Everything You Need To Know About Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises is one of the more unique cruise lines in the world, since it features (some) ships with actual sails. It’s also one of the smaller cruise lines, with just six ships in the fleet, offering a luxurious experience for those passengers onboard.

One of Wind star cruise's deck

But who owns the company – are they part of a large cruise corporation? And what’s the cruise line’s history? Let’s take a look.

Windstar Cruises Base

Windstar Cruises is based in the US – specifically in Miami, Florida. The headquarters is situated at 8400 NW 36th Street, Suite 520, Doral, FL 33166. Despite being based a short distance from the Miami cruise port, the ships don’t tend to offer cruises from Florida.

MAP OF FLORIDA

Windstar used to have a head office in Seattle, Washington. That has since closed, by many of the team still continue to work remotely from Washington.

The History of Windstar Cruises

Windstar was first formed as Windstar Sail Cruises in 1984 by Karl G. Andren, an entrepreneur in the shipping industry who sadly passed away in February 2023.

Karl G. Andren
Karl G. Andren

The first ship was the Wind Star, which joined the fleet in 1986. The following two years saw identical sister ships launch – firstly the Wind Song, followed by the Wind Spirit.

Two of wind star cruise ships
  • 1984: Windstar Cruises was founded by Karl G. Andren, a pioneering entrepreneur who wanted to create a unique sailing experience for travellers.
  • 1986: The first ship, Wind Star, began its maiden voyage.
  • 1988: Holland America Line, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, acquired Windstar Cruises.
  • 2007: Windstar Cruises was sold to Ambassadors International for about $100 million.
  • 2011: Following the bankruptcy of Ambassadors International, Windstar was bought by Anschutz Corporation, owned by Philip Anschutz, and operated through one of its subsidiaries, Xanterra Parks & Resorts.

The Ownership Of The Wind Star Cruises Fleet

In 1987, Holland America Line purchased 50% of Windstar Cruises, and then bought the remainder of the company the following year in 1988. However, Holland America no longer owns Windstar Cruises.

Cruise mummy with Holland America Line

Holland America Line took over before the Wind Surf and Wind Saga were completed, and the company decided to pass on the ships, no longer adding them to the fleet. Instead, Club Med bought the ships and christened them Club Med I and Club Med II.

Windstar Cruises And Carnival Corporation & PLC

Carnival Corporation & PLC did own Windstar Cruises from 1989, when the company bought Holland America Line and its subsidiaries.

One of the ships of carnival cruises

Carnival owned Windstar until 2007, when it sold the cruise line to Ambassadors International. It was later sold again to Xanterra Travel Collection in 2011.

In 1998, Carnival planned to purchase the Club Med I and Club Med II ships to add to the Windstar fleet – the company had first refusal on the ships as part of the original deal to pass on them.

However, Windstar couldn’t afford both ships, and so decided to only buy one. So the Club Med I was bought and given her original name of Wind Surf.

In 2002, the cruise line lost a ship – Wind Song developed an engine room fire on 1st December, and she was scuttled and sank the following month. It had been decided that Carnival and Holland America didn’t want to pay the costs to the French Navy for towing the ship, and scrapping it would’ve been too expensive as well.

In 2007, Carnival sold Windstar Cruises to Ambassadors International, a company with a diverse portfolio of businesses. The price of the sale was $100 million. However, just four years later, the company would file for bankruptcy. Windstar Cruises was put up for auction and the Anschutz Corporation won the bidding with a price of $39 million.

money changing hands

Anschutz Corporation gave the cruise company to its subsidiary, Xanterra Travel Collection.

Windstar Cruises Parent Company

The current parent company of Windstar Cruises is Xanterra Travel Collection. The company owns a number of travel companies across the US, but Windstar Cruises is the only cruise line that the company owns.

The Xanterra Travel Collection is primarily involved in National Park resorts across the US, with resorts situated in Crater Lake, Death Valley, and the Grand Canyon. The company also owns and operates the Grand Canyon Railway.

