You booked a cruise on a wonderful cruise ship. You picked out the perfect itinerary.
But how much thought did you put into choosing your cabin?
*This article has been updated since its original publishing date.
You might think, “Hey, I’m on a cruise ship, and I have the same access as everyone else to the main areas, so who cares where my cabin is?”
And if you’re a night owl who thrives on hallway noise, enjoys scenic walks (especially the elevator kind!), and prioritizes maximizing your daily step count, then maybe the cabin location isn’t that big of a deal.
But a cruise cabin that is not suited to you and your idea of a great vacation can really ruin a cruise.
Knowing what cabins to avoid and which ones to focus on is a critical part of the cruise booking process.
Here are 5 important steps I like to take when choosing the ideal stateroom on my cruise.
1. Choose the actual cabin, skipping the guaranteed fare.
This one might be obvious, but letting the cruise line choose your cabin for you will only guarantee the price, not the best location.
Some cruisers will choose a type of cabin, whether it be a suite, ocean-view, or interior stateroom, and let the cruise line pick the deck and location. Don’t do this if the cabin matters to you.
It’s just too risky. Sure, you might save a few dollars, but having the ideal location and type of stateroom could be worth more to you than the few dollars saved.
I always choose the exact cabin on my cruises and then follow the rest of the steps in this article, with only a few exceptions.
2. Pick a cabin that is surrounded by other cabins.
Having cabins on either side of you and both above and below your stateroom will provide a noise buffer from noisy venues.
It might seem counterintuitive to have other passengers surrounding your cabin, but certain venues can make way more noise than fellow passengers– hopefully.
This is important especially if you don’t plan to stay up late at night. Some areas of the ship may have late parties and loud music that could disrupt your sleep and cause excess vibration.
Let your neighbors buffer the noise and get some rest so you can hit those excursions with a well-rested mind and body.
I always check out the deck plans when choosing a cabin. I will look not only at the deck on which I plan on booking my cabin, but I will also look one deck up and one deck down. I’ve had cabins right on top of very active venues before that I would have noticed had I only studied the deck plans better.
3. Skip the cabins with interconnecting doors.
These deck plans on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas show which rooms have interconnecting doors with the black arrows. Other cruise lines use other symbols to show which rooms are interconnected.
Having an interconnecting door to the next stateroom is great if you are traveling in a group and actually know the passengers next door. It’s not so great if you want to keep noise to a minimum.
These doors allow more noise pollution to leak through than you would think. Even if your fellow cruise passengers are not talking loudly, often just shuffling around the cabin can be heard in some cases.
I’ve experienced this problem when the passengers next door were early birds. While they were opening and closing closet and bathroom doors I was next door hearing every little bit.
So yes, that little door between cabins does make a difference. I decided to make sure no future cabins had interconnecting doors.
This again will be clearly marked on most deck plans so you can see which staterooms have doors between them. Skip over these cabins and find something with a solid wall on either side of your cabin.
4. Choose a mid-ship cabin.

This step is more of a practical choice for most cruise preferences.
A mid-ship cabin will not only experience less movement at night when the ship is moving to the next destination, but it also allows you to be closer to all common areas of the ship.
My very first cruise had an aft balcony and I loved the views and sound of the water. But areas at the front of the ship seemed just so far away. Elevators are great for going up and down, but horizontal movement on a ship has to be done with legs.
Now, I didn’t mind the extra workout and getting my steps in, but it definitely wasn’t a convenient location for getting around.
Having a cabin in the center of the ship allows you to always be half-way to any venue on the vessel. The restaurants near the back of the ship and the theater at the front are always about the same distance. And it’s nice when you forget something in your cabin and need to run back real quick. We’ve all been there.
If you’re someone who has an issue with movement and sea-sickness a mid-ship cabin is ideal for you as well. The difference in motion can be quite stark if the seas are a bit rough compared to the forward and aft parts of the ship.
5. Choose a cabin between the promenade and lido deck.
In addition to being in the middle of the ship in terms of forward and aft, a cabin situated between the main promenade and lido deck can be ideal as well.
I had a cabin on deck 2 before. And this was on a ship with 18 decks. Anytime I wanted to go anywhere it required either a very long, arduous trek up the stairs, or many stops on an elevator that seemed to stop on every deck.
Most of your time on a cruise ship will be spent on the lido deck or decks near the promenade so being right in the middle of this area will mean you only need to go up or down a few decks to go anywhere.
I’ve had cabins right on the lido deck before as well, and this was very convenient for hitting the buffet or swimming in the main pool. It did mean a bit of a descent for going to the main theater, but much of this depends on where you plan to spend most of your time on your cruise.
