The Best & Worst Cruise Ports In Jamaica Cruise Ports (Ranked By Reviews!)

Jamaica is a popular destination in the Caribbean where many of the top cruise lines call during the winter months, and some throughout the year. It’s one of the larger Caribbean islands, so it has multiple ports for cruise passengers.

As Jamaica is 146 miles long and 21 to 52 miles wide, many excursions are available regardless of where you dock. But it’s still interesting to see the differences between the ports and which cruise line you need to book with if you have a particular port in mind.

Crown Princess in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

In this guide I’ll take you through the different ports in Jamaica, including which ones are the busiest and which lines cruise to Jamaica by port.

I also have a handy map of the cruise ports in Jamaica that you can use to help with your planning.

Jamaica has 5 cruise ports

Three are larger and are visited by cruise ships year round – Ocho Rios, Falmouth and Montego Bay.

The other two ports, Port Antonio and Kingston (Port Royal), are only visited during the winter months by luxury cruise lines.

Jamaica is very much a destination that is best visited between November and March – most cruises to Jamaica happen during these months. This is when the ports are at their busiest, with ships in port on most days during those months.

During the summer things do quieten down – even the busiest Jamaica ports will only have 6-8 ship visits a month.

In order of number of ships visiting, from busiest to quietest, the ports in Jamaica are:

  1. Ocho Rios
  2. Falmouth
  3. Montego Bay
  4. Port Antonio
  5. Kingston (Port Royal)

The Best Cruise Ports in Jamaica

Next, let’s learn a little more about each of the ports and what you can expect if you visit on a cruise…

The Best = Falmouth

Falmouth Cruise port
  • Number of ship visits in 2024 – 120 (6 more than in 2023)
  • Year-round or seasonal – Year-round
  • Pier or tender – Pier
  • Most popular month – March

Falmouth is a major port town on the northern coast of Jamaica, situated around 60 miles to the west of Ocho Rios.

According to online reviews from Cruiseline.com, Falmouth is the best Jamaican port to visit.

Many reviewers commented how everything is within walking distance of the port, with lots of shopping and the Margaritaville bar that has good food and a pool with a swim-up bar.

It’s a large town with a big port, capable of hosting the largest ships in the world – Wonder of the Seas, the largest ship sailing in 2023, being one of them.

These cruise lines visit the Falmouth Jamaica cruise port:

  • Carnival
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Holland America Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean

The popularity of the port isn’t a recent development due to cruise ships – it’s been one of the busiest ports in the country since the 18th century, and that’s reflected in the many different historical sites that can be visited during your day in port.

There’s a large commercial centre at the port following a major redevelopment, including various stores selling local wares. There are also plenty of good quality restaurants and bars just a short walk from the pier.

Most of the cruise lines only visit Falmouth during the winter months. In the summer, you’ll only find Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean calling at the port.

Typical shore excursions you can book at Falmouth include:

  • River tubing down Dunns River
  • Tours of the nearby waterfalls and lagoons
  • Catamaran and snorkelling excursions
  • Exploration tours of the jungle or of nearby caves
  • Rum tours
  • Day passes at local resort hotels and waterparks

2. Ocho Rios

Crown Princess in Ocho Rios, Jamaica
  • Number of ship visits in 2024 – 145 (7 more than in 2023)
  • Year-round or seasonal – Year-round
  • Pier or tender – Pier
  • Most popular month – January

Ocho Rios is the busiest popular port in Jamaica for cruise ships, and the second most popular according to reviews.

Unlike Falmouth, cruise ships visiting throughout the year.

This port town is situated on the northern coast of the island, with a large modern pier that can accommodate some of the biggest cruise ships in the world.

These cruise lines visit Ocho Rios:

  • AIDA
  • Carnival
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Costa
  • Holland America Line
  • Marella Cruises
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • TUI Cruises

It’s a vibrant town that has some great restaurants, bars and cafes within walking distance of the port, so there are plenty of spots where you can grab a drink and a bite to eat while you explore.

The town’s market has undergone renovation in recent years, while a new artisan village was also built that includes various small stores selling crafts and other locally-manufactured products.

