Why I Use Shore Excursions Group

Shore Excursions Group has become my go-to for cruise excursions because they consistently offer better value, more flexibility, and a more authentic feel than the cruise line options.

Why Everyone’s Talking About Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class

Think you’ve seen it all when it comes to cruise ships? Think again. Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class has flipped the script – bigger, bolder, and bursting with firsts you won’t find anywhere else at sea. It started with Icon of the Seas, a ship that’s less “floating hotel” and more “floating city of thrills”.

Aerial shot of Icon of the Seas sailing at night

Not sure what makes Icon Class so different? You’re about to find out. From jaw-dropping features to upcoming ships and how they stack up against the rest of the fleet—here’s everything you need to know.

It All Started With Icon Of The Seas

Icon of the Seas is the first of the new Icon Class of ships sailing for Royal Caribbean.

Originally announced in 2016, the ship and class debuted in 2024 as the largest in the world. Since this time, another three Icon Class ships have been announced. Star of the Seas – debuting in August 2025, Legend of the Seas – debuting in 2026 and a fourth, as yet unnamed ship is now set for delivery in 2027.

There are a lot of firsts debuting on Icon of the Seas, but it also takes a lot of what makes the Oasis Class ships amazing and enhances them. The result is a class of ship that isn’t just big, but that offers an incredible experience on board for the whole family.

Aerial shot of Icon of the Seas sailing at night

Icon Class Is 5% Bigger Than Oasis Class

Icon of the Seas is the biggest ship in the world, taking that title from Wonder of the Seas, which is the largest of the Oasis-class ships.

You can read more about how the two classes of ship differ in this post: Icon Class Vs Oasis Class.

Ever since the Freedom of the Seas first debuted as the first Freedom-class ship for Royal Caribbean, the cruise line has held the title of the biggest cruise ship in the world. The title has simply passed from ship to ship within the Royal Caribbean fleet since then.

Oasis of the Seas became the biggest ship in the world when she launched in 2009, but she was surpassed by her sister ships Harmony of the Seas (2016), Symphony of the Seas (2018) and then Wonder of the Seas (2022), with marginal size increases every time.

Icon of the Seas is significantly larger again, around 5% bigger in terms of gross tonnage compared to Wonder of the Seas. It can host 600 more passengers, and it has an additional 2 decks.

When the Icon-class ships were first announced in 2016, it wasn’t expected that they would be bigger than the Oasis-class ships – the forecast was for the ships to be around 200,000 GT, so around 10% smaller than the Oasis Class.

But that later changed, and in 2022 it was confirmed that each Icon Class cruise ship would be the biggest in the world, starting with Icon of the Seas in 2024 and followed by two more ships in 2025 and 2026 – Star of the Seas and Legend of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean Says The Icon Class Is The Best

The Icon Class ships are being defined by Royal Caribbean as ‘the best of every vacation’. The ship is seen as combining everything you love about a beach retreat, a feature-packed resort hotel and a full-on theme park.

The Oasis Class was always seen as being defined as the “biggest and best”, while the Quantum Class was launched with a focus on innovation and technology.

With Icon, the size is important, but it’s not the defining factor – it’s how it brings together the best of everything and debuts some exciting new features, in one epic ship.

History Of The Royal Caribbean Icon Class

The Icon Class was announced in October 2016, when it was initially given the name ‘Project Icon’. Around the same time, the name ‘Icon of the Seas’ was trademarked by the cruise line, showing that the name has never been in doubt.

Originally, two ships were ordered, but an order for a third was announced in July 2019 and a fourth in August 2024.

Ships In The Icon Class

There are currently at least four ships planned for the Icon Class. The first Icon-class cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, debuted in early 2024, while Star of the Seas will set sail in summer 2025. The third ship, Legend of the Seas, is expected for 2026, and the fourth, yet unnamed ship, will arrive in 2027. The cruise line also has space reserved at the shipyard if it wants to go ahead with a fifth and sixth ship.

Features Of The Icon Class

There are several features that help to define Icon Class as the best of every vacation.

