10 Reasons to Cruise with Star Clippers

Dreaming of a holiday that combines the romance of traditional sailing with the comfort of modern luxury?

Look no further than Star Clippers, a unique cruise line that offers an unparalleled sailing experience on some of the world’s most impressive tall ships.

I was lucky enough to be invited to sail on Star Clippers’ flagship, Royal Clipper. Here are ten reasons why I think this is a cruise line to consider for your next voyage…

Star Clippers Ships

1. Sail on the World’s Largest Tall Ships

Star Clippers boasts an impressive fleet of vessels that will take your breath away.

The crown jewel of their collection is the Royal Clipper, recognised by the Guiness Book of Records as the largest fully-rigged sailing ship in the world. This magnificent vessel is a sight to behold, with its towering masts and intricate rigging system that harkens back to the golden age of sail.

The design of Star Clippers’ ships is a masterful blend of traditional sailing aesthetics and modern engineering. As you approach these majestic vessels, you’ll be struck by their sleek lines and gleaming woodwork. The multiple masts, adorned with both staysails and square sails, create a silhouette that stands out dramatically against the horizon.

2. Experience Authentic Sailing Adventures

One of the most thrilling aspects of cruising with Star Clippers is the opportunity to experience genuine sailing. These ships aren’t just for show; they’re designed to harness the power of the wind and provide passengers with a true sailing adventure.

The ships feature both staysails and square sails, managed by an advanced roller-furling system that allows for efficient sail handling. This means that, weather permitting, you’ll spend a significant portion of your journey under sail power alone.

There’s nothing quite like the moment when the engines are cut, and the ship surges forward powered only by the wind filling its sails. You’ll feel a connection to the sea and the elements that’s simply not possible on a traditional cruise ship.

3. Enjoy Intimate and Exclusive Cruising

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer size and crowded nature of large cruise ships, you’ll appreciate the intimate atmosphere on a Star Clippers cruise. With a much smaller passenger capacity compared to traditional cruise liners, these ships offer a more personal and exclusive experience.

The Royal Clipper, for instance, accommodates just 227 passengers, a far cry from the thousands you might find on a mega-ship. This smaller scale means you’ll never feel lost in the crowd. You’ll have the opportunity to get to know your fellow passengers and the crew, fostering a sense of community that’s often missing on larger ships.

This intimate setting also provides a unique opportunity to meet interesting people from various countries. Whether you’re sharing stories over dinner or discussing the day’s adventures on deck, you’re sure to make lasting connections with like-minded adventurers from around the world.

4. Access Unique Ports and Destinations

One of the significant advantages of Star Clippers’ smaller ships is their ability to access ports and destinations that are off-limits to larger cruise liners. This means you’ll have the opportunity to explore lesser-known gems and avoid the crowds often associated with popular cruise destinations.

Star Clippers tender boat

Star Clippers’ tender boats are able to sail right onto the beach. So with your ship anchored off-shore, there’s really no limit to the size of the post you can visit, whether it’s a large port like Civitavecchia (for Rome) or a tiny island in Southeast Asia.

Star Clippers’ itineraries often include a mix of well-known locations and hidden treasures. Whether you’re cruising the Caribbean, exploring the Mediterranean, or venturing to exotic destinations, you’ll enjoy a unique perspective on both famous landmarks and off-the-beaten-path locales.

5. Indulge in Luxurious Amenities

While Star Clippers offers an authentic sailing experience, it doesn’t skimp on luxury. These ships seamlessly blend the charm of traditional sailing vessels with the comfort and amenities of a modern luxury cruise.

On board, you’ll find a range of facilities designed to enhance your comfort and enjoyment. The Royal Clipper, for instance, boasts a unique water sports marina at the stern. This platform can be lowered to sea level, providing easy access for swimming, snorkelling, and other water activities right from the ship.

Other amenities might include multiple swimming pools, a spa for indulgent treatments, well-stocked libraries for quiet relaxation, and comfortable lounges for socialising.

The cabins, while maintaining a nautical charm, are equipped with modern conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay.

It’s worth noting that while these ships offer luxury, they do so in a way that’s in keeping with the sailing ship aesthetic.

Don’t expect the flashy, over-the-top amenities you might find on mega-ships. There are no crystal staircases here! Instead, Star Clippers provides a more refined, understated luxury that complements the authentic sailing experience.

6. Savour Gourmet Dining Experiences

Dining is an essential part of any cruise experience, and Star Clippers doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Despite the smaller size of the ships, the quality of the culinary offerings is top-notch.

Food on Star Clippers

Typically, Star Clippers ships feature a single main dining venue, creating an intimate and sociable atmosphere for meals. This setup encourages passengers to mingle and share stories of their day’s adventures over exquisite meals.

The menus on Star Clippers cruises are crafted to reflect the destinations you’re visiting, often incorporating local flavours and ingredients. You can expect a range of international cuisines. Fresh seafood is often a highlight, given the nautical setting.

Star Clippers cruises are ideal for those with any kind of special dietary requirement. As a vegan, I was made a special menu just for me each evening. And when it came to the breakfast and lunch buffet, a crew member was always available to greet me personally and show me which options were suitable.

Royal Clipper buffet

While the dining options may be more limited compared to larger ships with multiple restaurants, the focus is on quality rather than quantity.

