Baby & Toddler Cruise Packing List (Printable) Cruise Mummy

I’ve cruised when my kids were babies and toddlers, and know the perils of both overpacking and underpacking!

That’s why I’ve created this free printable baby cruise packing list – so you know exactly what to pack for your family cruise, and what to leave at home.

Family cruise with baby and toddler

I’ve listed all of the cruise essentials for toddlers and babies below, including links to buy some really handy things that I found online and then bought myself when we cruised with both a baby and a toddler.

I bet there are some things here you’d never have even considered!

Get the free printable PDF

Just enter your email address and you’ll immediately be sent the free baby packing list which you can print off or save on your phone.

When packing for a cruise with a baby, you’ll want to pack quite light, but not too light! If you can get to your cruise ship without flying, you won’t have any restrictions on how much luggage you can bring.

But, that doesn’t mean you should bring all the baby equipment you own! Cruise cabins are generally a bit smaller than hotel rooms, so if you bring too much, your stateroom will feel very cramped.

Here are my recommendations for things to bring on your cruise with a baby…

The Important Documents

Passport

Whilst US citizens can sometimes cruise without a passport, in most cases, you’ll need a passport to cruise.

The passport rules for babies are just the same as those for adults, so don’t forget to pack your baby’s passport. It should always be top of the list of baby cruise essentials.

Birth Certificate

If your child has a different surname to his or her accompanying parents, then you’ll also need to bring their birth certificate to prove that you’re the parent.

If the parents’ and child’s passport surnames don’t match, then you’ll be asked for a birth certificate at embarkation and won’t be allowed to board without it.

Visa

Most cruises don’t require a visa, but depending on where you’re going, you may need one. Be sure to check because if you need a visa, then your child will probably need one too.

Getting Around With Your Baby

You’ll need to be able to transport your baby or toddler safely and securely not just onboard your cruise ship, but also in port and on your journey between home and the ship. This may require more than one mode of transport, so think about what will work best for you.

Pushchair

Pushchair, stroller, pram, buggy – whatever you call it, you’re definitely going to need to bring it with you.

When it comes to pushchairs, the smaller and lighter the better. Some ships will let you leave your pram in the corridor, but you may be asked to leave it in your cabin. If your usual stroller is bulky, you might want to invest in a cheap umbrella stroller which you can easily fit under the bed.

“>

Sun Shade or Rain Cover

Unless your pushchair has a huge hood, you’ll benefit from bringing a sunshade that you can clip on, to keep your baby in the shade at all times.

Depending on the weather, you may also wish to bring a raincover.

Car Seat

If you plan on using a taxi at any point before, after or during your cruise, you’ll need to bring a car seat.

When you’re off your ship for excursions, carting around a car seat and a pushchair can be cumbersome. One solution is to invest in a travel system where the car seat attaches to the stroller.

Alternatively, you may wish to plan to use alternative modes of transport like buses, trains or ferries that don’t require a car seat.

Baby Carrier

Baby carriers are particularly handy when flying, for when you get off the plane and have to walk to the arrivals area to collect your pushchair.

If you usually use a baby carrier a lot, then pack it for your cruise. If you don’t, a cruise isn’t the time to get your baby used to one and you’ll probably be better off using your stroller in most situations on-board.

Backpack

As well as transporting your baby, you’ll also need something to transport all their stuff, both around the ship and when you explore ashore.

Now could be the time to ditch your traditional over-the-shoulder baby changing bag and instead use a standard backpack. Not only will you fit more stuff in there, but it also leaves you hands-free for when you have to manoeuvre luggage, a pushchair and possibly chase a toddler around too.

Toddler Reins/Backpack Leash

A toddler harness, reins or a backpack leash can be great for those tots who love to wander around on their own. Definitely a good idea for the cruise packing list for toddler children who are liable to dash off!

I tried a backpack on my toddler at Disneyland, and he just spun around like a confused puppy and whined until I took it off. So this is definitely something you want to test out at home before you travel!

Clothing Must-Haves

Your baby or toddler will likely wear several outfits per day on a cruise – something for during the day, a clean change of clothes for the evening, swimwear and nightwear. This can add up to a lot of clothes so if you don’t have that many, you might want to wash some part-way through your cruise.

Suggested read: How To Do Laundry on Cruise Ships

As well as the usual t-shirts, cardigans, hoodies, trousers, shorts, skirts and dresses, you’ll also need to pack…

Formal Outfit

A cute formal outfit like a dress or suit is a must. Even if you don’t particularly enjoy formal evenings, you could do it for the photos if nothing else. Here’s my baby and toddler in formal outfits on their first cruise…

my baby and toddler on first cruise

Shoes and Sandals

If your little one has started to walk you’re going to need their shoes and, if the weather is warm, a pair of sandals. Waterproof sandals are preferred. If there’s a baby splash area on-board, the surrounding floor could be hot, so they’ll definitely need something on their feet.

Swimwear

The best swimsuits for babies and toddlers offer full-body coverage from the neck to the elbows and knees. I’d recommend choosing a swimming costume with UV protection – it’s much easier than applying sunscreen every few hours.

Hat

For warm-weather destinations, a sunhat is a must. I usually pack two or three as they tend to go missing easily and it’s good to have a spare to hand..

Underwear and Socks

Don’t forget to pack lots of socks. Wearing socks with sandals may be a fashion no-no for adults but for toddlers, it can make their sandals so much comfier.

Bringing an extra five-pack of vests is always a good idea as these can be used as day wear, a base layer or for sleeping.

Pyjamas

You’ll want to pack enough pyjamas for a clean pair each evening. Spills and leakages can happen at any time.

You may want to change your baby into their pyjamas after your evening meal, so that they can sleep in their pushchair or in the onboard nursery while you enjoy the evening entertainment.

Feeding

Whether you’re breastfeeding, formula feeding, using pureed food or baby-led weaning, you’ll need to make sure that you have everything you need for your baby.

Read more: How to feed your baby on a cruise

Baby Milk

If your baby is used to formula milk, you should bring this with you. You can often buy it on board, and some cruise lines such as P&O Cruises offer it for free, but it might not be the same brand that your baby is used to.

