A new cruise ship terminal is coming to the Port of Los Angeles. One of Magic Johnson’s companies, JLC Infrastructure, has partnered with Carrix Inc., to develop and operate the Outer Harbor Cruise Terminal at the Port of Los Angeles.
The new cruise terminal will be built to accommodate the newest and most environmentally sustainable cruise ships arriving in Los Angeles. In addition, the World Cruise Terminal at the port will be redeveloped.
Carrix has a long track record in collaborating to develop large-scale infrastructure projects while enjoying a deep-rooted history in Southern California across containerized cargo and cruise ship terminal operations.
Every cruise ship that visits the Port of Los Angeles generates approximately $1.3 million in local economic activity.
Port Executive Director Gene Seroka, gave the following statement:
“This new Outer Harbor cruise terminal and World Cruise Center redevelopment will allow us to capture more of the rapidly growing cruise business, while also establishing Los Angeles as the primary West Coast gateway for cruise operations.
This project will also be a huge win for our Port communities, who will greatly benefit from the economic activity generated by such significant public and private investment in our LA Waterfront.”
Marlon Smith, managing director at JLC, added:
“We are excited about this opportunity to partner with Carrix and the Port of Los Angeles. This project supports our strategy to invest in critical infrastructure that contributes to the growth of the surrounding communities.
“Los Angeles is a strategic location to support in creasing demand for Pacific Coast cruise operations. We expect that the incremental tourism generated from cruise operations and there imagined waterfront will produce meaningful benefit to the Port, local business, and the community as a whole.”

A last-minute itinerary change is rarely welcomed by cruise guests, but for passengers sailing aboard Norwegian Encore in January, the alteration delivered a historic first for Norwegian Cruise Line.
The Breakaway Plus-class ship departed Miami on 17th January 2026 for a seven-night Caribbean and Bahamas cruise that had originally been scheduled to call at Roatan in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, Costa Maya in Mexico and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas.
However, shortly before arrival, the planned call to Costa Maya on 21st January was cancelled due to changes in port availability.
The adjustment was widely linked to ongoing construction at Costa Maya, where Royal Caribbean has been redeveloping the port into its upcoming Perfect Day Mexico destination, expected to open in autumn 2027.
Although Royal Caribbean took ownership of the port in summer 2025 and committed to keeping it open to all cruise lines, construction activity appeared to temporarily limit access.
An Historic Overnight At Great Stirrup Cay
Rather than a straightforward replacement port, Norwegian Cruise Line opted to introduce something entirely new. In place of Costa Maya, Norwegian Encore became the first ship in the fleet to offer an overnight stay at Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas.
Up to 3,958 guests onboard were informed that they would be part of a first-of-its-kind experience for the brand.
In a message sent to passengers during the voyage, Norwegian Cruise Line wrote: “We’re thrilled to introduce an extraordinary, first-of-its-kind experience, an overnight stay at our private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay. This will mark the first overnight visit offered to Norwegian Cruise Line guests.”
The cruise line added: “This moment gives you the rare opportunity to be among the first guests to experience Great Stirrup Cay after dark, truly making cruise history.”
Instead of arriving on the morning of 23rd January as originally planned, Norwegian Encore docked at the island’s newly completed pier at 4pm on 22nd January.
Guests were able to enjoy the island until midnight, including a Glow Party held under the stars between 9pm and 11pm. The following day, the island reopened to passengers until the ship departed at 5pm, effectively giving guests parts of two days ashore.
Slight Adjustment At Harvest Caye
To make the overnight call possible, a minor change was also made earlier in the itinerary. The visit to Harvest Caye, Norwegian Cruise Line’s private destination in Belize, was shortened.
Norwegian Cruise Line advised guests: “We’ve adjusted the timing of our visit to Harvest Caye, Belize to better align with port logistics.”
Instead of an original schedule of 8am to 6pm, Norwegian Encore called at Harvest Caye from 7am until 3pm on 20th January.