The intimate dining setting, combined with the high standard of cuisine, creates a memorable gastronomic experience that’s an integral part of your Star Clippers adventure.

7. Participate in Unique Onboard Activities

Star Clippers offers a range of unique onboard activities that you won’t find on typical cruise ships. These activities are designed to enhance your sailing experience and provide unforgettable memories.

One of the most thrilling activities is the opportunity to climb the mast. Under the supervision of crew members, you can ascend the rigging for a bird’s eye view of the ship and the surrounding sea. It’s an exhilarating experience that gives you a true sailor’s perspective.

For a more relaxed activity, you can lounge in the bowsprit netting, suspended over the waves at the very front of the ship. It’s a perfect spot for sunbathing or watching for marine life.

Bowspirit net

Star Clippers also offers educational opportunities that align with the sailing theme. You might have the chance to attend navigation classes, learning the basics of plotting a course using traditional methods.

In the evenings, star gazing sessions take advantage of the clear skies away from light pollution, allowing you to marvel at constellations and learn about celestial navigation.

These unique activities contribute to the overall sailing experience, allowing you to be as involved or as relaxed as you choose during your journey.

8. Enjoy Attentive and Professional Service

The smaller size of Star Clippers’ ships allows for a more personalised level of service. With a lower guest-to-crew ratio compared to larger cruise ships, you can expect attentive and professional service throughout your journey.

The intimate nature of the ship means that crew members can get to know passengers individually, often anticipating needs and preferences.

The crew on Star Clippers ships are not just there to provide service; they’re an integral part of the sailing experience. Many crew members are skilled sailors, and their passion for the sea often shines through in their interactions with passengers.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself chatting with crew members about sailing techniques or the ship’s impressive rigging system!

I spent a good ten minutes chatting to the barman who made me a cocktail, because nobody else was at the bar. The said he loves how he’s able to chat to the guests and that it was never possible when he worked on the big cruise ships as there was no time.

9. Experience a Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

A Star Clippers cruise offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. For those seeking excitement, the authentic sailing experience provides plenty of thrills. You can get involved in sailing activities, participate in water sports, or explore exciting ports of call.

Calvi

On the other hand, if relaxation is more your style, there are ample opportunities for that too. You can lounge by the pool, soak up the sun on deck, or find a quiet corner to read a book from the ship’s library. The gentle motion of the ship and the sound of the waves create a naturally soothing environment.

Sun loungers on deck

Many passengers find that the pace of life on a Star Clippers cruise is more relaxed compared to larger ships. There’s less pressure to participate in constant activities or stick to rigid schedules.

Instead, you’re free to shape your day as you see fit, whether that means joining in on sailing activities or simply watching the world go by from a comfortable deck chair. Whether you’re an active adventurer or a dedicated sun-seeker, you’ll find your perfect balance on board.

10. Benefit from Excellent Value for Money

While Star Clippers cruises may seem expensive at first glance, they offer excellent value for money when you consider the unique experiences they provide.

Compared to other luxury cruise lines, Star Clippers often comes in at a competitive price point, especially when you factor in the exclusive nature of the sailing experience.

I was shocked at how cheap the drinks are onboard. A glass of wine or beer is just €3.50 and fancy frozen cocktails are €7.

Star Clippers cocktail menu

If you wish to offer a gratuity, the suggested about is €8 per night, which is around half of the average on a standard cruise ship.

It’s important to remember that the value of a Star Clippers cruise goes beyond just the price tag. The authentic sailing experience, access to unique ports, intimate atmosphere, and personalised service all contribute to creating unforgettable memories that are, in many ways, priceless.

The Bottom Line

A Star Clippers cruise offers a truly unique way to explore the world. From the thrill of sailing on the world’s largest tall ships to the intimate and luxurious on-board experience, there are countless reasons to choose Star Clippers for your next holiday.

Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or simply looking for a cruise experience that’s a cut above the ordinary, Star Clippers provides an adventure that combines the romance of the past with the comforts of the present.

So why not set sail on a journey that promises not just a holiday, but a genuine maritime adventure?

Four Passengers Arrested Upon Disembarking Their Cruise, Accused Of Major Fraud

Four passengers have been arrested at the end of their MSC cruise, accused of a major credit card fraud scheme.

MSC Magnifica

Michael F. Emmanuel, Tyrisha Delgado (both from Boston), Devin Jones, and Quentin Marcellus Tuck (both from Beaumont, Texas) were all arrested when disembarking MSC Magnifica in Miami.

They were accused of trying to make large cash withdrawals at the onboard casino using fraudulent credit cards.

The onboard security team on the ship detected suspicious activity from the passengers, and alerted US Customs and Border Protection, who then ran a deeper investigation into the transactions.

This revealed that the three credit cards registered by the guests for the cruise were all flagged for being fraudulent. Later searches of the guests’ belongings, after their arrest, revealed evidence of an organised fraud scheme.

The four were arrested with a $2,500 bond. They have all pleaded not guilty and requested a trial by jury.

Cruise fraud cases such as this are not unheard of. In November 2023 four guests onboard Carnival Celebration were arrested for using stolen credit card information.

And on another cruise earlier in 2023, a woman was arrested after a cruise on Oasis of the Seas where she used eight stolen cards to spend over $22,000 onboard.

