Princess Cruises Orders Three New Voyager Class Ships From Fincantieri

Princess Cruises has placed an order for three new Voyager Class ships with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, marking the line’s biggest and most advanced ship platform to date and setting up fleet growth through to 2039.

The vessels are scheduled for delivery in late 2035, 2038 and 2039, and will become the largest ships in the Princess fleet.

Star Princess

The new class will build on the foundation laid by the line’s Sphere Class ships, Sun Princess and Star Princess, but Princess said the vessels will feature newly designed outer decks, staterooms and Piazza spaces aimed at better serving its global customer base and varied deployment plans.

Each ship is expected to come in at 183,000 gross tons and carry around 4,700 guests.

Like Sun Princess and Star Princess, the Voyager Class ships will be dual-fuel vessels powered primarily by liquefied natural gas, with Princess and parent company Carnival Corporation continuing to position LNG as the key fuel choice for their next generation of newbuilds. The three ships will be constructed at Fincantieri’s yard in Monfalcone, Italy.

Gus Antorcha, president of Princess Cruises, said the new ships are being shaped by research into what both existing and future guests want from the brand.

“The Voyager Class will delight both our loyal guests and attract the next generation of Princess guests. We have been leveraging extensive customer and agent research to strike the right balance between evolving our proven winners and introducing new concepts and partnerships grounded in what matters to our current and future guests,

“From exceptional dining and inviting pool environments to elevated entertainment and beautifully reimagined spaces throughout the ship, we are leaving no area untouched as we thoughtfully evolve the Princess experience.”

Gus Antorcha, Princess Cruises president

Fincantieri also framed the agreement as a major long-term boost for its orderbook and cruise business.

“We are delighted to announce this new agreement with Princess Cruises, which confirms the strength of a long-standing and forward-looking partnership. These new orders secure a robust workload for our shipyards through 2039 and further support the profitable development of our cruise business, as outlined in our 2026–2030 Industrial Plan.

“With the new Voyager Class ships, we are once again leveraging Fincantieri’s distinctive expertise in sustainable, next generation shipbuilding, supporting Princess Cruises in its growth trajectory and reaffirming our role as a trusted industrial partner for the evolution of the cruise industry.”

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and managing director of Fincantieri

Princess has not yet revealed full design specifications or named venues for the ships, saying more details on the platform’s features and onboard offering will be released later.

Voyager Class Will Push Princess Beyond Sphere Class

The order is significant not only because it introduces an entirely new ship class, but because it takes Princess beyond the recently launched Sphere Class platform. Sun Princess entered service as the first Sphere Class ship, while Star Princess was officially delivered in September 2025 as the second vessel in that series. The new Voyager ships will be larger than both.

That gives Princess a clear long-range growth path at a time when cruise lines are continuing to favour bigger, more feature-heavy ships that can support a broader mix of accommodation, dining and entertainment spaces.

Carnival’s LNG Fleet Expansion Continues

For Carnival Corporation, the agreements represent its 19th, 20th and 21st LNG-based ships. The company said the Princess order forms part of its wider fleet enhancement strategy, and it also noted that, beyond these three vessels, it already has seven additional ships under contract for delivery between 2027 and 2033.

Fincantieri said the deal was formalised during Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, underlining the scale of the commitment from one of the industry’s biggest operators.

Separate industry coverage has reported the value of the three-ship package at more than €2 billion, although Princess itself did not disclose a figure and instead described the agreements as commercially significant and subject to financing and customary conditions.

With deliveries stretching from the mid-2030s to the end of that decade, the order also shows how far ahead the major cruise groups are now planning their fleet strategy, particularly for LNG-capable ships designed around higher-capacity, next-generation platforms.

Royal Caribbean Just Opened Bookings for a Record-Breaking 2027-28 Asia Season

Royal Caribbean has announced new sailings across Asia, with a record 22 destinations in China, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam.

On April 16, 2026, the cruise line revealed the 2027-28 season for Spectrum of the Seas, and the new sailings offer a ton of variety for all kinds of durations.

