5 Reasons Families Really Need To Book Cruises In Advance

I used to always book my holidays at the last minute. Maybe a few months before, maximum. But not anymore.

Child and parent booking a cruise

Now, I’m much more likely to have any cruises booked as far in advance as possible – sometimes two years or more. And it’s all because I’m booking for my family.

And trust me – once you understand the secrets of booking family cruises, you’ll be doing the same thing.

What I’ve Learned From Working in the Cruise Industry

I’ve worked in travel for 15 years and spent 5 years working in marketing at a well-known cruise travel agency. In that time, I spent more time staring at cruise websites than most die-hard cruise addicts will do in a lifetime.

Just as someone who works in a shoe shop probably buys a lot of shoes, I ended up booking a lot of cruises for myself.

me and my family on a cruise

And so because of that, I know my way around the different types of cruise offers.

I used to think that early booking offers were a con. And you know what, they sometimes kind of are – particularly for land-based holidays.

In my pre-family and pre-cruise days, I worked for various travel companies, updating travel websites with offers such as “Book early and save up to £50 per person”. Yet, I also saw that those who booked at the last minute would get their holidays for less.

A few weeks before departure, the flights would still have seats, the hotels would still have rooms and package holiday companies would be forced to slash prices to avoid making losses.

However… all holidays are not equal. When it comes to cruises, and in particular family cruises, the best time to book a cruise is, in most cases, as soon as the itineraries are released for sale.

Let them find your perfect trip…

Read on to learn why you should book a family cruise as early as possible, particularly if, like me, you don’t have a huge budget.

Why Families Should Book Cruises In Advance

1. Cabins That Sleep Three or Four (or More) Are in Short Supply

Once the domain of newlyweds and retirees, cruise holidays are now a very popular choice for families.

Today’s modern cruise ships are bigger, brighter and packed with more family facilities than ever before. Going beyond water slides and rock climbing walls, you’ll now find ships with rollercoasters, go-karting tracks and even virtual reality trampolines onboard.

However, many cruise ships on the ocean today were actually built a number of years ago, when the ratio of families to couples wasn’t quite as high as it is today. And on those ships, the majority of cabins only accommodate two people.

A proportion of cruise ship cabins have extra beds in the form of sofa beds or bunk beds which come down from the ceiling.

As a cruise ship gets booked up, you’ll often find that all the cabins that sleep four sell out first, leaving just the two-berth cabins left. So, whilst couples may be able to get a good last-minute deal on the last remaining cabins, this is, unfortunately, much less likely for families.

2. The Cheapest Cabins Sell Out First

If, like me, you’re on a tight budget, you might want to book an inside cabin to save a few hundred pounds. Look at the deck plans of any cruise ship and you’ll see that there are fewer inside cabins than outside cabins.

What’s more, within the category of ‘inside cabins’, there are several grades, which are usually annotated with letters or numbers, such as “PF”. There may be 5-10 grades of inside cabin, which each have different prices.

The more expensive grades of cabin tend to be in a slightly more convenient position on the ship, such as in the middle, rather than at the front or back, which can save you a little bit of walking. Or, they might be ever-so-slightly larger.

The price that you see advertised will be for the cheapest cabin. Then, when you book, you’ll have the option to choose a higher grade for a supplement.

For example:

  • Cheapest cabin – right at the front of the ship
  • £50 more – in the middle of the ship
  • £100 more – in the middle of the ship and slightly larger

I understand that everyone has their own priorities. But, for me, I’d happily spend a couple of minutes walking and have a slightly smaller room to be able to stick £100 in my back pocket. I always want to book the cheapest cabin grade. Even if I’m going to book a balcony cabin, I want the cheapest grade of balcony cabin.

As many other people are of this view, and want to avoid paying more than the price that they see advertised, the cheapest grades of cruise cabins tend to sell out first, then the next one up, and so on.

Book your cruise after the cheapest grade of cabin has sold out and you will pay more. Yes, your room will be a bit bigger or a bit nearer the middle of the ship, but it will cost you more.

3. Ships Sometimes Only Accept So Many Children in Each Age Group

It’s not just the cabins that can fill up on a cruise ship. Even if there are family cabins available, if you try to book your cruise too late, you may find that the onboard kids’ club is full.

To avoid turning children away from the kids’ clubs at the door, some cruise lines don’t allow any more children to book on to the cruise once the kids’ club is full.

