How to Eat Vegan on MSC Cruises (With Real Food Photos)

As a vegan, I’ve found that most cruise lines are excellent for providing a range of vegan options. Most, but not all.

So, can you eat vegan on MSC Cruises?

MSC Cruises vegan food

I’ve cruised with MSC Cruises four times between 2018 and 2024 and the vegan catering has certainly changed – but for better or worse?

Eating Vegan with MSC

MSC Cruises caters for vegans very well. You can request a vegan menu in the main dining rooms and you’ll find plenty of options in the buffet too with mock meats used in certain dishes and plant-based milks available on request.

Like most cruise ships, MSC Cruises’ ships have three dining options:

  • Main Dining Rooms – Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, here you can enjoy three-course sit-down meals in elegant surroundings.
  • Buffet – A casual self-service restaurant that’s open around the clock for meals and snacks
  • Speciality Restaurants – For an extra charge, you may opt to dine in a special restaurant such as Japanese or Mexican

Booking an MSC Cruise as a Vegan

When you booked your cruise, just advise your travel agent you’re vegan and they will add a note to the booking. This is always a good thing to do with any dietary requirements or other special requests.

Vegan Options in the Main Dining Rooms

The main dining rooms on MSC Cruises are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

When I cruised in 2023 there was no vegan menu, so on my latest cruise on MSC Euribia in 2024, I was really surprised to see that there was indeed a vegan menu available!

The menu shows today and tomorrow, which is perfect because you can base your decision about where to eat tomorrow based on what’s on the menu.

MSC Cruises vegan menu

The food was delicious and the portion sizes were very generous too.

Here’s an example of the food at dinner… Yum!

Even if you have the vegan menu, ask to see the regular menu too. You’ll often find that there’s a vegan option on there too, so you’ll have a nice choice.

Here’s an example of a dinner menu…

Example MSC Dinner Menu

As my 2024 MSC Cruise was only two nights, I didn’t eat breakfast in the main dining room. So I can’t comment on if they have any thing special for vegans there now.

But, here’s an example MSC breakfast menu from last year…

MSC Cruises breakfast menu

Possible vegan breakfast options in the main dining room:

  • Bread or toast with margarine or jam
  • Cereal with soya milk
  • Vegetables and potatoes
  • Fruit

Again, I’m not sure if there’s a different vegan menu for lunch, but I expect there would be. I did eat in the main dining room for lunch on the first day, but I had no idea to ask for a vegan menu as it’s not mentioned anywhere online.

Still, I managed to find accidentally vegan options on the regular menu – spring rolls, a veggie burger and fries (minus the cheese) and some sorbet.

The three-course lunch menu in the main dining room changes every day. Anything vegan is labelled as such, and you can ask the waiter to adapt anything else.

Usually, a starter could be adapted to be vegan. This usually meant a salad without any meat, cheese, and substituting the dressing for olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Sometimes, the soup is accidentally vegan, but not labelled as such.

Here’s an example MSC menu for lunch:

MSC Cruises lunch menu

Example vegan mains at lunch

  • Stuffed calzone with vegetables, tomato and soft tofu
  • Steamed jasmine rice with red beans, crispy tortillas and sweet potato puree
  • Couscous Moroccan-style with vegetables, raisins and almonds

This vegan calzone I had was lovely. It was more like a pasty than a pizza, but I really enjoyed it.

vegan Calzone on MSC Virtuosa

The Bread Basket

At the start of your meal, a basket of bread rolls will be offered.

On my 2024 cruise on MSC Euribia, the waiter would just leave the whole basket of bread on the table for us to enjoy!

The bread is so delicious that I sometimes opted for two or three pieces of bread instead of a starter.

Butter is given by default, but you may instead request vegan margarine or olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The oil and vinegar are delicious with the freshly-baked bread.

TIP: Ask for oil and balsamic vinegar with your bread

MSC Cruises Main Dining Room Food Photos

The food in the main dining room on MSC Cruises is almost always delicious, in my opinion.

I found that servings can be a little on the small side sometimes, so if you have a large appetite you may wish to ask for a side serving of vegetables or chips. The chips are really good!

Here are the vegan dinners I enjoyed in the main dining room during my cruise MSC Virtuosa…

Day One:

Day Two: Elegant Night

Day Three: Mediterranean Night

Day Four:

Kids Menu

There weren’t a whole lot of vegan-friendly options on the kids’ menu, which is the same every day. If you have vegan kids you’ll want to speak to the main dining room staff to make sure that they can make something for your children for the following day.

Aside from the vegetable soup, mixed vegetables, roast potatoes, chips and fruit, you could always request something from the adults’ menu if you wish.

MSC Cruises kids menu

My kids are vegetarians and very fussy eaters. So my usual plan is to take the kids to the buffet early in the evening, and then drop them off in the kids’ club while we head to the main dining room for late dining without them at 8.15 pm.

My Review of MSC Main Dining Room Vegan Options

All of the food that I ate in the main dining room was delicious. Everything was very fresh and healthy.

A few times I have had non-vegan food placed down in front of me by mistake, so I would advise anyone to always check before tucking in if you’re unsure of anything.

The first time you visit the main dining room, be sure to ask your waiter to see a vegan menu. It’s also good to plan your meals for the next day. If you’re not keen on salads and sorbets, you can ask in advance for something else.

Vegan Options in the Buffet

Another fantastic change that I’ve noticed on MSC Cruises is that there are now vegan labels in the buffet. Hooray!

MSC Cruises vegan labels in buffet

I’m so happy that MSC Cruises has made this change, as it makes choosing food so much easier.

Some things that you would expect to be vegan, are labelled as vegetarian. Sometimes, I would think – “What on earth could be in this that’s not vegan?”

I wonder if some of these may be a mistake, or perhaps cross-contamination by being prepared in the same area as milk products that has led to vegetarian rather than vegan labelling on some items.

The breakfast buffet is the same every day, so this can get a little boring by the end of a longer cruise. That said, I do like a vegan full English so I could have explored more of the cereal and pastry options.

Vegan breakfast
Vegan breakfast

On MSC Cruises you can get soya milk or rice milk for your coffee or cereal but there are no other kinds of plant milk like oat milk or almond milk, which would have been nice.

The free coffee in the buffet isn’t great, so if you have a drinks package I would request that you order a latte or Americano coffee with soya milk and they will make you one which tastes much better!

soy milk latte on MSC cruises

There are lots of different kinds of bread which can be toasted for you. If you ask you can also get vegan margarine instead of butter.

Buffet Lunch

The lunch options in the Marketplace Buffet change every day and on our cruise there were always lots of different vegan things to choose from.

I always like to look along the whole buffet to decide what I want before I start adding things to my tray to avoid ending up with a random selection that doesn’t go together.

Here are photos of the vegan lunches that I ate in the buffet on MSC Virtuosa…

There’s a pizza station and the pizza is absolutely delicious. There was always one without cheese, which is great because pizza this good doesn’t need cheese in my opinion.

Vegan pizza and pasta

If there’s no vegan pizza available, just ask the pizza chefs if they can make a pizza without cheese.

On a previous cruise, they were happy to oblige and even asked what toppings I would like.

MSC Cruises vegan pizza
Vegan pizza with no cheese

I didn’t eat dinner in the buffet, but I expect it would be similar to lunch.

Buffet Snacks

On MSC Cruises, the Marketplace Buffet is open for around 20 hours per day. Between meals, you can get snacks and freshly-baked pizza slices.

Aside from fruit, I didn’t really see any vegan-friendly snacks like cakes or cookies.

Vegan Options in the Speciality Restaurants

Each MSC Cruises ship has a number of different speciality restaurants in which you can dine for an additional charge. The exact restaurants vary depending on the ship, but on MSC Virtuosa there were four.

Speciality restaurants on MSC Virtuosa:

  • Indochine – French-Vietnamese
  • Hola! – Latin American and Mexican
  • Kaito – Japanese Teppanyaki and Sushi
  • Butcher’s Cut – American steakhouse

I didn’t eat in any of these restaurants. As I like to cruise on a budget, I thought that £50+ per head for a meal was very expensive when there is plenty of food that I could enjoy for free.

The MSC speciality restaurant menus didn’t have any vegan options. However, if you speak to the restaurant manager on board, they will be able to advise whether any of the dishes can be adapted to suit your plant-based diet.

Vegan Drinks

As our cruise ship departed from the UK, we had a kettle in our cabin to make tea and coffee. You won’t find this on every ship, but MSC Cruises recognises how much Brits enjoy a cup of tea!

If you’d like soya milk, you can request it from room service and they will give you some to keep in your fridge.

MSC tea and coffee facilities in cabin

None of the drinks menus had vegan labelling and the staff were (understandably) not trained in which drinks were suitable for vegans.

Suggested read: MSC Cruises Drinks Menus with Prices

I would advise checking which beers are vegan before you go, so that you know what to order.

With wines, it’s much more tricky. If you have WiFi, you can use a website such as Barnivore.com to look up wines on the wine list. Otherwise, you may wish to steer clear of wine during your cruise.

While some cruise lines allow you to bring your own wine on board, MSC Cruises does not.

wine fridge

My personal choice (no judgement, please) was to drink the wine regardless, knowing that I try my best most of the time and I’d rather have wine than no wine on a cruise.

Similarly, with fruit juice, there’s no way to know if the fruit was waxed with beeswax before being juiced. My choice was to drink it anyway rather than worry about the orange juice in my cocktails.

As nobody can be 100% vegan, I believe that all we can do is make our own decisions about what is acceptable to us as individuals given our circumstances. On the whole, I felt that MSC Cruises made it easy enough for me to make those decisions.

The Verdict

I was very happy with the vegan options on my MSC cruise and thoroughly enjoyed the food. I’m SO happy that MSC Cruises has added vegan menus and labelling in the buffet. These things make such a big difference to plant-based cruisers.

If you’re a vegan who has cruised with MSC, I’d love to hear about your experience or any tips in the comments below…

MSC Starship Club & Rob the Humanoid Robotic Bartender

The MSC Starship Club is a space-age bar that debuted on MSC Cruises’ ship, MSC Virtuosa, and later came to sister ship MSC Euribia. This futuristic bar and entertainment experience features a humanoid robot bartender by the name of Rob.