Accommodation

Several new accommodation types debuted on Icon of the Seas, including the first three-storey suite for the fleet – the Ultimate Family Townhouse. Other new suites include the Surfside Family Suite, with alcoves that younger kids can enjoy and great access to the waterparks.

It’s not just Icon’s suites that have been revamped – there’s a new Inside Plus category, which adds a large dividing wall between the room and the bathroom. And even crew cabins have been redesigned with crew input, so guests and crew can sleep more easily.

Adults-Only Features

Icon of the Seas may be a colourful ship packed with family-friendly attractions, but there’s plenty for adults to enjoy too, including various bars and lounges – including the first frozen cocktail bar at sea, and the first swim-up bar on a cruise ship.

The Hideaway is a relaxing area designed for adults, with the first suspended infinity pool at sea and a multilevel sea terrace with whirlpools. There are a lot of firsts on this ship, and not all are just for the kids.

Attractions

Various attractions are either being introduced or improved for the Icon Class, including the water slides – there are now 6, and each one of them breaks new ground in some way, including the first open free-fall slide, the tallest drop slide, and the first mat-racing duo slides.

There’s an improved AquaTheater too, along with the largest ice skating rink on a Royal Caribbean ship. Plus, the brand new Crown’s Edge combines a skywalk, a ropes course and a thrill ride and sees guests swing out over the ocean from 154 feet above the sea.

Fuel

The Icon Class is the first for Royal Caribbean to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Other cruise lines have got there first, but Royal Caribbean is now building ships designed to use this fuel, which burns much cleaner than traditional diesel.

Coupled with Royal Caribbean’s existing technologies, this makes the Icon Class the most sustainable of the Royal Caribbean fleet.

Beloved Cruise Captain Dies Overnight On Asia Cruise

In a heart-breaking turn of events during an overnight call in Keelung, Taiwan, passengers aboard Diamond Princess awoke in the early hours of May 19, 2025, to the sound of a medical emergency being announced over the ship’s loudspeaker.

Captain Michele Bartolomei

By morning, that distress call was revealed to be for none other than the ship’s captain, Michele Bartolomei.

Despite efforts to assist, the long-time Princess Cruises captain passed away suddenly from a medical emergency onboard.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei, who died onboard Diamond Princess earlier of a sudden medical emergency,” Princess Cruises confirmed in a letter to guests.

A Sudden Loss at Sea

The call for medical assistance was made around 2:30 a.m. local time, and a second announcement was delivered as passengers prepared to disembark for their scheduled excursions later that morning.

At the time, Diamond Princess was docked in Keelung, Taiwan, and not in need of emergency assistance at sea.

The vessel had departed Yokohama, Japan, on 16th May for a 9-night cruise, with port calls to Ishigaki and Naha still to come before returning on 25th May.

Following Captain Bartolomei’s untimely death, Staff Captain Salvatore Macera – himself a seasoned officer with the cruise line since 2000 – assumed command of the ship.

“Please be assured that our commitment to your safety and the smooth operation of this voyage remains our utmost priority,” Princess Cruises said in a statement to guests.

A Distinguished Career Remembered

Captain Michele Bartolomei was just shy of his 30th anniversary with Princess Cruises, having joined the company in 1995.

Born in Italy and later residing in British Columbia, Canada, he began his maritime career as a cadet on a coal cargo ship before transitioning to cruise ships.

An avid fisherman, Captain Bartolomei kept a fishing boat in the Pacific Northwest and spent 18 seasons sailing Alaska’s Inside Passage.

In more recent years, he had grown fond of deployments in Asia and Australia.

Captain Macera honoured his colleague, calling him “a respected leader, whose decades of service at sea exemplified professionalism, dedication, and care for both guests and crew.”

Tributes from current and former guests, crew members, and industry colleagues quickly poured in across social media, where many remembered him not only as a skilled mariner but also a warm and approachable leader.

Several shared photos taken with the captain during their voyages.

Princess Cruises offered their deepest condolences: “Our hearts are with Captain Bartolomei’s family during this incredibly difficult time, and we extend our deepest condolences to them. We also stand in support of the entire Diamond Princess crew and all employees across our company who had the honor of working alongside him.”

