As Ship Breaks Away From Moorings Sending Guests Into The Water

Cruise passengers in the Sicilian port of Catania, Italy faced a dramatic turn of events on 30th May 2025, when Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic broke free from its moorings amid strong winds, sending parts of the dock flying and causing two guests to fall into the water.

The incident unfolded shortly after 1pm local time, as guests were returning to the ship during a scheduled port call.

Eyewitnesses described loud cracks as the ship’s mooring lines gave way one by one, reportedly pulling concrete fixtures out of the pier and launching them towards the ship’s hull.

“All of a sudden, we heard this loud bang,

“One by one, the concrete nubs in the ground that hold the ropes were pulling out of the ground and went flying into the ship.”

Guest comments to local reporters

As the lines snapped, at least one female passenger fell from the gangway into the harbour. Her husband, in an effort to help, jumped in after her.

Emergency responders quickly retrieved both individuals from the water.

Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that both guests sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

“On-duty crew members were able to immediately assist the guest from the water and see that they were evaluated by the medical team,” a spokesperson stated.

The Italian Meteorological Service had issued a moderate wind warning earlier in the day, with gusts reportedly reaching 57mph (92km/h).

While the full cause of the incident remains under investigation, early indications point to a combination of dock infrastructure failure and mechanical strain from the shifting ship.

The 155,873-gross-ton vessel, capable of accommodating over 4,000 passengers, drifted into the harbour before regaining control and returning to port.

Port authorities paused all reboarding activity until the winds calmed, prompting frustration among guests left stranded ashore.

Delayed Return for Frustrated Passengers

Initially told they might be able to reboard by 4 or 5pm, passengers ultimately waited until 7:15pm to begin re-embarking, over six hours after the incident.

Video shared on a Norwegian Epic Facebook group post showed huge crowds waiting to board the ship.

“Everyone is stuck at the port, very little information from NCL,

“Some of us have been waiting here since noon. Very little water, older folks are hot, there is not enough water or seats.”

Norwegian Cruise Line later stated, “During this interruption, our crew were actively attending to our guests until they were able to re-embark the ship. As always, the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority.”

Despite the disruption, Norwegian Epic remains on schedule to visit Naples on 31st May, before continuing to Livorno and Cannes, with the voyage concluding in Civitavecchia (Rome) on 3rd June 2025.

Mooring line failures are not unheard of – earlier this year, Holland America’s Rotterdam also experienced broken lines during high swells, resulting in a missed port call.

The incident with Norwegian Epic, however, stands out due to the guest injuries and scale of disruption.

Authorities in Catania, alongside Norwegian Cruise Line, are continuing to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the near-disaster.

Who It Affects And Why

Worried you’ll spend your cruise feeling queasy instead of sipping cocktails by the pool? You’re not alone.

Seasickness is one of the biggest concerns for first-time cruisers, especially when you’re spending serious money on your holiday. The good news? Most people feel absolutely fine… even in rough seas.

people going on a cruise vacation

But for a small group, even gentle waves can cause problems. So, how likely is it really you’ll get seasick? Here’s what you need to know before you book.

Whilst it is possible to get seasick on a cruise ship, the truth is that most people don’t. It’s also becoming less of an issue with the size of modern ships and the technology involved. Technically, seasickness is just another name for motion sickness.

That means you can usually predict if you’ll suffer from seasickness if you’ve ever suffered from motion sickness in the past, which you would normally notice if you were frequently car sick. Ocean waves do move a ship differently from the movements of a car, so it is possible to get seasick even if you don’t get car sick, but it’s really rare.

Consider how many people book a cruise, and then book a second, third, fourth, and so on…would people be doing that if a lot of them were getting seasick?

The fact that people tend to cruise multiple times once they’ve tried it once is enough of a statistic to tell you how little seasickness is a problem!

Couples on a Cruise Ship

Feeling The Waves On A Cruise Ship

Whilst you can feel the waves on a cruise ship at times, normally you’ll forget you’re even on a ship when you’re indoors. Modern cruise ships are so large that it’s hard to feel the movement; they have stabilisers to help reduce the feeling of motion throughout the ship.

They also have wave detection technology, which makes it a lot easier for the ship’s officers to steer her away from any turbulent seas. During storms, you might notice some movement, or if you’re standing on a high deck close to the front or rear of the ship.

But for the most part, you’ll barely even notice you’re moving unless you’re standing looking out of the window or on an outside deck.