Disney Takes Decision To Skip Amsterdam Due To Ongoing Protest Issues

Disney Cruise Line has made the proactive decision to skip Amsterdam on an upcoming cruise itinerary, due to the ongoing protests in the city.

Disney Dream has a 7-night sailing departing 1st September 2024 that would’ve included a call at the capital of the Netherlands, but now instead she will have an extended overnight stay at Zeebrugge in Belgium.

The cause is the protests by Extinction Rebellion that have impacted several cruise ships in recent weeks, causing long delays for passengers.

“Due to issues outside of our control at the port in Amsterdam, there is a significant possibility that the ship will not be able to dock, resulting in a missed port day.

“Because of this, we have made the decision to modify your sailing and spend the additional day in Zeebrugge.”

Disney Cruise Line letter to guests

Royal Caribbean and Ambassador Cruise Line have recently tried to avoid issues with the protestors by cancelling other ports or cutting short cruises to return to Amsterdam early, but both still suffered delays.

The protests are being led by Extinction Rebellion, who claim that cruise ships are damaging the port city and the wider world.

Disney Cruise Line has probably acted wisely in avoiding the port altogether, and it remains to be seen whether other visits to the Dutch capital from other cruise lines will also be cancelled in the short term.

Cruise Ships To Continue To Call At Alaskan Port Devastated By Landslide Tragedy

Cruise lines have confirmed they currently have no plans to remove the port of Ketchikan from cruise itineraries, despite the tragic landslide at the port which killed a local resident.

NCL ship in Ketchikan, Alaska

The landslide occurred on 25th August 2024 and damaged several homes in the community as well as taking the life of one resident, and injuring three others.

The town is a popular cruise port for guests on Alaskan cruises, and social media saw several debates around whether cruise ships should continue to visit as the community mourned and struggled with the damage of the landslide.

Several argued that ships should skip the port, and allow the residents time to recover. Others argued that the town relies on tourism and that several local business owners would be hit hard if ships didn’t visit the port.

So far, Norwegian Cruise Line and the Carnival Group (Carnival, Holland America and Princess for Alaska cruises) have confirmed that, following discussions with the local authorities in Ketchikan, the ships will continue to sail to the port.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Ketchikan impacted by the tragic landslide. Ketchikan is a valued partner for our Alaska vacations, and our cruise lines are working directly with the borough government on how we can best help as well as any changes we should make in our planned visits.

“Based on that consultation, there is no change in our scheduled calls. However, it is likely that some planned shore excursions will change or be cancelled, and we are communicating directly with our guests on any changes. All decisions will prioritize the safety of our guests and team members as well assuring we are not impeding any ongoing recovery or repair efforts in Ketchikan.“

Carnival Group statement

It’s not clear what caused the latest landslide and the Ketchikan mayor has confirmed they’re working with specialists to identify the causes of increased landslides in recent times.

In November 2023, a landslide in nearby Wrangell tragically took four lives. Landslides in Alaska that result in loss of life or injury are extremely rare, but they often cause problems for businesses and can block major roads too.

Tips For Reducing Your Waste On A Cruise And When You Return To Panama City

Cruising is one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the world, offering the luxury of travel combined with the relaxation of a floating resort. However, with the growing awareness of environmental issues, many travelers seek ways to make their voyages more sustainable. The ocean’s beauty, coupled with the impact of pollution, calls for responsible cruising practices.

Whether you’re about to set sail or just returning from a cruise to Panama City, there are numerous ways to reduce waste and minimize your environmental footprint. This guide will walk you through practical tips on how to stay eco-friendly both during your cruise and when you return to shore, with resources like Panama City roll-off dumpster rentals to help you manage your waste responsibly.

Reducing Waste on Your Cruise

It is relatively complex to recognize your effects on the environment when you are on a cruise. Being on a train or a bus is very convenient, and this often means that you produce a lot of waste that harms the environment, but if you are a little careful, you can prevent this.

Start by packing wisely. Consumers should consider using reusable ones to avoid wasting plastics, such as water bottles, coffee mugs, and shopping bags. Some of these small items include reusable water bottles, utensils, bags, and containers, which can assist you in keeping off single-use plastics, which are a leading cause of pollution in our oceans. Some of the things that are now available on most cruises include water refill stations. For this, it is advisable to have your water in these stations rather than buying bottled water.

Another aspect that can be reduced when it comes to cruising is Eating and Drinking. While it is always tempting to help yourself from the big plates at functions like buffets, it creates food waste. It is also essential to respect portion sizes and not overfill your plate with food you cannot possibly finish. Despite these, some companies are trying to address this problem by providing guests with options for smaller serving sizes or plates or by ensuring they only consume what they can consume during their cruise. Such initiatives can use support, and making a difference can be as simple as just showing up.

Cruise ships produce large amounts of waste, including packaging material and the things passengers have thrown away. As for recyclable items, if your chosen cruise line accepts them, do not hesitate to use these services. Pack a small bag for recyclables in your cabin and ensure the items are correctly sorted per the ship’s instructions. Some cruise lines also provide an option for recycling something not so commonly recyclable, such as batteries or electronics, so do not hesitate to inquire about their services.

When going for the products you require in your care, try to look for eco-friendly ones. Most regular toiletries such as body wash, shampoo, and conditioner have microplastic or toxic substances that could reach the sea. Use natural soaps, shampoos, and sunscreen since they are more environmentally friendly and have fewer negative impacts on your skin. Furthermore, do not use the tiny water bottles that are usually provided by the cruise; instead, use your travel bottles.