Whether you are looking for a quick three-night escape or an 11-night deep dive into Asian culture, the new lineup has a little bit of everything.

Historic Firsts and New Records

Royal Caribbean was never one to shy away from a challenge, and this new announcement shows a renewed commitment to Asia with a whole lot of firsts for the upcoming season on the Quantum-class ship.

  • A Record-Breaking Reach: The cruise line is visiting a record 22 destinations, the most expansive lineup for the region yet.
  • New One-Way Journeys: In a first for this lineup, guests can now sail one way between major hubs like Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. This allows you to start in one country and end in another, offering much more flexibility if you want to extend your vacation on land.
  • Extended Stays: To allow for more time in port, several itineraries now feature overnight stays in iconic cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Beijing. This gives you two full days to explore historical sites or enjoy the local nightlife without rushing back to the ship.

On one cruise in May of 2027, Spectrum of the Seas will depart from Tokyo, Japan on a one-way 9-day sailing that will visit Kagoshima, Nagasaki, and Beijing before ending in Shanghai, offering a very unique experience with the cruise line.

But besides visiting major cities and capitals, Royal Caribbean is offering other destinations as well.

The new itineraries offer visits to Mount Fuji (Shimizu) for iconic Japanese views, the world-renowned seafood markets of Busan, South Korea, and the volcanic beauty of Jeju Island. The expansion also reaches deep into Vietnam, offering easy access to the historic sites of Da Nang and Hue.

Seasonal Highlights

In May 2027, the Spring Blossom Journey is timed perfectly to catch the peonies in Beijing and the wisteria in Japan. If you prefer the crisp air of fall, the Autumn Foliage Escape in October 2027 heads to Sapporo and Seoul to enjoy the colors of the changing leaves.

Holiday Celebrations at Sea

Royal Caribbean is also offering special festive sailings out of Hong Kong:

  • Thanksgiving: An 11-night adventure through South Korea and Japan.
  • Christmas: A 9-night journey to Fukuoka and Nagasaki.
  • New Year’s: A 5-night trip to Okinawa that includes an overnight stay to ring in 2028.

Benjamin Bouldin, President, Royal Caribbean, Greater China, said that the “more immersive itineraries are designed to meet the evolving preferences of Chinese vacationers,” adding, “This new lineup reflects our continued commitment to the China market and our ambition to deliver more diverse and immersive vacations.”

Bookings for the 2027-28 Asia season are now available on the Royal Caribbean website here.

State Of The Industry Keynote Headlines Seatrade Cruise Global

Building on strong momentum and record attendance, Seatrade Cruise Global 2026 continued Tuesday with its State of the Industry keynote, as the sector’s top leaders took the stage to examine growth, demand, and the forces shaping the next era of cruising.

Moderated by CNBC correspondent Contessa Brewer, the keynote brought together leaders from Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Group, MSC Group’s Cruise Division and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, alongside CLIA President & CEO Charles “Bud” Darr, for a wide-ranging discussion on the industry’s trajectory.

State of the Industry Keynote

“Cruising, ultimately, is about reducing friction so that people can enjoy the hospitality that we give them,” Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation. “With our crew on board, the food that we give them, the entertainment that we provide and the places that we take them. And our destination partners are a huge piece of that. That’s why they cruise.”

Across the discussion, leaders pointed to sustained global demand and continued expansion, while acknowledging the challenges that come with growth — from infrastructure and policy to fleet development and evolving guest expectations.

“The new generation of cruisers have somewhat different values and also are willing to spend money on somewhat different experiences than in the past. The industry is evolving to satisfy that need as well as the existing customer base,” said Bud Darr, President and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association. “We’re also finding a remarkably higher level of people that had never cruised before that really want to, and I think that means our message is getting through.”

Key topics included the industry’s orderbook, access to new markets, private destination development and the role of sustainability in shaping long-term strategy. The conversation reinforced a central theme: cruise is entering a new phase of growth, one that requires balancing scale with strategic investment across destinations, fleets and guest experience.