Can you get sea sick on a cruise ship even when the waves are calm, though? Sadly, yes, if you’re sensitive to motion. You might not even realise that it’s the motion you’re feeling.

How Many People Get Seasick On Cruises

It’s impossible to say how many people get seasick on a cruise. Around 1 in 3 people get motion sickness, but how much you’ll feel it on a cruise ship varies hugely.

Studies that have been carried out are focused on too small a group (less than 200 participants) or on small ships only, where the movement of the boat is much more noticeable. So, they aren’t useful when trying to measure how likely it is to affect you.

According to medical studies, motion sickness affects a lot of people but only in certain conditions (source).

There’s no easy way to predict how many people on any given cruise ship will get seasick, unfortunately, but if you’re concerned, then just spend any amount of time speaking to past cruise travellers on cruise forums. You’ll soon see how few people have suffered, which should put your mind at ease.

cruise ship view

Why Seasickness Affects Some More Than Others

There’s no clear answer to why some people get seasick and others don’t. It’s generally attributed to people who have a disconnect between their senses that respond to motion. If the eyes, inner ear, and skin nerves aren’t in harmony, it can cause confusion and queasiness.

While we can’t yet explain what causes certain individuals to be immune and others to be highly susceptible, we do know some information from that medical study above:

  • Women are more susceptible to motion sickness than men
  • The older you are, the less likely you are to feel any queasiness during motion, likely because the sensory receptors aren’t as powerful. Motion sickness actually peaks at age 9
  • People who are aerobically fitter tend to suffer more than those who are less fit because their autonomic system is more reactive
  • Patients with certain existing medical conditions, such as vertigo, migraines, vestibular pathology and Meniere’s disease, are more likely to get seasick
  • Elevated hormone levels, caused by the menstrual cycle or pregnancy, can also increase the risk

So, if you’re a young, fit woman who has a history of carsickness and suffers from migraines, you might want to stock up on some anti-sickness medication before you travel, just in case. But that doesn’t mean you will be affected. Just that you’re more likely.

Here are a few tips on how to know if you will get seasick on a cruise.

1. Consider Your History Of Motion Sickness

If you’ve ever experienced motion sickness before, either on a roller coaster or a boat ride, it’s likely you could experience it again in the open ocean. If you’ve experienced motion sickness in the past, you’re much more likely to feel seasick on a cruise.

2. Know Your Ship

If you’re cruising to an area that’s known for rough seas on board a smaller, older ship and you have a cabin right at the top, then there’s a good chance that you may feel a little queasy at some point. Choose your cruise carefully to minimise the risk.

3. Talk To Your Doctor

If you have any medical conditions or take any medications, it’s important to talk to your doctor before booking a cruise. Some medications can increase the risk of motion sickness, and your doctor can help you with this.

healthcare workers

How Long Seasickness Lasts On A Cruise

Most people who do feel seasick will recover in a day. In very rare cases, it can last longer if left untreated, and cause the traveller to suffer for the duration of their cruise (and sometimes beyond, up to a couple of weeks).

In most cases, once you get used to the motion of the ship or you get through whatever stormy waters are causing you to feel nauseous, you’ll feel right as rain and be ready to fully enjoy the rest of your holiday.

If seasickness persists, it’s recommended that you speak to the cruise ship’s doctor to see if there are any causes that they can help to eliminate and any treatments that they can offer.

You won’t be able to claim a refund on your cruise because you were seasick, so the onus is on you to find a way past it and enjoy the holiday that you’ve paid for.

Sea sickness medication is always available from the medical centre on board. You may have to pay for it, but it’s often free of charge, depending on the ship.

sea sickness medicine

If seasickness tablets don’t work, then you can also ask for an anti-nausea injection. This will stop any vomiting, but it will make you feel sleepy and dehydrated, so it should be used as a last resort.

How To Prevent Seasickness On A Cruise

There are a lot of ways to prevent seasickness on a cruise. Avoid booking a cabin on a high deck near the bow or aft of the ship, and choose as large a ship as possible for your first cruise. Avoid itineraries travelling to known choppy waters and consider over-the-counter medication.

There are plenty of ways to avoid getting sea sick on cruise holidays, and it’s always much better to prevent it rather than try to cure it. Once it’s hit you, you tend to need to ride it out. So, travel prepared if you think there’s a chance that you might get seasick.

If you don’t, then no harm done – you can just relax and enjoy the holiday in full.

The Bottom Line

It’s understandable to be concerned about seasickness if you’ve never travelled on a cruise ship before. It doesn’t help that it was often a joke used for a cheap laugh whenever you saw someone on a boat in a movie or TV show.