Rob, the humanoid robotic bartender at the MSC Starship club

I cruised on the maiden voyage of MSC Virtuosa and am excited to show you more about Rob the robot and the MSC Starship Club…

The World’s First Humanoid Robotic Bartender at Sea

A robot bartender? Hasn’t Royal Caribbean had those for years, you might ask…

Well, yes. Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class ships like Anthem of the Seas do feature robot bartenders. But the MSC Starship club knocks Royal Caribbean’s Bionic Bar clean out of the water. Here’s why…

For starters, MSC’s robot bartender, Rob, is a humanoid. Much more than just a mechanical arm, he has a face with human-like expressions and a voice. Rob speaks eight languages and has a clear personality that adjusts to match the atmosphere of the room!

  • Interactive – Robot bartender Rob Loves to tell people jokes, riddles and space trivia
  • Multilingual – He speaks English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese
  • Emotions – Rob has an LED face with human-like expressions to convey emotions
  • Personality – His personality adjusts to match his surroundings
  • Entertaining – If he’s in the mood, Rob will show off his dance moves
  • Flexible – Rob moves his arms, body and head just like a real person
  • Attentive – He can scan the room to recognise and greet guests walking by
  • Unlimited – Rob can make an infinite number of unique, personalised drinks

So while Royal Caribbean’s Bionic Bar, which has been around since 2014, is undoubtedly very cool, the technology behind MSC Cruises humanoid bartender Rob is lightyears ahead.

What To Expect Inside The Starship Club

Robotic bartender Rob is the star of the show inside the MSC Starship Club. But this integrated bar and entertainment experience offers more than just fancy cocktails.

The Starship Club is inspired by MSC Cruises’ vision of the spaceship of the future – the MSC Starliner One. It features some incredibly innovative technology that makes this fun venue a must-visit attraction for adults and kids of all ages.

Ships Featuring The MSC Starship Club

The MSC Starship Club debuted as the MSC Virtuosa robot bar and later came to sister ship MSC Euribia. Despite the popularity of the bar, it hasn’t been included on the new Seaside EVO-class ships, or the World-class ship MSC World Europa.

To Conclude

This bar and entertainment venue with its humanoid bartender is an incredibly exciting and futuristic venue for MSC Cruises and one that guests love. Make sure you check it out next time you’re cruising on MSC Virtuosa or MSC Euribia.

MSC-Easy-Plus-Package.jpg

MSC Easy Plus Package Price & Menu (2025)

If you’re booking a cruise with MSC, one of the options you need to think about is whether to get a drinks package, and if so, which one should you book?

One of your options is the Easy Plus package, which isn’t quite the top-tier option but will be sufficient for many, once you know what you get and how much it costs. MSC’s more clear on the former than the latter, so I’m here to clear everything up.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about the Easy Plus package, including restrictions.

MSC Cruises bar at sunset

What Is the Easy Plus Drinks Package on MSC?

The Easy Plus Drinks Package for MSC Cruises is a package that includes a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There are cheaper options available including one which still includes alcohol, but if you want a good range of drinks without paying top price, this may be the best option.

Of course, it might be that a drinks package isn’t right for you at all. If you don’t drink much then you might be better off if you pay for each drink individually. After all, the Easy Plus package has to be bought for the full duration of your cruise, not just the days you pick and choose.

So, you should weigh up whether it’s best to buy drinks individually before deciding on getting a package, and then decide which is right for you.

My drinks package calculator will help:

Drinks Included in the MSC Easy Plus Package

The Easy Plus Drinks Package with MSC includes all drinks priced up to $10, €9 or £10 – the currency will depend on where your ship is sailing. It covers a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Here’s the full list of what you get with the package:

  • A variety of draught and bottled beers
  • A selection of wines by the glass
  • A variety of frozen and classic cocktails
  • Non-alcoholic cocktails
  • Selected house and brand spirits
  • Liqueurs and cordials
  • Soft drinks – fountain sodas and fruit juices
  • Mineral water
  • Coffee drinks (latte, espresso, cappuccino, etc.)
  • Hot chocolate and hot teas

You also get a 10% discount on any bottles of wine that you buy while you’re onboard.

So that’s a pretty good list – you aren’t going to be short of choice when it comes to deciding what to drink during your cruise. Still, it’s not all-inclusive – there are lots of drinks that cost more than these limits.

Take a look at the MSC Cruises drinks menus here.

It’s important to note that the Easy Plus package does cover you in speciality restaurants, as well as the Main Dining Room, the buffet and the bars on the ship. The package below this one, the Easy package, doesn’t include drinks in speciality restaurants, so Easy Plus is the starting point if you plan on dining in various restaurants onboard.

It’s also good to know that, on MSC cruises in the Middle East, you won’t be able to get served an alcoholic drink while your ship’s in a Saudi port, even with the Easy Plus package. You’ll have to wait until the ship’s in international waters again.

A crew member in a white shirt hands over a beverage tomy husband seated on the sunny deck of the MSC Virtuosa cruise ship.

MSC Easy Plus Drinks Package Price

The cost of the Easy Plus Drinks Package varies depending on where you’re sailing, and how long for. You’ll also get it cheaper if you book in advance. You’ll pay between $61 and $74 per person, per night on US cruises and between £47 and £57.50 per night on cruises from the UK.

MSC are a little secretive about their drinks package prices – they don’t publish them online and only let you see them once you’re booking or have booked a cruise. The prices are fixed though, unlike some cruise lines that don’t publish them because they like to change them for different dates, or depending on demand.

Here’s a full breakdown of the Easy Plus drinks package prices:

Cruise Price Per Night (Bought Onboard) Price Per Night (Prebooked)
North America & Caribbean Up To 6 Nights $74 $64
North America & Caribbean  7+ Nights $70 $61
Europe & Middle East Up To 6 Nights €54 €47
Europe & Middle East 7+ Nights €62 €54
Cruise From UK Up To 6 Nights £57.50 £50
Cruise From UK 7+ Nights £54.05 £47

The discount for booking before you sail is 15%, so it’s definitely worth booking before you travel if you want a drinks package. Over the length of a cruise, it works out at quite the saving.

Plus, you’ll be glad to know that all of these prices (either prebooked or booked onboard) include the gratuity that would normally be charged for each drink you buy – so there’s no extra 18% on each drink for US cruises, or 15% for Europe and Middle East cruises. The package price is all you’ll pay.

A hand with teal nails holding a frosted glass of red slush drink with a striped straw, set against a calm ocean backdrop, suggesting a relaxed vacation vibe.

What Happens if You Order Outside of the MSC Easy Plus Drinks Package?

If you order a drink that costs more than $10, €9 or £10 on your MSC cruise and you have an Easy Plus drinks package, you’ll only pay the difference – you don’t have to pay the full price of the drink.

So if you order a cocktail that costs $14, you’ll only pay $4, since the $10 is covered in the drink’s package. You’ll also pay the gratuity on that drink but only on the extra you pay – so a $14 cocktail will actually cost you $4.72, since you’re paying 18% on the extra $4.

This is still a better deal than with some other cruise lines that would charge you the full price of the drink.

You can also upgrade while you’re onboard, if you decide you want the Premium Extra drinks package instead. Remember though that you’ll pay the full onboard price for the package.

What Is the Difference Between the Easy Package and Easy Plus Package on MSC?

The Easy Plus drinks package covers all drinks up to the values of $10, €9 or £10, depending on your sailing. With the Easy package, you only get selected drinks included, so your choice is more limited.

Here’s a comparison of what you get with each package:

Drink Easy Easy Plus
Beer Heineken only Selection of beers
Wine House wines Selection of wines
Cocktails Classic cocktails & mocktails More cocktails, including frozen options
Spirits House spirits House & branded spirits
Liqueurs No Yes
Soft drinks Fountain sodas Fountain & bottle
Water Yes Yes
Coffee Yes Yes
Hot chocolates and teas Yes Yes
10% discount on wine bottles No Yes

Also, remember that Easy Plus includes drinks in speciality restaurants whereas the Easy package does not.

You Can Use the MSC Easy Drinks Package On Private Islands

If your cruise calls at any of MSC’s private resorts – Ocean Cay or Sir Bani Yas – then you can use your Easy Plus drinks package in that resort. The drinks selection may be more limited than on the ship, but anything that would normally be included is still covered.

Ocean Cay - A beautiful island in the middle of the ocean with a huge MSC cruise ship docked beside it

You Have To Buy A Drink Package For Kids

It’s not possible for only some guests in an MSC cabin to have a drinks package, and this includes children. If the adults buy an Easy Plus drinks package, the children must have an appropriate drinks package for them too.

Depending on their ages and where you’re sailing, they may not be eligible for the Minors drinks package. In Europe, anyone 17 and under can get the Minors package, but on sailings from the US, that only applies to kids up to the age of 12. From 13 to 20, they can buy the Alcohol Free package, and then get one that includes alcohol when they turn 21.

I find this very frustrating as my six-year-old only ever drinks water. He’s just not interested in any other drinks, so buying a package for him is a complete waste of money as tap water is free. He won’t even have ice in it or a slice of lemon!

My son with a contemplative expression, sitting in a high-back dining chair in the main dining room on MSC Virtuosa

Is the MSC Easy Plus Drinks Package Worth It?

There’s no simple answer on whether the Easy Plus drinks package is worth it – it all depends on how much you drink on a typical day, and the kind of drinks you like to enjoy.

Also, you should check your cruise fare as you might get the Easy Plus (or even the Premium Extra) package included anyway – so you don’t need to pay any extra for it.

Weigh up how many drinks you’re likely to buy each day, and then decide whether it’ll be cheaper to get a drinks package or buy them individually. Then think about which drinks you’ll likely want, and that’ll help you decide whether the Easy Plus is the right one for you.

If you’re still not sure which package to get, then you can read my MSC Cruises Drinks Packages Guide which will explain the differences between each.