For example, if the 3-5 age group is at capacity for the kids’ club, you won’t be able to book the cruise with a four-year-old. However, if you tried to book with a six-year-old you would be fine.

Suggested read: Cruise Kids Club Age Groupings Guide

If you have children of different ages, you’re more likely to be affected by this.

4. School Holiday Cruises Fill Up More Quickly

It’s a sad fact that cruises (and most other types of holidays) cost lots more in the school holiday periods. It’s a simple case of supply and demand.

Due to the increased demand, school holiday cruises also book up much faster than those sailing outside of term time. This makes it pretty much impossible to get a cheap last-minute deal on a family cruise cabin in the school holidays.

However, annoyingly, last-minute school holiday bargains are more often available for couples – great news if you’re a teacher with no kids! Here’s why…

I saw a last-minute cruise in October half term. £699 per person. Great value, I thought! I enquired about a cabin for two adults and two children and was quoted over £5000. Why? Why does a cruise for four people cost seven times the ‘per person’ price???

The answer is that the cheap cabin only sleeps two, and it was reduced because couples aren’t exactly queueing up to book a cruise on a family ship in half term! The four-person cabin which was left would have been of a higher grade.

Occasionally, a solution to this problem can be to book two cabins. After all, children are sometimes charged the full adult fare anyway, so two cheap cabins can be cheaper than one luxury one in this situation.

However, as you’d need to have one adult and one child in each cabin for safety reasons, you’d want cabins next door, or at least nearby. And by the time cruise prices drop you’ll be unlikely to find this.

5. Booking Early Gives You Time To Save

The further in advance you book your cruise, the longer you have to save for it. I could never afford a cruise that sails next month. But can I afford one that sails in two years’ time? Absolutely!

The balance of a cruise isn’t usually due until 12 weeks before departure. To make things even easier, some travel agents don’t require any deposit payment at all to book, and will allow you to set up a monthly direct debit with no interest.

A smiling family of four stands in front of a docked P&O cruise ship. The mother, wearing a yellow cardigan, holds the camera, while the father, in a red hoodie, stands beside their son in a green hoodie and daughter in a pink jacket, who holds postcards. The cruise ship features the Union Jack on its bow.

You Can Book Really Early…

As soon as cruises are released is often the best time to book. This can be 18 months to two years before the cruise sets sail.

Cruise itineraries are released in a few batches throughout the year, and the dates vary for each cruise line. If you’re booking a cruise for the summer, watch out for sailings being released around October or November, not the year before, but the year before that.

If you sign up to my email, I will send you a weekly roundup of the best cruise deals that I’ve found that week for you. It’s completely free, and if you don’t like it, you can easily unsubscribe, no questions asked.

I hope this article has given you some insight into why the best time to book a cruise is early if you’re travelling with children. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s just a marketing tactic. I used to think that too!

The 7 Cruise Destinations That Are Perfect For December Getaways

December doesn’t have to be cold and miserable. Why not get away from it all and enjoy a cruise?

Christmas cruise

There’s a good chance you’re reading this article during the warmer months and you’re just enjoying the nice weather, or thinking more about summer getaways. But trust me – when December rolls around, you’ll wish you’d booked a cruise getaway.

The thing is, deciding between the destinations isn’t always straight forward, and some of the best ones aren’t even warm-weather regions…

1. The Caribbean

The Caribbean is always a great place to visit on a cruise and December is no exception. In fact, it’s probably the best place to go on a cruise in December.

Christmas beach

Of course, the weather is a big reason to cruise to the Caribbean and in December you can expect warm weather, very little rainfall and low humidity.

You’re looking at temperatures around 25-28°C (77-82°F) in the daytime and around 18°C (64°F) at night. So more or less ideal!

Cruise mummy taking a picture with a giant christmas tree
Me on a Caribbean cruise in December

The atmosphere on board cruises in the Caribbean tends to be more relaxed and less formal than you will find in many other locations (if you prefer a dressier cruise, consider Cunard or Celebrity Cruises).

If you plan to go around Christmas time, you’ll find that most cruise ships will embrace the Christmas spirit and have lots of events to celebrate the festive season. The ship will be decked out with Christmas decorations, there will be special Christmas meals, choirs, Christmas carols and visits from Santa himself.

Giant christmas tree

If you are on board a cruise ship at the end of December you can expect to celebrate New Year with deck parties, live music and dancing. You may even get the chance to view spectacular fireworks in port.