In reality, it’s really not common – some people might feel a little bit funny on the first day, but not so much that they can’t enjoy all the food and drink that they were looking forward to.

And if you think you’re likely to get seasick, don’t forget to take steps to prevent it first. Don’t wait and see, as it’s a lot harder to get past it once it’s kicked in.

27 Hilarious Cruise Jokes To Make You Laugh

We cruisers love sunshine, buffets… and a good dad joke at sea. Whether you’re counting down to embarkation or just dreaming of the Lido deck, these clean and clever cruise jokes are guaranteed to make you smile.

From ship puns to passenger punchlines, here are the funniest cruise-themed jokes that won’t make you walk the plank – but might just leave you giggling like you’ve had one too many cocktails.

cruise mummy and her children similing with cocktails

1. Spring Break

A group of college kids went on a booze cruise for spring break. The ship sank and the young men escaped in a small lifeboat. They floated for several days, but nobody came to rescue them.

Eventually, delirious from a lack of fluid, one of the men noticed a bottle floating in the water. He reached over and picked it out. Suddenly, a genie emerged from the bottle with a loud whoosh.

“I am a genie and I can grant you one wish!” said the genie.

“That’s a no-brainer!” The frat boy said. “I wish the ocean were made of beer!”

The genie immediately granted the wish and then vanished,

“You idiot!” said the second kid. “Now we have to pee in the boat!”

2. Playing Cards

Q: Why couldn’t the cruisers play cards?

A: Because they were standing on the deck!

Cruise joke

3. Castaway

A cruise ship passenger is looking out to sea when he sees a small island. On the island, he spots a thin, suntanned man with wild hair. He can see the man jumping up and down and waving.

The passenger turns around and sees the Captain, so he draws his attention to the man.

“Captain, what’s up with that guy?”

The Captain shrugs his shoulders.

“No idea. He’s always that happy when we sail past.”

4. Two Oceans

Q: What did one ocean say to the other ocean?

A: Nothing, it just waved.

Cruise joke

5. The Nervous Cruiser

A very nervous first-time cruiser met the captain at the welcome reception.

“Do ships like this sink very often?” he asked.

“No,” said the captain. “Usually it’s just the once.”

6. Sunbathing And Reading

Two cruise passengers are lounging on sun beds, reading books. One notices that the other is reading a Che Guevara book.

The other passenger turns to him and asks

“Have you read Marx?”

“Yes”, he replied. “I think it’s from sitting on these deck chairs so long.”

7. The Booze Cruise

On the last night of the cruise, it’s discovered that there’s been a miscalculation with the food. Just before dinner, the captain announces over the loudspeaker…

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. I’m sorry to inform you that there are 2,000 passengers on board, but only enough food for 1,000 people. However, we do have plenty of drinks, so anyone who is willing to give up their meal will receive free drinks for the rest of the cruise.”

A few hours later, the captain makes another announcement…

“I apologise, but it appears that we have run out of alcohol. However, if anyone is hungry, we do still have 1,000 meals available.”

joke about drinks on cruise

8. The Magician And The Parrot

A magician worked on a cruise ship, performing the same tricks each week for new passengers.

The captain’s pet parrot came to all the shows and figured out how the tricks worked. He began to shout out during the shows. “It’s up his sleeve”, and suchlike, spoiling the illusions.

The magician was annoyed but couldn’t do anything as the parrot belonged to the captain.

One night, the ship sank. The magician found himself stranded on a desert island, along with the parrot. They stared at each other with hatred for days, neither uttering a word.

Finally, after three days, the parrot couldn’t hold back any longer.

“Okay, I give up”, he said. “What did you do with the ship?”

9. The Cabin Steward

My cabin steward is amazing! I went to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and my bed has been made!

Cruise joke

10. Scotch And Water

A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and asks for a Scotch with two drops of water.

She says: “I’m on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it’s today!”

“Congratulations!” says the bartender. “This one’s on me.”

As she finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, “I’d like to buy you a drink too”

“Thank you, ” says the lady. “I’ll have another Scotch with two drops of water”.

The man to her left says, “I’d like to buy you a birthday drink too”.

So the old lady orders yet another Scotch with two drops of water.

As the bartender gave her the drink, he asked the lady, “I’m so curious. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?

The old woman replies, “Sonny, when you’re my age, you’ve learned how to hold your liquor. Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue!”

