Viking Team Discovers New Penguin Colony In Antarctica

Viking® today announced its expedition team supported the discovery of a new colony of chinstrap penguins not previously known to science on Diaz Rock, near Astrolabe Island, in Antarctica. The finding took place in January 2024 when Viking’s expedition vessel, the Viking Octantis®, visited Astrolabe Island, a three-mile-long island, located in the Bransfield Strait of the Trinity Peninsula in Antarctica. Astrolabe Island is home to a colony of chinstrap penguins that had not been surveyed since 1987.

Discovers New Penguin Colony in Antarctica

During the visit, Viking’s scientific partner, Oceanites, the leading field research entity in Antarctic penguin monitoring, conducted a visual and thermal aerial survey. The fieldwork documented the first survey in nearly 40 years of the known chinstrap penguin colony of Astrolabe Island and in the process, discovered the additional colony on Diaz Rock. Oceanites will share additional details from the survey in a scientific paper to follow in due course.

Today’s announcement is an example of Viking’s commitment that every expedition voyage on the Viking Octantis and her identical sister ship, the Viking Polaris®, should provide opportunities for meaningful scientific discovery. The findings also come one year after Viking published its first scientific paper in Polar Research, the scientific journal of the Norwegian Polar Institute, following its expedition team’s encounters with rare giant phantom jellyfish in Antarctica.

“With our third season in Antarctica underway, we are pleased to have supported another significant scientific development that will allow for further understanding of the region,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “From the thoughtful design of our expedition vessels, each with a well-appointed Science Lab, to our partnerships with some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, our intention has always been to provide our guests and scientists with opportunities for meaningful discovery during each voyage. We look forward to supporting other critical research opportunities on future voyages.”

Viking Expedition Team & Scientific Partners

Viking has created the world’s leading scientific enrichment environment in an expedition setting with the help of partnerships with esteemed academic institutions. During each expedition, visiting researchers from partner institutions are part of the multidisciplinary 36-person expedition team. This group of experts leads guests through meaningful scientific research, providing guiding and interpretation during shore excursions and delivering world-class lectures.

For 30 years, Oceanites, an American not-for-profit field research entity, has led on Antarctic penguin monitoring. As scientific partners, Viking supports the fieldwork of Oceanites through mobilizing teams of penguin researchers on its Antarctic expedition voyages and providing thermal cameras.

“The Antarctic peninsula is well-traveled and explored, and it is not often we find a new penguin colony,” said Dr. Grant Humphries, Director of Science at Oceanites. “Our partnership with Viking opened a new opportunity to not only count the chinstrap penguins on Astrolabe Island for the first time since the 1980s, but it also allowed us to locate and map a colony of chinstrap penguins previously unknown to us. This work will allow us to get a better understanding of how Antarctic penguin population dynamics are shifting in an ever-changing world.”

“Viking’s expedition vessels continue to showcase the potential of reimagined ‘ships of opportunity’ and the research capabilities available for scientific efforts,” said Dr. Damon Stanwell-Smith, Head of Science and Sustainability at Viking. “With scientists from our partner organizations on board, like Oceanites, we can conduct real, meaningful research in the regions. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Oceanites and other science partners to bring more findings forward in the future.”

In addition to Oceanites, Viking’s other scientific partners include:

  • The University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI): Scientists from SPRI undertake fieldwork on board Viking’s expedition ships and join voyages to share expertise with guests. Cambridge University’s SPRI played a significant role in developing the scientific enrichment program for Viking Expeditions. Specialists from the Institute were also consulted in the development of The Science Lab on Viking’s expedition vessels; the 380-square-foot lab is comprehensively appointed with wet and dry laboratory facilities and supports a broad range of research. Julian Dowdeswell, Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Cambridge, and former director of SPRI, serves as the Chair of the Viking Research Advisory Group, a consortium of scientific leaders from Viking’s partner institutions who have been actively involved in overseeing the field research being undertaken on board.

In 2022, Viking announced the Viking Polar Marine Geoscience Fund which endows the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) with its first-ever fully funded professorship—the Viking Chair of Polar Marine Geoscience. This post enables the development of new lines of research into the behavior of polar environments, including polar ice sheets, sea ice and ocean circulation.