For babies of 12 months and older, you’ll be able to request whole cow’s milk in any bar or restaurant or have it delivered to your stateroom free of charge each day. You can also get plant-based milks like soya, oat or almond on most ships.

baby milk delivery on a cruise

Powdered formula is cheaper and takes up less space, but the ready-to-feed version is more convenient.

I found that taking a mixture of the two worked best. We used powdered formula mixed with boiled water where possible, and also had some ready-to-feed bottles for in the middle of the night or when out on excursions.

Breast Pump

Breastfeeding is welcomed in all public areas on cruise ships. However, if you want your partner to share the feeding duties, or perhaps you fancy having a few drinks one evening, then you may wish to bring your breast pump as well as milk storage bags.

Most cruise cabins have a fridge. If yours doesn’t, or if it isn’t cold enough to store breast milk, you can request to have it stored in a fridge elsewhere on the ship.

Baby Bottles

Bring enough baby bottles for at least 24 hours, and you can wash them in the sink in your cabin once per day.

Sterilising Equipment

If you usually sterilise your baby’s bottles, the easiest way to do this is on a ship is with a collapsible bucket and sterilising tablets. You can soak the bottles overnight so that they’ll be ready for the next day.

If you usually use electric sterilisers, you’ll want to check with your cruise line as they may not be permitted onboard.

Cups, Bowls and Spoons

It’s a good idea to bring your own plastic or bamboo plates and cutlery for your baby or toddler. The bowl and spoons you’ll find on board may be limited to the ceramic and metal varieties.

Plastic Containers

Food containers are essential for transporting snacks. It’s perfectly fine to help yourself to items from the breakfast buffet and store them for your child to eat later on.

If you plan to take snacks off the ship, check if this is allowed in the port you’re visiting.

Read more: Can you take food off a cruise ship?

Baby Food and Snacks

Most cruise ships are able to provide pureed baby food, either in jars or will make it fresh for you. You’ll also find lots of items for baby-led weaning in the buffet, such as fruit, vegetables, boiled eggs, bread and cereal.

It’s a good idea to bring some of your own baby food and snacks as well, which you can use for convenience or when you’re off the ship in the ports.

Bibs

Disposable paper bibs can be great for travel as you can just throw them away. Alternatively, choose the solid plastic bibs at mealtimes and you can wipe them clean with a baby wipe before washing them properly in your cabin sink.

Burp Cloths

You can never have too many muslin cloths. As well as burping, they’re so handy for mopping up spills, covering skin in the sunshine or as a comforter at night.

Table Mat

Some cruisers like to bring a silicon placemat to ensure that the place where your little one puts their food is clean. If the buffet is busy, you can’t guarantee that the table has been wiped after the people before you have used it. You may find this to be more convenient than bringing plastic plates and bowls with you.

Cleaning

Cruise ships are always super clean and your cabin will be cleaned twice per day. Still, you’ll need to think about washing clothes as well as any baby bottles or cups.

Travel Wash Liquid or Liquid Detergent

Some cruise ships have washing machines you can use and others don’t. If your ship doesn’t, you can wash clothes in the sink in your bathroom.

Bringing your own washing tablets for the machine is recommended. You can buy them onboard, but they’re expensive, and you may have to trek all the way to the onboard shop to get them.

laundry tablets

Washing Up Items

When travelling with a baby you won’t be able to avoid the washing up. Dishwashing equipment isn’t provided so be sure to pack washing-up liquid, a sponge and a bottle brush.

Antibacterial Surface Wipes

High chairs will be sterilised by cruise ship staff after each use. Just to be on the same side, I usually carry anti-bac wipes just for the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ve also wiped it yourself!

Hand Sanitiser

There’ll be hand gel provided throughout the ship. It’s still a good idea to bring your own to use when you get back to your cabin or when you’re off the ship on excursions.

Buy one with a keychain attachment so that you don’t have to go rummaging through your bag to find it. You can even get refillable hand sanitiser bracelets, which are a great idea for parents who always have their hands full.

Sleeping

Travel cots are provided for babies on cruises. If yours isn’t there when you arrive in your cabin, just call your stateroom attendant and they will set it up for you.

Sheets and Blankets

Whilst you will be provided with a travel cot for your baby or toddler to sleep in, the bedding provided is often limited to just a sheet. It’s a good idea to bring your own bedding with you.

Blankets often aren’t provided for babies for safety reasons, so you’ll need to bring your own. Baby sleeping bags are a great alternative to traditional blankets. You should also bring a toddler pillow if your little one usually has one at home, as well as their favourite comforter.

Night Light

If you choose an inside cabin, your stateroom will be completely dark at night. To avoid waking everybody up when you use the bathroom or tend to your baby in the night, invest in a plugin nightlight that emits a dim glow.

Changing

You’ll find plenty of baby-changing facilities on board your cruise ship. It’s not always clear where they are, but if you ask at guest services, they may be able to provide you with a map so that you can always find your nearest one.

Nappies/Diapers

Packing enough nappies for a week or more can take up a lot of space in your luggage. When we took a two-week cruise from the UK, we simply put them in a black bin bag and attached a luggage label. If you’re flying and have limits on luggage, you may wish to stock up after you fly but before you embark.

Don’t rely on being able to buy nappies on board your ship. They’re incredibly expensive and don’t always have all the sizes available. If you run out, you can usually buy more when you call at a port.

If you normally use cloth nappies, you’ll probably find it easier to switch to disposables whilst travelling.

Swimming Nappies/Swim Diapers

Many cruise ships do not allow children who aren’t yet toilet trained into the swimming pools and Jacuzzis. However, you should probably still pack swimming nappies. There may be a toddler splash area on board or you may need them for swimming in the sea.

baby splash area

Folding Changing Mat

A fold-up changing mat is a must, whether it’s for changing your baby on the bed in your room or on a changing table in a public toilet. In some countries, baby changing facilities aren’t available as regularly as they are at home, so if you have to change a nappy on a beach, you’ll definitely need the mat.

Baby Wipes

Imagine how many baby wipes you might need, then double it! As you’ll know, these can be used for cleaning hands, faces and everything else as well as bottoms, making them one of the handiest and most versatile items of baby stuff to pack for a cruise.