While this resulted in roughly two fewer hours ashore, the revised timing allowed the ship additional sailing time to comfortably cover the approximately 1,400 nautical miles between Belize and the Bahamas.
Positive Reaction From Guests And Cruise Fans
Reaction to the changes was overwhelmingly positive, both from guests onboard and from cruise fans following the voyage on social media. Many welcomed the reduced pressure of an overnight stay, noting that it removed the usual concerns about getting back to the ship on time.
Others were simply pleased to spend more time at Great Stirrup Cay, with some expressing little disappointment over missing Costa Maya altogether. The prospect of a beach party in the evening also proved popular, particularly among guests who enjoy the island atmosphere after sunset.
Looking ahead, the successful overnight stay could influence future itineraries. Norwegian Cruise Line has invested around $150 million in recent and upcoming enhancements at Great Stirrup Cay, including the new Great Life Lagoon pool area and the forthcoming Great Tides Waterpark.
If guest feedback remains strong, overnight visits may become another feature added to the private island experience in the years to come.

Cruise passengers on NCL’s Norwegian Encore were just able to enjoy something rare: an overnight stay at the cruise line’s private island at Great Stirrup Cay.
Although it was a change in the schedule that led to this extra day in port, passengers were happy to get some extra time at Norwegian Cruise Line’s private destination.
There’s nothing like an overnight stay at a cruise line’s private island. There’s no rush to get back to the ship and passengers can enjoy back-to-back beach days without all the fuss.
Historically, MSC Cruises has been the only cruise line to offer regular overnight stays at its private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. But thanks to an unexpected port cancellation, Norwegian Cruise Line just gave passengers something they may want again in the future.
A First for Norwegian Cruise Line
When Norwegian Encore left PortMiami on January 17, 2026, the original plan included a stop at Costa Maya, Mexico. But NCL informed guests through a letter (posted online) that “circumstances beyond [their] control” forced the ship to skip the Mexican port.
In a letter delivered to cabins, the cruise line said the following:
“We’re thrilled to introduce an extraordinary, first-of-its-kind experience, an overnight stay at our private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay. This will mark the first overnight visit offered to Norwegian Cruise Line guests.”
The letter went on to tell passengers that the change gave them the “rare opportunity to be among the first guests to experience Great Stirrup Cay after dark.”
The Medical Emergency
According to guests on social media, the ship had to return to Miami for a critical medical emergency involving a passenger on life support.
One passenger shared that “it took almost an hour for an ambulance to show up” once the ship arrived back in Miami. The ship eventually made its way back to the Bahamas, docking at Great Stirrup Cay just before 7:00 PM on January 22.
The Costa Maya Swap
The decision to swap a destination like Costa Maya (which some affectionately called “Costa Maybe”) for an extra day at a private island gave cruisers a lot to talk about online. Most saw the change as a big upgrade to the itinerary.
“Costa Maya is literally the worst stop in NCL’s repertoire,” one passenger said. Another cruiser called the overnight stay a “great change” and said that “any overnight, especially in their private island, is a win.”
Some said they would miss the cultural experience of Costa Maya, but it seemed that the overall majority welcomed the change.
The Great Tides Waterpark is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026
Under the Stars
Even though the ship arrived late, the cruise line kept its promise in the letter that “as the sun sets, the energy shifts to an unforgettable evening celebration.”
Passengers enjoyed a Glow Party under the stars from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the new Great Life Lagoon on the island instead of on the ship. This new area has a massive pool with swim-up bars, cabanas, and plush lounge chairs.
According to reports from passengers, guests were allowed to stay on the island for the Glow Party but were given until midnight to be back on the ship. Also, during this time beach access was restricted due to safety concerns.
Today is the second day for passengers to enjoy the island and they have until 5:00 PM to be back on the ship.
A Glimpse into the Future?
While this first-ever overnight stay on Great Stirrup Cay was a solution to a schedule issue, some could argue it served as a “proof of concept” for NCL. And with the new pier finally finished and making nighttime access easy, we will keep our ears to the ground to see if the cruise line will offer overnight stays again in the future.