December is the start of the peak season for cruises in the Caribbean so don’t expect to have the ship to yourself (actually, don’t ever expect this!)

If you are looking for a slightly quieter and cheaper time for your cruise then the start of December is your best bet as prices will climb for the Christmas and New Year period.

2. European Christmas Markets

Obviously, Christmas looms large over the whole month of December and if you’re looking for a cruise that really gets you in the holiday spirit then it doesn’t get much more Christmassy than visiting some European Christmas markets.

European Christmas Markets
Hamburg Christmas Market

You can visit Christmas markets on either a river cruise or an ocean cruise. By taking a river cruise you’ll be able to travel into the heart of Europe where many of the most famous and picturesque Christmas markets can be found.

By taking a cruise on the Rhine or Danube you can visit several famous markets on one holiday. A Rhine Cruise takes in places like Rüdesheim, Koblenz, Bonn, Cologne and Strasbourg.

The Cologne Christmas Market is one of the most famous in Europe and is set against the stunning backdrop of the Cologne Cathedral. The Strasbourg Christmas Market claims to be the oldest Christmas market in Europe. It’s definitely among the most picturesque as the medieval old town is adorned with lights.

European Christmas Markets with a huge church behind
Cologne Christmas Market

A Danube cruise will visit markets in places like Linz, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.

Vienna’s Christmas markets are known for their elegance. The city has several markets, but the Christkindlmarkt on the central Rathausplatz square is the most famous. Here, you can enjoy ice skating, classical music performances, and a wide variety of festive treats.

If you prefer an ocean cruise, you can enjoy Christmas markets in Tallinn, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Bruges amongst others, and there are some cruise lines still offering Northern Europe cruises during these months – although your choice will be more limited than in the summer.

Me with friends on a Northern Europe cruise in December

The great thing about visiting Northern Europe in the winter is that it’s nice and cold, but not too cold. You can expect the temperature to be somewhere around the zero degrees C mark, so expect a dusting of snow, without getting frostbite!

3. Antarctic Expeditions

December is the start of summer in the Antarctic which, combined with the holiday season, means that it’s the peak season for Antarctic cruises.

Hurtigruten cruise ship behind penguins

The weather in December is ‘relatively’ mild with average temperatures between -2 and 1°C (29-34°F degrees). Ok, it’s not T-shirt weather, but for Antarctica, this is pretty warm and daytime temperatures can get up to 10°C (50°F) on a warm day. Which means it could well be warmer than December in the UK!

As it’s the height of summer, you can also enjoy constant daylight and a midnight sun. Around the solstice, you can actually see the sun 24 hours a day.

The good weather in December means that animals are more active and entering their breeding season. You’re very likely to see seal pups on ice floes, while for most of December, penguins will be laying and incubating their eggs.

Penguin chicks begin to hatch toward the end of the month in Antarctica but if you want to see these super cute babies, they begin hatching earlier in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia.

December is also a good time to cruise the Antarctic as you have a decent chance of a calm voyage in an area famous for rough seas.

The atmosphere onboard is a bit more quiet and serious than some other cruise destinations with the main focus being on animal encounters, scientific monitoring, education and exploration. This isn’t a party destination!

Hurtigruten cruiseship travelling the antarctic ocean

As it’s a busy month, it’s worth booking your cruise well in advance (over a year). There are a few companies that specialise in cruises to the Antarctic.

Hurtigruten offers eco-friendly expedition cruises in vessels equipped with science centres and expert guides. Hurtigruten ships carry around 500 passengers.

Quark Expeditions provides small-group experiences that focus on in-depth exploration and wildlife encounters. They have helicopters on board to get you really close to the action!

Silversea Expeditions combine luxury with adventure, offering all-inclusive cruises on specialist expedition ships with highly trained naturalists, zodiac landings, and comfortable accommodation. If you don’t fancy sailing across the notorious Drake’s Passage, they will fly you over instead.

Ponant is a French company that sails some of the most luxurious expedition ships in the world. These tend to be smaller ships carrying around 250 passengers. A new carbon-neutral ship is set to launch in 2030.

4. Australia and New Zealand

December is also the start of summer for cruises to Australia and New Zealand so you’ll get nice long warm days (not quite as long as in Antarctica!). There are lots of different itineraries to choose from that visit Australia, New Zealand, or both.