Nearby, Dolphin Bay is a popular excursion spot – as the name suggests, there are plenty of dolphins swimming in the area, and guests are welcome to join them. And there’s also Columbus Park, the site where Columbus apparently landed. Now it is home to various Spanish colonial buildings.

Dolphin's Cove in Ocho Rios, Jamaica

While the winter season sees a variety of cruise lines visiting the port, during the summer months your options are more limited to Carnival and MSC Cruises only.

Some of the typical shore excursions you can enjoy at Ocho Rios include:

  • Horseback riding
  • Zipline tours
  • Exploring the jungle, on foot or by jeep
  • Watersports including snorkelling and ocean kayaking
  • Tours of the Coyaba Botanical Gardens
  • Jamaican Bobsledding – ideal for any fans of the movie Cool Runnings

3. Montego Bay

Montego Bay - Jamaica
  • Number of ship visits in 2024 – 66 (34 fewer than in 2023)
  • Year-round or seasonal – Year-round
  • Pier or tender – Pier
  • Most popular month – January

Montego Bay is the third busiest cruise port in Jamaica, and also the third most popular according to online reviews.

The reviews on Cruiseline.com are very mixed, with most people loving it, but some that aren’t happy at all…

Reviews of Montego bay on Cruiseline

The setting is breathtakingly beautiful, but some of the local salespeople can be pushy, selling no only trinkets but also some banned substances.

Situated on the north-west coast of Jamaica, Montego Bat isn’t frequented by quite as many ships as Ocho Rios or Falmouth, but it does attract the most cruise lines – 15, including some of the larger lines as well as much smaller ones that you may not even have heard of.

These cruise lines visit Montego Bay:

  • AIDA
  • Ambassador Cruise Line
  • Carnival
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Costa
  • Marella Cruises
  • MSC Cruises
  • P&O Cruises
  • Phoenix Reisen
  • Plantours
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Scenic Yacht Cruises
  • TUI Cruises
  • Viking Ocean Cruises

It’s a popular port for those ships that do visit – the town has a lot of friendly shops selling snacks and souvenirs, while there are some lively bars and good-quality restaurants serving fresh seafood and BBQ cuisine.

The town also hosts some fantastic beaches, including some quieter stretches of sand more suited to adults who want to take it easy, and beaches where the families tend to congregate for a fun-packed day of activities.

Further afield, the port is a gateway to some of Jamaica’s beautiful scenery including the Dunn’s River Falls and the Martha Brae river, which is ideal for rafting. Sugar plantation houses can also be toured if you want to see some of the history of the town and the country.

Dunn's River Falls
Dunn’s River Falls

Barring a couple of exceptions, the ships visiting Montego Bay during the summer are almost exclusively Carnival ships – the other cruise lines tend to visit only from October to March.

Popular options for excursions include:

  • Day passes to luxury resort hotels
  • Spelunking tours of Green Grotto Caves
  • Catamaran sailing and snorkelling excursions
  • White-water rafting and river tubing
  • Horseback riding along the beach
  • Tours of nearby sugar plantations

4. Port Antonio

Port Antonio, Jamaica
  • Number of ship visits in 2024 – 6 (1 more than in 2023)
  • Year-round or seasonal – Seasonal
  • Pier or tender – Pier
  • Most popular month – December

Port Antonio is one of the smaller ports in Jamaica, with just a few select luxury cruise lines visiting the area. The port is around a 15-minute walk from the main town, with ships docking at the Ken Wright Pier in West Harbor.

It doesn’t do great according to the reviews, with people describing the areas as ‘run down’. However, Jamaica is a relatively poor country, so perhaps these luxury cruisers just weren’t prepared for that?

These cruise lines visit Port Antonio:

  • Oceania Cruises
  • Scenic Yacht Cruises
  • Seabourn
  • Silversea

Unlike some of the larger ports, you won’t be hit by a plethora of shops and stalls when you step off the ship – it’s off-limits to vendors. There are also no bus services running directly from the port either.

Instead, you’ll either be able to take a leisurely stroll to town yourself and enjoy the scenery, or take advantage of the private tours already arranged for you by your cruise line.

