A 20-year-old male has gone overboard on a Royal Caribbean cruise, sparking extensive searches.
The man was sailing on Liberty of the Seas with his family when he reportedly jumped from the ship at around 4am on Thursday 4th April.
The crew were immediately alerted and searches began for around 6 hours, before the Miami Coast Guard took over and the cruise ship continued on her journey back to Fort Lauderdale.
The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the U.S. Coast Guard, who has taken over the search. Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.
Royal Caribbean statement
There are unconfirmed reports that the guest had been drinking, and jumped from the ship following a short argument with his father.
Most of the big cruise lines are yet to install Man Overboard (MOB) detection systems, despite the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 requiring ships to integrate technology for this reason. Recent developments have seen the technology become more reliable, and so more ships will likely start adding it in the future.
At the time of writing, the man still has not been found.

Every year, 20 million people go on cruise vacations. They enjoy the vast oceans and different places. But there’s something important behind all the fun. The cruise ship muster drill is vital to staying safe at sea. Though many people don’t notice it, this drill is essential for ensuring cruise ship safety and preparedness. It’s not just for show. The muster drill is a planned exercise that helps everyone know how to survive at sea.
Cruise Ship Muster Drills
The importance of muster drills is huge; it prepares passengers for emergencies. Knowing what to expect during the muster drill is critical for everyone on the cruise. The drill shows everyone where to go and what to do if there’s a danger. This isn’t just a routine. It’s the core of how to handle emergencies on the ocean.
Introduction to Muster Drills on Cruise Ships
An introduction to muster drills is crucial for passenger safety on cruise ships. These drills ensure everyone understands cruise ship safety procedures. They prepare holidaymakers to be active in ensuring their safety.
The purpose of muster drills is more than just a basic orientation. They teach passengers and crew about necessary emergency steps. This way, everyone knows where to go and what to do if there’s an emergency. This reduces fear and confusion.
Muster drills are detailed and cover many emergency procedures. They teach how to find and wear life jackets, signals for gathering at muster stations, and how to use the ship’s safety tools and escape paths.
These drills must be taken seriously. They aim to make passengers feel secure and knowledgeable, and knowing what to do in an emergency can make a big difference.
In these drills, experienced crew members show what to do during emergencies. They guide people to muster stations. These are particular areas where everyone meets before an evacuation.
By doing these muster drills, cruise lines show they care about everyone’s safety. With a clear understanding of everyone’s roles, these drills create a culture of readiness. This is essential for keeping passengers safe and secure on a cruise.
The Legal Implications and Requirements for Muster Drills

Safety protocols are essential in the maritime industry, especially for cruise ships. Strict international rules define legal requirements for muster drills. These rules ensure everyone on board is safe. Cruise operators must follow these rules closely. Not doing so can have serious legal consequences.
International Convention Safety Standards
International convention safety standards form the foundation of maritime safety rules. The Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention is critical here. SOLAS covers many aspects of passenger safety, including mandatory muster drills. These drills help crew and passengers know what to do in an emergency. This is critical for a quick evacuation if there’s a problem at sea.

Safety of Navigation
Muster drills contribute to overall navigational safety by ensuring passenger readiness.
These standards keep passengers safe and hold cruise lines accountable for their safety measures. Following these conventions is vital in daily operations.
Role of the Coast Guard and Port State Authorities
The Coast Guard and Port State Authorities’ role is critical in ensuring sea safety. They check that maritime operations, like muster drills, follow legal guidelines. They also issue certifications proving ships are ready to sail safely.
, a critical Port State Authority, plays a significant role in maintaining maritime law. They often perform unexpected drills and checks. Their work emphasizes the importance of following international convention safety standards. Their efforts help create a safety-focused culture aboard each vessel.
How a Cruise Ship Muster Drill is Conducted
Keeping passengers safe is crucial for cruise lines. This is why conducting a muster drill is standard. It’s all about teaching step-by-step emergency preparedness. This plan gives people the know-how to handle possible emergencies at sea.
Step-by-Step Emergency Preparedness
Muster drills are effective because they provide clear, direct instructions. They begin with passengers joining to watch a video about life jackets. Next, they learn about emergency alarms.
Then, everyone heads to their muster stations for more details on what to do in an emergency. Here, travelers learn about how to leave the ship if needed. These steps are crucial to making sure everyone knows the plan.

E-muster Drills: The Evolution of Safety Procedures
The classic muster drill has become the e-muster drill thanks to new tech. Now, people can learn about safety through videos in their rooms and on mobile apps. These digital options make getting important safety info easier while keeping things flexible for passengers.
Traditional Muster Drill
E-muster Drill
Gathering of all passengers at specific stations
Remote check-in using mobile technology
Manual roll call by the crew
Automated attendance tracking
Group safety demonstrations
Individualized learning through videos
The evolution of safety procedures shows the cruise industry’s focus on improving emergency readiness and valuing the passenger experience. Whether through traditional or electronic drills, the aim is precise. They want everyone ready to react swiftly and wisely if an emergency happens.
The Importance of Muster Stations During Emergencies
During emergencies on a cruise ship, getting passengers out safely is key; muster stations are central to this. Each passenger gets a specific station based on where they are on the ship. This helps keep things clear and reduces panic in tough times.
Evacuation Routes and Lifeboat Assignments
Muster stations help people get to their lifeboats in an orderly way. They guide everyone to safety smoothly and make sure lifeboats are filled up properly. This method of getting everyone off the ship is crucial for safety at sea.
Effectiveness of Muster Stations in Crisis Situations
The design and location of muster stations show careful safety planning. Studies of emergencies show that well-run stations make a difference. They’re not just meeting spots but places for information and instructions, vital for saving lives.
Drills and clear signs for muster stations help people know what to do. This prep work is part of why emergency plans work well. Gathering at muster stations helps the crew count everyone and speeds up rescue efforts.
Understanding muster stations and their role is vital for passengers. They’re part of a safety plan that looks out for everyone. When everyone works together during these drills, the ship is safer. It also builds trust in the emergency processes and the crew’s guidance.
Cruise Ship Safety Drill: The Critical Training for Passengers
Going on a cruise is fun, with relaxation and entertainment waiting. But safety is a top priority. Passengers go through a critical training. This focuses on emergency steps. Cruise lines are serious about keeping everyone safe. That’s why the cruise ship safety drill is so important during the trip.