Another example is shopping onshore, which can be an excellent chance to turn to more sustainable practices. When purchasing souvenirs or snacks, choose items with the least amount of packaging or, even better, those made of recycled materials. Local souvenirs and fair trade products are also available in more environmentally friendly destinations.

Managing Waste After Your Cruise in Panama City

The last thing you want is to stop practicing the great habits of reducing waste once you get off your cruise and are back in Panama City. The amazing city, with its pristine sandy shorelines and friendly people, provides many alternatives for disposing of the waste produced during the cruise in an environmentally friendly manner.

If you already have a large volume of trash, including plastic-wrapped trinkets and mementoes, items that are no longer needed, Panama City roll-off dumpster rentals are ideal to hire. These services are useful in handling big volumes of waste in a way that does not pollute the area’s environment.

In Panama City, there are also many recycling locations where paper, glasses, and plastics can be taken. Most of these centers also collect electronics and hazardous waste, which are sometimes hard to recycle. When you segregate and recycle your waste, you are saving the city from increased pressure on the landfills to host your waste materials.

Conclusion

Cruising and sustainability are two concepts that are not entirely compatible with each other at first sight; simultaneously, one should admit that traveling aboard a luxurious ship with minimal negative impact on the environment is possible. It matters from only using reusable items when on board, promoting environmentally friendly practices, to properly disposing of their waste when they return to Panama City. Making good choices will ensure that you do not cause any harm to the seas and the places you visit, thus retaining the natural beauty that people want to see in the world.

Cruise Port Hit by Potential Cyber Attack that Also Impacted International Airport

Yesterday morning, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport announced on social media that a web systems outage was impacting both the cruise port and airport in Seattle.

Our free cruise newsletter offers the latest news and deals: Sign Up
Seattle cruise port with Princess and Holland America ships

The post on X stated that the cause of the outage was potentially a cyber attack.

“The Port of Seattle experienced certain system outages indicating a possible cyberattack. The Port isolated critical systems and is in the process of working to restore full service and do not have an estimated time for return,” the statement read.

At the time of the statement progress was being made to restore online systems, but there was no estimated time for return.

SEA Airport encouraged passengers to check-in online before arriving at the airport and to keep checking with their airline for up-to-date information about their flight.

Three cruise ships are scheduled to depart from Seattle today.  These ships include Majestic Princess, Norwegian Encore, and Holland America’s Westerdam.

At the time of the writing of this article the Port of Seattle website is still offline for many users trying to access the site.

The impacts of the alleged cyber attack seem to be carrying into the weekend but no recent updates have been made by the Seattle-Tacoma Intl. Airport account on X.

For travelers scheduled to fly out of Seattle on Sunday the account last posted this statement:

“If you are traveling Sunday, please check with your airline for travel information, use airline apps to get your boarding pass and bag tags online, and allow extra time to get to SEA and to your gate.“

If cruise lines face major problems during this outage they will attempt to contact guests about any delays or changes.

Royal Caribbean Announces Fourth Icon Ship

Royal Caribbean has confirmed that it has ordered a fourth of its record-breaking Icon-class ships, with potential for a fifth and sixth.

Icon of the Seas Sailing

The fourth Icon-class ship is due for delivery sometime in 2027, and will follow Star of the Seas in 2025 and a third, as-yet-unnamed ship in 2026.

The cruise line also confirmed that it has booked options for a fifth and sixth Icon-class ship – meaning the space is booked into the shipyard in advance, should the cruise line decide to go ahead.

Just as with the previous Icon-class ships, the fourth will be built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland.

“Building on the incredible momentum and market response to the launch of Icon of the Seas and the excitement for its sister ship, Star of the Seas, coming in 2025, we’re thrilled to join with Meyer Turku once again to expand our roster of Icon Class ships and continue our future growth plans.

“Since its debut, Icon has changed the game in vacation experiences and exceeded our expectations in both guest satisfaction and financial performance.”

Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty

Any new cruise ship will generate a buzz but the fact that Royal Caribbean is expanding the fleet with more ships that are the biggest in the world – just as it did with the prior Oasis-class – will excite loyal fans even more.

And of course, the fact that bigger ships continue to be built demonstrates the growing demand for cruises, with more capacity needed to keep up.

There are also rumours that Royal Caribbean may soon announce new smaller ships – currently with the rumoured name of the Discovery Class – to also cater for those who aren’t a fan of the giant super-ships such as Icon of the Seas and her sisters.

Royal Caribbean Ship Classes Comparison (With Chart)

With 27 cruise ships to choose from, selecting the best Royal Caribbean ship is no easy task. But, as Royal Caribbean groups its ships into classes, choosing the class of ship with the facilities that you want to experience is a great way to start your cruise planning.

In this guide, I’ll show you what to expect from each of Royal Caribbean’s ship classes. I’ve also made a handy chart so that you can compare the classes side-by-side.

Royal Caribbean Ship Classes

How many ship classes does Royal Caribbean have?