  • The Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Ornithologists are regularly on board Viking’s expedition vessels, undertaking post-doctoral research on new observation methods and providing guest advice and interaction.
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL): Conducts innovative research on the dynamic environments and ecosystems of the Great Lakes and coastal regions to provide information for resource use and management decisions that lead to safe and sustainable ecosystems, ecosystem services, and human communities. Viking’s expedition ships have been designated official NOAA / US National Weather Service weather balloon stations, from which regular launches are undertaken.
  • Norwegian Institute of Water Research (NIVA): Scientists from NIVA are engaged in cross-disciplinary research programs on water-related issues. On Viking’s expedition ships, NIVA “FerryBox system” of automated oceanographic instruments are installed to sample the marine and freshwater regions where the vessels sail, to provide continuous information about chlorophyll, oxygen, temperature, salinity, microplastic presence and complementary meteorological data.
  • Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego: Viking hosts Fjord Phyto, a NASA-funded program of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, that provides the opportunity for guests to engage in research and public education through novel citizen science sampling of polar phytoplankton, for genetic population analyses.
  • The IUCN Species Survival Commission Species Monitoring Specialist Group: Viking coordinates with this international group of experts to develop marine biodiversity monitoring systems that enable Viking expedition vessels to collect valuable species population data.
  • Norwegian Polar Institute: The permitting authority for Viking’s Norwegian flagged expedition vessels, who review and approve all of Viking’s expedition and science activities in Antarctica.

Viking Expeditions

Viking offers destination-focused expeditions in Antarctica, the Arctic and North America’s Great Lakes, with an expedition fleet that includes the Polar Class Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris. Designed for discovery by the same team that designed the award-winning Viking Longships® and ocean ships, the 378-guest vessels are specifically built for expeditions, at an ideal size for safety, comfort and to support an unrivalled range of activities in remote destinations. With more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than other expedition vessels, guests are as close as possible to the most magnificent scenery on earth.

Not Fully Ready? Technical Difficulties Hit New Cruise Ship On Her Second Sailing

Sun Princess has not had the smoothest launch – after two separate inaugural cruises were cancelled – and even now she is officially sailing, she is still experiencing minor issues, as guests on the ship’s second sailing have found out.

Sun Princess

Upon boarding, guests were informed that the scheduled port of call to Santorini would be cancelled, as due to an unclarified technical issue the ship was not ready to use tender boats.

Santorini is one of the most popular ports in the region, and many people book cruises in the area to visit the island – but it is a tender port, meaning that cruise ships can’t dock directly at the island.

Due to technical delays, we are still working to finalize shoreside tendering operations involving embarkation and debarkation on the ship. Until that is completed, we regrettably will not be able to call to Santorini, including the visit scheduled for Saturday, March 16. We understand the allure of Santorini and apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment this change may cause.

Letter to guests from the ship’s captain, Craig Street

The cruise line has replaced the port visit with a sailing to Chania, so guests won’t just be left with an extra sea day.

And while changes to ports of call are permitted under the cruise contract that guests sign, Princess Cruises is also giving each guest a $50 credit to their onboard account as a goodwill gesture.

Any guests who’ve booked shore excursions for Santorini through the cruise line will be automatically refunded, but guests who’ve booked through a third party will need to contact the company they’ve booked with to seek a refund.

While the launch for the cruise ship has not gone as smoothly as Princess Cruises has intended, she is already being spoken of very highly by guests on social media and, once fully ready, she will definitely be a worthy flagship for the cruise line.

Your Travel Checklist Should Have These 10 Things

Traveling is inevitable, but you can pack for it smartly. Based on the location and region, you can include everything you need from must-haves to might needs. Apart from clothes and accessories, there is a lot more you need to fit in your bag. Some of them ensure your digital accessibility while others cover different aspects of your well-being. In this blog, we are listing ten extremely vital items that should be on your checklist. Read on to confirm if your list matches ours!

From over-the-counter medications to strict regimes, your travel kits are incomplete without healthcare items. Traveling can take a toll on your health and your vitals. Storing supplements, digestive medicines, and painkillers will be a good decision. Also, visit a travel doctor to observe any specific details related to the destination’s atmosphere and health implications. We suggest preparing a suitable kit beforehand.

