12-Year-Old Boy Dies On Harmony of the Seas Following Balcony Fall

A 12-year-old boy fell from a balcony on the most recent Harmony of the Seas cruise, and has tragically died.

Central Park on Harmony of the Seas

The boy fell from an interior balcony overlooking Central Park. The ship was on the last night of a seven-day Caribbean cruise, heading to Galveston, Texas.

People in the Central Park atrium at the time reported hearing a loud noise and then seeing the boy on the ground. Medical assistance arrived quickly, but sadly, the boy could not be saved.

Royal Caribbean has expressed their condolences to the family and is cooperating with the investigation.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our guests. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share”

Royal Caribbean spokesperson

As a result of the incident, the cruise line wrote to guests on the following cruise to inform them that boarding would be delayed, asking for understanding from guests.

Two other boys have died falling from balconies on Oasis-class ships, including one 16-year-old on Harmony of the Seas in 2019. He was attempting to climb into his stateroom via the balcony when he fell.

Another 16-year-old fell from an interior balcony on Allure of the Seas in November 2023.

Carnival cruise ship

Multi-device WiFi plans are something that most cruise lines offer, including Carnival’s sister cruise lines Princess Cruises and Holland America Line.

Now, Carnival has added this plan and now has a total of four different WiFi options to choose from.  The cruise line tested this multi-device plan on a few cruise ships and it is now available across their fleet.

The cost is $75.00 per day and is good for up to four devices. It includes Carnival’s Premium WiFi plan for the fastest speeds on the ship. It is three times faster than the Value Plan.

It supports video and music streaming, Skype, and Zoom and Teams video calling.

This package must be purchased before midnight the day before embarkation. It is not available to be purchased on the ship like most of the cruise line’s WiFi plans.

Guests sailing on Carnival cruise ships can now buy multi-device WiFi plans.

The other three packages that Carnival Cruise Line offers for WiFi are as follows. All three can be purchased prior to the cruise or once on the ship. A discount is given if a guests purchases it prior to their cruise.

Carnival’s Social Plan costs $18.00 per day and gives access to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok, Pinterest, X, Reddit, LinkedIn, and major airline sites.  A pre-cruise discount drops the price to $15.30 per day if purchased prior to the cruise.

Carnival’s Value Plan costs $23.00 per day and includes access to all websites except for sites blocked under the Carnival Fair Use Policy (adult content, violent content, etc.).  A pre-cruise discount drops the price to $19.55 per day.

Carnival’s Premium Plan costs $25.00 per day and offers the fastest experience possible. It allows guests to stream movies, video chat, monitor your home and browse the web seamlessly. This includes apps like Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, FaceTime, Zoom, and Ring where coverage allow. A pre-cruise discount drops the price to $21.25 per day.

These three plans only allow for one device at a time to be connected.

FaceTime is only available with the Value and Premium Plans.

Sir Richard Branson Delights Passengers Across Virgin Voyages with Unforgettable Experiences

Sir Richard Branson recently embarked on a series of adventures with his Virgin Voyages cruise line, helping to delight guests onboard a range of Celebration Voyages.

Richard Branson Virgin Voyages

It all culminated on Scarlet Lady, cruising from Barcelona, where he danced alongside Australian Olympic breakdancer Raygun (before jumping into the pool with her).

Boy George was also onboard to host some DJ sets, while Virgin Galactic astronauts were on-hand to give talks and offer stargazing experiences.

But prior to this, Sir Richard had visited the two other ships currently sailing in the Virgin fleet to oversea some weddings.

He oversaw the wedding of a British couple on Valiant Lady in the Dominican Republic, before flying to Amsterdam to board Resilient Lady.

Here, he officiated the wedding of two Virgin Voyages crew members, Alejandra and Matias.

He then headed to Spain to meet Scarlet Lady, and with the ship spending an overnight in Ibiza, Sir Richard was witness to a third wedding in just a week.

The stunt was designed to promote the new wedding packages that are available with Virgin Voyages from April 2025. Guests will be able to book either a destination wedding or a wedding onboard the ships.

The wedding stunt coincided with the special Celebration Voyages, with special guests across the fleet to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Virgin Group.

Carnival Reminds Passengers of Dress Code Violation That Could Spell Big Trouble

While cruise lines have adapted their dress code policies over the last couple decades, there are still a few basic rules that get overlooked on every cruise.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Carnival Dress code Camo in Bahamas ban

Whether it’s flip-flops in the main dining room or bathrobes at the buffet, it’s not uncommon to spot a cruiser in vacation mode, flouting the rules.

But there are some dress code rules that are based on the ports of call a cruise ship is visiting.

And there’s one major mistake American cruise passengers often make when visiting the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Camouflage clothing is not permitted in many of these areas.  This rule applies when passengers are off the ship, so it has nothing to do with the cruise line.

John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador, recently reminded his social media followers of this in a Facebook post.

“Having just replied to a gentleman his ‘anger’ about being told to return to the Ship in Nassau, Bahamas I felt it best to remind everybody that there are some places that absolutely do not allow camouflage clothing, military style camouflage clothing, to be worn there.  These are the Island’s rules and we have absolutely no control over them,” Heald wrote.