Windstar Cruises Now

Since Xanterra took over Windstar Cruises, the fleet has grown to its largest-ever size

In 2013, the cruise line purchased three ships from Seabourn Cruise Line – the Star Pride, Star Legend, and Star Breeze. After extensive renovation, the ships joined the active fleet across 2014 and 2015.

And since then, the cruise line has expanded its range of destinations, and now cruises to most regions around the world. Alaska was the latest addition to the portfolio of itineraries, in 2021.

Two New Ships!

Whilst Windstar Cruises currently only has six ships in their fleet, they have recently announced that they will be adding not one, but TWO new all-suite Star Class ships. Windstar announced the news by saying “Coming Dec. 2025, Star Seeker will be our first-ever Star Class new build, followed by Star Explorer in Dec. 2026. Serving 224 guests, each ship will feature 112 suites with full private verandas and infinity windows. They’ll also come with two new Owner’s suites with wrap-around balconies, perfect for evening cocktails or a private dinner.”

New Itineraries

Windstar Cruises has revealed plans for a major expansion of its South Pacific itineraries, the only region besides the Mediterranean where the cruise line operates year-round.

Starting in 2026, Windstar will introduce new sailings to Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands, alongside its established routes in Tahiti and the Society Islands, the Tuamotus, and the Marquesas.

These additions include shorter options, such as a seven-night Tuamotus cruise and an 11-night voyage to the Marquesas, opening up these remote locations to a wider range of travellers.

Conclusion

So there you have it – a brief summary of the history of Windstar Cruises’ ownership and key milestones in the company’s history. For over 30 years, the cruise line has been offering a classical luxury yacht experience at sea, and it only continues to go from strength to strength.

Statistics & How to Avoid Sickness

Norovirus is a common and contagious illness that can affect people on cruise ships as well as on land. This article includes statistics about the prevalence of norovirus on cruise ships, as well as giving helpful information on how to prevent norovirus on your cruise.

Norovirus causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Whilst symptoms can be extremely unpleasant, it is usually short-lived, lasting one or two days.

norovirus on cruise ship

Norovirus On Cruise Ships

Norovirus is caught by having contact with an infected person, either directly, or by touching contaminated surfaces. Norovirus outbreaks can occur on cruise ships when people bring the virus onto the ship and pass it on to others.

Cases of norovirus on cruise ships are reported more commonly than on land because cruise ship passengers are required to report cases to the ship’s medical team. On land, most people recover at home without seeking medical help.

This has resulted in norovirus being incorrectly called ‘the cruise ship disease’ or the ‘cruise ship illness’.

Norovirus Can Happen Anywhere

Whilst cruise ships have a bad reputation for norovirus contamination, norovirus is, in fact, common anywhere where people are contained – such as offices, schools, hospitals and hotels. It is not any more common on cruise ships than in any of these places.

Read on for all the latest statistics about cruise ship norovirus.

Cruise Ship Norovirus Statistics

The Likelihood Of Getting Norovirus On A Cruise

Between 2018 and 2014, 74 million cruise passengers sailed out of US ports. 12,968 of those passengers reported norovirus infections. According to these statistics, the chance of catching norovirus on a cruise is 0.018%. (Source)

The Worst Cruise Ships For Norovirus

The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program records outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships.

In 2024, the cruise line most affected by norovirus was Holland America Line, with four of the ships in it’s fleet suffering an outbreak (Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Rotterdam and Eurodam).

Other norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships in 2024 include:

  • Oceania Cruises – Oceania Nautica
  • Cunard Line – Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 (twice)
  • Princess Cruises – Ruby Princess, Coral Princess and Sapphire Princess
  • P&O Cruises – Arcadia
  • Celebrity Cruises – Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Constellation
  • Royal Caribbean International – Radiance of the Seas

(Source)

The most severe of these outbreaks happened onboard Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 from 21st December 2024-3rd January 2025 where 346 of 2,565 passengers contracted norovirus (13.5%).

Of course, any cruise ship can have an outbreak of norovirus on board, just as any school, hospital or hotel can. These statistics don’t mean that these ships are any less hygienic than ships that have not reported an outbreak.