Typical excursions include:

  • Rafting on the Rio Grand River
  • Transfers to the best beaches nearby
  • Swimming in lagoons underneath waterfalls
  • Guided tours of the town including historical commentary
  • Nature walks through local trails

5. Kingston (Port Royal)

Kingston, Jamaica
  • Number of ship visits in 2024 – 9 (8 more than in 2023)
  • Year-round or seasonal – Seasonal
  • Pier or tender – Tender
  • Most popular month – January

Kingston is the capital city of Jamaica, and the largest city on the island. It’s also a major seaport, but in recent years cruise lines have instead chosen to dock elsewhere on the island.

It remains a major cargo port, but the Port Royal harbour does also allow some smaller ships to anchor and tender guests to shore.

These cruise lines visit Port Royal:

  • Marella
  • Seabourn
  • Silversea

There is much to see in Kingston, including some stunning resorts where guests can enjoy day passes, breathtaking natural scenery, and a wealth of bars, cafes and restaurants around the port area. The city is also home to the Royal Botanical Gardens, one of the best garden attractions in the Caribbean.

The city also hosts some fascinating museums and galleries if you want a more cultural day out. The Jamaica National Gallery is the largest art gallery in the Caribbean, while the Bob Marley museum understandably attracts a lot of tourists to Jamaica.

Crime rates in Kingston are high with violence and shootings common in inner city areas. If you do visit, it’s recommended that you stay with an organised tour, keep your belongings out of sight and be careful when withdrawing cash from ATMs.

Some of the excursions you can try at Kingston include:

  • Visits to the stunning Blue Mountains
  • Tours of Devon House and the Bob Marley Museum
  • Rum tours of Worthy Park Estate
  • Catamaran sailings with snorkelling
  • Visits to Dunn’s River Falls

To Conclude

White sandy beaches, stunning rivers and lagoons, and incredible restaurants and bars serving jerk chicken and rum – Jamaica is a great destination. And whichever of these five ports your cruise ship is calling at, you can experience it all.

Things will be a bit busier at the big three ports – Ocho Rio, Falmouth and Montego Bay – and you might spot another ship in port on the same day that you visit. But if you choose a ship sailing to Kingston or Port Antonio, you’re guaranteed to have a much quieter day.

“Cleaner Walked In On Us!”, Heald Explains

Every cruise line has its own version of the “do not disturb” sign.

This conventional way of letting the cabin steward know to let passengers sleep in or be left alone for a while is not without its limits though.

Some cruise ships use magnets to put on the outside of the cabin door, and some modern ships even have an electronic system.  A passenger can simply hit a button inside the cabin to let the steward know they the room needs to be cleaned or they want to be left alone.

Carnival Cruise Line still uses the standard and true door hangers.  On one side it says “Snoozin’”.  It basically means the passenger does not want to be disturbed.

As a general rule, cabin stewards and crew respect these signs.  After all, who wants to wake up a cranky passenger who just wanted a few more minutes of seaside napping?

But in a recent instance on a Carnival ship, the passenger was upset by this apparent breach of trust.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald posted a message he received on his social media page revealing the complaint.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

“How would you like it if the cabin cleaner walked in on you John Herald. Our cleaner knocked and walked in on us ignoring the do not disturb sign we had out. This was not acceptable. We took away the gratuity and gave it to other crew people. Is this how Carnival trains their workers?” the upset Carnival passenger wrote in.

The comment was made last week, but Heald was able to get some clarification on the exact situation.  As it turned out, things were not exactly as they had seemed.

“The reason I am sharing this post is because when it was made, early last week, it had lots of you adding your thoughts saying that this was indeed wrong and that it should not have happened. I have since spoken with the Housekeeping Manager who explained what had happened. The guests had their ‘Snoozin’ sign out for more than 24 hours. So it is company policy that we check the safety and well being of the guests and that is what happened here,” Heald posted to his social media page.

Cabin stewards are not in the habit of disregarding “do not disturb” signs and barging into cabins.  In this case it was necessary safety protocol that led to the attendant’s entrance.  A safety check after 24 hours is not unreasonable.

In fact, it would have been against procedure to keep skipping the cabin and not check on the passenger’s wellbeing.

Heald then stated that “The stateroom attendant did knock as they always do before entering and as there was no reply they entered the room with the floor supervisor also there.”

He added, “The crew member was simply doing her job.”

10 Best Tips for Cruising Solo Like a Boss

I’ve been on more solo cruises than I can count.  It’s very different to cruising with a group or with another person.