River Cruise and Expedition Sectors Accelerate

Throughout the day, panels expanded on these themes across key regions and segments. A European Cruising CEO panel highlighted the region’s continued importance as both a source market and destination, while addressing the realities of tightening environmental regulations, including emissions controls and the EU’s evolving policy landscape. Leaders discussed how the industry is adapting to these pressures while maintaining growth, with a focus on year-round operations, infrastructure readiness and alignment with long-term sustainability goals.

Growth across cruise segments also took center stage. In the River Cruise CEO panel, executives examined a surge in ship orders and demand, raising key questions about capacity, new itineraries and the long-term balance between supply and demand across major waterways.

Meanwhile, the Expedition Leaders’ Debate highlighted how expedition cruising is entering a new phase of maturity, with expanding geographies, evolving guest expectations and increased focus on responsible growth and lower-impact technologies.

“Sixty years ago, the father of our founder, led the very first non-scientific expedition to Antarctica with 53 travelers, and back then it was equivalent to a mission to the moon. And that started that whole segment,”  said Natalya Leahy, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions. “In this experiential travel segment – it’s not where we go, it’s about how we go.”

New Leadership Ushers in a Fresh Perspective

The New Presidents Panel brought together a new generation of cruise line leaders across segments — from luxury and expedition to mainstream and emerging brands — offering insight into how companies are evolving to attract new audiences, adapt to shifting consumer preferences and navigate an increasingly competitive landscape. Discussions touched on everything from AI and onboard innovation to deployment strategy and the changing profile of cruise customers.

Major Brand Investment Shows Continued Industry Growth

The day also saw significant brand-level investment announcements, including a major update from Holland America Line, which unveiled Holland America Evolution: a multiyear initiative to revitalize six ships across its fleet. Described as the most ambitious guest experience update in the company’s 153-year history, the program will deliver a comprehensive bow-to-stern transformation, bringing elements of its Pinnacle Class ships to a broader portion of the fleet.  American Cruise Lines also discussed a broader expansion of its U.S. fleet, including the upcoming launch of American Encore, which will become the first-ever riverboat christened in Idaho. This news underscores the industry’s growing focus on domestic cruising and emerging river regions such as the Columbia and Snake Rivers.

As the week continues, Seatrade Cruise Global will further explore the forces shaping the cruise industry’s future — from destinations and technology to food and beverage, sustainability, and guest experience. Seatrade Cruise Global 2026 runs through April 16 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, bringing together more than 13,000 registrants and 650 exhibitors from across the global cruise community.

Holland America Line Unveils Largest Fleet Update In Its 153-Year History

Building on strong momentum and record performance, Holland America Line announced Holland America Evolution, a bold multiyear investment to thoughtfully reimagine six ships. Representing the most ambitious guest experience update in the company’s 153-year history, Evolution will deliver a comprehensive bow-to-stern revitalization while bringing the best of its Pinnacle Class ships across most of the fleet.

The multiyear renovation will take place ship by ship, delivering substantial transformation focused on expanding onboard choice, adding restaurant and bar options, and refreshing and reinventing key guest spaces — including new stateroom and suite categories — while maintaining the spacious design and intimate ship feel guests value most.

“Our guests have been very clear about what they love about our ships and what they want to see more of, and Holland America Evolution is our answer to that,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president, Holland America Line. “This investment allows us to introduce experiences and venues that are new to the fleet, add Pinnacle Class favorites like Grand Dutch Café, and create new stateroom categories designed for the way people travel today, all while preserving the perfectly sized ship experience that defines Holland America.”

Signature Class and Vista Class Renovations

Evolution will span the four Holland America Vista Class ships — Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, and Noordam — and the two Signature Class ships, Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. The company will invest over $500 million across these ships in enhancements to guest spaces and additional staterooms and suites, adding capacity and providing more choice for guests.

The cruise line is working closely with longtime shipbuilding partner Fincantieri, which built all 11 ships in the company’s fleet. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to quality and precision as each ship’s enhancements take shape.