It’s also important to note that norovirus cruise ship statistics from the CDC only relate to cruises that call at US ports. So cruises to Europe and elsewhere in the world won’t be included in these reports.

The Worst Norovirus Outbreak On A Cruise Ship

The worst outbreak of norovirus on a cruise ship occurred onboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas in January 2014. On this 10-night cruise, 534 out of 3071 (20.6%) passengers or crew reported being ill.

How To Avoid Norovirus On Cruise Ships

Here are four tips for avoiding norovirus on cruise ships.

1. Wash Your Hands

The most effective way to prevent norovirus on a cruise is with regular and thorough handwashing. It is particularly important that you do this after using the bathroom and before and after eating, drinking or smoking.

The most effective way to clean your hands is to wet them with water, apply liquid soap, lather, rinse and dry.

When I was on board a cruise ship during a norovirus outbreak, this flyer about the correct handwashing procedure was distributed to all passengers on their cabins.

norovirus prevention handwashing procedure

2. Use Hand Sanitiser

Alcohol hand gels are not as effective as soap and water, but they are useful at times when soap and water isn’t available.

There will be hand sanitiser available at stations all over the ship, but it’s also a good idea to carry your own. To avoid having to rummage in your bag, hand sanitiser bracelets are an excellent option.

See hand sanitiser bracelets on Amazon.com (if you’re in the US)

See hand sanitiser bracelets on Amazon.co.uk (if you’re in the UK)

3. Avoid Touching Surfaces

Your freshly-washed hands are only clean until you touch something, so you should avoid touching surfaces that are regularly touched by other people.

It’s important that you turn off taps and open bathroom doors using a paper towel to keep your freshly-washed hands clean.

You should also avoid touching elevator buttons with your fingers, and instead use a knuckle or elbow.

Only touch staircase railings if you need to do so for stability. If you’re unsure, you can hover your hand above the railing, so that it’s there if you need to grab it.

hand washing station in cruise ship bathroom

4. Avoid Shaking Hands

Shaking hands with other cruisers is something you should avoid. This is particularly important at mealtimes, as this is when it’s easy to transfer any virus from your hands to your mouth.

Since 2020 (COVID), shaking hands is not as common as it used to be, and declining a handshake is not something that should cause embarrassment.

A cruise ship guest with dirty, mud-covered hands holds them up in front of a buffet, highlighting the unsanitary condition amidst a backdrop of other passengers enjoying their meals. The scene emphasizes the importance of cleanliness and hygiene in communal dining areas.

Stopping The Spread Of The Virus

When norovirus is reported on a cruise ship, the staff will put measures in place to stop the spread of the virus.

Measures to control norovirus outbreaks include:

  • Advising passengers that others are experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness and giving information about what everyone can do to prevent it from spreading
  • Regularly sanitising every area of the ship with a powerful disinfectant called Virox
  • Assigning extra staff to monitor entrances of eating areas to ensure that every passenger washes their hands
  • Removing items such as salt and pepper shakers and butter dishes from tables and replacing them with individual sachets
  • Stopping the use of self-service drinks machines and instead having staff dispense drinks for guests
  • Serving guests at buffets rather than allowing self-service

If these measures are not successful in halting the spread of the disease, in rare cases, it is possible for all passengers to be confined to certain areas of the ship, or to their cabins, or even for the cruise to end early.

Code Red: What It Really Means

Cruise ship staff use secret codes to avoid causing alarm. If you hear CODE RED, it means that there is a serious outbreak of illness on the ship. For a less severe outbreak, you may hear CODE YELLOW.

The exact number of cases needed for each alert level varies by cruise ship. It may be a certain number of cases or a certain percentage of passengers and crew on the ship.

What To Do If You Catch Norovirus On A Cruise

1. Report It

As soon as you become unwell, it’s vital that you return to your cabin and call reception to report it.

They will advise you about what to do next and arrange a phone call with one of the ship’s nurses, who can give you medical advice. The medical team will phone regularly to check how you are feeling.

2. Isolate Yourself

You must stay in your cabin until 24 hours after any vomiting or diarrhoea has stopped.

