Best Airline Carry-on Luggage Size Guide For 2024

Who knew we would worry so much about airline baggage size and extra fees? Do you know what size carry-on will be allowed for your next flight?

Experienced travelers understand you can only rely on one rule for some airlines. Most domestic airlines have a size limit close to 22″ x 14″ x 9″, counting handles and wheels. However, International Airlines often have a size restriction of 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches and often have a weight limit.

Airline Carry-on Luggage Size Guide

You can learn the specific luggage rules to make your trip smooth and avoid any issues with your luggage.

Key Takeaways

  • Most domestic airlines have a similar carry-on size limit: about 22″ x 14″ x 9″.
  • International Airlines often have a size restriction of 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches and a weight limit.
  • There is no one weight limit for carry-ons on major domestic airlines, but it varies on regional and international flights.
  • To avoid extra fees or gate-checking, use a carry-on suitcase no bigger than 21” for broad acceptance.
  • Personal items must be smaller than carry-on bags and fit under the seat in front of you.
  • Using space-saving accessories is an intelligent way to increase carry-on capacity.

Understanding Airline Carry-On Luggage Policies

Frequent travelers know how crucial it is to follow airline carry-on luggage rules. This cabin luggage size for most airlines makes travel easy and trouble-free. Airlines have strict carry-on luggage dimensions for safety and to best use cabin space.

Make sure to always check your specific carry on luggage size limits, as they can change and they may be tougher than you expected. This is especially true for budget airlines, who might have strict rules to make extra money from baggage fees. I’ve seen this firsthand and it can cost you an extra $100 at the gate just to board your flight.

Most airlines let you also bring another small bag, like a handbag or laptop bag. It just has to fit under the seat in front of you. As before, always check your specific airlines policies and your cabin category. Because what once was allowed in the past, is rapidly changing as airlines create new fee structures.

One thing to also note, is if your bag doesn’t fit or your flight is full, you may have to gate check your carry-on for no fee. I often hear this offered when traveling. The gate agent will offer passengers the opportunity to gate check their luggage before boarding time.

Airlines have different rules for carry-on bag size international standards. It’s wise to check with your airline before you pack. Before an international trip, you should learn about these carry-on luggage rules. Knowing them can make your travel smooth and save you from unexpected fees or having to repack at the airport.

Being careful with your packing is crucial for international flights. The carry-on size for these trips is often smaller. A safe bet for international carry-on size is about 21.5″ x 15.5″ x 9″. Always check your airline’s size rules to avoid extra charges.

Size Discrepancies and How to Navigate Them

Slight differences in carry-on rules can be tricky. For example, one airline might have stricter limits and charges for heavy bags than another. To plan better, you should know the carry-on sizes and restrictions for international flights.

Here’s a table showing carry-on dimensions and weight limits for major airlines:

Airline Carry-On Size (in) Weight Limit (lbs)
American Airlines 22 x 14 x 9 Unspecified
Alaska Airlines 22 x 14 x 9 Unspecified
Delta Air Lines 22 x 14 x 9 Limited on certain routes
Allegiant Air 22 x 16 x 10 Unspecified
United Airlines 22 x 14 x 9 Unspecified
Frontier Airlines 24 x 16 x 10 35
Southwest Airlines 24 x 16 x 10 Unspecified
Spirit Airlines 22 x 18 x 10 Unspecified
Air Canada 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 Unspecified
Asiana Airlines 21 x 16 x 8 22
Air France-KLM 21.7 x 13.8 x 9.9 26.4
British Airways 22 x 18 x 10 51
Emirates 22 x 15 x 8 15 – 22
Lufthansa 21.6 x 15.7 x 9 17.6
RyanAir 21.7 x 15.7 x 7.9 22
Qatar Airways 20 x 15 x 10  15
Qantas Airways 22 x 14 x 9 15
Virgin Atlantic 22 x 14 x 9  22
WestJet 21 x 15 x 9  Unspecified

Knowing the carry-on size rules is critical for a smooth trip. Always check your airline’s most current rules before you go to the airport.

The Risks of Overpacking: A Cautionary Tale

Have you ever had to check your carry-on at the last minute? This can lead to extra fees. Or worse, you might miss a connecting flight while your bag is sorted. Pack only the essentials to avoid this while keeping within the carry-on dimensions airlines set.

How Airlines Enforce Carry-On Size Restrictions

Airlines closely monitor carry-on sizes for everyone’s safety and convenience. You’ll see luggage sizers at check-in and gates. Your bag must fit in these to meet the airline carry-on size limits. Budget airlines may be stricter, charging more for bags that don’t comply.

Before you fly, ensure your luggage fits your airline’s carry-on dimensions. This avoids extra charges and speeds up boarding for everyone.

Maximizing Packing Space Within Carry Luggage Dimensions

Meeting carry-on baggage size dimensions can still mean efficient packing. Use innovative solutions to see fit within the carry-on the maximum size as a chance for clever travel. The right-best size carry-on bag has features to help use space well. It keeps things neat, organized, and easy to get to.

Packing cubes changes the game for saving space. These compact, light holders make your carry-on neat, dividing clothes or gear into sections. Compression bags shrink the size of big items like coats. By squeezing out air, you make extra space without breaking carry-on maximum size rules.

Here are some tips and tools for making the most of your carry-on:

  • Wear clothes you can mix, match, or pile up for different looks.
  • Rolling clothes saves more space and keeps them from wrinkling, compared to folding.
  • Go digital with books, papers, and fun stuff on digital gadgets instead of carrying them.