11. The New Hat

An old lady was standing on the top deck of a cruise ship, holding tightly onto her hat so that it wouldn’t blow off in the wind.

A gentleman approached her and said: “Excuse me. I don’t mean to be rude, but your dress is blowing up in the wind!”

“Yes, I know,” said the lady, “I need both hands to hold onto my hat.”

“But, madam, you’re also not wearing underwear and people can see everything!” said the gentleman.

The woman looked down, then back up at the man and replied, “Sir anything you see down there is 85 years old. I just bought this hat yesterday!”

12. The Language Class

I once took a Spanish class on a cruise ship. But I got lost at sí.

Cruise joke

13. The Castaways

David was something of a ladies’ man, so when his cruise ship sank, and he found himself stranded on a desert island with six women, he couldn’t believe his luck!

The group agreed that each woman would have one night a week with the only man.

David threw himself into the arrangement with gusto. But, as the weeks stretched into months, he found himself looking forward to his day of rest more and more eagerly.

One afternoon, he was sitting on the beach, wishing for some more men to share his duties. Suddenly, he caught sight of a man waving from a life raft. David swam out, pulled the raft to shore, and did a little jig of happiness.

“You can’t believe how happy I am to see you,” he cried.

The new fellow eyed him up and down and said, “You’re a sight for sore eyes, too, you gorgeous thing!”

“Crap,” sighed David, “there go my Sundays.”

(Probably the safest of the dirty cruise ship jokes I could include!)

14. Which Sailors?

Q: Which sailors blow their noses most often?

A: The anchor chiefs.

Cruise joke

15. Trapped In The Cabin

A couple boarded a cruise ship and went up to their cabin. Later, they called guest services and asked for someone to help them get out of their room.

“What seems to be the problem?” asked the man at the desk.

“We only have two doors,” said the lady in the cabin. “One is the bathroom and the other says ‘do not disturb.”

16. The Two Priests

Two priests take a cruise. They don’t want to stand out, so they decide to buy casual clothes. They’ve just hit the lido deck in t-shirts, shorts and sandals when they spot an attractive woman in a tiny bikini walking their way. As she walks past them, she politely says, “Good afternoon, fathers.”

The men are amazed because they can’t understand how the woman knew they were priests.

They decide to go to the onboard shops and buy even more casual clothes. They buy Hawaiian shirts, surfer shorts and dark sunglasses.

The next day, they hit the lido deck again in their wild new clothes and the same woman passes them in a string bikini. As she passes, she says, “How do you do, fathers?”

Well, the two priests are really confused, so one of them asks the woman, “Excuse me, we’re not ashamed of being priests, but how in the world did you know who we were?”

The woman replies, “Why, father, don’t you recognise me? I’m Sister Catherine from the convent!”

17. Fastest Cruise Ship

Do you have time for a joke about the world’s fastest cruise ship? Don’t worry, it’s a quick one-liner.

Cruise joke

18. Rolex Below Decks

A rich guy took a cruise to a tropical island and decided to sunbathe on the beach. Wanting an even tan, he took off his luxury watch and slipped it into his pocket.

Back on board at the end of the day, he realised that his watch was gone. It must have fallen out of his pocket. Too embarrassed to admit he’d lost such an expensive item, he decided not to tell anyone.

A moment later, the Captain’s voice came on the loudspeaker. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is an announcement to the passenger who lost the Rolex Pearlmaster on the beach…the time is now 6:54 PM.”

19. Latest Cruise Ship Trend

Did you hear the latest trend is installing trampolines on cruise ships? Now everyone is jumping on board.

Cruise joke

20. Sinking Cruise Ship

A cruise ship sinks in the middle of the sea and the cruise passengers manage to escape on lifeboats. A woman then asks the Captain, “How far is the closest land?”

“3 miles,” he answers.

“That’s not too bad, in which direction?” she asks.

The Captain replied, “Down.”

21. Dock Above The Water

Q: What keeps a dock floating above water?

A: Pier pressure.

Cruise joke

22. Bankers Aweigh

Two bankers were the only survivors when their cruise ship sank. They were both clinging to a single life preserver. One banker, knowing that his colleague couldn’t swim, says, “I think I can make it to shore to get help. Can you float alone?”

The other banker replies, “How can you talk business at a time like this?”

23. Vegetables

Q: What vegetable isn’t allowed on cruise ships?

A: Leeks

Cruise joke

My son loves this joke, he told it to Captain Robert Camby on our cruise on Arvia. The captain laughed!