Your cabin will be regularly sanitised by specially-trained crew members. If you require any additional housekeeping, you can call reception, and someone will be with you quickly. You can also have any items of clothing cleaned free of charge if needed.

3. Rest And Recover

Whilst quarantined in your cabin, you can order from room service free of charge. There is a specially planned menu to assist with recovery, which includes bland items such as toast, porridge, soup, sandwiches, grilled chicken breast, salad and chips. Your meals will be served on disposable plates.

As you are not permitted to leave the ship during the isolation period, if you have booked shore excursions with the cruise line, the cost of these will be refunded to you.

If you have booked excursions independently, you may be able to cancel them if you give 24 hours’ notice. If you are unable to do this, you may be able to claim on your travel insurance, depending on the policy details.

Cruise Lines With Ships You Can Buy a Cabin and Live On

While living on a cruise ship might be a dream for many, there are actually several cruise lines that offer cabins you can buy and use as a permanent residence.

The World cruise ship
The World

Yes, you can actually live on any cruise ship that you want, but it would require booking a cruise on every single voyage on that ship. You also would not be able to decorate the cabin as you would not own it.  A better solution?  Buy a cabin on one of the following cruise lines and explore the world from the comfort of your home.

There are two cruise lines currently in service that offer residential living with one more (Crescent Seas) launching in 2026 and another could launch a few years after.

Current Cruise Lines

The World

The world’s first cruise ship that offered cabins you can buy and live in full time.  There are 135 residences laid out on the 12 decks on the ship. 106 of them are apartments with the rest being studios.

The cruise ship was launched in 2002 and at 644 feet long, the ship’s website actually refers to itself as the largest private yacht in the world and the “most exclusive floating city on the planet”. The residents vote on the ports and itinerary that the ship will visit in the upcoming season.

Many of the apartments aboard the ship have been designed by the cruise ship residents, but they are not cheap. To enjoy this mobile and adventurous lifestyle, it will cost you between $2-15 million. But for a view that is always changing from one spectacular sight to another, and to be able to enjoy stress-free traveling to exotic locations, the families aboard the World have decided that the price is well worth it.

Villa Vie Residences

Villa Vie cruise ship

Villa Vie Residences launched in 2024 and currently has one ship that does continual 3 1/2 year world cruises. They offer not only full ownership of cabins, but also seasonal options and rentals.

Prices for seasonal ownership start at $24,999 with full ownership at $129,999 per cabin.

Their ship Odyssey is scheduled to visit 147 countries and 425 destinations during the first 3.5 year cruise.

You can visit their website at www.villavieresidences.com.

Proposed Future Cruise Lines

Crescent Seas

The Navigator (Credit: Bespoke Luxury Marketing, Crescent Seas)

Crescent Seas is the newest residential cruise line that was announced just a few weeks ago. They are scheduled to have one ship enter service in 2026 with a second vessel being added in late 2027.

They have purchased Seven Seas Navigator from Regent Seven Seas Cruises for their first ship. Once the ship is done sailing with Regent in 2026, it will start sailing with Crescent Seas. Cabins start at $750,000 and go up to $8 million.

In late 2027, the cruise line will be adding a second ship, Insignia, to their fleet. They have purchased the vessel from Oceania Cruises, but it will remain with them until the scheduled cruises have been completed.  Cabins start at $650,000 and go up to $10 million.

Crescent Seas has plans to add three more ships over the next few years for a total of five residential vessels.

You can visit their website at www.crescentseas.com.

Storylines

Storylines narrative

Storylines has been promising to launch a residential cruise ship since early 2018. They originally had plans to convert an older cruise ship to residential living with condos starting at $155,000 each.

After plans failed to buy an older ship and convert it, they launched plans to build a completely new cruise ship (that can be seen above) that has 530 private residences.

Prices now start at $625,000 and go up to $10 million with 12 different options available.

However, the question remains, will the ship ever be built? It’s been over five years since the new ship was announced and the first piece of steel has yet to be cut on the ship.