But it’s not as intimidating as some think. These 10 tips will help you make the most of being a solo cruiser.

solo cruise tips
Thinking of taking a solo cruise? These tips will help you make the most of it.

When you write for a cruise blog you get more than your fair share of staterooms for one.

Along the way, I’ve learned some things the hard way.  There are some things I wish I knew before I took my first cruise by myself.

When “what you do next” is all up to you, whether on the ship or at a port of call, it helps to have a plan and know what you expect out of a cruise.

In this post I will give a few tips from things I’ve learned to help those thinking about taking their first solo cruise.

1. Don’t Assume Solo Cabins are Cheaper

I love that cruise lines are now offering cabins that don’t include a single supplement fee.  As you may know, most staterooms on a cruise ship are priced for double-occupancy.

Solo cabins avoid this extra fee.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been ambitious in offering “studios” for solo travelers.    In fact, the cruise line has over 1,500 solo cabins across its fleet.

Here’s the catch though.  Sometimes, it’s still cheaper to book a regular cabin.   I just looked up a cruise on Norwegian Breakaway today, and the inside cabin was cheaper than the studio cabin.  I’ve seen some ocean view cabins cheaper as well.

Many cruise lines offer discounts on the single supplement fee or just have certain categories at such discounts that you’re better off avoiding the single person accommodation altogether.

The rise of solo travel has been so popular lately that demand has driven up the price of studio staterooms.  So don’t assume you have to get one of those staterooms just because you’re by yourself.

2. Embrace Your Food Options

Don’t worry about feeling awkward.  You can eat alone or join other people for meals.  You can do both or either, depending on your preference or mood.  Whether it’s grabbing a burger from the onboard burger joint, hitting the buffet, or enjoying a meal in the main dining room, it’s not as uncommon as you might think to eat solo.

Of course, if you want to join other people for dinner, I recommend talking to the maître d’ who can connect you with a table.  You won’t be the only solo traveler on board and can join others if you’d like.

You can also check out a specialty restaurant on your own.   My first time eating at Wonderland on a Royal Caribbean ship was by myself and it was a fantastic experience as this restaurant is like a magic show on your plate.

One advantage of eating alone on a ship is that it won’t take up much of your day.  I don’t mind longer dinners, but when sitting at a table with 6 or 8 people it could be more than a couple hours before you’re out of there.  I’ve missed too many shows because of long dinners.

3. Plan Like Crazy

When I went to Barcelona by myself on a repositioning cruise I spent a lot of time planning.  I knew which places I wanted to visit and which areas I had to be a little more careful about, especially being alone.

The result was that by the time I got there I felt like I was already familiar with much of the city.  I knew which subways to take, how much public transportation would cost, what was walkable and what was not, and what “touristy” places I could skip.

I had my own kind of top 10 list of places I wanted to see in Barcelona, and being an independent traveler means you can just go for it.

All that planning doesn’t mean you can’t deviate from the plan though.  The whole point is that you have a structure to build from. But go off course as much as you want as well.

4. Beat the Pre-cruise Jitters

If you’re not used to traveling alone it’s perfectly understandable that you might be a bit wary about a solo cruise.  One of the best ways to beat this is to really familiarize yourself with the ship and your destinations.  I already mentioned “planning like crazy” and this helps a lot of people feeling nervous about a trip.

Know everything a ship has to offer.  Watch those cruise ship tour videos, read reviews, and ask questions.  I find that when you take a few of the “unknowns” off the table it helps set your mind at ease to know what to expect.

By the time I get on a ship I usually know where most main areas are.  Ok, it might be nerdy to study deck plans before a cruise, but it’s something I really enjoy.

I also recommend scanning that daily planner on the app every day.  At least know what’s going on around the ship so you don’t miss something that interests you.

5. Take a Walking Tour

Whether it’s through the cruise line or through a third party, I really enjoy walking tours when traveling alone.  It allows you to be part of a group and still get to dive into a community’s culture.

On my Barcelona trip I found several free walking tours of the city that only asked for a tip at the end.  As soon as my flight landed (and I lost a night of sleep) I joined the walking tour and spent the next 2 and a half hours with a group of 15 as we explored the city with an informative guide.