Norwegian Encore is currently still docked at Great Stirrup Cay and is scheduled to arrive back in PortMiami on January 24 as she prepared for another 7-day Caribbean sailing.

Amsterdam is considering a complete ban on ocean-going cruise ships by 2035, marking a significant escalation in its efforts to curb pollution and overtourism in the Dutch capital.
Just over six months after announcing plans to halve cruise ship visits from 2026 and relocate the city’s passenger terminal away from the historic centre, the city’s coalition government is now backing a far tougher approach.
Rather than moving the terminal east of the city by 2035, officials are proposing to phase out all seagoing cruise vessels entirely.
If approved, Amsterdam would become the first major city in Europe to prohibit ocean cruise ships outright, instead of introducing stricter limits on ship size, passenger numbers, or docking locations.
River cruise ships would still be allowed to visit, but under tighter controls. The proposal caps river vessel calls at 1,150 per year, roughly half the number recorded in recent years.
Environmental and Overtourism Concerns Drive Proposal
City leaders argue that removing ocean cruise ships would deliver the most meaningful environmental benefits for Amsterdam.
Phasing out these vessels would most efficiently deliver the desired “clear sustainability and environmental gains” for the city, Alderman Hester van Buren stated.
Political support within the coalition has been vocal. “We are finally going to free Amsterdam from these floating apartment blocks. They pollute our air, are bad for the climate, bring hordes of tourists into our city, and block a bridge over the IJ,” Party Leader Rob Hofland said.
Air quality concerns have been a long-running issue in the port area, with debates intensifying as early as 2023. Cruise tourism has also become a focal point in wider discussions around overtourism in the city centre.
Amsterdam would join a growing list of European destinations tightening restrictions on cruise ships, including cities in Spain, France and Greece. However, while ports such as Barcelona, Nice and Santorini have imposed limitations or caps, Amsterdam’s plan goes further by targeting a full ban on seagoing vessels.
Cost Of Relocation Plays Key Role
Financial considerations appear to be a major factor behind the shift in strategy.
According to van Buren, relocating the existing cruise terminal would cost more than €85 million, an investment she is not convinced the city would recover over time. By contrast, banning cruise ships altogether is projected to cost Amsterdam’s economy around €46 million across the next 30 years.
To offset those losses, the alderman has outlined plans to redevelop areas currently linked to cruise operations.
This includes further development of the Veemkade, a waterfront district already known for dining, events and housing, as well as repurposing parts of the Coenhaven in the western harbour area of the Port of Amsterdam.
Decision Still Years Away
Despite the strong language, the proposal is far from final.
Details will be refined over the coming months before being passed to the next coalition government, which will take office following local elections in March 2026. The newly elected administration will then decide whether to move the plan forward to the City Council.
There is currently no timeline for a final decision, and the proposal could still be amended significantly or abandoned altogether.
For cruise passengers, any impact would be long-term rather than immediate. With 2035 still almost a decade away, current itineraries are unlikely to change. Cruise lines typically finalise schedules several years in advance, and future planning would simply avoid Amsterdam if a ban is confirmed.
Instead, cruise operators could turn to nearby ports such as Rotterdam, located around 45 miles away and already recognised as Europe’s largest seaport. Its proximity would allow many popular shore excursions traditionally linked to Amsterdam to remain viable for guests sailing into the region.

Carnival Cruise Line just dropped some big news for the 2027/2028 season for Carnival Sunshine. The sailings will include first-ever visits to ports in Africa in addition to stops in Italy, France, Spain, and Montenegro.
Carnival Sunshine
The newly announced itineraries for Carnival Sunshine represent the first time the cruise line has added African ports into the primary schedule, even though the cruise line has visited some ports in Africa before during repositioning voyages.
Starting in the summer of 2027, Carnival Sunshine will move from the United States to Europe and will offer itineraries never offered by Carnival before.