Nappy/Diaper Disposal Bags

The bin in your cabin will be emptied twice per day. However, it’s still a very good idea to bring some scented nappy bags to keep the smell of waste contained.

Toiletries

As well as packing your own toiletries bag, it’s handy to have a separate bag with everything that you need to keep your baby clean and healthy.

Baby Wash, Shampoo and Sponge

Whilst shower gel and shampoo will be provided, it’s often not the best for baby’s delicate skin so you’ll probably want to bring your own toiletries from home.

Sun Cream

Baby sun protection with SPF 50+ is essential. Yes, you can buy sunscreen onboard, but it’s going to be expensive and options may be limited, so bring your own.

Baby Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Don’t forget your baby’s toothbrush! And the same brand of toothpaste that they’re used to at home.

First Aid Kit and Medicines

There will be a fully-stocked pharmacy on your ship, but it won’t be cheap and is unlikely to be open around the clock. Be sure to pack a small bag with infant paracetamol, nappy rash cream, teething gel, a thermometer and anything else which you use at home.

Everyday Items

Here are some more miscellaneous things to add to your baby cruise packing list…

Comfort Items

Some babies have dummies or pacifiers, some have muslin cloths, blankets or a favourite toy. Whatever your baby uses to soothe themselves at home, you’ll want to bring several of them on your cruise.

Toys

I’d recommend bringing a couple of favourite toys and a few new ones. Stacking cups, a book and something to stick on the tabletop are good travel toys to add to your list.

Inflatable Baby Pool

Your own baby pool can be a good place for your baby to cool off on a hot day. Not all ships allow them, so check before you pack it.

Most cruise cabins only have showers rather than bathtubs so another use for a baby pool is to create a baby bath in the bottom of your shower cubicle. Failing that, the lid of a Pringles tube placed over the drain can function as a plug to enable you to fill the shower tray with a couple of inches of water.

Baby Swim Ring

If your ship allows babies to use the pools, then it’s worth bringing a baby swim seat, ring or armbands.

We cruised on P&O Cruises’ Britannia and kids were allowed in the Beachcomber pool with swimming nappies. However, the pool was at least six-feet deep all over, so some kind of baby floatation device would be essential.

Spray Bottle

If there are no swimming or splashing areas for babies on your cruise, it’s a good idea to have some other way of cooling them off on a hot day. Filling a spray bottle with water can be one solution to this dilemma.

Things to Leave at Home – Don’t Bring These!

Travel Cot/Pack and Play

A travel cot will be provided for you so there’s no need to bring your own.

High Chair

High chairs are always available in every dining venue on the ship.

Baby Bath

Some cruise ships, such as P&O Cruises’ family-friendly ships, provide baby baths on request. Even if yours doesn’t, a baby bath is such a bulky item that you’re better off not bringing it. Instead, you can wash your baby in the sink or in the shower.

Side-by-Side Pushchair

If you have twins or a baby and a toddler, don’t be tempted to bring a side-by-side double pushchair. I saw a family do this and it was awful for them as it was too wide for the corridor leading to their room so they had to fold it up and carry both babies every day.

We’ve used a double pushchair with one in front of the other on a cruise ship and it was okay, but it took up a lot of room in the lift and was a bit tricky to manoeuvre around tight corners.

We’ve also used two single pushchairs for our baby and toddler and this was the best idea. As we only owned one single pushchair, we borrowed one from onboard the ship, which is a good option if you’re cruising with MSC Cruises.

Packing for your Family Cruise

Before you go ahead and pack, it’s worth researching what’s already provided for you on the ship. Free-to-hire baby equipment will vary depending on whether you’re cruising with P&O Cruises, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises or some other cruise line.

Once you know what you need, I’d recommend starting to pack quite early. Packing for a cruise with a baby or toddler can be a tough job, so you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to avoid getting stressed out and overpacking.

Carnival Explains Why Cruise is Adult-Only. Heald Reiterates ‘We Are a Proud Family Cruise Line’

No, Carnival Cruise Line is not making a pivot to adult-only cruises.  Recent news about specific sailings on Carnival Magic not allowing children on board have sparked rumors that the family cruise line is shifting gears.

Carnival’s Brand Ambassador has emphatically stated this morning in a social media post that it’s simply not true.

Carnival Magic cruise ship

John Heald, Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, wants to make it crystal clear: Carnival is, and always will be, a proud family cruise line.

Heald recently spoke out to tackle rumors buzzing around online. He explained that part of his job is to “respectfully correct” cruise news outlets when they say things that are not true.

“One of those… is that we are moving to become, quote, an adult-only cruise line. Please ignore that. We are a proud family cruise line. We have been, and I’m sure we always will be.”

Why the Confusion? The “Adults-Only” Cruise Explained

So, why did this rumor even start? It’s all because of a couple of specific cruises on Carnival Magic in November 2025. One of these, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean sailing, was indeed changed to an “adults-only” trip.

Heald clarified that these are special Casino Event cruises, tied to Carnival’s Players Club program. And here’s the key Heald stated:

“Because they are casino offers, we cannot make those casino offers to children, which is why these cruises are for adults only because they are casino based offered cruises. And they are very popular.”

Since casinos are for adults, these specific cruises must be as well.

It’s About Dry Dock, Not a New Direction

Heald also explained why these special casino cruises popped up. “I’ve said this before so this all is because we moved Carnival Magic’s dry dock and the casino have taken a couple of cruises and made them adults only,” he said.

Carnival Magic‘s planned maintenance was rescheduled, opening up these dates, and Carnival decided to use them for these unique casino-focused voyages.

See Carnival’s up-to-date dry dock schedule here.

Not a Test Run for More Adults-Only Cruises

This is not Carnival testing the waters for more adults-only cruises. Heald was clear:

“I don’t know what the future is going to hold, but let me just tell you we are not moving to an adult only cruise line now. This is not something that you should be concerned about.”

He highlighted that while some people like the idea of adults-only cruises, many more don’t. “For every one person who says ‘I would love an adults-only cruise,’ there are many who have written and said, ‘what do I do with my children, my grandchildren?‘”

He called these “cruise specific situations” and urged people to “please ignore what some people have been highlighting.”