MSC Cruises Drink Packages Guide (2025)

The decision of whether or not to get the drinks package for your cruise is always a tricky one, but MSC Cruises makes this decision seem even more complicated than it has to be.

MSC Cruises has five drinks packages to choose from. And, they make it really hard to know how much they cost, and what you get for your money.

Cruise Mummy on MSC Euribia with a glass of wine

I’ve cruised with MSC Cruises four times. I usually buy the drink package and I’ve done lots of research to help you make the right decision.

MSC Drinks Package Prices 2025

MSC Cruises no longer publishes the prices of drink packages on the website. Instead, guests are asked to log in to see the prices for their cruise.

This makes things tricky for people who want to know how much the drinks package costs before they book a cruise. But don’t worry, I got you…

The package of your drinks package will vary depending on your destination, the length of your cruise, which package you choose and when you buy it. For alcoholic drinks, you can expect to pay $61 to $101 per person, per night.

Discounted Drinks Packages

There may be other special offers on drinks packages available at the time of booking. For example, when I booked a cruise on MSC Euribia recently, I was able to add on the Premium Extra drink package for just £40 per person, per day.

Here are the prices for my two-night cruise without drinks and with drinks…

MSC cruise price with and without drinks

Whichever package you choose, you should always buy it before your cruise. If you wait until you’re onboard, you’ll pay 15% more.

Are MSC Drink Packages Worth the Expense?

Whether or not the MSC drink packages are worth it depends on how much you drink. To work out how many drinks it costs to ‘break even’ on your package, you need to know how much each drink costs.

And to work out which package is best for, you, you’ll need to know what’s included in each. And what happens if you order a drink that’s not included in your package.

Use The Drink Package Calculator

To make things really simple, you can use my drink package calculator. Just enter the drinks you plan to have, and it will tell you which is the best package for you, and how much that will save you.

Now, read on and I’ll explain what’s included in each package, how much the drinks cost without a package and the other vital things you should know…

What’s Included In MSC Drink Packages?

To help you decide which drinks package is the best, here are the menus of what’s included in each package on MSC Cruises…

With the Easy Plus package, drinks can be consumed in all bars (except the Starship Club on MSC Virtuosa), the buffet, the main dining room and ALSO in speciality restaurants. This is an important difference from the Easy package, which doesn’t allow you to order drinks in speciality restaurants.

It can also be used on MSC Cruises private islands, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and Sir Bani Yas, and in the Raj Polo Tea Room on board MSC World Europa (but not in The Coffee Emporium)

If you plan to dine in a few speciality restaurants during our cruise, this deal is probably a better choice than the Easy drinks package.

Drinks Not Included in MSC Cruises Drink Packages

MSC drinks packages do not include drinks in souvenir glasses, drinks from your mini bar or drinks ordered via room service.

The drink packages also do not include drinks from ‘signature venues’. These include the MSC Virtuosa Starship Club, Venchi1878 establishments and Jean-Philippe Maury Venues.

Drinks in the MSC World Europa Raj Polo Tea Room are only included in the Premium Extra and Easy Plus Packages. Drinks in the MSC World Europa Coffee Emporium are only included in the Premium Extra Package.

Charges for Additional Beverages Not Included in the Package

If you want to enjoy a drink that’s not included in your package, you can order it and will only pay the difference between the package limit and the price of the drink.

This is great, as some other cruise lines will charge you the full price for the drink.

MSC Bar Prices

MSC drinks packages can be a great deal, but of course, you’ll need to drink enough to ‘break even’ and get your money’s worth.

So let’s take a look at the drinks prices…

Here are some examples of the MSC bar prices:

MSC Drinks Prices:

  • Cocktails: $7 to $16
  • Mocktails: $6
  • Spirits: $7 to $12
  • Large draft beer: $6
  • Bottled beer: $6.50
  • Glass of wine: $6 to $14
  • Fruit juice: $2.95 to $7.50
  • Water: $2.75 to $5.50
  • Energy drink: $4.95
  • Canned soda: $3.25
  • Glass of soda: $2.25
  • Coffee: $2.50 to $4.25

I took photos of every drink menu on the ship, so if you’d like to see the prices of any specific drinks, you can see photos of MSC drink menus here.

What drinks are free on MSC Cruises?

The following drinks are free on MSC Cruises:

  • Water
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Ice tea
  • Milk
  • Juices (at breakfast only)

Not all drinks are available for free in all bars. For the best selection of free drinks, head to the Main Dining Room or the casual (buffet) restaurant.

Wine Prices

A glass of wine on MSC Cruises costs $6 for a standard house wine, up to $14 for something nicer. Bear in mind that the servings can sometimes be small. This is what a glass of wine looks like (if you’re unlucky – sometimes they’re much bigger!)

If the ship is busy, the service can be pretty slow. So bear in mind that you may be either queueing at the bar or trying to catch the attention of a waiter quite often. If you don’t have a drink package, it makes sense to order wine by the bottle to avoid this issue.

Beer Prices

On MSC Cruises you won’t get a pint of beer. Instead, large beers are served in pilsner glasses which appear to be around three-quarters of a pint in size. And unless you’re in the British pub, you can only get Heineken. This costs $6 for a large glass or $3.50 for a small.

There is a wider selection of bottles lagers, craft beers, ales, pilsner, stout, cider and alcohol-free beer. These all cost $6.50 or $7.

Personally, I think that $6.50 for a small can of alcohol-free Heineken is a rip-off. It seems crazy that a large draft standard Heineken is cheaper!

Is water free on MSC Cruises?

Tap water is available free of charge on MSC Cruises and the water in your cabin is safe to drink. Bottled water costs $2.75 for a 17oz (500ml) bottle. Bottled water is free if you have a drinks package.

Are tea and coffee free on MSC Cruises?

On MSC Cruises, tea and coffee is available free of charge but only at the buffet area. You can get all kinds of teas and coffees such as cappuccino and espresso for free throughout the ship with a drinks package.

MSC Speciality coffees

You’re entitled to speciality coffees like cappuccino with the drinks package, but sometimes if the staff were busy they would tell me that they could only make brewed coffee.

This is one of the many things that annoys me about MSC Cruises. You can read more on that in this article: Why Are MSC Cruises So Cheap?

If your cruise includes UK ports such as Southampton, you’ll find a kettle in your room with tea and coffee. Otherwise, you won’t.

Cabin stewards don’t always refill the tea and coffee, unless you ask them to. Which can be mildly annoying.

MSC Cruises coffee in room

Are MSC Drink Packages Worth It?

Before you go ahead and buy a drinks package, it’s worth doing a little bit of maths to figure out how many drinks you’d need to have per day to ‘break even’ on your package.

Whichever MSC drink package you choose, you’ll need to drink around five drinks per day to break even. Of course, the exact number depends on what you like to drink and which package you choose.

When thinking about whether a package is good value or not, think about how much time you plan to spend on the ship. Whilst you might easily get through five or six drinks on a sea day, you might not have so many if you’re off the ship all day and only having a couple in the evening.

MSC Cruises Drinks Package Calculator

To help you work out whether the drinks package is worth it or not, I’ve built a handy calculator tool.

The calculator will show how much your bar bill will be if you don’t have a drinks package. You can then compare this to the price of the drinks package to decide whether it’s worth it or not.

Just pop your details in the form and you’ll receive an email with a link to the calculator…

Things To Know About MSC Drink Packages

Here are the answers to your most commonly-asked questions about drinks on MSC Cruises. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, please add it to the comments below and I will answer it for you.

1. Everyone must have the same drink package

On MSC Cruises, all passengers travelling together (sharing a cabin or a table) must have the same drink package, with the exception of children who must have the minor’s drinks package.

This rule applies to everyone aged three or over. You don’t need to purchase a package for children under three.

You can’t share a drinks package. If you give drinks to anyone who doesn’t have a package, you face having your package cancelled without a refund.

MSC cocktails

2. You can’t bring your own drinks

While most cruise lines let you bring a bottle of wine in your lugagge, MSC Cruises does not allow guests to bring any drinks on board. This includes alcohol, soft drinks and water. You may bring water if you have a medical need for it and you can bring unlimited baby milk.

Sneaking alcohol onto a cruise ship is not recommended and it can get you kicked off the cruise.

I accidentally brought on a 500ml bottle of Dr Pepper when I forgot it was in my bag. Nobody noticed, which shows that they don’t always check.

3. You don’t get free drinks with Fantastica or Aurea experiences any more

MSC Cruises offer three ‘experiences’ – Bella, Fantastica and Aurea. None of the experiences (Bella, Fantastica or Aurea) include drinks as standard.

MSC Aurea used to come with a free Easy drinks package, but this has been replaced with welcome prosecco and chocolates in your room since 2022.

There may be special MSC Cruises Promotions whereby you can get a free drinks package when you upgrade to a Fantastica experience.

Suggested read: MSC Bella Vs Fantastica Vs Aurea

4. You do get free drinks with the Yacht Club experience

MSC Yacht Club guests get a Premium Extra drink package as part of their exclusive benefits.

5. You’ll pay more if you buy the package on the ship

You can order your MSC drinks package before you cruise or on board your ship. It’s 15% cheaper to buy your drink package before your cruise. You can do this via the ‘Manage My Booking’ section of the MSC Cruises website.

6. The drinking age varies for different cruises

The drinking age on MSC Cruise ships depends on the itinerary, not the nationality of the passenger. It is generally 18 years old on European cruises and 21 years old on Caribbean cruises.

7. There’s no limit on how many drinks you can have

Unlike some other cruise lines that limit you to 15 drinks per day, MSC Cruises don’t have a set maximum number of drinks per day. However, if you appear to be intoxicated you are unlikely to be served more alcohol.

MSC Cruises champagne bucket

8. Drink packages aren’t available on every cruise

Drink packages are available on most MSC Cruises ships. But they’re not available on cruises from South Africa and China. Due to Saudi law, no alcohol will be served during calls in Saudi Arabian ports.

9. MSC drink packages work on private islands

Your MSC drink package can be used to get free drinks on MSC Cruises’ private island, Ocean Cay as well as the private resort of Sir Bani Yas in the UAE. However, there will not be as many different drinks available on the island as there are on the ship.

