5 Reasons I Check Cruise Ship Deck Plans Before Picking a Cabin

After 50 cruises, I’ve been in some less-than-ideal cabin locations.

Most of the time, cabins with excessive noise and weirdly positioned balconies could have been avoided if I just checked the deck plans.

After I learned that deck plans give way more insight into what I could expect from my home away from home on a ship, I now check them before ever selecting my stateroom.

Deck plans on a cruise ship
There are 5 very good reasons to check out those cruise ship deck plans before you pick your cruise cabin.

Picking out your cruise cabin location is the fun part of the booking process.  At least it’s more fun than seeing how much taxes and fees will set you back.

Some cruisers will simply pick a cabin category that’s forward, aft, or mid-ship and be fine without checking anything else.

Before I sign off on that exact cabin, I like to look up the deck plans for the ship.  And there are several things I will look for that I will mention in this post.

Overlooking some key details in the deck plans caused some rather annoying situations in cruises past.

By the way, if you pick a guaranteed fare where the cruise line chooses the stateroom for you in exchange for a few dollars in savings, none of this will apply to you.

1. To avoid interconnecting cabinsstateroom deck plans on cruise ship for choosing cabin

Some cruise cabins have a door between them. This is great if you’re traveling with family and want access to another stateroom without going into the hallway.

However, the space around these interconnecting doors can allow sound to travel through. Cruise lines do a decent job of trying to minimize this, but I’ve noticed on more than one sailing just how much of a difference it makes.

On one particular cruise, I had booked a cabin with a connecting door and could hear even light conversation going on next door in the wee hours of the morning.

Deck plans make it very easy to spot cabins with doorways between them. These are usually marked by a dot or symbol to help group travelers stay together.

I use them to find which cabins to avoid.

2. To see what is directly above or below my cabin

Image of cruise ship from side, top deck as it sails out of port

If you’ve ever had a cabin directly below a live music venue that operates until 1am, you realize the importance of this point.

If you don’t go to bed until 2am or later then maybe this won’t matter as much.  But it could matter in the morning when you’re trying to sleep in.

With a stateroom right below the pool deck you might hear the scraping of deck chairs being placed into position.  I’ve had this happen on multiple occasions.

When examining deck plans I will look one deck up and one deck below to see if there is a possible venue that could be extra noisy.

Often, I will try to book a cabin on a deck that has a passenger deck both above and below to help minimize this.   And then of course, you just hope you don’t have noisy neighbors.

I should mention that some modern cruise ships have better sound proofing than others.  This has been a problem cruisers have mentioned for years, and the sound dampening technology has gotten better.

3. To check proximity to elevators

cruise ship elevators on Carnival Celebration

This one can go either way.  On some cruises I want to be as close as possible to elevators.  On other cruises where peace and quiet is more important, I will try to avoid bustling areas on the ship.

If you have a disability or you’re using a motorized scooter on board, you might want easy and quick access to the elevators.

Some cruise ships have three main elevator areas, and some only have two – one forward and one aft.  I’ve found that the mid-ship elevator can be the most active on the ship, so if you’re concerned about excessive foot traffic outside your door you might want to avoid this location.

If the cruise ship you’re booking is going to have a more laid-back atmosphere (opposite of a spring break kind of ordeal), having an elevator and stairwell right near your cabin door can certainly make travel around the ship simpler.

And, if you’re the type of cruiser that wants to spend every waking minute doing something around the ship, then find a cabin on those deck plans right near the elevators.

4. To see what kind of obstruction may be outside my balcony

Image of Carnival Celebration cruise ship cabins from the outside

Cabins with obstructed views are clearly labeled and categorized as such on a cruise line’s website.  So, it shouldn’t be a surprise if you end up with one.  But not every obstructed view is created equal.

I’ve had entire lifeboats blocking my ocean view before, and other times the “obstruction” to my view was barely noticeable at all.

Sometimes the deck plans of a cruise ship can give you more insight as to what kind of obstruction you can expect when you walk into your stateroom.  Then you can see if it’s worth the extra savings, since obstructed view cabins are slightly cheaper.

It also helps to see pictures of the outside of the ship too, so you can see a certain area of the ship and what obstructions some cabins can expect.

5. To be closer to the amenities I care about

Everyone has a different style of cruising.  Want to go to the spa every day?  Is being close to the buffet or aft pool important to you?  Is there a certain lounge or venue you know you will want to check out on a regular basis throughout your cruise?

Cruise ship hallways are long — really long.  Having a cabin close to a place you will frequent can make a big difference.

I’ve booked cabins before where I had to walk the entire length of the ship to visit the thermal suite on board and that just wasn’t ideal at all.    After all, when I was done I had to walk the entire length of the ship back to my cabin.

And with modern cruise ships being over 1,000 feet long, that’s a lot of steps.

The counterpoint is that it can help you keep the weight off during a cruise if you have to walk half a mile any time you leave the cabin.

Bottom Line

It might seem like a nerdy thing to do.  But cruise ship deck plans are a must-view before I ever pick out a cabin.  You don’t have to get too in depth.  Just know what you’re getting into.

Why Everyone Should Try It Once

Have you ever thought about cruising solo? While the idea might seem daunting to some, many find it an incredible way to travel. I’ve personally enjoyed several solo cruises and highly recommend it.

As more people discover the joys of travelling alone, cruising emerges as a top choice, particularly for those trying it for the first time. Read on to find out why I think everyone should try it once.

