Viking took delivery of Viking Dagur, a river ship that was built at Meyer’s Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany.

The 190-guest Viking Dagur is the latest Viking Longship that will offer cruises on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. This state-of-the-art vessel is a sister ship to the cruise line’s award-winning Longships that are so popular in Europe.

The ship has 95 staterooms, features elegant Scandinavian design and the industry-leading innovations for which Viking is known.

Itineraries the ship will sail include Rhine Getaway, Paris to the Swiss Alps, Christmas on the Rhine and Christmas on the Rhine & Moselle.

Leah Talactac, President and CEO of Viking, gave the following statement:

“We are proud to welcome the Viking Dagur to our award-winning river fleet. The arrival of our newest river ship marks another important milestone as we continue to expand opportunities for curious travelers to explore the world in Viking comfort. We look forward to welcoming guests on board this elegant new ship as she begins sailing our itineraries in the heart of Europe.”

Viking expect to take delivery of another 21 river cruise ships by 2028. The cruise line is also adding nine new ocean ships and tow new expedition ships by 2031. This will give Viking 114 river ships and 26 ocean and expedition ships in their fleet.

Celebrity Cruises Raises Daily Gratuities By $1.50 Across Fleet

Celebrity Cruises has implemented a gratuity increase of $1.50 per guest, per day across all stateroom categories, effective 29th July 2026.

The adjustment brings standard stateroom gratuities to $19.50 daily, whilst The Retreat guests now pay $24.50 – a percentage increase ranging from 6.5% to 8.3% depending on cabin type.

The premium cruise line began notifying guests on 29th July 2026, the same day the new rates took effect, according to email communications sent to booked passengers. This timing has sparked significant frustration within the Celebrity Cruises community, as many guests discovered they had no opportunity to prepay gratuities at the previous lower rate.

The notification email outlined how gratuity charges are distributed throughout the vessel’s crew. “These gratuities are thoughtfully shared among our dining, bar and culinary teams, stateroom attendants, and the many crew members who help create the elevated experience you’ll enjoy onboard,” the communication stated.

New Rate Structure Affects All Accommodation Categories

The $1.50 daily increase applies uniformly across Celebrity Cruises’ entire stateroom inventory, though the base rates vary by accommodation tier. Inside, oceanview, and veranda staterooms now carry a gratuity charge of $19.50 per guest, per day, up from the previous $18 rate.

Concierge and AquaClass staterooms, which offer additional amenities and premium access, now require $20.50 per guest, per day in gratuities. The previous rate for these mid-tier premium accommodations stood at $19 per guest, per day.

The Retreat, Celebrity Cruises’ ship-within-a-ship concept offering exclusive access to private lounges, dedicated dining venues, and personalised butler service, now commands $24.50 per guest, per day. This represents an increase from the former $23 daily rate.

Percentage Increases Vary By Stateroom Category

When calculated as percentage increases, the adjustments impact different stateroom categories at varying rates. Standard staterooms – inside, oceanview, and veranda categories – experienced the steepest proportional increase at 8.3%.

Cruise Mummy Celebrity Apex Infinite Veranda

Concierge and AquaClass staterooms saw a 7.9% increase in their daily gratuity charges. The Retreat, despite having the highest absolute gratuity rate, experienced the smallest percentage increase at 6.5%.

For a typical seven-night cruise, a couple in a standard stateroom will now pay an additional $21 in gratuities compared to the previous rate structure. A family of four on the same sailing would see an extra $42 in gratuity charges, whilst larger groups face proportionally higher increases.

Pre-Payment Option Offers Limited Window For Savings

The notification email provided guests with instructions to prepay gratuities at the current rate before their sailing, potentially allowing them to lock in the lower price. However, the simultaneous timing of the announcement and implementation severely limited this opportunity.

“If you’d like, you’re welcome to prepay these discretionary gratuities at the current rate prior to your sailing,” the email explained, directing guests to the cruise line’s website for the prepayment process. “Otherwise, they will be conveniently applied to your onboard account daily at the new rate starting July 29, 2026.”

Many guests reported receiving the notification on 29th July itself, meaning the system had already updated to reflect the new higher rates by the time they attempted to prepay. This effectively eliminated the opportunity to secure the lower pricing that the email appeared to offer.

Celebrity Cruises maintains its policy allowing guests to review and adjust gratuities at their discretion through the Guest Relations desk whilst onboard. However, modifications cannot be made after a sailing concludes, and the cruise line does not permit adjustments via its website or customer service channels prior to embarkation.

Passenger Reaction Reflects Growing Frustration

Social media platforms and cruise enthusiast forums erupted with criticism following the announcement, with many passengers expressing dismay at both the increase itself and the manner of its implementation. The timing particularly rankled guests who had bookings departing within days or weeks of the announcement.

Celebrity Ascent

“Leaving in a week with a family of five. So we effectively just got a last minute price increase of $52.50,” one Reddit user posted in a popular cruise discussion thread. “Feels like kind of a cheap move for a ‘premium’ cruise line.”

The sentiment reflects broader concerns amongst Celebrity Cruises’ customer base regarding value proposition and transparency. As a premium cruise brand positioned above mass-market operators but below ultra-luxury lines, Celebrity attracts guests who expect superior service but remain price-conscious regarding add-on costs.

The discussion extended beyond mere price sensitivity to questions about the fundamental structure of cruise industry gratuities. Passengers increasingly question whether these charges truly function as discretionary tips or have evolved into mandatory service charges that subsidise crew wages.

Industry Context Shows Steady Gratuity Escalation

The latest increase continues a steady upward trajectory in Celebrity Cruises’ gratuity rates over recent years. In late 2021, approximately five years before this most recent adjustment, the cruise line charged $15.50 per person, per day for standard staterooms, $16 for concierge and AquaClass accommodations, and $19 for The Retreat.

