How Much Cruise Ship Photographers Make (From Self-Professed Former Crew Member)

How much someone gets paid for any given job is always a rather personal question.  But many cruisers have been curious about certain cruise ship jobs, namely the job of being a photographer on a giant vessel.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

After all, it appears to be a demanding position.  On mainstream cruise lines the ship is teeming with photographers in the evenings, especially on formal nights – that is, on ships where formal nights are still “a thing”.

Mahogany Bay, Carnival Celebration ship in port, sandy beach

A recent social media post revealed an answer to this question after another user on Reddit showed interest in the job.

A self-professed former photographer with Norwegian Cruise Line, who used the online alias pdx-Psych, detailed their own pay structure after 3 contracts with the company.

Gallery photographers, the entry-level position, can expect to make around “$1100-$1300 a month,” the user explained. With long hours factored in, often exceeding 60 per week, that pay can fall below minimum wage.

A path to higher wages

However, there is a path to higher earnings. Cruise lines offer photo lab and management positions with better salaries.

“These pay on commission and if you are doing well getting appointments and selling your work, it’s more common to earn around 2.5-4K a month, the higher end being a very good month, and you are able to work a flexible schedule.” pdx-Psych noted, with top performers reaching even higher.

Experience vs. money: a trade-off

The social media post highlighted the trade-off that many cruise ship photographers make.

“It’s not just about the money (which you will save very quickly by not paying for room and board), it’s about the experience. I will tell you there is no monetary value you could put on the experience” they wrote, adding “it is one of a kind. I met my wife while working ships.”

There is a definite uniqueness about the lifestyle of a cruise ship photographer.  Seeing the world by not paying a dime in room and board is especially attractive to a younger demographic.

But for those focused on salary, there has to be a mindset ready for long, demanding hours.

I always admire the creativity and energy of these hard-working members of the crew, and even though I’ve been cruising for over 15 years, I still try to buy at least a few photos on each cruise if I’m able.

A starting point for some photographers

Lightstalking.com, a website dedicated to photography, acknowledges the reality some photographers face while at sea.

While the field is looked down on by “more ‘snobbish’ elements of the photographic industry”, the author, Jason Row, argues it can be a valuable steppingstone for aspiring photographers.

According Row, the experience of working on a ship for 10 years taught him not only how to be a better photographer but how to manage a business as well.

“Most photographers working at sea are technically freelance. You are contracted by a photography agency to take images for a set period of time,” Row stated, adding that “pay is usually done on a commissions basis by rank.”

For many crew members, cruise ship photography offers the chance to gain valuable experience in areas like working under pressure and interacting with people.

However, Lightstalking.com also paints a realistic picture of the job’s demands. Long hours, seven days a week, with limited free time to explore ports, are the norm.

Bottom Line

Cruise ship photography offers an adventurous experience with the potential for decent pay, but it comes at a cost. Long hours, demanding schedules, and the pressure to meet sales quotas may be a turn-off for some.

According to pdx-Pysch, the photo shoots that took place in various cruise ports offered more freedom of expression and creativity.

“Imagine, we get paid to take people on little tours through the gardens of Capri or the beaches of the Bahamas and have a fun time doing a photoshoot all the while. For me, I’m still amazed I got paid to do that,” the Reddit user stated.

Coolest Job In The World? Expedition Photographer Shares Antarctica Highlights

An expedition cruise photographer has picked 15 of his favourite images taken over the last six months while sailing with HX.

HX Photography

Kay Fochtmann, 42, has been travelling on a series of sailings with HX and has enjoyed some incredible experiences, capturing the beauty of the scenery and wildlife around Antarctica.

The Antarctic landscape itself is breathtaking. It feels truly otherworldly, and no photo can truly do it justice. Add into the mix Leopard Seals, Gentoo Penguins, and Humpback Whales to that landscape to name a few and it becomes a true paradise for wildlife photographers with manyspecies that can only be observed in Antarctica.

It’s an explosion for the senses. The human eye and mind are not used to seeing a desert of ice and icebergs the height of high-rises on a day-to-day basis, so we have no comparison. During my first voyage as an onboard photographer, I felt what many guests felt; gratitude to the point of tears. Everything was so unbelievably beautiful.

