82-Year-Old Cruise Passenger Dies in Tragic Accident in St. Maarten

An 82-year-old cruise passenger tragically lost her life in a heart-breaking accident in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, on 26th December, 2024.

St Maarten Pier

According to the Police Force of Sint Maarten, the incident occurred around 5 pm local time when the woman fell into the water from her electric wheelchair, which is suspected to have malfunctioned.

It remains unclear whether the device was her personal wheelchair or a rental for the duration of her cruise.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that a malfunction in the victim’s electric wheelchair, an 82-year-old female, may have contributed to her fall into the water. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel to administer emergency resuscitation, the victim sadly succumbed at the scene.”

Police Force of Sint Maarten

Emergency services arrived promptly and performed life-saving measures, but the victim could not be revived.

The exact injuries sustained during the accident and whether pre-existing health conditions played a role in her death have not been disclosed.

The identity of the deceased passenger and the cruise ship she was traveling on have not been confirmed, though reports from a visitor in port that day suggest she was a guest aboard AIDA Cruises’ AIDAmar.

In addition to AIDAmar, five other cruise ships, including Queen Mary 2, Symphony of the Seas, and Celebrity Ascent, were docked at the busy port.

A series of tragic incidents for the cruise industry

This fatal accident is the latest in a series of sombre incidents for the cruise industry in December 2024.

Just one day earlier, on Christmas Day, a 51-year-old man went overboard from Norwegian Epic while the ship was en route from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, to Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas.

Despite an extensive search and rescue operation involving Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam, the effort ended without success.

Earlier in the month, on 21st December, a passenger aboard Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess attempted to jump overboard but tragically hit a lifeboat and fell to a lower deck, succumbing to her injuries despite the medical team’s efforts.

Similarly, Princess Cruises’ Ruby Princess experienced a man-overboard situation earlier in December, with the case remaining under investigation as the missing passenger was not reported until the end of the cruise.

While rare, such incidents highlight the importance of vigilance and safety measures onboard and ashore to prevent further tragedies.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Manzanillo Port Calls Amid Travel Advisory Warnings

Royal Caribbean has cancelled stops at the Mexican port of Manzanillo following the US State Department’s issuance of a level 4 “do not travel” advisory for Colima, the state where the port is located.

Manzanillo Mexico and Royal Caribbean

The advisory cites concerns over violent crime and gang activity, including targeted assassinations and kidnapping.

Manzanillo, a popular stop on Mexican Riviera itineraries, is now deemed too risky for Royal Caribbean itineraries.

However, Carnival Corporation’s Princess Cruises still lists Manzanillo on sailings scheduled for February and September 2025, underscoring differences in how cruise lines are responding to the advisory.

The US State Department’s advisory highlights the dangers in Colima, where travel for government employees is strictly limited to tourist and port areas of Manzanillo. Despite those areas being permitted, Royal Caribbean clearly doesn’t want to take any risks.

The updated travel warning describes widespread violent crime and gang activity in the region, with many homicides tied to organised criminal groups.

The statement adds that bystanders have been injured or killed in gang-related shootings, further amplifying concerns for tourist safety.

While Royal Caribbean no longer features the port on any itineraries, Princess Cruises and other lines continue to offer stops in the city.

The cruise lines have yet to issue statements explaining how they are balancing travel warnings with guest demand and operational logistics.

Other destinations impacted by cruise line itinerary changes

The decision to drop Manzanillo isn’t the first time cruise lines have altered schedules due to safety concerns.

Royal Caribbean previously suspended port calls to Labadee, Haiti, for several months in 2024, citing civil unrest and safety concerns near the private beach destination.

Although Labadee is a private destination with controlled access, nearby instability posed a potential risk to guest safety.

Similarly, in 2023, several cruise lines removed stops in Mazatlán, Mexico, from itineraries following reports of violence in the area. Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Holland America Line adjusted routes to avoid the city temporarily until conditions improved.

The safety of guests and crew members is a top priority for cruise lines, which closely monitor global security developments and follow recommendations from government agencies, such as the US State Department and international travel authorities.