Captain Bartolomei was just 52 years old.

His passing comes nearly one year after the death of Royal Caribbean’s Captain James MacDonald aboard Harmony of the Seas in a similarly tragic and unexpected incident.

For guests aboard Diamond Princess, the cruise continues – but with heavy hearts as they remember a captain who truly lived and loved life at sea.

Carnival “Spider-Man” Climber Charged After Dangerous Stunt in Sydney

A 29-year-old man scaled the mooring ropes of Carnival Adventure and now faces three criminal charges and a court date in June.

After turning heads and sparking viral videos with a reckless act that saw him scaling the mooring lines of Carnival Adventure at Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal on 17th May 2025, the man behind the stunt is now facing serious legal repercussions.

Dubbed “Spider-Man” on social media, the 29-year-old was seen dangerously clambering up the thick ropes tethering the 108,865-gross-ton ship to the dock. Videos of the incident quickly spread across social media.

The stunt halted port activity and quickly drew the attention of New South Wales police, who coordinated with the ship’s crew to safely lower the ropes toward a police boat.

Officers then took the man into custody without incident.

Carnival enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy when it comes to behaviours that endanger passengers, crew, or the ship itself.

Depending on the court’s ruling, the climber could face significant penalties, including imprisonment, house arrest, or fines.

The spectacle may have looked daring to some, but authorities and cruise experts stress that such stunts can easily turn fatal.

Had the man lost his grip, he could have fallen between the ship and the dock, risking serious injury, drowning, or being crushed. There have already been real-world examples of such tragedies in recent months:

In April 2025, a child accidentally fell between a Royal Caribbean ship and the pier at Perfect Day at CocoCay. Thankfully, they were rescued.

On December 26, 2024, an elderly guest fell from their motorized wheelchair into the water at St. Maarten and tragically passed away.

Moreover, the man climbed the ship’s mooring lines – crucial equipment designed to hold the ship in place.

While built to withstand extreme forces, they are not meant to support human weight. Had one snapped under tension, it could have caused serious injury or death, not just to the climber but to anyone nearby.

This incident ended without physical harm, but authorities are using it as a powerful reminder: actions like these have real-world consequences. Beyond the legal ramifications, the safety risks to the individual, crew, and vessel were enormous.

Cruise ports, terminals, and ships are secure maritime zones, and breaches are not treated lightly. As cruising continues to grow in popularity, law enforcement and cruise lines alike are making it clear – unauthorized access and reckless behaviour won’t be tolerated.

Let this serve as a warning to thrill-seekers: the ocean is no playground, and cruise security is no joke.

47 Songs Every Cruiser Should Have On Their Playlist

The moment that cruise countdown starts, you need a playlist to match the vibe. Whether you’re dreaming of sea days from your sofa or already sipping cocktails by the pool, the right soundtrack sets the tone.

Chilled reggae beats? High-energy dance anthems? Or something nostalgic that makes you smile every time? I’ve cruised enough to know which songs hit just right at sea and which ones make you want to skip to the next port.

man listening to music on a cruise ship deck

Forget endlessly scrolling Spotify. These handpicked tracks capture the true spirit of cruising – from the freedom, the fun, and the sunsets, to the late-night dance floors. Ready to build the ultimate cruise playlist? Here are the songs that always set the tone…

1. Kokomo by The Beach Boys

The 1980s aren’t generally regarded as the finest period for the Beach Boys, but this track’s a classic! With its lyrics reeling off the kind of exotic destinations you might visit on a cruise, Kokomo is one of the very best cruising songs.

2. Orinoco Flow by Enya

With its refrain of “sail away, sail away, sail away!” It’s the perfect soundtrack as you sit back, relax and watch the world float by. Perfect for a river cruise along the Orinoco, but it’s a laid-back treat anywhere!

3. Banana Boat Song Day O by Harry Belafonte

This Jamaican folk song may have risen to prominence as a work song, but today it’s Harry Belafonte’s version that’s best known. Surprisingly joyful for what was a work song, the call and response lyric makes it a fun song to sing as you sail along the ocean.