MSC Cruises Free Drinks Package Offer

One very popular offer is the MSC ‘ALL-IN drinks and Wi-Fi offer’ which is sometimes available on the MSC Cruises USA website. This offer includes free drinks, free Wi-Fi and free onboard credit.

Before you go ahead and book an all-inclusive deal with free drinks and wifi, I’d suggest working out how much it would cost to buy each part of the package separately to make sure that it’s actually good value. Consider whether you actually want the drinks and the wifi, or whether they just seem good because they’re packaged up in a deal.

Jamaican Paradise cocktail

If your all-inclusive MSC Cruise bundle comes with the Easy or Easy Plus package and you want to upgrade, you can do that either before your cruise or on board. As always, it’s cheaper to do it before you cruise.

  • Easy to Easy Plus costs $15 per day onboard
  • Easy to Premium Extra costs $44 per day onboard
  • Easy Plus to Premium Extra costs $28 per day onboard

You’ll save 15% on these prices if you purchase the upgrade online or via your travel agent before your cruise.

Until 2019, MSC Cruises used to regularly offer cruisers 12 free drinks vouchers when they booked a Fantastica cabin. These paper coupons could be exchanged for a glass of wine, pint or bottle of beer, spirit and mixer, non-premium cocktail, soft drink, mineral water or hot drink. The coupons no longer exist.

MSC Allegrissimo Drinks Package

The MSC Allegrissimo drinks package is the name of a package that has been discontinued. The Allegrissimo offer was most similar to the Easy drinks package. The main difference is that the Allegrissimo drinks package also included ice cream.

MSC Mealtime Drinks Package

Another discontinued deal is the one where you could get free wine and beer with meals. The mealtime drinks package no longer exists, and now you can always get drinks at any time of day.

MSC Classic Drink Package

If you’re used to cruising with Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruises, you’ll be familiar with the term ‘classic drinks package’. MSC Cruises don’t call their main package the ‘classic package’. Instead, you can choose from Easy, Easy Plus or Premium Extra drinks packages.

MSC Easy Package Drink Menu & Cost (2025)

If you’re looking to book an MSC cruise then you’ll want to think about your drinks package options – should you pay for your drinks individually, or book a package – and if so, which one?

The Easy Drinks Package is one option, but MSC isn’t always super-clear on what you get with it and what’s excluded, and especially on how much it’ll cost you.

Two vibrant tropical cocktails on a glass table, with a green drink garnished with a slice of lime and a red-orange cocktail adorned with an orange slice, both served on coasters.

So read on to have all your Easy Package questions answered.

What Is the Easy Drinks Package on MSC?

The Easy Drinks Package is the cheapest drinks package on an MSC cruise that includes alcohol. With this package, you can order any drink priced up to $7 or €7 and it will be free.

There is an Alcohol-Free package which is cheaper, but if you want to enjoy beer, wine, spirits and cocktails without buying drinks individually, this is the cheapest option.

A drinks package isn’t for everyone – it depends on how much you tend to drink each day. You can only buy it for the full duration of your cruise, not for occasional days, so you have to work out whether you’ll drink enough each day to justify the cost.

I have a drinks package calculator that can help:

What is Included in the MSC Easy Drinks Package?

The MSC Easy Drinks Package includes “Selected Drinks” – a range of popular cocktails and mocktails, house wines and spirits, Heineken beer on draught, and a selection of soft and hot drinks.

Here’s the full list of what you can get:

MSC Cruises easy package drinks list

MSC does state that the drinks available will depend on where you’re sailing, and that the brands involved may change over time. So assume it will be Heineken for now, but don’t bank on it.

A really important thing to note is that the Easy Drinks Package can’t be used in speciality restaurants on an MSC ship – it can only be used in the buffet restaurant, the Main Dining Room, and the bars onboard.

In bars that have the generic menu, there’s a section for the ‘Easy Package drinks’ so it’s really easy to see what you can have.

MSC Cruises drinks menu

But, not all bars have this menu. In some bars, you’ll just have to remember not to go over the $7 limit if you want your drink to be free of charge.

If you plan on dining in speciality restaurants, you might want to consider upgrading to the Easy Plus or Premium Extra packages, since they are included.

Plus, it’s worth noting that if you’re cruising through the Middle East with MSC, you won’t be able to get an alcoholic drink while the ship is in a Saudi port – only once it returns to international waters. This applies even if you have a drinks package.

A smiling MSC waiter in a vest and tie taking an order from guests at a well-appointed dining table, with a focus on customer interaction in the main dining room of an MSC Cruises ship.

How Much Is the MSC Easy Drinks Package?

The cost of the MSC Easy Drinks Package varies depending on which ship you’re sailing on, where you’re travelling to, how long you’re sailing for and whether you book in advance. Expect to pay between £34 and £42.55 per night on cruises from the UK, and between $46 and $56 per night on US cruises.

Cruise lines tend to fall into two camps with drinks packages – those that have a simple, clear pricing structure and those that like to be a bit more secretive, likely so they can charge more on sailings where it’s in demand. MSC is somewhere in the middle – they don’t advertise the prices, but once you’re logged into your cruise booking the price will be fixed.

Here’s a breakdown of the Easy package prices:

Cruise Price Per Night (Buy Onboard) Price Per Night (Pre-Book)
North America & Caribbean Up To 6 Nights $56 $49
North America & Caribbean  7+ Nights $53 $46
Europe & Middle East Up To 6 Nights €49 €43
Europe & Middle East 7+ Nights €45 €39
Cruise From UK Up To 6 Nights £42.55 £37
Cruise From UK 7+ Nights £39.10 £34

You save 15% when you book your Easy drinks package before you sail, so if you’re considering it then I’d definitely recommend booking in advance.

It’s also worth noting that these prices include the drinks gratuities that you’d otherwise have to pay – so you don’t need to pay the extra 18% for each drink on US/Caribbean cruises, or the 15% on cruises in Europe and the Middle East. You’re covered within the package.

A hand with teal nails holding a frosted glass of red slush drink with a striped straw, set against a calm ocean backdrop, suggesting a relaxed vacation vibe.

What Happens if You Order Outside the MSC Easy Drinks Package?

If you choose an MSC Easy Drinks Package and then decide to order a drink that isn’t included, you’ll only pay the difference between the drink and the value covered in the package.

So for cocktails, you get $7 cocktails included. If you order a $10 cocktail you’ll only pay $3 for it.

Some cruise lines would charge you full price for any drinks that aren’t covered by your package, so this is a pretty good deal. However, if you decide you’re more interested in drinks that aren’t covered, you are allowed to upgrade your package either before you sail or while you’re on the ship.

If you upgrade on the ship, you’ll pay the onboard price in full for the rest of the days on the cruise. You might also be turned down if you wait until the latter part of your cruise.

A refreshing mojito with fresh mint and a classic stout beer with a creamy head, both served on branded coasters in a traditional pub setting.

What Are the Alternatives to the MSC Easy Drinks Package?

There are several other options for a drinks package if you’re cruising with MSC Cruises. In total, there are five MSC drinks packages, although one of those is for minors only.

With the adult drinks package, you can also choose from:

  • Premium Extra Drinks Package – all drinks up to $16 / €14 / £14
  • Easy Plus Drinks Package – all drinks up to $10 / €9 / £10
  • Alcohol-Free Package – mocktails, soft and hot drinks

If you’re someone who doesn’t really drink much, beyond the occasional cocktail or beer, then consider getting the Alcohol-Free Package and paying individually for the alcoholic ones.

A cup of cappuccino with latte art on top, presented on a saucer, with the ocean glistening in the background, capturing a serene coffee moment by the sea.

Whereas if you like to dine in speciality restaurants, or you prefer a wider range of drinks, then upgrading to the Easy Plus or Premium Extra package may be worthwhile.

You should also check as, depending on the cruise fare you’ve bought, you might already have a drinks package included. Also if you’ve booked the Yacht Club Experience then you already get the Premium Extra package included, so there’s no need to buy the Easy one.

You Can Use the MSC Easy Drinks Package On Ocean Cay

The Easy Drinks Package does apply ashore in the private MSC resorts – Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, and Sir Bani Yas in the Emirates. While the island bars likely won’t have the full range of drinks that the ships do, you can still enjoy any that would normally be included in the package.

MSC Ocean Cay

You MUST Get A Drink Package For Kids

Everyone in your MSC cabin must have a drinks package, including minors aged 3 and over. So if you’re buying the Easy Drinks Package, you’ll have to pay for the Minors Package for your children if they’re aged 17 or under on European itineraries.

I find this very frustrating as my six-year-old only ever drinks water. He’s just not interested in any other drinks, so buying a package for him is a complete waste of money as tap water is free. He won’t even have ice in it or a slice of lemon!

My son with a contemplative expression, sitting in a high-back dining chair on MSC Virtuosa.

You may want to note that for US and Caribbean itineraries, the age limits are slightly different – the Minors package is only available for guests aged 3 to 12 years old.

Anyone aged 13 to 20 years old can buy the Alcohol-Free Package, since the packages including alcohol are only available to anyone 21+ on those sailings.

Is the MSC Easy Drinks Package Worth It?

Whether or not the MSC Easy Drinks Package is worth it depends entirely on you, and the kind of drinks you enjoy. If you only drink one or two alcoholic drinks per day, then it probably isn’t – you may as well buy drinks individually, either with the Alcohol-Free Package or without it.

My daughter enjoying a fruity drink with a striped straw, dressed in a striped top and pink hoodie, seated in a casual dining setting on MSC Virtuosa with patrons in the background.

If you do like to enjoy beers, wines, spirits and cocktails but you aren’t too fussed about which ones, the package may offer great value – especially since you can still enjoy the occasional drink outside the package and only pay the difference.

But, if you plan on dining in the speciality restaurants, or you like a better quality of spirit or wine, then it might be better value to pay for one of the more premium options instead.

26 Secrets You Must Know Before Cruising to Ocean Cay

Ever fancied spending time on a private tropical island? It’s a dream that’s normally out of reach, but book a cruise to Ocean Cay and you’ll get pretty close to the experience. Technically it is a private island, even though you’ll be sharing the experience with a couple of thousand others at the same time.