6. Check for special cabin features.
Want a bathtub in your cabin? Feel like trying out an infinite veranda as opposed to a regular balcony? How about having a USB charging port by your bed? Is that important to you?
Know what each cabin category offers ahead of time so you aren’t left disappointed.
And don’t assume that because you sailed with that cruise line before that the cabin will have all the same amenities. Each class of ships is different, and even within a class there can be changes as some ships are updated before others.
7. Book early for best selection of cabins.
I know many of our readers are big fans of last-minute cruise deals. I am as well. But if you want to have the ‘pick of the litter” so to speak, you will want to book your cabin shortly after the cruise bookings open.
The best cabins and suites do get booked first. Cruisers are a savvy bunch and know what to look for. Solo cabins often get booked pretty quick, and the same goes for aft balconies and interior cabins (mainly because they are the cheapest cabins on board).
A good travel agent can help you decide on which cabin is best for you. Just make sure that your agent has cruise experience and ideally has been on that particular ship before.
You can also find some online resources that offer non-stock pictures of cruise cabins. I’m not a fan of the stock images the cruise lines show on their websites as they aren’t always quite as “realistic”. Read over reviews for that cabin category and location if you are able.
Sometimes you can even do a web search for a cabin number and see a video or image gallery of that cabin.
Final Thoughts
I realize most of the above is all about preference and your preference may be different than mine. But that’s the great thing about cruising. Thousands of passengers can all be on the same ship and have exactly what they want out of a vacation.
I just hope the above is helpful in making sure you get the kind of cabin you need to make your getaway something special and remarkable.
MSC Cruises has revealed details of a brand-new attraction coming to new ship MSC World America in 2025 – Cliffhanger.
This will be the only over-water swing ride at sea, giving guests the chance to literally swing out from the side of the ship, 50 metres above the waterline.
The four seats will begin on the deck before being lifted into the air, before being propelled back and forth right over the edge of the ship.
The new attraction will thrill and terrify guests in equal measure, depending on your preference for adrenaline. It’s not yet been revealed what the cost will be to try it.
MSC World America will become the new flagship for MSC Cruises when she launches in April 2025.
She will sail from Miami on a range of 7-night cruises to both the Western and Eastern Caribbean. All cruises will include visits to Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, MSC’s private island.
The ship will feature seven distinct districts onboard, each one offering its own unique facilities and experiences. The Cliffhanger will be situated in the Family Aventura district.

Over the past few years, we have seen companies unveil designs and prototypes for new cruise ships.
This includes a 60,000 passenger turtle shaped ship, a ridiculous mile long Freedom ship, and a really interesting 430,000 gross ton ship. Every one has their own vision for what future cruise ships will look like.
Now, YSA Design has unveiled a wind powered catamaran cruise ship, Seabreeze, that would have 100 cabins and carry up to 200 guests.
The ship would be over 300 feet long and have dual hulls. Since the ship’s draft would only be 12 feet, it would be able to access shallow waters where larger ships couldn’t visit.
The vessel has four 150 foot high foldable sails. If wind is insufficient, the cruise ship’s engines would run on green bio-methanol. It would have hybrid drive to also offer silent running on battery power.

“Sustainability is critical but cruise shipping also needs to continuously reinvent itself,” said Trond Sigurdsen, Senior Architect and Partner, YSA Design. “A sustainable ship which brings environmentally conscious guests closer to the sea and reaches destinations others cannot is a clear opportunity at the premium end of the cruise market.”
Each hull would have four decks with a yacht like top. The ship would carry 200 passengers in 100 cabins and have 155 crew members.
The dual hulls would also provide greater stability creating a better experience for the guests on board.
The design envisages a transparent bay structure between the hulls so that guests can “hover” over the sea. Enhanced by auxiliary lighting, “seeing a shipwreck or coral reef would be unforgettable”, said Sigurdsen.
In another scenario, guests relax on a mesh connecting the hulls in a “floating experience”.
YSA Design said the following about this new ship:
“Seabreeze also aligns closely with contemporary thinking on destination-based cruising, where a ship gliding in under sail would not disturb wildlife and would be a welcome visitor anywhere. A 21st century wind-powered ship could even drive revival in communities which suffered with the demise of sail.”
Time will tell if Seabreeze will ever be built. But for now, it’s fun to look all of the interesting new design concepts for cruise ships.
One of the most farfetched vacations is cruising. It offers much-needed ease and comfort, as well as the ability to choose global travel. Cruise ships can go all over the world and reach places only accessible by water. And what is more? A thoughtfully selected cruise vacation can make for the perfect experience gift for your loved ones.