Kay Fochtmann

Here’s a look at the 15 images he has chosen:

HX Yawning Leopard Seal

Yawning Leopard Seal. The Leopard Seal is one of the two Apex predators (the other being the Orca) of Antarctica and the only seal that hunts warm-blooded animals like penguins and other seals! We were on Pléneau Island, and I was leading the Photo Adventure small boat cruising that we offer and together with six lucky guests I pressed the shutter when the Leopard seal finally showed its razor-sharp teeth.

HX MS Fridtjof Nansen

MS Fridtjof Nansen’s first ever sea ice landing. Guests and crew waited for this moment for quite a few days! Finally, Captain Raymond Martinsen found a spot in a channel called “The Gullet” and put the ship straight into sea ice and guests could walk around. A phenomenal experience for guests and crew alike!

HX Antarctica Ice Sheet

Another sea ice landing, this time on a free-floating sea ice sheet that could only be accessed by the Zodiac. What a surreal experience to walk on a single ice sheet in the middle of Antarctic waters surrounded by ice.

HX Antarctica Gentoo Penguin

Penguins jumping onto Icebergs or down into the water after taking a rest on them is always a rewarding photo opportunity. This Gentoo Penguin decided to take a dive close to Cuverville Island in this photo.

HX Antarctica Humpback Whale

Sometimes you need luck on your side.  This young Humpback Whale continued to slap his fluke on the water surface for about 20 mins and some lucky guests and I were out on the Zodiac at the right time! Did you know that the shape and pattern of the fluke of a humpback whale is as unique as a fingerprint? Photos of humpback whales’ fluxes helps to identify individuals and their migration patterns.

HX Antarctica Neko Harbour Penguins

Two Gentoo Penguins resting on a small iceberg in Neko Harbour after taking a dive. I have two approaches for my penguin photography. I either look out for the cleanest penguins like these two for a perfect Antarctic scenario or I try to find the one that is most covered in mud and embracing its surroundings.

HX Antarctica Gentoo Penguin Chick

Like this Gentoo Penguin Chick at a colony at Damoy Point which seems like it has surrendered to its fate. There is not much they can do. The penguin chicks can’t yet clean themselves in the water because their down feathers are not waterproof, and they must wait until they get their juvenile plumage.

Photo adventure cruising between Icebergs in Pléneau Bay. The area just out of the Lemaire Channel offers one of the most spectacular small-boat-cruises that you can do in Antarctica. The reason for this is that Icebergs of all sizes float into the bay and get stuck and become grounded. Therefore, the bay is known as the ‘Iceberg Graveyard’.

HX Antarctica Iceberg

When the light is right in Antarctica it offers a spectacular view to what lies underneath the water surface. The part of an iceberg above the water level is usually only 10 percent of its complete size!

HX Antarctica Desert

For me, this image symbolizes perfectly why Antarctica is defined as a polar desert!

HX Antarctic Fur Seal

Antarctic Fur Seal resting on an iceberg. Due to relatively low exposure to humans, wildlife in Antarctica is pretty chilled or even curious about us humans. This guy just woke up from a nap.

HX Antarctica Glacier

Antarctica is a perfect example as to why some images require an object to give it scale! Without the small boat it would be impossible to tell the size of the iceberg behind it.

HX Pléneau Bay

Guests marvel at the wall of Glacier in front of them in. I also used them to give some scale for the viewer.

HX Two Adélie Penguins

Two Adélie Penguins perfectly aligned next to each other. Photographing penguins can be quite overwhelming. At first, they all look alike and there are usually so many standing in a small space closely together, so you don’t know what to look for.

I try to see if I can spot some that are standing out from the crowd. These two with their beautiful pattern almost in sync made for a great image.

HX Fur Seals

Two juvenile male Antarctic Fur Seals play fighting at Deception Island. This way the young seals learn how to fight off rivals for when they must protect their breeding territory site when they are adults.

Crew Member Arrested After Attacking Passenger And Other Crew

A crew member has been arrested onboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship after attacking three security crew members, a nurse and a female passenger.