Still, it’s a fantastic destination that’s really popular with cruise passengers, despite only being open for a couple of years. Let’s look at some of the key facts and secrets about Ocean Cay, so that you make the most of your time at the island.

Ocean Cay MSC Cruises Marine reserve

1. Ocean Cay is Exclusive to MSC Cruises

The only cruise line that visits Ocean Cay is MSC Cruises, as they own the island. There are seven different MSC Cruises ships that include Ocean Cay as a port of call. These are MSC Divina, MSC Magnifica, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Poesia, MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore and MSC Seaside.

MSC Cruises bought the island and renovated it specifically to be their own private cruise destination. No other cruise lines can visit, nor can any other holidaymakers. It’s only by booking one of the cruise breaks sailing from either Port Canaveral or Miami that you can visit the island.

2. You Can’t Stay On Ocean Cay, But You Can Visit

Despite some cruise itineraries including a two-day visit to Ocean Cay, you aren’t allowed to stay on the island overnight. You must return to the ship for the evening. There are no hotels on the island, so you are not legally able to stay ashore at night.

Some people might be tempted by the idea of hiding away to enjoy a slice of private island life, even just for a night. You’ll get in a lot of trouble if you do. Just enjoy the late-night show then get back to the comfort of your cabin.

3. It Cost Around $200 Million to Renovate the Island

When MSC Cruises bought the island of Ocean Cay, they spent $200 million to make it fit for purpose as a cruise destination. This included building the cruise pier and adding facilities for guests to eat, drink and relax on the island.

The work on restoring the island began in 2016, and was held up by Hurrican Dorian just as it was getting close to completion in September of 2019. It was able to open in December 2019 despite the setback.

In August 2023, the next phase of development was announced, with another $100 million investment. The island was closed for six weeks between April and May 2024 as a result, and work is continuing. It is expected to be completed by the end of the winter 2024-25 season.

4. There Are No Swimming Pools on Ocean Cay

There are no swimming pools on Ocean Cay, although if you want to swim then there are secluded lagoons that are safe. They don’t have a strong current and they have gentle slopes, including shallow waters that are suitable for young children.

Ocean Cay Lagoon
Ocean Cay Lagoon

The waters around Ocean Cay are really clear and clean, which makes them really pleasant for swimming. You’ll see some marvellous wildlife too. There’s no need for a pool when the lagoons are this pristine.

5. You Don’t Need Your Passport To Visit the Island

You won’t need to take your passport with you when you disembark at Ocean Cay. The island is privately owned, so isn’t classified as a foreign territory despite it being in the Bahamas. You will need to take your cruise card to sign out of the ship and to sign back in.

This is handy since there’s no risk of losing your important ID documents, but you will need to keep the keycard safe.

Some cruise lines offer itineraries that only sail to their own private islands. For those, you don’t need your passport at all for the entire cruise. A birth certificate will suffice.

That’s not the case with MSC Cruises. Their itineraries will always visit at least one other destination, so you will need your passport to board the ship.

6. Ocean Cay is a Man-Made Island

Ocean Cay is an artificial island that was built in the late 1960s by dredging, with the purpose of mining Aragonite sand. It’s now considered a Marine Reserve with conservation status. As part of the renovation, MSC Cruises has preserved the ecosystem.

Ocean Cay is man-made

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is located in the district of Bimini in the Bahamas, around 20 miles south of the Bimini islands. Ocean Cay is actually much closer to Miami than it is to Grand Bahamas, Nassau and the other Bahamas islands.

The cruise line has plans to build a Conservation Center. This will serve as a research base for scientists studying local coral and other wildlife, and will welcome guests to learn about the island and the surrounding waters (Source).

7. Ocean Cay Has Decent Wi-Fi

There is Wi-Fi access available across parts of Ocean Cay, although if you wander to more remote areas, you will struggle to get service. Access to the Wi-Fi on the island is included if you’ve bought an internet package on the ship.

A lot of people prefer to use a private island as a technology detox. But if you can’t resist posting your photographs online as soon as you’ve snapped them, then you’ll be able to.

8. Drinks Packages Carry Over Onto The Island

If you’ve bought a drinks package on your MSC cruise, it will carry over to any visit to Ocean Cay. This means you can enjoy the same drinks that you would on board at the venues on the island.

Some cruise lines treat their private island as a separate entity, meaning you have to pay for your drinks even if you’ve got a drinks package. So it’s good that MSC allows you to enjoy the same drinks at Ocean Cay as you would if you’d stayed on your ship (Source).

9. You Can Rent a Cabana For The Day

For a little extra privacy, you can rent a private cabana on Ocean Cay from $249 for the full day, although some cabanas cost more. Each cabana includes beach chairs and a shaded area where you can escape the sun, and they can accommodate six guests.

You’ll also be given fresh water to help you cool down. Towels are provided, so you don’t need to take your own ashore if you plan on swimming or snorkelling. More expensive Ocean Cay beach cabana packages include lunch and snorkelling equipment too.

10. Food Is Included During Your Visit to Ocean Cay

Most food on Ocean Cay is included in your cruise fare, including the buffet and food trucks. There are some excursions which may include food, such as picnics. These incur the extra charge that you pay for the excursion.

The buffet at the food court includes traditional Bahamian dishes alongside classic favourites, and there’s also an ice cream parlour for guests to enjoy. Plus, some of the dining venues on the ship remain open while docked at Ocean Cay, so you can eat on board if you prefer.

11. There Are Eight Different Beaches You Can Enjoy

There are eight different beaches open to guests on Ocean Cay. North and South beaches have calm waters and are suitable for families, as is the Seakers Family Cove and the Family Lagoon Beach. Watersports are available at South Beach, while Ocean House Beach is only available to MSC Yacht Club Guests.

One of the beaches on Ocean Cay

Not every beach is monitored by a lifeguard, so you’ll need to be careful if you choose to swim at one of the unprotected ones. However, finding a quiet spot to relax should be easier with so many beaches to choose from.

12. You Can Rent Various Watersport Equipment

There are a lot of watersports you can enjoy on Ocean Cay, including snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding. These activities come with an additional cost, either to rent the equipment or as part of a guided excursion.

Kayaking and paddleboarding
Kayaking and paddleboarding

One of the more interesting excursions is a glow-in-the-dark experience available in the evening. You’ll be given a paddleboard with LED lights on the underside. These cast a gentle glow into the waters, attracting some interesting wildlife. Definitely one to try if you have the chance (Source).

13. Ocean Cay Isn’t Very Big

Ocean Cay isn’t a large island. It covers 95 acres and has around 1.5 miles of beachfront. You can walk from one end to the other in around 20 minutes. The size of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is very similar to that of Royal Caribbean’s private island, Coco Cay.

Ocean Cay size
Ocean Cay is two to three times as long as a cruise ship

14. There Are Bikes and Golf Carts For Hire

If you want to travel faster around Ocean Cay, you can hire a bicycle. You don’t have to be excluded if you have mobility issues or find walking long distances difficult. So consider hiring a golf cart if you want to experience all that Ocean Cay has to offer without pushing your walking limits too far.

15. The Ship Can Dock Directly At The Island

Most private islands require cruise guests to take a water shuttle boat to shore, but Ocean Cay has its own cruise pier where the ship can dock directly. As soon as you walk off the ship, you are on the island.

Cruise pier
Cruise pier

The pier was built as part of the $200 million renovation. It makes it much more convenient to travel back and forth to the ship if you want a break from the island, or have forgotten something essential in your cabin.

16. The Casino Remains Open on the Ship During a Visit

When a cruise ship docks in port, it normally has to close the casino due to national gambling regulations. However, because Ocean Cay is privately owned, it is considered to be international waters and so the casino can remain open.

So don’t worry if you’ve been itching to enjoy a few casino games, as you can wander back and forth between the island and the casino as you like. Plus it’s likely to be a quieter time since most people will be ashore, which is good if you don’t like crowds.

17. You Can Book a Special Picnic

One of the evening excursions available on Ocean Cay is the Sunset Evening Beach Picnic. This isn’t so much an excursion as the chance to enjoy your own picnic under the stars. It includes a basket with a blanket, a bottle of sparkling wine, and various foods and desserts.

It’s a lovely way to end your day on the private island. If you can find a quiet spot (which shouldn’t be difficult), then it can be a really romantic, memorable moment.

18. There’s a Lighthouse You Can Climb

Ocean Cay has its own lighthouse, and you can pay to climb it. There are three levels with a total of 165 steps if you want to go all the way to the top, where there is a 360-degree viewing platform. The tour is guided, and you’ll learn about the island as you climb.

It’s one of the more popular excursions on the island, so book early if you can. You’ll get amazing views across the whole of Ocean Cay. The whole thing only takes 30 minutes, so you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day (Source).

19. The Lighthouse Plays a Part in Special Evening Shows

With ships staying late at Ocean Cay, there are often evening shows including the popular Evening Lighthouse Show, where the lighthouse is lit up in an impressive demonstration. Live DJs will provide an atmosphere, and fire pits add to the tropical escape feel.

There are other evening events you can enjoy too, including a Luna Libre Party or a romantic Sunset Champagne cruise. The fun isn’t just limited to the daytime on Ocean Cay.

20. Parts Of The Island Have a Dark Sky

Although parts of Ocean Cay will be lit up for the evening shows and as part of the lively atmosphere, there are plenty of secluded spots with a dark sky if you want to go stargazing. You’ll get an amazing view of the night sky from a peaceful beach location, away from the crowds.

Ocean Cay after dark

There are also dedicated stargazing excursions if you’d prefer to be shown everything by an expert. You’ll be able to use state-of-the-art telescopes as part of the excursions, some of which are tailored specifically to children who have a passion for space.

21. You Can Get Married On The Island

Guests can choose an all-inclusive wedding package if they want to get married on Ocean Cay. Staff will arrange all the paperwork, so you just need to book it and turn up. There’s a special Wedding Cabana overlooking the ocean where ceremonies take place.