Stores like Amazon have many travel aids that fit within standard carry-on baggage size dimensions. Look at this table for some good picks:

Product Type Description Benefits
Packing Cubes Lightweight fabric containers in various sizes Organization, easy access, maximizes space
Compression Bags Plastic bags that can be vacuum-sealed Reduces the volume of soft goods
Travel Organizers Specialized pouches for electronics, toiletries, etc. Keeps small items secure and orderly

The best size carry-on bag is one you can easily handle which fits airline rules. Planning is vital for using your carry-on space well without going past limits.

Smart packing reduces stress, making trips smoother. Whether it’s for work or fun, getting the most from your carry-on means you’re ready for anything. And you won’t need to check in extra bags.

Personal Items vs. Carry-On Luggage: Understanding the Difference

Travel-wise, people understand something critical for flying. They grasp the difference between personal items and carry-on luggage. Individual items include purses, laptop bags, or little backpacks. These must fit under the seat in front of you. Carry-on luggage, on the other hand, is a more significant item. They must fit in the overhead bins and stick to size rules.

The size limit for carry-on bags is usually 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Staying within these limits ensures everyone has room and keeps things safe. However, airlines might have different rules. Some are stricter, while others are more flexible. So, always check your airline’s carry-on size rules before you go to the airport.

  • Size Matters: Always verify the carry-on luggage allowance with your airline’s guidelines.
  • Personal vs. Carry-On: Understand which items must be accessible during the flight.
  • Frequent Flyer Tip: Use a soft-sided personal item to exploit the under-seat space efficiently.

Following carry-on size rules is crucial. It helps make boarding quick and easy. Sticking to these limits makes your trip and others’ smoother. So, always measure your carry-on before leaving. Remember, a smooth trip starts with being prepared.

Selecting the Right Carry-On Luggage for Your Travel Needs

Selecting the right carry-on luggage is critical to a smooth trip. Whether you like the strength of hardshell carry-on luggage or the adaptability of softshell carry-on luggage, knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each helps you choose wisely.

Hardshell vs. Softshell: Pros and Cons

When considering how big carry-on luggage is, the best size for carry-on luggage usually depends on your travel habits. It also depends on the airline’s approved luggage size. Hardshell luggage protects well against impacts and is perfect for sensitive items. Yet, its rigid shape can be challenging to fit in with carry-on case size limits when complete. Softshell luggage, however, has expandable sections for extra items and is lighter.

Rolling Suitcases vs. Travel Backpacks: Convenience in Mobility

Rolling suitcases and carry-on options make moving through busy airports easy. They match backpack hand-carry size rules well and fit in overhead bins. Travel backpacks give you freedom, fit under the seat, and keep your hands free for tickets and passports.

Brands and Budget: Finding the Best Value

Choosing affordable carry on luggage that’s still high quality means looking at different brands. Some are for luxury travelers who want durability and style. Others provide good, cost-effective choices within airline approved luggage size. Consider the price, how long it lasts, and the warranty services when judging value.

Carry-On Prohibited Items and Security Measures

Knowing security rules for carry-on luggage is as important as knowing size limits. To move smoothly through airport security, you need to understand the TSA’s liquid limits and international carry-on rules that may affect your trip.

TSA Guidelines and the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) made rules for carry-on liquids to keep us safe and speed up screenings. The 3-1-1 rule lets you take travel-size liquids, gels, and aerosols, each under 3.4 ounces.

To be clear, here is the exact rule as written by the TSA: Liquids, gels and aerosols packed in carry-on must follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule: 3.4 ounces or less per container. 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag (all liquids must fit in bag) 1 bag per passenger.

To avoid problems, I try to ONLY pack any items like this in my checked luggage. I have seen many people have to throw items away or go through very detailed checks overseas where (what was allowed in the US) was not allowed in an international airport’s security check-point. Remember, you often have to go through other TSA like check-points at connecting airports overseas.

International Regulations for Carry-On Luggage

Traveling abroad means following different rules for carry-on luggage. Countries have their size limits and sometimes extra security steps. They often check not just your bag’s size and weight but also what’s in it, like electronics and batteries. It’s wise to look up these rules before you travel to avoid trouble at customs or security.

Here’s a quick list of carry-on sizes and liquid rules around the world:

Country/Region Liquid Limit Common Size Restriction (inches)
United States (TSA) 3.4 oz/container 22 x 14 x 9
European Union 100 ml/container 21.7 x 15.7 x 9.8
Canada 100 ml/container 21.5 x 15.5 x 9
Australia 100 ml/container 22 x 14 x 9
Asia (varies by country) 100 ml/container typical Varies widely

Following TSA and international rules keeps everyone safe and comfy when flying. Always check your airline’s rules for carry-ons before you pack. This makes sure you meet their specific size and content rules.

Final Thoughts

Knowing the right carry-on size for savvy travelers is key to a smooth trip. The common size is around 22″ x 14″ x 9″. But this isn’t the same for all airlines. It’s important to check your airline’s size rules to avoid any issues.

Being smart about packing can make your trip much more accessible. Please ensure your bags fit the overhead bin, as it helps prevent surprises at the gate. Knowing security rules for both U.S. and international flights also helps. This way, you can go through checkpoints quickly.

18 Worst Things to Pack on a Cruise (Banned Items to Leave at Home)

If you’re not careful about packing for your cruise, you could end up with a lot of extra “baggage”, the kind no one wants.

In this article, we’ll discuss what NOT to bring on your next cruise so that you can avoid making the same mistakes as many other travelers.

Mariner of the Seas Royal Caribbean ship departing from Port Miami

We’ve all seen those “Ultimate Packing List” articles, telling you exactly what you should bring on your cruise. These checklists allow you to make sure you don’t miss out on bringing the essentials.

