Royal Caribbean has confirmed plans for its next record-setting cruise ship, revealing that its fourth Icon-class vessel will be named Hero of the Seas and will debut in August 2027 from Miami.
The newbuild, which will measure 248,663 gross tonnes, continues the line’s push into ultra-large, family-focused ships and will follow in the footsteps of Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas and the forthcoming Legend of the Seas.
However, while the overall concept remains consistent, Hero of the Seas will introduce a range of new features alongside familiar highlights from the class.
Bookings are set to open first for Crown & Anchor Society members on 1st April 2026, followed by general sales on 2nd April 2026.
More Dining And Entertainment Experiences
A key addition on board will be the Orleans Parish Supper Club, a New Orleans-inspired dining venue offering multi-course menus paired with live jazz and craft cocktails.
Drawing on the atmosphere of the French Quarter in the early 20th century, the venue will serve Cajun and Creole cuisine and represents the latest evolution of Royal Caribbean’s themed supper club concept.
The ship will feature a total of 28 dining venues, combining new concepts with established favourites such as Izumi, Chops Grille and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar.
Casual options including Sorrento’s, El Loco Fresh and Basecamp will also return, alongside the AquaDome Market food hall, which will introduce four new stalls in addition to returning outlets like Crème de la Crêpe and Simply Pressed.
Royal Railway – Hero Station will also be installed, marking the third ship in the fleet to feature the immersive, train-themed dining experience that blends storytelling, technology and cuisine.
Elsewhere, a new venue in the Surfside neighbourhood will host hands-on cooking classes aimed at families, offering a mix of beginner and more advanced culinary sessions.
Expanded Attractions And Accommodation Options
Hero of the Seas is set to further expand the activity offering that has defined the Icon class. The Category 6 waterpark will debut two new family raft slides, including what Royal Caribbean describes as the first funnel raft slide at sea.
The ship will also introduce Coconut Cove, a new Caribbean-inspired pool located near The Lime and Coconut bar.
Guests will be able to relax on in-water loungers with poolside service while overlooking the Central Park neighbourhood.
In total, the vessel will feature nine pools, including expanded adults-only areas and enhanced family spaces such as Splashaway Bay.
Thrill attractions will return, including Crown’s Edge, a combination of skywalk and zip line suspended 154 feet above the ocean, as well as the FlowRider surf simulator, rock climbing walls, mini golf and multi-sport courts.
Accommodation will see further innovation with the introduction of the Ultimate Family Treehouse, a three-level suite designed for multi-generational groups.
The accommodation includes a rooftop terrace, private whirlpool, dedicated teen space and multiple bedrooms with balconies.
Other options will range from Surfside Family Suites to high-end Royal Loft Suites and Icon Loft Suites.
“Icon Class truly set a new standard for family vacations, and Hero of the Seas takes that vision even further. With more water, more thrills and more choices for all ages, we’re continuing to build on what our guests love about Royal Caribbean and delivering the experiences families are looking for when vacationing together.”
Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean
Caribbean Itineraries From Miami
Hero of the Seas will operate seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami, with every sailing including a visit to Royal Caribbean’s private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.
Ports of call are expected to include destinations such as Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, Roatán in Honduras, as well as Philipsburg in St Maarten and Charlotte Amalie in St Thomas.
The ship will form part of Royal Caribbean’s rapidly expanding Icon-class programme, which continues to redefine the upper limits of cruise ship size and onboard offerings, particularly for the family market.

A cruise ship proposal that did not go to plan has captured millions of views online, after a Texas couple shared their memorable engagement story nearly nine years later.
The now-married pair became engaged aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Breeze in October 2017, but a timing mix-up by the ship’s dining crew meant celebrations began before the proposal had even happened.
The incident recently resurfaced after Amanda posted a video of the moment on TikTok, where it has since attracted more than 2.1 million views and thousands of comments.
The couple had been sailing from Galveston on what was intended to be a family holiday aboard the Dream Class vessel, which can accommodate up to 3,690 guests.
Proposal Plans Go Awry At Sea
Gary Bratton III had carefully arranged the proposal in advance, purchasing an engagement ring from the ship’s onboard Effy jewellery store and coordinating with dining staff to deliver it at the start of dinner service.
The plan was simple. The ring would arrive at the table, prompting Gary to ask Amanda the question.
At the end of the meal, the serving team approached the table with a dessert, complete with a candle, while singing a celebratory “Happy Engagement to You”. The problem was that Gary had not yet proposed.
The video shows Gary appearing caught off guard, while Amanda looks confused as the premature celebration unfolds.