This historical comparison reveals a striking reality: standard staterooms now pay more in daily gratuities than The Retreat passengers paid just five years ago. The lowest accommodation category’s current $19.50 rate exceeds the 2021 suite-level rate of $19, illustrating the significant escalation in gratuity expectations.

The cruise industry broadly has increased gratuity rates with regularity over the past decade. Major cruise lines typically adjust their suggested gratuity amounts every 18 to 24 months, citing increased crew wages, enhanced service offerings, and general inflationary pressures as justifications.

Celebrity Cruises’ parent company, Royal Caribbean Group, has implemented similar increases across its family of brands. Sister lines Royal Caribbean International and Silversea Cruises have both adjusted their gratuity structures within the past two years, though timing and amounts have varied by brand positioning.

Transparency Concerns Mount Amongst Cruise Passengers

Beyond the price increase itself, passengers are increasingly vocal about demanding greater transparency regarding how gratuity charges are distributed amongst crew members. Current cruise line policies provide only generalised descriptions of which departments receive portions of the collected funds.

“Transparency is needed. Celebrity needs to make a statement about where the money goes. Is it extra for the staff or is it just part of payroll?” another concerned passenger commented in online discussions following the announcement.

This question touches upon a fundamental tension in cruise industry labour practices. Whilst cruise lines describe gratuities as being “shared among” various crew members, the specific distribution formulas remain proprietary information. Passengers cannot verify what percentage of their daily gratuity charge reaches their cabin steward, waiter, or other service personnel.

Some cruise passengers are responding by removing automatic gratuities entirely and instead providing cash tips directly to crew members who deliver exceptional service. This approach offers passengers greater control and ensures their intended recipients receive the full amount, though it requires guests to carry sufficient cash and remember to tip appropriately throughout their voyage.

The practice remains controversial within cruising communities. Some argue it ensures crew members receive fair compensation for superior service, whilst others contend it undermines the collective distribution system that supports crew members in less visible roles who contribute significantly to the overall experience.

Comparative Analysis With Other Major Cruise Lines

At the new pricing structure, Celebrity Cruises positions itself slightly above most mass-market competitors but below ultra-luxury operators in terms of daily gratuity charges. Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity’s sister brand, currently charges $18 per guest, per day for standard staterooms and $20.50 for suites, making Celebrity’s new rates marginally higher.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s gratuity structure stands at $20 per guest, per day for most staterooms and $25 for suites and The Haven, positioning it comparably to Celebrity’s revised rates. Carnival Cruise Line maintains the lowest gratuity rates amongst major contemporary cruise operators at $16 per person, per day for standard staterooms and $18 for suites.

According to industry reporting from February 2026, Margaritaville at Sea holds the distinction of charging the highest gratuity rates in the mainstream cruise market. However, ultra-luxury lines such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn include gratuities in their upfront pricing, eliminating separate daily charges entirely.

Industry analysts anticipate other cruise lines may follow Celebrity’s lead with gratuity increases of their own in coming months. Cruise operators typically monitor competitors’ pricing adjustments carefully, and coordinated increases across multiple brands often occur within relatively short timeframes.

Implications For Celebrity Cruises’ Premium Positioning

The gratuity increase and its controversial implementation raise questions about Celebrity Cruises’ market positioning and value proposition. The brand has long marketed itself as offering premium experiences at accessible price points, appealing to guests seeking elevated service without ultra-luxury costs.

Last-minute price increases, even those categorised as gratuity adjustments rather than base fare changes, risk undermining the trust relationship between cruise line and passenger. For a brand that emphasises its “modern luxury” positioning, the perception of unexpected fees or charges conflicts with the premium experience promise.

Celebrity Cruises operates a fleet of 14 ships ranging from the Millennium-class vessels built in the early 2000s to the innovative Edge-class ships featuring revolutionary design elements. The line carries approximately 2.8 million passengers annually across itineraries spanning Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond.

The cruise line has invested significantly in fleet modernisation and onboard experience enhancements in recent years. The Edge-class ships introduced the Magic Carpet, a cantilevered platform that moves between decks, alongside the Rooftop Garden and reimagined accommodation concepts.

These innovations support Celebrity’s premium market positioning but also require substantial capital investment and operational costs.

Whether passengers will accept higher gratuity rates as a reasonable cost of maintaining premium service levels or view them as erosion of value remains to be seen. Social media sentiment suggests significant resistance, though actual booking behaviour and onboard gratuity adjustment patterns will provide more reliable indicators of passenger response.

The coming months will reveal whether Celebrity Cruises’ latest gratuity increase represents an isolated adjustment or the beginning of a broader industry trend towards higher daily service charges across the premium cruise segment.

Passenger Arrested After Allegedly Assaulting Children on Carnival Glory

A Georgia man has been arrested and charged with felony child abuse after allegedly striking two children who were playing tag aboard Carnival Glory during a Bahamas cruise.

The 44-year-old was taken into custody by Brevard County Sheriff’s Office upon the ship’s return to Port Canaveral on 27th July 2026.

Man arrested for assaulting children onboard

The alleged assault took place on 26th July 2026, during a three-night round-trip Bahamas sailing from Port Canaveral. According to court records, David Crosby II was running down a hallway with a group of children who were playing tag when he abruptly stopped and turned around.

Crosby then allegedly struck two of the children – one in the face and another in the stomach. The first child sustained a bloody lip and head pain, whilst the second suffered stomach pains from the blow.

Security cameras aboard the 110,000 gross-tonne vessel reportedly captured the incident on video. This footage has become key evidence in the case against the Georgia resident, who was arrested the following morning when the ship docked.

