Private Island Cruise Destination Renamed ‘RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay’ In Support Of Enhancement And Expansion

Half Moon Cay, the highly-rated and award-winning exclusive destination known for beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters in The Bahamas, is being renamed RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay in support of its enhancements and the experience guests can expect as they are immersed in this tropical paradise. The announcement was made today jointly by Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line.

The two cruise lines are partnering on the enhancements, which will include an expanded beachfront experience, lunch venues, a variety of bars, and other features that will reinforce the destination’s natural beauty and tropical appeal. A newly-constructed pier on the north side will allow ships to dock, including Carnival’s Excel class ships that will be able to visit the island for the first time.

Guests will arrive at distinct welcome plazas on the island’s south and north sides, spanning over one mile of white-sand beach. The existing development on the south side will receive a refreshing Bahamian touch-up, a new beach club, an updated lunch venue and renovated facilities. The newly developed north side will feature two lunch venues and a variety of island-themed bars. There will also be a new tram service, making getting around easy and convenient. In addition, lounging areas will be expanded, cabanas added and a new shore excursion pier on the north side will connect guests with recreational activities. All RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay upgrades are designed with nature in mind, including architecture that complements the island’s stunning authenticity.

“Holland America guests have loved Half Moon Cay for its natural beauty since it opened as a port of call in 1997,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line. “The south side of the island, where Holland America has always visited, will remain the secluded paradise our guests are accustomed to and a marquee destination for almost every cruise visiting the Caribbean. The new beach club and refreshed food and beverage spaces will embrace and preserve the island’s pristine beauty while enhancing our award-winning experience.”

“Calling this piece of paradise RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay reinforces our commitment to preserve the attributes that make the destination so appealing as we expand access and welcome more guests to the destination’s crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches and lush landscapes,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Many of our 2026 and beyond itineraries will feature both RelaxAway and Celebration Key, providing guests with complimentary experiences enjoying both idyllic and ultimate beach days.

The destination’s enhancements will begin to be completed by summer 2026 and continue through the end of the year. Further details will be shared in the coming months.

Cruises Combining Sport And Gastronomy

Oceania Cruises stands out among other cruise lines by going above and beyond when it comes to cooking classes: its talented culinary team can arrange shopping trips in ports for market-fresh ingredients before returning back onboard for an in-depth cooking class onboard ship.

From ceremonial wrestling to New Zealand’s national game of rugby, spectator sports offer a fascinating window into another culture.

Train for a new sport

Cruises dedicated to specific sports offer a unique blend of adventure and athletic development. Passengers can participate in group competitions, tournaments, and receive coaching from experts, often with stays at specialized training camps in inspiring new environments. This immersive experience not only hones athletic skills but also creates unforgettable memories. For those interested in basketball, exploring NBA betting odds can add an extra layer of excitement to following the sport, especially during sports-themed cruises. However, stay vigilant, as some events, like cooking demos, might double as promotions for the cruise line’s premium services.

Keep an eye out for activities on cruises billed as sports and gastronomy events which could actually serve as advertisements for services or products; such as cooking demos that serve as ads for the cruise line’s premium restaurant.

Enjoy a new cuisine

Cruise lines place great emphasis on culinary experiences, from fine dining in specialty restaurants to buffets and light bites. Some offer gourmet meals for an additional charge, while others include them as part of the standard cruise fare.

Your line may feature cooking demonstrations and exclusive chef-hosted dinners led by master chefs. For example, Holland America ensures a master chef is onboard every sailing and often invites renowned culinary specialists for special cruises throughout the year. For those who enjoy pairing their culinary adventures with a touch of entertainment or gaming, checking out Melbet could provide an interesting diversion during your downtime.

Restaurants onboard Silversea offer everything from traditional rotisseries and American steakhouse fare, to innovative takes on classic dishes. One such example is La Dame restaurant on board Silversea; offering fine French gastronomy in an elegant contemporary space with white-glove table service, serving seared duck foie gras, lobster bisque, Dover sole and souffles among its delicious menu items.