But this article will be the exact opposite. We are going to compile the very worst cruise packing list of all time. In fact, bringing some of these items will put you in some hot water.

There are some things you cannot bring on a cruise ship and others that you just shouldn’t bring. This post will focus on things you are not allowed to bring on the ship, but you can also read our article on things you CAN bring but should leave at home anyway.

Weapons of any kind

Guns, ammunition, martial arts weapons, stun guns, knives, and switchblades are all prohibited from being brought on board the ship. Yes, you can be charged with a felony for bringing a stun gun onboard. No matter how innocent you might think it is, the cruise lines are not going to take any chances. These items will be confiscated at the security check point before you even get on board the ship.

Firearms are not permitted onboard cruise ships, even if they are in checked luggage or registered to you at home.

Some cruise lines also will not allow you to bring scissors on board if the blades are longer than four inches.

Some other items you are not allowed to bring include pepper spray, brass knuckles, night sticks, and even toy guns. A good rule of thumb is that if it looks like a weapon or could be construed as one, leave it at home.

Also, most ships will not let you bring handcuffs or any kind of restraints on board.

Illegal drugs and substances

Bringing recreational drugs onto a cruise ship is not a wise decision. It is strictly prohibited and can lead to serious consequences such as being kicked off the ship and facing legal charges.

Cruise lines have implemented various methods to prevent illegal drugs from being brought onboard. These include using x-rays, metal detectors, scanners, and drug-sniffing dogs to detect any illicit substances.

It is important to note that even if you have a valid prescription for medication, certain drugs may not be allowed on the ship. For instance, marijuana is not allowed on board. It is best to check with the cruise line beforehand and make sure you have all necessary documentation.

Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line will not allow CBD oil and CBD products on their ships. They state this is because they are not typically legal in many of the ports they visit.

Candles or incense

don't bring candles on a cruise ship

There are certain cabin rules that you will need to follow on a cruise ship. Although candles can be romantic and fragrant in your stateroom they are not allowed on board.

A fire is one of the biggest threats these ships face. Any lighting of incense is also not permitted so don’t even try to stuff these items in your suit case.

Irons and steamers

Nobody wants wrinkly clothes on a cruise, and it’s hard enough that most cruise lines don’t have self-service laundry with irons and ironing boards to use. But don’t pack your travel iron. Irons and steamers are not allowed on cruise ships and they will be confiscated.

Some cruise lines like Carnival have launderettes which have irons you can use. But for most other lines you will have to pay to have your clothes pressed.

What about curling irons? Most cruise lines will allow curling irons except for MSC Cruises and a few others.

I recommend packing some Downy Wrinkle Releaser or other type of spray to help combat those pesky wrinkles.

Camo clothing

People wearing camo clothing

Although cruise lines do not have an outright ban on camouflage clothing, it is not allowed in Caribbean countries where many cruise ships travel. And if you wear camo in one of these countries you can get arrested for impersonating an official.

This includes wearing camo pants, shirts, hats, and even camouflage accessories like purses and backpacks. So if you have a cruise itinerary to the Caribbean, leave the camo shorts in the closet at home.

Coffee maker and hot plates

There are plenty of places to get coffee on the cruise ship, so besides being unnecessary coffee makers are not allowed. The same goes for hot plates and hot pots as well. These are considered fire hazards and you won’t be allowed to even get them on the ship.

Crock pots also aren’t allowed. Yes, I have seen people try to bring them onboard and have also seen them many times on the confiscated items table on disembarkation day.

Hoverboards

Zooming around a cruise ship on a hoverboard does seem like fun, but it’s not going to happen. Hoverboards and any kid of self-balancing wheels will not be allowed on the ship. Also, skateboards and shoes with wheels built in will not be allowed.

Drones

Some cruise lines allow drones while others don't.

Some cruise lines will let you bring drones and others won’t, so this one could go either way. But even if a cruise line lets you bring a drone on the ship you will not be able to fly it while on the ship, and you must adhere to all local ordinances when in port.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean will still let you bring them for use on land only and outside of the port areas. Drones must also be kept with the chief security officer and can be checked out when you arrive in port. They also don’t want you using drones on any of their private destinations like Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee, Haiti.

Other cruise lines will allow you to keep drones in your cabin, but you can only use them when on shore and away from the port area. Drone policies are always in flux with cruise lines, so be sure to check with your cruise line ahead of your trip.

By the way, kites are not allowed either, so forget those fantasies about flying a kite off the back of the ship. Some cruise lines will let you use kites when in port.

HAM radios

Most cruise lines have a ban on HAM radios. Cruise ships have their own radio systems for communication and using a HAM radio could cause interruptions. Although, on Carnival’s website HAM radios are listed under “Exemptions and other considerations”, leaving the door open in certain circumstances.

Usually, it is up to the captain of the ship if you’re allowed to use it or not, but consult with your travel agent or cruise line rep before you decide to bring it.

Some cruise lines will specify that communication scanners and wideband receivers are not allowed on board.

Large speakers

Most cruise lines will not allow the large Bluetooth speakers that are becoming very popular these days. Public announcements need to be heard and could cause a safety risk if music from a portable speaker drowns out the announcements. On top of this, it’s just not polite to blast music in a public area.

Small Bluetooth speakers are typically allowed for private use in cabins, so feel free to bring one of those if you have to have your music.

Extension cords and surge protectors

surge protector power strips

Any kind of power strip with a surge protector is strictly prohibited. These can be fire hazards and mess with the ship’s own electrical system which is different from what you have at home.

Also, don’t pack any extension cords as these are usually not allowed on the ship as well. We all have a lot of devices to charge these days, but modern cruise ships tend to have more power outlets to keep your phone, tablet, computer, and camera charged up and ready to go.