Thinking quickly, Gary adapted to the situation. As the crew continued singing, he got down on one knee and proceeded with the proposal, receiving a “yes” moments later as fellow diners applauded.
Amanda later reflected on the experience in her TikTok caption, writing: “That time Carnival celebrated our engagement before he proposed! Ah, good times! Best story all these years later!”
Mixed Reactions From Viewers
The viral clip has prompted a wide range of reactions from viewers, with opinions divided over whether the moment was spoiled or made more memorable by the mishap.
Some commenters expressed frustration on Gary’s behalf, suggesting the proposal had likely been planned very differently.
Others, however, praised his reaction, noting that his ability to stay calm and embrace the unexpected moment added to its charm.
One viewer commented that while Gary initially appeared upset, his quick thinking made the proposal “perfect in its own special way”.
Several also described his response as a positive sign for handling challenges in a relationship, highlighting adaptability as an important quality in marriage.
Amanda has clarified that she shared the video simply to revisit a funny and meaningful memory, rather than to criticise the cruise line or seek any response.
Carnival Cruise Line has not publicly commented on the viral moment, though the story has resonated with many cruise fans who recall their own onboard celebrations and milestone events.

Norwegian Cruise Line has formally welcomed its newest ship, Norwegian Luna, into service following a christening ceremony in Miami on 27th March 2026, marking a key milestone for the cruise line’s expanding fleet.
The event took place at the company’s Terminal B facility, a LEED Gold-certified building often referred to as the Pearl of Miami, and drew more than 2,000 invited guests. Attendees gathered to hear speeches from company leadership and to witness the long-standing maritime tradition of a ceremonial bottle being broken across the ship’s hull.
“Today’s christening of Norwegian Luna marks an important milestone for our Company and a moment of great pride for our entire team,” said John W. Chidsey, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.
A Unique Choice For Godmother
In a departure from the typical celebrity-led ceremonies often seen in the cruise industry, Norwegian Cruise Line selected internationally recognised street artist ELLE as the ship’s godmother.
Her role carried additional significance, as she also designed the vessel’s hull artwork. The piece, titled “La Luna,” presents a dreamlike interpretation of humanity’s connection to the moon, reflecting the ship’s name, which translates to “moon” in Spanish.
“Celebrating Norwegian Luna as the ship’s godmother is an incredible honor, and creating ‘La Luna’ has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career,” said ELLE.
Onboard Features And Entertainment
Constructed by Fincantieri at its shipyard in Marghera, Italy, the 156,000-gross ton Norwegian Luna represents the latest evolution of the line’s Prima Plus class, following the debut of Norwegian Aqua in 2025.
“Norwegian Luna represents the evolution of NCL – a brand built on freedom, flexibility and delivering experiences that resonate with every type of traveler,” said Marc Kazlauskas, President of Norwegian Cruise Line.
Among the ship’s headline attractions is the Aqua Slidecoaster, billed as the longest and fastest dual slides at sea, offering two distinct ride experiences.
Family-focused entertainment is further expanded with the introduction of Luna Midway, which combines carnival-style games with interactive attractions such as the Moon Climber obstacle course and Horizon Park, an outdoor space designed for lawn-style activities.
Dining options are extensive, with 17 venues serving 15 different types of cuisine, while entertainment includes productions such as “Elton: A Celebration of Elton John” and “HIKO: Innovation Meets Wonder,” blending acrobatics, multimedia and contemporary performance.
Additional late-night entertainment has also been introduced, including new programming at The Improv at Sea and an original show titled “LunaTique.”
Early Sailings And Deployment Plans
Although officially christened at the end of March, Norwegian Luna had already begun operations earlier in the month. Following delivery, the ship sailed from Europe to Miami on a transatlantic voyage, welcoming its first passengers in Rome on 10th March and Barcelona on 12th March.
The vessel has since completed a short Bahamas itinerary, departing Miami on 23rd March for a four-night cruise that included calls to Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay.
Its first official voyage after the christening ceremony is scheduled for 1st April 2026, with a three-night sailing to Great Stirrup Cay.
Looking ahead, Norwegian Luna will primarily operate seven-night Caribbean itineraries from Miami. In April 2027, the ship is set to reposition to New York, where it will begin offering seven-night cruises to Bermuda as part of its longer-term deployment.

A British couple have spoken out after being confined to their cabin for six days during a Northern Lights cruise, claiming they were wrongly diagnosed with a gastrointestinal illness despite showing no symptoms.