Picking the final destination for your loved one is the most challenging part of booking a cruise vacation experience gift. Are you booking a one-month cruise? Or one of the most luxurious day cruises? You need to know how to pick the best vacation. That is what this article provides.
Read on to discover some top tips.
Select the Perfect Cruise Line
Do you want your loved ones to have an extraordinary experience? Pick the right cruise line. Each cruise line features exceptional perks and qualities. It’s advisable to do in-depth research since it’ll allow you to find a perfect match.
The cruise line’s experience and reputation is the first thing to look out for. How long have they been offering their cruise vacation services? Do they boast an excellent track record of customer satisfaction? Previous customer reviews and recommendations offer a sense of what you can expect.
After that, consider the vibe and atmosphere of the cruise line. Some cruises cater to families and provide a vast array of activities for all ages. Others concentrate more on relaxation and luxury. Consider the experience type you’re looking for and pick a cruise line that blends smoothly with your desired ambiance.
Next, look at the amenities and onboard activities of the cruise line. Also, the level of customer care and service offered is an important consideration.
Decide on the Location and Cabin Type
It’s vital to pick the right location and type. These two factors are crucial for an enjoyable and comfortable cruise experience. Some key factors to consider when you’re making your decision about location and cabin type include:
Think about the category of cabin that perfectly suits your preferences and budget: The most affordable option is interior cabins. Do you want private outdoor spaces and stunning ocean views? Go for balcony cabins. Suites, on the other hand, offer more space. Additionally, it comes with luxurious amenities. Consider your budget as well. Also, how vital it is for you to have an outdoor space or a view of the ocean adds more value to the entire experience.
Consider the location of the cabin within the ship: Cabins located on lower decks or near the elevators may provide easier access to public areas and amenities. On the other hand, those located in the middle of the ship or higher up tend to be more stable. Additionally, they provide stunning views.
Determine the Type and Size
Do you thrive in the sparkling atmosphere of a huge vessel? Or do you prefer the personalized and intimate service of a smaller ship? The type and size of the ship you pick can immensely influence your cruise vacation experience. Let’s discover a few factors you need to consider when making this vital decision.
Think about the number of individuals on board
Consider the layout and design of the ship
Think about the onboard amenities and facilities
Take into consideration the cabin options available
Consider these tips if you want to tailor your loved ones’ cruise experience to meet their unique requirements and specific interests. They will have an unforgettable cruise vacation, offering lifelong memories.
As the continued conflict in the Red Sea impacts the cruising industry, more cruise lines are either canceling or repositioning cruises.
In addition to the Red Sea situation, shifting dry dock schedules have led one cruise line to cancel at least 20 cruises that were originally scheduled for 2025.

According to news reports from Travel + Leisure, Norwegian Cruise Line has announced adjustments to its 2025 itinerary, cancelling cruises for seven of its vessels.
This decision is due to a combination of factors, including safety concerns in the Red Sea and Israel, dry dock schedules that have changed, and a full ship charter for one of Norwegian’s cruise ships.
Additionally, a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told Travel + Leisure that a greater demand for cruises to the Bahamas and from mainland United States also led to the decision to cancel other voyages.
The specific cancelled sailings are spread across the following ships and dates:

Norwegian Viva is the newest ship in Norwegian’s fleet, having just sailed her maiden voyage in August of 2023 as the second Prima-class vessel.
The ship will be offering longer sailings throughout the Mediterranean Sea before being repositioned to San Juan, Puerto Rico in December of this year.
What happens if guests already had booked cruises on these sailings?
Full Refunds and Future Cruise Credits: Guests booked on cancelled sailings will receive a full refund for their trip. Norwegian Cruise Line is also is offering a 10% Future Cruise Credit that can be applied towards any sailing departing by December 31, 2025.
Alternative Cruise Options: The cruise line is making alternative itineraries available to guests as well, identifying other cruise itineraries that are similar to the ones originally booked. Impacted guests will receive information about these options directly from Norwegian.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s itinerary adjustments, while inconvenient for booked passengers, shows the need for flexibility when booking a cruise and making plans.
There’s not much a cruise line can do when there are geopolitical issues that threaten the safety of passengers, so the cancellations of cruises in the Red Sea region were not a big surprise.
In just the last few months several other cruise lines have decided to pull their ships from the Red Sea as well.
MSC Cruises was one of the first cruise lines to cancel cruises that sailed through the Red Sea. Princess Cruises and Holland America also adjusted itineraries scheduled for the region, and several world cruises had to change plans to ensure passenger safety.