Sydney Australia

The most popular ports to visit in Australia are:

Sydney

One of the nicest harbour cities in the world, with a stunning skyline and the famous bridge and opera house.

Cairns

Cairns serves as the starting point for many to make the short trip to the Great Barrier Reef. It’s in northern Queensland so it’ll be hot due to the tropical climate.

Hobart, Tasmania

This port has a fascinating history as an old penal colony and a spectacular natural environment with spectacular national parks.

Other ports you can visit include Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island.

New Zealand lake
New Zealand

In New Zealand you may call in at:

Auckland

A bustling city of sails and a popular destination for cruises.

Milford Sound

The most famous area in the Fiordland National Park. There is no dock here but the views alone make this one of the highlights of a New Zealand cruise.

Wairangi/Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is a spectacular collection of islands located just off of the northern tip of the North Island.

Wairangi/Bay of Islands
Bay of Islands

There are a lot of possible destinations in New Zealand, including Port Chalmers, Christchurch (Lyttelton), Wellington, Gisborne and Tauranga for Rotorua.

You should be able to find a cruise to suit any budget since there is a wide range of options for shorter or longer-duration cruises.

Holland America Line offers some of the lowest price cruises in Australasia, despite their premium service. Cunard is a mid-range option while Oceania and Silversea provide a more high-end experience.

5. Asia

December is a great time to explore Asia on a cruise. The weather in this region is generally warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 32°C (75°F – 90°F).

Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore are popular destinations for cruises and you can call in at ports like Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Langkawi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hanoi.

Spectrum of the Seas in Singapore

Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean all run similar itineraries in this area. Royal Caribbean tends to be the best value.

If you are looking for a luxury option, Seabourn runs all-inclusive small ships with gourmet food, but they are not so family-friendly.

6. Middle East

For most of the year, the Middle East is just too hot to be comfortable to visit. Which is why December is the perfect time for a Middle East cruise.

At this time of year, you can escape the chill at home while enjoying the hot, but not too hot, weather in this part of the world.

MSC Musica cruising the middle eastern ocean

You can expect temperatures around 27°C (80°F) and can leave the raincoat at home since there is minimal rainfall.

Visiting this part of the world is a bit different to somewhere like the Caribbean. When you spend days on land, you need to be more aware of the local cultural norms and ensure that you dress appropriately for the situation.

Cruise Mummy family in Doha

Before you go it’s also worth reading up on personal considerations in a part of the world, where things like hand-holding and kissing in public can be discouraged or banned, even amongst heterosexual couples. Alcohol consumption often isn’t allowed except in hotels catering to Western tourists.

There are a few different itineraries that cover the Middle East. Some of the places you can visit include Doha in Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas in the United Arab Emirates, Dammam in Saudi Arabia, Salalah in Oman, and Safaga (for the spectacular temples of Luxor) in Egypt.

Doha Qatar

Cruises can be combined to include Mediterranean sites or exploration of the Indian or African coasts.

Cruising the Middle East is rapidly gaining in popularity. MSC Cruises has the largest presence in the region, but you will also find plenty of sailings from Costa Cruises and AIDA (German language). Royal Caribbean, Scenic and Windstar also have limited sailings in the Middle East.

7. Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is an engineering marvel. But, to really appreciate it you need to get inside the canal. And the best way, in my opinion, is to go on a cruise.

Coral Princess Panama

The best time of year to cruise the Panama Canal is December. The rainy season in Panama runs from mid-April to mid-December. That makes January to March very crowded, and also very expensive. So December is the sweet spot between good weather and avoiding the crowds.

The Panama Canal is 82 km (48 miles) long and connects the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean. There are 3 locks large enough to accommodate cruise ships (not the very largest cruise ships, but pretty big still) and you’ll experience being on a ship that has to rise 85 feet within a lock.

people on a Panama Canal cruise

I suggest combining a Panama Canal cruise with sights on either side to create an epic cruise taking in North America, the Caribbean, South America, Galapagos, Australia… the choices are pretty much endless! Plus, you can travel the canal in either direction, or both!

You don’t even have to travel all the way through the canal, you can do a partial crossing where your ship enters the canal and allows you to disembark for shore excursions.

There are also loads of cruise companies to choose from including Princess, Oceania and Silversea.

TODAY’S BEST CRUISE DEALS!