Carnival Glory’s Itinerary And Timeline

Carnival Glory had embarked from Port Canaveral on 24th July 2026 for what was meant to be a relaxing three-night getaway to the Bahamas. The sailing included a visit to Carnival’s newest private destination, Celebration Key, on 25th July, followed by a sea day on 26th July when the alleged assault occurred.

The ship returned to Port Canaveral early on the morning of 27th July, at which point law enforcement was waiting to take Crosby into custody. Carnival Glory is one of the cruise line’s popular Conquest-class ships, capable of carrying approximately 2,980 passengers at double occupancy.

The vessel regularly operates short Bahamas itineraries from Port Canaveral, making it a popular choice for families seeking quick cruise holidays. Following the incident and arrest, Carnival Glory departed Port Canaveral that same day on a four-night round-trip Bahamas cruise, with scheduled stops in Nassau and Celebration Key before returning on 31st July.

Alleged Perpetrator’s Response And Arrest Details

When questioned by authorities, Crosby offered no clear motive for his alleged actions against the children. According to reports from WESH 2 News, the 44-year-old told officials that he was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident and claimed to have no memory of what transpired.

Carnival Glory

However, his arrest affidavit notably indicates that investigating officers did not suspect him of being under the influence of alcohol at the time. This discrepancy between his claims and the official observations raises questions about his defence strategy moving forward.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office formally charged Crosby with one count of felony child abuse without great bodily harm and one count of simple assault. He was processed through the Brevard County booking system and subsequently released on 28th July after posting a $20,000 bond.

Legal Proceedings And Potential Consequences

Crosby’s first court appearance is scheduled for 25th August 2026, when he will face the charges brought against him. The legal consequences he faces are significant, reflecting the serious nature of the alleged offences.

If convicted on the felony child abuse charge, Crosby could face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. These penalties underscore Florida’s strict stance on crimes against children, particularly in public spaces where families expect to feel safe.

The prosecution will likely rely heavily on the security camera footage from Carnival Glory, which reportedly provides clear evidence of the incident. Witness testimony from other passengers and the children’s families will also play a crucial role in the proceedings.

Carnival’s Family-Friendly Brand And Passenger Expectations

Carnival Cruise Line has built its reputation on being one of the most family-friendly cruise operators in the industry. The brand actively markets itself to families with children, offering extensive youth programmes, family-oriented entertainment, and activities designed for all ages.

A group of joyful children racing towards the Waterworks aqua park on the deck of a Carnival Cruise ship, with clear blue skies above and the expansive ocean in the backdrop, highlighting the thrill and excitement of cruise ship activities for kids.

When booking a Carnival cruise, passengers should naturally expect to encounter children playing, running, and enjoying themselves throughout the ship. Public spaces, including hallways, pools, and recreational areas, are designed to accommodate families and the energy that comes with younger travellers.

For passengers who prefer an adult-only environment, Carnival does offer occasional adults-only sailings that cater specifically to those seeking a more tranquil cruise experience. Additionally, other cruise lines such as Virgin Voyages specialise exclusively in adults-only cruises, providing alternatives for travellers who wish to avoid family-oriented atmospheres entirely.

However, on standard Carnival sailings, the presence of children is not just expected but embraced as part of the brand’s core identity. The cruise line invests heavily in facilities such as WaterWorks aqua parks, Camp Ocean youth programmes, and family-friendly dining options to ensure younger guests have memorable experiences.

Guest Conduct Policies And Zero Tolerance For Violence

Carnival Cruise Line maintains a strict guest conduct policy that all passengers must adhere to from the moment they board until disembarkation. This policy explicitly prohibits violence, aggressive behaviour, and any actions that threaten the safety and well-being of other guests or crew members.

The consequences for violating these conduct standards can be severe, ranging from being confined to quarters during the sailing to immediate disembarkation at the next port of call. In the most serious cases, passengers can face a permanent ban from all Carnival ships, effectively ending their ability to cruise with the brand.

Carnival is not alone in enforcing such policies – violence is not tolerated aboard any major cruise line. The cruise industry as a whole has implemented comprehensive security measures and conduct guidelines to ensure the safety of all passengers, particularly vulnerable populations such as children and elderly travellers.

Security personnel aboard cruise ships are trained to respond swiftly to incidents of violence or threatening behaviour. In cases involving potential criminal activity, cruise lines work closely with law enforcement agencies at ports of call to ensure proper investigation and prosecution.

The industry has also invested in extensive surveillance systems throughout their vessels, with cameras positioned in public areas, hallways, and common spaces. This technology serves both as a deterrent to misconduct and as a valuable evidence-gathering tool when incidents do occur, as demonstrated in this case.

Impact On Families And The Cruise Experience

Incidents of violence against children aboard cruise ships, whilst relatively rare, can have lasting impacts on the families involved and other passengers who witness or become aware of such events. The two children allegedly struck by Crosby will likely remember this incident for years to come, potentially affecting their perception of cruise holidays.

For other families aboard Carnival Glory during that sailing, news of the assault may have created anxiety and concern about their own children’s safety. Parents naturally expect cruise ships to be safe environments where their children can play freely without fear of being harmed by adult passengers.

Carnival Cruise Line has not released a public statement specifically addressing this incident, which is typical practice when legal proceedings are ongoing. However, the cruise line’s swift cooperation with law enforcement – ensuring the alleged perpetrator was met by authorities upon docking – demonstrates its commitment to passenger safety and accountability.

The cruise industry invests millions of pounds annually in security training, surveillance equipment, and safety protocols designed to prevent such incidents. When they do occur, cruise lines typically conduct internal reviews to determine whether additional measures could be implemented to prevent similar situations in the future.