24. Shower Trouble

The showers in the cruise cabins are so small. I just soap the walls and spin around a few times!

Cruise joke

25. Emotional Baggage

I told my suitcase I wouldn’t be taking a cruise this year. Now I’m dealing with emotional baggage!

Cruise joke

26. Cruise News

Breaking news: Passengers trapped on a cruise ship on the ocean for 4 days.

On the bright side, it’s kind of what they paid for.

Cruise joke

27. Colour Clash

Q: Did you hear about the blue cruise ship that crashed into the red cruise ship?

A: The passengers were all marooned.

Summary

I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of the best cruise jokes. So many of the jokes about cruise ships seem to involve ships sinking. I suppose that a cruise is the start of many desert island jokes. I do like the cruise ship puns and jokes that aren’t accident-related, though!

If you love cruise ship humour, you’ll find that most cruise ships have comedy shows on board. There might be earlier shows that the whole family can enjoy and adult comedy shows after 10 pm.

Carnival Guest, Banned for Life After TikTok Video, Shares Ban Letter

Social media influencers do all kinds of things to get clicks and views, but sometimes all that attention can get them in trouble if they are breaking a company’s policy–or at least looking like that are.

A previous Carnival Cruise Line guest with a vibrant TikTok following has been banned by the cruise line after posting a video showing an alleged alcohol smuggling hack.

Carnival Conquest in open water sea

From Viral “Hack” to Lifetime Ban

TikToker Courtney Murley thought she had a clever trick for her Carnival cruise, and she decided to share it with the world. Now, instead of viral fame for a “hack,” she’s sharing a very different kind of social media post: her lifetime ban letter from Carnival Cruise Line.

It all started with a video Murley posted earlier this year, allegedly showing her and a travel companion successfully sneaking alcohol onto Carnival Conquest.

The TikTok post, which quickly racked up hundreds of thousands of views, showed the cruisers taking their luggage into their cabin, seemingly revealing liquor hidden in toiletry containers.

Her caption proudly stated the following:

“Def waited until after I got home to post this! Hahahaha but it worked. Forget a drink package lol…. okay we ended up drinking probably what we would of paid for a drink package anyways but still was fun to try and see if the rum runners would work.“

But Murley’s social media post quickly backfired. She recently received a letter from Carnival Cruise Line which she then shared on TikTok.

The letter clearly stated that her cruising days with Carnival were done:

“This letter is to inform you that you will not be able to sail onboard any Carnival Cruise Line vessel in the future due to the smuggling of alcohol onboard the Carnival Conquest on March 31st, 2025, and subsequently posting about it on social media platforms. Your attempt to book a future cruise will result in cancellation and a possible loss of deposit monies.”

Murley has since tried to backtrack, claiming her initial video was “satirical” and that she never actually smuggled alcohol, but rather showed “juice in a tampon flask” for “views.”

“What I’m mad about is that they are banning me for something that didn’t happen. They said for smuggling alcohol. I did not smuggle alcohol. Not one ounce of alcohol was smuggled onto the ship. Not one. Not a single drop. What you see on that video is not alcohol. Is everything on the Internet real?” Murley stated in her follow up post.

However, the damage was already done. For Carnival, the video itself promoted a clear violation of their policies.

Heald’s Warning: Social Media Is Being Watched

This isn’t an isolated incident, and Carnival is making it clear they’re not messing around. Carnival’s own Brand Ambassador, John Heald, has been sounding the alarm on his Facebook Live videos, reminding everyone that the cruise line is actively monitoring social media for precisely these kinds of “clever” tips and tricks.

Heald has openly talked about receiving numerous links from followers to social media videos where guests show off their hidden liquor tactics.

“Somebody – actually, I think it was at least a dozen people – wrote to me sending me a link to a social media video… where this – this is crazy, right?” Heald exclaimed, referencing the old (and prohibited) tricks like hiding booze in hairbrushes or umbrellas.

Carnival Horizon top deck

While acknowledging that these smuggling methods aren’t new—”We have known for years that you can go on Mrs. Amazon, and you can get used to smuggle booze in, right?”—Heald expressed particular frustration with the public boasting.

“But what absolutely drives me crazy – it makes me laugh, to be very honest – is when people get on the ship, and they go, ‘Ohh, look what we smuggled on board, a tube full of vodka. Ha Ha Ha! We’re so clever.’”