Don’t miss these offers…

The Bottom Line

Whether you are looking for a festive atmosphere, good weather or just to get away from it all, December is a great time to take a cruise. There are some lovely festive ports to cruise to at Christmas, but if you visit earlier in the month you can expect the same, welcoming atmostphere.

Whether you cruise over Christmas, or earlier in the month, there are so many different options for a December cruise that I’m sure you’ll find the perfect cruise for you!

Disney-Cruise-Fish-Extenders-2.jpg

Why Disney Cruise Fans Are Obsessed With Fish Extenders

A lot of people believe that the best parts of a Disney cruise have nothing to do with the entertainment or the crew, but instead are down to one little accessory they bring from home: the fish extender.

If you’ve never heard of a DCL fish extender, or you don’t know what they mean for a cruise, then I don’t blame you, as the name alone is very strange.

Disney Cruise Fish Extenders

But they’re super popular, and there’s a huge community, and maybe you’ll be as addicted as some other cruisers are?

Fish Extenders Explained

Fish extenders are hanging gift bags that you display outside your cabin door, normally hanging from the small metal fish that indicates your cabin number. You use these to exchange gifts with other people on the cruise taking part in a fish extender gift exchange.

These are pre-organised events that are wholly organised by guests and are not officially endorsed by the cruise line. You need to join in advance and then you’ll be added to the list to take part, where you’ll normally be assigned a small group to swap gifts with.

The Name is Self-Explanatory…

The reason the gift bags are called fish extenders (often abbreviated to FEs on forums and message boards) is that the gift bags are an extension of the metal fish on the wall next to your cabin door. However, you might actually have a seahorse instead of a fish if your stateroom is starboard side.

Don’t worry, there aren’t even more complications added in by having fish extenders and seahorse extenders – they’re all called fish extenders and work in the same way.

How Fish Extenders Work

If you agree to take part in a fish extender gift exchange, you’ll need to hang a fish extender outside your room and then deliver gifts to other cabins based on your assigned list. You leave these gifts in the fish extenders and wait for gifts to be left in yours.

To take part in gift swaps with fish extenders, you’ll need to find an online group for your sailing. You can sometimes find these on popular messenger boards such as Cruise Critic or DISBoards, or on Facebook groups. Once you find a group and sign up, you’ll be given a list of everyone taking part.

If the group is small, then you might be expected to deliver gifts to everyone. If a lot of people are taking part then you’ll be assigned a smaller group within that, so that you aren’t spending a fortune. Often it’s done on a one-to-one basis, so you only need to buy one gift.

Then you’ll need a fish extender of your own. A lot of people make them, but some people prefer something a little more professional-looking than they’re capable of putting together, so will order a custom-made one from Etsy.

The bags are usually embroidered with your family name, but this is up to you.

The last step before your cruise is to buy the gifts that you’re going to deliver to others taking part.

Then when you’re on the ship, you need to hang your fish extender on the fish or seahorse, and then find time to go deliver your gifts.

Disney’s Position

Fish extenders are not an official Disney cruise activity and are not endorsed by the cruise line. For a time during the COVID pandemic and aftermath, they were banned for health and safety reasons, but that is no longer the case.

Just remember that if there is a good reason for them to temporarily restrict fish extenders then the cruise line is entitled to. You can’t complain to DCL if something goes wrong with your fish extender exchange as nothing is official at all.

The Newer Ships Don’t Have Fish…

Disney Wish and Disney Treasure don’t have metal fish or seahorses but instead have themed plaques next to the room. These are just as good for hanging gift bags and so yes, you can use a fish extender on Disney Wish or Disney Treasure even though it is not a fish.

Cinderella-themed plaque on Disney Wish

Where To Buy Fish Extenders

If you want to buy a tailored fish extender that is customised with your name, your best bet is a site like Etsy, although this will be more expensive than making your own or buying a generic one.

There are some good storage hangers on Amazon that will do just the job and are relatively cheap. The best one I have found is this one…

How To Make a Fish Extender

To make a fish extender of your own, you’ll need some flat cloth to serve as the backing, and some other material to use as pockets. Stitch the pockets onto the flat hanger, and then attach string to the top so that you can hang it over the fish.

If you are good with embroidery then this is a lovely way to make a custom fish extender that is unique to you and your family.

Joining a Fish Extender Group

You can find fish extender groups either on online message boards or on Facebook. Once you’ve found one for your sailing, join the group and post a message asking to take part. They will have rules listed, so make sure you read those first to avoid asking unnecessary questions.