1. It’s an Ideal First Step

If you’re contemplating a solo holiday but unsure where to start, consider a cruise. Due to its simplicity, it’s an ideal introduction to solo travel. Once you’re on board, everything you need, from meals to entertainment and activities, is readily available.

An overhead view of Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas cruise ship sailing the deep blue ocean, featuring a bustling top deck with aqua-colored waterslides, swimming pools, and ample lounging areas for a fun-filled sea day.

This setup is especially comforting if the idea of venturing out alone feels daunting. There’s no need to stress over meal locations, evening entertainment, or navigating late-night transport. Cruising simplifies these aspects, allowing you to focus on enjoying your holiday.

No matter your situation, whether you’re single, seeking alone time, recently widowed, or simply have different holiday preferences from your family or friends, a cruise provides a flexible and supportive environment for all.

2. Complete Control Over Your Schedule

A lady solo travelling looking around a city

One of the best things about solo cruising is it’s all about you!

Fancy watching the sunrise from the top deck? Go for it. Want to spend the afternoon chilling with a book instead of joining a tour? Do what you want.

When you cruise solo, every choice is yours, from which shore excursions take your fancy to the shows you catch in the evening. It’s your holiday, your way. No need to sync schedules with anyone else or compromise on what you want to do. Just freedom to enjoy your cruise at your own pace. How great is that?

And if you’re used to coordinating with family or friends, you’ll appreciate this even more. No more settling for the group’s choice of restaurant when you’re craving something different or missing out on an activity because it doesn’t fit the group’s plan.

Solo cruising lets you tailor your trip before you even set sail or spontaneously decide each day.

3. Meet New People

If you’re considering solo cruising, you might wonder about socialising. Well, it’s easier than you think! Many cruise lines offer solo group meet-ups where you can connect with other solo travellers in a casual setting.

In the main dining room, you can join a table with other solo cruisers or request a table for yourself if you prefer some quiet time.

On my recent cruise on Costa Smeralda, I was seated at a table with five other female solo travellers from the UK, which was brilliant on a ship that was full of European families and couples. We had a blast!

With some cruise lines, it’s important to let them know your preferences before you go. That said, I know a solo cruiser who sails with P&O Cruises and loves to meet new people. They usually just turn up at the main dining room and tell the staff they’re happy to sit wherever rather than reserving a specific place. This flexibility makes it easy to enjoy new company each meal.

They often find themselves getting to know other diners, exchanging travel tips, and coordinating plans like sharing a taxi at the next port. These casual meet-ups at dinner can lead to fun and unexpected moments, like sharing an extra drink from someone’s drinks package – even though that’s not strictly what you should do!

So, whether you’re up for a lively group chat or a peaceful solo meal, you have complete control over your social experiences on board.

4. It’s Safe and Secure

A lady relaxing on the balcony of a criuse next to a table with a drink and a laptop.

If you’re keen to travel but hesitant about doing it alone, cruising offers a great solution. With everything controlled and a high level of security onboard, it’s a particularly safe option.

Cruises provide a secure environment where you can explore new places without the fear of loneliness or danger. From the moment you step aboard, you’re in a protected bubble with staff ready to assist at any time.

Plus, when arriving at a port, you have the choice to venture off the ship for a wander or join an organised excursion. If you are not ready to do that by yourself, you can enjoy the peace and amenities onboard.

5. You Can Find the Perfect Spot

One of the perks of solo cruising is the ease of finding a spot just for you, whether it’s a seat in the theatre for a show or a sunbed by the pool. Since you’re only looking for one spot, you can often find prime locations that groups might miss.

This flexibility allows you to spontaneously decide to participate in more activities, making the most out of your cruise experience by exploring a wide range of events that might otherwise be missed.

6. It’s Relaxing

Solo cruising is all about relaxation. You’re free to plan your day however you like. Want to spend a few extra hours sleeping in or reading by the pool? Go ahead.

There’s no need to rush or compromise your plans to fit someone else’s schedule. Enjoy a quiet breakfast overlooking the sea, or unwind in the spa.

he calm and quiet of travelling alone means you can relax, enjoy your time away, and have a break from the busyness of everyday life.

7. Build Your Confidence

Travelling alone, especially on a cruise, is a fantastic way to boost your self-confidence. Each decision you make, from choosing your shore excursions to deciding how to spend your evenings, reinforces your independence.

Engaging with new people, navigating the ship, and managing your itinerary all contribute to a sense of self-reliance. Over time, these experiences build your confidence on the cruise and in everyday life, proving you can handle new challenges and situations independently.

8. Convenient and Streamlined Travel

Aerial view of a Carnival cruise ship docked at Port Canaveral, Florida, with the vast expanse of the port infrastructure visible in the background, illustrating the scale and operation of a major cruise ship port.

Solo cruising might come with higher costs due to single supplements, though it’s worth watching for special deals that reduce these extra charges. However, the real appeal lies in its unmatched convenience, especially if you choose a no-fly cruise.

Suggested read: How To Get P&O Cruises With No Single Supplement

This option eliminates the stress of arranging flights and transfers, allowing you to begin your holiday with ease. Plus, some cruise packages offer coach transportation directly to the port, picking you up right from your doorstep. This seamless integration of transportation greatly simplifies the logistics of planning your solo trip.