I would avoid tours that are mostly spent on a bus, looking out the window the entire time.  These are OK for couples or folks who don’t have the strength and energy to walk around.  I find that seeing a city while walking around gives you better perspective of the area, while also allowing you to find a few places along the way that you can revisit after the tour is over.

6. Keep Packing Simple but Bring an Extra Bag

Sure, you’ve got the entire closet to yourself, so you can bring some extra clothes if you want.  Personally, I like to pack very light.  But solo cruising allows you to have some extra space in your cabin.  Just know you will have to lug it around with you.

Some solo cruisers like to do a lot of shopping for everyone back home.  You can pack an extra bag that is empty too, so you have a way to carry all the great souvenirs you picked up along your journey.

Read more: Cruise packing: 15 things people always forget

7. Take Advantage of Solo Offerings

As I mentioned earlier, cruise lines are seeing a higher demand for this type of travel, so more things are being offered for solo travelers.

You will find special meetups in the daily planner and activities and events planned just for those who walked onto the ship without an entourage.

This doesn’t mean you have to play a random game of 20 Questions with complete strangers.  That’s all up to you.

Just know you won’t be the weird passenger who has no friends if you decide to book a cabin for one.  And interacting with others in the “same boat” can help enrich the entire getaway.

8. Embrace the Alone Time

You’re on a ship with thousands of other passengers.  But maybe you just need to get away from it all on this trip.  Solo cruising allows you the freedom to relax in your own way.  Take a nap whenever you want, snooze away on a lounger in the shade, read a book in a cozy lounge with a view of the ocean, and book that thermal suite in the spa.

You can sleep in late or be as spontaneous as you wish without worrying about messing up anyone else’s plans.  Embrace that aspect of solo travel.  It will help you return back home much more refreshed.

Read more: 12 tips for avoiding crowds on a cruise ship

9. Realize You Don’t Have to Stay Connected

As I just mentioned, you might just need a getaway.  Wi-Fi on cruise ships has gotten faster and more reliable than ever before.  But this doesn’t mean you have to use it.   Your family and friends will want to know you’re OK on this trip, so an occasional message back home is perfectly understandable.

But many phone plans offer data in foreign ports of call.  With my T-Mobile plan I can wait until the ship is in a port of call to check my email, send a few messages, and use data to make a couple phone calls.

Read more: Cell phone plans on a cruise ship: comparing the big 3.

10. Get to Know the Crew

On almost every cruise I’ve been on I’ve been impressed with the crew.  Most are hardworking, courteous, and just want you to have an amazing cruise.

Whether it’s the waiter at your favorite restaurant or your cabin steward, take the time to get to know them a little better.  Having that friendly face can help you feel less lonely, and you can always give a quick update on how your day off ship went.

With so many different cultures and countries represented by the crew on a cruise ship it’s a great way to broaden your horizons as well.  They can even offer insights into different ports of call since many of them have probably been off ship at those places before.  Ask them where the free Wi-Fi is or ask for a recommended excursion.

A little effort goes a long way so try to remember the names of the crew too.  I always feel terrible when my cabin steward remembers my name but I don’t remember theirs.  Sure, you could say it’s their job to know, but remember someone’s name can be one of the best compliments you can give them.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to feel intimidated about cruising alone.  As an independent traveler the cruise will be what you make of it.  More people than ever are finding how liberating it can be to explore new destinations on their own.

Follow a few of these tips and add some of your own.

Finding Affordable Shore Excursions: Tips and Tricks

Planning your excursions for a cruise and trying to keep costs down? I know how overwhelming it can be to balance your desire for memorable experiences with your budget constraints!

I’ve gathered the best tips and tricks to help you get the most bang for your buck.

1. Start with Research

Getting the most out of your shore excursions means planning before you set sail. It’s all about ensuring each stop along your cruise is as enriching as possible.

On my first cruise, I did zero research and I had no idea what to expect in any of the ports, or what to do when we stepped off the ship!

Nowadays, I like to kick things off by exploring what the cruise line suggests for activities at each port.

First, I’ll log in to view my booking on the cruise line’s website, and see what excursions they suggest.

viewing cruise excursions on laptop

This will give you a baseline for what’s popular and how much things cost. It’s worth doing, even if you have no intention of buying any of the cruise line’s own excursions.