North Africa
One of the highlights of the new schedule for the 3,000-passenger ship is the addition of Tangier, Morocco, and La Goulette (Tunis), Tunisia in Northern Africa.
This shows that Carnival is branching out and offering more destination-focused options for a fanbase that is growing every year. You can look at it as an extension of the Carnival Journeys program that offers special sailings that are also destination-focused.
The ship will offer sailings all around the Mediterranean from May through October 2027 while homeporting in Barcelona, Spain, and Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy. Voyages will be a mix of 7-day and longer cruises.
Along with the visits to African ports, the ship will visit new European ports as well, including Bari, Italy; Bar, Montenegro; and Ajaccio (Corsica), France.
Solar Eclipse Cruise
Carnival is also using the appropriately named “Sunshine” ship for a solar eclipse cruise in 2027. On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will track across the Mediterranean and North Africa.
The ship’s July 25 sailing from Barcelona is specifically designed to put passengers in the “path of totality” during the eclipse. While other ships in the fleet, like Carnival Miracle, will also offer views of the eclipse, Sunshine’s position in the Mediterranean is expected to offer some of the longest viewing durations and clearest skies available for the event.
Timeline for Sunshine
The 2027 season involves a series of “transitional” sailings as the ship moves across the Atlantic:
Eastbound Transatlantic: Departs Norfolk, VA, on May 15, 2027, for a 15-day sailing to Dover, England.
The Mediterranean Season: A series of 15 sailings from May 30 through October 2027, covering Italy, Spain, Turkey, and North Africa.
Westbound Transatlantic: Departs Barcelona in late October 2027 for PortMiami, featuring a final stop in Tangier, Morocco, before crossing back to the U.S.
Going to Texas
Following its time in Europe and Africa, Carnival Sunshine will not return to its previous East Coast ports. Instead, it will head to Galveston, Texas, arriving in November 2027.
This move replaces previous plans for Carnival Spirit to homeport there, with Carnival mentioning high demand in the Texas market as the reason for sending the larger, 102,000 gross ton, Carnival Sunshine.

Cruise Fever is always reminding cruise travelers to arrive early. There’s nothing worse than the stress of trying to make it to the ship when a flight is delayed or there is traffic on the road.
As a rule of thumb, arriving at least the day before “sail away day” can keep most problems from derailing a cruise vacation.
But for one Canadian family, a recent attempt to save time and money on a cruise out of New York turned into a multi-thousand-dollar headache. One member of the family took to Reddit to warn others to “Always. Leave. The. Day. Before”.
After just a few hours of being posted on Reddit, the social media page had already racked up over 250 comments from both sympathetic and wisdom-giving readers.
The original poster shared how the 7-hour drive from Canada to the Brooklyn seemed manageable enough to leave the day of the cruise. Unfortunately, this was not the case.
The Breakdown
The family planned to board MSC Meraviglia with a 1:00 PM boarding time. They hit the road at 5:30 AM on a Sunday, leaving them a narrow window for making it to the ship on time.
And just two hours into the trip, the family truck suffered an engine failure on the highway.
Thinking back on the decision to drive down the morning of the cruise, the cruiser stated it was a “Big mistake.”
“No dealerships were open nearby because it was a Sunday, so we basically had to abandon the truck in another country. We rented a car and had to drive home (we wouldn’t have made it to New York in time).” the user shared.
“We missed the cruise… we also got no refunds for the cruise (or excursions) and our travel insurance did not cover anything.”
The loss was just as much personal as it was financial as the would-be-cruise-passenger stated, “I was also supposed to have my birthday on that cruise”.
MSC Meraviglia docked at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. (Photo Courtesy of MSC Cruises)
Why the ‘Day Of’ Strategy is a Gamble
The Reddit thread was filled with veteran cruisers reinforcing the posters message. What was the consensus? If you aren’t at the port city at least 24 hours before the gangway goes up, you’re playing roulette with your vacation.