Speaking to The Mirror, Anne Parsons, 83, and her husband John, 75, explained how they spent £5,000 of their savings on a 10-day voyage aboard Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral, departing from Newcastle on 3rd March 2026.
Instead of enjoying their trip to Norway, the pair say they were isolated for much of the sailing due to what they insist were misdiagnosed conditions.
The couple, who travelled from Gloucestershire to join the cruise, found their holiday disrupted shortly after departure when Anne began feeling unwell after drinking alcohol that she says reacted badly with her medication. Despite her explanation, onboard staff determined she had gastroenteritis and ordered her into isolation.
Anne said she was instructed to remain in her cabin for three days, with no opportunity to leave. Documentation provided to the couple stated she had been diagnosed with gastrointestinal symptoms and was being confined due to “acute gastroenteritis”.
She maintains that no medical tests or examinations were carried out to confirm the diagnosis.
Isolation Extended After Second Incident
According to documents seen by the Mirror, Anne’s isolation lasted from the evening of 5th March until the afternoon of 7th March. However, just as she was due to be released, further complications arose.
The ship encountered rough weather, during which John became seasick after falling out of bed. Anne claims this was again misinterpreted by staff as gastroenteritis, leading to him also being placed in isolation.
John’s confinement lasted from the early hours of 7th March until the morning of 9th March. In total, the couple say they spent six days confined to their cabin, missing multiple planned excursions.
Anne described the experience as an “absolute disaster”, adding that daily announcements from the captain confirmed a growing number of illness cases onboard throughout the voyage.
The outbreak follows a similar incident earlier in 2026, when around 200 passengers reportedly fell ill during another Balmoral sailing in the Norwegian fjords.
Compensation Offer Rejected By Passengers
Following the trip, the couple were offered compensation in the form of a future cruise discount worth £179.90, described by the company as a gesture of goodwill for complying with isolation procedures.
However, Anne said the offer fell far short of addressing the disruption to their holiday and confirmed they have no intention of booking another cruise.
She also criticised what she described as dismissive behaviour from staff, claiming her attempts to explain the true cause of their symptoms were ignored.
In response, a spokesperson for Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said that passenger health and safety remain the company’s top priority. The cruise line stated that any guests displaying symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal illness are required to isolate as a precaution to prevent wider outbreaks.
The company added that affected passengers receive support during isolation, including medical assessments, welfare checks, and delivery of meals and essentials. It also confirmed that compensation is typically offered in the form of a future cruise voucher equivalent to 50 percent of the daily fare for time spent in isolation.
Ongoing Concerns Around Cruise Illness Protocols
The incident highlights ongoing concerns among passengers about how cruise lines handle illness outbreaks at sea, particularly when diagnoses are made quickly to limit transmission.
Strict isolation policies are standard practice across the cruise industry, especially in response to highly contagious conditions such as norovirus. However, cases like this may raise questions about how accurately symptoms are assessed and whether passengers are given adequate opportunity to challenge medical decisions.
For Anne and John Parsons, the experience has left a lasting impression, with the couple saying their long-awaited trip turned into a distressing ordeal they now wish they had never taken.

Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed that extensive upgrades to its private island, Great Stirrup Cay, will be fully operational by the end of 2026, as the line prepares guests booked on 2027 sailings for an enhanced experience.
The cruise line has invested at least $150 million into the Bahamian destination, with a wide range of new सुविधities and infrastructure designed to improve both access and time spent on the island. In a communication sent to future guests, the company said the upcoming visits will coincide with a “new chapter” for the destination as development work continues.
“As we continue to refine and expand Great Stirrup Cay, our focus remains on ensuring every guest can fully enjoy all that the island has to offer…Your upcoming visit coincides with an exciting new chapter for our private island,” the cruise line said.
Among the most anticipated additions is the Great Tides Waterpark, set to feature 19 slides, alongside a new two-ship pier that will eliminate the need for tender operations once completed.
Enhanced Experiences Across The Island
The development project also includes several amenities that have either recently opened or are nearing completion.
These include upgraded dining and bar venues, the Great Life Lagoon, a 1.4-acre pool area, and the Vibe Shore Club, an adults-only retreat offering premium seating and dedicated service.
The enhancements are expected to support a growing number of ship visits. A total of 15 vessels are scheduled to call at Great Stirrup Cay in both 2026 and 2027, including newer ships such as Norwegian Aqua, due in 2025, and Norwegian Luna, which is expected to join the fleet in 2026.
Beverage Package Decision Reversed
Norwegian Cruise Line has also used its latest guest communication to confirm that its Free at Sea beverage package will continue to be honoured on the island, following previous plans to remove the perk.