Visit Eden for an unforgettable sensory experience or Le Petit Chef where a charming animated chef prepares your food in 3D. Additionally, MSC Culinary Discovery Tours feature celebrity chefs to help guests develop their culinary expertise with hands-on demonstrations and tastings.

There are also plenty of casual venues on most ships, ranging from burgers and fries at the Pool Grill to Norwegian classics like Mamsen’s in the Grand Atrium. And don’t forget cheesecake, chocolate ganache cake and warm milk and cookies to satisfy any sweet tooth you may have!

Discover a new destination

Your ideal cruise depends on your interests; for example, those offering unique insights into their destination. This might involve participating in culinary excursions dedicated to regional food and wine or touring local distilleries together for spirit tasting experiences.

Cruise ships typically provide sit-down dining service for breakfast, lunch and dinner; however, many also feature satellite restaurants offering more casual options such as Mamsen’s in Norway or at their pool grill, offering made-to-order burgers and light bites. On a Holland America cruise you could dine at Mamsen’s for Norwegian favorites or the pool grill for made-to-order burgers and light bites.

Many dining venues also offer special culinary events and experiences, from guest chefs giving cooking demonstrations or coffee chats, to working with top culinary schools to offer immersive learning opportunities that highlight regional dishes and wines you will be sailing to.

On a cruise with MSC Group’s luxury brand Explora Journeys, for instance, head of culinary operations Franck Garanger is renowned French master chef acclaimed Franck Garanger is responsible for creating menus that showcase authentic tastes from each destination while offering a truly international experience onboard. Expect freshly shucked oysters on the half shell, ceviche and free range and organic chicken at Emporium Marketplace along with plant-based meals, wellness selections and grilled seafood throughout your voyage.

How To Take Care Of House Pets While Traveling On A Cruise Ship

Only some cruise ships offer the opportunity to take pets with them. At the moment, only one such liner is known. It can be difficult to be away from your four-legged friends while traveling, especially if you are going with the whole family. After all, they are also a part of it.

Animals are not allowed on board for various reasons. There are safety concerns, as it is not always possible to secure safe conditions for animals during a voyage, especially in case of storms or other unpredictables. Additionally, there are space limitations on ships, both on deck and in cabins, making it hard to offer healthy conditions for animals. They can also be noisy, disrupting the comfort of other passengers.

For these reasons, your pets should be left on land. It is important to think about the place you leave them before the trip. Also important is with whom, to make sure that your absence goes as smoothly as possible for them.

Choosing a Responsible Person or Care Service

  • Relatives and friends: Ask the person you trust to take care of the pet during your absence. Be sure to explain the specifics of the animal’s care, habits and diet.
  • Hotels and kennels: Special places for animals where they offer care, nutrition and walking. They have whole cozy rooms or aviaries with comfortable bedding and toys. Some hotels even offer individual rooms with webcams. So you can check your pet’s condition online at any time.
  • Professional pet sitter: If you prefer your pet to stay in a familiar environment, and there are no willing relatives, home care services can be an excellent option. Many companies carefully select and train their sitters and they offer flexible timetables. This way you can schedule visits on days when your relatives or friends are busy.

Whoever you choose to leave your four-legged friend with, you should carefully prepare before leaving.