If you’re already married and feel like you’re missing out, then don’t worry – you can also renew your vows at the cabana in a private ceremony (Source).

22. Spa Treatments Are Available On The Island

At The Spa Ocean Cay, you can enjoy massages and gentle yoga classes while surrounded by the pristine marine reserve scenery. All skincare products used at the spa are eco-certified, so you can relax and enjoy a soothing treatment that befits the conservation theme.

You can even combine yoga and paddleboarding for a unique experience. Don’t worry, it isn’t as difficult as it sounds! (Source)

23. The Snorkelling Is Excellent

Many cruisers say that snorkelling is one of the best activities to enjoy at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. The water is crystal clear, and you can see lots of colourful fish as well as turtles and other marine animals.

Ocean Cay snorkelling
Snorkelling at Ocean Cay

You can snorkel right off the beach with your own equipment or hired snorkels and masks. For the very best experience, book a guided Ocean Cay snorkelling safari excursion.

24. You Don’t Have To Spend a Penny If You Don’t Want To

A visit to Ocean Cay includes food and some non-alcoholic drinks. There’s live music and entertainment for free, and sun loungers and beach chairs are all free of charge. You can bring your own snorkel, or just enjoy swimming in the ocean or the lagoons.

You really don’t need to pay for anything. But if you want to rent a floating water mat, inflatable ring, kayak, bicycle, pedalo, paddleboard, snorkel or even a cabana, then you can do so by charging it to your cruise card.

Otherwise, the Ocean Cay excursions prices can vary, and you’re best checking for your specific sailing.

Ocean Cay Rental Price List:

  • Cabanas – $249
  • Deluxe Cabanas – $349
  • Inflatable family raft – $25
  • Floating beach mat – $15
  • Paddleboard – £29
  • Kayak – £29
  • Umbrella – $12

25. Ocean Cay Has a Schedule of Organised Fun

Think you’ll get bored with sunbathing all day? Don’t like to swim? Fear not. Ocean Cay offers lots of organised activities that will keep the whole family entertained.

You can sign up for all kinds of fun things such as scavenger hunts, sandcastle building competitions and even the Ocean Cay Olympic Games.

26. There Are Excursions From Ocean Cay

To really make the most of your time at Ocean Cay, you can book an excursion. Popular options include:

  • Ocean Cay WaveRunner tour
  • Night-time stand-up paddleboarding
  • A boat ride to a shipwreck for snorkelling
  • Guided kayak tour
  • Catamaran ride with rum
  • Sunset Champagne boat cruise
  • Beachside stargazing
  • Deep-sea fishing
  • Scuba diving
  • Sunset picnic
  • Stingray adventure
  • Family catamaran tour

The Newest MSC Cruise Ships (In Order)

MSC Cruises has been making waves (pun intended) in the world of cruising with some ambitious plans.

new MSC ship

The cruise line has outright stated that it wants to become the biggest in the world, which would be some feat if it did manage to overtake established leaders Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

Yet the aggressive expansion strategy is well underway. In addition to five ships launched within just three years since cruising returned after the shutdown, there are another three ships planned – plus a whole new sub-cruise line!

Let’s take a look.

The newest MSC cruise ships sailing now

1. MSC Euribia – 2023

MSC Euribia

MSC Cruises newest ship is the final ship in the Meraviglia Plus Class, joining the MSC Grandiosa and the MSC Virtuosa.

MSC Euribia isn’t be the largest ship in the fleet – the World-class ships are bigger – but she is still mightily impressive, with a maximum guest capacity of over 6,300.

I’ve cruises on MSC Euribia and had a fantastic time! You can read my MSC Euribia review here.

Cruise Mummy, takes a selfie with a large cruise ship featuring a distinctive blue and white design in the background, docked at a port with visible security fencing and industrial equipment.

Along with many of the other newer MSC ships, she is significantly more friendly to the environment than older cruise ships. She’s powered by LNG, which is a cleaner fuel, and she has advanced water treatment and energy efficiency systems to minimise waste and ensure only the fuel needed is burned.

A ship this big is obviously packed with things to see and do, including five pools and a waterpark. She will also be home to the Galleria Euribia, the largest LED dome at sea in the indoor promenade.

MSC Euribia sails a variety of itineraries around Northern Europe and the Med from Southampton, making her one of the biggest ships to call the port home.

2. MSC World Europa – 2022

MSC World Europa

The MSC World Europa debuted in 2022 and quickly established herself as one of the most impressive ships currently sailing.

At the time of her launch, she was the first ship outside of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class to have a volume above 200,000 gross tonnes, slotting her into the number six position for biggest ships in the world. This of course means she is the biggest ship in the MSC fleet.

It’s not just about size with MSC World Europa though – the ship has a stunning modern design with futuristic attractions including the Luna Park Arena which hosts game shows, various kids’ activities and movie screenings.

Luna Park

She was the first ship in the MSC fleet to be powered by LNG, and she hosts the current longest dry slide at sea which travels for 11 decks on the ship.

The MSC World Europa sails the Mediterranean during the summer months, and the Middle East in the winter, with Grand Voyages (cruises between regions) also available.

3. MSC Seascape – 2022

MSC Seascape

The MSC Seascape launched in 2022 as the second of the Seaside EVO ships for MSC. The Seaside EVO Class is an expansion of the original Seaside Class, quite literally – they are around 10% bigger than the two Seaside-class ships.

MSC Seascape pays tribute to New York City in her design, with the retail area of the ship named Times Square featuring a projection of the Manhattan skyline, and an impressive three-metre-high replica of the Statue of Liberty as the centrepiece of the casino.

MSC Seascape Statue of Liberty

She is full of interesting attractions and features, along with beautiful artworks – the primary one being the Incando del Mare glass sculpture which rises from Deck 5 through to Deck 8. She has a real focus on outdoor spaces, including a fantastic Infinity Pool where guests can relax with stunning views.

MSC Seascape is based in the Caribbean year-round, sailing out of Miami. Itineraries typically call at Ocean Cay, the private marine reserve destination for MSC Cruises.

4. MSC Seashore – 2021

MSC Seashore

The first of the Seaside EVO ships, MSC Seashore debuted in 2021 and so remains one of the newest and best ships in the whole fleet.

She is an almost identical twin of her newer sister ship MSC Seascape, even down to the New York City theming, although her glass sculpture is unique and is named Danza del Mare.

Danza del Mare on MSC Seashore

Like her sister ship, she is packed with fantastic attractions including quality theatre shows, an expansive casino area, and extensive family-friendly areas, with some of the best kids’ clubs at sea.

She is also packed with environmentally-friendly tech to reduce emissions, recycle waste and ensure she is as efficient as possible, and therefore needs less fuel to move.

Unlike MSC Seascape, the MSC Seashore doesn’t have a permanent home. Instead, she offers cruises in the Caribbean and around South America during the winter months (again, with port visits to Ocean Cay) but during the summer she relocates to the Mediterranean.

5. MSC Virtuosa – 2021

MSC Virtuosa

The MSC Virtuosa launched in May of 2021 and became the second ship in the Meraviglia Plus Class. Similar to the Seaside and Seaside EVO classes, the Meraviglia Plus Class is an expansion of the original Meraviglia ships.

The MSC Virtuosa was, when she launched, the largest ship in the fleet, being around 6% larger than the Seaside EVO ships. She has a host of impressive features, including the Galleria Virtuosa with its LED dome, and the MSC Starship Club – the first robotic bar at sea with a humanoid robot bartender (unlike Royal Caribbean’s first robot bar at sea with two standalone arms).

MSC Starship Club

MSC Virtuosa hosts many of the best signature features of the MSC fleet, including the MSC Aurea Spa and the MSC Yacht Club – a special area of the ship with dedicated lounges and a private pool just for those who book a Yacht Club cabin.

New MSC cruise ships on order

MSC World America – 2025

MSC World America

The MSC World America is set to be the next ship to join the MSC Cruises fleet. She will be the second World-class ship to launch for the cruise line, following the recent addition of MSC World Europa in 2022.

It’s more than just a name – this super-ship will be based in the US, and will offer sailings around the Caribbean when she launches in 2025. We don’t yet know if the plan is to remain there year-round or if she will follow the plan of many other cruise ships and travel to Europe during the warmer summer months.

MSC World America is expected to be very similar to MSC World Europa – typically, MSC ships don’t vary too much in terms of structure or features within a class.

So if you want to know more about the MSC World America, I’d recommend taking a look at the features and deck plans of the MSC World Europa, at least until more information is revealed on this ship. I also have an MSC World Europa review that you may be interested in.

MSC World Asia (2026) and an unnamed World ship (2027)

There are two more ships planned for the World Class for MSC Cruises, to follow in 2026 and 2027. Or I should say at least two more – with MSC Cruises’ plans to expand rapidly, and the early success of MSC World Europa, we may see more added to the schedule.

We don’t know much about these two ships yet with their debuts still some time away, but as soon as more information is revealed I’ll let you know.

If we’ll already have MSC World Europe, MSC World America and MSC World Asia, what do you think for the last one? MSC World Africa?

Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys

Only a quick mention here since the Explora Journeys aren’t technically part of the MSC Cruises fleet – but instead, a brand new cruise line launching that will be owned by the MSC parent company.

MSC Cruises is very much a mainstream cruise line with a lot of family activities. The newest ships are beautiful and modern, but they are aimed at a wider cruising market. So it makes sense for the MSC parent company to expand out into a more luxury cruise line.

Explora Journeys is that line, with smaller ships and a focus primarily on destination experiences. The first ship – Explora I – made her debut in 2023 while there are at least 5 more ships planned to set sail between 2024 and 2028.

To conclude

It’s a really exciting time if you’re a fan of cruising with MSC. There have been a lot of new ship launches in the last couple of years – more than with any other cruise line – and there are plenty more on the horizon.

MSC isn’t a cruise line for everyone, but it has a lot of great features, especially for families. And with so many new ships expanding the capacity of the fleet, who’s to say they can’t challenge the likes of Royal Caribbean and Carnival in future?

From a cruise passenger perspective, it’s always good to have plenty of choice.