Broader Context Of Safety Aboard Cruise Ships

Cruise ships are generally considered safe environments for families, with crime rates significantly lower than those found in many land-based holiday destinations. The enclosed nature of ships, combined with extensive security measures and surveillance, creates an environment where serious incidents are relatively uncommon.

However, the close quarters and shared public spaces of cruise ships do occasionally lead to conflicts between passengers with different expectations and tolerance levels. Whilst most disagreements are resolved peacefully or with the intervention of crew members, some situations escalate to require law enforcement involvement.

The cruise industry has made significant strides in recent years to improve security protocols, particularly in areas concerning the safety of children and vulnerable passengers. Enhanced background checks for crew members, increased security personnel, and advanced surveillance technology have all contributed to safer cruising environments.

Passengers also have a responsibility to behave appropriately and follow ship rules, which include respecting fellow travellers and refraining from violence or threatening behaviour. Those who choose to consume alcohol whilst cruising must do so responsibly, as intoxication is never an excuse for harmful actions.

As this case proceeds through the Florida court system, it serves as a reminder that actions taken aboard cruise ships in international waters can still result in serious legal consequences when the vessel returns to port. Maritime law and jurisdictional agreements ensure that crimes committed at sea are properly investigated and prosecuted by appropriate authorities.

Plumbing Maintenance Shuts Down Toilets On Oasis Of The Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas has taken its entire vacuum plumbing system offline to complete essential maintenance work, rendering all toilets onboard unusable during specific timeframes. The repairs, scheduled for 29th July 2026, affected up to 5,602 passengers currently sailing aboard the 226,838-gross ton vessel.

The cruise line notified passengers that crew members would need to shut down the ship’s vacuum system – which is required to flush waste throughout the vessel – in order to perform critical maintenance on the plumbing infrastructure. The work was carefully timed to minimize disruption whilst ensuring the system continues operating at optimal standards.

Oasis of the seas cruise ship

Royal Caribbean strategically planned the bulk of the maintenance work whilst Oasis of the Seas remained docked in Nassau, Bahamas, providing passengers with access to shore-side facilities. The ship was scheduled to remain in the Bahamian capital from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, giving guests ample opportunity to disembark during the repair period.

According to a letter distributed to passengers and subsequently shared on social media, the cruise line outlined the specific timeframes for the system shutdown. “To ensure our plumbing system continues to operate at the highest standard, our team will be performing essential maintenance that requires temporarily shutting off the ship’s vacuum system,” Royal Caribbean explained in the communication.

The letter continued: “This work is scheduled to take place on July 29, from 10:00 am to Noon and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. During this time, toilets will not be operational.”

Two-Hour Increments With Strategic Break Period

The maintenance work was organized into two distinct two-hour periods, with a strategic one-hour break scheduled between the sessions. This approach allowed passengers to use facilities during the intermission whilst giving crew members adequate time to complete the necessary repairs.

Cruise ship bathroom

All toilet facilities were expected to return to full operational status by 3:00 p.m., assuming no unexpected complications or delays arose during the maintenance process. The careful scheduling demonstrated Royal Caribbean’s attempt to balance essential ship maintenance with passenger comfort and convenience.

The timing of the work during a port day rather than at sea represents industry best practice, as it provides passengers with alternative options and reduces the impact of the service interruption. Many cruise lines schedule significant maintenance work during port calls for precisely this reason.

Current Sailing Details And Itinerary

The affected sailing embarked from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on 26th July 2026, offering passengers a unique itinerary that includes several popular destinations. The ship had already completed a port call in Port Canaveral, Florida, on 28th July before arriving in Nassau for the maintenance work.

Following the Nassau stop, Oasis of the Seas was scheduled to visit Royal Caribbean’s private island destination, CocoCay, on 30th July. The voyage was set to conclude with the ship’s return to Cape Liberty on 2nd August, completing the week-long cruise.

This particular itinerary showcases the versatility of Oasis of the Seas, which typically operates from various homeports throughout the year. The 2009-launched vessel remains one of Royal Caribbean’s most popular ships despite being over fifteen years old, continuing to attract thousands of passengers on every voyage.

Reports Suggest Recurring Plumbing Challenges

Whilst plumbing malfunctions are not necessarily a daily occurrence aboard the massive vessel, passenger reports suggest that Oasis of the Seas has experienced similar issues in recent weeks and months. Though not officially confirmed by Royal Caribbean, one passenger indicated that the ship faced comparable problems during the previous sailing.

Oasis of the Seas pool deck

“Last week Oasis of the Seas experienced an emergency shut down of all water resulting in not just water but no operating toilets for several hours. Today they appear to still have issues with that same problem,” the cruiser wrote on social media. This would have occurred during the 7-night Eastern Caribbean voyage that embarked on 19th July.

Additional passenger accounts paint a picture of ongoing challenges with the vessel’s plumbing infrastructure. Another guest who sailed aboard Oasis of the Seas in November 2025 reported experiencing issues throughout their voyage.

“Someone posted in here last week about the plumbing backups and shutoffs and got absolutely destroyed for daring to mention that the ship was having plumbing issues. They were right,” the guest shared on Facebook, defending earlier reports that had been dismissed by other passengers.

The same passenger provided specific details about the problems they encountered: “Not sure what the issue is, but there’s been issues all week on some floors and in public bathrooms. The promenade smells like a port-o-potty at the moment. Won’t stop me from coming back on her but it’s clearly a problem.”

Understanding Vacuum Plumbing Systems On Cruise Ships

Modern cruise ships utilize sophisticated vacuum plumbing systems that differ significantly from traditional gravity-based systems found in most buildings ashore. These systems use vacuum pressure to transport waste through smaller-diameter pipes, making them ideal for the complex layout and space constraints of a cruise ship.

The vacuum system aboard a vessel the size of Oasis of the Seas represents a marvel of marine engineering, handling waste from thousands of passengers and crew members across multiple decks. The system must operate continuously and reliably, making regular maintenance absolutely essential.