Read more: 10 things you’re not supposed to wear on a cruise

People wearing camo clothing

The reason for the rule is that these areas of the world don’t want a civilian to be confused as military.  Someone wearing camo pants or even a camo bag can be thought of as impersonating military personnel.

There are almost 20 countries in the world that have a ban on civilians wearing camouflage clothing.

What’s the penalty if you wear camo anyway?

I wouldn’t recommend this, but if you are spotted you will face either a fine, imprisonment, or both.  There have been reports of a $500 fine in some cases.

Heald concluded his post on the issue with this anecdote:

“I remember once when I was on a ship, I saw a chap wearing a camouflage and shorts so I bumped into him just so it made him feel like it worked.  He didn’t laugh.”

One of the comments on the post gave a helpful reminder that the camo ban is not just reserved for clothing.

“I remember this from my first cruise, which was like 2003, I believe Barbados and many other islands banned all forms of camo, including that camo hat, the grunt style shirts, anything realtree, even came shorts, and shoes are banned. Keep in mind camo isn’t just wearing military camo, but any kind of camo,” the comment said.

Lee Mason Promoted to Fleet Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Line

Lee Mason, a well-known and beloved Carnival Cruise Director, has been promoted to Fleet Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Line.

Lee Mason Fleet Cruise Director

This news comes following Chris Williams’ departure from the position in early August.

Mason, who joined Carnival in November 2016, has served on numerous ships including Carnival Valor, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Miracle, Carnival Glory, and Mardi Gras. He was also the first cruise director for Carnival Celebration and recently worked on Carnival Venezia.

In his new role, Mason will train new cruise directors, develop engaging activities and events onboard, and participate in special ceremonies for new ships. He shared the news with his over 65,000 social media followers, expressing his excitement about the promotion.

The Fleet Cruise Director role was created by Carnival Cruise Line two years ago. Mason joins Mike Pack, Chris “Donkey” Salazar and Erin Weigand in the role.

Chris Williams, Mason’s predecessor, was a prominent figure at Carnival for 13 years. He began as a singer and eventually became a Fleet Cruise Director.

His departure was significant, and Mason’s promotion is viewed positively for the cruise line. Williams was known for his innovative ideas and strong emphasis on guest satisfaction, leaving a lasting impact at Carnival.

The announcement of Mason’s promotion has generated considerable buzz on social media. Guests and followers are excited and supportive, eagerly anticipating the new initiatives Mason will bring to Carnival Cruise Line.

Cruise Line Makes Change to Motorized Scooter Policy Over Safety Concerns

A cruise line has issued a policy update for guests who require a powered mobility device that went into effect over the past week. This applies to electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters and power add-ons.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Cunard ship Queen Victoria

Cunard Line, one of nine cruise lines from Carnival Corporation, changed their Powered Mobility Device Policy on September 3, 2024.

From now on, if a guests requires a powered mobility device, they will only be allowed to book a cabin that is a fully accessible stateroom or one of the selected Grill Suites.

Cabins on Cunard’s deck plans that can accommodate a powered mobility device will have a triangle symbol on them.

Why did the cruise line make this change? They said it was to further ensure the safety of guests and crew.

Cunard said that when it comes to mobility devices, they regularly review their policies relating to storage and charging instructions, failure responses, and fire safety procedures.

If a guest did not book an accessible cabin and they need an electric mobility device, they will be denied boarding at their own expense.

Guests will also need to notify the cruise line with any mobility requirements via the “On board needs questionnaire” that is available on MyCunard.

In the cruise line’s FAQ, the following is listed:

“As a reminder, any guest who uses a wheelchair or powered mobility device, whether full or part-time, must be allocated an evacuation chair at the time of booking. If a guest’s circumstances change and an evacuation chair is required after the time of booking, please know that this is subject to availability.

If there is no evacuation chair available, the guest will not be able to sail on that voyage and will need to refer to their travel insurance.”

Manual wheelchairs will continue to be allowed in all cabins on Cunard cruise ships as long as they comply with the cruise line’s policies.

A PDF with FAQs about this change from Cunard can be read on the cruise line’s website here.

Royal Caribbean Changes Their Logo

Royal Caribbean, the world’s largest cruise line, has updated their logo to give it a more modern look.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up

Royal Caribbean is removing the yellow and the word International from their logo. They are also replacing the Navy Blue (PMS 281) with a new, brighter Navy Blue (PMS 2748).

The new logo with their signature Crown & Anchor can be seen below:

Royal Caribbean’s new modern logo

They have also revised their Crown & Anchor symbol. It will be just the top half of their new logo without the words “Royal Caribbean”.

This is a change from this logo that they have been using:

Royal Caribbean gave the following reason for making this change:

“The most powerful brands in the world have an icon. A brand symbol that they are known for. Ours is the Crown & Anchor — and further elevating this symbol is one of the key goals for our brand.

“As we continue this journey to elevate our brand in the larger vacation landscape, it’s time to elevate the Crown & Anchor by simplifying the complex elements around it.

“A new modernized logo design unleashes the Crown & Anchor from the previous logo while presenting the Royal Caribbean name with modern, yet timeless typography.”

Royal Caribbean said that they began to make the change on September 5 but both logos may be visible in market at the same time during the transition.