Once you’re in the group, the owner will confirm your place and send you a list of the staterooms you need to deliver a gift to.

Disney Magic hallway

Disney Fish Extender Gifts

How much you spend on fish extender gifts is your choice – the motto is “give what you would like to receive”. A lot of people stick to Disney magnets as they are suitably themed but quite cheap. Others may choose ornaments, but transporting them without breakage is difficult.

A lot of this will depend on who you are buying for. Some fish extender gifts are aimed at different age groups and some are for adults. Others are ‘by cabin’ where you only deliver one gift for the entire cabin to share – this might make you want to increase your budget.

Ultimately, the choice is yours but bear in mind that if there are a lot of people to buy for, you could end up spending a lot – or receiving gifts worth a lot less than you chose to spend.

The Bottom Line

Disney fish extenders are some of the strangest named items you’ll get on a cruise but they are actually quite wonderful once you know about the community involved.

They can be really magical if you’re travelling with kids – they’ll love the surprise of receiving a gift when it does appear.

There are other ways that people like to liven up their stateroom too, including cabin door decorations – where permitted, anyway. It certainly can liven up an otherwise pretty basic corridor.

NEW DEALS JUST RELEASED!

Cruise Line Fleet Shrinking Again As Another Ship Sold

Costa Cruises, a leading name in the Italian cruise market, has confirmed that the 2,700-guest Costa Fortuna, its longest-serving vessel, will leave the fleet in September 2026.

The announcement on 9th May 2025 is the latest in a series of changes for the cruise line, which has been gradually reducing its fleet over the past few years.

Costa Fortuna cruise ship

Costa Fortuna, a Destiny-class ship that began service in 2003, is set to continue offering a series of Mediterranean sailings through 2025, with departures from Barcelona, Marseille, and Savona.

In December 2025, she will reposition to the Canary Islands, offering a winter season of island cruises.

The ship will return to the Mediterranean in April 2026 for a final season, featuring Greek and Turkish itineraries from Athens and Istanbul before her transfer to a new, yet-to-be-disclosed owner.

Despite the significance of the move, Costa Cruises has provided no specific reason for Costa Fortuna’s departure.

However, the decision is in line with a trend that has seen three other Costa ships leave the fleet in recent years.

Costa Luminosa, Costa Venezia, and Costa Firenze were all transferred to sister brand Carnival Cruise Line, where they now sail as Carnival Luminosa, Carnival Venezia, and Carnival Firenze.

Strategic Path and Fleet Changes

Costa’s Strategic Path, a five-year plan launched in 2021, has focused on upgrading its fleet and enhancing guest experiences.

So far, the brand has invested 200 million euros ($225 million USD) in renovations, including the upcoming refurbishment of the 3,700-guest Costa Serena, which is scheduled to complete a dry-dock overhaul by November 2025.

Costa Serena will emerge with newly renovated suites, redesigned pools, updated lounges, and a fresh food court, featuring new dining options like Pizzeria Pummid’Oro and Sushino@Costa.

Following these enhancements, the ship will embark on a world cruise from Tokyo to Buenos Aires in 2026, before settling into South American itineraries for the 2027 winter season.

With the departure of Costa Fortuna, Costa Cruises will operate with eight ships: Costa Serena, Costa Toscana, Costa Smeralda, Costa Deliziosa, Costa Diadema, Costa Fascinosa, Costa Favolosa, and Costa Pacifica.

There are currently no new ship orders pending, suggesting that Costa will maintain a streamlined fleet in the near future.

Costa’s sister brand Carnival Cruise Line has also benefited from Costa’s fleet adjustments, adopting three of Costa’s vessels as part of its Fun Italian Style concept.

While Costa Cruises’ fleet has been shrinking, the brand maintains a focus on enhancing guest experiences through ship renovations and expanded itineraries.

According to Mario Zanetti, president of Costa Cruises, this strategy aims to provide “unmatched experiences” while balancing innovation, sustainability, and value.

“We are also investing in our fleet to enhance onboard experience and introducing new itineraries, including Costa Serena’s new deployment for 2026-2027,” Zanetti stated.

With Costa Fortuna set to sail into new waters under a different owner, Costa Cruises looks to the future with a refined fleet and a commitment to high-quality Italian cruising.

Passengers Speak Out After Cruise Line Removes Drink Package Perk

Not every change a cruise line makes is announced through official channels.  Sometimes, it’s the savvy cruise passengers that first notice something missing, and they can often be quick to post their concerns online.