Inflatable kiddie pools

Carnival’s website clearly states that inflatable kiddie pools are not permitted. I’ve seen the pictures of 8-foot kiddie pools on balconies and just wonder, “why?”. Cruise ships have plenty of space in the kid’s pool area.

If you’re wanting to bring a very small inflatable pool for a young child so they can have a bath in the shower area make sure you check with the cruise line first.

Perishable foods and meats

You might want to pack some goodies in your suitcase before your cruise, but Royal Caribbean put perishable foods on their list of prohibited items for a reason. There’s so much food on a cruise ship you can’t even fathom it.

Leave those homemade cookies and treats at home or with a neighbor. You will eat like royalty all week long on that cruise ship, so you definitely don’t need to pack any extra foods.

Some sports equipment

There are certain kinds of sports equipment that are either not allowed or must be kept in your stateroom. Most cruise lines will mention this equipment in general that cannot be brought on board, but there are exceptions.

Things like baseball bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, skateboards, bicycles, and even surfboards can sometimes be brought onto the ship but must not be used on the ship.

Many avid golfers will bring their clubs with them to certain destinations. As long as the golf bag and equipment can fit through the security scanners this is usually not a problem, but once again, the clubs must be kept in your stateroom.

Fireworks or any flammable liquids

Anything that can present a fire hazard will not be allowed on a cruise ship. You might be going on a cruise on New Year’s Eve or the 4th of July but don’t expect to bring any kind of fireworks or pyrotechnics with you. These items are strictly prohibited and you won’t even make it through the cruise terminal with them.

Hookah pipes

While some cruise lines and ships have designated smoking areas, Hookah pipes are typically not allowed. Remember, just because it may be legal in the United States or the state in which you live, cruise lines often have to adopt the rules and regulations of the countries of the ports of call.

Some sunscreens

Not all sunscreens are the same, and some cruise lines are putting a greater emphasis on disallowing sunscreens that are harmful to coral and fragile reef environments.

Sunscreens with oxybenzone, octocrylene and octinoxate are banned from US Virgin Islands. Some other places that have banned these sunscreens include Key West, Hawaii, Cozumel, and Bonaire just to name a few.

While these sunscreens are not explicitly banned by every cruise line, it’s the ports of call and regions that have placed regulations on them.

Here is a list of sunscreens that are considered “reef-safe”:

  • Manda Organic SPF 50 Sun Paste
  • Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
  • Pipette Mineral Sunscreen
  • Thinksport SPF 50 Sunscreen
  • All Good SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen Lotion
  • Babo Botanicals SPF 30 Clear Zinc Lotion
  • Suntegrity Natural Mineral Sunscreen
  • Badger SPF 30 Unscented Sunscreen Cream
  • Raw Elements SPF 30 Certified Natural Sunscreen
  • Stream2Sea SPF 30 Mineral Sunblock
  • Banana Boat Simply Protect SPF 50+ Sunscreen spray

Baby monitors

Baby monitors used to be on the ban list for several cruise lines, but the reasons have been highly-disputed. Now it seems that cruise lines have removed these monitors from the ban list, so they can be packed. But there are two things to point out.

First of all, many of these baby monitors will not operate very well with the metal walls of the ship. But the main issue here is that cruise lines don’t want you leaving your child in the cabin unattended and using the monitor as an excuse.

If you use the baby monitor because your children are staying in an adjoining cabin that’s one thing. But going out to eat at a specialty restaurant while you try to “monitor” your child remotely is a practice that is not permitted.

Final thoughts

The rules and regulations for what can be brought onto a cruise ship are always changing, so always check with your cruise line if you have specific questions about an item.

We hope this helps keep you out of trouble when going through security on embarkation day for your cruise.

What happens if you bring a banned item?

What happens if you bring a banned item on a cruise? If it if something that the cruise line bans but is 100% legal, then it will get confiscated and you will pick it up at a table when you get off the ship on disembarkation day.

If you are trying to bring something illegal on board, then it’s up to the local authorities. In other words, don’t even bother trying.

Cruise Line Remove Single Supplement on Four Itineraries and 500 Cabins

A cruise line has removed the single supplement on 500 cabins on river cruises in Europe.

Riviera River Cruises has eliminated the single supplement for cruises on four different  itineraries that will depart in August and October 2024. More than 500 cabins are available for this special promotion.

The cruises with single supplement-free cabins include:

  • Rhine Cruise to Switzerland: Eight days with seven visits and tours, starting at $2,399.
  • Burgundy, the River Rhône & Provence River Cruise: Eight days with seven visits and tours, starting at $1,999.

“Traditionally, we’ve offered a small number of cabins single supplement-free on each of our European river cruise departures, in addition to our dedicated solo traveler cruises,” said Marilyn Conroy, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing North America for Riviera River Cruises. “This August and October, we’re going further by offering more than 500 cabins supplement-free on a handful of Rhine and Rhône River itineraries. We know that demand for solo travel is increasing, and removing supplements on these departures will ensure even more travelers can experience the beauty of these waterways.”

Cruisers who sail solo normally have to pay double (or close to it) since all cruise fares are based on double occupancy.

With the elimination of the single supplement, solo cruisers can pay the same price per person as a couple who booked a similar cabin.

Riviera River Cruises offers a variety of cruises on rivers and waterways across Europe, including dedicated departures for solo travelers with no single supplement and themed and holiday season itineraries.

Urgent Search Underway For Missing Icon Of The Seas Passenger

A man has gone missing from the world’s biggest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, sparking a huge search from government teams.