The Bottom Line

Solo cruising offers a fantastic opportunity to explore, relax, and work in a setting that combines comfort and adventure. I highly recommend giving solo cruising a try, regardless of your situation.

It’s an experience worth having at least once, whether just for a couple of nights to get a taste or for a longer cruise. Ultimately, solo cruising is a practical way to enjoy travel, offering relaxation and the freedom to explore at your own pace.

P&O Cruises’ Britannia Has Major Refit Ahead of 10th Anniversary

P&O Cruises’ beloved Britannia ship has recently undergone a significant multi-million-pound refurbishment and is now ready to set sail from Southampton.

A photo of the P&O Britannia on the ocean.

This update, completed in time for its upcoming 10th-anniversary celebration in 2025, includes a series of enhancements designed to elevate the guest experience.

Britannia has welcomed several design elements previously seen on Iona and Arvia, particularly in the newly adorned Sunset Bar, which now features a warm colour scheme and additional seating.

In addition, the Market Café has been updated to enhance both space and dining options. It now offers an exclusive range of gelato-filled doughnuts from the luxury gelato brand Snowflake – a first at sea.

The refit not only refreshed the public spaces with a new colour palette but also extended the Loyalty and Cruise Sales area and invested in improvements to the crew’s living quarters.

Children will find joy in the upgraded splash area, which includes colourful interactive water features, ensuring fun for all family members.

Below is a photo of my kids enjoying the old splash area on Britannia. We’ve booked again for 2025 and I can’t wait for them to see the new and updated one!

“Britannia is our flagship, and with her 10th anniversary celebration cruise next summer we know the importance of ensuring the ship looks its absolute best to deliver an elevated experience for our new and loyal guests.”

Paul Ludlow, President of P&O Cruises

The anniversary cruise, setting sail on June 6, 2025, will tour the British Isles, featuring stops in Edinburgh, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Belfast, and an overnight stay in Liverpool, concluding in Cork.

Bringing or Buying Cigarettes on a Cruise Ship? Here’s What You Must Know

Whether you’re a smoker or you’re looking to hopefully pick up some cigarettes for a friend or family member, it’s important to know what the rules are about bringing cigarettes onto a cruise ship and whether you can buy them on board.

How many cigarettes are you allowed to bring onto a cruise ship? And how many can you buy to take home? Let’s take a look…

cigarettes

You can bring as many cigs as you want on your cruise

Unlike alcohol, there are no limits on the number of cigarettes you pack into your luggage. The only rules are related to the type of lighters you can bring onto a cruise ship, and where you smoke.

So feel free to bring your own cigarettes on a cruise ship if you have a particular brand that you prefer, or if you just don’t want to be buying when you’re on the cruise ship.

As long as they are regular cigarettes, there won’t be an issue. Any kind of cannabis cigarette would be banned though, so don’t try sneaking any of those on – you’ll likely be told you can’t cruise.

In terms of the lighters, a regular lighter is also fine. Novelty lighters, especially those that look like guns, are typically prohibited, while torch lights that have a powerful flame are also banned.

Most cruise ships sell cigarettes on board

Cruise ships will have a store that sells cigarettes and other goods, including alcoholic drinks. Some cruise lines will only sell cartons but others may sell individual packets that you can buy.

Hand holding a small pack of cigarettes in front of an open cash register with various denominations of banknotes secured under metal bill clips, suggesting a transaction or sale of cigarettes possibly on a cruise ship.

If you’re on a cruise ship that only sells cartons, but you prefer to buy single packets, you might have better luck trying when you’re in port, depending on where you’re cruising to. Sometimes you’ll get better prices even than the duty-free costs you would pay on the ship.

You can also sometimes buy individual packets of cigarettes at some of the bars on the ship – typically, the casino bar will be stocked with them and some other bars may be too. You may not see them displayed, but just ask your server and they’ll let you know.

Cruise ship cigarettes are duty-free

Cruise ships usually sell duty-free cigarettes, meaning you can get cartons cheaper than you would on land because you don’t have to pay the duty tax on top of the regular price.

However, on some cruises in Europe, duty-free shops are not permitted to open, because of EU regulations. Cruises from the UK are fine, but if your cruise embarks from an EU port and only sails to other EU ports, you might not be able to buy cigarettes free of tax.

As to whether you can smoke them on the cruise, or if you need to wait until the last day and collect them to take off the ship, it varies. If you’re buying individual packets from the bars, these are taxed and so you can smoke them whenever you want.

Most cruise lines don’t publish this information, unfortunately, but here’s what I’ve found from a mix of cruise line policies and cruise forum posts:

Cruise Line Policy
Ambassador Cruise Line Held until the end of the cruise
Carnival Can be taken back to your cabin
Celebrity Cruises No information available, but likely the same policy as Royal Caribbean below
Cunard Line Can be taken back to your cabin
Disney Cruise Line Held until the end of the cruise
Holland America Line Can be taken back to your cabin
Marella Cruises Held until the end of the cruise
MSC Cruises Held until the end of the cruise
Norwegian Cruise Line Held until the end of the cruise
P&O Cruises Held until the end of the cruise
Princess Cruises Can be taken back to your cabin
Royal Caribbean Varies – “in some areas” cigarettes are held

However, if you’re buying cartons, it’ll depend on the cruise line and sometimes on where you’re sailing.

You may be able to take them back to your room, or you may need to collect them on the final day of your cruise before you disembark.