4. Love Boat by Jack Jones

I’m (just about) old enough to remember watching The Love Boat every weekend. And its bombastic theme tune certainly conjures up images of onboard romances, making it the ideal soundtrack to an onboard romance, whether you’re cruising with your partner or you’re hoping to find love on board!

Suggested read: The Story of the Actress Behind The Love Boat’s Julie McCoy

5. Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding

This all-time soul classic is one of the very best cruise songs to chill out to as you sit back, relax and watch the ever-changing views on board your cruise. Perfect as you’re sitting on the deck of the ship.

6. Three Little Birds by Bob Marley

One of the greatest reggae songs of all time. It’s the ideal cruising song for a Caribbean cruise, but it’s a great song to enjoy as you relax on board any cruise, perhaps sipping a cooling rum and Coke as you sail along.

7. Sailing by Christopher Cross

With its sweeping strings, gorgeous melody, and aspirational lyric, this slice of “yacht rock” is the ideal accompaniment to sailing of any type. That certainly includes cruising, which makes this one of the best songs about cruise ships, whether that was Christopher Cross’s intention or not.

8. Adventure Of A Lifetime by Coldplay

What is a cruise if not an adventure of a lifetime? Whatever your opinion on the indie rock of Chris Martin and his band, you can’t deny that this anthemic banger makes for one of the best cruising songs as you’re sailing along on your literal adventure of a lifetime.

9. Cake By The Ocean by DNCE

This is definitely one of the best pop songs of recent years. It’s also one of the best cruise songs to chill out to whether you’re enjoying literal “cake on the ocean” or metaphorical “cake on the ocean” (if you know, you know!)

10. Fireflies by Owl City

Owl City may be a one-hit wonder, but what a hit! Stick this former number 1 on your playlist and who knows, you might even see ten million fireflies in the evening sky as you sail along to this twinkly pop song. The perfect accompaniment to that stunning twilight scenery.

11. Good To Be Alive (Hallelujah) by Andy Grammer

This euphoric, soulful dance tune is one of the best cruising songs for the nighttime. It’s ideal listening for your cruise playlist, and it’s a top tune to blast out as you “finally find your hallelujah” on board your cruise!

Now, this is a proper party banger! This smash hit is pure joy in audio form, making it one of the best cruising songs to get you in the mood to party the night away on board your cruise ship.

13. Jammin by Bob Marley & The Wailers

Another all-time reggae classic from Bob Marley & The Wailers. They truly deserve their spots on my list of the best cruising songs, especially if you’re on a Caribbean cruise. But no matter where you’re sailing, sipping rum and jammin’ along with Bob and company is a delight on any cruise.

14. Red, Red Wine by UB40

If your tipple of choice is a spot of vino, rather than rum, this pop-reggae hit is one of the best cruising songs for you. Just imagine it! Sitting back, sipping a lovely glass of red, red wine with this on your playlist as you admire the stunning scenery.

15. It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere by Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett

16. No Woman No Cry by Bob Marley

He’s back again! Because let’s face it, who better to listen to on a Caribbean cruise (or any cruise, for that matter)? The song’s uptempo calypso beat will sound so good as you relax in the sun on board your ship!

17. Beyond The Sea by Bobby Darin

As you relax on board your cruise ship, sailing along the waters, your thoughts will no doubt turn toward what might lie beyond the sea. Therefore, this swingin’ hit from crooner Bobby Darin is one of the very best cruising songs for your playlist.

18. Come Sail Away by Styx

A bit of a literal choice, perhaps, but this track from rockers Styx really is one of the ultimate cruise songs of all time! You simply can’t argue with the sentiment of the lyric and title, “Let’s sail Away” indeed!

19. Rock The Boat by Hues Corporation

You won’t want to rock the boat, baby while you’re relaxing as your ship sails along. But you certainly will want to get the party rockin’ to this absolute disco banger when you’re partying the night away on the onboard dancefloor!

20. Island In The Sun by Weezer

This slice of power pop finds US alt-rockers Weezer in an unusually laid-back mood. This makes their hit single Island in the Sun one of the best cruise songs to enjoy as you sail toward an island in the sun yourself!