Princess cruise ships, Caribbean Princess and Regal Princess in Port Everglades

At the end of last month, several guests with Princess Cruises noticed that canned sodas were no longer included in the cruise line’s Plus and Premier drink packages.  Instead, these beverage packages offer a 25% discount on cans of soda, in addition to large bottles of water.

It might seem like a small thing, but this update has really caught many cruisers off guard. People who often get canned drinks like the convenience and how they taste, and not all of them are thrilled with the apparent new change.

So, What Exactly Happened?

This change started rolling out across the Princess fleet around the end of April 2025. Some passengers on ships like Enchanted Princess noticed it by April 20th. While the official date might vary a little by ship, it seems the new rule is spreading.

The details about the drink packages on the Princess website now reflect this. They list “fountain sodas” as included but don’t mention cans anymore in the free list.

Some are feeling that the change was done a little too quietly. As one user put it simply on the Cruise Critic forums, “Princess just snuck this in, in my opinion.”

Princess Cruises Drink Package webpage

Why the Change?

There wasn’t an official press release or announcement from Princess about this move. So, most reasons for the change being talked about online are based on guesses and speculation.

One likely reason being discussed is saving money. Things like buying, storing, and handling canned drinks can be expensive for a large cruise line, especially compared to fountain soda systems.

Making drink service a bit simpler for the crew might also be a factor. Some passengers also think that maybe Princess is just starting to enforce a rule that was technically in the fine print all along, even though they used to provide soda cans in the two top tier drink packages.

How Are Cruisers Reacting?

Well, if you look at online forums and social media, you’ll see a lot of unhappy people. Many paid extra for the Plus or Premier packages because they expected everything to be covered. A frustrated passenger on Reddit summed it up as “Kind of insane.”

The difference in cost is hard for some to swallow. As a user on Cruise Critic pointed out, “I can order more expensive cocktails than I can possibly drink each day with Premiere, but a can of soda is a step too far.” Another user on the same forum agreed, calling it “a very odd/cheap/unreasonable place to draw the line in the sand.”

Taste is a big deal, too. Many people prefer the consistent flavor and bubbles in a can compared to fountain drinks, which can sometimes taste different or watered down. Plus, certain diet or caffeine-free options might only come in cans. As one Reddit user noted, “They don’t have fountain soda for Sprite Zero and at least one other.”

The general feeling from many is that this is another example of the cruise line trying to “nickel and dime” guests. Terms like “hilariously petty of Princess” and “Cheap penny-pinching” have popped up in discussions. Some feel like the overall value of their cruise vacation keeps going down.

A Reddit commenter expressed a common sentiment, saying, “Literally everything that used to be included with your fare is becoming an upcharge now.”

What Are Your Options Now?

If you really want a canned soda, you can still buy them onboard. They’ll cost you around $3.00 plus an 18% tip. If you have the Plus or Premier package, you do get a 25% discount on that price. The policy wording confirms this, stating the package includes a “25% discount on … cans of soda.”

Good news for soda fans: the Classic Soda Package and the Zero-Alcohol Package are still listed as including canned sodas.

Also, don’t forget you’re allowed to bring up to 12 sealed cans (12 ounces or less each) per person with you when you board the ship. This is a handy way to have your favorite drinks in your cabin. And if you’re an Elite member, your mini-bar might still stock cans.

So, if you’re planning a Princess cruise and think you’ll want canned sodas, it’s a good idea to check the latest drink package details on their website before you book.

The Infamous ‘Poop Cruise’ Revisited In Popular Documentary Series

Netflix is set to revisit one of the most infamous incidents in cruise history – the 2013 “Poop Cruise” aboard Carnival Triumph – as part of its upcoming documentary series, “Trainwreck.”

The episode, scheduled to air on 24th June 2025, will offer a fresh perspective on the disaster that left thousands of passengers stranded in appalling conditions.

Carnival Triumph’s four-day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, turned into a five-day ordeal after an engine room fire knocked out the ship’s power and propulsion on 10th February 2013.

The resulting chaos saw the ship adrift in the Gulf of Mexico, with passengers facing unbearable heat, dwindling food supplies, and perhaps most memorably, overflowing toilets.

The Poop Cruise – What Happened?

The electrical faults with the ship caused a number of unpleasant issues for guests.