If you post about breaking their rules, especially the alcohol policy, you’re making it incredibly easy for them to find you. “Of course, of course, we have people monitoring social media pages, of course, we do. And then you monitor it, people watching it, and you send it to me, and you say, ‘Look, look!’”, Heald previously stated.

The consequences, as Courtney Murley learned the hard way, are swift and long-lasting.  While she can appeal the decision, it’s unlikely the cruise line will reverse course.

The message, as seen in the ban letter Murley received from Carnival, is pretty clear: that viral moment could cost you a lifetime of cruises.

In the follow-up post that showed the letter from Carnival, Murley stated “thank goodness we love MSC & Royal better“, but this has some wondering if cruise lines share this kind of information with each other.  In other words, will other cruise lines add names to their ban-list based on what they do on ships not in their brand?

This topic often comes up in relation to lifetime bans that are the result of fighting on cruise ships.  Time will tell if Murley’s followers see her sailing on another cruise ship in the near future.  But it’s unlikely she will be posting these kinds of “hacks” whether they are satire or not.

Biggest Cruise Ship Ever Arriving Sooner Than Expected

Royal Caribbean has announced that their next new cruise ship, Star of the Seas, will arrive sooner than expected.

Star of the Seas sea trials

Star of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world when it debuts in August. Since the ship is arriving early, the cruise line added a new earlier showcase cruise.

The new Star Showcase Cruise to Perfect Day will depart from Port Canaveral on August 16, 2025. This newly added four-day cruise will visit CocoCay and have two sea days.

This will now be the first sailing for this second Icon class ship. Before this, the ship was scheduled to debut on August 20, 2025, also a four-night sailing to The Bahamas.

After the four-day Showcase Cruises, Star of the Seas will sail seven-night cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Star of the Seas and Icon of the Seas

All cruises will visit Royal Caribbean’s highly rated private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Star of the Seas is currently under construction at Meyer Turk shipyard in Turku, Finland. The ship recently hit the open ocean for the first time for sea trials.

The sea trials were a massive success and the finishing touches are being put on the cruise ship before its debut in a couple months.

Star of the Seas will be divided up into eight neighborhoods.

Celebrity Cruises Reveals Massive $250 Million Upgrades Coming to Solstice-Class Ships

Before Celebrity Cruises’ Edge-class ships debuted in 2018, the 122,000 gross ton Solstice class vessels were the pride and joy of the cruise line. These ships were—and remain—a very popular class for Celebrity.

Now, these beloved vessels are about to get a major refresh. Celebrity Cruises just announced an investment of over $250 million to completely modernize its five Solstice-class ships, meaning your next sailing on one of these ships would look a lot different.

Celebrity Solstice class ships getting an upgrade

As someone who’s sailed on multiple Celebrity ships over the years, I can tell you that the Solstice class has always been one of my favorites. These ships, which debuted starting in 2008 with Celebrity Solstice, were innovative for their time – they were the first to feature a real grass lawn at sea as well.

Now Celebrity is taking them to the next level.

What’s Getting Updated

Celebrity is calling this transformation comprehensive, and they’re not kidding. The renovation will include eight completely new experiences, with four spaces that are brand new to the cruise industry, plus major refreshes to existing favorites.

Rendering: Celebrity Cruises

Brand New Venues Coming to Solstice Class

Boulevard Lounge – This intimate entertainment venue sounds like it’ll be the place to be in the evenings. Think cabaret-style entertainment with candlelit concerts, dueling pianos, and interactive daytime programming like game shows and trivia.

Boulevard Bar – Located right next to the lounge which allows passengers to stop by before or after a show.

Celebrity Barcade – An elevated sports bar where you can actually play games too. Multiple screens for watching sports, plus billiards, darts, and retro board games.

Trattoria Rossa – An Italian restaurant with tableside preparations and fresh pasta made daily. The authentic tableside service is a nice touch that you don’t see everywhere.

Fine Cut Steakhouse – Celebrity is bringing their Forbes Travel Guide-rated steakhouse from the newer Edge-class ships to Solstice class. This is significant because Fine Cut has been getting rave reviews. Expect 30-day dry-aged steaks and that elevated service Celebrity is known for.

Sunset Park – This transforms the top deck into a half-acre outdoor oasis with great views, cuisine, lawn games, and open-air concerts. Given that the Solstice class already has that famous lawn club, this expansion of outdoor space makes perfect sense.