Holland America Line and Princess Cruises are both part of the Carnival group. Both have a reputation as being a more premium cruise line. So, how do you go about choosing between them?
It’d be strange for a cruise group to own two cruise lines essentially catering to the same market, and there are some key differences between Holland America and Princess. Knowing those will help you to decide which is the better fit for your own cruises.
In this guide, I’ll take you through each cruise line in detail, looking at every element of the onboard experience, so that you can work out which you should book, if any.
Ships
Both Holland America and Princess Cruises have a variety of ships in their respective fleets, although neither have as many ships as cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival or MSC.
Holland America has 11 ships currently sailing for the line, and as of writing, there are no more under construction. Princess has 16 ships in the fleet, so a little more choice, with one currently being built.
Holland America Ships
There are four classes of ships in the Holland America fleet:
Pinnacle Class – the flagships of the fleet, three ships accommodating 2,650 guests
Signature Class – two ships accommodating 2,100 guests
Vista Class – four ships accommodating 1,900 guests
Rotterdam Class – two ships accommodating 1,400 guests
The oldest ship still sailing for Holland America is MS Volendam, which first launched in 1999 and is part of the Rotterdam/R Class.
The newest ship in the fleet is the MS Rotterdam, which launched in 2021 and is part of the newest Pinnacle Class.
Immediately you can start to see a difference between the two cruise lines – Princess’ ships are almost all larger than even the largest Holland America ship, at least in terms of guest capacity.
If you’re someone who prefers a quieter, small ship then a Holland America cruise is more likely to be your style.
But if your preference is a ship that has a more lively atmosphere or, more crucially, extra space for more dining options and onboard activities, then the Princess fleet could be more suitable.
Destinations
Both HAL and Princess Cruises have a range of sailings to choose from around the world. Neither really has a ‘home’ cruise destination – while a cruise line like Carnival or Royal Caribbean will ‘mostly’ sail to the Caribbean, or MSC will have most of its ships in Europe, both Princess and Holland America have itineraries that are more evenly spread around the world. No one single destination is really favoured.
Here’s a breakdown of the different itineraries available on both cruise lines:

Holland America Destinations
You’ve a wide choice of cruise itineraries with Holland America Line, and that means a wide choice of embarkation ports too – there are 35 ports you can sail from.
They’re fairly well spread out too, so it’s not like half of those are in the US as would often happen with other major cruise lines. You get more variety in the Netherlands with three ports of embarkation (Amsterdam, Ijmuiden, and Rotterdam), as well as a lot of options in Alaska.
Holland America does offer cruises from the UK, from the port of Dover.
Princess Destinations
Princess doesn’t have quite the same variety when it comes to embarkation ports, compared to Holland America, but it isn’t super far behind. There are still 30 different options, and again there is a global spread.
The UK port for Princess is Southampton, the biggest cruise port in the country, and there are several Princess ships to choose from if you are cruising from the UK.
Princess sailings in the Caribbean and Bahamas often call at one of two private resorts in the region – Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay.
Half Moon Cay
Half Moon Cay is also visited by some Holland America ships, although very infrequently.
Which to Choose?
There isn’t a lot to separate the two cruise lines when it comes to destinations and embarkation ports. Holland America does offer more Pacific Coast cruises and a bigger variety of Alaskan itineraries, but Princess is better for Australia and New Zealand.
Otherwise, if you have a destination in mind, you’ll likely find a ship for either cruise line that works for you.
Staterooms and Suites
The accommodation options on Holland America and Princess Cruises are unlikely to sway your decision too far in one direction.
Both cruise lines have the standard range of accommodation options that you’d expect on a cruise – Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Suite categories.
Inside cabins are the cheapest on the ship, whereas if you want a view you’ll need an Oceanview cabin or better. Suites come with an additional range of perks, and so it’s worth looking at what you get to determine whether the extra cost is justified for you.
If you’re travelling solo, then your options are limited on both cruise lines…
Holland America does have a limited selection of solo cabins on MS Koningsdam, while the newest Princess ship – Sun Princess – also has a small selection of single rooms.
On the rest of the ships in the fleet, expect to pay twice the fare to secure a double room even when on your own.
Holland America Staterooms and Suites
These are some of the noteworthy accommodation options on a Holland America cruise:
Pinnacle Suites
The largest suites in the fleet, these suites offer true luxury. Not only does your suite bathroom have an oversized whirlpool bath, but so does your verandah, so you can choose to unwind indoors or outside, depending on the weather.