21. Two Pina Coladas by King of Country

This upbeat track combines twangy country with a calypso beat. Its refrain of “bring me two pina Coladas” will have you singing along to it on board in no time as you sip your very own pina Coladas (maybe one in each hand, like the song, suggests!)

22. Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett

Another great cocktail-based song, and another track that is one of the best cruising songs. This is the ideal track to listen to as you relax on board sipping a Margarita (or any cocktail, really!) Taking yourself to Margaritaville as you sail along.

23. Walking On Sunshine by Katrina And The Waves

This uptempo, upbeat pop classic is ideal for those sunny days on board! Whether you’re relaxing on board in the afternoon sun or getting ready to party on board in the evening, Walking on Sunshine is definitely one of the very best cruise songs!

24. Let’s Groove by Earth, Wind & Fire

This lively disco stomper is sure to get you in a dancin’ mood as you groove the night away on the onboard dancefloor on your cruise ship! So why not crank it up loud and head for the dance floor? Let’s Groove!

25. Piano Man by Billy Joel

If you’d rather spend your evenings on board relaxing with a drink than hitting the dancefloor then this all-time classic by the legendary ‘Piano Man’ himself is the perfect cruise song for your playlist. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the dulcet tones of Billy Joel – pure bliss!

26. Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond

Who doesn’t love this fantastic pop song? It’s an all-time classic, and in recent years, it’s practically become the UK’s second national anthem! It’s guaranteed to get a convivial sing-along going with your fellow cruisers if they hear it blasting from your cruise playlist!

27. All Night Long by Lionel Richie

Yet another all-time party classic for your cruise playlist! This slice of soulful pop is one of the best cruise songs because it’s guaranteed to put you in the mood for an unforgettable night of merriment and revelry (all night, all night long!)

28. Beautiful Day by U2

This joyous anthem from the long-running Irish rockers U2 is the perfect accompaniment to a “Beautiful Day” on board your cruise ship. You’re sure to agree with its uplifting sentiments as you enjoy your day on your cruise! One of the most joyful cruising songs for your playlist.

39. Surfin’ USA by The Beach Boys

The second entry on my list for The Beach Boys! Surfin’ USA sees The Beach Boys in their surf-pop prime, and Surfin’ USA is a summertime smash of epic proportions. A must for any cruise to the USA, but an absolute pleasure to hear on a sunny day absolutely anywhere!

Carnival Guest Using Scooter Demands ‘Able-Bodied’ Passengers Take the Stairs

Mobility scooters on cruise ships are becoming more and more common.   Combine that fact with busy elevators—especially on embarkation day—and it’s a recipe bound to upset more than a few passengers.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador addressed this topic this morning, as a former guest made a demand for “able-bodied” passengers to take the stairs and leave the elevators for those you rely on them.

In a video on Facebook, Carnival’s John Heald stated that one of their ships would have 100 mobility scooters on board this week, adding that this was a fairly common number the cruise line was seeing.

Last year, Cruise Fever reported on this issue as some passengers requested a separate elevator for mobility scooters.

The Cruise Passengers Frustration

In today’s social media post, Heald shared a message he received that was “to the point”.  It was from a guest who uses a mobility scooter and is clearly frustrated by what they see as a lack of consideration from other passengers.

The sender didn’t pull any punches, claiming “total disrespect” from able-bodied guests.  The message read, in part:

“When is Carnival Cruise Line going to pledge to make people walk the stairs if they are not physically challenged as myself. I live in a single level home and have to use a mobility scooter. I find it so frustrating when I see able-bodied Carnival passengers showing total disrespect for those of us who depend on elevators. They push in front of us and do not allow us to access the elevators most of the time.”

Going further, the woman suggested a pretty direct solution: “You should have one elevator in every section, 24 hours a day, only for mobility scooters, disabled and physically challenged passengers.”

And the message wrapped up with a rather harsh personal wish aimed squarely at Heald: “John, you can scold me for saying this, but I really do not care. It is my wish that one day you have serious bad health and find yourself using a mobility scooter.”