But don’t stop there. Websites like Cruise Critic and TripAdvisor as well as Facebook groups and forums about cruising all have helpful insights too.

But, don’t just plan for what’s popular. It’s your cruise, you can do whatever you enjoy doing! Whether that’s taking a hike, or just sitting in the square with a glass of sangria.

When I’m with the kids, they love nothing more than to visit a playground. So, I always open up Google Maps and find ones near the port, so I can be sure to include a visit in our plans.

2. Booking Independently vs. Through the Cruise Line

When deciding on shore excursions, you have two options: stick with the streamlined, no-fuss option offered by your cruise line or venture out on your own with tours run by locals.

Of course, you can also just decided to skip the excursion altogether and wander around, that’s a good option too!

Booking with your cruise line is the path of least resistance. You choose, pay through your account and when you step off the ship, there’s a coach waiting for you.

cruise excursion coach

You can also rest easy knowing the ship won’t sail without you if there’s a delay.

The trade-off? You’ll likely pay more for the convenience and might miss out on hidden gems not on the cruise’s list.

Opting for local operators could save you some cash and offer a broader palette of experiences tailored to your interests.

A group of people on an open top bus.

But tread carefully: if you’re not back on time, the ship might leave without you unless the tour operator guarantees a timely return.

If you go the independent route, diving into reviews on platforms like Viator can offer a glimpse into what to expect regarding quality and reliability.

Some operators might even promise to get you back to the ship on time, adding a layer of security.

3. Group Tours vs. Private Excursions

Deciding whether to join a group tour or book a private excursion is crucial to planning your shore activities, as both options offer different experiences.

Group tours can be a wallet-friendly way to see the sights and provide a social atmosphere where you might meet other cruisers, making them an attractive choice for those travelling alone or looking to make new friends.

However, they tend to have fixed schedules and routes, which might not align with all your interests, and larger groups could lead to more waiting time and less attention from your guide.

A tour guide with a red flag, showing a group of men around a city.

On the other hand, private excursions allow for a customisable experience tailored to your specific interests. You can choose where you go, how long you spend there, and even when you start your day.

This personalised approach is perfect for those with particular sites or activities in mind and offers a depth of experience that can make your visit memorable. The downside is the cost, as private tours generally have a higher price tag than group tours.

When deciding, consider what’s most important to you: the types of sites you want to visit, your budget, and whether you’re looking to socialise.

If you lean towards a private tour, booking early is wise to secure a spot with a reputable guide.

4. Making the Most of Last-Minute Deals

Sometimes, the best deals for shore excursions come at the last minute. This approach requires flexibility but can lead to significant savings and unexpected discoveries.

A man and a woman on an open boat tour looking at a city.

Last-minute deals often occur because tour operators want to fill up unsold spots on their tours.

To grab these deals, check with local operators right after you dock or even the night before while still on the ship. Many cruise ports have kiosks or local tour operators set up near where you disembark, offering tours for that day at discounted rates.

It’s important to research the operator quickly, using your phone to check reviews. Also, be clear on what the tour includes and its duration to ensure you return ship on time.

While this method can be a bit of a gamble, it’s often worth it for the savings and the adventure of spontaneous choices.

Plus, it’s an opportunity to visit places or have experiences you might not have considered when planning in advance.

5. Utilise Technology and Apps

From maps and guides to deal-finding platforms, leveraging these tools can enhance your excursion planning. Websites and apps like Viator and TripAdvisor are fantastic starting points.

A man with a map laid out planning a trip.

They often feature exclusive deals on tours and activities, sometimes at a fraction of the price offered elsewhere. Also, these platforms provide user reviews, which are invaluable in gauging the quality and value of the excursions.

Another handy tool is the local tourism board’s website or app, which can offer up-to-date information on attractions, some of which might be free to visit.

Before you sail, download the apps you plan to use and familiarise yourself with their features.

Also, consider offline options or download maps and guides ahead of time, as internet access can be limited or expensive on the ship and in certain ports.

6. Free Walking Tours

Free walking tours are a fantastic way to explore a city’s main attractions under the guidance of a local without the usual cost associated with organised tours.