Spa Rooms
Available as Inside, Ocean View or Verandah Spa rooms, or as a Neptune Spa Suite, these accommodations are all situated close to the spa onboard the ship, and offer a range of tailored features to feel more relaxing, including spa-themed amenities and a premium massage showerhead.
Princess Staterooms and Suites
Here’s a look at some of the more unique options on a Princess cruise:
Sky Suites
Sky Suites are the best suites you can enjoy on a Princess cruise, though they are only available on the newest Royal-class and Sphere-class ships.
The attraction here is not so much the suite – as impressive as it is – but the balcony, which has over 1,000 square feet of space on some ships, and views in almost every direction from its lofty position. It’s the perfect space to unwind or to entertain if you like hosting parties.
Reserve Collection
Debuting on the newer Sphere Class, the Reserve Collection is where you’ll find some of the best Mini Suite and Cabana rooms in the whole fleet.
Guests who book a Reserve Collection room get access to a private restaurant, which is typically a feature you’d only get when booking a full suite with most other cruise lines.
Signature Collection
The Princess Signature Collection also makes its debut with the Sun Princess and Sphere Class, and is the very best accommodation on the ship – a selection of stunning suites.
Again, guests have a private Signature Collection restaurant to enjoy as well as the Signature Sun Deck and Signature Lounge for peaceful relaxation away from the crowds.
Which to Choose?
If you’re someone who loves spa treatments and relaxations, then Holland America’s Spa Staterooms are worth checking out. Otherwise, there’s little difference between the two cruise lines in terms of what’s available.
Both the Pinnacle Suites and Sky Suites on the respective cruise lines are exquisite, but the costs are very high too, and only a handful of guests will be deciding between those two options.
Food
Food plays a huge part of any cruise line, so let’s look a little more at what each cruise line can offer.
Holland America Line’s Food
Holland America’s ships all have a selection of dining venues to choose from, including casual venues for a snack and more formal restaurants for classy lunches and dinners.
Holland America’s restaurants are quite premium in quality – expect the freshest, finest ingredients to be used across each venue.
The cruise line hosts many culinary cruises, featuring celebrity chefs for special, intimate dining experiences, and in 2023 the line introduced a fresh fish policy, sourcing fish from ports all over the world.
Princess Cruises’ Food
A Princess cruise offers a lot of variety – there are several formal restaurants, but just as many casual venues where you can grab a lighter bite.
Indeed, many believe that Princess offers the best pizza slices at sea – it’s a matter of personal taste but the pizza is definitely good, if you’re in the mood for a snack.
There’s plenty of choice for speciality restaurants serving a range of cuisines, and Princess Cruises puts a lot of focus on authenticity – menus are carefully planned to utilise flavours and ingredients that are typically found in the regions where you’ll be sailing.
Whether you want a sit-down dinner or a lighter bite, Princess has enough options that you won’t ever get bored.
Which to Choose?
There’s a good selection of dining options across both Holland America and Princess. If the quality of food matters more to you then you’ll probably rate Holland America higher, but if you prefer to have a variety of venues then Princess tends to offer more choice.
But both are great – you’ll have a good selection of options on Holland America ships, and the quality of Princess food is still very good.
Onboard Activities
Both cruise lines offer a selection of onboard activities to entertain you during sea days.
Holland America Activities
Holland America’s activities are what you would consider to be traditional cruise activities. Not in the sense that they’re old-fashioned but they’re common across most cruise lines.
Cooking lessons, dancing lessons, spa treatments and more complement the casino and the fitness centre. You can also play pickleball, which is only available on a handful of cruise lines.
Princess Activities
Princess Cruises have a similar range of activities that you can enjoy during the day, including the traditional options of dancing lessons, art auctions, bingo, quizzes and casino gambling.
You won’t find an extensive range of innovative attractions on either Holland America or Princess,.
However, the latest Princess ships do have some nifty features, like the Sea Breeze Rollglider which offers a fun trip around the top deck. It’s not a thrill ride, but its great for enjoying the view.
Which to Choose?
Princess Cruises has a little more variety, but it’s also aimed at a broader audience. If you don’t need your entire day filled with activities, and you enjoy lounging by the side of the pool, then Holland America will likely have a more relaxing ambience.
Princess will be a little more ‘fun’, although there are other cruise lines that are more aimed at offering a packed schedule if that’s more to your liking.
Entertainment
When the sun sets, you’ll want to know what entertainment options each cruise line has to offer, and neither line disappoints.
Holland America Entertainment
Holland America Line’s evening entertainment includes some vibrant theatre shows, with dance companies and singing groups offering quality performances.