The cruise line did release a press release in February 2025 saying that they are now in Phase 2, the Basic Design of the ship. Phase 1 was the Initial Design.

They also stated that they renewed the ship-building contract with the shipyard (Brodosplit). They also no longer have a launch date on their website, at least that I could find. The last expected sail date that they included in a press release was in 2023 when they said it the ship would launch in 2026, which would now be impossible.

You can visit Storylines.com for more information on them.

Cruise Passenger Asks About Not Coming Back to the Ship on Purpose

Can you just get off a cruise ship at a port of call and decide to not come back?  Is this a bad idea or an even worse idea?  We’ll tackle that topic after a passenger thought about trying it.

Celebrity Constellation in port with buses

It’s not entirely uncommon for cruise passengers to miss their ship when visiting a port of call.   Usually, it’s an accident though, and there’s a mad dash down the pier to try to catch the ship before it sails off to the next stop.

Some have made it a veteran cruiser’s rite of passage to watch the “pier runners” that inevitably arrive 5 minutes before “all aboard” time.  The lido deck is usually full of cheerleaders egging them on.

But what if you’re just done with the cruise experience or just want to get off the ship and stay off mid-cruise?

It might be tempting for U.S. travelers if the ship happens to be stopping at another U.S. port.

Well, that’s exactly what a recent Reddit user was asking the cruise community. They were staring down a Princess Cruise itinerary—NYC, Canada, back to NYC, with Boston as the last pit stop—and the question hit them: what if they just… didn’t get back on?

“If we decide we’re ready for the trip to be over, what exactly is the consequence of just getting off the boat in Boston? I think I’d tell someone (guest services, I suppose) but is this a bad idea for some reason?” the social media post asked.

Understanding the PVSA

My first response to this is to say, “please don’t try it”.  And there are a number of reasons why, mainly because of the U.S. ports used in this example.

But it is somewhat of a complicated issue.  The core issue being the Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA) of 1886. This law restricts foreign-flagged ships, the norm for cruise lines, from transporting passengers directly between U.S. ports without a stop at a ‘distant foreign port’ outside North America.

So, a trip from New York to Boston with a Canadian stop still violates this rule.

Consequences of Playing Hooky

Attempting to disembark in Boston without permission comes with consequences. First, you should expect to pay a hefty fine which could be as high as $900 to $1,000.  And second, you could even be banned from the cruise line in some cases.

Even medical emergencies where the passenger cannot resume the trip but has to be transported to a hospital are not exempt from this rule.  People in these situations often have to pay a fine as well.

So, add that to the ever-growing list of reasons to have cruise travel insurance no matter what.

Beyond the cost, you’ll encounter customs and immigration issues as it skips standard entry procedures, causing potential delays.

Also, take into account that you’re delaying the entire ship from leaving port as they wait for you and try to pinpoint your location.  So, it’s not very courteous to everyone else on vacation.

It’s Different for Foreign Ports

Disembarking at a foreign port though, unlike a U.S. one, avoids PVSA restrictions altogether.

User u/seoulbro’s experience in Victoria, Canada, demonstrates this: after informing the cruise line, they disembarked with no legal issues, just a routine passport check.

“We let the cruise know a few days in advance, they took our passports, then returned them the next day. No charge, and we just left!” they said.

While the PVSA is irrelevant at foreign ports, passengers still need to notify the cruise line, comply with local immigration rules, and understand any specific policies the cruise line might have regarding disembarkation.

They are also responsible for their own travel arrangements from that foreign port.

A Few Things to Remember

It’s important to know that while the PVSA doesn’t apply at foreign ports, cruise lines still have their own policies regarding disembarkation. Passengers should always:

  • Notify the Cruise Line: Even when leaving at a foreign port, it’s essential to inform the cruise line in advance. This allows them to update passenger manifests and coordinate with local authorities if necessary. Some cruise lines have special forms to fill out if you want to get off early.
  • Comply with Local Immigration: Passengers must still follow the immigration rules of the foreign country. This may involve having a valid passport, visa, or other necessary documentation.
  • Understand Cruise Line Policies: Cruise lines may have their own rules regarding disembarkation, even at foreign ports. These policies may address baggage handling, check-out procedures, and potential fees. Don’t just read random advice on a forum online.  Find out straight from the source.
  • Consider Transportation: Passengers leaving at a foreign port are responsible for arranging their own onward travel. It might seem like an obvious point, but you have to get home somehow.