Ariel shot of Icon of the Seas

Edmond Bradley Solomon (known as Brad), 66, was cruising with Royal Caribbean on a 7-night sailing, but went missing in the Mexican port of Cozumel.

Solomon, who suffers with frontotemporal dementia, is believed to have got in a taxi once separated from his family, trading his wrist watch for a trip to the beach. He went missing on Wednesday, 3rd April but has yet to be found.

His wife, Mimi, has remained in Cozumel while the search continues. Reports say that Edmond went missing after visiting a public bathroom in the cruise terminal area, while Mimi waited outside.

The cruise ship was obviously unable to remain in port beyond the normal times, with thousands of guests onboard.

There were five ships in port at Cozumel that day, which meant extremely high passenger numbers around the terminal. Celebrity Cruises had two ships in Cozumel – Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Ascent. There was also the Carnival Valor and Norwegian Prima.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Mimi with the costs of remaining in Cozumel during the search. At the time of writing, it has raised more than three times the initial target of $5,000.

How to Avoid Crowds on a Cruise Ship (12 Best Tips)

Certain areas of a cruise ship can get a little crowded.  And for those who want more solitude while on vacation it can be difficult to truly “get away”.

Factors like the time of day, daily activities, and ship-design bottlenecks can all contribute to a feeling of being crowded while at sea.

In this article will look at the best ways to avoid the crowds and enjoy a claustrophobia-free vacation.

Cruising is my all-time favorite mode of travel.  It allows you to unpack once, see exotic locations, and enjoy the same comfy bed and exquisite food without having to plan out every step of the way.

But I will admit, there have been times an overcrowded pool deck or crammed muster drill process added to some vacation stress.   I’m so thankful to whomever invented the e-muster drill, by the way.

Most first-time cruisers aren’t prepared for how crowded some of the mainstream cruise lines can be during certain aspects of the cruise.   From the embarkation process to the lido deck there are plenty of times a ship can feel more crowded than others.  And as much as we love our fellow passengers sometimes we just need a little space.

Here are some of the best ways to avoid the crowds on a cruise.

1. Make priority boarding a priority

Royal Caribbean ship on embarkation say from gangway
Boarding Harmony of the Seas. Photo credit: Cruise Fever

The embarkation process is so much smoother and faster than it was even 10 years ago.   I remember having to wait for two or three hours in the cruise terminal waiting to board the ship.   But even though things are a lot better these days there are still ways you can skip the lines and avoid the crowds.

Paying extra for priority boarding may seem like excess, but the sooner you can get on the ship the sooner you can start enjoying your vacation.  And there’s the extra perk of getting on a cruise ship that is pretty much empty.  This means you can hop in that pool, grab a free lounger in the perfect spot, or get a bite to eat at your favorite eatery right away – and all without any crowds.

Often, booking a suite will automatically give you the fast-track to boarding a ship before most everyone else.  More on this later.

2. Check in on the exact date check-in opens

Even if you don’t pay for priority boarding you can usually get an earlier boarding time by checking in as soon as your cruise line allows.  I’ve mentioned this many times in previous posts but it bears repeating.

Cruise lines split up boarding times so not everyone shows up at once.  This would make for a very crowded terminal.  But those earlier boarding times are on a first-come first-serve basis.  The sooner you complete the online check-in process the sooner you can grab that earlier boarding time.

Not every cruise ship is created equal.  And even some cruise ships within the same cruise line will offer more space per passenger than others.  This isn’t always that noticeable though.  The ship’s design and flow of passenger traffic play a major role in how crowded it feels.

Feel free to read my article that lists every cruise ship by its passenger to space ratio to get an idea of what cruise lines and cruise ships offer the most space.

You might be better off choosing a more premium line that prioritizes space over number of passengers.  Personally, I think it makes all the difference in the world when it doesn’t feel like I’m just bumping into people at every turn.

4. Book the ship-within-a-ship experience

The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line

Some cruise lines allow you to have a very different experience than the rest of the passengers by booking a more premium cabin with exclusive perks.  Norwegian has “The Haven” and MSC Cruises has the “Yacht Club” just to name a couple.  This allows you to have a separate pool, restaurant, sun deck, and other amenities that are only accessible to a select few on board.

This will definitely allow you to escape the crowded feeling you might get in other parts of the ship.  It costs a lot more, but for those who love the personal attention from the staff and more relaxed atmosphere it’s well worth it.

5. Enjoy some of those comfy lounges during off-peak hours

There are always quiet places to get away on a cruise ship.  Even on a full ship in the middle of a sea day you can always find a lounge or space that is virtually void of people.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest cruise news and deals: Sign Up

The key is to visit these different venues during non-peak hours.   Those same lounges that are bustling and full of people after dinner are pretty much empty throughout the day.  And some offer great views of the ocean from the front or back of the ship.

6. Get up early

It depends on the demographic of your cruise ship, but most people on a cruise will sleep in – at least a little.  Breakfast becomes more of a brunch when the 10am rush hits the buffet.

You can avoid a lot of crowds simply by rolling out of bed a little earlier and beating the rush both to breakfast and to the shore.

If you have to take a tender to the shore it can be quite crowded during certain times.  And there’s nothing you can do about it if the first tender doesn’t leave until 9-10am.  It will simply be crowded.

7. Don’t get off the ship until the masses have left

This is counterpoint to the above recommendation.   If you don’t want to get up early on a port day just wait until the crowds have left the ship.  This both allows you to enjoy the pools and hot tubs with little to no crowds and also allows you to enjoy a ship-to-shore process that is smooth and fast.

I know many cruisers who live by this principle.  They will have their pool days on port days and just visit the port later in the day after lunch.  This eliminates most crowds from what could be a busy day in port and allows you to enjoy an open lido deck.