Let’s be real, no matter how well-acquainted we are with the roads, we still need an informed perspective for guidance. There are many apps and navigation resources that can help you get to any location. However, this should not be the only concern of a location tracing structure. If you enable the ‘Find my Phone’ option on your smartphone, you can protect it better. This works wonderfully for individuals with a lost or stolen mobile device. Be sure to download it before you arrive at your destination.

Even a few kilometers worth of traveling can be demanding. For farther locations, the process becomes even more excruciating. Keeping a pair of good-quality earphones can provide the entertainment you need.

Your phone can run out of battery pretty fast while traveling. To avoid losing connection and stay safe, keep a fully-fueled portable charger at all times. So, even when your phone dies, you can regain access by simply plugging in.

A lot of internet providers have facilities encouraging hotspot services in various areas. For instance, Cox has descriptive network features to empower a fully digital user experience. Similarly, many other telecom companies have accessible internet points and nationwide sites that ensure a consistent and dedicated flow of signals even when you are moving from one point to another. Having a device or accessible data can help you stay on track and get all the information you need without any worries. For instance, if you are a Mexican native traveling to say, Las Vegas, you can always contact Cox las vegas servicio al cliente en español to know more about free Wi-Fi hotspots.

Allergies, doctor’s notes, identity documents, and everything else. You need to keep it all in a neatly organized folder. Every piece of information that concerns your well-being and will impact your traveling experience needs to be included in that folder. Itineraries and bookings need to be kept along with such stuff based on their importance and order. Don’t forget to pack your work documents or any remotely needed data that you might or might not utilize while traveling.

This is super important. Adapters and widely applicable electric converters need to be packed safely and away from all liquids. You may find an electrical outlet but not a compatible adapter for your devices. A universally used plug or converter can solve this problem and make sure nothing stands in the way of your devices and the needed power supply. However, pack them separately to avoid a damaging mess and remove stuff that can compromise their quality.

You should and might have your local currency sorted but if you are traveling internationally, it’s extremely necessary to get it converted and exchanged. Emergencies may strike but we need the relevant currency to get food, water, a place to stay, and other necessities. We suggest getting this done at least two days before your departure so any unpredictable spikes or drops can be covered accordingly.

Water is a universal element that should be available and can be purchased from anywhere. However, if you do have any drinking water outlets available in sight, your reusable water bottle can be an economical and wise choice. Get a sturdy tumbler with a dark or light color based on weather preferences to stay hydrated and keep your budget in check. Buy one with a nifty hook to keep it hanging as you go about your day while pulling it up when needed.

Traveling requires you to pack with awareness. Based on the duration of your stay, you will need to either pack less or a lot. Either way, a haphazard and disorganized session can leave your packing messy. Invest in packing cubes to correctly place all the items and then sort them in your baggage. This will help you save space and be responsible with your packing.

One payment option is not enough, which is why you need a card along with cash. Research the tax division between your current and future points and pick the sites to exchange money or withdraw cash. Regardless of your journey, you will need at least two payment methods to have a stress-free traveling experience.

One common question that arises when considering MSC drink packages is whether gratuities are included. Well, the good news is that all MSC Cruises pre-paid drink packages already include 18% beverage gratuities. This means that you don’t have to worry about paying extra for gratuities when you purchase a drink package. The gratuity is already factored into the package price, simplifying your onboard experience.

Can One Person Get a Drink Package on MSC?

Many solo travelers wonder if they can purchase a drink package solely for themselves on MSC Cruises. Unfortunately, MSC Cruises requires that drink packages be booked by all guests occupying the same cabin and traveling together. This policy applies to both adult guests and minors. So, if you are traveling alone, you will not be able to purchase a drink package specifically for yourself.

Are MSC Cruises Drink Packages Unlimited?

One of the key benefits of MSC Cruises drink packages is that they offer unlimited beverages throughout your cruise. This means that you can enjoy as many alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks as you like each day. Whether you’re in the mood for a refreshing cocktail by the pool or a glass of wine with dinner, you can indulge in your favorite beverages without worrying about additional costs.

However, it’s important to note that there is a limit to the number of drinks you can order at once. MSC Cruises has a policy that guests are only allowed to order one drink per order. This is to ensure responsible drinking and to prevent guests from becoming intoxicated. While you can certainly enjoy multiple drinks throughout the day, you’ll need to place separate orders for each one.