When maintenance is required, the entire system typically must be taken offline simultaneously, as the vacuum pressure needs to be consistent throughout the network. This explains why Royal Caribbean could not simply repair sections of the system whilst keeping others operational.

The complexity of these systems means that even minor issues can cascade into larger problems if not addressed promptly. Preventative maintenance, such as the work performed on 29th July, helps avoid more serious breakdowns that could affect passengers for extended periods.

Passenger Behaviour And Plumbing System Strain

Cruise lines consistently emphasise that passenger behaviour plays a significant role in maintaining plumbing system health. Items that should never be flushed include wet wipes, feminine hygiene products, paper towels, and even certain brands of toilet paper not provided by the cruise line.

Royal Caribbean works diligently to maintain its ships in optimal condition, but managing the behaviour of thousands of passengers simultaneously presents ongoing challenges. With up to 5,602 guests aboard Oasis of the Seas at maximum capacity, even a small percentage of passengers misusing facilities can create significant problems.

Industry-wide incidents demonstrate this challenge extends beyond Royal Caribbean. Cruise Hive reported that a single passenger’s mistake shut down the flushing system aboard MSC Cruises’ MSC Meraviglia in March 2026, affecting all guests aboard that vessel.

Carnival Cruise Line has issued repeated reminders to passengers about proper toilet usage, specifically emphasising that only the cruise line-provided toilet paper should be flushed. Even different brands of toilet paper or products marketed as “flushable” can cause blockages in marine sanitation systems.

Oasis Of The Seas Fleet Position And Specifications

Oasis of the Seas holds a special place in Royal Caribbean’s fleet as the inaugural ship of the groundbreaking Oasis class, which revolutionized cruise ship design when the vessel launched in 2009. At the time of her debut, she was the largest cruise ship in the world, a title the class has expanded upon with subsequent ships.

The 226,838-gross ton vessel measures 1,187 feet in length and accommodates up to 5,602 passengers at maximum capacity, with additional berths available in select staterooms. The ship features seven distinct neighbourhoods, including the innovative Central Park and Boardwalk areas that brought outdoor spaces to unprecedented prominence in cruise ship design.

Despite being over fifteen years old, Oasis of the Seas underwent a significant refurbishment as part of Royal Caribbean’s Royal Amplified program, which modernized many aspects of the ship whilst retaining the revolutionary features that made the class famous. These updates help maintain the vessel’s competitive position against newer ships in the fleet.

The ship’s complex infrastructure includes miles of plumbing pipes, electrical wiring, and mechanical systems that require constant maintenance and occasional major repairs. With a vessel of this size and age, scheduled maintenance becomes increasingly important to prevent unexpected breakdowns that could significantly impact passenger experience.

Industry Standards For Shipboard Maintenance Transparency

Royal Caribbean’s decision to proactively communicate the maintenance schedule to passengers reflects evolving industry standards regarding transparency. Cruise lines increasingly recognize that passengers appreciate honest communication about operational issues rather than attempting to minimize or hide maintenance requirements.

The letter distributed to passengers aboard Oasis of the Seas provided specific timeframes and clear explanations for why the work was necessary, allowing guests to plan accordingly. This approach helps manage expectations and reduces frustration compared to unexpected service interruptions.

Many cruise lines now include maintenance schedules in their daily programmes when work might affect passenger experience, particularly when it involves high-impact systems like plumbing, air conditioning, or power generation. This transparency has generally been well-received by passengers who understand that proper maintenance ultimately ensures their safety and comfort.

The industry has learned from past incidents where poor communication about maintenance or mechanical issues led to significant passenger dissatisfaction and negative publicity. Whilst no one enjoys having facilities temporarily unavailable, most passengers understand and accept the necessity when properly informed.

Looking forward, Royal Caribbean and other major cruise lines continue investing in predictive maintenance technologies that can identify potential problems before they require emergency repairs. These systems use sensors and data analysis to monitor equipment performance, allowing maintenance to be scheduled during optimal times with minimal passenger impact.

Veteran Carnival Cruise Director Todd Evans Leaves After 16 Years

Todd Evans, one of Carnival Cruise Line’s most recognisable cruise directors, has announced his unexpected departure from the cruise line after 16 years of service. The New York native, known affectionately to fans as “T-O-Double-D on the M-I-C”, revealed the news through social media on 22nd July 2026, marking the end of a career that began in October 2009.

Todd Evans Carnival

Evans’ announcement comes amid what appears to be a notable reshuffle amongst Carnival’s cruise director roster, with several high-profile departures occurring in recent months. His sudden exit has left fans and colleagues surprised, particularly as he was scheduled to begin a new contract aboard Carnival Sunshine in late October.

Career Spanning Multiple Ships And Roles

Evans’ journey with Carnival Cruise Line began in October 2009, when he joined as a singer and Playlist Performer. His unique energy and performance talents quickly made him a standout amongst the entertainment team, allowing him to showcase his abilities across the fleet.

Over his 16-year tenure, Evans progressed through various entertainment positions before eventually taking on the prestigious role of cruise director. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing all onboard entertainment, activities, and guest engagement – a role that requires exceptional charisma, organisational skills, and stamina.

TODD EVANS

Throughout his career as a cruise director, Evans has served multiple contracts aboard Carnival Freedom, where he became particularly well-known amongst regular guests. He also rotated through other vessels in the Carnival fleet, bringing his distinctive style and personality to thousands of passengers across different ships and itineraries.

Most Recent Assignment Aboard Carnival Freedom

Evans’ most recent contract saw him serving as cruise director aboard Carnival Freedom from 8th November 2025 through 14th March 2026. The 110,000-gross-tonne vessel, which entered service in 2007, operates year-round Caribbean itineraries and can accommodate 2,974 passengers at double occupancy.