Oosterdam Debuts First Chapter of Holland America Evolution

Oosterdam will be the first ship to undergo renovations, debuting in the fall of 2027.  Ahead of additional details to be announced, Holland America is offering a first look at several guest-focused enhancements on the ship. These include the addition of the Grand Dutch Café, a longtime guest favorite previously available only on Pinnacle Class ships, as well as new stateroom offerings, including purpose-built Solo Verandahs and expansive panoramic suites. Together, the updates reflect a focused investment in comfort, choice, and experience shaped directly by guest feedback.

New and Expanded Staterooms and Suites

As part of Holland America Evolution, accommodations will be expanded and reimagined to offer more guest choice and flexibility. The project will include a significant increase in stateroom inventory for Oosterdam, adding 76 staterooms while also preserving the “room at the rail” guests love. New and enhanced accommodations debuting on Oosterdam include:

  • NEW: Solo Verandahs: Thirty purpose-built staterooms created specifically for solo travelers. Each features a private balcony, dedicated workspace and full Holland America Line amenities, responding to strong and growing guest demand.
  • NEW: Bridgeview Suites: Two new suites offering sweeping 180-degree ocean views through panoramic windows, with 900 square feet of space, a wraparound balcony and separate living and sleeping areas designed to maximize comfort and ocean views. Located at the forward part of the ship, these suites emulate the perspective that can be seen from the ship’s bridge, inspiring the name “Bridgeview.”
  • Reimagined Pinnacle Suite: The most expansive suite ever introduced on a Vista Class ship, offering 1,550 square feet of refined living space with panoramic views, a private balcony, separate living room, powder room, bedroom, ensuite bath, and walk-in closet.
  • Vista Suites debut on Oosterdam: Twenty-four Vista Suites, familiar to guests who have sailed on Pinnacle Class ships, will be introduced on Oosterdam for the first time, offering spacious, light-filled premium accommodations with a comfortable sitting area, oversized windows, and a private verandah ideal for taking in ocean views.

Grand Dutch Café Comes to More Guests

As part of Holland America Evolution, the Grand Dutch Café is expanding to reach more guests with its debut on Oosterdam. Previously available only on Pinnacle Class ships, the venue’s addition reflects a continued focus on experiences guests consistently rank among their favorites. Inspired by European café culture and rooted in the cruise line’s Dutch heritage, the Grand Dutch Café is a relaxed, all‑day gathering place designed to fit naturally into the flow of the day, whether guests are stopping by briefly or settling in. Located on Deck 3 near the atrium, it serves as a welcoming anchor on board, offering an informal yet refined setting that reflects the communal role cafés play in everyday European life and reinforcing Holland America Line’s unhurried approach to travel.

“This is a great moment for Holland America and our guests, and we’re just getting started,” added Bodensteiner. “Over the coming months, we’ll be unveiling several more exciting additions to Oosterdam as well as the other five ships that are part of this evolution.”

Revitalizing the Fleet, Sustainably

On Oosterdam and throughout the renovations, sustainability is an important element of the updates, with a focus on revitalizing the fleet while improving efficiency and reducing overall environmental impact. The line is refreshing and replacing interiors with a strong focus on waste reduction and circular design, prioritizing upcycling and material reuse while bringing greater lightness and an elevated, timeless look and feel.

Behind the scenes, the company is making targeted technical investments to improve energy efficiency. This work includes smarter power management and enhanced system performance aimed at reducing energy demand and lowering operational carbon intensity over time.

What’s Next

Additional details about Oosterdam’s renovations, including new voyages available following the upgrade, will be shared in the coming weeks for guests at hollandamerica.com/evolution. The site will give real-time updates as plans for all six ships are revealed.

Princess Cruises Announces Largest-Ever Japan Expansion with Two Ships in Tokyo

Princess Cruises just announced its largest-ever expansion into Asia with plans to send two ships to Tokyo for the 2027/2028 season.