For guests who need distilled water, that can also be purchased at the price of $3.25 per gallon plus 18% delivery fee. Carnival recommends that guests contact the cruise line prior to the cruise so they can ensure that the ship has an adequate supply.
Carnival Cruise Line first banned bottled water from being brought on their ships in June 2015. When they did, they charged $2.99 for a 12-pack if purchased prior to the cruise.

If you want the very best accommodation and service on a cruise, you’ll want to book a suite. That’s true across all cruise lines, and Celebrity Cruises is no different.
Celebrity Cruises’ suites are beautiful, and the Celebrity suite benefits are excellent too. Of course, they don’t come cheap, but if you’re looking for a truly upmarket cruise experience then they certainly are worthy of your attention.
In this guide, I’ll explain everything you need to know about the different options for a suite on Celebrity Cruises, and what you get with each.
Celebrity Cruises Suite Types
There are a lot of different options for suites on a Celebrity cruise, but not all feature on every ship.
In total, there are 10 different suite types in the main Celebrity Cruises fleet. Here’s a look at what they are, and which ships they feature on:

Celebrity Cruises Suite Benefits
All of the suites in the main Celebrity Cruises fleet are part of the Retreat, and with that comes a number of perks and benefits.
These are the Celebrity Suite Perks that you’ll enjoy across all of the suites:
1. Dine at Luminae
The Celebrity ships have some fantastic restaurants onboard, but one of the most revered is Luminae, a luxury fine dining venue open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with menus crafted by renowned chef Daniel Boulud.
The restaurant is exclusively for the use of suite guests, and many feel that it is worth the upgrade alone. The menu options here won’t be found in any other restaurants on the ship.
Suite guests can still choose to dine in the Main Dining Room if they prefer, and they’re also permitted to book at Blu, a restaurant normally reserved for Aqua Class guests, provided space is available.
2. Access to The Retreat Lounge & Retreat Sundeck
Suite guests get to enjoy the quieter exclusive areas of the ship, including the Retreat Lounge and Retreat Sundeck.
The Retreat Lounge is a modern space that services snacks and complimentary drinks, and is perfect for reading a book, having a pre-dinner get-together with other suite guests, or just winding down in peace.
It’s also where you’ll find the Concierge Desk for suite guests.
The Retreat Sundeck is a private sundeck area with upgraded sun loungers and a towel attendant who will provide towels and other amenities. Snacks and drinks are available here too.
The Retreat Sundeck on the Edge-class ships has a pool, while other ships have a water feature or hot tub.
3. Premium Drinks Package
All suite guests automatically get the Premium Drinks Package, normally worth over $100 per person, per day.
This entitles you to enjoy drinks up to the value of $17, as often as you would like, as well as a 20% discount on bottles of wine.
Of course, you can enjoy wine by the glass for free, so that discount perk is only for the serious connoisseurs who have their eye on a specific bottle.
4. Premium Wi-Fi Package
All guests in The Retreat get a Premium Wi-Fi package included with their fare too, normally worth at least $26.99 per day, depending on your ship and itinerary.
The Premium Wi-Fi is the best internet package available on the ship, and offers pretty impressive speeds, as all ships have Starlink satellite internet.
You’ll be able to video call, share photos and videos, and stream content as much as you want. If you’re on an Edge-class ship you can also stream content from your device to your suite TV.
5. Butler and Concierge Services
Guests staying in a suite get to enjoy the services of a butler team along with concierge services.
Your butler handles all requests to do with your suite. They’ll be able to serve you dinner from the restaurants onboard, shine your shoes, or arrange for your laundry to be collected and cleaned, as well as restock your minibar when needed.
The concierge team handles any requests for the rest of the ship, such as booking you a table at a speciality restaurant or arranging your shore excursions.
Suite guests can also use the concierge before they cruise – there’s a dedicated phone number to call to make bookings in advance or make other special requests.
6. Priority Check-in, Departure & Tenders
Suite guests can enjoy priority perks on the first and last day of their cruise, as well as at any tender ports.
On embarkation day, suite guests get priority check-in, meaning you aren’t queuing for long in the terminal and will be on the ship quickly.
When the cruise is over, you can disembark as a priority too, which can be highly advantageous if you’re trying to beat the rush to drive out of the terminal or find a cab to take you to the airport.
If your cruise has any tender ports – where the ship anchors out at sea and uses tender boats to ferry guests back and forth to shore – suite guests can get priority for boarding a tender to the port.
You won’t get priority for the return journey, though.
7. Reserved Theatre Seating
Celebrity Cruises’ formal nights are called Evening Chic Nights, and it’s when guests like to put on their best outfits and enjoy all the features of the ship. It’s a fun atmosphere, and very elegant.
It’s also where many of the facilities on the ship tend to get busier, as everyone onboard likes to join in.
So on these Evening Chic nights, suite guests can enjoy reserved theatre seating, so that they don’t miss out on a great view for the night’s entertainment.
8. Complimentary In-Suite Dining
Suite guests can enjoy complimentary dining in their suite 24 hours a day.
This isn’t just a snack-based room service menu though – they can enjoy a full dining service, with meals delivered from their favourite restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
If you don’t feel like joining the rest of your shipmates, you can choose whatever meals you like and they’ll be served to you in the relaxing surroundings of your suite.
9. Welcome Champagne or Sparkling Wine
Suite guests will enjoy a welcome bottle of either Champagne or sparkling wine when they board their cruise.
10. Complimentary In-Suite Coffees
Coffee-lovers can rejoice, as suite guests will have a range of coffee options available to make in their suite, including some speciality drinks.
You can have coffee delivered if you prefer, but if you want a disturbance-free morning, then you aren’t limited to standard coffee sachets.
11. Fresh Fruit Deliveries On Request
Any time you’re in the mood for some fresh fruit, just let your butler team know and they will bring it to your suite to enjoy.
12. Luxury Suite Amenities
Each suite is home to a host of luxurious amenities, elevating your experience to new heights. Some of these are grander than others, and will depend on the specific suite you book. You might enjoy full marble bathrooms, or whirlpool baths.
You’ll definitely get to enjoy Celebrity’s most premium eXhale bedding, including luxurious plush duvets, fine cotton sheets and a pillow menu to help you get the best night’s sleep. Good luck getting out of bed to enjoy all the other suite perks!
Suite guests will also enjoy plush slippers, bathrobes to use during the cruise, and a range of premium bathroom toiletries.
13. Use of Umbrella & Binoculars
Guests in all suites are able to request a golf umbrella and a set of binoculars to use during the cruise.
Hopefully, the umbrella isn’t needed, but the binoculars are a quality set that you can use to really enjoy the view – great for Alaska cruises.
You can’t keep them, though you can purchase them (or a set like them) if you really can’t part with them.
Premium Celebrity Suite Benefits
There are a selection of suite benefits that only apply to the top suites across the fleet:
Iconic Suites
Edge Villas
Penthouse Suites
Reflection Suites
Signature Suites
Royal Suites
1. Unlimited Speciality Dining with Preferred Seating
Speciality dining restaurants on a Celebrity cruise ship normally have an additional fee – a cover charge that guests have to pay to dine there.
But in these suites, you can enjoy these restaurants at no extra cost, as many times as you want. You can even have the food delivered to your suite, if you prefer.
However, if you do dine in the restaurants, you’ll also get to take advantage of preferred seating, getting not just the best food on the ship but also the best seats in each venue.
The only restaurant where you won’t get priority seating is Blu, since Aqua Class guests always get first priority here.
2. VIP Canapes
On request, you’ll be able to enjoy a selection of delectable canapes delivered to your suite by your butler.
The range of canapes will vary by ship and sailing, but they are all premium options to suit a range of tastes – perfect whether you are just relaxing in your own suite before heading out to dinner, or if you want to host a little in-suite party for the evening.