Bottom Line

So, before you decide to skip the ship in a U.S. port, remember the fines, the potential bans, and the disruption you’ll cause. If you’re set on leaving early, a one-way cruise or a foreign port disembarkation might be a better route. And always—always—talk to the cruise line first. They’re the ones who set the rules, after all.

Carnival Explains Why They Don’t Use Reservation Tickets for Shows

After being on dozens of cruise ships and always trying to see the shows offered, I’ve seen both sides of the “reservation only” or “show-up-anytime” experiences.  Carnival is one cruise line that does not offer reservations and recently explained why.

Carnival Celebration Theater
Theater on Carnival Celebration during the morning show. Photo credit: Cruise Fever

The Capacity Challenge

The ability to have room for those who want to see a show is a bigger deal on bigger cruise ships.  Not every passenger can fit in the theater at the same time.  In fact, not even half of the capacity of the cruise ship can usually fit in the main theater.

For instance, Carnival Celebration’s theater can hold a bit over 1,000 guests–maybe 1,200 at the most.  And on any given sailing the ship can have almost 6,000 guests (5,374 at double-capacity).

While, sure, there are usually two shows to accommodate everyone, there’s usually one sitting that is a more popular time than the other.

To make sure it’s a seamless process, some cruise lines have adopted a ticket reservation policy.  You simply use the cruise line’s app to reserve your spot, and you’re good to go.

Carnival’s Reasoning: No-Shows

Carnival Cruise Line was recently asked about this as they currently don’t take reservations for their shows.

Carnival’s Brand Ambassador John Heald acknowledged on Facebook that “on some ships the shows do get very full which is why we have increased the number of performances”.

He then asked the fans on social media if a ticket system would help.

But before the cruise blogs and Youtube accounts started announcing a policy change, Heald emphasized that this is not something they are announcing.  It’s merely a discussion.

Reservations slots were actually offered on Carnival when Carnival Dream first started sailing.

So, why doesn’t Carnival offer reservation tickets and spots for their shows?

“The main problem was that people would line up for tickets and then not show up for the ummmm, show,” Heald simply put it.

Carnival Horizon main theater
Main theater on Carnival Horizon

And I’ve seen this happen on other cruise lines as well.  It’s the very reason that even when a show is fully reserved, crew members will advise you to show up for the show anyway.  There are always passengers who either forget or end up doing something else.

Sometimes people get reservations just because they want to avoid FOMO later on as well, so they get the show reserved out of panic.  After all, on a cruise ship you never know what you’ll be doing in the next 10 minutes never mind in the next few hours, right?

Heald then asked for comments on the Facebook post to see how people would feel about ticket reservations.

Heald posted this poll:

“A. YES, PLEASE PROVIDE TICKETS FOR ALL SHOWS

B. YES, PLEASE PROVIDE TICKETS FOR ALL THE SHOWS AND CHARGE A FEW DOLLARS TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE ATTEND

C. NO TICKETS – THANK YOU”

The Fans Have Voted

So, the Carnival crowd spoke, and they spoke loudly for option C, a clear winner when reading through the comments.

It really underscores how much they appreciate the flexibility of the current system and not being tied down to reservations. It looks like Carnival is prioritizing that freedom based on what their passengers are telling them.

The reservation question is a classic trade-off: guaranteed entry versus the ability to be spontaneous. And right now, Carnival’s passengers are definitely leaning towards the spontaneous side.

Or maybe they’ve seen the same thing Heald as seen.  People getting reservations only to not show up, causing more of a headache for everyone else.

Insignia will be the second residential cruise ship in Crescent Seas’ fleet in 2027. The cruise line earlier announced that they purchased Seven Seas Navigator from Regent that will begin sailing with them in 2026.