The decision to end drink package usage ashore had sparked significant backlash when it was announced, prompting the cruise line to reconsider. By March 2026, travel advisors had already been informed that the change was being paused indefinitely.
That position has now been reinforced for guests sailing in 2027.
“After receiving feedback from our guests and travel partners, guests with the Free at Sea or More at Sea beverage packages will continue to enjoy the same beverage package inclusions as they do on board. This means your beverage experience flows effortlessly from ship-to-shore,” the company confirmed.
Guests are still encouraged to purchase beverage packages before sailing, as onboard pricing is typically higher. Packages can be modified up to 24 hours before embarkation and may also be purchased during the first two days of a cruise.
Pier Completion Timeline And Temporary Disruption
A key component of the island’s transformation is the long-awaited permanent pier, which began construction in early 2025. Once finished, it will allow two ships to dock simultaneously, significantly improving accessibility and reducing the risk of missed calls due to weather.
“Our new two-ship pier, a significant enhancement designed to elevate arrival and improve access, will be in place for your visit, offering a smoother transition from ship-to-shore,” the cruise line said.
In the short term, however, guests may experience some disruption. While a temporary pier is currently in use, operations will revert to tendering from 1st April as construction progresses on the permanent structure. This phase is expected to last through to July or August before docking capability is fully restored.
Once complete, the new pier is expected to be one of the most impactful upgrades at Great Stirrup Cay, particularly for guests visiting during the busy 2027 season.

Miami-Dade transportation planners are exploring the possibility of a direct, non-stop rail connection between Miami International Airport and PortMiami, as part of long-term efforts to tackle worsening congestion in one of the world’s busiest cruise hubs.
The proposal stems from the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization’s 2050 Master Plan, published in September 2025, which assessed how improved public transport links could support the growing number of cruise passengers moving through the city.
With PortMiami handling millions of travellers each year, officials are under increasing pressure to find solutions to persistent traffic bottlenecks, particularly at weekends.
Often referred to as the Cruise Capital of the World, PortMiami currently operates 10 cruise terminals and serves more than 20 cruise lines. Passenger numbers continue to climb, creating significant strain on road infrastructure between the airport and the port.
Two Rail Options Under Consideration
Initial findings in the master plan outlined eight potential transport solutions, but that list has now been narrowed to two leading rail proposals.
The first option would involve a 9-mile extension of the existing MetroMover system, a free automated people mover that operates across 21 stations in Downtown Miami. This approach is considered the more straightforward of the two, as it could make use of existing infrastructure, including the Miami River Bridge.
However, there are concerns around its effectiveness. MetroMover trains have a relatively low capacity of around 50 passengers per car and operate at an average speed of just 9 miles per hour, raising questions about whether the system could handle peak cruise traffic.
The alternative proposal would extend the city’s Metrorail network by 10 miles. Currently spanning 25 miles, the expansion would increase the system to 35 miles and offer a significantly higher-capacity solution for passengers travelling between the airport and PortMiami.
That said, the Metrorail option would require more complex construction, including the development of a new bridge, making it the more expensive and technically demanding choice.
Both proposals carry a substantial financial commitment. Estimated capital costs range from $600 million to $800 million, with ongoing annual operating expenses projected at between $9 million and $15 million.
Rising Passenger Numbers Driving Urgency
The push for improved transport links comes as PortMiami continues to see record-breaking passenger volumes. In 2025 alone, the port welcomed more than 8.5 million cruise passengers, reinforcing its position as the busiest cruise port globally.
Looking ahead, projections from the MDTPO suggest that annual passenger numbers could climb dramatically, potentially reaching 24.1 million by 2050. This anticipated growth is expected to place even greater pressure on Miami’s already congested transport network.
Traffic challenges are not solely driven by cruise activity. Miami-Dade County is home to approximately 2.84 million residents, and factors such as major events, ongoing construction projects and multiple ships in port at once frequently contribute to gridlock in the downtown area.
Cruise lines have increasingly warned passengers to allow extra travel time when heading to the port. Earlier in March 2026, travellers sailing with Carnival Cruise Line were advised to plan ahead due to a particularly busy weekend influenced by construction works and a large local event.
While no timeline has yet been confirmed for either rail project, officials acknowledge that improvements will be essential to keep pace with demand. Until then, passengers departing from PortMiami are still being urged to allow plenty of time for their journey to the terminal.

A recent social media post asked if others felt pressured to give perfect ratings on a post-cruise survey. After all, knowing a crew member’s livelihood depends on this kind of thing gives the survey more weight. It didn’t take long for the group of veteran cruisers to give their takes.