Heald Responds

On the idea of dedicated elevators, Heald explained the practical problems. While he seemed to understand the intent, he pointed out that making it happen would require a large number of crew members essentially acting as full-time “elevator operator[s]” – a setup that’s currently “just not possible.”

Heald recognized that this issue isn’t new but has grown more as of late. “If you’d ask this question 10 years ago [it] would have been a surprise because there were very few mobility scooters,” he commented.

He shared a recent observation from one ship where a quick check revealed “at least 100” mobility scooters onboard, adding, “that’s normal now.”

Patience and Next Steps

Heald made it clear he gets the difficulties faced by those using mobility scooters. “I do understand the challenges, I really do,” he stated. “There’s just more than ever these days and it is definitely a challenge. We want to do better, we want to do more.”

He expressed his belief that “the vast amount of guests who sail, if they see somebody in a mobility scooter or definitely in a wheelchair, they are always going to give preference to them,” but admitted that “there are times when the elevators get ridiculously busy.”

His takeaway? “a massive dollop of patience is required” from everyone.

Adding a touch of his signature humor, Heald joked about the woman’s wish for his health. If that day comes, he joked, he’d turn it into his own version of “Meals on Wheels,” getting the crew to load him up with food to hand out around the ship.

Heald wrapped up by saying Carnival would “look at it and see what we can do better from both sides.”

Bottom Line

A little elevator etiquette on any cruise ship can go a long way to ensure everyone on board has a great vacation at sea.  I recommend taking the stairs as often as possible if only going up or down a deck or two, but it’s hard to avoid the elevator altogether for even the most able-bodied passengers.

I’ve had my foot run over a few times by scooters in a cramped elevator, so now I just defer to taking the next elevator if possible.  As with most things on a cruise ship, not letting the little things bother you is key to having a relaxing getaway.

Elderly Couple Accused Of Jewel Heist On Italy Cruise

Two senior cruise guests from Chile are suspected of stealing a valuable ring during a stop in Messina, Sicily.

Celebrity Constellation

According to the Flying Squad of the Messina Police Headquarters and the Maritime Border Police Office, the couple – aged 77 and 87 – allegedly walked out of a local jewellery shop with a ring valued at around €1,000 (approximately $1,100 USD) on 11th May 2025.

At the time, they were passengers aboard Celebrity Constellation, which was docked in Messina as part of its 11-night “Best of Italy & Croatia” cruise.

Theft Went Unnoticed Until Ship Had Sailed

The couple had reportedly asked to try on the ring before allegedly leaving the shop with it.

The theft wasn’t immediately detected by the store’s staff, and by the time the missing ring was discovered, Celebrity Constellation had already departed for Naples, its next port of call.

Messina authorities quickly notified their counterparts in Naples, who conducted a search when the ship docked.

Police reportedly found the missing jewellery item among the couple’s personal belongings.

A statement from Messina police confirms that the two suspects are presumed innocent pending trial.

The exact status of the couple – whether in custody, under bail, or returned to Messina – has not been made public. There has also been no official comment from Celebrity Cruises or its parent company, Royal Caribbean Group.

The 2,170-passenger Celebrity Constellation, a Millennium-class vessel launched in 2001, is currently operating round-trip sailings from Ravenna to Rome with port calls including Zadar, Dubrovnik, and Split in Croatia; Kotor in Montenegro; and several Italian destinations including Livorno, Naples, and Messina.

Following the Mediterranean season, the ship is due to reposition to Tampa, Florida, for the winter cruise season beginning in late 2025.

One of Several Cruise-Related Crimes This Spring

This incident is one of a growing number of unusual crime-related events aboard or connected to cruise ships in recent weeks.

  • On 3rd May 2025, a MSC Virtuosa guest died after a physical altercation onboard during a two-night cruise from Southampton to Bruges. A 57-year-old man was arrested for murder, and later reports indicate a second person has also been detained.
  • In mid-April, US Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted two female cruise guests at Long Beach Cruise Port in California attempting to smuggle more than 700 cartons of undeclared cigarettes. Travellers are permitted only 200 cigarettes without a special licence.