What This Means for Those Specific Sailings

On these particular adults-only cruises, you won’t find the usual kid-friendly spots like Camp Ocean or Club O2 active. While most other ship offerings will still be there, the vibe will definitely be different without kids around.

The Clear Message: Carnival is for Families

So, let’s be clear: the “adults-only” talk is about a handful of special, casino-driven cruises. It’s not a sign that Carnival is changing its overall approach. As John Heald emphasized, “Know we are a proud family cruise line.”

MSC Cruises to Offer Sports Betting on 8 Ships for Trial Period in 2025

MSC Cruises has announced a new partnership with gaming technology provider Playtech to bring retail sports betting to select cruise ships. This new option will be available for guests sailing in international waters.

MSC Bellissima in Barcelona Spain

The agreement begins with a trial in 2025. During this time, sports betting will be available on eight MSC Cruises ships, covering 284 voyages.

If this initial trial is successful, MSC Cruises plans to roll out the offering across its entire fleet of 23 vessels. This new service means that passengers will be able to place bets on the initial eight vessels which have not yet been named.  This type of betting has not offered by MSC before.

Mara Friso, Head of Casino at MSC Cruises, shared her excitement in a statement:

“We’re very proud to be able to deliver the excitement and engagement of sports gaming to our guests through our partnership with Playtech. Our fleet of modern cruise ships will provide our customers a wide array of immersive digital content as a complement to our state-of-the-art cruise casinos.”

Yori Arami, Playtech’s Vice President of Sports Commercial, noted that MSC Cruises is already a long-time customer for their casino system, making them the “perfect partner” to expand sports betting globally.

Playtech is a major name in the gaming technology world, known for developing software for online casinos, sports betting platforms, and various other gambling products for operators worldwide.

The Partnership’s History

Playtech has supplied its “Neon” casino management system to MSC Cruises since 2014. This existing relationship handles the management of casino operations like slots and table games.

The specific names of the eight ships involved in the 2025 trial have not yet been publicly disclosed.

The Pros & Cons Of Ultra-Luxury Cruising With Silversea

Let’s be honest right from the start – if you’re looking at cruises from Silversea, you either don’t know much about the brand, or you have the money to treat yourself to a really special kind of vacation – that, or you like to dream.

Silversea Cruises is not a cruise line for the mainstream. It is very much a luxury cruise brand, reflected in its incredible food, beautiful ships, stellar service, and price.

Silver Shadow at sea

But even beyond the price, there are some downsides to such a fantastic cruise line… First, though, the reasons that justify the cost.

Silversea Cruises Advantages

Here’s a list of the main ‘pros’ of Silversea, and why you should consider them for your next cruise.

1. All-Inclusive Cruising (Almost)

With Silversea, almost everything is included in your fare – more so than almost every other cruise line sailing (the only major cruise line that is similar would be Regent Seven Seas, another ultra-luxury option).

However, there are different fare options. Door-to-Door includes your flights and chauffeur transfers (more on that below), while Port-to-Port is just for the cruise element. And then the newest fare option is Essential, which removes the shore excursions for added flexibility, but only on some cruises.

When you book a cruise with Silversea, you really don’t have to pay anything extra:

  • Flights – Your flights are all included in your fare, with Business-class upgrades where possible, if you choose a Door-to-Door fare
  • Hotel – If your flights get you into your embarkation port a day early, or if you can’t fly out on disembarkation day, your pre- or post-cruise hotel stays are included
  • Gratuities – All of your tips and gratuities are covered in your fare
  • Excursions – You get at least one free shore excursion in every port you visit, unless you’ve chosen the Essential cruise fare
  • Food – Your dining in the main dining room is included
  • Drinks – All drinks are free onboard, including alcoholic beverages. You’ll even enjoy free Champagne!
  • WiFi – Internet access is included

There are a few things you may want to pay for, but they’re always completely optional.

2. Private Transfers Included

Your luxury cruise with Silversea doesn’t begin when you get to the ship. It starts much earlier – from the second you step out of your home.

That’s because another included feature on the Door-to-Door fares is executive private transfers. You don’t need to arrange your own taxi to take you to the airport, it’ll all be done for you – in a stylish luxury car too.

It’s one less thing to worry about, and it means you can start to enjoy that VIP treatment the second that your holiday starts.

3. Stunning Service

Silversea ships are all-suite, and as part of that, it means every single room has a butler offering white-glove service. They are available round-the-clock for anything you need, whether that’s unpacking your suitcases for you, shining your shoes, or just making sure your minibar is stocked with all your favourites.

Silversea butler

It’s not just the butlers that are a beacon of excellent service, though – every crew member that you meet is trained to the very highest standards. Everywhere you go on the ship, you’ll be greeted warmly by the most dedicated and helpful staff you could hope to meet. Nothing is ever too much trouble.

4. Gourmet-Quality Dining

Every restaurant on Silversea offers truly stunning gourmet-quality dining. The Restaurant is the main dining room, with a vibrant and ever-changing menu that will often reflect the local dishes of the destinations you visit.

But the ships have other restaurants on board too, including specialist Italian fare, Japanese and Indochine cuisines, fine French options and succulent steak and seafood fare.

No matter how adventurous (or not) your palate, you will delight in sumptuous food throughout your entire cruise.

5. Absolute Enrichment Onboard and Ashore

It’s worth reiterating that you get one included shore excursion in every port that you visit, meaning you get the chance to sample the local culture and major attractions without having to pay a penny extra.

But these are not excursions that are just thrown together. Each one is tailored to truly highlight the best features of every port, where possible.

It doesn’t mean you’ll see everything, because there’s often so much to do that it wouldn’t be possible. But you will get a fantastic insight into each destination.

This insight is only strengthened by the expert lecturers on the ship, offering extensive talks on every destination you’re sailing to. These free lectures are the perfect way to brush up on your next port of call before you visit, and broaden your horizons.

6. Smaller Ships

Silversea’s fleet of cruise ships does not include the gigantic behemoths of the more mainstream cruise lines.

Indeed, the largest ships in the fleet are Silver Nova and Silver Ray, both of which have a gross tonnage of 50,051 – that’s around a fifth of the size of the biggest cruise ship in the world, Icon of the Seas.