3. Complimentary Drinks In-Suite
You’ll already enjoy the complimentary Premium Drinks package as part of your cruise, but you don’t even need to leave your suite to enjoy free drinks when you’re a guest in one of these top-tier suites.
Your in-suite fridge will be stocked up with complimentary bottles of water, sodas and beers, and will be topped up daily to make sure you never run out. Not only that, but at the start of your cruise you’ll be given two bottles of premium spirits that you can enjoy during the cruise as well.
With the spirit bottles and the in-fridge sodas acting as mixers, along with those VIP canapes, you have everything you need for your party – or just for you to enjoy as you soak up the view each night.
4. Complimentary Laundry Service
Guests staying in these top-tier suites can enjoy free laundry services twice per cruise.
If you want to pack light, you can just ask your butler to arrange your laundry to be completed, and you won’t need to pay the usual fee. It’ll be delivered back to your room the following day, cleaned and pressed for you.
5. Priority Luggage Delivery
Guests staying in a suite get the benefit of priority luggage delivery, so you won’t be waiting long for your cases to arrive on embarkation day.
You can even ask your butler to unpack for you when the cases do arrive, if you don’t mind them handling your delicates.
Celebrity Aqua Sky Suite Benefits
The Aqua Sky Suites have a couple of unique benefits that you won’t get with any other suite. That’s because they are part of both The Retreat and the Aqua Class.
As well as the regular suite perks you’d already get, you can also enjoy:
Unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite (Edge-class ships) or Persian Garden (Millennium and Solstice-class ships)
In-room fitness amenities including yoga mats
Discounts on spa treatments and exercise classes
Priority booking for Blu, the Aqua Class restaurant
Celebrity Move Up Suite Benefits
Anyone who books a suite via the Celebrity Cruises Move Up upgrade programme will get most of the in-suite benefits, but extra perks will remain as they were with the original booking.
Celebrity’s Move Up programme lets you bid for an upgrade once you’ve booked a cruise. You can often secure a suite for much less than you would’ve otherwise paid, if they have availability.
But while you’ll enjoy all the perks tied to the room, you won’t get things like Premium Drinks Packages or Premium Wi-Fi for free. You’ll need to pay for those separately, or you won’t get them.
You don’t have to pay for them – if you don’t plan on drinking much and don’t care about the WiFi then you can just enjoy all the other suite benefits as normal.
Celebrity Galapagos Expedition Suite Perks
The perks you get are a little different on the Expedition ships, though they bear a lot of similarities with the main fleet.
On Celebrity Xploration, suite guests enjoy:
A stocked mini bar
Use of wet suits and snorkeling equipment
Fine Egyptian linens
The perks on Celebrity Xpedition and Celebrity Flora include:
A free refillable water bottle
Stocked minibar
Daily treats delivered to your suite including locally sourced chocolates
Champagne or sparkling wine on arrival
Complimentary backpack and poncho
Laundry services twice per sailing
Full in-suite dinner service
While these lists of perks aren’t as extensive as those in the main fleet, remember that these ships are designed more for the adventurous, and you’ll be spending more time ashore exploring.
They still bring that premium Celebrity Cruises feel to the suites, but the priority is very much on enjoying the destination rather than the suite accommodations.
Which Suite to Choose?
The best suite depends on so many factors, including what kind of budget you’re working with and how often you plan on cruising. The better suites do have some amazing features and are truly stunning, but if booking one of them would limit your ability to cruise again for a long time, it might be better to choose an entry-level suite and cruise twice instead.
The Iconic Suites and Penthouse Suites are particularly pricey. If you want the premium suite experience, but don’t have an uncapped budget, then it may be better to look at the Edge Villas or Royal Suites (or the Reflection or Signature Suites, if cruising on Celebrity Reflection).
Then you’ll get all the best perks, but at a lower cost. Royal Suites are often less than half the price of Iconic Suites, and around 60% the price of a Penthouse Suite.
Suite Types Explained
Iconic Suites
The best suites in the fleet, Iconic Suites sit above the ship’s bridge and offer amazing panoramic views. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a huge amount of space, you’ll love the luxury feel that they offer.
Highlights of Iconic Suites include an expansive terrace with hot tub and a double daybed, a second whirlpool inside the main bathroom, and even a private butler’s pantry for any treats you wish to enjoy during the cruise.
Edge Villas
Edge Villas are two-storey suites with a private tiered terrace that includes its own three-foot-deep plunge pool, along with a marble bathroom that has a whirlpool tub and a separate walk-in shower. The villas offer direct access to The Retreat Sundeck too, making them a great choice for relaxing either in-suite or on the more spacious deck.
Penthouse Suites
The Penthouse Suites are stunning suite options, offering a huge amount of space including multiple bathrooms and an expansive terrace area. Penthouse Suites are the best suites you can book on Millennium-class and Solstice-class ships. They have a dining area that seats 8, and a separate lounge – ample space for hosting a small party.
Reflection Suites
The Reflection Suites are all about light and space – situated in the corner of the ship, they have higher ceilings than regular suites and full-height glass doors and windows, making for a beautifully bright space. The bathroom even has a cantilevered glass shower that juts out over the sea, making for quite the wake-up.
Signature Suites
The Signature Suites don’t offer a particular theme, but offer some fantastic amenities for guests including high ceilings and a spacious veranda, which includes lounge seating along with an outdoor tub with a rain shower over.
Royal Suites
The Royal Suites are bright, modern and beautifully appointed. They have one bedroom and one bathroom, along with a separate living space. While not as expansive as some of the bigger suites on the ships, they do come with a host of perks, including a whirlpool bath and dual sinks on select ships.
Horizon Suites
Available exclusively on Celebrity Silhouette, the Horizon Suites are spacious and comfortable, including a veranda with lounge seating. You’ll get a separate living space and an impressive king-size bed in the bedroom, as well as a huge TV to enjoy.
Celebrity Suites
Larger than the Sky Suites, the Celebrity Suites offer floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and a cosy, contemporary living space separated from the bedroom by sliding doors. The sleek bathrooms feature marble-style accents, while plants help to add a bright and colourful touch to the room.
Aqua Sky Suites
The Aqua Sky Suites are quite unique in that they combine the suite experience with Aqua Class perks. These suites are aimed at those who enjoy the spa or fitness facilities onboard, with appropriate theming and extra little touches for the health-conscious.
Sky Suites
The entry-level suite options, Sky Suites are still a fantastic upgrade on a regular stateroom. You get a lot more space including room for a king-size bed, a comfortable sitting area with sofa, and a well-appointed bathroom with bathtub and some luxury touches.
Expedition Suites
The expedition ships for Celebrity are more individual. While some types of suite are shared with the main fleet, they aren’t as spacious, and they don’t come with the same perks.
Celebrity Xpedition has the following suites:
Penthouse Suites
Royal Suites
Xpedition Suites
Junior Suites
Celebrity Xploration has only one suite option:
Celebrity Flora has:
Penthouse Suites
Royal Suites
Ultimate Sky Suites with Infinite Veranda
Premium Sky Suites with Infinite Veranda
Sky Suites with Infinite Veranda
Sky Suites
Sky Suite with Infinite Veranda on Celebrity Flora
Final Word
No matter which Celebrity suite you settle on, you’re going to enjoy an incredible time with some fantastic benefits. But not all suites are equal – the Celebrity Sky Suite perks are not the same as the Celebrity Royal Suite benefits, and you’ll get more if you choose a higher class of suite.
Also, many of the perks are something you could pay for anyway. Only a handful are truly exclusive to suite guests, so bear that in mind if you’re torn between booking a regular stateroom or upgrading to a suite.
But then also remember that the suites are more spacious and have luxury amenities. Nobody said it was an easy choice!

Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival are two very popular cruise lines, sailing to destinations all over the world and offering great food, service and entertainment.
So trying to decide between the two of them can be a little bit tough! If you’ve never sailed with them before, how do you know which one you should pick?
In this guide, I’ll compare both cruise lines on all the essential features, to hopefully make it that little bit easier for you to reach a decision and find the one that’s the best fit for you and your travelling party.
Ships
Both cruise lines have a large fleet of ships, though Carnival’s is bigger.
NCL has 19 ships currently sailing, with another four ships on order, due to be delivered between 2025 and 2028.
Carnival’s fleet consists of 26 ships currently sailing, and one more that is due to join.
NCL Ships
There are currently nine classes of ship in the NCL fleet, with a tenth on the way:
Prima Plus Class – four ships on order, likely accommodating 3,500 passengers
Prima Class – two ships accommodating 3,200 passengers
Breakaway Plus Subclass – four ships accommodating 3,900 to 4,200 passengers
Breakaway Class – two ships accommodating 4,000 passengers
Epic Class – one ship that accommodates 4,100 passengers
Jewel Class – four ships accommodating 2,400 passengers
Pride of America Class – one ship accommodating 2,200 passengers
Leo Class – one ship accommodating 2,000 passengers
Dawn Class – two ships accommodating 2,300 passengers
Sun Class – two ships accommodating 2,000 passengers
The oldest ship currently sailing for NCL is the Norwegian Spirit, which was first launched in 1998 as the SuperStar Leo and joined Norwegian Cruise Line in 2004.
The longest-serving ship in the fleet is a tie between Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Star, which both launched for NCL in 2001.
The newest ship in the fleet is the Norwegian Viva, which launched in 2023.
Carnival has nine different classes of cruise ship:
Excel Class – three ships that can carry around 5,300 guests
Venice Class – two ships accommodating 4,200 guests
Vista Class – three ships accommodating 4,000 guests
Dream Class – three ships accommodating 3,700 guests
Splendor Class – one ship accommodating 3,000 guests
Conquest Class – five ships accommodating 3,000 guests
Spirit Class – five ships accommodating around 2,200 guests
Sunshine Class – three ships accommodating 3,000 guests
Fantasy Class – two ships accommodating 2,100 guests
The oldest ship in the fleet is the Carnival Sunshine, part of the Sunshine Class. The ship and class both used to be named Destiny when she first launched in 1996, until a rebrand in 2013.
The newest ship in the Carnival fleet is Carnival Jubilee, which launched right at the end of 2023.
In terms of ship size, there isn’t a lot between the two fleets. Carnival does have bigger ships – the Excel Class is significantly larger than NCL’s biggest Breakaway Plus ships, but it’s not like you could call NCL’s fleet small by any means.
Across both fleets, you’ll have plenty of choice for dining and entertainment, and neither have small ships with fewer than 1,500 passengers if you were hoping for a really quiet experience with a more intimate feel.
Destinations
Both NCL and Carnival sail all over the world, with plenty of exciting destinations to get excited over. The cruise lines have a large presence in the Caribbean, but there are many other options should you wish to explore more of the world.