Who Owns MSC Cruises? A Look At The Massive Company Behind The Cruise Line

Most cruise lines are owned by large parent companies. If you find it tricky to keep track of which company owns which cruise line, you’re not alone!

The world’s largest cruise company is Carnival Corporation. It owns nine brands including P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Cunard. Then, we have the Royal Caribbean Group which owns not only Royal Caribbean International, but also brands like Celebrity Cruises and Silversea.

But what about MSC Cruises? Who owns MSC Cruises, and what other cruise brands do they own?

Read on for some super-interesting insights into the company behind the MSC Cruises brand…

MSC Cruises ship
MSC Seaside in Nassau

Just who are MSC Cruises?

MSC Cruises is a global cruise line based in Geneva, Switzerland. It was founded in Naples, Italy in 1989. MSC Cruises employs over 30,000 people and has 19 cruise ships, making it the fastest-growing global cruise brand.

Suggested read: MSC Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class

MSC Cruises is part of the Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) – the world’s second-largest container shipping operator with 570 container ships.

The Mediterranean Shipping Company has the following divisions:

  • MSC Cruises – Holiday cruises
  • Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) – Cargo shipping
  • Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) – Ferries
  • Società Navigazione Alta Velocità (SNAV) – Ferries
  • MSC Shipmanagement Limited – Onboard and shoreside crew
  • Terminal Investment Limited (TIL) – Port operations
  • MEDLOG – Inland logistics

The MSC Cruises arm of the business is owned by Italian billionaire Gianluigi Aponte and his family, including wife Rafaela, son Diego and daughter Alexa. Gianluigi Aponte is the founder, chairman, and MSC Cruises owner, while his family members all have key roles in the business.

With a net worth of around $17.7 billion in 2022, Gianluigi and Rafaela Aponte are some of the richest people in the shipping industry and the 94th richest people in the world according to Forbes.

The largest privately owned cruise company

This all means that MSC Cruises is the world’s largest privately-owned cruise company. While other cruise lines are publicly traded and owned by shareholders, MSC Cruises is privately owned by the Aponte family.

Because MSC Cruises is privately-owned, it doesn’t have stock. It’s not possible to buy shares in MSC as you can do with Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line.

The CEO of MSC Cruises is Gianni Onorato, an Italian with 30 years of experience in the cruise industry. He has been the CEO of MSC Cruises since 2013. Prior to that, he was the president of Costa Cruises from 2004 to 2013.

So that’s what MSC stands for!

The ‘MSC’ in MSC Cruises stands for Mediterranean Shipping Company. This is because the MSC Cruises brand is part of the same shipping company that transports cargo around the world.

The timeline of MSC

MSC Cruises was founded in 1988. However, the Aponte family’s involvement in the shipping industry dates back much further. Take a look at the timeline below to learn about the history of MSC Cruises…

  • 1675 – First record of the Aponte family’s involvement in shipping to and from Naples
  • 1970 – Gianluigi Aponte purchases a single ship and founds the Mediterranean Shipping Company
  • 1988 – MSC enters the cruise business with the purchase of the first cruise ship, Monterey
  • 2003 – MSC Cruises invests €5.5 billion on12 new ships to build the world’s most modern fleet of cruise ships
  • 2014 – MSC Cruises invests €5.1 billion on seven new cruise ships and the enlargement of four existing ships
  • 2016 – A further €3.9 billion is invested to build four World-class ships
  • 2017 – A further €2.6 billion is invested to build three more ships
  • 2019 – MSC Cruises’ private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, welcomes its first guests
  • 2020 – MSC Cruises is the first major cruise line to restart thanks to its industry-leading health and safety protocol

Fun fact: Gianluigi Aponte financed the purchase of his first cruise ship, Patricia, without a loan.

An Italian cruise line, but with international flair

MSC Cruises Cruises is an Italian cruise line. It was founded in Naples, Italy in 1989, although it’s now registered in Switzerland with headquarters in Geneva and operations offices in Naples, Genoa and Venice.

MSC Cruises offers cruises all over the world. The cruise line caters to many different nationalities with many languages being spoken on board. Announcements are often made in English, Italian, French, Spanish and German. Entertainment is mainly based around music or visuals such as acrobats and dancers, rather than comedians or lecturers.

What’s Included in MSC Cruises (And How Much is Everything Else?)

MSC Cruises can be some of the cheapest that you can book – but you need to understand exactly what that cruise fare then gets you. It’s no good assuming that you’re getting a bargain if it then turns out that you’ve got loads more that you need to fork out for.

Cruise Mummy smiling for a selfie with a large cruise ship MSC Euribia docked in the background. The ship is white with multiple decks, and various construction equipment is visible in the foreground under a cloudy sky.

What complicates matters even more is the fact that MSC offers three different ‘experiences’, all of which comes with different costs and different inclusions.

It can get a little confusing, but with this guide, I’ll make it clear what you get, and what you need to pay for, for each cruise fare you can choose.

And then you’ll know what counts as a real bargain cruise with MSC, and what actually isn’t as good a deal as you thought.

What’s Included in an MSC Cruise and What Costs Extra..?

1. Accommodation

As with any cruise line, your cruise fare covers your accommodation costs. It’s one of the main things that you’re actually paying for.

A cosy cabin on MSC Euribia cruise ship features two single beds with white linens and blue throws, separated by a nightstand. The room is decorated with framed marine-themed artwork and includes a vanity desk with a mirror and various amenities. Soft lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

And as you’d expect, you have the typical range of cabin options available:

  • Inside cabins with no view
  • Ocean View cabins that have a window
  • Balcony cabins with a private balcony space
  • Suites, offering the most space and a range of extra perks.

However, as I’ve already said, there are different cruise fares you can book with MSC, called ‘Experiences’. And the experience that you choose will determine which cabin types you’re able to book.

Experience Cabins You Can Book Choose Your Specific Cabin?
Bella Inside, Ocean View, Balcony No
Fantastica Inside, Ocean View, Balcony Yes
Aurea Suites Yes

If you book the Bella experience, you only get a Guarantee cabin – one where the cruise line will pick your room for you, and you’ll only find out where you’re staying a few days before you sail.

Close-up of MSC cruise ship highlighting Bella Balcony and Fantastica Balcony cabins, marked by red arrows, showcasing the ship's multi-tiered accommodation options.

You’ll also get the worst locations on the ship – the ones that are furthest from the restaurants or leisure amenities or those with an obstructed view.

Also, if you book a cabin for 3 or 4 people, there’s a chance that you could be split between two cabins instead, if there isn’t a larger room available.

MSC Virtuosa balcony cabin with bunk beds

This might be a good thing, but if you’re travelling with kids it could make things difficult, especially since there’s no guarantee the cabins will be next to each other. They will be on the same deck and same side, but there could be several cabins between them.

If you choose Fantastica, you’ll get to pick where on the ship your cabin will be, and if you choose Aurea you can book one of the suites.

This includes a range of normal suites, and the option of booking in the MSC Yacht Club, an exclusive part of your MSC ship that features on most newer MSC ships. These come with a range of additional perks such as a pillow menu, access to exclusive lounge and sun deck areas, and a welcome package with Prosecco and chocolates.

Regardless of whether you choose the cheapest Bella Inside cabin or the fanciest Aurea suite, you’ll always get a minibar, a TV, a safe, a hairdryer, air-con and a telephone. But you won’t always get a bed!

One cruise ship has solo rooms with sofa beds instead of a proper bed – so be warned!

Read more: MSC Bella Vs Fantastica Vs Aurea

2. Food

As with other cruise lines, MSC offers a wide range of food at no extra cost for your cruise fare.

You can enjoy the Main Dining Room or the buffet, along with a small range of other casual venues for items like burgers or pizza, and you won’t have to pay anything.

A plate of food featuring a sesame seed bun burger with a vegetable patty and sundried tomatoes, accompanied by a generous portion of golden French fries. The meal is set on a white tablecloth with silverware and a glass of sparkling water visible in the background.

But each MSC ship also has a range of speciality restaurants. These include steakhouses such as Butcher’s Cut, a variety of Asian restaurants such as the Kaito Sushi Bar or Oriental Plaza, and various other international venues including the Hola Tapas Bar, or the Indochine Restaurant. The specific venues will depend on which ship you choose.

For these restaurants, you’ll either need to pay a fixed price to dine there, or they will offer an a la carte menu, with the costs added to your account that you’ll need to settle at the end of the cruise.

A promotional banner for MSC Cruises advertises "Speciality Dining Packages" with options including Duo (two speciality dining experiences for €75), Trilogy (three speciality dining experiences for €95), The Finest Four (four speciality dining experiences for €125), L'Atelier Grill Chef's Table (€85), and Dinner and Bubbles (€115). The banner features images of gourmet food and happy diners.

MSC also offers the option of paying for a dining package. You can choose between one to five meals, and by paying in advance you can save up to 40% of the cost of paying for each meal individually when you’re on the ship.

So, that’s another way you can budget in advance and still enjoy all the experiences of your cruise ship.

3. Drinks

On an MSC cruise, there are a small selection of drinks that you’ll be able to enjoy at no extra charge – tap water, basic coffee and tea, ice tea, and juices at breakfast. But for everything else – sodas, bottled water, and alcoholic drinks, you’ll need to pay.

Cruise Mummy raises a glass of amber-colored beverage in the Main Dining Room on an MSC cruise ship, with elegant décor and attentive staff in the background, capturing a moment of joy and fine dining on a luxury voyage.

You can pay for drinks individually, if you want. A glass of soda costs around $2.25, a beer will cost around $6, and a cocktail can vary between $7 and $16 depending on how fancy a drink you’re looking for.

If you’re someone who likes to drink a lot (not just booze, but soft drinks too) then it’s worth considering a drinks package. With these, you’ll pay in advance for the duration of the cruise and then be able to enjoy unlimited drinks within your package.

There are three packages that include alcohol – Premium, Easy Plus, and Easy. There’s also an alcohol-free package that covers sodas, bottled water, speciality coffees and even soft-serve ice cream, and there’s a Minors package for younger guests.