So, while MSC Cruises drink packages offer unlimited beverages, there are some limitations to keep in mind. Make sure to pace yourself and drink responsibly, respecting the rules set by the cruise line. By doing so, you can fully enjoy the convenience and variety that the drink packages have to offer.

Pros and Cons of MSC Drink Packages

When considering whether to buy an MSC drink package, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons. Here are some key factors to consider:

Pros

1. Convenience: One of the main advantages of an MSC drink package is the convenience it offers. With a package, you have access to a wide variety of beverages throughout your cruise without having to worry about individual costs or keeping track of a bar tab.

2. Cost savings: For those who enjoy indulging in a range of drinks, purchasing a package can potentially save you money compared to buying drinks individually. This is especially true if you plan on consuming alcoholic beverages, as the cost of cocktails, beers, and wines can add up quickly.

3. Variety of options: MSC offers several different drink packages, allowing you to choose the option that best suits your preferences and budget. From basic packages that include soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages to more inclusive options that cover premium cocktails and wines, there is something for everyone.

Cons

1. Upfront cost: While drink packages can save you money in the long run, they do require an upfront investment. Depending on the package you choose, prices can range from $49 to $100 per person, per day. This cost may be prohibitive for some guests, especially if they don’t plan on consuming a significant amount of beverages.

2. Drink preferences: It’s important to consider your own drink preferences when deciding whether a package is worth it for you. If you primarily stick to non-alcoholic beverages or have specific preferences for certain types of drinks, you may find that a package doesn’t offer enough value for your individual needs.

3. Port days: Another factor to consider is whether your cruise itinerary includes a lot of port days. If you plan on spending a significant amount of time off the ship exploring the destinations, you may not have as many opportunities to take advantage of the drink package.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to purchase an MSC drink package depends on your individual preferences, budget, and cruise plans. Consider the convenience, potential cost savings, and variety of options offered by the packages, as well as any potential drawbacks, to determine if a drink package is the right choice for you.

Tips for Choosing the Right MSC Drink Package

Choosing the right MSC drink package can enhance your cruising experience and ensure that you have the perfect beverages to suit your preferences. Consider the following tips when selecting your drink package:

  1. Know your drink preferences: Take some time to think about the types of beverages you enjoy. If you’re a fan of premium cocktails, wines, and beers, the Premium Extra Package may be your best bet. However, if you prefer simpler drinks like soft drinks and classic cocktails, the Easy Package or Easy Plus Package might be more suitable.
  2. Consider the duration of your cruise: The length of your cruise can play a role in determining the most cost-effective drink package for you. If you’re embarking on a shorter cruise, it might be wise to opt for a less expensive package that still includes your favorite drinks. On longer cruises, you may want to indulge in a more inclusive package to enjoy a wider variety of beverages.
  3. Take your planned activities into account: Think about the activities you have planned onboard. If you’re someone who enjoys lounging by the pool and sipping on refreshing drinks, a package that includes frozen cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages might be ideal. Conversely, if you plan on dining at specialty restaurants and indulging in premium beverages, a more comprehensive package will offer greater value.

Final Thoughts

By understanding the available options and carefully weighing the pros and cons, you can make an informed choice that best suits their needs. Whether it’s the convenience of having all beverages included or the desire to stick to a budget, there is a drink package that can enhance the cruise experience for every guest.

So, as you plan your next MSC cruise, take the time to explore the different drink package options and consider what will work best for you. Cheers to finding the perfect drink package that will make your cruise even more enjoyable!

The Best Cruises from Newcastle (2024)

If you live in the North East of England, the journey to Southampton to join your cruise ship can be a long and expensive one. That’s why many people prefer to cruise from Newcastle wherever possible.

Port of Tyne

In this guide to cruising from Newcastle, I’ll show you which cruise ships sail from Newcastle and where you can cruise to, as well as some tips to help you plan your cruise.

Why Cruise From Newcastle?

86% of cruise ships departing from the UK sail from Southampton. But for people living in the North East, Southampton is very tricky to get to.