Royal Caribbean has 8 classes of cruise ships:

  1. Icon – Newest Royal Caribbean ships launched between 2024 and 2027
  2. Quantum Ultra – Ships launched between 2019 and 2021
  3. Quantum – Ships launched between 2014 and 2016
  4. Oasis – Ships launched between 2009 and 2028
  5. Freedom – Ships launched between 2006 and 2008
  6. Radiance – Ships launched between 2001 and 2004
  7. Voyager – Ships launched between 1999 and 2003
  8. Vision – Ships launched between 1996 and 1998

So, are the new Royal Caribbean ships better than the old ones? Well, not always. Each class of ships has its pros and cons. So, read on as I compare Royal Caribbean ships by class.

Summary of Royal Caribbean cruise ship classes:

  • Icon-class – The biggest ships in the world with so much to enjoy that you won’t have time to do it all
  • Quantum and Quantum Ultra-class – Modern, high-tech ships with the fanciest features like the North Star observation pod and the iFly skydiving simulator
  • Oasis-class – Formerly the largest ships, these are still absolutely packed with exciting activities
  • Freedom and Voyager-class – Slightly older ships, but some have been ‘amped’ to have extra features added
  • Radiance and Vision-class – The smallest ships with no fancy features that are best suited for destination-focused itineraries

Royal Caribbean Ships By Class

Each of the eight Royal Caribbean ship classes has between one and five ships in it. The ships within a class are ‘sister-ships’. This means that they’re all built to a very similar design, they have the same outer shell, if you will.

However, the ships in each class are not identical. They were each built to be slightly different. Then, between 2018 and 2020, some of the ships were ‘Amped’, which means that they had a thorough refurbishment and lots of extra facilities added.

List of Royal Caribbean ships in each class:

  • Icon – Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, at least two TBC
  • Quantum Ultra – Odyssey of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas
  • Quantum – Ovation of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas
  • Oasis – Utopia of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, one TBC
  • Freedom – Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas
  • Radiance – Jewel of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas
  • Voyager – Mariner of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas
  • Vision – Vision of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas

Royal Caribbean Ship Classes By Size

One key difference between the different classes of ships is the size. This is important as the largest of Royal Caribbean’s ships (Icon Class) are over three times the size of the smallest ships in the fleet (Vision Class).

Class Average Gross Tonnage
Icon 250,800
Oasis 228,000
Quantum Ultra 169,000
Quantum 169,000
Freedom 154,000
Voyager 138,000
Radiance 90,000
Vision 78,000

So is bigger better? Well, not always. Many people (myself included) love the Oasis-class ships because they have so much to do on board. There’s even a park in the middle with over 10,000 real plants and trees! And Icon of the Seas takes that even further with more amazing features.

However, the largest cruise ships are just too big to dock at some ports. So, if you want to go island hopping around Greece, for example, you’ll need a smaller ship.

Tickets for the smaller ships tend to be cheaper, and there are some real bargains to be had. If you don’t have kids and don’t want to do surfing, zip-lining and all of that, then there’s no point paying extra for a ship that has activities that you won’t take part in.

The Different Classes of Royal Caribbean Ships

Still not sure which class to pick? Here’s an overview of each of the Royal Caribbean ship classes…

Icon Class

Ships: Icon of the Seas (2024) Star of the Seas (2025) TBC (2026) TBC (2027) with potentially two more to be confirmed

Icon of the Seas

The Icon-class ships are the new biggest in the world, and have some of the most exciting attractions you would ever be able to enjoy at sea.

There are 8 neighborhoods dividing up the ship, including returning favourites like Central Park and Royal Promenade, along with 5 new ones. The Aquadome is host to the new enhanced AquaTheatre, while Thrill Island hosts six record-breaking waterslides.

Icon of the Seas can host 7,600 guests in total and has 28 different stateroom options to choose from, including new takes on family suites and inside staterooms. They’ve even completely overhauled the crew cabins too, so it’s not just guests getting the best experience possible.

Icon of the Seas is the first ship in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is the cleanest cruise ship fuel available. When coupled with Royal’s existing eco-friendly tech, it’s the most sustainable ship in the whole fleet.

Quantum & Quantum Ultra Class

Ships: Quantum of the Seas (2014), Anthem of the Seas (2015), Ovation of the Seas (2016), Spectrum of the Seas (2019), Odyssey of the Seas (2021)

Odyssey of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships are the most innovative of all. They have unique features like the North Star observation pod, the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator and bumper cars – all things that you simply won’t find on any other cruise ships in the world.

When Royal Caribbean began building Quantum-class ships, it was the first time that the line had ever decided to build ships smaller than those that had come before. Usually, cruise ships have gotten larger over the years. That said, Quantum-class ships are by no means small, most have space for 4,180 guests at double occupancy and 4,905 if every bed is full.

Quantum-class ships are ideal for cold weather sailings such as those out of New York or Southampton. There’s an indoor pool and lots o indoor activities to enjoy when you can’t sunbathe out on the open decks.

If you’re wondering what the difference is between Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class, the answer is not much. Quantum Ultra-class ships each have Sky Pad virtual reality trampolines on the back and the indoor pool has a retractable roof for sunnier days. There’s the addition of a Playmakers sports bar, a karaoke lounge and a tea room, but these come at the loss of the pub and teen disco.