Stateroom Upgrades and New Categories

All staterooms will get a complete refresh, which is always welcome news. But what’s really interesting is that Celebrity is adding four entirely new stateroom categories:

  • Panoramic Infinite Veranda Suite
  • Deluxe Panoramic Oceanview Suite
  • Panoramic Ocean View Suite
  • Deluxe Panoramic Ocean View

The focus on “panoramic” views is no accident as it looks like Celebrity wants to emphasize the ocean experience that makes cruising so popular and so different from a land-based resort.

Existing Venues Getting Makeovers

Celebrity isn’t just adding new spaces – they’re also refreshing popular existing venues including:

  • Café Al Bacio
  • Cellar Masters
  • World Class Bar
  • Martini Bar
  • Pool Bar
  • Passport Bar
  • Blu (exclusive to AquaClass guests)
  • Luminae (exclusive to The Retreat guests)
  • Fitness Center
  • Camp at Sea

Timeline and What This Means for Cruisers

The renovations start with Celebrity Solstice in March 2026, with the other four ships in the class (Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Silhouette, and Celebrity Reflection) following over the next few years.

These major renovations typically take ships out of service for 3-4 weeks, so expect some itinerary changes and adjustments while this goes on.

Celebrity President Laura Hodges Bethge said they’re “elevating this vacation experience even further by adding brand new experiences and enhancements at every turn” while “staying true to what made our guests fall in love with these ships in the first place.”

Given that Celebrity Solstice won’t complete its renovation until mid-2026, you have time to plan a cruise to check out some of these new enhancements.

Bottom Line

This $250 million investment shows Celebrity is serious about keeping their Solstice class competitive as these ships near 18+ years in service. The new venues sound like they will be very popular with the cruising crowd that already loved these ships to begin with.

Keep an eye out for more details as we get closer to Celebrity Solstice’s renovation in March 2026.

Crossing The Atlantic On Cunard’s Queen Victoria: A Perfect Voyage

We love cruising, and we love Cunard. We booked and paid for 14 nights from Fort Lauderdale to Southampton on Cunard’s Queen Victoria. This was the last segment of an approximately 80-night voyage around South America, and it was as close to perfect as you can get.

One of the primary elements that made it perfect were smooth seas.  Storms are beyond anyone’s control, but the Captain can attempt to steer around them.  As a result, we missed our port call in Bermuda, but we had 14 days of smooth sailing.

Cruise lines have personalities.  My idea of a perfect cruise is not everyone’s idea of a perfect cruise.  Generally speaking, Cunard is for people who enjoy dressing up.  The ship has a two story library because many passengers like to read.  The passengers are am international mix.

During the winter, Cunard does long voyages with at least two of its four ships.  We joined Queen Victoria for the last 14 days of an 80-day voyage around South America.  This is considered a Discovery voyage.  The other, more extended winter trip is the World Cruise.  You might think spending 100+ nights at sea on a World Cruise is a bucket list item.  For many of the passengers, these extended trips are an annual event.  They encounter friends they see once a year, but that get-together lasts three or four months.

Boarding in Fort Lauderdale

We boarded in Fort Lauderdale.  Although this was the start of our 14 nights, we were entering the last act of the 80-day voyage for the large number of people who were on for the entire trip.

Are they friendly?  Does the size of your cabin matter?  Cunard has had a class system for as long as anyone can remember.  The suites are called the Princess and Queens Grill categories.  They have restricted dining rooms, a cocktail lounge, and deck space.  Grill passengers have the run of the ship, but the majority of passengers, those of us traveling in Britannia class, cannot access their restricted areas.

Back to the friendly and status part.  You do not know where someone’s cabin is located unless they tell you.  Once you step outside your cabin, everyone is treated with the same respect by the ship’s company.  It is easy to make friends for several reasons:

  1. It is an imaginary world. In real weekday life, most of us do not have cocktails before dinner, enjoy a four-course meal, attend an evening show, or walk through a softly lit lobby with a piano playing in the background.
  2. People are in a good mood.  You are on vacation.  So is everyone else.
  3. You are disconnected from the real world.  Internet connectivity is not excellent.  TV news programs are limited.  World news is reduced to a short passenger newsletter.  You are disconnected from most of the worries associated with global news.
  4. Timelines are shortened.  Back on land, you might take weeks or months to cultivate a relationship.  It needs to fit in alongside work.  Onboard, this imaginary world wraps up after 14 days.  Relationships develop quicker.

We encountered fabulous people on our voyage.  Bear in mind, everyone is well-traveled.  The easiest way to meet people is to attend the trivia quizzes.  Our ship held them at least four times daily in the Golden Lion pub. (They attract 100+ people!)  I limit myself to one per day.  Here are some of the people we met.