There are no direct trains from Newcastle to Southampton, which leaves cruisers with the option of a six-hour drive, multiple trains, or a flight that will cost at least a couple of hundred pounds per person.

Cruising from Newcastle is a great option as you’ll be able to get to the port easily, park your car at the Port of Tyne and your holiday will begin the moment you step onboard.

If you plan to head north to Norway or Iceland on your cruise, it doesn’t make much sense to first go south before joining your ship and cruising back up to where you started.

Port of Tyne

What Cruise Lines Sail From Newcastle?

As the Port of Tyne is relatively small, it can only handle up to 2000 passengers and cruise ships that are less than 300m in length. While this rules out some of the mega-ships, there are still several cruise ships that depart from Newcastle.

Here’s a look at what cruises from Newcastle 2024 has to offer:

1. Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offers cruises from Newcastle throughout the summer on Balmoral and Borealis. These small cruise ships have space for just 1300-1400 passengers, and offer destination-focused itineraries that are popular with the over 50s.

Fred. Olsen cruise ships don’t have many facilities for children. You may find a few children onboard during the school holidays, but some cruises are adults only.

However, while there are no direct P&O cruises from Newcastle, you can take P&O fly-cruise holiday departing from Newcastle Airport and join your ship in Tenerife, Malta or the Caribbean. Or just fly from Newcastle to Southampton to start your P&O cruise instead.

Can You Drink The Tap Water On A Cruise Ship?

There are a lot of people I know that don’t feel comfortable drinking water that comes from a tap, especially somewhere like a hotel or a cruise ship.

They have this nagging feeling like maybe the water isn’t properly clean – it’s OK for brushing your teeth but you wouldn’t want to drink it.

cruise ship water

Are they right? Is cruise ship water safe to drink? And how about the other water sources around the ship?

I’ve got some good news.

Can You Drink the Water on a Cruise Ship?

You can safely drink the water on a cruise ship, including the water from your bathroom tap. The only water you would probably want to avoid is the water from hand washing stations or public bathrooms, and only then because it may be warm and other people may have left bacteria behind.

The actual drinking water on cruise ships though? Clean as you’d like. And so you shouldn’t worry about drinking it.

As well as the world’s unhealthiest breakfasts, Adam loves drinking water

Here’s a look at where you can find water on a cruise ship, and whether or not it’s suitable for drinking:

Bars & Restaurants

The water you’re served in the bars and restaurants on your cruise ship is absolutely fine for drinking. Only filtered water is served as tap water in a restaurant, and this water has added ice so it’s extra refreshing.

In poolside bars, the water may have lemon slices too. Just what you need to cool down om a hot day!

ice water dispenser

If you’re eating in the Main Dining Room, this water is likely to be your only free option if you don’t have a drinks package, or at least one of just a few free options. It’s a good choice for keeping costs down!

You can ask for a glass of water with or without ice for free in any bar and you can also help yourself to water from the buffet.

The only exception is if you’re cruising with Costa Cruises – this is the only cruise line that doesn’t provide free drinking water in bars and restaurants. You can get it in the buffet, though.

Cruise ships generally filter their own water for guests to drink, so there’s always plenty available even on longer itineraries, and it is properly treated to make sure it is safe.

Water Dispensers

Your ship will have water dispensers in the buffet restaurant, and potentially other locations around the ship too. Again, this is another excellent place to drink water from, as it is clean and cool.

water and ice dispenser in the buffet on a cruise ship

Some dispensers are designed to let you refill water bottles, while others aren’t, so just be aware you might not be able to carry a bottle around with you – you might be limited to grabbing a cup of water when you need one instead.

water bottle refill dispenser

Also, some dispensers may seem like they fit a water bottle, but you’re not allowed to. It’s for hygiene reasons. What you can do instead is fill a cup and then pour that into your bottle – that’s fine.

As long as you aren’t putting the part of the bottle where you’ve been drinking next to the water dispenser, you should be OK.

A refillable water bottle is definitely a must-pack item for any cruise though. You can fill it up before you go to bed to drink in the night, take it to the gym or running track and also take it with you on excursions.

I love this Iron Flask water bottle because it’s made of double-walled stainless steel to keep your water cold (or coffee hot) and comes with three different lids – a straw lid, flip lid and metal lid.