While Royal Caribbean has stepped back from offering itineraries to Manzanillo, its website still highlights the city’s appeal, with mentions of golden beaches, emerald rainforests, and a lively fishing harbour.

However, the company’s shift away from this Pacific Coast port suggests a recalibration of strategy in light of safety concerns.

Other destinations in Mexico remain part of Royal Caribbean’s offerings, such as Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and Cozumel, which are considered safer for travellers.

Carnival Premier Cruise Perks Shift To New Format, Sparking Loyal Casino Passenger Uncertainty

Carnival Cruise Line has made adjustments to its Premier Cruise program, sparking discussions among frequent cruisers who enjoy the perks tied to their casino activity.

Carnival Casino

Traditionally, the Premier program offered exclusive sailings with benefits like welcome and goodbye gifts, premier boarding, free drinks while gaming, and access to private prize drawings.

Recent changes mean Premier benefits can now be enjoyed on any sailing, rather than solely on dedicated group sailings.

However, this adjustment also results in some perks being restructured or eliminated, such as exclusive drawings for Premier guests.

Changes explained and passenger reactions

Guests raised concerns about the changes after noticing fewer perks and lack of communication.

One cruiser took to Facebook to inquire about the shift, prompting Carnival’s Brand Ambassador John Heald to explain the update.

“We adjusted the way Premier works earlier this year, with guests being able to now book a Premier experience on any sailing, not just as part of a group,”

John Heald, Brand Ambassador, Carnival Cruise Line

Heald clarified that while traditional Premier group sailings with all perks will still be available into 2025, Premier guests on standard sailings will experience some differences.

These include the removal of exclusive drawings, though Heat Wave and Fireball Raffle promotions now offer Premier guests double prize money if selected.

The program remains popular among Carnival’s casino enthusiasts, who earn points by using their Sail & Sign card at slot machines or table games.

However, other changes, such as the removal of a $25 FunPlay credit for Diamond and Platinum guests earlier this year, have raised questions about the future of Carnival’s casino benefits.

Despite passenger frustrations over changes made without notice, such as the recent increases in pricing for drinks packages and WiFi, Carnival continues to refine its offerings in an effort to balance benefits and experiences across its fleet.

Unique and Strange Cruise Ships That Were Never Built

Cruise lines continue to build and add new features on cruise ships that were once unheard of. However, not every idea and proposed cruise ship has been built. From a mile long ship to Titanic II, here are the some of the most unique cruise ships that were never built.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up
The 60.000 passenger Freedom Ship

The Freedom Ship is a nearly mile long cruise ship that can carry 60,000 passengers. The ship itself would be able to accommodate an incredible 100,000 people at a time (40,000 residents, 30,000 daily visitors, 20,000 full time crew members, and 10,000 overnight hotel guests).

The idea behind the ship was for it to spend two years at a time circumnavigating the globe, visiting ports and countries all around the world.

You can read more about the Freedom Ship here.

Carnival’s Project Pinnacle

Carnival Cruise Line’s Project Pinnacle was a radical design for a cruise ship that was years ahead of its time. The project started in 2004 and ended up being scrapped. The ships would have been the world’s largest at the time at over 200,000 gross tons.

One of the really cool features on the ship was a people mover system to quickly take people all around the vessel.

There was a proposed lazy river and the aft of the ship was split, an idea that Royal Caribbean ended up using for their Oasis class ships.

You can read more about Carnival Cruise Line’s Project Pinnacle here.

The proposed Titanic II

RMS Titanic is the most well known ship of all time. When an Australian Billionaire proposed building Titanic II around 12 years ago, it made news all around the world.

However, it was likely nothing more than a publicity stunt. The launch of the ship kept getting pushed back, from 2016 to 2018, and then 2022. However, work on the ship never began and Blue Star Line keeps delivering false promises.

This past spring, they once again said that the project was moving forward. Nine months later, they haven’t said a word about the ship since. However, they did update their website during this time.

Titanic II would have been built as close to the original as possible with everything from first to third class cabins. New modern safety equipment, navigation methods, and technology would have been integrated into the ship.