“People laugh at me for arriving at the airport hours early, but I’d rather be sitting in an airport bar than waiting for AAA and missing my vacation,” wrote one user.
Another commenter pointed out the hidden benefit of arriving early: “If you get in the night before you get a good night’s sleep and a pleasant breakfast instead of staggering onto the ship after you’ve driven cross country.”
I find that I sleep a lot better the night before the cruise when I know I’m only a short taxi or Uber ride from the port. Sure, you can have travel insurance to soften the blow, but you still miss out on a cruise.
And if you have Cruise Fever like we have it, that’s the worst part.
The Logistics
Many comments questioned why the family couldn’t simply catch up with the ship at the next stop. But the reality of maritime law and cruise line policy is pretty clear.
When the family asked to meet the ship at the first port, the cruise line refused, citing legal reasons.
“We called MSC and asked if we could meet them at the first port and board the ship, they said no. Apparently it’s illegal,” the user stated.
While sometimes these requests are granted depending on the itinerary and specific port regulations, it is never a guarantee and often involves expensive, last-minute international travel.
Lessons Learned
The quality of your cruise travel insurance also matters as much as your arrival time. While the original family’s plan didn’t work out, other cruisers noted that the fine print makes the difference.
Many in the comments said they now rely on certain credit cards for protection or specialized companies like Allianz to make sure they are covered for car breakdowns or medical emergencies.
Really, the goal is to give yourself extra time for the “what-ifs.”
You might get lucky a dozen times by showing up on the day of the cruise departure, but it only takes one instance to change your whole view of the “show up early” philosophy.
The original poster says they will never take the risk again, stating that this experience changed how they travel forever.
So, learn from this cruiser’s mistake instead of making it yourself. It’s a lot cheaper that way.

Oceania Cruises is debuting a new ship in a new class in 2027. And after an announcement from the cruise line this morning, we now know where Oceania Sonata will be sailing during her inaugural season.
The Launch Schedule
Oceania Sonata officially enters service on August 7, 2027. While the ship is still under construction, Oceania Cruises is giving us a peek at the sailings she will offer and when bookings will be made available.
Bookings will open on January 28, 2026. The inaugural season will run from August 2027 through April 2028.
The screenshot below gives a glimpse at some of the sailings that will be available next week.
Where Oceania Sonata Will Sail

Dining remains a big focus of the ship’s design. About half of the crew is dedicated to culinary operations, maintaining a ratio of one chef for every eight guests.
New Venues:La Table (an 18-seat French fine-dining experience) and Nikkei Kitchen (Japanese-Peruvian fusion).
Standard Features: Total of 13 dining venues, all included in the cruise fare.
The Suite Experience
The ship will also feature a higher percentage of suites than any previous Oceania ship (33% of all rooms).
New Categories: The “Horizon Suite” (600+ sq. ft.) and “Penthouse Deluxe Suite.”
Owner’s Suites: For the first time, these top-tier suites will feature two full bedrooms.
Service: Every suite category includes dedicated butler service.

Severe weather from Cyclone Harry has caused major disruption for cruise operations in the Mediterranean, forcing itinerary changes, port cancellations and extended stays in port for ships from both MSC Cruises and Silversea Cruises.
The powerful storm system, which intensified across the Central Mediterranean from 19th January 2026, brought gale to hurricane-force winds, towering swells and widespread coastal flooding, prompting authorities in Italy and Malta to issue their highest weather warnings and leaving cruise lines with little choice but to prioritise safety.
MSC World Europa Loses Two Ports And Alters Turnaround Plans
The 215,863-gross-ton MSC World Europa was forced to cancel consecutive port calls to Messina, Sicily, on 20th January and Valletta, Malta, on 21st January after forecasts showed deteriorating conditions along the planned route.
Up to 6,762 guests onboard the LNG-powered flagship were first advised on 16th January that changes were likely, before the revised itinerary was formally confirmed the following day.
“Current forecasts indicate the development of a strong weather system bringing very rough seas, heavy swells, and strong to gale-force winds.