  1. Let’s fall in love. The woman in the couple sailed on the QE2. On the voyage, she met her wine steward. They reconnected after the voyage, marrying four months later. They have been together for 40+ years.
  2. Police.  Another woman lives in Bermuda full-time.  She worked for Scotland Yard in London and was assigned to the murder squad in Bermuda during the unrest years ago.  She stayed and retired on the island.
  3. I think we know each other. We were getting off the elevator, and a fellow said, “I think we know each other.” He was a guest at our wedding in 1982, which was 43 years ago! I knew who he was immediately because we still use the wedding present he gave us.

We booked an ocean view cabin with an obstructed view.  It looked out over the lifeboats.  This was not a big deal, as you still get plenty of light.  The bigger issue was unexpected.  You notice the light changing and realize a crew member is on the catwalk, washing or painting something!  Thankfully, the windows have sheers and drapes.  The cabin is about 220 to 240 square feet.  The size id fine and there is plenty of storage space.  The only drawback is the shower, which has a curtain instead of a glass door.

Dining Options Onboard

It is a tradition that your meals are included with your cruise fare.  Cruise lines are hit by inflation, too.  Over the years, you can see a general “cutting back” taking place.  The menu in the Britannia dining room has less beef and lamb, more pork and chicken.  The menu still features four courses with five entrees available.  To balance off the beef and lamb issues, there are always three additional choices: steak frites, chicken, and salmon.  They also feature filet mignon and lobster à la carte items.  Portion sizes are small, which is good because you are constantly eating.  You can order seconds or double up if you choose.

The one place you can get into trouble is the Lido Buffet on Deck 9.  In this venue, you can have as much as you want from as many stations as you want.  After three days, my body told me, “Stop eating!”

Cruise ships have specialty restaurants. The Queen Victoria has one, the Verandah Steakhouse. As I recall, the lunch supplement is $35, and the dinner supplement is $65. However, the steaks are great, and the portions are abundant. We visited three times. My wine and food pairing lunch took place in the Verandah. We celebrated a tablemate’s dinner, and we both had lunch in the steakhouse.

What about entertainment?  There is plenty to do, and I must admit, even though we had 14 days, I did not scratch the surface.  Yes, we attended several of the Cunard Insights lectures.  My favorite was Sally Gunnel, OBE.  She won a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.  I faithfully attended the 4:30 PM daily quiz.  I caught a few minutes of the Cunard choir performance.  The captain conducts the interdenominational religious service on Sunday morning, and it is well done.  The art lectures were quite good.

What did I miss?  We did not catch any evening shows in the Royal Court Theater.  I knew there was a fencing class, but I missed it.  There was a performance of Pride and Prejudice I missed too.   I missed all of the various themed social get-togethers.

Cunard helps passengers meet by organizing meet-ups. There is a daily solo traveler gathering and another for Christian fellowship. They have one for Rotary members, Women’s Institute members, LGBTQ+, car enthusiasts, and even Argentine Tango dancers. You meet like-minded people and take it from there.

The ship’s British character comes through in many ways. There is afternoon tea, served at 3:00 PM. They have a British pub. When a major football (soccer) match is scheduled, several widescreen TVs in the Winter Garden show the game.

This was our first time seeing the Country Fayre, which apparently, they have on these extended voyages.  This is similar to a Village Fete, which is familiar to Midsomer Murders fans.  They have a series of games.  They also have a Second Rand Rose shop.  This sells clothing and other items donated during the voyage. (Possibly articles of clothing that no longer fit?)  This required days of organizing in advance.  Passenger volunteers sorted, sized, and priced clothing. Several passengers, you could tell, have done this back home in their villages. On the day of the event, the pop-up shop was mobbed.  Who would not buy shoes if the prices were $3.00, $5.00, or $10.00 a pair?

How about ports?  The day after we embarked, the ship stopped in Freeport, Grand Bahamas.  This was a non-event.  Perhaps a shore excursion would have made a difference.  We were back on the ship 30 minutes later.  We missed Bermuda because of the weather.  Our major port was in the Azores, Ponte Delgarda.  This was excellent.  We had an overnight visit.  We took a shore excursion which was very good.  We would return.  There is a lot to like.

We spent lots of time relaxing and doing nothing.  The ship has a two story library.  Why?  Because plenty of other people like to relax in a shaded spot on deck, reading a good book.

As you can tell, we had a great time.