These tours are typically based on tips, allowing participants to pay what they feel the tour is worth at the end. This approach not only makes such tours accessible for every budget but also provides a more personal connection to the city.

Guides of free walking tours are often enthusiastic locals eager to share their deep knowledge and personal stories about their homes, offering insights you might not find elsewhere.

Besides being cost-effective, these tours offer flexibility in scheduling, a chance to meet fellow travellers, and a way to support local guides directly through your tips.

It’s an excellent option for those looking to get an overview of a city on a budget, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of the destination’s culture and history.

7. Create Your Own Shore Excursions

Designing your own shore excursion provides a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the local environment, tailored specifically to what interests you the most and the time you have available.

The naming ceremony for the ship has now been confirmed too, taking place in the Port of Barcelona on 23rd April 2024.

By this point, the ship has already been sailing for several weeks but this isn’t uncommon. Some cruise lines prefer to host a naming ceremony before the official maiden voyage, but others often like to let the ship get started, and work out any quirks or minor issues, before celebrating her officially.

Sun Princess is the largest ship built for Princess Cruises and features some amazing new features, including the glass-enclosed Dome and Park 19, a family-friendly activity zone. The ship also debuts several new bar and restaurant concepts.

Cruise Company Plans Huge Expansion With Eight New Ships

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has announced plans to build eight new state-of-the-art cruise ships over the next 12 years, bringing an additional 25,000 berths to its three cruise lines.

Norwegian Getaway

The ships will be split between the three brands owned by the company – Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceana Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

It was also announced that the company intends an expansion of private island Great Stirrup Cay, building a new pier capable of hosting multiple ships at once.

Four of the ships are planned for NCL. These will be the biggest of the new orders, with an estimated gross tonnage of 200,000 – still some way short of the biggest ships in the world, but a significant size increase from the largest ship in the NCL fleet, which is Norwegian Encore with a gross tonnage of 169,000.

It’s anticipated that these ships will be able to accommodate 5,000 passengers each, making up the bulk of the new berths for the fleet. They are expected to launch in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

Oceania Cruises will get two new ships in 2027 and 2029. These ships will have a gross tonnage of 86,000. The largest ships in the current Oceania fleet are the Allura-class ships at 67,817 GT.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will also get two new ships, including the first in 2026 and another to follow in 2029. These will host 850 passengers and have a gross tonnage of 77,000. Seven Seas Grandeur is the current largest ship in the fleet, with a gross tonnage of 56,199.

The company has secured most of the funding needed to build the luxury ships for Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and is seeking funding for the NCL ships – it’s expected this won’t be an issue.

The ships will be built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, which already built the Prima-class ships for NCL.

Are Casino Cruise Ships Worthy Of Considering

The whole leisure industry was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic a few years back, but these days are fully recovered. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the cruise industry, with ships once more making their way along the seas and rivers of the world, from the Yangtze to the Nile. There’s something for just about everyone to enjoy in these floating hotels, and one of the more recent additions to some cruise vessels is casino gaming.

Cruise Travel and Casinos

While certainly not universal, many cruise ships include a casino among their litany of entertainment options. Slot machines are the most popular gaming category at land-based casinos and are typically available at casinos that are hosted aboard a cruise ship. Card sharks will usually be able to find their game of choice, too, as poker and blackjack are top picks among table games, with roulette and craps often accessible as well. Because so many players on a ship are newcomers to betting, a cruise is the perfect setting to try new things, and this can make for an ideal setting to learn the ropes in a low-stress atmosphere.

One unique aspect of cruise ship casinos is that they are subject to a variety of national laws, which means gaming may well be impossible when in port. Playing when in international waters is more straightforward.

Online Casinos

In addition to playing games in person, many players like to place bets at online casinos. There are various advantages to this alternative means of betting, including the fact online casinos are open 24/7 and can be accessed at the player’s convenience. Because games are digital, there’s an effectively unlimited number of slots and tabletop games, while live dealer games replicate the atmosphere of a real casino without the hassle of travel time or opening hours. Many games have free demo modes that enable players to take a game for a test drive to see if they like it, and low-deposit real-money casinos with minimum deposit of as low as $1. Better yet, almost all online casinos offer generous promotions to new players, which greatly increase the chance of making profits.</p>

Enjoy New Experiences on a Cruise

One of the great pleasures of cruising is that it enables guests to participate in new activities and experience new diversions. These could be the start of a lifelong love affair with a new pastime or simply a one-off holiday amusement, much as many people who otherwise never gamble like to place wagers when visiting Las Vegas. Casinos are just one of the many forms of entertainment that cruise present for the delight of guests.