“These conditions may be encountered during our approach to the Messina Strait and are expected to intensify further during the subsequent navigation toward La Valletta,”
Letter sent to guests
Instead of Messina, the ship called at Naples on 20th January, around 305 miles from the original destination, before proceeding to Palermo on 21st January as an alternative gateway to Sicily.
The cancellations also complicated embarkation and debarkation operations, as Messina is a regular turnaround port for the ship alongside Barcelona, Marseille, Rome and Genoa. Guests due to board in Messina on 20th January were offered complimentary shuttle transfers to Naples, along with a €25 per-person onboard credit to cover lunch ashore.
Alternatively, passengers could embark in Palermo on 21st January and receive a pro-rated refund for the missed night onboard. MSC Cruises also confirmed assistance would be provided to guests affected by the change in disembarkation port, though details were not specified.
“We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Please rest assured that we will continue to keep you updated as the situation evolves,” the cruise line emphasised.
Silversea’s Silver Muse Shelters In Malta As Storm Peaks
Cyclone Harry also forced Silversea Cruises to dramatically adjust plans for the 40,791-gross-ton Silver Muse, which opted to remain in Valletta, Malta, to ride out the worst of the storm.
The 632-guest luxury ship was originally scheduled to overnight in Valletta from 18th to 19th January, but the stay was extended until the morning of 20th January, and later effectively prolonged again as conditions failed to improve.
“Our chief Meteorologist, Craig Setzer, and I have been closely tracking the strong low-pressure system affecting the region that is expected to bring strong winds and high seas along our planned route to Tunisia,
“With the forecast showing no improvement, we will be extending our stay in Valletta until tomorrow morning, departing at roughly 7 a.m.”
Captain Kosta Doroshenko’s letter to guests.
Cruise tracking data showed Silver Muse still alongside in Valletta as of 4 am on 21st January, with swells of around 4.7 metres continuing to roll through the harbour.
As a result, the scheduled call to La Goulette-Tunis on 20th January was cancelled, and the subsequent visit to Cagliari, Sardinia, on 21st January also became unfeasible.
Despite the delays, Silversea confirmed the ship still expects to arrive in Valencia, Spain, at 8 am on 23rd January, maintaining the planned end of the 20-night voyage.
“We still expect to arrive in Valencia as scheduled on Friday morning,” the Royal Caribbean-owned brand confirmed.
The sailing began in Lisbon on 4th January 2026 and is due to conclude with disembarkation in Barcelona on 24th January.
Passengers onboard Silver Muse were offered a future cruise credit valued at the prorated two-day cruise fare covering the missed ports, despite standard cruise contract terms not requiring compensation for weather-related changes.
“We fully recognize the impact these weather-related changes have on your journey,” the cruise line stated.
“To thank you for your understanding, you will receive a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) valued at the prorated 2-days cruise fare paid.”
The credit will be issued within 20 business days of disembarkation and must be used within two years.
Mediterranean Regions Hit By Rare And Dangerous Storm
Cyclone Harry has been described as an extremely aggressive low-pressure system, with wind speeds exceeding 74 miles per hour in some areas and swells reaching up to nine metres. Italy’s Civil Protection Department issued red alerts, its most severe warning, across Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria, leading to evacuations and widespread disruption.

Malta also endured red-level warnings on 19th January as intense rain, coastal flooding and winds of up to 55 knots battered the island. Civil Protection Malta reported dozens of emergency responses in the first 30 hours, including fallen trees, debris clearance, electrical hazards and HAZMAT incidents.
By early 21st January, Italy had downgraded its alerts to orange advisories, indicating improving but still dangerous conditions. Weather in Valletta has since eased to cloudy conditions with scattered showers, while La Goulette in Tunisia is experiencing only light rain.
While both MSC World Europa and Silver Muse are built to handle rough seas, the scale and intensity of Cyclone Harry has underscored how extreme Mediterranean winter weather can still bring cruise itineraries to a standstill when safety is at stake.