NCL

On 6 May 2024, Ntando Sogoni, a new crew member from South Africa, tried to deploy a lifeboat from the ship for no clear reason.

Sogoni had only joined the ship the day before, and his unusual behaviour alerted the security team onboard who escorted him to the medical centre for a physical and mental assessment.

Mr. Sogoni, in a sudden outburst, assaulted both a security guard and a male nurse.

The altercation continued, moving to another room where a 75-year-old female passenger was unfortunately injured with medical scissors. Her injuries, while serious, were non-life-threatening and involved her arm, hand, and face.

Sogoni injured two more security team members as he was detained, where he was kept in the ship’s jail. He was then arrested in Juneau, Alaska the following day and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

Norwegian Encore, like most modern cruise ships, is equipped with comprehensive surveillance systems and an experienced onboard security team ready to intervene at a moment’s notice.

The ship’s security protocols and the crew’s training are designed to mitigate any potential threats, ensuring the safety and security of all passengers and staff.

Norwegian Encore’s itinerary and onboard experiences have not been affected by the incident. The names of the injured passenger and crew members have not been revealed.

Expedition Cruise Line Undertakes Groundbreaking Research In Antarctica

HX, the cruise expedition specialists, has joined forces with an esteemed researcher to study the ocean floor of Antarctica.

HX Underwater Drone

The cruise line worked with Dr. Manuel Novillo for a project titled “Exploring the Unseen”, working from the ship MS Roald Amundsen.

The aims were to explore the secrets of the Antarctic Ocean floor, finding spawning grounds for overexploited fish species and looking at opportunities for further research projects in future.

This was done through the use of underwater drones, setting new company records for deep diving in Orne Harbour across 16 deployments during January and February.

Even more exciting is that guests were able to take part in the drone deployments, helping to make their cruise experience feel even more special as they contributed to the research project.

This research goes beyond science communication; it’s about making a real impact…I’m thrilled to see our underwater drones utilised to their full potential, contributing to a project that holds immense promise.

Dr. Verena Meraldi, Chief Scientist at HX

MS Roald Amundsen has its own state-of-the-art Science Center onboard, which helped to provide the platform needed for the research to be carried out successfully and made for some fascinating experiences for the guests onboard.

HX, formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions, is the leading expedition cruise line with over 250 destinations sailed to in more than 30 countries across the world.

The cruise line is also on a mission to be the world’s most sustainable expedition company, being the first cruise line to ban heavy fuel oil and single-use plastics, and launching the world’s first battery hybrid-powered ship.

Cruise Ship Crew Member Arrested After Allegedly Stabbing 3 People with Scissors

A Norwegian Cruise Line crew member was arrested in Juneau, Alaska on Tuesday, after allegedly stabbing three people while on the ship, Norwegian Encore.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

Norwegian Encore docked in port

According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the man stabbed two security guards and a woman with a pair of scissors.

The incident occurred late on Sunday night when other crew members spotted the man trying to deploy a lifeboat on the ship.

After this erratic behavior, the security guards attempted to bring the man to the medical center so he could be evaluated.

It was while he was in the medical center and the ship was at sea, sailing off the coast of Canada, that the man tried to leave the medical facility.

He allegedly attacked a guard and a nurse before running to another room and grabbing scissors, which he used as a weapon. The affidavit states he stabbed a woman in the medical facility who was being examined, in addition to two guards who were trying to detain him.

The woman was stabbed several times in the arm, hand and face. The security guards sustained stab wounds to the head, back, and shoulders.

The injuries sustained are reportedly non-life threatening.

According to reports, the 35-year-old man from South Africa was a recent hire by the cruise line and just joined the ship on Saturday when the vessel was docked in Seattle.

The man was arrested while Norwegian Encore was visiting Juneau, Alaska.  Before his arrest, the man was detained in “cruise jail”.

The man is charged with “assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Alaska.

If he is convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to CruiseMapper, Norwegian Encore is currently on a 7-day round-trip sailing out of Seattle.

Before a crew member is hired, cruise lines conduct thorough background checks that include criminal records, employment history, and various references.

Most cruise lines require that any crew member working with children undergo a background check at least every two years.