Some ships have a Rolling Stone Lounge for rock, pop and country music, while the B.B. King’s Blues Club is another very popular venue each evening, available on the newest ships.
Princess Entertainment
Princess Cruises offers some wonderful evening entertainment, including Broadway-quality shows. There are even original musicals put together by composers of classics like Wicked, so you know you’re going to enjoy something slick, professional and thoroughly entertaining.
As well as the live theatre shows, there’s also plenty of live music around the bars on the ship, along with magic and comedy performances to enjoy.
Which to Choose?
For bands, singers and dancers, both cruise lines are well represented in the evening. Princess’ shows are more of a ‘Broadway’ style including musical-style shows, and Princess also has more variety in terms of magic and comedy. Holland America focuses more on cultural music and dance.
Kids Facilities
Planning a family trip? Then you’ll want to know what kid-friendly facilities are available on each cruise line.
Holland America Kids’ Facilities
Holland America ships do have kids’ clubs, offering a good range of activities that are fun and engaging, including scavenger hunts, team games, themed parties, sports and more.
There are three age ranges, as there are with Princess, so teens aren’t mingling with the smallest kids and can enjoy age-appropriate activities.
That said, Holland America line isn’t really a family cruise line. If you sail with kids outside of the school holidays, you might be the only family on board.
Princess Kids’ Facilities
Princess Cruises is a more family-oriented cruise line, and its Camp Discovery kids clubs reflect that with an extensive range of programs and activities for all ages.
The cruise line has partnered with Discovery and Animal Planet, and so brings a lot of nature educational content into its clubs, though always prioritising fun.
The cruise line also hosts various dining events for children, so that they can enjoy a special occasion while you’re relaxing with your own lunch or dinner. Those pizza and ice cream parties always go down a treat!
Which to Choose?
While the actual facilities offered by Holland America and Princess are fairly similar, kids will typically have a better time on a Princess Cruises ship, because there will be more families onboard in almost every case.
Of course, if your kids don’t like crowds, they may prefer the quieter kids’ clubs on a Holland America ship, so bear that in mind!
Cruiser Demographics
Let’s look at the typical guests you’ll find on each cruise line.
Holland America Demographics
The average age of a Holland America guest is between 55 and 70 years old, though you’ll often find guests from their 40s to their 80s sailing on the ships too.
Most people sailing with the cruise line will be solo travellers, couples, or groups of friends.
Families are not as common, mainly because there isn’t as much to do onboard and the ships are a little more traditional in style. Yes there are good kids’ facilities, but this is not a cruise line aimed at families – it’s aimed at parents travelling “with” kids, and not “for” the kids.
Princess Demographics
The Princess Cruises demographic is quite broad – it’s not really a cruise line that only focuses on one particular market.
The average age is still between 50 and 70 for most guests, but there are also a lot of families who enjoy a Princess cruise, so there tends to be a good mix of ages on the ships.
Princess is one of the more popular cruise lines for multigenerational holidays since the older guests will like the traditional elements of the cruise line while younger guests enjoy the more contemporary elements.
Price
The price you’ll pay for a cruise is often one of the biggest determining factors for booking, so let’s see how the two cruise lines compare:
Holland America Prices
Holland America cruises are not cheap – the cruise line is positioned as a premium luxury cruise line, offering 5* service, so you shouldn’t expect amazing cheap deals.
Older ships can be a little bit cheaper, but not by much – because the fleet is already quite small, there isn’t a huge difference between the ship in terms of the price you’ll pay.
For a 7-night cruise in the Caribbean on one of the newer ships, you should expect to pay between £160/$200 and £210/$266 per person, per night for an inside cabin.

Princess Prices
Princess is considered to have a slightly premium cruise experience but not at a high price. It’s not a cheap cruise line – far from it – but it will typically be cheaper than what you’d pay for Holland America cruises.
As a guide, a 7-night Caribbean cruise on Sky Princess will cost as little as £70/$90 per person, per night for an inside cabin, but it may cost more.

See the latest Princess Cruises offers…
Things do get a little more confusing with Princess Cruises when you start to consider Plus and Premier fares, which are higher-cost fares that have a lot of extra inclusions, such as drinks packages, speciality dining meals and more.
It’s worth taking some time to look at the perks of each fare, and deciding which offers the best value for you.
While Princess Cruises does offer a slightly more premium cruise experience than some mainstream cruise lines, Holland America is another step above that. It’s more traditional, it has smaller ships, and the quality of the dining and service is a little more luxurious.