NCL Destinations
When you’re cruising with NCL, you really are spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing an embarkation port – there are 56 different options for you to choose from for beginning your cruise.
This includes the major ports that you would expect in North America and Europe, but also global ports such as Manila in the Philippines, Doha in Qatar, and even Le Havre for Paris – a popular port of call, but rarely used for the start of a cruise.
Cruises from the UK are available, departing from Southampton, and you aren’t just limited to cruises during the summer months (though options out of season are a little more restricted – don’t expect to have a lot of cruises available in winter).
NCL does have a private island resort in the Bahamas, called Great Stirrup Cay. A number of cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas will include this resort, offering guests a relaxing haven without worrying about crowds.
Carnival Destinations
Compared to NCL, you’re a little more restricted with the embarkation ports for Carnival – there are 21 available, which is still a good range, though most of these are in the US. Carnival cruises from the big ports in Florida, but also from New Orleans, Texas and LA as well as offering Alaska cruises.
You can book Carnival cruises from the UK but these are very limited – there isn’t a ship that regularly cruises from the country.
Carnival’s private islands include Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay, and both destinations have great spaces to unwind and relax along with a range of exciting activities to try.
Which to Choose?
There are certain regions that are better served by one of these two cruise lines. NCL has ships sailing around Africa, the Pacific Coast and South America, which you won’t be able to enjoy with Carnival, along with more choices when it comes to European cruises and cruises to Asia.
Carnival has more options for the Caribbean, Mexico and the South Pacific, so if you want a tropical getaway then you might find a better-suited date or itinerary with them.
Otherwise, it’ll come down more to the price and the features of the ship, so let’s keep going.
Staterooms and Suites
At a basic level, cruise lines aren’t too dissimilar when it comes to accommodation options. You’ll have the option of choosing between inside, oceanview or balcony staterooms, or upgrading to a suite and getting additional perks.
Room sizes might vary between cruise lines, or there may be some layout quirks, but these tend to be on a ship-by-ship basis rather than at cruise line level.
Between NCL and Carnival, there isn’t one cruise line that clearly outshines the other for these simple choices.
Instead, we can look at the more unique accommodation options available for each cruise line, since they may have more of a bearing on your decision.
NCL Staterooms and Suites
Here’s a look at some of the notable NCL cabins and suites:
1. The Haven
The Haven is an exclusive zone on NCL ships that’s designed for a bit more luxury. You’ll find high-end suites with private balconies, offering that extra touch of exclusivity. But it’s not just about the room; The Haven comes with added perks to elevate your cruise game.
When you book The Haven, you’re in for a step up in the cruise experience. You have a butler to cater to any requests, and there’s a special lounge and restaurant exclusively for Haven guests.
Plus, don’t miss the private sundeck and pool – your own serene spot on the ship.
2. Club Balcony
Club Balcony Suites are what NCL calls their Mini-Suites. These offer a spacious accommodation option, with up to an extra 80 square feet compared to a regular Balcony stateroom, and you get some additional perks and amenities too.
If you want to get a taste of the suite life, without paying the high prices for a stay in The Haven, these are a great option.
3. Studio Rooms
This is one of the best reasons to consider booking an NCL cruise – the cruise line has some of the best options for solo travellers.
So many cruise lines treat single guests as an afterthought, while NCL is actively increasing the number of solo studio rooms available across the fleet. Not only do you get a great rate, but there’s also a Studio Lounge that’s aimed at solo guests.
Don’t get me wrong – these rooms are tiny! But if you don’t need a lot of space, then being able to cruise without super-high supplements is a big win.
Carnival Staterooms and Suites
Carnival has a range of ‘themed’ staterooms and suites that have additional perks, depending on the type of cruiser you are.
1. Cloud 9 Spa Staterooms
The Cloud 9 Spa staterooms and suites are located right next to the Cloud 9 Spa on the ship, but it’s not just about the convenience of having the spa on your doorstep.
The rooms themselves are themed around the spa, including themed decor designed to help you feel relaxed. You also get free access to the Thermal Suite when staying in these rooms, and exclusive packages you can book.
What’s interesting is that NCL used to offer something similar, with a range of Spa Staterooms and Suites. But as of January 2024, the cruise line made the decision to remove them, recategorising the rooms as regular staterooms instead.
2. Family Harbor Staterooms
I’m sure you can guess who these staterooms and suites are aimed at. Guests staying in a Family Harbor room will enjoy fun nautical theming in the room itself, and have access to the nearby Family Harbor Lounge, where families can enjoy a relaxed breakfast, snacks throughout the day, and a selection of board games.
Again, NCL has something slightly similar with Family Balcony Staterooms, but they don’t have special theming, nor is there a special lounge either – the rooms are just closer to the kids’ club and pool deck.
3. Havana Staterooms
Choosing a Havana stateroom or suite grants you access to the Havana area of the ship, which is a peaceful outdoor area with its own pool and bar.
You can also book Havana Cabana rooms, which include a private outdoor cabana space – beautiful and luxurious.
Which to Choose?
If you’re likely to choose a regular stateroom or suite, there’s little to choose between NCL and Carnival.
But the specialist room options are worth exploring. If you do love the spa, or you want a fun family-themed room, Carnival has some great choices, though NCL’s Spa rooms are also good. But for solo travellers, NCL’s options are unrivalled.
Food
Looking for a cruise line that offers plenty of variety when it comes to food? With both NCL and Carnival, you’re unlikely to be disappointed.
NCL Food
NCL was one of the pioneer cruise lines for the concept of Freestyle Dining – abandoning the idea of only having set dining times in the main restaurants, and allowing guests more flexibility on when to eat, and who with.
That concept lives on, so you don’t have to worry about fitting in your evening plans around your set time.
There are plenty of casual options available onboard too, including the buffet and various venues for a lighter bite.
Plus, each ship has a great range of speciality restaurants to choose between. Like with many cruise ships, you’ll be able to enjoy a great steakhouse, or a seafood venue, but depending on your ship you may also find Mexican cuisine, a Brazilian steakhouse (with carved meats brought to your table), or a fine-dining French restaurant.