8. Book a suite or larger balcony

Suite cabin on MSC cruise ship Meraviglia

Yes, I know this will make your cruise more expensive, but having a larger stateroom and bigger balcony to enjoy your cruise can enhance the whole experience.  Sailaways from your own suite or aft balcony (which are typically much larger) allow you to have a relaxing, crowd-free departure.

And when just getting back to the ship after a long day of exploring a destination it’s great to have some extra space to enjoy your solitude before dinner.

9. Take the stairs

Those elevators can get quite cramped for the claustrophobic.  And sometimes it feels like people want to test those weight limits with just how many people they can fit in there.

I don’t mind a crowded elevator myself, but I know some who will take the stairs just to avoid being too cramped.  And on top of this they get some exercise to justify eating a little more for dinner that night.

10. Go on off-the-beaten-path excursions

people hiking and taking a catamaran bout tour excursion

Some excursions on a cruise ship will be more popular than others.  And some ships will really cram in the numbers to a popular site.  But this makes it harder to really experience a destination or even get a picture without a ton of people in the way.

Many third-party companies offer wonderful shore excursions that can limit how many go on a tour.  This also allows you to ask more questions and get a personal experience.

Keep in mind that when you book an excursion through the cruise line the ship will not leave without you.  The same cannot be said for third-party excursions.  So give yourself plenty of time to get back.

11. Make port days ship days

If you really want to explore the ship away from the crowds you can just skip seeing the port altogether.  This is a better idea if you’ve already seen the destination before and just want a relaxing day.

In some of the more common ports like Nassau and Cozumel, not as many people get off the ship from what I’ve seen from personal experience.  But it’s still a night and day difference in how crowded the ship will be during those port days.

That’s the great thing about a cruise.  You can enjoy the vacation you want.  Don’t feel obligated to get off the ship or stay on the ship.  If you decide to stay on the ship there are always activities going on throughout the day as well.  There’s nothing like some midday trivia while enjoying ocean-views and sipping a cold beverage.

12. Try specialty dining

restaurant on harmony of the seas cruise ship

When trying to get away from those dinner time crowds specialty dining is a great option.  Not only will you avoid the crowds but you will also get more personalized service.  In my opinion the food just about everywhere on a cruise ship is fantastic.

Some people ask why go to a specialty dining restaurant when the food in the main dining room is just as good.  And while the quality in a specialty dining restaurant is a tier above the MDR, what you’re really paying for is service.  This extra attention to service comes with a more relaxed ambiance as well, and is a great way to enjoy a crowd-free meal.

Final Thoughts

One of the best parts of cruising is getting to know your fellow-passengers.  So I’m not in any way advocating you become a recluse during your trip.  But if the bustle of crowds seems even a little stressful in your mind I hope the tips above will help set you at ease.

What other ways can you avoid crowds?  Got any ideas?  Leave us a comment so we can all glean from your cruise knowledge!

The Top 10 Cruise-Obsessed Towns In The UK

A new study has revealed that Sutton is the town in the UK most obsessed with cruising, closely followed by Blackpool.

Southampton waterfront

The research was conducted by InsureMy, an insurance comparison website, which looked at Google search data over the past year to determine which towns and cities are searching for cruise holidays the most, analysing 20 different search terms.

Sutton came out on top, with an average of 1,136 searches of cruise terms per 100,000 residents every month. The top terms that the town searched for were “TUI cruise”, “Caribbean cruise”, and “cruise holidays”.

Blackpool wasn’t far behind, with 1,076 monthly searches for every 100,000 residents. The most popular search term for the seaside resort was “cruise deals”, suggesting a priority of finding the best prices.

Unsurprisingly, Southampton makes the list and is third, with 991 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. With most cruises in the UK departing from the city, it’s a great place to live as a cruise fan as you may even be in walking distance of a terminal!

The full top 10 is as follows:

Town/City Monthly searches per 100,000 residents
Sutton 1,136
Blackpool 1,071
Southampton 991
Mansfield 976
Wakefield 975
Wigan 971
Swansea 947
Doncaster 875
Burnley 861
Wrexham 800

While UK cities and towns may not be traditionally associated with cruise culture, there has been a growing interest and fascination with cruises in recent years. Despite their inland locations, cities like Mansfield and Wakefield have shown a surprising level of enthusiasm for cruising.

With regular searches for cruise-related information and the proximity to cruise terminals like Hull, these cities are embracing the cruise experience.

The allure of exploring new destinations, enjoying luxurious amenities, and experiencing the open sea has swayed the residents in these urban areas. As the popularity of cruises continues to rise globally, UK cities and towns are joining the trend and showcasing their newfound obsession with this form of holiday.

Stewart Barnett, Head of Marketing for InsureMy

Some of the top search terms across the UK are the expected ones such as “cruise deals” and “cruise holidays”, but also cruise lines such as “Norwegian Cruise Line”, “TUI cruise” and “Carnival cruise”. However, it’s not clear which were the top 20 terms checked by InsureMy and whether this included more cruise lines.

Understanding Alaska’s Unique Climate and Dress Code

Going on an Alaskan cruise means you’ll see the region’s stunning beauty. It’s crucial to adjust your Alaska cruise wardrobe essentials for varying weather. With cold glacier air and milder coastal weather, choosing the right attire is essential.

Daytime calls for casual clothes so you can explore freely. At night, the cruise comes alive. You’ll need a mix of comfort and style. Hence, knowing what to wear on an Alaskan cruise means finding a balance.