Oasis Class

Ships: Oasis of the Seas (2009), Allure of the Seas (2010), Harmony of the Seas (2016), Symphony of the Seas (2018), Wonder of the Seas (2022), Utopia of the Seas (2024), TBC (2028)

Wonder of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships were the biggest in the world until Icon came along, with space for over 6,600 guests. These massive ships are so wide that they have a hollow centre where you’ll find the huge Central Park with thousands of plants, the Boardwalk complete with a carousel and a zip-line over the top of it all.

Most Oasis-class ships feature some of the tallest slides at sea, the 10-storey Ultimate Abyss, as well as loys of thrilling water slides. As well as ice skating, there is also a roller skating rink as well as the AquaTheater where you can watch the most spectacular high diving shows.

The oldest Oasis-class ship, Oasis of the Seas underwent a huge revamp in 2019. However, Allure of the Seas’ amplification has been delayed, so she’s missing some of the key features you can expect from the other Oasis-class ships in the fleet. You can read more about that here: Allure of the Seas Vs Oasis of the Seas.

Freedom Class

Ships: Freedom of the Seas (2006), Liberty of the Seas (2007), Independence of the Seas (2008)

Independence of the Seas

They may be a little older and a little smaller, but Freedom-class ships have plenty to enjoy. Refurbishments of these ships have seen the addition of lots of exciting features such as The Perfect Storm Waterslides, escape rooms and laser tag. Independence of the Seas also has the SkyPad trampolines.

While you won’t find any of the over-the-top activities that are unique to the Quantum and Oasis Classes, you can enjoy mini golf, basketball and ice skating as well as the things that all ships have like the casino, spa and swimming pools.

Radiance Class

Ships: Radiance of the Seas (2001), Brilliance of the Seas (2002), Serenade of the Seas (2003), Jewel of the Seas (2004)

Serenade of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Radiance-class ships are known for their views as they have lots of glass walls, glass elevators to outside and some wonderful viewing areas. As these ships can access smaller cruise ports, you’ll find some really interesting itineraries to places like the Panama Canal, Alaska, the Eastern Mediterranean and Australia.

Radiance-class ships are the only Royal Caribbean ships to have self-levelling pool tables – something that was quite special when these ships were launched in the early 2000s. You won’t find any waterslide on boards, but there are still some small slides for kids.

Voyager Class

Ships: Voyager of the Seas (1999), Explorer of the Seas (2000), Adventure of the Seas (2001), Navigator of the Seas (2002), Mariner of the Seas (2003)

Royal Caribbean Voyager Class

While they may be around 20 years old, Voyager Class ships still have a lot to offer, especially since these ships were amplified to add things like waterslides, laser tag and escape rooms.

The actual offerings vary by ship though, so you’ll want to check more closely if there’s a particular activity that you want to try. For example, when comparing Mariner of the Seas and Navigator of the Seas, you’ll see that one has virtual reality trampolines, whereas the other has a better pool deck with bigger waterslides.

While many areas on these ships are brand new, they can still feel a little dated, particularly in the staterooms and some of the bars.

Vision Class

Ships: Grandeur of the Seas (1996), Rhapsody of the Seas (1997), Enchantment of the Seas (1997), Vision of the Seas (1998)

Rhapsody of the Seas

The smallest and oldest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet, Vision-class ships shouldn’t be overlooked. If you don’t mind the lack of bells and whistles, you can find some great deals on cruises on these ships.

Like all Royal Caribbean ships, you can enjoy rock climbing walls, arcades, casinos, spas, pools and whirlpools. There’s also the Adventure Ocean kids club to keep your children entertained, making these ships a good choice for families and couples alike. Enchantment of the seas also has a bungee trampoline.

Cruises on Vision-class ships are often destination-focused, such as longer Caribbean cruises that explore some of the lesser-visited islands in the Southern Caribbean.

However, if you most look forward to visiting different destinations and relaxing with a cocktail, then the older and smaller ships will suit you just fine.

Remember, that not all ships in a class are identical, so be sure to take a good look at the deck plans and Royal Caribbean’s website to make sure that you know what you’re getting when it comes to booking your cruise.

If you’re planning to stay in a suite, you should also know that Royal Caribbean’s suite perks are a little better on the Icon Class, Oasis Class, Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class ships than they are on the older ships.

You should also take note of what’s included in a Royal Caribbean cruise as some of the activities do cost extra.

Carnival Vista’s Engine Troubles Continue With Itinerary Impacted Again

Carnival Vista continues to suffer delays due to ongoing engine problems, with a third itinerary within a month now impacted.

Carnival Vista

The ship has been undergoing repairs for several weeks now but is still cruising at the same time. At the peak of the issues earlier in August, this resulted in an entire itinerary being changed.

The problems have still not been rectified ahead of the latest 8-night cruise to the Caribbean, although the impact on guests is less severe.

The ship will, for now, continue to call at the planned ports including San Juan, Puerto Rico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.

However, the arrival times and length of time in each port will be impacted.

“We have been working hard to address an issue that was impacting the ship’s cruising speed. We were hopeful that the issue was resolved but we’re not quite there…

“We are working on a new plan to make some additional repairs. We will be able to keep the remaining ports of call on our itinerary but will make some modest adjustments to our time in port to allow us to return to Port Canaveral in good time.”

Carnival Vista captain Francesco Florentino, in a letter to guests

The ship was originally due to visit San Juan from 10.30 am until 6.30 pm. That will now be reduced with a new arrival time of 1.30 pm, although the departure has been pushed back by one hour to 7.30 pm.