Princess cruises sending two ships to Japan

For the first time, the company will homeport two ships in Tokyo for a full season that will feature 85 departures, 52 itineraries, and 41 destinations across three countries: Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

The two ships being sent over are Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess. The interesting thing about these ships is that they were both built right in Japan at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard in Nagasaki.

While Diamond Princess is a veteran of cruises in Japan, and has been a fan-favorite in Japan for years, this 2028 season marks the first time the Sapphire Princess will join her to homeport in Tokyo for a full season.

Cherry Blossom Season

Princess has mapped out these cruises to literally “chase the bloom” of the cherry blossoms.   And taking a cruise around Japan to see these gorgeous blooms is probably the easiest way to do it.

Since the flowers peak at different times as you move from the southern islands toward the north, these itineraries are timed to put you in the right spot at the right moment.

It’s basically a front-row seat to Japan’s most famous natural show.

Summer Festivals and Late-Nights

The summer months in Japan are all about the festivals, and Princess is leaning in with late-night stays in six different ports, including Aomori, Kochi, and Osaka.

This is a game-changer because you aren’t rushing back to the ship by 5:00 PM, a major complaint for some cruisers on short times in port.

You can actually stay out to see the massive glowing floats at the Aomori Nebuta Festival or see the street dancing at the newly added Osaka Bon Odori.

It’s Not Just Japan

While Japan is the headliner on this news, these ships have other more extensive itineraries as well across Southeast Asia, too. We’re talking about a massive nine-country run that includes Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

These itineraries are designed for “slow travel,” with many voyages lasting up to 28 days.

You could be exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam one week and taking a tuk-tuk tour through Bangkok the next. They’ve even scheduled an overnight stay in Laem Chabang so you can experience Bangkok’s legendary nightlife without a curfew.

Perfect Ships for the Job

Besides the fitting thought that two ships built in Japan are returning to the region, the selection of these vessels is also perfect because of their size.  They hit what you might call the “Goldilocks” size for this region:

  • The Perfect Scale: Both ships sit at around 115,875 gross tons with a capacity of about 2,700 guests. This makes them large enough to feel like a floating resort but small enough to navigate the tighter coastal ports that “mega-ships” simply can’t reach.
  • The “Onsen” Experience: Because the Diamond Princess was built specifically for this market, it features the Izumi Japanese Bath. It is the largest traditional bathhouse experience at sea and the perfect way to unwind after exploring UNESCO sites like the Sado Island Gold Mines.
  • Authentic Dining: You can find Edomae-style sushi onboard at Makoto Ocean, created by Chef Makoto Okuwa, making the transition from the city to the ship feel seamless.

Bottom Line

With 96 total departures across the entire Asia program, Princess is showing the cruise line is ready to offer their guests more. Whether you are there for the history, the food, or the 19 different UNESCO World Heritage sites on the list, it’s a huge opportunity to see Asia in a whole new way.

After wanting to visit Japan for years myself, I’m already looking at dates that might fit my schedule.

Jim Berra, Princess Cruises Chief Commercial Officer, made this comment on the announcement:

“This is the most immersive Japan season we’ve ever introduced and one that reflects how our guests want to experience the destination today. With Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess homeporting in Tokyo for the first time, late‑night stays timed to Japan’s most celebrated summer festivals, and sailings that visit all four main islands during cherry blossom and fall foliage seasons, we’re delivering unprecedented access to the culture, cuisine and traditions that define Japan. Paired with longer, destination‑rich Southeast Asia voyages that connect multiple countries in a single journey, this program offers a depth, scale and authenticity that simply doesn’t exist elsewhere in the region.”

Holland America Line Unveils $500 Million Fleet Overhaul With Ambitious Evolution Programme

Holland America Line has confirmed plans for a sweeping, multi-year refurbishment initiative that will see six of its ships extensively upgraded as part of a $500 million investment aimed at modernising the fleet while preserving its hallmark mid-sized ship experience.

Dubbed Holland America Evolution, the programme represents the largest upgrade project in the cruise line’s history. It will focus on four Vista-class ships, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam, alongside the Signature-class vessels Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam.