That’s not to say you’d have a bad time on a Princess ship, even if you were a couple used to a classical cruise experience. Princess just has a wider scope, blending more contemporary features into its cruise style and appealing to a wider demographic.
If you’re choosing between the two and travelling with family then I’d recommend Princess Cruises. But if you’re sailing alone or with your other half, then you’ve got more of a choice to make between the classical, premium style of Holland America or the marginally more modern and mainstream Princess.

They always attend to one thing; the food must be of the highest standard, it should be original, and taste good too. In order words, they see to it that any special dietary requirement is taken care of so that all visitors can have customized and worth remembering meals.

Many cruise lines have a separate area of the ship reserved exclusively for suite guests…
Often called a “ship-within-a-ship”, it’s an area that typically has not just the accommodation but also a restaurant, a lounge and a sun deck. VIP guests can happily spend the whole day in this area without getting caught up in the crowds around the rest of the ship.
Celebrity Cruises has this – it’s called The Retreat.
The Retreat proved so popular when it was added to the newer Edge-class ships that it has been retroactively added to the rest of the ocean-sailing fleet for the cruise line.
But, is it worth paying extra to stay in a Retreat suite, or should you look at booking something cheaper? Let’s take a look at the Celebrity Retreat benefits…
Here’s what you get when you book The Retreat…
1. Suite Accommodations
One of the obvious perks of choosing to stay in The Retreat is the suite accommodations that you can choose from.
Each ship has a range of suites available, including the entry-level Sky Suites and the more spacious and opulent Penthouse Suites, Signature Suites, Iconic Suites and more.
You’ll enjoy much more spacious rooms and balconies, including separate living and dining areas in the biggest suites onboard.
2. Private Restaurant – Luminae
Luminae is an exclusive restaurant for guests of The Retreat, offering a more premium dining experience than in the Main Dining Room.
Expect elegant and modern design and beautiful dining options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Retreat guests are still welcome to enjoy the Main Dining Room and other speciality restaurants onboard too, of course.
3. The Retreat Lounge
The Retreat Lounge is a modern and inviting space that’s exclusive to suite guests.
Here, you can just soak up the view and enjoy a quiet spot to read a book, or you can sample some of the complimentary drinks and light bites served throughout the day. This is also where you’ll find the Concierge service.
4. The Retreat Sundeck
The Retreat has its own sundeck, a peaceful haven of tranquillity when you want to relax on a lounger without the busy crowds.
The Edge-class ships all have a pool on the deck here, while older ships will have either a hot tub or water feature. There’s an attendant here too, who can provide drinks, snacks and towels for you to use.
5. Retreat Butler
Retreat guests will be able to enjoy the services of a butler team, who go above and beyond to make your stay more comfortable.
Whether it’s sorting out a laundry request or changing your pillows to something else from the menu to help you sleep better, nothing is too much trouble.
6. Retreat Concierge
There’s also a dedicated Retreat Concierge that guests can use to help organise their cruise.
The Concierge is available pre-cruise via telephone or in-person on the ship in the Retreat Lounge. They can handle all kinds of tasks including booking spa treatments, speciality dining and more.
7. Premium Drink Package
Guests staying in The Retreat will enjoy a Premium Drink Package included in their fare, allowing them to enjoy almost any drink on the ship without paying extra. This also entitles you to 20% off any bottle of wine you buy onboard too.
8. Premium WiFi
Premium WiFi is also included for guests in The Retreat, meaning everyone in the suite can stay connected with friends and family back home or even stream their favourite movies and TV shows.
9. Priority Check-in and Departure
Guests in The Retreat are granted priority for boarding the ship on embarkation day, and for leaving the ship on the last day of the cruise.
This helps you maximise your first cruise day, whilst also beating the crowds and the rush to leave the port when your cruise is over.
10. Priority Tender
If your cruise visits any tender ports (where the ship is too big to dock and must ferry guests ashore using tender boats), The Retreat guests will get priority to board those boats.
You won’t get priority for the return journey back to the ship though, so you’ll need to queue with everyone else.
11. Complimentary In-Suite Dining
One of the best perks of The Retreat is the complimentary in-suite dining.
This is more than just room service – this is a full-service meal brought to your suite whenever you like, whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner.
If you want to skip the busier atmosphere of the restaurants and just enjoy your food in the comfort of your own room, the butler team will be happy to serve it for you. It does include lighter room service meals and snacks too, if you prefer.
12. Reserved Theatre Seating on Evening Chic Nights
Celebrity’s formal nights are called ‘Evening Chic’ and they’re some of the busier nights on the ship, as everyone likes to get dressed up and enjoy the atmosphere.