Screenshot of a forum post by user Salacia responding to a question about purchasing cigarettes on a cruise. Salacia explains that passengers can buy a pack of cigarettes in various bar areas on board and take them immediately, but cartons purchased in the Duty-Free shop are held until the last day of the voyage. The post is dated September 13, 2012. “...if the carton/s are purchased in the Duty-Free shop, the cigs are held until the last day of your voyage.”

There are limits to how many cigarettes you can bring home

While some cruise passengers have reported being limited to two cartons of cigarettes on their cruise, you can usually buy as many as you want.

However, there will be limits on how many you can bring back into your home country duty-free, and you should declare any extras when you disembark the ship.

It’s important you’re aware of the customs rules for your country. For both the UK and the US, the rules are the same – you can bring back a maximum of 200 cigarettes (so one carton, typically) from duty-free, but anything over that you will need to declare at customs and pay tax on.

Make sure you check the size of cartons you’re buying. While typically a carton refers to a full 200 cigarettes, some of those sold on cruise ships are smaller and hold 100.

A lot of cruise passengers have said that they’ve bought lots of cartons and just been waved through at customs, without being checked, or they’ve just lied and said they have nothing to declare and they haven’t been searched.

In my experience, if your cruise arrives home at the weekend you’re much less likely to find customs staff present in the port, but don’t bank on that.

If you want to take this risk, then it’s on you, but be aware that technically, it’s smuggling and you could land a hefty fine. If you’re bringing back enough cartons that it looks like you’re planning on selling them on for profit, then you could even risk a prison sentence – it’s that serious.

The Cost of Cigarettes on a Cruise vs. On Land?

Cigarettes on a cruise ship are usually cheaper than they are on land – sometimes a third of the price you would pay ashore, depending on your chosen brand and if the cruise line has any special offers available. But it also depends on where you would buy them on land.

Cruise lines don’t publish the prices of cigarettes on their websites so it’s hard to get an accurate price at any one time – they may fluctuate. However, I’ve found some example prices from some of the biggest cruise lines that will serve as an example.

On most cruise ships, you can expect to pay between $55 and $75 for a carton of 200 cigarettes. A packet of 20 cigarettes will cost you between $6.50 and $9.

“Individual packs of Marlboro at the casino bar were $6.95 on Mariner in September.”

But the really big savings come when you get multi-buy offers – a common one is to buy three cartons and get a fourth free. So you can bring down the average cost of a carton of cigarettes to under $40.

A photograph of a Royal Caribbean International receipt for the purchase of Marlboro Silver cigarettes, totaling $165.00 on the Adventure of the Seas cruise. The receipt shows multiple purchases of the same item, with the server named Andres and the date as November 23, 2023.

In the US, a packet of cigarettes costs an average of $8, but it varies by state. The cheapest cigarettes are in Missouri, where they cost $6.11 per pack. The most expensive are in New York, with an average price of $11.96.

Cartons cost anything from $70 to $120 or even more – a lot of people have reported paying much higher prices!

Screenshot of a forum conversation where user sgttami responds to BasicSailor's comment about the price of cigarettes. Sgttami mentions that $52.50 per carton is a smoker's delight price and compares it to higher prices in New York and New Jersey as told by their sister. The post is dated February 12, 2023, and has received emoji reactions for 'love' and 'laugh'. “My sister pays $157.00 a carton in New York and New Jersey is $120.00.”

In the UK, cigarette packets are a lot more expensive – after checking all the big supermarkets in the UK, the cheapest packet of 20 cigarettes is £11.20 while the average is around £13.50. That works out at around $17 per packet.

UK cartons of cigarettes cost around £120 to £150 to buy.

Averages On a cruise ship On land (USA) On land (UK)
Cost of a Packet $7 $8 £13.50 / $17
Cost of a Carton (200) $60 $90 £120 / $150
Close-up of a lit cigarette held between fingers, with smoke curling upwards, on the blurred background of a cruise ship deck.

Should you bring your own or buy them on board?

Typically, it’s better to buy your cigarettes onboard your cruise, but it depends.

The pros of buying the cigarettes on the cruise ship:

  • You’ll save money since they’re usually significantly cheaper
  • If you’re planning on smoking them on the ship, you’ll save packing space
  • You can get a great deal if there’s a multibuy offer running

But the downsides are:

  • They might not stock your preferred brands
  • Some cruise lines hold duty-free cigarettes until the end of your cruise, so you can’t enjoy them onboard

NEW DEALS JUST RELEASED!

Don’t miss these hot cruise offers…

Final Word

If you’re planning on buying cigarettes to take home with you, then buying onboard does make sense since you can often get a great deal.

Check the prices in port, too though, since you are allowed to buy cigarettes on land and bring them back onto the ship – they may just be taken from you until the last day of your cruise, just as alcohol would be.

For smoking on the ship though, it may be better to buy before you travel, rather than relying on picking up the occasional packet from the bars onboard since not all will sell them, and you’re guaranteed to get your preferred brand.

Check your cruise line, too, since duty-free cigarettes may be held for you, so you might not be able to enjoy them until you’re off the ship.

The 8 Best Nile River Cruises (According To Real Reviews)

Most river cruises that you can book focus on the European rivers, such as the Danube and the Rhine. But there are some more unique options available, and cruising on the Nile is one of the most thrilling.

You’re almost guaranteed stunning weather, and you get to enjoy some of the world’s most fascinating history and culture.