The upgrades will introduce new venues, additional accommodation categories and updated public spaces across each ship, with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, which originally constructed all six vessels, appointed to carry out the work.

“Our guests have been very clear about what they love about our ships and what they want to see more of, and Holland America Evolution is our answer to that,

“This investment allows us to introduce experiences and venues that are new to the fleet, add Pinnacle Class favourites like Grand Dutch Café, and create new stateroom categories designed for the way people travel today, all while preserving the perfectly sized ship experience that defines Holland America.”

Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line.

While the cruise line has not yet released full details for each vessel, it has confirmed that the scope of work will vary between ships and may evolve over time. The emphasis will remain on enhancing the onboard guest experience, though technical improvements are also expected.

First Major Refurbishment Planned For Oosterdam

The first ship scheduled to undergo the Evolution transformation will be Oosterdam, which entered service in 2003. Although the vessel received a brief refurbishment in April 2025, that work was limited in scope, focusing mainly on cosmetic updates such as an expanded casino and refreshed spa areas.

The upcoming Evolution overhaul will be far more extensive. While specific dry dock dates have not yet been announced, Oosterdam is expected to re-enter service in autumn 2027 with its full range of upgrades. Sailings following the refurbishment are due to go on sale from 6th May 2026.

Among the most notable additions will be the introduction of the Grand Dutch Café, previously exclusive to Pinnacle-class ships. The venue is expected to serve as a central social hub, offering speciality coffees, Dutch-inspired snacks and a curated selection of Dutch and Belgian beers.

Grand Dutch Cafe

Accommodation enhancements will also be significant. Plans include 30 new Solo Verandah cabins, each featuring a private balcony, catering to the growing number of solo travellers. Two new Bridgeview Suites will provide approximately 900 square feet of space, complete with wraparound balconies and panoramic 180-degree views.

The Pinnacle Suite will be redesigned to offer more than 1,500 square feet of space, while 24 additional Vista Suites will also be introduced as part of the reconfiguration.

Further announcements detailing specific upgrades across the wider fleet are expected in the coming weeks as the project develops.

Sustainability Central To Revitalisation Strategy

Sustainability will play a key role throughout the Evolution programme, particularly as the ships involved will be more than two decades old by the time their upgrades are completed.

Holland America Line has indicated that the refurbishment work will prioritise material reuse and upcycling wherever possible, alongside targeted technical enhancements to improve energy efficiency.

These measures are intended to extend the operational lifespan of the vessels while reducing their environmental footprint, ensuring they continue to deliver a premium cruise experience for years to come.

Two new Bridgeview Suites will offer 180-degree ocean views and have 900 square feet of living space. Each suite, located at the front of the ship, will have a wraparound balcony.

The cruise line is reimaging their Pinnacle Suite, the most expansive suite on Vista class ships at 1,550 square feet. These suites have panoramic views, a private balcony, separate living room, powder room, bedroom, ensuite bath and walk-in closet.

Holland America is adding 24 Vista Suites on Oosterdam for the first time. They offer spacious, light-filled premium accommodations with a comfortable sitting area, oversized windows and a private verandah.

Grand Dutch Café

The insanely popular Grand Dutch Café is currently only offered on Pinnacle class vessels but will now be added to more Holland America ships. It is inspired by European café culture and rooted in the cruise line’s Dutch heritage.

Included in the renovations on Oosterdam are improvements to sustainability to help improve efficiency and reducing overall environmental impact.

Holland America Line is refreshing and replacing interiors with a strong focus on waste reduction and circular design, prioritizing upcycling and material reuse while bringing greater lightness and an elevated, timeless look and feel.

The cruise line is enhancing system performance to reduce energy demand and lower operational carbon intensity over time.

Beth Bodensteiner, president, Holland America Line, gave the following statement about the new ship upgrades:

“Our guests have been very clear about what they love about our ships and what they want to see more of, and Holland America Evolution is our answer to that.