The new cruise ship will stay in Oceania’s fleet until late 2027. The vessel will then receive a $50 million makeover and feature 290 residences that you can buy with prices ranging from $650,000 to $10 million.

Cabins will open for sale to the public later this summer from the sales gallery on the 8th floor of the Gale Miami Hotel & Residences.

Sales on their first ship, Navigator, open for sale on April 9 with cabins costing between $750,000 to $8 million.

Amenities will include private butler service, refined gourmet dining, bespoke on-deck experiences, Starlink internet connection, and more.

The cruise ships will spend up to five days in port at a time and visit all seven continents.

Each cruise ship will be staffed by its existing onboard service provider, The Apollo Group, which will manage all onboard hospitality and culinary offerings. The company has over five decades of expertise in luxury cruising.

Russell W. Galbut, Co Founder & Managing Principal, Crescent Heights and Founder and Chairman of Crescent Seas, gave the following statement:

“As a developer, I know real estate has always been defined by location, location, location, as we say. With Crescent Seas, we’ve eliminated that limitation. Residents will have a view corridor like never before. Now, your home isn’t bound to a single address – it moves with you, taking you to the world’s most breathtaking destinations.”

Marisa Galbut, President of Crescent Seas, added:

“Imagine traveling the world without ever leaving the comfort of your own home. With our ownership model, families can share once-in-a-lifetime experiences seamlessly. Forget the hassle of planning vacations—embrace the freedom of remote work while exploring the world from your own residence at sea.”

Crescent Seas plans on adding three more luxury residence cruise ships over the next five years.

There is currently only one fully dedicated residential cruise ship sailing right now, The World. Villa Vie Residences also has a ship that you can buy a cabin and live in, but they also offer short term rentals.

Viral Expedition Video Shows Crazy Waves Battering Cruise Ship

A travel blogger has gone viral after sharing jaw-dropping footage of her latest expedition cruise, as waves of 35 feet battered the windows.

Quark Expeditions Drake Passage

Lesley Anne Murphy stunned social media with the footage of the so-called “Drake shake” – the notoriously rough sea conditions experienced while crossing the Drake Passage aboard Ocean Explorer, a polar-class expedition ship operated by Quark Expeditions.

The video she shared was so wild that it sparked arguments across social media from many who assumed it was fake – unfortunately the video gained traction just as April Fool’s Day pranks were circulating.

Murphy, a seasoned traveller and content creator, was en route to Antarctica on what she described as a “once-in-a-lifetime” voyage.

But the journey across the Drake Passage – the treacherous stretch of sea between South America and Antarctica – quickly turned from serene to savage.

Dubbed the “Drake shake” versus the rare “Drake lake” for calm crossings, Murphy’s viral video shows the ship being pummelled by waves estimated at 35 feet high.

Passengers can be seen gripping railings, sliding across floors, and bracing against walls as the vessel pitched and rolled violently for nearly 48 hours.

“Yes, we were safe and it was insane… and at times, even fun?” Murphy shared on social media. “1000% worth it for this trip of a lifetime!”

In one particularly intense moment, a flatscreen television is shown swinging back and forth in a stateroom – a stark reminder of how relentless the sea can be.

Viral reactions and wild seas

Murphy’s video has since garnered over 454,000 likes and more than 10,000 comments, with viewers expressing awe, terror, and admiration in equal measure.

The extreme footage has sparked curiosity and concern, prompting questions about ship safety, life jackets, and seasickness remedies.

While the Drake Passage is infamous for its turbulent conditions, Quark Expeditions reassures travellers that not all crossings are rough.

In fact, its official website notes, “Not all Drake Passage crossings are rough. Please do not be disappointed should you experience a smooth crossing.”

Still, it’s clear that this was not one of those occasions.

Despite the wild weather, guests were never in danger.

Ocean Explorer is specifically designed for polar expeditions, featuring an ice-strengthened hull and a unique inverted bow design to enhance stability and reduce wave impact.

The ship is rated for polar travel and accommodates just 138 guests in high comfort.

Its amenities include a two-storey library overlooking the bow (where the crashing waves made for a dramatic view), expansive observation decks, a sauna, a fitness centre, and tastefully appointed staterooms.