And that’s absolutely by design. Smaller ships mean more intimate service from the crew and a more relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. It also means that the ships are capable of exploring ports that larger ships simply can’t get to.

And that’s before you consider the specialist Expedition ships, which are smaller again and are built for the most hard-to-reach places in the world, such as the Antarctic.

7. Choice of Destinations

It’s not just about being able to reach destinations off the beaten track – Silversea also excels in sailing to destinations all over the globe.

While some other cruise lines will primarily stick to sailings in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, Silversea offers a huge amount of choice across Europe, all of North America and South America, Australia and New Zealand, Asia and both polar regions.

There are also some truly stunning Grand Voyages and World Cruises, if you’re lucky enough to have time to see more of the world in one holiday.

Silversea Cruises Disadvantages

Now let’s look at some of the ‘cons’ of Silversea that may put you off.

1. High Cruise Fares

You knew this was coming.

Understandably, when you’re sailing with an ultra-luxury cruise line that is almost all-inclusive, the cruise fares for Silversea are pretty high in comparison to other cruise lines.

Whereas a 9-night cruise around Europe with Royal Caribbean will likely start at around £1,300 ($1,500) per person, expect Silversea Cruises prices per person to start at around £6,000 ($6,900).

Of course, that Royal Caribbean fare won’t include the same features as the Silversea one, and that is for the lowest price stateroom in each – which with Silversea will be a suite. A Royal Caribbean suite would of course be much more expensive than £1,300 per person.

It comes down to your own personal budget, but for many people, the high Silversea prices are not unjustifiable – they are actually great ‘value’ for the quality of service you get, and for everything that is included.

2. Some Restaurants Aren’t Included

Unfortunately, not everything is included in your Silversea cruise, despite the marketing which describes them as being ‘all-inclusive’.

One of the main things you’ll need to pay extra for is dining in some of the speciality restaurants, which can cost around $60 per person.

That’s not extremely expensive for a gourmet-quality meal, but you might just prefer to stick to the main dining room, since it’s included in your fare and the food is still exceptional. It’s your choice again, but if you do want more variety and more specialist cuisines then be prepared to pay extra.

La Dame on Silver Nova

3. Not Well Suited to Families

Is this really a disadvantage? It depends on your own travelling party. But Silversea cruises are not really suited to families. They are not ‘adults-only’ but they don’t have any features on the ships really tailored to younger guests.

This might be something you see as an actual benefit, if you want a quieter cruise. There’s a very low chance that there will be any children or teenagers on board your cruise. But if you do have a family, be prepared for the fact that your kids may not enjoy the time spent at sea.

If you want a cruise that’s more upmarket but is accommodating to children too, consider premium cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises instead. Or a family-friendly cruise line such as MSC, with a premium area like the Yacht Club.

Carnival 2026 Sailings Canceled After Dry Dock Update

After months of planning, no one likes to hear that their cruise has to be canceled, but cruise ships need regular maintenance, and sometimes scheduling conflicts are necessary.

Carnival Cruise Line recently sent out notifications to guests booked on seven specific sailings from January 5, 2026, through January 26, 2026. The reason? Carnival Conquest’s scheduled dry dock has been moved.

The email sent to impacted guests read as follows:

“We have had to reschedule Carnival Conquest’s dry dock to January 2026, and we are sorry to inform you that the above cruises, including yours, have been canceled.”

Carnival hasn’t yet given a detailed reason for moving the dates for the ship’s dry dock. These changes usually happen because of things like shipyard availability, getting the right parts on time, or other operational issues that are outside the cruise line’s direct control.

Carnival Conquest was the first Conquest-class ship with the cruise line, and it debuted in November, 2002.  The ship’s last dry dock was in 2022, during which it received basic maintenance in addition to the blue hull livery that was rolled out across the fleet.

If Your Cruise Was Canceled, Here Are Your Choices:

The impacted sailings were 3- and 4-night cruises out of PortMiami.  Carnival is offering several options to those whose cruises were canceled:

  • Rebook a Different Cruise: Guests can choose to book a different cruise. It can be on another Carnival ship, and it needs to be a similar sailing duration to the original booking. If you rebook, Carnival will give you a $50 onboard credit per person (up to $100 per stateroom) for your new cruise.
  • Get Help with Flight Changes: If you had non-refundable flights booked, Carnival might help cover some of the change fees. They will reimburse up to $200 per person for these fees. You’ll need to submit documentation for those changes.
  • Receive a Full Refund: If you’d prefer not to rebook, you can get a full refund for your cruise fare and any other items you pre-purchased for the trip. These refunds will start being processed after June 10, 2025.

Why the Date Change?

You might have seen some dry dock schedules for Carnival that showed Carnival Conquest’s dry dock happening in August and September of 2025. It’s important to know that the January 2026 dates are the new schedule.

We will have to keep our eyes open to see what Carnival does with the old dry dock dates for Conquest and what kind of sailings may be opened up in the near future.

This kind of dry dock rescheduling has also happened recently with other Carnival ships, like Carnival Magic and Carnival Horizon.

Recent news about some Carnival Magic sailings being adult-only now after a dry dock change have led to speculation about more offerings like this from the cruise line.  Brand Ambassador, John Heald shut down rumors that Carnival is moving away from its family-friendly focus after news of the Casino Event on the ship forced the cruise line to remove children from the upcoming cruise.

Some are already wondering if the new gap in Carnival Conquest’s schedule will allow for more specialty type cruises like this, but for now we will have to wait for official word.

Cruisers Reveal Why They Missed Their Ship and What Happened Next

There’s something beautiful about a cruise ship sailing off into the distance–unless you’re supposed to be on it.   In a recent social media post, cruise passengers who were left behind from their cruise ship revealed the cause and what happened next.

Celebrity Equinox sailing from Port Canaveral Ocean

Missing the cruise ship is one of the biggest fears cruise passengers have, and even though it’s almost always 100% preventable, it’s better to learn from other’s mistakes than to make them yourself.

A recent Reddit thread titled “Who missed their cruise?”, revealed some common reasons people were left behind, revealing the real-life consequences of being left at the pier or terminal.