Dubbed the “Poop Cruise” by media outlets worldwide, the disaster became a viral sensation, with images of passengers using makeshift toilet facilities and waiting for emergency food deliveries dominating headlines.

As well as the backed up toilets, there was no air conditioning or refrigeration onboard, which didn’t help with the odours onboard.

Several other Carnival ships met the ship to deliver food, water and other essentials, and by 11th February some functions were restored with the use of emergency generators.

The ship was eventually towed to Mobile, Alabama, on 14th February 2013, after being stranded for five days.

In the new episode, directed by James Ross, the documentary will move beyond the sensational headlines to tell the story from the perspective of the passengers and crew who experienced it first-hand.

“Trainwreck” is a Netflix anthology series exploring a range of notorious disasters, scandals, and mishaps.

“This isn’t just about the news coverage – it’s about the people who were trapped in a nightmare,” Netflix explained in a press release.

Other episodes in the series will cover events like the Astroworld tragedy, the fall of American Apparel, and Nevada’s Area 51.

The 1999-built Carnival Triumph, which was overhauled and rebranded as Carnival Sunrise in 2019, has since put the disaster behind it.

But for those who lived through the ordeal, it remains a memory that won’t be forgotten – a memory that Netflix’s documentary will now bring back to life this June.

Luxury Cruise Captain Fined After Dangerous Route Risks Passengers & Wildlife

The captain of Silversea Cruises’ Silver Ray has received a formal warning and a fine after the luxury cruise ship sailed into protected waters near the famous Faraglioni of Capri.

Silver Ray Fined For Sailing Next To Faraglioni of Capri

The incident occurred on 3rd May 2025.

The 801-foot vessel, which was operating an 11-night voyage from Barcelona, Spain, to Rome, Italy, was captured on video sailing within 500 meters (1,640 feet) of the iconic rock formations – a restricted zone established to protect the region’s fragile marine ecosystem.

The incident came to light after an Italian environmental association, Legambiente, submitted video footage of Silver Ray’s close approach to the Italian Coast Guard.

Officials used Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to confirm the ship’s route, verifying that it had entered the restricted waters.

As a result, the cruise line was issued a fine of €1,032, and the ship’s captain received a formal written warning from the Campanian Maritime Authority.

Although the fine may seem small for a luxury cruise line, which earns millions in annual revenue, it sends a strong message about the importance of adhering to marine protection laws.

Environmental Concerns

The waters around the Faraglioni of Capri are protected for a reason.

This area is home to several endangered species, including rare coral, a variety of fish, the blue lizard (a subspecies of the Italian wall lizard), and the Mediterranean monk seal, which has recently been sighted in the region.

Sailing a large vessel too close to these fragile ecosystems poses a significant risk, both to the wildlife and the ship itself.

Although the Silver Ray did not cause any documented damage, the incident has drawn comparisons to the Costa Concordia tragedy of 2012, when a similar “salute manoeuvre” led to a catastrophic shipwreck that claimed 32 lives.

In response to the incident, Legambiente’s Capri chapter is calling for the waters surrounding Capri to be officially designated as a Marine Protected Area, with stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Silversea Cruises has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.

Even if coach travel isn’t included, you can usually add it on for an extra charge, as long as there is space on the coach for you.

The service is called Cruise Connect and it is provided by Intercruises. Visit the Intercruises website to book online or over the phone.

Pick Up Points Aren’t Guaranteed

This page lists all of the possible pickup points, but not every one will be available on every cruise. If you leave it too late to book, there may be no spaces left from your chosen departure point.

In this case, an alternative would be to take the Megabus or National Express.

You may also want to consider a train to Southampton or even a flight, depending on where you live. The easiest way to compare all travel options is to use a comparison site like Omio. This doesn’t include Cruise Connect coaches, but it does have some other options for you to consider.

My Experience

P&O Cruises Cruise Connect coaches are generally very good. The coaches are usually modern and well-equipped with clean toilets and there are sometimes movies shown on the TV.

In my experience, the drivers vary, with some being incredibly friendly and chatty, and some being completely miserable and unhelpful.

The great thing about Cruise Connect coach transfers is that they often go straight to the cruise port with no stops. Of course, the route depends on how many people want to travel from each pick-up point.

And because this is P&O Cruises’ official coach transfer service, you never have to worry about missing your ship. If there’s a delay due to traffic, breakdown or any other reason, you can relax knowing that the ship will wait for you.