Carnival Food
Carnival offers a similar level of variety and flexibility. You can enjoy fixed dining times if you’d prefer that, with a choice of two sittings, or opt for You Time open seating if you’d rather be flexible.
Similar to NCL, you have a lot of options for casual and speciality dining, so whether you’re in the mood for a quick lunch or a more formal dinner as a family, you’re very well catered for.
Carnival especially stands out for its more casual venues such as Guy’s Burger Joint and Shaq’s Big Chicken.
Which to Choose?
Neither NCL or Carnival are renowned for having the finest dining at sea, but you’ll still enjoy great food in the main dining rooms, casual venues and speciality restaurants.
NCL perhaps edges it for the variety of table-service dinner restaurants, whereas Carnival’s casual venues are slightly more varied than on NCL. But picky eaters won’t suffer on either cruise line.
Onboard Activities
Both NCL and Carnival are cruise lines known for their fun – but which is the best option?
NCL Activities
NCL ships are packed with activities to enjoy, including bowling alleys, mini golf, some thrilling water slides, rock climbing walls, sports and more.
There’s laser tag and VR gaming too, if you want to enjoy innovative tech-based games, along with the largest ropes course at sea when you’re feeling particularly active.
But the highlight has to be the go-karting tracks available on the latest ships – and these aren’t simple loops. Race around multi-storey courses with spectacular views out to sea – just don’t get distracted around those tight corners!
Carnival Activities
Carnival also has some exciting activities unique to the cruise line, including the first roller coaster at sea – Bolt.
There’s also the Skyride, which is a pedal-powered ride around the top deck offering some stunning views. Again, these are only available on the very latest ships, so always check what your specific ship includes.
Carnival has a lot of classic activities for guests to enjoy too, including bingo, quizzes, a video arcade for kids (and big kids) and a casino. There are also some great water slides on many of the ships, and splash zones for younger guests.
Which to Choose?
NCL and Carnival love to wow guests with their onboard activities, so if you want this to form part of your decision when choosing between them, you’ll have to go on the specifics – are you more of a go-karting person, or a roller coaster fan?
Entertainment
Whether it’s game shows, musical marvels, or hearty laughs, both NCL and Carnival provide all the entertainment you could need for your cruise holiday.
NCL Entertainment
NCL has some of the best musicals at sea in its theatres, including licensed productions of Broadway favourites. If you love Jersey Boys or Six, you’re in for a real treat when you see them on selected NCL ships.
There’s also the very popular Howl at the Moon singalong show, and Burn The Floor – the sizzling Latin and ballroom dance company that performs on several ships.
Alongside those, you get great comedy and game shows too, including Deal or No Deal and Wheel of Fortune.
Carnival Entertainment
Carnival has a great range of entertainment too, and while you won’t find the big-name licensed musicals onboard, you will get shows that are of the same standard, and that incorporate many of your favourite songs too.
Carnival has a great range of comedians too, and has licensed game shows such as Family Feud and – again – Deal or No Deal if you want to get up on stage and maybe win some prizes!
Which to Choose?
There’s very little to choose between the cruise lines for entertainment – both excel in big theatre shows, comedy, and even your favourite game shows.
The only difference is that NCL has a couple of licensed musicals you may already know and love, but these only appear on selected ships anyway, so be careful if you make your decision based on that.
Kids Facilities
If you want to cruise with your whole family, both NCL and Carnival have great kids’ facilities to enjoy.
NCL Kids’ Facilities
NCL offers two different kids’ clubs – Splash Academy for children and pre-teens, and Entourage for those aged 13-17. Each has a range of themed activities, with games, competitions, crafts and more for the younger kids, and plenty of parties, gaming, and movies for the teens.
While kids will generally be grouped by age, be aware that NCL doesn’t have separate spaces for age groups within those categories, so 17-year-olds might be sharing the same hang-out spaces as a 13-year-old.
Carnival Kids’ Facilities
Carnival’s family cruise facilities are bolstered by a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, so don’t be surprised if you bump into Thing 1 and Thing 2 around the ship – parades and meet-and-greets are a regular occurrence.
The kids’ clubs have themed activities incorporating the characters too, while teens get two separate spaces (Circle C for 12 to 14-year-olds, and Club O2 for 15 to 17-year-olds) where they can hang out and enjoy activities such as karaoke parties and even a Carnival Prom.
Which to Choose?
Carnival’s kids’ facilities are a little better than NCL’s, since you have different spaces for older and younger teens, and then children can enjoy interactions with characters from the world of Dr. Seuss. NCL is still good, and there’s plenty for kids to enjoy around the ship too, but Carnival edges this one.
Cruiser Demographics
There are slightly different demographics onboard the two cruise lines, and this may play a part when deciding on which is right for you.
NCL Demographics
NCL has quite a young demographic onboard, but that’s young by cruise standards – the average age of guests onboard will be between 30 and 50.
You’ll get a good mix of solo travellers, couples and families, and while there’s a fun atmosphere onboard it’s also quite relaxing too. If you don’t want to be constantly partying day and night, NCL’s a good choice – there are plenty of parties to enjoy, but ample quiet spaces too.
Carnival Demographics
The demographic onboard a Carnival ship can vary depending on the season, the ship and the itinerary. It’s definitely a family-fun cruise line a lot of the time, but a lot of younger adults also view it as a party cruise line, especially around Spring Break.
Don’t expect a quiet atmosphere, regardless – whether it’s from kids running wild, or the adults.
Price
Price is obviously important when choosing your cruise – so let’s compare.
NCL Prices
NCL’s pricing is a little tricky for comparison, because there are several fares available. You can choose a cruise-only fare, or you might prefer to upgrade to the Free at Sea offer, which gets you a selection of extra benefits including free drinks, speciality dining, shore excursion credits and limited free WiFi minutes.
Free at Sea Plus is also available with even better versions of those perks.
As a guide for just a cruise-only fare, expect to pay between £100/$125 and £150/$190 per person, per night for a cruise on one of the newest ships in the fleet on a 7-night Caribbean cruise.