Trying out a wide array of new styles of cuisine is eminently possible while on a cruise, and is a great way to broaden one’s culinary horizons. For those who prefer liquid refreshments, cruise ships are often furnished with an array of bars, including sports or wine bars. Nightclubs are also a possible venue for relaxation and live music. Another diversion can come in the form of live performances, including musicals, magic shows, and comedy routines, bringing theatrical thrills to the audience. While not universal, many cruise ships have particular stars as the mainstay of their musical performances, which can be a highlight for guests.

In addition to excellent live entertainment options, there are more active types of diversion in which to participate. On a cruise, those with the energy to burn have plenty of choices, from sports courts to frolicking in the pool to have fun and stay in shape. The majority of cruise ships feature fitness centers which are free to use, making it easy to pump iron and build muscle or use exercise bikes and other machines to burn off calories and keep trimming. But for those who really like to take it easy, spas and wellness centers present the perfect opportunity to sink into tranquility and let one’s worries fade away. In short, casinos on cruise ships are a lot of fun and just one of many diversions and entertainment options available for guests.

Visiting Land-Based Casinos

The great advantage a cruise holds over other forms of vacation is its continual movement, which is why they are so popular from the rising power of China to the United States and all points in between. This unique form of getaway presents guests with consistently high-quality dining and accommodation while also providing new locations to explore without the hassle of arranging transportation. River cruises can see vessels take their passengers on famous waterways all over the world, including the Nile (arguably the most significant river in world history) and the Danube, which carves its path through ten European countries.

This means there’s an ever-changing array of cultural and historical sites to see on a cruise. Among these are live entertainment venues for musicals, concerts, dramas, tragedies, opera, and comedy. Travelers can also take the chance to visit brick-and-mortar casinos, so even guests on a cruise ship without a casino often have ample opportunity to try their hand at cards or slots while on the move.

The entertainment options of a cruise ship combined with the ever-changing location make them unbeatable when it comes to mixing convenience with luxury. Casino games are just one fun facet of this excellent approach to vacations.

Norwegian (NCLH) Orders 8 New Cruise Ships, Some 200,000 Gross Tons

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings just announced the biggest order in its history.    Eight new ships will be built for the three cruise lines operated by the company.

These eight new vessels will represent almost 25,000 berths in addition to a new class ship.

Norwegian Cruise Line expects to take delivery of four 200,000 gross ton ships with a capacity of 5,000 passengers each.  These deliveries are scheduled to take place in 2030, 2032, 2034, and 2036.

Right now, Norwegian’s largest ship is Norwegian Encore at 169,000 gross tons.

The size of this order and the increase in vessel size represents a renewed excitement for the cruise industry going forward.

In today’s press release the company revealed plans to build on the four Prima-class ships expected for delivery starting next year and through 2028.  Currently there are two Prima-class ships in service.

New Ships for Oceania and Regent

The new order will also include two new ships for another brand under NCLH, Oceania Cruises.  Oceania is expected to take delivery of two 86,000 gross tons vessels in 2027 and 2029, with each ship having a passenger capacity of 1,450.

This delivery will come after the success of the current largest ships with Oceania Cruises: Allura-class ships Vista and Allura (coming in 2025).  These ships measure 67,000 gross tons.

The ultra-luxury brand Regent Seven Seas Cruises will also be adding a couple ships to its fleet.  Two 77,000 gross ton ships are expected to be delivered to the cruise line in 2026 and 2029, each with a capacity of 850 passengers.

Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, expressed the company’s confidence going forward, stating,

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth. It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

The partnership with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will enable Norwegian to design and build these ships that will shape the next decade for the company.

A Two-Berth Pier Coming to Great Stirrup Cay

In addition to the news about order of 8 new ships, Norwegian also announced that a new pier at the company’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay, is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.

The new pier will be able to accommodate two large cruise ships at once and will cost about $150 million to build.