Several Nile cruise ships moored side by side at a dock in the golden hour of the early evening. The ships are multi-decked with rows of windows and life rings, bustling with activity against a backdrop of the distant shoreline under a clear sky. This scene captures the vibrant atmosphere of river cruising in Egypt.

But which Nile cruises are the best? I’ve picked out eight of the best options so that you can pick the perfect one for you.

Nile River Cruises – Ranking Explained

I haven’t personally sailed on all eight of these river cruise lines, so if I were to rank them based purely on my opinion, it wouldn’t be useful information. Even if I had cruised on them all, my opinion is subjective, and everyone has different priorities for their cruises.

So, to make this ranking as fair as possible, I’ve instead used the review scores from Cruise Critic, an independent site that collates thousands of real passenger reviews.

Cruise Critic has two review scores for each cruise line – one from their experts and one that’s an average of customer review scores. I’ve ignored the experts’ score for the same reason I’m not using my own subjective opinions, and I’ve only used the customer review average.

Normally, when I write ranking lists, I also use TripAdvisor and Cruiseline.com to get a bigger average, but they aren’t great for river cruise lines. A lot of the cruise lines on this list aren’t included on those sites.

So, this is just Cruise Critic’s scores, but those at least are based on a wider base of real reviews from actual customers, and not just my own gut instincts.

1. Avalon Waterways

The Avalon Farah, a modern river cruise ship by Avalon Waterways, sails calmly on the Nile. Its distinctive round windows and streamlined design give it a contemporary look. Passengers enjoy the view from the upper deck, taking in the serene river and lush palm trees lining the bank, reflecting the unique blend of luxury and exploration that river cruises offer.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.7/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: Approx. £300 per person, per night cruise-only
  • Children Allowed: 8 years+ only

Avalon Waterways has an excellent reputation for luxury touring. This isn’t just a river cruise – with Avalon Waterways you can expect fantastic packages that involve exciting sailings along with land tours to the best sights.

Guests love the onboard experience, with beautiful ships that offer really comfortable rooms and stunning food (often praised in reviews).

The cruise line isn’t cheap – you’ll pay a premium for the high standards of service and food onboard for your Nile cruise. But clearly, guests think that it’s worthwhile, based on that exceptional average review score.

There are two options for Nile river cruises. Both begin in Cairo and involve a flight to Luxor to then start the actual cruise to Aswan, before flying back to the Egyptian capital. This lasts 10 nights, with the option for a 4-night extension that includes a flight to Jordan and an exploration of Petra.

Throughout either itinerary, you can expect tours to give you as much time as possible to explore the sights, such as the Pyramids and the monument at Karnak, with expert guides bringing everything to life.

2. AmaWaterways

The AmaDahlia, AmaWaterways' luxury river cruise ship, navigates the historic Nile River. A traditional sailboat with a single white sail glides in the foreground, contrasting with the grandeur of the cruise ship. In the background, the rugged hills of Egypt's landscape and remnants of ancient structures blend the past and present, capturing the essence of cruising the Nile.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.6/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £350-450 per person, per night cruise-only
  • Children Allowed: 4 years+ only

AmaWaterways has two river cruise ships offering Nile sailings – AmaDahlia and AmaLilia. This gives you a lot more flexibility on dates, letting you pick the perfect time of year to visit. Prices are lower during the summer months, often by as much as £1,000 per person.

This is another luxury cruise line and guests really do love the experience onboard – the food, in particular, is often praised, especially by those who’ve cruised on several different river cruise lines and can draw the comparison between them.

However, there are some comments that these two ships aren’t quite as luxurious as the rest of the fleet. Most guests still rave about their experience, but some people have said that the onboard experience felt a little more budget than European river cruises.

The itineraries for Nile cruises are all identical – 3 nights in Cairo, followed by a 7-night river cruise from Luxor and then one more night in Cairo. You can also add on an optional post-cruise tour of Jordan if you want to.

3. TUI River Cruises

A TUI River Cruise ship smoothly sails the Nile, captured in the soft light of the morning. The ship's white exterior with rows of windows reflects on the water, contrasting with the lush greenery and palm trees on the riverbank. The tranquil waters and clear skies create a serene and picturesque scene of river cruising in Egypt.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.6/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £240-285 per person, per night with flights included
  • Children Allowed: No

TUI River Cruises is aimed at the British cruise passenger, and so could be the perfect option for a Nile river cruise if you want to travel from the UK.

It’s not quite as luxurious a river cruise line as some competitors, but the value you get from the fares is amazing – expect to pay less than you would with other cruise lines, but also get your international airfare included, with regional flight options available.

That makes a huge difference, and TUI is the best option on this list if you’re on a budget, especially with the option to book without a deposit. You won’t get pre-cruise or post-cruise stays included by default but there’s always the option to add them on.

Admittedly, the number of reviews on CruiseCritic for TUI River Cruises might be working in the cruise line’s favour – there aren’t a huge number. But guests generally love the service, with the crew and the little extra touches being mentioned several times.

It’s probably best to avoid TUI if you want fine dining and the most luxurious accommodation, but for British-style cruising on a budget, it’s unrivalled.