While “flying in the day of” might seem like a common factor, the stories shared in the post offer valuable lessons for any future cruiser wanting to avoid having this kind of story to tell.

Why Ships Don’t Wait

Unlike a delayed flight where you might get rebooked, a cruise ship operates on a strict schedule. They have port reservations, tight itineraries, and thousands of other passengers to consider.

And let’s be honest, if cruise ships always waited until everyone was back on board, it’s unlikely the ships would ever make it to the scheduled destinations on time, never mind making it back to homeport at the time scheduled.

Some captains will make the call to wait 20-45 minutes in some cases, but don’t rely on this when planning an excursion.

Airport Issues Leading to Close Calls

Flight cancellations, mechanical issues, and unforeseen delays were the most common culprits.  This is why we recommend flying in at least one day before, but when weather is a factor two days ahead of time may be warranted.

  • One Redditor recounted a really close call: “Jetblue cancels the flight mere hours before we were supposed to leave… Flight gets delayed almost 2 hours. By the time we made it to the port it was around 12:30pm with the boarding cutoff being 2pm. Extremely stressful- to the point where one of my family members fainted at the port of Tampa.”
  • Euphoric-Ad2210 shared a similar experience: “We missed embarkation in Seattle for our Alaska cruise thanks to Crowdstrike. We were flying in the day before but our flight was cancelled. Moved to an early morning flight the next day that would have gotten there in time but that cancelled too.” They added, “Because everything was so backed up at that point Delta didn’t have anything til 3 days later.”
  • And sometimes it’s a mechanical issue causing delays, as another comment stated: “Land and next plane has a mechanical issue… It was getting to the point where we had to make a decision to rent a car and drive to Florida straight through or charter a jet… As we were debating, plane was finally fixed and cleared to fly but it was very close.”

Passport and Document Issues

Expired documents or unexpected travel snags can also shatter those cruise plans.

  • zorasorabee told a story of a mother-daughter trip that turned solo: “My mom and I had a mother daughter cruise to Alaska planned. She waited until the last moment to look for her documentation. Expired passport card… She got sent home and I ended up on my first solo vacation.“
  • StockFact1124 faced a nightmare shuttle ride: “The shuttle from the ship back to the hotel was under 20 minutes. The day of embarkation the shuttle took 2.5 hours. People were getting out of cars and carrying luggage. It was a nightmare.”

Medical & Family Emergencies

There’s a reason we also recommend cruise travel insurance for every single cruise. No one plans on having a medical emergency.  It just happens.  And sometimes it happens before the cruise even starts.

  • FalynT mentioned a friend who couldn’t come because of “a death in her family. She got refunded port fees and taxes. And what she prepaid for the internet package and drink package. But had to eat the cost of the room.“
  • Sea_Voice_404: “My parents missed a cruise since my dad ended up in the hospital the day before (full refund with insurance).”

Looking at the Wrong Time

Cruise ships will constantly remind passengers to stay on ship time when in a port of call.  Often there is a one or even two-hour difference.  And if you rely on your cell phone, you’re going to end up in trouble since it will often defer to the local time.

We’ve written many stories about cruisers being left behind because they relied on their phones for the time or even one instance when passengers relied on the clock in their rented Jeep.

Of course, if you plan on being back on the ship well before all aboard time then you’re better off anyway.

Financial Fallout & Catching Up

  • You’re On Your Own: Unless you have specific travel insurance or cruise line packages, you’re responsible for getting yourself to the next port in most cases.
  • Limited Refunds: For those who miss embarkation, the financial hit is a pretty big deal. As one noted, “You get taxes and port fees back but it doesn’t add up to much.  Another claimed, “It is ENTIRELY based on what promo code / deal you used… Nobody will know unless you read your terms of the contract.“
  • Catching Up is Possible (Sometimes): As brokentr0jan mentioned, “I know someone that missed their cruise and just got on in St Thomas. Flight got delayed and the airline just sent them to St Thomas.” Another cruiser was able to fly into Sitka for their Alaska cruise, saying, “We called NCL and got permission to fly into the first port… They said it was allowed because the port was in the US and the ship had not stopped in a foreign country yet.”
  • Passports on the ship: If you do get left behind at a foreign port of call, you will need your passports and travel documents.  If these were left in the cabin safe, the cruise line can retrieve them and send copies to the port.  This is why I often keep a copy of my own passport on me when traveling abroad.

Prioritize Pre-Cruise Travel & Documents

  • Fly in Early: This is the golden rule. As a previous Reddit user said, “Went on another cruise this year and we did not make the same mistake. Flew down to Florida the day before… You just never know with airlines.”
  • Double-Check All Documents: As seaofgreatnesss wisely concludes, “Sooo lesson learned, triple check passport before leaving the home and the day prior.”
  • Factor in Travel Time: Don’t underestimate delays. Majestic-Height-2490 almost missed a cruise due to immigration, arriving “at 4:05pm, was amongst last 10 people boarding.”

Consider Financial Safeguards

  • Travel Insurance: This can be a lifesaver. silvermanedwino bluntly stated, “Never. Unless you have insurance, you get nada.” Sea_Voice_404 also noted, “My parents missed a cruise since my dad ended up in the hospital the day before (full refund with insurance).“
  • Cruise Line Air & Transfers: While pricier, booking through the cruise line can offer extra protection. EpiZirco highlighted this benefit with Viking: “We cruise Viking in Europe and let them take care of the travel booking… Had we booked our flights ourselves, we would have had a lot more stress.”

Bottom Line

Sometimes people miss their ship simply because they lose track of time and underestimate how long it takes to get back to the ship.  One helpful tip is that if you’re going to go far from the port, do this first and keep the activities close to the port for the end of the day.

If you do miss your ship, it’s not the end of the world.  Besides the cost of getting to the next port to meet up with the ship again, having some travel documents on hand can make this a whole lot easier.

Alaska Cruise Port Sued Over New Tax on Excursions

It seems like cruise ports in Alaska keep clashing with the cruise industry lately, as yet another legal battle unfolds.   Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has filed a lawsuit against Skagway, Alaska over an additional cost added to shore excursions.