Not to Forget Before the Cruise

  • Leave the instructions: Note in detail the nutrition schedule, the number of servings, walking time and other care features.
  • Stock of food and things: Prepare food, bowls, toys, leash, tray and filler, as well as medicines if they are needed. For cats and dogs, you can use automatic feeders that will help to keep up with their diet.
  • Make the location known: If you plan to leave your pet in a hotel or kennel, then bring him to get acquainted a few days before departure. It’s gonna be easier for the animal to get used to the new environment. There you can leave your pet’s favorite blanket or toy to reduce stress. These items retain the smell of the house and the owner, which can calm the pet.
  • Heed about the health care: Make sure your pet is vaccinated and treated against fleas and ticks before leaving. We recommend conducting a home DNA test for your cat or dog. This way you can specify the breed, genetic characteristics, potential risks of diseases and the general health of the pet. Services like basepaws review and provide such data.
  • Check your veterinarian: Give the contacts of a trusted veterinarian in case of an emergency. Many clinics offer round-the-clock medical care and monitoring of the condition of pets.
  • Upgrade the picture: Install the webcam in the house so that you can watch your pet in real time. Some cameras even allow you to interact with your pet through a microphone and speaker. Make sure that the camera is well attached and located in a place where the pet often spends time.

A few weeks before departure, start gradually increasing the time that the pet spends alone. This will help him get used to your absence. Start with short periods of absence and gradually increase their duration.

Use positive reinforcement to associate your absence with pleasant moments. This means that you should learn to give your pet your favorite treats or toys before leaving. Create positive associations with your absence so that the pet does not feel anxious.

***

Ensuring the mental health of your pets while you are away requires careful planning and attention to detail. By following these guidelines and examples, you can reduce your pet’s stress and unease, providing them with comfort in your absence. This will allow you to embark on your cruise with peace of mind, knowing that your furry companion is content and well-cared.

Gastrointestinal Illness Spreads on Queen Mary 2 During Transatlantic Holiday Cruise

The holiday season has been marred for several cruise guests after a gastrointestinal illness outbreak aboard Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2, currently sailing a transatlantic voyage.

Queen Mary 2 New York

The 2,691-passenger ship departed Southampton, England, on 14th December 2024, bound for New York City, where it is scheduled to arrive on 21st December.

Afterward, the vessel will continue on a 28-night journey through the Caribbean, visiting ports including St. Maarten, Dominica, and Barbados.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on December 19 that 100 passengers, representing over 4 percent of the 2,430 onboard, along with seven of the 1,237 crew members, have been affected by the illness.

Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

Cunard Line has initiated enhanced cleaning protocols to mitigate the outbreak. Infected passengers have been isolated, and stool specimens are being collected for testing to determine the cause.

It is unclear whether all passengers will need to disembark in New York for additional deep cleaning before embarking on the subsequent Caribbean leg of the itinerary.

The CDC defines such cases as acute gastroenteritis (AGE), which includes “three or more loose stools within a 24-hour period or vomiting accompanied by symptoms like muscle ache, headache, abdominal cramps, or fever.”

A spate of holiday outbreaks

Queen Mary 2 is one of several ships grappling with illness outbreaks during the holiday season. The ship last experienced a significant outbreak during a 2012 Christmas cruise, which affected over 200 passengers.

In December alone, similar outbreaks have been reported on Holland America Line’s Rotterdam and Zuiderdam, as well as P&O Cruises’ Ventura.

On Rotterdam, 83 passengers and 12 crew members fell ill on a Caribbean sailing, while 74 guests and four crew members were affected on Zuiderdam. Both ships are operating out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

Ventura, sailing the Canary Islands from Southampton, reported an unspecified number of cases of what was suspected to be AGE or norovirus earlier this month.

AGE and norovirus are highly contagious, often spreading through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. The CDC notes symptoms may take up to 48 hours to appear and can last three days, meaning the duration of an entire cruise can be impacted.

Cruise lines are working to contain the illnesses through isolation of symptomatic passengers, limiting buffet services, and increasing cleaning efforts.

Disney Treasure Experiences Sprinkler Malfunction Days Before Maiden Voyage

Disney Treasure encountered an unexpected hiccup when a malfunction in the Grand Hall’s sprinkler system caused an indoor rain shower on 15th December 2024.

Disney Treasure sprinkler malfunction

The 144,000-gross-ton ship, set to embark on her maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, Florida, on 21st December, is currently giving a preview of her grandeur to media and travel professionals in the days leading up to the sailing.

I was on one of these cruises – luckily, not the one when this incident happened but the one just prior to it!