That post-cruise survey email hits your inbox a day or two after you get home, and suddenly you’re staring at all those rating questions about dining, service, and your overall experience on board the ship.
For a lot of cruisers, it turns into more stress than it really should. The debate got started up on Reddit when one passenger in a Royal Caribbean subreddit asked this question:
“Anyone else feel a lot of pressure to give a perfect rating on the survey?”
They went on to explain: “The servers in the main dining room basically told us if they don’t get a perfect rating, they get punished. When it’s either a perfect rating or nothing, I just don’t leave a review or fill out a survey. What’s the point?”
While saying the crew members get “punished” for a lower rating is a bit extreme, it’s true that these surveys are a huge deal to the crew, even if some cruise travelers either ignore them or fill them out flippantly. After cruising for almost two decades, I realize how important these details are.
The social media post apparently hit home with a lot of other cruisers, and the comments poured in right away from fellow travelers who have wrestled with the same internal conflict.
The Pressure Many Cruisers Feel
A big sticking point for people is that specific survey question asking if anyone requested a perfect 10 or pushed you to fill it out.
It’s not uncommon for the crew to ask for a good rating even if they technically aren’t supposed to.
One commenter said what a lot of other cruisers have questioned about this:
“The question ‘did anyone request you to fill out the survey or request a perfect 10 (however it’s phrased)’ freaks me out because if I click yes, are they supposed to ask for those things or will they be punished for asking?”
It leaves you wondering what the “right” answer is without getting someone in trouble.
How Different Cruisers Handle the Ratings
Plenty of people decide to give 10s most of the time as a way to support the crew. One cruiser shared this way of thinking:
“No pressure, but unless something was truly awful, I always do a perfect score and name everyone I can. It means a lot to them, and there is zero reason for me to give a crummy score.”
But not everyone feels comfortable with that. Some people want to stay honest and realize that if the cruise line really wants constructive feedback maybe some positive changes can come from it.
“Be honest. Rate honestly and answer yes to the ‘did anyone ask you to give a 10’ question. Why is that so hard? People need to be honest or nothing will change,” one comment stated.
Worries About What Perfect Scores Really Do
On the flip side, a few people pointed out a downside to handing out 10s every time. One Diamond member said:
“And that’s why the quality keeps dropping. As long as the 10’s keep on coming in head office thinks all is great maybe we can cut back some more.”
Another person explained how the scoring system works in reality, which can be a lot different than some think:
“9-10 is a 100, 6-8 is a 0, 0-5 is -100… anything less than perfect can really hurt them.”
It creates some confusion because you want to be nice to the crew but also wonder if your feedback is actually helping the cruise line improve.
In my experience, if a crew member is not offering good service, they typically won’t even bring up the survey. Not that they should. But this kind of extra effort usually is paired with good service on the ship as well.
Then again, your mileage may vary.
Why Crew Members Bring Up the Survey
Crew members are usually away from home for many months at a stretch, working hard to take care of guests and support their families back home.
It’s not an easy life and I can honestly say that I’ve had incredible crew members on just about every cruise I’ve taken.
Whether it was the extra time a room steward took to make extra towel animals for a child or a waiter remembering how I like my steak cooked, all those details add up to a better cruise vacation.
A strong survey can mean bonuses, extra days off, or better chances when contracts come up again.
That’s why some of them mention how important those perfect scores are before the cruise ends.
The good news is that cruise lines do pay attention to the surveys. When you name specific crew members and say what they did well, those comments often get passed along to their supervisors and can lead to real recognition.
Practical Tips for Filling Out the Survey
Here’s what a lot of experienced cruisers do to keep things fair:
Give the 10 if the service felt solid and you had a good experience. Most people in comments of this social media post lean this way unless something was clearly off.
Use the comment boxes to name names and give specific praise. Telling exactly what your waiter or room steward did well can mean more than the number itself.
Put bigger picture issues (like food trends or staffing) in the general sections instead of putting that on an individual crew member. It’s not the crew member’s fault if the food selection at the buffet wasn’t to your liking or the bed was too hard.
Skip the whole survey if it just doesn’t feel right. Plenty of people in the discussion do exactly that and move on.
The most polarizing part of the survey is usually the “were you asked” question. Some prefer to be 100% honest about it and others are afraid of hurting the crew members. It’s your call, but since these surveys are all about transparency, every bit of feedback can help make future cruises better for everyone.
Personally, I tend to give out perfect 10’s on a regular basis, but I also use the comment sections for critiques and added context for anything that was a tad off.