The Bathroom Tap In Your Cabin

Cruise ship tap water in your stateroom is perfectly safe to drink. It likely won’t be as cold as the water you’d get in the restaurants or from the dispensers around the ship, and since it isn’t filtered as heavily it may not taste the same, but there’s nothing wrong with it.

cruise ship bathroom

I find that the taste of the bathroom water really varies on cruise ships. On some it’s lovely. But on others, it’s warm and tastes funny.

Don’t worry if you wake up in the middle of the night and you feel thirsty – you don’t need to get dressed and trek to the nearest dispenser just to grab a drink. It might not be the best water, but it’ll do when you’re desperate.

Handwashing Stations and Public Bathrooms

The one place on a ship where I wouldn’t recommend drinking the water is the taps in the handwashing stations and public bathrooms.

Cruise Ship Hand Washing Sinks

The actual water is clean enough to drink, but the taps themselves may not be – this is where everyone is washing their hands after all, so there may be bacteria around the taps.

Not only that, the water will be warm too – and nobody likes to drink warm water, do they?

The Spa

The best water on cruise ships can be found in the spa. Here, you’ll usually find a selection of water dispensers, each ice cold and flavoured with tropical fruits or cucumbers.

iced water dispensers

The same can also be found in any private retreat areas that you have to pay extra for. These don’t have so many guests so you get extra special treatment and the most refreshing water.

Should You Buy Bottled Water on a Cruise Ship?

You don’t need to buy bottled water on your cruise ship, but it’s always an option if you prefer it. You may have a particular brand that you like, or you might just prefer to have a bottle of water with you in your cabin at night.

cans of water

And if you like sparkling water, then the only way you’re going to get it is by buying a bottle, or possibly in the restaurants at dinner time. They don’t dispense that at the buffet, unfortunately!

Some cruise lines like Azamara and Virgin Voyages will include bottled water in your stateroom for you already, while there are some cruise lines which are all-inclusive – Silversea and Regent Seven Seas are two of the most well-known. These will also have bottled water available in your cabin at no charge.

With other cruise lines, you may get bottled water included when you buy a drinks package.

It’s worth pointing out that some cruise lines, like Carnival and Disney, will also let you bulk-buy bottles of water for your cabin. They tend to be pretty good value too – Disney’s is $60 for a 24-pack of water, which is $2.50 a bottle. You can get 6-packs and 12-packs too.

Carnival’s is even cheaper though – 12 bottles for $11.95. That’s (just) less than $1 a bottle, and probably less than you’d pay ashore in some places! So if you’re determined to drink bottled water, rather than drinking from the tap, it’s worth checking this out.

Of course, the cheapest way would be to bring your own. But are you allowed? The answer varies by cruise line.

Some cruise lines will let you bring as many soft drinks and bottles of water onboard with you as you want, while others have limitations in place.

Cruise Line How much bottled water you can bring onboard
Carnival 12 x 330ml cans or cartons (no bottles) per passenger
Celebrity Unlimited
Costa None – unless it is for medical purposes (distilled)
Cunard Unlimited
Disney Unlimited
Fred. Olsen Unlimited
Holland America Line 12 x 500ml or 6 x 1-litre cans or cartons (no bottles) per stateroom
MSC Cruises None – unless it is for medical purposes (distilled)
NCL None – unless it is for medical purposes (distilled)
P&O Cruises Unlimited
Princess Cruises Unlimited
Royal Caribbean 12 x 500ml bottles, cans or cartons per stateroom
Virgin Voyages 12 x 12oz (350)ml cans or cartons (no bottles) per passenger

Read more: Can You Bring Your Own Drinks on a Cruise?

Some cruise lines will have cheaper drinks packages focusing on fountain sodas. These won’t include bottled water, but might be worth considering if you’re just looking to avoid tap water and want something with flavour.

One other thing to consider – if you don’t like the flavour of tap water in general, and you’re cruising with a line that lets you bring soft drinks onboard, why not bring some cordial?

You don’t have to lug a heavy bottle around in your carry-on luggage – buy one of the small concentrated squeezy containers that fits in the palm of your hand and makes 20+ drinks. It’s small, so will barely take up any packing space, but will improve the flavour of the tap water with every drink.