We have a list of items perfect for Alaska’s climate and the cruise’s dress code:

  • Layered clothes for warmth
  • Waterproof jackets for rain
  • Durable “Alaskan sneakers” for walking
  • Elegant outfits for evening events

Check out this table for Alaska cruise outfit ideas:

Climate Zone Daytime Attire Evening Wear
Glacial Regions Thermal layers, fleece tops, warm jackets Smart layers for warmth and style
Coastal Towns Breathable tops, pants, and water-resistant coats Casual but classy, with an extra layer for warmth
At Sea Cozy clothes and sturdy shoes Outfits that fit the cruise’s style, from casual to formal

Versatility is vital in Alaska’s unpredictable weather. Build an Alaska cruise wardrobe essentials set that can go from day to night. Always aim for comfort and the ability to move quickly during your cruise adventure.

Essential Clothing for an Unpredictable Weather

A summer cruise in Alaska is an adventure with amazing views and changing weather. To enjoy your trip, it’s important to plan your outfits carefully. Choosing the right clothes means thinking about comfort and how well they work for different conditions.

Layering is Key: What to Start With

Starting with the proper base layers is critical for staying comfortable. Choose T-shirts that wick away moisture and long thermal sleeves for different temperatures. Layering is essential for an Alaskan cruise. You can add fleece jackets, light vests, and sweatshirts to your bag. This way, you can adjust to the weather, whether watching whales or walking in Juneau.

Outerwear That Protects: Waterproof and Warm

When packing for an Alaska cruise, prepare for both sun and rain. A waterproof jacket is a must to stay dry during rain. Also, bring a warm parka for cold glacier visits. Remember to pack gloves and thick wool socks. You want to remember the beautiful sights, not how cold you were.

Footwear for Comfort and Dry Feet

Choosing the right shoes is very important for an Alaskan cruise. Waterproof hiking boots are great for exploring and staying safe on different grounds when you plan to go hiking or off the beaten path. For lighter days, waterproof sneakers are suitable for shore visits. They keep your feet dry while you enjoy the views. Make sure your shoes fit well to make walking more enjoyable.

Layer Category Essential Items Usage Tips
Base Layer Moisture-wicking T-shirts, Thermal long-sleeves Choose materials that retain warmth and disperse sweat.
Mid Layer Fleece jackets, Light vests, Sweatshirts Adjust layers according to activity level and current weather.
Outer Layer Waterproof jacket, Warm parka Please make sure the outer layer is roomy enough to layer underneath comfortably.
Accessories Gloves, Wool socks Invest in waterproof gloves and insulating socks for optimal warmth.
Footwear Waterproof hiking boots/sneakers You can break in new footwear before your trip to prevent blisters.

Choosing the Right Accessories and Travel Gear

Going on an Alaskan cruise means you need more than just the right clothes. You also need accessories and travel gear that match Alaska’s wild beauty and changing weather. Consider these must-have items for your Alaska cruise wardrobe to make your cruise even better. We’ve compiled a list of essentials that any savvy traveler should pack for a fantastic time in Alaska.

Optical Gear: Binoculars and Cameras

An Alaska cruise pack isn’t complete without gear to see far and wide. Alaska’s landscape is stunning, with ice-formed land and rich wildlife. A pair of top-notch binoculars is crucial. They help you see whales in the distance or a moose that’s far away. Also, get a camera with good zoom to capture the colors of the Northern Lights and the big ice fields.

Electronic Essentials: Chargers and Adapters

Don’t forget that staying charged is key in your cruise packing for Alaska. Make sure your chargers and adapters work with your devices. Also, consider a portable charger for long trips. It ensures your camera or phone stays on when you most need it.

Sun Protection and Insect Repellant Necessities

Sun protection and bug spray are crucial for your comfort and health. Remember to pack them in your Alaska cruise wardrobe. The sun can be intense off the glaciers, so bring broad-spectrum sunscreen and polarized sunglasses. Alaska’s mosquitoes are persistent. A good bug spray will keep your Alaska memories about its beauty, not the bugs.

Item Category Description Reason for Inclusion
Optical Gear Quality binoculars and camera with zoom lens Crucial for wildlife viewing and capturing the expansive Alaskan scenery
Electronic Essentials Device chargers, adapters, and portable charger Keeps devices powered up for photos and communication during long trips
Sun Protection Broad-spectrum sunscreen and polarized sunglasses Protection from the intense sun, especially on glacier tours
Insect Repellent Powerful bug spray Necessary for comfort during onshore exploration and evening events

Dress Code for Alaska Cruise Evenings and Formal Nights

Knowing what to wear on an Alaska cruise is critical to having fun at night. Let’s dive into choosing the right clothes for every evening on your cruise.

On casual nights, wear something comfy but lovely—like dresses or intelligent jeans with a neat top or sweater. These moments are about being casual yet a bit stylish. Striking a balance between laid-back and dressed-up is critical.

Formal nights offer a chance to dress up. You can wear everything from cocktail dresses to suits. This is when Alaska cruise packing tips became useful. They show you how to change your look with different accessories.

Here’s a simple Holland America Alaska cruise packing list for the evenings:

Evening Type Women’s Attire Men’s Attire
Casual Maxi dresses, blouses, casual skirts, or trousers Polo shirts, intelligent jeans, Kakis
Smart Casual Stylish dresses, elegant blouses with skirts or trousers Dress shirts, khakis or smart slacks, sports coats (optional)
Formal (‘Gala’ Nights) Elegant gowns, cocktail dresses, dressy separates Suits or dinner jackets, tuxedos

Activity-Based Wear: Gearing Up for Excursions

Heading to Alaska means an adventure and the right clothes are essential. This is true whether you plan to kayak along pristine waters or walk through thick forests.