They even created a video of what life would be like on Titanic II that racked up 3.5 million views on YouTube.

You can watch the watch the video below:

While the first three projects mentioned in this article are dead and the ships won’t be built, a shipyard has proposed another incredible cruise ship that is currently just a prototype. Since the ship has some insane features, I thought it would be a good addition to the article.

Meyer Werft unveiled a 430,000 gross ton prototype cruise ship that would likely carry between 12-15,000 passengers. Due to its enormous size and port limitations, it will likely never be built.

I had the opportunity to see a model of the ship at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami a few years ago. You can see photos of Project Trimaran here.

Cruise Passenger Arrested Upon Disembarkation Due To Unpaid Child Support

A cruise passenger, Dominic Weaver, was arrested in Miami, Florida, after disembarking a cruise ship just before Christmas, ending more than a decade of evading authorities for unpaid child support.

Port of Miami

The 47-year-old Kentucky man reportedly owes over $100,000 in back payments and had multiple child support cases pending in Jefferson County.

He’s been on the run for around 10 years due to the money he owed. Authorities took Weaver into custody without incident.

The cruise line and specific ship he sailed on have not been disclosed, though it’s noted the cruise line was not involved in the arrest.

A news report shows a Carnival ship but it’s not been confirmed whether that was the cruise line he sailed with.

Investigations into passenger identification likely facilitated his capture, as the child support agents flew out from Louisville to Miami in order to apprehend Weaver.

Weaver has since been flown back to Louisville, where he awaits arraignment on January 6, 2025.

Cruise ship arrests highlight broader legal risks

Weaver’s arrest is one of several recent incidents involving cruise passengers being detained for legal issues.

In other cases, travellers have faced charges for crimes committed onboard or unrelated warrants discovered during disembarkation.

On MSC Magnifica in August 2024, four passengers were arrested for using fraudulent credit cards in the ship’s casino during a four-day Bahamas cruise.

Security quickly detected the scam, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection took the individuals into custody upon the ship’s return to Miami.

In a separate incident on MSC Seascape in October 2024, a mother and son were arrested following a heated altercation with an elderly passenger in the ship’s theatre shortly after departing PortMiami.

Similarly, in September 2024, a passenger aboard Freedom of the Seas was arrested after docking in Florida, accused of assaulting another guest during the voyage – though this one was apparently a case of mistaken identity.

Authorities are pushing for Weaver’s previous probation to be revoked, with potential prison time replacing it.

Meanwhile, guests embarking on cruises are reminded to adhere to legal and local regulations, as they may face consequences both domestically and abroad.

And if you owe huge sums of money, maybe taking a cruise (and getting your named flagged on authority IT systems) is a bad idea…

Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral Sets Sail After Multi-Million-Pound Dry Dock Refurbishment

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral has welcomed her first guests aboard after completing a comprehensive multi-million-pound dry dock refurbishment at A&P Falmouth.

Balmoral in Dry Dock 2024

The ship underwent a two-week maintenance programme beginning on 1st December, during which significant upgrades were made both inside and out.

Onboard, the upgrades included the renovation of several cabins and bathrooms, a technical refurbishment of the Neptune Lounge, and the transformation of the former Palms Café into the new Thistle Restaurant.

The refurbished buffet venue now features a redesigned layout, refreshed seating areas, and updated buffet and drinks stations, making it the most significant internal project of the dry dock.

The ship’s WiFi capabilities were also enhanced to provide a more seamless experience for guests.

Externally, Balmoral underwent an ultra-high-pressure water blast of her underwater hull, received a coating of silicone antifouling paint to improve fuel efficiency, and had new propellers and bow thrusters installed.

A commitment to sustainability and local partnerships

Fred. Olsen CEO Samantha Stimpson highlighted the environmental and operational benefits of the dry dock.

“This has been an incredibly successful dry dock programme, allowing us to not only conduct important maintenance but also make some exciting enhancements for our guests – most notably our beautiful new buffet restaurant.