A promotional banner for MSC Cruises highlights various drink packages with pricing. The options include the Easy Package (€47 per adult/day), Easy Plus Package (€63 per adult/day), Premium Extra Package (€87 per adult/day), Dine & Drink Package (€15 per meal or €9 per meal/day), Alcohol-Free Package (€29 per adult/day), and Minors Package (€20 per child/day). The banner features images of beverages and encourages guests to upgrade their drink packages.

The cost for the packages will vary depending on where you’re sailing and how long you’re cruising – British guests will pay between £64 and £77.05 per day for the Premium Extra package, for example.

Never jump into buying a drinks package without doing some basic budgeting first, as you might overpay if you don’t drink much each day. My drinks package calculator can help you work it out.

One thing to be mindful of is that the mini bar costs extra, even if you have a drink package. The only way you get to enjoy your mini bar for free is if you stay in the Yacht Club.

A minibar price list from MSC Cruises displays various items and their prices. Spirits include gin, vodka, and whisky at £9 each. Soft drinks like fruit juice, sodas, and ice tea are priced at £3.5 each. Mineral water ranges from £2.5 to £3.5, and beers such as Heineken and Beck's cost £8 each. Snacks, including peanuts, chocolate-covered peanuts, mixed nuts, and chips, are priced between £3.5 and £4.5. The form includes spaces for cabin number, quantity consumed, and total cost.

4. Room Service

On every MSC cruise, guests are welcome to enjoy room service on those occasions where they would rather dine in their room, or they just want a snack.

A breakfast menu card from MSC Cruises allows guests to indicate their desired quantity for each item.

If you’ve booked the Fantastica or Aurea experiences, then room service is available 24-hours a day and there’s no charge at all for delivery. Some free items are available on the menu, but there are some that have a charge – you just won’t pay for the delivery.

If you’ve booked the cheaper Bella experience, then there will be a $4.99 delivery fee. This is per order, not per person, so you’ll only pay the single fee even if you’re ordering food for everyone in your cabin. You might also want to add a tip on for your budget, so bear that in mind.

5. Entertainment

MSC cruise ships offer a range of entertainment every evening, in the main theatre but also in some other venues around the ship. This can include singers, dancers, acted performances and more. Comedy isn’t too common, just because of the multi-lingual nature of the ships.

A vibrant stage performance on a cruise ship features a group of performers dressed in futuristic costumes under dynamic lighting. The background is illuminated with striking red and orange patterns, creating an energetic atmosphere. The audience is seated, watching the engaging and lively show.

None of this entertainment costs anything to enjoy – it’s all covered by the cost of the cruise fare.

It’s a nice way to pass the evening but make sure you head to the venue as early as you can if you want the best seats. The venues aren’t always designed very well and it’s not uncommon to be stuck behind a pillar, or for a venue to become very crowded.

6. Activities

MSC’s ships are packed with fun things to do during the day, but not all of them are covered by the cost of your cruise fare.

An arcade on a cruise ship features various games, including motorcycle racing simulators, air hockey, and other interactive attractions. The area is brightly lit with colorful neon lights, creating an exciting and playful atmosphere. Large windows offer a view of the sea, adding to the unique experience of gaming at sea.

The waterparks are free, so you can swim or ride the slides as much as you want, but pretty much everything else will have a fee that you’ll need to pay. Some examples include:

  • Bowling – typically £25 for 30 minutes
  • Flight Simulator – £15 per go
  • Formula 1 Simulator – £12 per go
  • Arcade games – between £1.50 and £5
  • 4D Cinema – £8

Those prices can quickly add up. But there is a way you can save – you can buy a Fun Pass.

A sign about the MSC fun pass that is on display for people to see

The Fun Pass works differently depending on which ship you’re cruising on – for some, it offers all-inclusive activities, while on others, it gives you a set amount of bonus credit. So if you paid £100, you’d get £40 extra free to spend on the activities on the ship.

Paying for a Fun Pass doesn’t just save you money, it also makes it easier to budget for the activities. You can set a rule where, once the Fun Pass is spent, that’s the activities budget done.

7. Kids’ Clubs

MSC Cruises has some excellent kids clubs onboard, and is one of the few cruise lines to properly cater for babies. So it’s an even bigger relief to know that the kids’ clubs on the ship are available at no extra charge.

Two children pose happily with certificates in front of a large LEGO sailor statue at an MSC Cruise Kids' Club. The boy on the left holds colorful streamers and a "Congratulations" certificate, while the girl on the right, wearing a Minnie Mouse hoodie and a face mask, holds a similar certificate and streamers. The background features bright colors and playful decorations, enhancing the fun atmosphere.

You can even enjoy free babysitting for babies and toddlers during the day in one-hour slots, so that you can enjoy your lunch and dinner in peace if you want to. You just need to make sure you’ve booked using the registration form.

Group babysitting is also available for children late at night, if you want to enjoy the nightlife on your ship. It’s available for children aged 3 and up, provided they are potty trained, and it costs $6 per child for the first hour, or $10 per child for the full three hours. The service is offered between 11 pm and 2 am.

8. Service Charges

As if the different experience fares you can book with MSC weren’t confusing enough, there’s one more quirk of MSC that can make budgeting a little tricker – daily gratuities. And that’s because sometimes they’re included, and sometimes they aren’t.

A crew member wearing a mask and uniform serves a guest seated on the deck of a cruise ship. The guest, a bald man with tattoos, is receiving a drink from a cart filled with various beverages. The scene takes place under a bright, sunny sky, with the ship's sleek exterior and other passengers in the background.

If you’re cruising from the UK, then the tips will be included. If you’re cruising from the US, then they won’t be, and you should expect to pay up to $14 per person, per day on your cruise.

For cruises in Europe it can vary but the cost will be similar if they aren’t included – make sure you check.

You’ll also want to remember other tips that you might want to pay – such as the luggage porters at port. It’s custom to give them a small tip and it helps to make sure they look after your bags for you.

9. WiFi

Kids using the internet

WiFi internet access is almost never included as standard with a cruise fare, and with MSC that’s no different – if you want to get online, you’ll need to pay extra.

The good news is that MSC’s packages are very well priced, with some of the lowest WiFi charges of any cruise line.

And, you aren’t forced to pay for the full duration of your cruise if you don’t want to – you can pay by the day, though it does work out a lot cheaper to pay for a full week.

There are three packages you can pick from:

  • Social – grants access to popular social media apps such as Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Pinterest, but you won’t be able to use them for video calls
  • Surfer – everything in the Social package, but access to the web/emails
  • Streamer – full access to the internet including video and audio streaming.
WiFi Package Cost Per Day Cost For A 7-Night Cruise
Social From €3.90 From €14.90
Surfer From €9.90 From €29.90
Streamer From €19.90 From €59.90

If you don’t want to pay for the WiFi, you can usually find free WiFi while you’re in port – chain restaurants, some bars and hotels are good places to try. Just make sure your phone is on airplane mode at other times, as roaming charges (especially at sea) can be astronomical.

10. Laundry

If you’re on a shorter MSC cruise, you’ll probably never need to use the laundry services, but for longer cruises, it can be more cost-effective to have some clothes washed instead of buying a whole holiday wardrobe.

MSC doesn’t offer self-service laundry unlike some other cruise lines, which means you have to use the laundry service. You can pay per item, or you can pay for a laundry package.

This image is a pricing list for laundry services on an MSC cruise. It details the costs in pounds and euros for various types of clothing items for both gentlemen and ladies, such as shirts, trousers, dresses, and skirts, along with the cost for other items like pillowcases and blankets. The list is presented in multiple languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian.

On a per-item basis, expect to pay around €3 per t-shirt or €9 for a dress. Packages start at €15 which gets you 10 items – so you can save a lot buying a package instead of paying for everything individually.

11. Flights and Transfers

One thing that isn’t included with an MSC cruise fare as standard is your flights. It’s possible to book a package through the cruise line, but most of the fares you see advertised will be cruise only.

A view from an airplane window shows the wing of the aircraft against a backdrop of a clear blue sky and the sun shining brightly. Below, a landscape of fields and rivers is partially covered in snow, with clouds scattered across the horizon, creating a serene and picturesque aerial scene.

Often you can save by booking your flights separately, either yourself or by using a travel agent to put together a package for you. You just need to be aware that, if something happens to your flight, the cruise ship won’t wait for you.

Give yourself plenty of time to get to your embarkation port, and make sure you have insurance. If you can, it’s best to fly the day before and book an overnight hotel so that you’re guaranteed to make the ship in time.

Don’t forget transfers, too – you need to get from the airport to the cruise port after all, and that’s another cost to factor in.

And if you’re sailing from Southampton (or from a port that’s in your own country) then you’ll need to still think about how you’re getting there. If you’re using public transport, budget for those costs, and if you’re driving, you’ll need to think about parking.

12. Shore Excursions

Shore excursions aren’t included in your cruise fare, and depending on the type of excursion, they can be pretty expensive if you book through the cruise line.

My son on an MSC shore excursion. He smiles with his arms outstretched, standing in front of the iconic Stonehenge monument. He is wearing a black hoodie with a "Love Our Planet" design and blue shorts featuring a Mickey Mouse patch. The grassy field and ancient stones create a historic and picturesque backdrop under a cloudy sky.

You have alternative options – in some ports, you might not need an excursion, and you can just wander off on your own to explore.

In others, look for local bus services or book excursions with a third party. You can often save a lot doing this, but the downside is that there’s a risk the ship will leave you behind if your excursion delays you in any way.

You could, of course, just stay on the ship – nobody’s forcing you to get off an explore, and this is a great way of keeping costs down.

To Conclude

MSC Cruises can be very cheap, though for the lowest fares, you might end up with a cabin in a less-than-ideal location. You also need to think about drinks prices, and the activities you want to enjoy around the ship.

Look into the extra packages that are available. You can make your MSC cruise all-inclusive (or as good as) if you pay for a drinks package and a Fun Pass, but only if you’ll definitely make use of them.

With a bit of planning, and working out how much you’re likely to spend on extras, you can make sure you’ve budgeted for a great cruise with MSC.