Skagway Getting More Tax Money from Tours

For a long time, Skagway would charge a local sales tax on tours that started and ended right there in town.

But there was a key detail: this tax didn’t include the commission fees that cruise lines often add to the tour price. These fees are what the cruise lines get for organizing and making it easy for you to book these excursions right through the company.

Well, that’s changed. Late last year, Skagway decided to squeeze a little more money out of cruise passengers. They passed a new rule saying they want to collect sales tax on the entire amount you pay for a tour, including those commission fees.

Skagway officials say their goal is just to tax all tours consistently, no matter if you book them in town, online, or from somewhere else. They are saying they are treating cruise line shore excursions just like any other local business.

Cruise Industry Experts Say It’s Illegal

CLIA, however, sees this very differently. They’re arguing that Skagway’s new tax rule breaks both Alaska state law and even the U.S. Constitution. They’ve filed a lawsuit against Skagway’s borough manager and treasurer earlier this month, basically saying the town has gone too far.

The cruise industry’s main arguments are:

  • No Real Connection: One of their biggest points is that local taxes are supposed to be for things that have a “substantial relationship” to that community. So, if you’re, say, a tourist outside the U.S. booking a Skagway kayaking tour online, CLIA argues that Skagway shouldn’t be able to tax the commission fee on that sale. The booking and the service of arranging it didn’t actually happen in Skagway.  According to KHNS, a tax attorney not involved in the case put it simply in saying that taxing that small amount a cruise line makes from arrangements made elsewhere is “problematic.”
  • Interfering with National Business: The U.S. Constitution also has rules about local taxes not getting in the way of business that happens across state lines. The cruise industry feels that taxing transactions involving multiple places, or even ships moving between different ports, could violate these rules.
  • Risk of “Double Taxation”: CLIA has stated that this new rule could lead to “double taxation and placing undue financial strain on cruise guests and Alaska businesses alike.” They’re concerned this will just add extra costs that passengers and local businesses will end up paying.

Skagway Stands Firm

Despite the lawsuit, Skagway is not budging. They say they’re just trying to modernize their tax collection for tours. Some local residents point out that the cruise industry, which brings over 1.2 million passengers to Skagway each year, should be contributing more to their small community.

But it’s a careful balance.  Local businesses want to benefit from cruise ship tourism while still maintaining a vibrant local community.   And then there are some who are worried about deterring cruise ships in the first place.

A recent plan to limit cruise ships in Juneau Alaska has failed to reach the ballot, but these efforts seem to keep coming back.

What’s Next for This Tax Battle?

CLIA’s lawsuit is asking the court to strike down this new tax rule and also wants Skagway to pay their legal fees. This isn’t just a small local issue; the outcome could really impact how cruise excursions are taxed in other port towns around the world, but especially in Alaska.

Carnival Starts Issuing Bans To Alcohol Smugglers

Carnival, one of the biggest cruise lines in the world, has started cracking down on guests who smuggle alcohol onboard ships by issuing lifetime bans.

Carnival drinks ban

Copies of letters sent to guests have started to circulate social media, which explain to guests that they are being banned after sneaking alcohol onboard and then sharing their stories on social media.

The move comes after the cruise line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, shared an update in April 2025 stating that the cruise line did monitor social media and would ban guests who flouted the rules.

One noted name is TikToker Courtney Murley, who shared videos of her cruise in March where she had snuck alcohol onto the ship.

However she’s now shared a follow-up TikTok with her ban letter.

Language warning:

@courtneynicolemurley Thank goodness we love MSC & Royal better 🛳️ 🌴 I’m still laughing about this since it was all for the views and not real at all 😂 oh well def was great for my engagement so hey whatever, still love ya carnival 💁🏼‍♀️ @carnival @Royal Caribbean @MSC Cruises US #greenscreen #carnival #carnivalcruise #carnivalconquest #msccruises #royalcaribbean #royalcarribeancruise #bahamas #smuggler #pirate ♬ Hit Me – Megan Hilty & Christopher Sieber & Jennifer Simard

It’s clear that Carnival doesn’t want guests to promote the option to smuggle drinks onboard, since it could reduce the number of people willing to sign up to a drinks package.

In the comments of her original video, and a follow up letter, Courtney now claims that she never actually took alcohol onto her cruise, and that her original video was satirical.

She even suggests she may seek advice from a lawyer, despite claiming she doesn’t care that she is banned.

@courtneynicolemurley Replying to @Ashley yall please tag an attorney that can help me. Internet do your thing! Thank you 💕🫶🏻✨🛳️ #cruisegate #fyp #cruise #attorney #falseallegations #carnival #cruisetok ♬ NO SOUND – Sok Baraby

I doubt that anyone who sneaks alcohol onto a cruise but is caught at embarkation would be banned for life. Usually cruise lines will confiscate it, give the cruisers a mild ticking off at worst, and send them on their way.

It seems like Carnival really has a problem with guests who flout the rules and post on social media about their smuggling successes.

“This letter is to inform you that you will not be able to sail onboard any Carnival Cruise Line vessel in the future due to the smuggling of alcohol onboard the Carnival Conquest on March 31st, 2025, and subsequently posting about it on social media platforms.”

Letter sent by Carnival to Courtney Murley in May 2025

Of course, it’s not just boasting that they’ve beat the rules, but also potentially showing other guests how they could do the same – and that’s likely what Carnival is unhappy over.

Still, who knows? Maybe this is part of a serious crackdown and anyone using rum runners or other methods to sneak booze onto the ship might find themselves facing a ban.

Carnival already permits guests to bring one bottle of wine onboard their cruise, along with 12 x 330ml cans or cartons of soft drinks.

That’s not too dissimilar to other cruise lines:

Cruise Line Alcohol allowance per passenger Non-alcoholic drinks allowance per passenger
Carnival One bottle of wine 12 x 330ml cans or cartons
Celebrity Two bottles of wine No limit
Costa Not allowed Water only permitted for medical needs
Cunard One bottle of wine No limit
Disney Two bottles of wine or six beers No limit
MSC Cruises Not allowed Water only permitted for medical needs
NCL Unlimited wine – $15 fee per bottle Water only permitted for medical needs
P&O Cruises One litre of wine or Champagne No limit
Princess Cruises One bottle of wine for free.
$15 per additional bottle
No limit
Royal Caribbean One bottle of wine 12 x 500ml bottles, cans or cartons (per stateroom)

With the cruise line now starting to issue bans to guests who break the rules, you’ll definitely want to think twice about any plans to sneak your own alcohol onboard above the limit.