“The application of antifouling silicone paint to Balmoral’s hull will enable us to use less fuel, and teamed with other improvements we have made, including the upgrading of our propeller and stabilisers, will allow us to sail more efficiently and sustainably, whilst continuing to offer a comfortable and enjoyable experience on board.”

Fred. Olsen CEO Samantha Stimpson

A workforce of more than 700 people, including 350 Fred. Olsen crew and 30 apprentices from A&P Falmouth, helped complete the programme.

“Contracts such as these make a significant economic contribution to the prosperity of the UK and help support our workforce and apprenticeship programme. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines over the months and years to come.”

A&P Falmouth CEO David McGinley

Balmoral’s upgrades position her to offer guests an even more enjoyable and environmentally friendly cruising experience as she sets sail on her next adventure.

Windstar Cruises' new ship, Star Seeker

Windstar Cruises is launching a new class of cruise ships in 2025 with Star Seeker. The new ship will debut in December 2025 and offer cruises to the Caribbean in early 2026.

Due to unprecedented demand for cruises on Star Seeker, Windstar Cruises has opened sailings in the spring of 2027 for bookings earlier than planned.

The ship’s first season in Japan nearly sold out in just a few months after the sailings opened for bookings.

Now, the ship will stay in Japan for 2027 on 10-night Grand Japan itineraries that sail from Tokyo to Kyoto. The cruises will also make a port stop in Busan, South Korea.

Grand Japan highlights include:

  • Scenic cruising the Inland Sea
  • Sailing around the abandoned island of Hashim
  • Visiting the Peace Memorial Parks of Nagasaki and Hiroshima
  • Calls on smaller ports like Takamatsu (famous for its gardens and Udon) and Karatsu, including its incredible castle

Land extensions will also be available that include inland tours to Kyoto and the potential to see Japan’s famed cherry blossoms in the spring.

The will ship head to Japan in September 2026 after a season in Alaska.

Windstar Cruises’ Chief Commercial Officer Janet Bava, gave the following statement:

“Just months after announcing our 2026 plans in Japan, we’re nearly sold out. The combination of our return to Asia for the first time since 2023, along with the anticipation of a new ship and the fact that Japan is now one of the world’s most visited countries, has created an excitement for this region that we have not seen before.”

The cruise line is offering an early booking offer that includes complimentary upgrades to all-inclusive fares.  It includes:

  • WiFi

  • Unlimited drinks
  • $200 in on board credit per cabin

False Alarm Aboard Carnival Ship As Teen Briefly Declared Missing Is Reunited With Family

A potentially alarming situation on Carnival Celebration was resolved after a 17-year-old passenger who went missing on the first night of the cruise was found safe.

The image shows a Carnival cruise ship, "Carnival Celebration," docked in Miami with the city skyline in the background. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow over the high-rise buildings and the water, creating a scenic and vibrant atmosphere.

The teen had reportedly fallen asleep in another cabin, prompting an early morning search on 23rd December 2024.

The Excel-class cruise ship, currently on a 7-night Christmas-themed Western Caribbean sailing from Miami, Florida, was midway through its first night when announcements were made alerting guests and crew of the missing teen.

Crew members swiftly enacted emergency protocols, including an exhaustive search of the ship and interviews with the missing teen’s travel companions.

Fortunately, the youth was located within the vessel, and an announcement confirmed their safe reunion with family later that day.

Missing persons on cruise ships remain rare

Modern cruise ships are equipped with advanced security measures, including extensive surveillance systems and trained security teams, making missing persons cases onboard exceptionally rare.

Over the past 20 years, it is estimated that approximately 10-20 passengers per year go missing from cruise ships – a very small number compared to the millions who cruise annually.

However the fact that announcements had to be made over the ship’s systems show that this wasn’t just a brief case of a teen wandering off for a few minutes, and there was enough concern that something seriously bad could’ve happened.

Carnival Celebration’s quick resolution reflects the efficacy of such safety protocols.

Following the incident, the teen and their family were able to continue enjoying their cruise, which features stops in Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Roatan.