Specialty Gear for Onshore Adventures

Once you leave the ship, wear water-resistant pants and layers that you can change. Choose clothes for an Alaska cruise that are both light and strong. This way, they’re easy to move in and keep you protected. Having many layers means you’re ready for any weather or activity, letting you enjoy your adventure without worrying about being unprepared.

What to Wear for Glacier and Wildlife Viewing

Seeing glaciers and animals up close is unique and requires the right clothes. You’ll need down vests, gloves, and hats that keep you warm. Wear strong, waterproof shoes, too. They should keep your feet warm and help you walk safely. Thinking about clothes like this helps you prepare a packing list for an Alaska cruise.

Activity Essential Gear Additional Recommendations
Glacier Viewing Down vest, insulated hat, waterproof gloves UV-protective sunglasses, binoculars for distant glaciers
Wildlife Watching Sturdy, waterproof shoes, binoculars Camera with a zoom lens for capturing wildlife moments
Hiking Water-resistant pants, breathable layers Insect repellent, portable water filter
Kayaking Quick-dry clothing, water shoes Dry bag to protect personal items

Packing wisely means thinking about what you’ll be doing. Whether challenging terrain, Kayaking or just strolling through downtown, dress right for the Alaskan wild.

Cozy Extras Travel blanket, pillow, eye mask Extra comfort for a good night’s sleep

Packing for Alaska Cruise Onboard Entertainment

An Alaska cruise offers breathtaking views and fun activities. The right gear can make your time on the ship better. Pack things to relax, like swimwear for the pool and a good book.

Leisure and Relaxation: Swimwear and Lounging Attire

The hot tubs, spas and heated pools on the ship are a cozy break. You can just pack your swimwear for these moments. Also, comfy clothes like shorts and tank tops are essential for relaxation.

Keeping Busy During Sea Days: Books and Games

Sea days are for fun and personal time. A good book or a card game can make it better. Pack various books and games for entertaining sea days.

Entertainment Category Description Examples
Reading Material Books and e-books for quiet afternoons or cozy evenings. Travel guides, novels, and e-readers with preloaded books.
Gaming Physical and electronic games for interactive fun with fellow passengers. Playing cards, portable board games, travel-sized video games.
Creative Activities Items that allow for self-expression or learning a new skill. Sketchbooks, journals, language learning apps.
Relaxation Aids Accessories to enhance relaxation during sea days. Noise-cancelling headphones, crossword puzzles, adult coloring books.

Having active and passive options means every sea day can be perfect, regardless of the weather.

Managing Luggage: Tips for Packing Light and Efficient

You’ll need a mix of clothes for different weather, but you must keep your luggage light. The key is finding a balance between being prepared and packing efficiently. Here are some tips to help you manage your cruise luggage effectively.

Utilizing Shipboard Laundry Services

To pack less, use the ship’s laundry services. This lets you wear fresh clothes without filling your suitcase. With options for full-service or self-service laundry, you can pack fewer items, keeping your travel wardrobe refreshed and not spending extra on more luggage. Having less luggage can also make it easier walking through airports and during transfers. Many cruises pack extra and often have to pay the airlines a $100 for an extra bag each direction. Packing less and using the shipboard laundry services can often cost you less and be more convienent when traveling.

Planning Outfits to Mix and Match

Packing efficiently is both an art and a science, especially for clothing. Choose clothes that can be mixed and matched. Selecting a few versatile pieces reduces the total number of items you need. Add different accessories to effortlessly switch your look from day to night.

What Not to Pack: Saving Space and Hassle

When you’re getting ready for an Alaska cruise, it’s crucial to think about what you don’t need. Many people make the mistake of packing too much. To help you avoid overpacking, we’ll talk about what items you can leave at home. This way, you can pack smart and have a worry-free vacation.

  • Bulky winter coats – Opt for adding or removing layers as needed.
  • Too many formal outfits – Most cruises offer casual dining options.
  • Multiple pairs of shoes – Choose versatile footwear suitable for different occasions.
  • Large electronics – Favor compact devices that serve multiple functions.

Packing is not just about what you bring, but how you pack it. Smart packing means understanding what you really need and how to use your space well. Next, we’ll show a table that compares must-haves and things you don’t need.

Essentials Non-Essentials
Layered clothing Heavy winter jackets
Waterproof boots Multiple dress shoes
Travel-size toiletries Full-size product bottles
Sunscreen and sunglasses Excessive makeup kits
Portable battery pack A multitude of electronic gadgets
Compact umbrella or raincoat Various bulky outerwear pieces

Smart packing is critical to having a smooth and enjoyable trip for your Alaska cruise. It’s about something other than bringing everything. It’s about choosing what’s essential and what’s unnecessary. This approach helps you save space and reduce stress. In turn, your travel experience becomes better and more flexible.

Final Thoughts

To truly enjoy your unforgettable Alaska cruise, packing smart is critical. You’ll face different weather, from foggy fjords to sunny decks. So, wear layers you can add or remove to stay comfy and ready for anything. That way, your Alaska cruise experience focuses on fun and discovery, not being uncomfortable or unprepared.

Accessories also greatly enhance your experience. For instance, a good pair of binoculars brings Alaska’s wild animals up close. And the right camera lens lets you capture its breathtaking scenery forever. So, packing functional gear is crucial for a whole Alaska cruise adventure. The correct items help you deeply connect with the fantastic places you’ll see.

Make sure your luggage helps, not hinders, your trip. Choose items that have multiple uses and skip what’s not essential. A well-prepared suitcase shows you’re ready for the journey and mindful of travel needs. With carefully picked gear and clothes, your trip through the fantastic nature of The Last Frontier will be as impressive as your destination.