And if you do, definitely don’t post about it on social media – they are watching!

Exciting New Bonus Cruise For Highly Anticipated Ship!

Star of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s next Icon-class mega-ship, is so ready to welcome guests that she’s launching even earlier than expected – again!

Star of the Seas

Fresh off her sea trials with top marks (where she soared through in record time), the cruise line has now announced a fourth showcase cruise ahead of the ship’s official maiden voyage.

The new 4-night sailing will depart Port Canaveral, Florida on 16th August 2025, calling at the line’s private Bahamian destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay, on 17th August.

“We simply can’t wait to debut the world’s best family vacation,” Royal Caribbean said in an announcement, adding that this special sailing marks the official kick-off of the inaugural season.

During the port call, Star of the Seas will share CocoCay with her soon-to-be predecessor, Utopia of the Seas.

With both ships at Royal Caribbean’s signature destination, it will be an especially exciting day for cruise fans and an impressive double-ship photo opportunity.

The rest of the itinerary will feature two full sea days, giving guests time to explore the vast array of entertainment, attractions, and dining across the seven unique neighbourhoods on board.

Of course, with the sheer number of things to do onboard the ship, two days will likely only be enough for guests to scratch the surface.

More Sailings Added, Maiden Voyage Still to Come

This new sailing is the latest of four showcase cruises to be slotted in before the ship’s long-awaited 7-night Western Caribbean inaugural sailing on 31th August 2025.

Passengers originally booked on the 20th August sailing – previously the earliest – are now being offered the chance to move their reservation forward and become part of this even earlier debut.

The showcase cruises were made possible thanks to the record-speed completion of sea trials, which confirmed that Star of the Seas is not only seaworthy but ahead of schedule in terms of operational readiness.

Showcase Cruises: A First Look With Some Caveats

While showcase cruises offer early access and exclusive commemorative gifts, guests should note that not every element may be fully operational just yet.

Some entertainment programming, specialty venues, or staffing levels could still be in a ramp-up phase.

That said, the excitement of being one of the first guests aboard a brand new Icon-class ship will more than make up for any minor hiccups.

It’s worth remembering that Star of the Seas had originally been scheduled to launch on 17th August 2025.

That date was cancelled last year due to anticipated construction delays – but with rapid progress, Royal Caribbean has since re-added multiple early cruises.

Star of the Seas will be the second ship in Royal Caribbean’s Icon class, following Icon of the Seas, which debuted to global fanfare.

She will be one of the largest and most advanced ships in the world, with cutting-edge entertainment, waterparks, family zones, and a dedicated suite neighbourhood.

Following her preview sailings, Star will settle into year-round 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries out of Port Canaveral, calling at ports like Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, and St. Thomas, as well as CocoCay.

In 2026 a third Icon-class ship will launch, named Legend of the Seas. Her sailings – including an inaugural season in the Mediterranean – are already on sale.

For those eager to get on board, time is of the essence – early sailings, especially these special showcase ones, tend to sell out quickly.

Cruise Guest Wins €9,000 After Alleged Urination Incident Ends Holiday Early

In a bizarre legal twist, a cruise passenger has been awarded €9,000 after being ejected from a sailing over an incident involving a glass of urine – a case that has sparked debate about cruise ship conduct, crew welfare, and contract law.

Beer on a cruise ship

According to court proceedings in Düsseldorf, Germany, the unnamed man had been enjoying drinks at an onboard bar with two travel companions when the alleged misbehaviour occurred.

Witnesses claimed the man urinated into a glass and left it on the table.

Later, a crew member reported discovering the glass and noted a strong smell of urine. But the ship took no immediate action.

It wasn’t until three days later, at a port of call, that the man and his two fellow travellers were prevented from reboarding the vessel. The cruise line told them to arrange their own transport home.

Guests Removed Without Warning

Crucially, only one member of the group was alleged to have misbehaved, yet all three were expelled. There was no formal notice, hearing, or opportunity to respond to the accusation prior to their removal.

The man denied the incident entirely and decided to take the cruise line to court, claiming that his contractual rights as a paying guest had been violated.

The Düsseldorf court ultimately sided with the passenger, finding that:

  • The cruise line’s guest conduct policy only permitted removal for violent, abusive, or discriminatory behaviour
  • The urination incident, while undeniably unpleasant and inappropriate, did not meet the contractual threshold for removal
  • No official warning or due process was given before the guests were barred from returning

The cruise line was ordered to:

  • Refund the cost of the cruise for the missed days
  • Reimburse travel costs incurred for flights and taxis
  • Compensate the man’s companions, as he had booked on their behalf

In total, the court awarded €9,000 (approximately £7,500/$10,000).

Was the Cruise Line Wrong? Public Opinion Is Divided

While the man won the legal case, cruise enthusiasts and hospitality workers have expressed frustration over the outcome.

Many commenters argued that forcing a crew member to handle bodily fluids should be considered abusive behaviour, even if it doesn’t involve physical violence.

“Expecting the crew to clean up your bodily fluids is abusive. That’s a health risk and completely unacceptable.”

“He might have escaped legal punishment, but this is absolutely grounds for being banned for life from the cruise line.”

Cruisers react on social media

Lessons for Cruise Travellers and Cruise Lines

This ruling highlights how important precise wording in guest contracts can be – and how delays in enforcement or procedural missteps can lead to unintended legal consequences.

For cruise lines:

  • Clear, consistent protocols are essential when addressing guest misconduct
  • Immediate action and documentation help to avoid future disputes

For guests:

  • Behaving respectfully and within social norms is not optional
  • Even if consequences aren’t immediate, cruise lines are watching

In this case, it appears the accused passenger may have avoided consequences not because he was innocent – but because the letter of the contract didn’t support the cruise line’s enforcement actions.

Whether or not justice was truly served remains a topic of debate.