During this period, Evans continued to build his reputation as one of the line’s most engaging and entertaining cruise directors. His signature introduction – “T-O-Double-D on the M-I-C” – became a familiar and beloved refrain for guests sailing aboard Freedom, creating an immediate connection and setting the tone for the onboard atmosphere.

Carnival Freedom sails primarily seven-day Caribbean voyages from Port Canaveral, Florida, visiting destinations throughout the Eastern and Western Caribbean. The ship underwent a significant refurbishment in 2018 as part of Carnival’s fleet enhancement programme, adding popular features such as Guy’s Burger Joint, the RedFrog Rum Bar, and an expanded WaterWorks aqua park.

Scheduled Carnival Sunshine Contract Cancelled

Following his assignment on Carnival Freedom, Evans was scheduled to serve as cruise director aboard Carnival Sunshine from 31st October 2026 through 9th January 2027. However, this assignment has now been removed from the cruise line’s scheduling system, with no explanation provided for the cancellation.

The 102,853-gross-tonne Carnival Sunshine, which can carry 3,002 passengers, operates a variety of itineraries from different homeports throughout the year. The vessel originally entered service in 1996 as Carnival Destiny and underwent a massive $155 million transformation in 2013, emerging as Carnival Sunshine with enhanced dining venues, entertainment spaces, and accommodations.

Alex Siegler, another cruise director within the Carnival fleet, will now cover part of Evans’ originally scheduled period aboard Carnival Sunshine. However, the remainder of the assignment has not yet been filled, suggesting the cruise line is still working to finalise its cruise director rotation for that vessel.

This sudden scheduling change has prompted speculation amongst cruise enthusiasts about whether Evans’ departure was planned or unexpected, though neither the cruise director nor Carnival Cruise Line has provided specific details about the circumstances.

Social Media Announcement Reflects On Memorable Career

In his social media announcement, Evans reflected emotionally on his time with Carnival Cruise Line, highlighting the personal and professional relationships that defined his experience. “16 years. Countless memories. Beautiful friendships that became family. And the incredible privilege of entertaining the world at sea,” he wrote, setting a nostalgic and appreciative tone.

The cruise director expressed gratitude to guests, friends, and colleagues who made his tenure with Carnival special. His message suggested that whilst he is moving on from the cruise line, he looks back on his time aboard with fondness and appreciation for the opportunities he received.

Evans made clear that his departure from Carnival does not signal an end to his entertainment career. “It’s simply time for the next chapter and to step up to the next level,” he explained, suggesting that new opportunities await beyond the cruise industry.

Whilst he did not provide extensive details about his future plans, Evans mentioned event planning as a possible new business venture. This aligns with the skills he developed as a cruise director, where organising events, coordinating entertainment, and managing guest experiences were central responsibilities.

No Official Reason Given For Departure

Neither Evans nor Carnival Cruise Line has provided an official explanation for the cruise director’s departure. This lack of detail has left fans and industry observers to speculate about whether the parting was voluntary or involved other circumstances.

The timing of the announcement – coming after his most recent contract ended but before his next assignment was set to begin – suggests the decision may have been made relatively recently. The cancellation of his Carnival Sunshine contract further indicates that the separation occurred during the planning stages for his next rotation.

As is standard practice in the cruise industry, Carnival Cruise Line has not issued any public statement regarding Evans’ departure. Major cruise lines typically do not comment on individual employment matters, whether related to cruise directors or other staff members, citing privacy and professional courtesy.

This silence is consistent with how the company has handled other recent cruise director departures, leaving former employees to share what information they choose through their own channels.

Part Of Broader Cruise Director Turnover

Evans’ departure is part of what appears to be a notable period of turnover amongst Carnival Cruise Line’s cruise director ranks. Earlier in July 2026, popular cruise director Gabby Gamboa also announced her unexpected departure from the cruise line shortly before a scheduled contract was set to begin.

Gamboa’s announcement similarly lacked specific details about the reasons for her departure, though she made cryptic comments suggesting that giving her “heart and soul” was “not enough” in relation to her leaving. This phrasing prompted speculation about whether her departure was entirely voluntary or involved performance or other workplace issues.

The near-simultaneous timing of these departures has raised questions within the cruise community about whether Carnival is undergoing a deliberate restructuring of its entertainment leadership or whether these are simply coincidental individual decisions.

Cruise directors hold highly visible positions that significantly impact the guest experience, making their departures more noticeable than those of other crew members. When multiple well-known cruise directors leave within a short timeframe, it naturally draws attention and speculation.

The Demanding Nature Of Cruise Director Roles

Working as a cruise director is widely recognised as one of the most challenging positions within the cruise ship hierarchy. The role demands exceptional stamina, as cruise directors typically work extraordinarily long days that often extend late into the evening and sometimes through the night.

Cruise directors are responsible for overseeing all onboard entertainment and activities, from morning fitness classes to evening shows and late-night parties. They must maintain high energy and enthusiasm throughout, serving as the face of the cruise line and setting the tone for the entire guest experience.

The position also requires months at sea away from family members and friends, with contracts typically lasting several months before crew members receive time off. This extended separation can take a significant emotional toll, particularly on those with families or long-term relationships ashore.

Beyond the physical and emotional demands, cruise directors face constant pressure to maintain high guest satisfaction scores, manage diverse teams of entertainment staff, adapt to unexpected situations, and represent the cruise line’s brand standards at all times.

How Cruise Lines Evaluate Cruise Director Performance

Whilst cruise lines do not publicly discuss their evaluation processes, industry insiders indicate that cruise director performance is assessed through multiple metrics. Guest feedback, collected through post-cruise surveys and comment cards, plays a significant role in determining whether cruise directors receive future contract renewals and premium ship assignments.