“An apparent technical glitch in the HI-FOG (fire suppression system) in the Grand Hall of the Disney Treasure produced an indoor rain shower for about three minutes earlier today,”

Witness statement

The incident occurred at an ideal time for such a malfunction, as no paying passengers were on board and the crew had ample time to address the issue.

Similar incidents highlight sprinkler system importance

Disney Treasure’s quick response avoided any significant disruption.

Crew members immediately cordoned off the affected area, used industrial-grade dryers to address the soaked carpet, and ensured no damage to the hall’s paintwork or Aladdin-themed décor, including the statue of the genie’s lamp.

Guests attending the preview event reported minimal impact on their experience, with festivities continuing as planned, though the main hall floor remained inaccessible for part of the day while it dried.

Sprinkler malfunctions, while rare, aren’t unique to Disney Cruise Line.

Royal Caribbean recently experienced two similar incidents. On 31st October 2024, a Halloween party on Symphony of the Seas triggered the sprinklers in the Royal Promenade, activating the ship’s watertight doors and soaking guests.

A second event occurred on Harmony of the Seas on 16th November, 2024, though the cause remains unclear – rumours it was caused by smoke from a pizza oven haven’t been confirmed.

These occurrences underscore the importance of functional sprinkler systems, which are essential for shipboard fire safety despite occasional malfunctions.

Maiden voyage preparations remain on track

Thanks to the quick action of Disney Treasure’s crew, the Grand Hall is expected to be in pristine condition for the ship’s first official passengers.

With drying completed and no lasting effects reported, guests embarking on the maiden voyage should enjoy the magical welcome Disney Cruise Line has planned.

The 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary will include stops at Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas.

After her maiden voyage, Disney Treasure will alternate between week-long Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, promising enchanting experiences for every guest.

Carnival Cruise Line Donates $60,000 to Vanuatu Earthquake Relief as Region Faces Long Recovery

On 16th December 2024, Port Vila, Vanuatu, was struck by a devastating magnitude 7.3 earthquake, leaving the island nation grappling with widespread destruction, missing survivors, and mounting casualties.

Port Vila Vanuatu

The quake, centred just 19 miles from Port Vila, occurred at 12:47 pm local time and was followed by aftershocks reaching magnitudes of up to 5.5.

Amid the tragedy, Carnival Cruise Line has stepped forward with a $60,000 donation to ProMedical Vanuatu, a critical paramedic service assisting in search and rescue operations and providing emergency medical care.

“Carnival Corporation & plc is donating $60,000 to first responder, ProMedical Vanuatu. The ProMedical team worked around the clock for the first 48 hours after tragedy struck in Port Vila, searching for survivors in the rubble and helping provide critical medical care to the injured,”

“This donation has been made possible thanks to all of Carnival Corporation & plc cruise lines operating in the region – Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, Cunard, and P&O Cruises Australia as well as the generosity of P&O guests,”

Carnival statement.

The donation will help ProMedical Vanuatu continue its vital work in Port Vila, which is home to over 49,000 residents.

Vanuatu faces a long road to recovery

The capital city of Port Vila, located on Efate Island in Vanuatu’s South Pacific archipelago, has suffered significant damage, including to government buildings housing key embassies, as well as power and water supply disruptions.

The port area itself has been severely impacted, with landslides isolating the shipping terminal and burying sections of the wharf.

Caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai has declared a state of emergency in Port Vila and imposed a curfew in the hardest-hit areas from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., set to last until at least December 23.

Compounding the crisis, a low-pressure system is approaching Vanuatu, threatening heavy rains and the possibility of a cyclone. In a Facebook video, Vanuatu President Nikenike Vurobaravu warned of “cascading hazards” and urged caution in affected areas.

Cruise lines, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and others, have suspended ship calls to Port Vila until damage can be fully assessed and necessary repairs are completed.

Carnival has pledged to remain in contact with Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office and offered its ships for additional assistance if required.