The visit to St. Maarten has been shortened by an hour, with a delayed arrival time of 10 am, and no announced change to the departure time.

And while the ship is scheduled to arrive in St. Thomas on time, she will depart an hour early, to make sure she’s able to reach the homeport at Port Canaveral on time.

The cruise line is awarding guests a $50 onboard credit per stateroom as an apology, and is automatically adjusting any shore excursions booked through the cruise line.

The Most Shocking Tales of Rudeness on Cruise Ships

Cruising is often seen as a luxurious and relaxing way to travel, but unfortunately, not all passengers uphold the same standards of etiquette.

Most of the people I’ve encountered on a cruise have been absolutely lovely, but there are always a few who try to spoil it for the rest of us – either because they’re entitled, or just plain ignorant.

Two large cruise ships docked at a port under a clear blue sky. Passengers, visible as a group of diverse individuals including families and couples, are walking on the pier towards the ships. The scene captures a vibrant travel atmosphere, with the majestic cruise liners towering over the guests, symbolizing the start of a maritime adventure.

And I know it’s not just me who feels this way – so I asked my Facebook followers for stories of the worst manners they’d experienced on a cruise holiday.

This is what they came up with…

1. Unruly Children in the Dining Room

A group of children are in a cruise ship dining room. One boy stands on the table with his arms outstretched, while two other children watch with expressions of surprise and amusement. The dining room is filled with other diners in the background, enjoying their meals with a view of the ocean through the large windows.

Cruises are a lot more family-friendly than they used to be, and most people are fine with that, so long as the children are well-behaved.

People have told stories of children throwing food and cutlery around dining rooms, and even climbing on tables! It’s not so much the kids, but the parents that allow the behaviour, or don’t do enough to discourage it.

If you’re taking your kids on a cruise, absolutely let them have fun. But letting that fun doesn’t spoil the cruise for everyone else is not okay.

2. Disrespecting Staff

A woman holding a glass of white wine is having a heated discussion with a waiter in a cruise ship dining area. The waiter, carrying a plate of food, gestures emphatically as he responds. The background shows other diners and a modern, well-lit dining space.

The crew on cruise ships work really hard to make sure you have the best holiday possible, and while it’s possible for them to have an off day, I’m sure that 99.9% of the time, the staff on the ships are friendly and enthusiastic.

Despite that, there are plenty of stories of passengers showing bad manners by basically disrespecting crew, either in the way that they speak to them or the expectations they put on them.

What’s really worrying is the past guests who’ve said they’ve seen passengers be especially rude to people of colour onboard. Racism has no place in the modern world, and it’s so disrespectful especially where these people work.

I do hope that if you ever witness someone being rude to a member of the crew, especially if it’s racist in any way, you’ll report it to Guest Services so that the security staff onboard can have a word.

3. Styling Hair at the Dinner Table

woman brushing her hair at the dinner table on a cruise ship

A cruise passenger spoke about how they didn’t enjoy seeing another passenger styling their hair at the dining table.

To be fair, it could pose hygiene concerns but also, some people view dinner as an event and really you should be ready to eat when you enter the dining room, not getting ready halfway through.

Do you think this one is bad manners?

4. Inappropriate Buffet Etiquette

An elderly man with white hair and a mustache is returning a stack of used plates to the buffet area on a cruise ship. He appears focused as he carefully places the plates, while other passengers and staff can be seen in the background. The setting is a bustling dining area with a variety of food stations.

Cruise lines put a lot of effort into ensuring that the buffet restaurants in particular are hygienic. You don’t want to get a sickness bug on a cruise ship as it’ll spread like wildfire, and the buffet is a breeding ground for cross-contamination if you aren’t careful.

That’s why you get members of the crew whose job is to stand outside the buffet telling people (or singing to them) to wash their hands.

Despite that, people still show bad manners through a basic disregard for rules. This includes returning used plates to the buffet instead of stacking them on your table, and even worse, someone reported seeing someone pick up food, lick it, decide they didn’t want it and put it back on the buffet!

Of course, the passenger telling the story alerted the crew who removed it and cleaned up, but seriously…

5. Elevator Misbehaviour

kids messing about in the lift on a cruise

So many of the stories of bad manners on a cruise ship are related to the elevators. It’s such a basic part of life on a cruise ship – using an elevator to move between floors – but it causes problems for so many people!

Sometimes it’s kids, who are pressing all the buttons for fun and making other passengers wait for the elevator to visit every floor. Even if there isn’t anyone else in the elevator at the time, it slows things down for others waiting.

Then there are the people who force their way onto an elevator before others have had the chance to get off. It happens so frequently – just wait and make sure nobody is exiting!

6. Floral Theft

A woman in a white blouse is seen stealing yellow flowers on a table in a cruise ship's dining or lounge area. The setting has a warm, ambient lighting with other passengers visible in the background.

Cruise ships are often decorated, sometimes with fresh flowers but often with plastic ones too, just to add to the general ambience and make the ship seem more pleasant.

Some cruise passengers reported people stealing these flowers, either just as a souvenir or to use as an accessory in their hair.

That’s not what they’re there for – they are for everyone’s enjoyment, and it’s awful manners to assume that the ship exists purely for your own personal benefit.