4. Scenic

A Scenic luxury river cruise ship glides on calm waters during a pastel-hued sunset. The ship's white and gold trimmings gleam, and the top deck with lounge chairs is invitingly visible. Gentle ripples in the water and the silhouette of palm trees on the distant shore complete this idyllic river cruising moment.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.4/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £540-640 per person, per night with flights included
  • Children Allowed: 12 years+ only

Scenic offers some of the most opulent tour options for exploring Egypt, with prices that reflect that – though you do get a completely inclusive experience, with international airfare covered.

Scenic’s ships are all-suite affairs offering a truly five-star holiday, with Nile dates available throughout the autumn and winter months.

What makes Scenic’s Nile getaways stand out is the extensive nature of the itinerary. Each package is 14 nights long, including extended stays in Giza and Cairo around the actual Nile cruise. This extended time means you get more opportunities to see all of the incredible sights that Egypt has to offer at your own pace, with lots of free time mixed in with organised tours.

Scenic is a great choice if budget is no concern – but if you’re stretching to pay for it, you might be better looking at other options on the list.

The service, food and accommodation standards are very high and guests do appreciate them, but you can still have a great time on a cheaper alternative if you don’t need the finest standards.

5. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

A Uniworld Boutique River Cruise ship serenely sails on the Nile at dawn, with the soft light of sunrise illuminating the desert mountains in the background. Hot air balloons float gracefully in the sky, adding a touch of adventure to the peaceful scene. The ship’s decks are lined with passengers likely taking in the majestic views, mirroring the tranquil and exploratory spirit of a river cruise in Egypt.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.3/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £430-490 per person, per night cruise-only
  • Children Allowed: 4 years+ only

Another cruise line that offers premium experiences, Uniworld’s cruises are very much aimed at those with a real passion for fine dining, decadent accommodations and refined service. While children are technically permitted from 4 years+, this really isn’t the cruise line for them.

The standard Nile cruise itinerary with Uniworld runs for 12 nights, including a pre-cruise stay in a luxury hotel in Cairo. There are also several options for tour extensions – similar to other cruise lines you can visit Jordan, but you can also add on a trip to Jerusalem if you prefer.

There’ll always be an experienced Egyptologist onboard your cruise, so these are great itineraries if you really are fascinated by the region and want to soak up as much knowledge as possible. Every day, you’ll get exciting tours to enjoy led by the experts too.

The guides get several mentions in the most positive reviews of Uniworld, praising their knowledge but also their approachability. An interesting negative comment mentioned a couple of times is that the itineraries cram too much in – so some destinations can feel a little rushed.

With two ships in the region, there are plenty of dates available for guests to choose from, though the cruises aren’t available from June to August.

6. APT Touring

The MS Sun Goddess, a multideck river cruise ship, majestically floats on the Nile River. Its sleek white structure with bold turquoise accents is marked by the sun emblem, symbolizing the vessel's name. Passengers can be seen enjoying the sundeck loungers, promising a relaxing journey with scenic river views and Egyptian hospitality.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.1/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: Approx. £500 per person, per night including London flights
  • Children Allowed: 12 years+ only

APT Touring is a company that offers a fantastic range of experience packages, including many that incorporate river cruises.

There are two main reasons to consider APT Touring for a cruise along the Nile, and both are related to flexibility…

Firstly, you can choose between a traditional APT cruise that’s more luxurious, and includes a better class of service onboard (more meals, more complimentary drinks etc.) or you can opt for an APT Travelmarvel cruise, which is still great quality but doesn’t include quite as many meals onboard and fewer additional experiences too.

The second reason is the range of itinerary options, with packages lasting 12, 16 or 20 days depending on your preferences, visiting as many as 21 different destinations across 3 countries.

7. CroisiEurope

An aerial view of the CroisiEurope river cruise ship, elegantly cruising on the water with a well-appointed sundeck featuring a large swimming pool. The ship's long, white structure with neat rows of windows is crowned with a spacious open-air lounge area, offering guests a luxurious and relaxing voyage.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.1/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £180-200 per person, per night cruise only
  • Children Allowed: 5 years+ only

Looking to cruise the Nile on a restricted budget? CroisiEurope might be ideal. They offer the cheapest cruise fares starting at around £1,200 per person for a week, though that doesn’t include flights.

You still get all your meals included for that fare along with drinks during meals, and a host of excursions to see the sights too, such as local boat trips. The onboard experience is great too – expect local cuisine options and traditional Egyptian entertainment on several evenings.

Port-to-port options are available or you can choose longer packages that include pre-cruise stays in Cairo, though fares increase significantly for those.

One important thing to note is that, while CroisiEurope is generally an excellent river cruise line for families in Europe, offerings for children are a little more limited on Nile sailings. You won’t get free child places like you would on the Rhine or Danube but you can get discounts, and an extra bed can be added to your cabin.

Guest reviews are very positive on the overall CroisiEurope experience, but some guests who’ve cruised on several cruise lines say they can notice the difference in food quality and luxury levels, with CroisiEurope not being quite as good as more expensive rivals.

8. Riviera Travel

The Riviera Travel river cruise ship is captured mid-voyage on the Nile, its blue and white exterior crisp against the backdrop of the Egyptian landscape. Passengers on the upper deck appear to be enjoying the panoramic views, with the rural shoreline and palm trees providing a tranquil setting for their journey.
  • Average Customer Score: 4.0/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £350-370 per person, per night including London flights
  • Children Allowed: 12 years+ only

Riviera Travel is the second cruise line on this list that is more catered to British travellers, and you could consider it a more luxurious competitor to TUI River Cruises, albeit with higher cruise fares to match.