If you’re staying in The Retreat, you can request reserved seating in the theatre on these nights, so that you don’t miss a show and you get a great view.
13. Welcome Drinks
A nice little touch is that you’ll be given a welcome bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine in your suite when you arrive onboard.
You’ll also be given a selection of speciality coffees that you can enjoy in your suite throughout your cruise.
14. In-Suite Amenities
There are various other smaller touches that Retreat guests will enjoy in their suite, such as the cruise line’s premium eXhale bedding, a pillow menu, and luxury bathroom toiletries.
Guests can also request fresh fruit to be delivered to the suite, and there are slippers and a bathrobe provided for each guest to use during the cruise.
Important note:
One important note on all of these benefits – you only get them if you book a suite in The Retreat outright.
If you apply for a MoveUp upgrade – where you bid for an upgrade once you already have a stateroom booked – and you’re successfully moved into The Retreat, you won’t get all of the perks.
The Premium WiFi and Premium Drink Package won’t be included, and some others will vary.
The Cost Vs Regular Staterooms
Staying in The Retreat is a significant price jump from staying in other accommodations on the ship.
All suites in the main Celebrity Cruises fleet are now part of The Retreat, so you can’t enjoy the suite perks without paying Retreat prices.
Remember that The Retreat is not just one suite type either, so there isn’t one fixed price. Staying in the entry-level suites in The Retreat can often cost just 20% of staying in the very best suites on the ship!
Here are a couple of example cruise fares, to show you the difference in price.

Is It Worth It?
There’s no simple answer on whether The Retreat is worth it. You get a lot of perks for booking a suite, but a lot of them you can’t really put a price on – things like the exclusive sundeck and lounge area, or having a more premium restaurant, don’t have a price tag.
The best way to work out whether it’s worth it is to look at all of the perks and work out whether you would find most of them useful and enjoyable. If you would, then booking a suite in The Retreat will likely be worth it for you, provided you are looking for a cruise in that price bracket.
But if only half of the perks appeal, and you’re someone who doesn’t tend to stay in their room much and spends more time exploring the ship or the destinations you’re cruising to, consider whether booking a smaller room and paying for things like your drinks package and WiFi separately would make more sense.
Maybe you should consider the Aqua Class instead…?
Celebrity Retreat vs Aqua Class
Aqua Class on a Celebrity Cruises ship is not quite suite level – instead, it’s a class designed for guests who value the spa and relaxation and who want to make the most of that part of the cruise ship.
The Retreat has a lot more perks than AquaClass, but there are some features of AquaClass that suite guests won’t benefit from.
These include:
Yoga mats in the stateroom
Exclusive discounts on spa treatments
Unlimited access to the Spa Thermal Suite or Persian Garden (depending on the ship)
Complimentary fitness classes
Access to the Blu restaurant*
An enhanced air filtration system in the room
On the Blu restaurant – guests staying in The Retreat are permitted to use it, but only when space is available. Priority is always given to those in an Aqua Class Stateroom, since Retreat guests can use Luminae as their own exclusive venue.
The Aqua Sky Suites on the Edge-class ships offer the best of both worlds – they are the only suites considered part of both Aqua Class and The Retreat, and guests will get all the perks of each.
The Haven is Norwegian Cruise Line’s own exclusive suite area for guests. It’s very popular with NCL guests and offers many of the same services and perks you’d find in The Retreat, including a lounge, a private Haven restaurant and a sun deck.
Guests will also benefit from concierge services, luxury amenities, and a Premium Drinks Package included too – the packages are very similar.
The perks you get with The Haven on NCL that aren’t included with The Retreat on Celebrity:
A personal escort on and off the ship
Use of a mobile phone on the ship (weird, right?)
A cocktail party with the ship’s officers
And the perks you get with The Retreat that aren’t included with The Haven are:
Complimentary in-suite dining (The Haven does have free room service)
Reserved theatre seating

Final Word
Celebrity’s ships are already beautiful and modern, but choosing a suite in The Retreat really does take things to another level.
Not only do you get some of the best-looking and most spacious accommodations at sea, but you have the whole exclusive area of The Retreat to enjoy, as well as a host of additional perks and benefits.
Whether or not it’s worth it depends entirely on your budget – if you don’t often spend much on a cruise, you might prefer to book a room that’s half the price (or less) on the same ship, and be able to book a second cruise with the same money.
But for guests who want the finest experiences, and who love the idea of a peaceful and exclusive area of the ship away from the bigger crowds, then The Retreat is certainly worth considering.