7. Fighting and Drunkenness

Two men, appearing to be intoxicated, are engaged in a physical altercation in a cruise ship's bar or lounge area. One man is holding a drink while the other grabs his arm, and both have distressed expressions. The setting is dimly lit with other passengers visible in the background, some of whom seem to be observing the commotion.

We’re almost moving away from ‘bad manners’ with this one into more serious territory, but some people mentioned it and so I’ll include it here. People have often seen others having physical fights on a cruise or becoming so drunk that they’re acting inappropriately.

One passenger told of others who were pulling up the kilts of men on the ship, laughing at them for wearing ‘skirts’, because they were drunk. Imagine pulling down the top of a woman in the same way! Crazy.

Often it’s not just physical but verbal fighting too, having huge arguments over anything from sunbeds to places in the queues. Just relax, and if someone is misbehaving, speak to the crew rather than trying to resolve it yourself.

8. Ignoring Disabled Passengers

A man in a wheelchair, with a concerned expression, is at the forefront of an elevator on a cruise ship, surrounded by other passengers who appear to be ignoring him. The passengers include a woman carrying a bag, an older man in a suit, and several others in the background, all looking away or preoccupied. The scene conveys a sense of neglect and lack of awareness towards the needs of the disabled passenger.

Cruises are great for disabled passengers, since they’re relatively easy (in most cases) to navigate in wheelchairs or on motorised scooters.

But then there are those who just don’t care about helping disabled passengers out and who will often ignore them.

Really, you should give people with disabilities priority for elevators if you can, since it’s harder for them to find space if other elevators are busy. And just make sure to give people plenty of space, especially when they need to turn a scooter around.

Having said that, I’ve seen other Facebook posts in the past with people complaining about those using a scooter who have no regard for other passengers, running over their toes. So it does go both ways – be kind to anyone with mobility issues, but if you’re using a scooter, be aware of others onboard too.

9. Lack of Personal Hygiene

A cruise ship guest with dirty, mud-covered hands holds them up in front of a buffet, highlighting the unsanitary condition amidst a backdrop of other passengers enjoying their meals. The scene emphasizes the importance of cleanliness and hygiene in communal dining areas.

I was not surprised to see that people complained about lack of personal hygiene on cruises when it comes to hand-washing. I know that some people try to avoid washing before eating at the buffet because they’re lazy, and I’ve seen people not even know how to sneeze right (into your elbow – it isn’t hard, my kids know!)

One passenger even talked about the basic hygiene of people – specifically women – not flushing the public toilets. It’s not hard to follow simple standards, somebody else shouldn’t have to deal with that for you.

10. Inappropriate Dress Codes

A woman wearing a colorful bikini sits at a dining table on a cruise ship, with a plate of food in front of her. The dining room is filled with other passengers enjoying their meals, highlighting a casual and relaxed atmosphere on the cruise.

Formal dress codes are becoming less important on cruises – you don’t have to worry too much about packing suits and dresses if you don’t want to.

But there are also basic dress codes that you need to adhere to, including not wearing wet bathing suits (or indeed any bathing suit) in a restaurant, or showing up in thong bikinis and nothing else.

Be considerate. You’re fine to wear bikinis and bathing suits by the pool, but put some clothes on when you go to eat.

Suggested read: 9 Things You Should Never Wear On A Cruise

11. Line-Cutting and Aggressive Behaviour

A man with a furious expression is aggressively holding a large knife and a plate of food, appearing to cut the line at a crowded cruise ship buffet. Other passengers in the background look startled and concerned, highlighting the disruptive behavior in an otherwise orderly dining setting.

It’s important to show simple good manners by using the lines in the buffets or for other services around the ship properly.

Don’t cut in line, it’s rude and it’s not like you ever need to wait too long anyway. Plenty of people have mentioned seeing others try to sneak ahead and even get aggressive when challenged on it.

12. Misuse of Drinks Packages

A man with a mischievous look is standing behind a bar on a cruise ship, with multiple colorful drinks lined up in front of him, suggesting he is hoarding beverages. The background shows other passengers seated and engaged in conversation, unaware of his actions.

A drinks package can be a great way to save money on the beverages you buy, but you need to use it appropriately.

Don’t be greedy and don’t cheat the system. This means, don’t try to hoard drinks to enjoy later on, and don’t use your package to get drinks for someone else.

If you’re caught abusing the system, then you might have your package cancelled without a refund. And it’s not fair on others if you’re trying to cheat things.

13. Public Flossing

A woman dressed elegantly in a black dress is using dental floss while seated at a formally set dining table in a cruise ship's dining room, which features large windows showcasing the ocean view. Other diners can be seen in the background, adding to the upscale ambiance of the scene.

I’m not talking about the dance here, just to be clear. This is about dental flossing.

Look, I know that when you’re enjoying your dinner on a cruise, but you get a chunk of food stuck in your teeth, it might be a little frustrating.

Still, if you absolutely have to floss, excuse yourself to the bathroom or something. People have talked about seeing others floss at the table or even when in line for the buffet, and that’s gross – have some respect for others.

Final Word

These are some of the recurring issues with bad manners that people have seen on cruises, and I’m sure there are more – feel free to add your own story in the comments.

Basic manners should be easy, but there are some specific cruise ship etiquette rules you might want to brush up on before you sail.

They are basic and they do cover some of these manner faux pas, but there are some other tips too that you should make sure you know for your next cruise.