Don’t miss the latest NCL offers…
One thing to note is that negative reviews of NCL cruises tend to mention the “nickel-and-diming” onboard – as in, the wide range of extra charges you have to pay for different activities or experiences.
In truth, there isn’t a whole lot of difference between NCL and Carnival in terms of the extras you have to pay, but perhaps because Carnival is a little cheaper for the base fare, people are more forgiving.
Carnival Prices
Carnival’s prices are a little easier to understand, though with one caveat – the advertised prices you see when first browsing don’t tend to include port fees and taxes, so always take an advertised price with a pinch of salt.
They are, typically, quite cheap though, unless booking a very popular date on the newest, biggest ships.
As a guide, expect to pay between £85/$105 and £105/$135 per person, per night for a 7-night Caribbean cruise on Carnival Celebration, one of the newer Excel-class ships.

The Verdict
It’s a tough call on whether NCL or Carnival is the best option for your cruise. Both can have a similar vibe onboard, depending on the sailing, and both have great accommodation, dining options and entertainment.
Carnival tends to be a little ‘louder’ onboard, either because of an increased number of families or because of the party atmosphere.
NCL is still very welcoming to families and offers a lot of fun, but with maybe a touch more sophistication, and young couples who want to unwind will likely find that it’s a more relaxing experience.
Remember though that a lot of the best features for both cruise lines are only available on the larger, newer ships – don’t assume that choosing a cruise line is the end of your decision-making, as the specific ship will matter just as much!