Onboard participation rates in activities and events provide another measurable indicator of a cruise director’s effectiveness. Higher participation typically suggests that the cruise director has successfully engaged guests and created an appealing atmosphere of fun and excitement.

Regular evaluations by senior entertainment managers and ship officers also factor into performance assessments. These evaluations consider professionalism, teamwork, adherence to company policies, and the cruise director’s ability to handle challenging situations and guest complaints.

Corporate compliance, including proper execution of safety drills and adherence to entertainment budgets, represents yet another evaluation component. Cruise directors must balance creating memorable experiences with operating within the financial and regulatory parameters set by the cruise line.

Future Implications For Carnival’s Entertainment Programme

The departure of experienced cruise directors like Evans and Gamboa means Carnival Cruise Line will need to promote or recruit replacements to maintain its entertainment standards across the fleet. With 27 ships currently in service and more on order, the cruise line requires a substantial roster of qualified cruise directors to staff its vessels.

Carnival has historically developed cruise directors from within its entertainment department, promoting talented performers and assistant cruise directors who have demonstrated the necessary skills and personality. This internal development approach helps maintain consistency in the cruise line’s entertainment culture and brand identity.

However, losing veteran cruise directors with years of experience and established fan followings can impact the guest experience, at least in the short term. Regular cruisers who specifically enjoyed Evans’ or Gamboa’s style may be disappointed to find different cruise directors aboard their favourite ships.

The cruise line’s ability to seamlessly transition new cruise directors into these roles whilst maintaining high entertainment standards will be important for preserving guest satisfaction. Carnival has built its reputation on providing a fun, lively atmosphere – something that depends heavily on the skills and charisma of its cruise directors.

Water Pours Through Cabin Ceiling On Royal Caribbean’s Allure Of The Seas

A substantial water leak has flooded part of Deck 12 aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas after water began pouring through the ceiling of an inside cabin.

Video of the incident was shared on Instagram by a passenger who said the affected stateroom was next to their own. The footage appears to show a heavy and continuous flow of water entering the cabin from above and spreading across the floor.

Allure of the Seas Cabin Leak

According to the passenger, the leak occurred on 28th July. They said water also reached the surrounding hallway and nearby cabins, although it is not yet clear how many staterooms were affected in total.

The passenger also claimed those impacted were offered 50% off a future cruise as an apology. Royal Caribbean has not publicly confirmed the compensation or provided details about the cause of the leak.

Guests Report Flooding In Nearby Cabins

The scale of the water flow shown in the video suggests the leak was not limited to a small drip or isolated patch of damp.

Water can be seen entering the cabin rapidly, while the person who shared the footage said the corridor and surrounding rooms were also flooded. It remains unclear whether any guests were moved to alternative accommodation or whether personal belongings were damaged.

Cruise ships carry engineering and maintenance teams who are available around the clock to respond to plumbing failures, equipment faults and other technical problems. Pipes and water systems run through large sections of passenger decks, meaning a failure above one cabin can sometimes affect several nearby areas.

No information has been released about whether the leak involved a burst pipe, a plumbing connection or another onboard system.

Questions were also raised in the comments beneath the Instagram video, with some viewers suggesting the footage may have come from an earlier incident aboard the same ship in December 2024.

However, the person who shared the video rejected those claims and said this was a separate event which had happened the previous day.

Allure Of The Seas Previously Hit By Corridor Leak

Allure of the Seas was involved in another widely shared water incident in December 2024, when footage showed water pouring from the ceiling of a passenger corridor and pooling outside several cabin doors.

The exact cause was not officially disclosed at the time, although the footage appeared consistent with a pipe or plumbing failure above the ceiling panels.

Allure of the Seas

Guests later said the water flow was stopped, the area was cleaned and passengers in affected cabins were moved.

One passenger wrote: “update pipe stopped and leak being fixed and people moved right away to other rooms. RC does things right when nature rumbles.”

In a later update, the same guest said the situation had been dealt with that evening and praised Royal Caribbean’s response.

They added: “No loss or damage or anything like that to the people, so that’s really great about Royal Caribbean, they do take care of you right away.”

The December 2024 sailing continued without delay, with no reported impact on the ship’s wider itinerary.

There is currently no indication that the latest leak affected Allure of the Seas’ schedule or caused any broader operational disruption.

How To Stay Connected In France With An ESIM

Travel is arguably one of the most exciting things you can do. And when you’re lucky enough to travel to a place like France, with cities like Paris and Bordeaux just calling your name, you need to make sure you have a phone that can answer those calls. There is nothing more frustrating than planning the best day, only to leave your hotel or Airbnb and see that you’re not connected. You can’t remember the street name of that famous bakery, and you can’t find the boat schedule for the sunset cruise on the Seine. Running around for Wi-Fi seems time-consuming and pointless. But what can you do? Keep reading to find out.

The easiest solution to connection issues in France is going with an eSIM. Never heard of this? Well, it’s just like a SIM card; however, it’s digital, meaning that there is no physical SIM that you have to insert. Most modern devices are compatible with this option. You just need to make sure you find the right provider with the right deal, i.e., data and call options.

Why an eSIM Can Be Handy in France

If you want to stay connected, France is a destination where having mobile data can be particularly useful. There is a lot to see and discover in the country, and your phone can help you manage each stage of the journey.

Again, an eSIM removes one small practical task from the travel process because there is no physical card. Your phone stores the digital SIM profile instead. For example, https://travel.orange.com/en/buy-a-sim/offers/france offers eSIM plans with different data allowances and validity periods. Its available options are made for travelers looking for connectivity while visiting France. They often use partner networks to provide service, and this service can even reach you in the depths of the metro station; that’s how reliable it is.