However, some of the cruise reviews say it isn’t quite the 5* experience, which is why it’s bottom of this list (though still with a respectable average of 4 out of 5).

The ship is definitely comfortable, modern and attractive but the food is a little bit of a letdown to some guests who were expecting fine dining. Drinks packages are available for an extra charge.

The company offers two different Egypt river cruise options – either 10 days or 14 days – both of which include a stay in Cairo and return flights from London.

The best way to book a river cruise

Want expert help to plan your perfect cruise?

Final Word

Whether you want to enjoy only a cruise between Luxor and Aswan along the Nile, or you prefer a more complete tour that includes pre- or post-cruise stays in Cairo and even more potential options in the region, those are the best options available.

Some may be out of your budget, or you might have a particular preference for the more luxurious cruise lines. The key point is that they are all excellent options – even the lowest average score of 4 out of 5 is still an overwhelmingly positive review score.

So if only one of these cruise lines fits in your price range and has the dates you want, you can be confident you’ll still have a fantastic Nile river cruise.

Cunard Queens Grill Vs Princess Grill

When booking a Cunard cruise, you’ve the choice of a regular Britannia stateroom or you can treat yourself to more sumptuous accommodations by upgrading to a suite in the Grills.

There are two broad categories – Queens Grill and Princess Grill – each offering fantastic features and a host of perks.

Comparison of two luxury suites, the Queens Grill versus the Princess Grill, aboard a Cunard cruise ship. The left image shows a room with a large bed with white and navy blue pillows under a padded headboard, flanked by wooden bedside tables and lamps. The right image displays a similar room layout with a champagne bottle and glasses on a table, indicative of the enhanced amenities in the Queens Grill suite.

But which is better (you can probably guess from the name), and what do you get with each? Let’s take a look.

Cunard Grill Suites Explained

Cunard calls its suite classes the Cunard Grills – a name that’s stuck since the early 1900s when Cunard offered grilled meats as a perk to first-class customers.

The Princess Grill Suites covers the entry-level suites – a significant upgrade over the Britannia staterooms, but not quite as luxurious as the Queens Grill, which houses the very best suites across the fleet.

A king-sized bed adorned with a geometric-patterned red throw and navy blue pillows is centered in the room, complemented by a plush beige sofa and a glass-topped table with a champagne ice bucket and glasses. Rich wood paneling and an orchid arrangement add to the room's luxurious ambiance.
Queens Grill

List of Queens Grill and Princess Grill Suites

The Princess Grill Suites are simply named Princess Suites, and they can be found on all four ships in the Cunard fleet – Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and the new Queen Anne.

There are several types of Queens Grill suites, and not all are available fleet-wide. Here’s a breakdown of the different suite options across the fleet:

Queens Grill Suite Type Queen Mary 2 Queen Elizabeth Queen Victoria Queen Anne
Grand Suite No YES YES YES
Master Suite No YES YES YES
Grand Duplex Suite YES No No No
Duplex Suite YES No No No
Royal Suite YES No No No
Penthouse Suite YES YES YES YES
Queen Suite YES YES YES YES

Cunard Grill Suite Sizes

One of the main differences between Princess Grill and Queens Grill suites are the sizes – choosing a Queens Grill class of suite means you’ll get much more space to relax and enjoy.

Here’s a comparison of the different suite sizes:

Suite Suite Size (square feet) Balcony Size (square feet)
QG – Grand Suite 1240 to 2130 205 to 970
QG – Master Suite 850 to 870 140 to 220
QG – Grand Duplex Suite 1600 645
QG – Duplex Suite 1345 220
QG – Royal Suite 800 N/A
QG – Penthouse Suite 370 to 680 135 to 175
QG – Queen Suite 350 to 770 125 to 350
PG – Princess Suite 245 to 420 50 to 100
B – Britannia Club Balcony 180 to 250 50 to 80

Princess Suites are always larger than a Britannia Club Balcony, though not by huge sums – the balconies can be similar sizes, and you may only get around 60 square feet of extra space in the room.

As you progress further up the tiers of Queens Grill suites, you’ll get much more space including suites with separate dining rooms and lounge spaces for hosting guests, expansive balconies and walk-in wardrobes.

Guests staying in a Princess Grill suite get to enjoy a host of additional perks compared to guests staying in a Britannia Club Balcony stateroom or lower.

  • A reserved table for you each night in the Princess Grill restaurant
  • A bottle of sparkling wine and luxury chocolates to enjoy on arrival
  • A pillow menu to help you get the best sleep
  • Speciality tea- and coffee-making facilities in your room
  • Complimentary bottled spring water in your suite, replenished throughout your cruise
  • A selection of fresh fruits delivered each day
  • Complimentary room service, 24 hours per day
  • An enhanced Grills Afternoon Tea service, offered in the Grills Lounge
  • The option to dine in your suite, ordering from the Princess Grill restaurant menu
  • Access to the Grills Lounge and Grills Terrace
  • Access to the Grills Courtyard on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth
  • A special Grills Concierge Service
  • Priority embarkation and disembarkation

A few of these are worth explaining in more detail.

Princess Grill Restaurant

Cunard has distinctive restaurants for all its guests, so if you stay in a Princess Grill suite, you’ll dine at the Princess Grill restaurant.