Additionally, after hiring, the crew undergo training to get them ready for their job on the ship.

The cause of this man’s actions are not clear, but this article will be updated as more is known.

The FBI and Coast Guard Investigative Service are investigating the case.

Cruise Lines with the Cheapest 7-Day Cruises Out of Florida: Average Price Comparison

Florida’s cruise industry is booming, and ships are filling up fast.  This breakdown sheds some light onto which cruise lines are offering the lowest average rates from the state’s cruise ports.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

PortMiami. Photo Credit: Cruise Fever

Over the next two years, more than 1,700 cruises with a 7-day duration will depart from one of the three major cruise ports in Florida: Port Miami, Port Everglades, and Port Canaveral.

These bustling ports are the juggernauts of the cruise industry.  In fact, most cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean depart from one of these cruise ports.

The pricing for these cruises includes the following data that was derived from Cruise Plum (no affiliation or sponsorship):

  • Base fare for two passengers per cabin
  • Balcony staterooms
  • Taxes and fees
  • Gratuities for two

While advertised prices for these sailings might be much lower, it’s important to remember that this data includes the “all in” cost, those hidden fees that often get overlooked.

The prices would be much lower with interior staterooms as well, but since balcony cabins are the most commonly chosen category it worked better for this purpose.

Note: Remember, the data in this article is ONLY from 7-day cruise durations.   Cruises with a longer or shorter duration were not included to keep all the numbers more in line with each other.

The prices below reflect the average price for each cruise line with sailings offered from that specific port.

Below is the average price over the course of 2 years that a balcony cabin for two will cost for each cruise line out of PortMiami (taxes, fees, and gratuities included).

  • Norwegian Cruise Line: 89
  • Disney Cruise Line: 60
  • Celebrity Cruises: 44
  • MSC Cruises: 38

Port Everglades

Below is the average price over the course of 2 years that a balcony cabin for two will cost for each cruise line out of Port Everglades (taxes, fees, and gratuities included).

Cruise lines listed in order from lowest price to highest.

You may notice that Carnival, MSC, and Norwegian are not listed as they do currently sail from Port Everglades.  Disney does sail out of the port but only offers 3- , 4-, and 5-night sailings.

  • Royal Caribbean International: $3,092
  • Celebrity Cruises: $3,109
  • Princess Cruises: $3,113
  • Holland America Line: $3,119

From now until April of 2026 these are the number of 7-day cruises these cruise lines will offer out of Port Everglades, Florida:

  • Princess Cruises: 99
  • Holland America: 71
  • Celebrity Cruises: 64
  • Royal Caribbean: 18

Note: Pricing in the cruise industry is in constant flux.  These were the prices at the time of research, but they can change at any time.

Method used for this analysis

I analyzed every cruise that departs from the cruise ports listed above, looking at every cruise that sails from now until 2026.

I then took the average price for each cruise line (across all ships that sail from that port) and compared these prices with every other cruise line.

My initial goal in analyzing this data was to see the price differences between cruise lines.

I knew MSC Cruises would be the most affordable, but by how much?

To do this required the best attempt at an apples-to-apples comparison.

So, I only looked at 7-day cruises for this comparison.  Often a 14-day cruise or even a multi-week voyage can have a cheaper price per day, but I wanted to keep things consistent.

I realize this is not a perfect comparison. Things like seasonality, the newness of cruise ships at any given port, and a skewed number of cruises between each company can slant these numbers in either direction.

Still, it gives a good idea of how prices compare between major cruise lines.

Bottom Line

This deep dive into Florida’s cruise line costs reveals some clear winners for budget-minded travelers. MSC Cruises and Carnival consistently offer fantastic value, especially for those who prioritize cost over inclusions.

But remember, the perfect cruise isn’t just about price. Consider your travel style – are you seeking endless activities or a more relaxed atmosphere?  This data is a springboard to building your cruise budget and finding the line that aligns best with your preferences.

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for last-minute deals and promotions that can offer a much lower price than the average costs listed here.

Finally, factor in what’s included. While Virgin Voyages might cost more upfront, extras like Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and fitness classes are bundled in, potentially making it a better value than it seems at first glance.