But before purchasing anything, check your particular smartphone model. eSIM support is not available on every device and compatibility can depend on the exact model or market in which the phone was purchased.

How do you check this? Just go to your settings and you’ll see somewhere on your mobile data page that there’s an ‘eSIM’ activation option. Click on it and follow the instructions. You often need a different eSIM for different countries, so once you leave France, you will likely have to get a new one for your next place. Or you can look for an international eSIM if you want more flexibility.

How Should You Pick the Right Plan?

There is no single data plan that will suit every traveler. Someone visiting Paris for a few days may use their phone very differently from someone spending several weeks traveling around France.

That is why choosing an eSIM for travelers starts with thinking about your own habits. Will you mainly use maps, messaging and occasional searches? Or are you likely to upload lots of photos, watch videos and use data-heavy apps throughout the day? Are you just going to use your mobile data sporadically or do you plan on uploading to social media all day?

Your needs will determine the eSIM for travelers that you need.

Get Your eSIM Ready Before You Leave

One of the easiest ways to make an eSIM work for you is to arrange it before your journey begins. This ensures you have mobile data abroad. Doing so means you can focus on getting around once you arrive instead of trying to sort out mobile connectivity at the airport or elsewhere.

It also means you can rest assured that once you land in France, you can immediately connect. There is nothing worse than landing, seeing the text message pop up that says “Welcome to France” and then not being able to book a taxi or check the metro times because you first need to connect to dodgy airport Wi-Fi to download your eSIM. You need an internet connection to install a travel eSIM.

A few simple travel eSIM tips can make the setup much smoother:

  • Check your phone’s eSIM compatibility before purchasing.
  • Install the eSIM while connected to reliable Wi-Fi.
  • Keep the activation instructions somewhere easy to access.
  • Check which SIM is selected for mobile data.
  • Review your roaming settings before using the connection.
  • Keep your regular SIM active if you still want access to your usual number.

Use Your Data Wisely While Traveling

Once you are in France, there are countless ways your phone can make the journey easier. Navigation is an obvious example but you may also use mobile data to check restaurant menus, look up attractions, translate text, confirm reservations or check train information.

Depending on the plan and device, hotspot functionality can provide another useful option. For longer journeys, it is also worth checking whether your chosen service allows you to add more data or extend the validity period.

All in all, having a connection on your trip to France is very much worth it. So plan ahead and get the right one.

Drunk Carnival Cruise Passenger Arrested and Accused of Hitting Kids

A cruise passenger was arrested this week after being accused of hitting children on a Carnival cruise ship during a weekend sailing out of Port Canaveral.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) said the intoxicated passenger, a 44-year old man by the name of David Crosby, is accused of hitting children in the face and stomach during a game of tag on Carnival Glory.

WESH reported that one child suffered a bloody lip and head pain, while another suffered stomach pain.

Security cameras on the Carnival cruise ship recorded the incident as the children were running down the hallway of the vessel. The BCSO said that Crosby stopped running during the game of tag, and that’s when he struck the two kids.

The warrant for Crosby’s arrest said that he did not remember the incident due to him being “heavily intoxicated”. The report also did not state if Crosby was related to the children or not.

Crosby, who lives in Surrency, Georgia, was held on $20,000 bond and charged with child abuse WO great bodily harm, simple assault. A court date has been set for August 25, 2026.

The booking details on Brevard County Sheriff’s Office’s website says that Crosby was released yesterday on July 28, 2026.

MSC’s sailings to Alaska in 2028 will visit the following ports:

MSC Reportedly Considering European River Cruise Expansion Through Explora Journeys

MSC Group could become the latest major cruise company to enter Europe’s growing river cruise market, with a new report suggesting the company is evaluating a move through its luxury brand, Explora Journeys.

Danube River Cruise

The suggestion comes from Italian maritime publication Shipping Italy, which reports that MSC Group is assessing the possibility of launching European river cruises under the Explora Journeys brand. However, it is important to stress that the plans remain speculative at this stage, with MSC Group yet to make any official announcement or confirm that a project is moving forward.

According to the report, the proposal is still under evaluation. No ship orders have been announced, no launch timeline has been revealed and there are no confirmed details on the size or design of any potential vessels.

If the project progresses, Explora Journeys would expand beyond luxury ocean cruising and enter a market currently dominated by established river cruise operators including Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Scenic.

River Cruise Market Continues To Attract Major Cruise Lines

The reported discussions come as more ocean cruise companies look to expand into river cruising, attracted by continued demand for sailings along Europe’s most popular waterways.

Rhine Gorge Cruise

One of the biggest recent developments came from Celebrity Cruises, which announced Celebrity River Cruises earlier this year. The new premium river cruise brand is scheduled to debut in 2027, with bookings expected to open in the coming months. Celebrity has already confirmed an initial order for 10 river ships, signalling a significant long-term investment in the sector.

If MSC Group ultimately decides to proceed with its own plans, it would represent another major cruise company diversifying beyond traditional ocean itineraries to offer guests a different style of holiday focused on inland waterways and historic city centres.

While the Shipping Italy report suggests any future deployment would focus on Europe’s best-known rivers, no specific itineraries or destinations have been identified.

Explora Journeys Continues Luxury Growth

The reported river cruise evaluation would fit with MSC Group’s broader investment in its luxury cruise business.

Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys has been steadily expanding its ocean-going fleet since launching in 2023. Explora III is due to enter service in 2026, with further luxury ships already planned through 2028 as the brand continues to grow its presence in the premium and luxury cruise market.

For now, though, any move into river cruising remains only a possibility. Until MSC Group or Explora Journeys officially confirms the project, the reported plans should be viewed as an early-stage suggestion rather than a confirmed expansion.