The photo depicts a well-appointed area with tables dressed in white linen, fine china, and crystal glassware. Red patterned carpet, ornate golden lighting, and large windows offering a view to the outdoor seating area create an ambiance of classic luxury.

You get your own table, reserved for the duration of the cruise, and you’ll enjoy lavish dining with improved options compared to the Britannia restaurant onboard.

Exclusive Grills Areas

Each ship has a Grills Lounge and Grills Terrace, only accessible to the guests in Grills Suites. The Grills Lounge is the perfect place to grab a drink in a quiet corner, or just read a book as your ship sails.

Plush beige armchairs and sofas are neatly arranged around wooden coffee tables, with elegant lamps providing soft lighting. In the background, a well-stocked bar awaits, enhancing the cozy yet refined ambiance of this exclusive lounge area.

Meanwhile, the Grills Terrace is your outdoor sundeck, where you won’t ever have trouble finding a luxurious sun lounger.

Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth also have the Grills Courtyard, an alfresco dining terrace with beautiful decor including ornate lamposts.

Enhanced Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is a popular event on Cunard ships, but choosing a Princess Grills suite means you enjoy an even more refined service in the luxurious surrounds of the Grills Lounge.

Laughter and conversation are evident, as they share a cheerful moment, with one individual pouring tea and another offering a plate of food, encapsulating the joy of cruise dining experiences.

Grills Concierge

Grills Suite guests have access to a special Concierge service that can help you onboard your ship, including making reservations at other speciality restaurants or booking your shore excursions on your behalf.

If you stay in the Queens Grill suites with Cunard, you get all the benefits of the Princess Grill suites, but with some more luxurious touches to enhance your cruise further:

  • A reserved table in the Queens Grill restaurant
  • Fresh flowers in your suite
  • A set of binoculars and a world atlas to use during your cruise
  • A complimentary mini-bar in your suite, stocked with two bottles of wine or spirits of your choice and a range of soft drinks
  • Pre-dinner canapes delivered to your suite each night
  • A bottle of Champagne and a box of luxury chocolates on arrival
  • The option to dine in your suite, ordering from the Queens Grill restaurant menu
  • A dedicated butler and room steward
  • Priority tender services (select suites only)
  • An iPad to use during the cruise (select suites only)
A professional butler on a Cunard cruise ship attentively inspects a wine glass for cleanliness. He is impeccably dressed in a vest and tie with white gloves, holding a tray with one hand, embodying the high standards of service and attention to detail that are hallmarks of luxury cruise hospitality.

The butler and room steward are dedicated to your suite, meaning they will do everything they can to make sure your accommodations are just to your liking during the day.

The butler can handle a range of tasks, including laundry services or shoe-shining. At night, they are available to help you host a party in your suite if you wish to, serving canapes and helping to serve drinks.

Is Upgrading to Queens Grill Worth It?

It’s not always clear whether it’s worth upgrading to the Queens Grill, or if a Princess Grill suite is sufficient if you want the Cunard suite experience.

It’s clear that staying in a Queens Grill suite gets you a lot more space in your suite, and a long list of additional benefits. But you need to consider how much you’d make use of those benefits – is a complimentary bar and a butler enough to make you want to pay for the upgrade?

The food options between the Princess Grills and Queens Grills restaurants aren’t very different either – you might get a couple of extra options at the Queens Grill but otherwise the menu is similar.

You might pay an additional 25% cruise fare just to move to a Queens Suite, while the very top suites are typically more than twice the price of a Princess Grills Suite.

So it will ultimately come down to personal preference. Many reviews on cruise forums say that Princess Grill Suites are more preferable because of the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant, but if you like the idea of a butler or just want the most luxurious Cunard experience possible, then a Queens Grill Suite will likely be worth it to you.

Princess Cruises Celebrates the Christening of Sun Princess

Princess Cruises held the christening/naming ceremony for the newest ship to enter their fleet, Sun Princess.

The christening ceremony on Sun Princess

The ceremony took place in Barcelona, Spain earlier today with award-winning actress and performer Hannah Waddingham serving as the ship’s godmother.

After she gave a traditional blessing (“I name this ship Sun Princess. May God bless her and all who sail on her.”), a giant bottle of champagne crashed against the hull of the ship officially christening the vessel.

Actor and magician Michael Carbonaro was the ceremony’s emcee with “Love Boat” cast members Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), Ted Lange (Isaac) and Bernie Kopell (Doc) in attendance.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

“As much as theatre has always rippled through my bloodstream so too has a strong, historic familial connection with the Royal Navy and all things nautical,” said Waddingham. “I have of course seen over the years the iconic godmothers who have been asked to represent these magnificent ships and looked on in awe. It is therefore such a great privilege to have been asked to act as Godmother to the Sun Princess, first of her class. I can’t quite believe it.”

John Padgett, Princess Cruises president, gave the following statement about having Waddington serve as the ship’s godmother.

“Hannah is globally admired and adored for her immense talent and determination. Those qualities coupled with her family’s deep connection and love for the sea make her the perfect godmother for our sensational new Sun Princess. We are honored that she has joined us for this pinnacle moment, and that she will remain a treasured part of the ship’s legacy forever.”

Sun Princess is the 16th ship in Princess’ fleet and their largest yet at over 177,000 gross tons.  She is the first in a new Sphere class for Princess and has been in service for a little less than two months.

Sun Princess will cruise in the Mediterranean until October and then the ship moves to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for cruises to the Caribbean for the winter season.