Onboard are also 15 zodiac boats used for up-close exploration in the Arctic and Antarctic, led by a team of expert expedition leaders.

Passengers were advised to remain in their cabins for an afternoon during the most intense part of the crossing – an understandable precaution when flatscreens are swaying and hallways resemble obstacle courses.

While the current Antarctic season is winding down, Ocean Explorer will resume expeditions in November. Its next scheduled sailing is an 11-night voyage departing Ushuaia, Argentina on 4th November 2025.

Pricing begins at $14,531 USD per person for a veranda stateroom, with solo cabins and suites starting around $18,084. Fares include expert-led expeditions and a complimentary Quark Expeditions parka.

For adventurous travellers like Murphy, the “Drake shake” was all part of the magic.

Though not for the faint of heart – or stomach – the reward of reaching the icy majesty of Antarctica made every lurch and crash worthwhile.

And for those with a taste for extreme cruising, it’s just another reason to add the White Continent to the bucket list.

Cruise Guests Mugged By Swarm Of Local Youths

A terrifying incident unfolded on a cruise around Africa this week, when a group of around 50 youths attacked cruise guests.

Crystal Symphony Mombasa Kenya attack

The incident occurred when Crystal Symphony made a visit to Mombasa in Kenya on 31st March 2025.

As a result of the incident, the ship cancelled the remainder of its stay in the port and left early, to avoid further risk to guests.

The attack occurred at the Pembe za Ndovu monument on Moi Avenue, a well-known Mombasa landmark made up of four large aluminum elephant tusks forming the letter “M.”

The site is popular with tourists and cruise passengers looking for a cultural photo opportunity or brief excursion into the city.

According to The Standard, the group of young assailants swarmed the area and began snatching valuables including mobile phones, handbags, and jewellery.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the psychological impact and disruption were enough to cause the ship to cancel the remainder of its visit.

Kenyan authorities respond

In response, Kenyan officials boarded Crystal Symphony shortly after the incident to personally apologise to the passengers and crew, and to reassure the cruise line of their commitment to tourist safety.

Police presence was also increased in the area around the attack in case of further disturbances.

While Mombasa isn’t generally flagged as a high-risk area in travel advisories, the US Department of State currently lists Kenya at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, citing incidents of mugging, pickpocketing, and street theft, particularly involving motorcycles.

The advisory warns that local police response may be limited, especially in busy or tourist-heavy zones, and that travellers should take personal safety precautions, such as staying in groups and avoiding the public display of valuables.

Crystal Symphony is currently in the midst of a 25-night voyage from Mumbai, India to Cape Town, South Africa, which began on 18th March.

The ship had already visited India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the Seychelles without issue prior to arriving in Kenya.

After the attack, the decision was made to skip the remainder of the Mombasa stop, with the ship sailing early toward its next port of call in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The ship will also visit Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town, where the cruise ends on 12th April.

This incident adds to a string of port-related safety concerns that have cropped up in recent months. While isolated, these events can raise alarm among travellers.

In response to various threats over the past year, cruise lines have not hesitated to alter itineraries to avoid dangerous conditions. For example:

  • Royal Caribbean cancelled multiple visits to Labadee, Haiti in 2024 due to political unrest.
  • New Caledonia has seen itinerary changes amid local riots.
  • Cunard’s Queen Anne even dimmed lights and closed decks overnight in pirate-prone waters near the Philippines.

Still, experts and cruise lines emphasise that cruise travel remains one of the safest ways to see the world, thanks to active monitoring of geopolitical situations and emergency protocols.

Crystal Symphony is the only cruise ship scheduled to visit Mombasa for the remainder of 2025. Its next visit is set for January 2026, with an overnight stop on the itinerary – though that visit may now be under review.

Other lines with occasional calls in Kenya include Azamara, Viking, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas, all of which cater to luxury or expedition-style cruising.

For cruise travellers, this serves as a reminder to stay alert in port, leave valuables onboard, and travel in groups when exploring unfamiliar destinations.