MSC World America has been carefully designed to help reduce her impact on the environment. The ship runs on LNG, a lower-emissions fuel and is ready for renewable energy sources. Shore power connectivity, when available, reduces emissions as the engines can be switched off in port. Smart technology is used throughout the ship to ensure guests can travel in comfort while keeping energy and water use low. Everything that we can is recycled on board, and even the propellors are designed to minimise noise so as not to disturb marine life when sailing.

MSC Armonia is currently stuck in the Port of Barcelona due to problems with visas for 69 passengers onboard.
The passengers – all from Bolivia – were sailing from South America and intended to disembark in the Spanish port, but while their documentation was examined and judged to be correct in Brazil, it’s now been found to be ineligible and so the guests aren’t able to enter the Schengen zone.
The visa issue is not just affecting those passengers – the 1,500-passenger capacity ship is due to carry on the cruise to Corsica, Civitavecchia and then only the Eastern Med before concluding in Venice – and so the other passengers onboard are facing cancelled ports of call if the issue can’t be resolved.
We are currently working with the Spanish authorities to manage a situation with a number of guests from Bolivia that includes families and children…As a result, these guests have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination. The ship has remained in the port while we work with the relevant authorities to find a solution to this complex issue.
MSC Cruises spokesperson
At the moment, no updates have been given on the rest of the cruise itinerary, with the cruise line working closely with the Bolivian Foreign Ministry to try and resolve the issue quickly.
While missed ports of call aren’t uncommon in cruising, for a cruise to cut short an itinerary by more than a day due to visa issues would be a significant event, and would be a big financial hit for the cruise line, as it would have to reimburse all the other passengers for part of their fare along with any missed excursions.
Hopefully, the issue is resolved quickly and the ship can continue, while the Bolivian passengers are permitted to disembark.

What are the 10 most requested items from cruise passengers once they get to their cabin?
We recently asked our followers on social media what they usually ask from their cabin steward.
There’s nothing like the excitement and nervous bustle of embarkation day. You’re checking out the ship, taking care of the e-muster drill, making a few dinner reservations, and finally your cabins are open.
Some cruisers like to drop off their carry-on luggage and leave, but sometimes you get to meet your cruise cabin steward right away.
Sponsored Links
Everyone has their own way of cruising. I don’t usually ask of anything much from my cabin steward, but many cruisers have very specific requests.
We received almost 700 comments on our question on our Facebook page.
The exact question was this: “When you first meet your cabin steward, what’s the first thing you ask for?”
After sorting through all of these insightful and interesting comments I organized the most common answers and listed them below.
Here are 10 things cruisers most often request from their cabin stewards. Starting with the most requested item…
1. Ice
This was by far the most requested item. With responses like “ice every day” or “ice in the bucket at night” regular cruisers made clear that keeping their beverages cold while enjoying some time on their balcony was a high priority. Almost 25% of all replies mentioned asking for ice from the cabin steward.
2. Extra Towels
Towels were the second most requested item. Whether it’s extra towels for use in the cabin bathroom or on the pool deck, passengers like to be prepared. Some liked to have double the towels and then have them washed after two days instead of every day.
3. Extra Pillows
Cruisers like to be comfy, and sometimes the included pillows in a cruise cabin just don’t cut it. Some cruise lines can offer different types of pillows as well if the pillows on your bed don’t fit your firmness preference. Most of the cruise travelers that made this request wanted at least two more pillows in the cabin.
Another “extra” on the list, a few more hangers were often requested, especially on longer cruises. One of the best parts of cruising is that you can unpack once and see several destinations on a vacation. But no one wants to run out of hangers while unpacking and putting clothes in the closet. Also, because cruise cabins don’t have ironing boards and irons, hanging up your clothing can help keep the wrinkles out.

5. Their Name
By far my favorite answer in the comments, asking a cabin steward for their name or how to pronounce their name is a great way to show them you care. In fact, the many replies that mentioned asking for their stewards name or introducing themselves showed me just how awesome our cruise community at Cruise Fever really is.
Some of the more premium cruise lines will already have bathrobes in the cabin, but even mainstream lines will often offer additional bathrobes upon request. According to Carnival’s website, “bathrobes will be provided during turndown service on the first evening of the cruise, upon request through your Stateroom Attendant.” Dozens of cruisers in our comments mentioned asking for bathrobes, and it was the sixth most requested item.
7. Mattress Topper
Many first-time cruisers or newbies to this style of vacationing don’t even realize you can request a mattress topper from a cabin steward. But for those who need a little extra cushion on that cruise cabin bed, mattress toppers are available. There are only so many on each cruise though, so you should make this request as soon as you can if it’s really something you need to sleep soundly.
8. Fan
I recommend bringing your own portable travel fan if you need this to sleep or be comfortable in your cabin. But if you forget, some cruise lines have a few you can borrow for the cruise. It’s first come first serve and not every ship may have them, but it’s an item several of our followers requested on every cruise.
9. Blanket
An extra blanket is often requested on Alaska cruises for passengers with a balcony. But sometimes cruise travelers just want some extra comfort from home. This is often requested especially if one of the passengers in the cabin likes it on the cooler side and the other just wants to keep warm. Even on a Caribbean cruise it can still get chilly in March or October.
10. Specific Cleaning Times
Now that most cruise lines have limited the cleaning of staterooms to once per day, cabin stewards will usually ask passengers what time of day they would like their cabin serviced. Most veteran cruisers have a routine and know exactly when they will be out of their cabin for a while so they will let the steward know right away.