Final Word

Cruise ship water is fine to drink. They’re hardly pumping the sea water around the ship! Just be aware of the rules around refilling bottles at public water stations, and consider buying bottled water or squash if you don’t like the idea of drinking plain, unfiltered tap water.

Everything You Need to Know

A cruise can be a great way to travel during pregnancy. But, if you’re planning to take a cruise while pregnant, there are certain things that you’ll need to be aware of.

cruise while pregnant

I took a Caribbean cruise when I was 12 weeks pregnant and I’m sad to admit that I made a couple of mistakes because I wasn’t aware of all the rules and recommendations. So I wrote this guide to help others who might fall into the same trap.

Here’s a picture of me and my bump with the Norwegian Breakaway. I probably shouldn’t have done that high ropes course, in retrospect.

Pregnant me on a cruise

But, I’ve done my research since then, so read on for everything you need to know about cruising while pregnant.

While you’re here, if coming up with a baby name is on your list still, take a look at my list of ocean-themed names for babies for some inspiration.

Can You Go On a Cruise While Pregnant?

You can go on a cruise provided that you are well enough to travel and have not entered the third trimester of your pregnancy (24 weeks). To be allowed to travel, you must be less than 24 weeks pregnant on the last day of your cruise.

You will be denied boarding – in early 2024, a woman was banned from the ship due to the Carnival cruise pregnancy policy and refused a refund.

Is It Safe To Go On a Cruise While Pregnant?

If you are having a normal, healthy pregnancy then it is perfectly safe to go on a cruise. However, if you have any pregnancy complications, medical conditions, previous premature births or are expecting multiple babies, your doctor may advise you not to cruise.

If you’re in any doubt about whether cruising during pregnancy is safe, you should contact your doctor for advice.

Do You Have To Tell the Cruise Line You Are Pregnant?

Most cruise lines require that you bring a doctor’s letter that states your estimated due date and that you are fit to travel. However, you’re unlikely to be asked to show the letter unless your bump is obvious.

You should always tell your travel insurance company that you’re pregnant to make sure that your pregnancy is covered. If you don’t, you may invalidate your travel insurance policy.

hiding pregnancy on a cruise

Hiding Pregnancy on a Cruise

Sneaking on a cruise pregnant is a really bad idea. Please don’t do it! If you go into early labour, you may be stuck at sea with none of the facilities that a premature baby needs to keep them alive.

Even if you can make it ashore in time to deliver your baby, you may find yourself trapped in another country for months until your baby is well enough to come home. You could face huge medical bills that aren’t covered by your travel insurance. It’s just not worth the risk.

The Baby That Was Born on a Cruise Ship

In 2015, a baby was born on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, four months early and weighing just 1lb 8oz. Medical staff managed to keep him alive until the ship reached port.

Doctors initially told the mother that the baby was dead, but later discovered that he was, in fact, alive. The ship reached Puerto Rico 12 hours later, where the baby was rushed to the hospital, before being flown to Miami a few days later.

The baby spent the next four months in the hospital before being allowed home. The birth certificate said, ‘place of birth – at sea’.

Can You Cancel a Cruise if You Fall Pregnant?

It’s common to book a cruise many months (or even years) in advance. If you fall pregnant in between booking your cruise and sailing, you may find that you’re unable to cruise because you’ll be too far along in your pregnancy, or you’ll have a newborn baby.

If this happens, you should contact your cruise line (or travel agent) to let them know.

In most cases, your cruise line will allow you to move your cruise to another date or will issue you with a voucher for a Future Cruise Credit.

It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to get a full refund for your cruise, but you may be able to claim on your travel insurance, as long as you were not aware of the pregnancy when you booked the cruise.

Tips for Cruising During Pregnancy

1. Choose Your Destination Carefully

During your pregnancy, you should avoid visiting any countries where there is a risk of zika virus, malaria or any developing countries where the food or water may not be safe.

2. Check Your Travel Insurance

You’ll need to let your insurer know that you’re pregnant, and ensure that you have adequate cover to cruise while pregnant.

3. Pack Acupressure Wristbands

Pregnancy can make seasickness worse. So even if you don’t usually get seasick, you may do when you’re pregnant.

You won’t be able to take any seasickness medication while you’re pregnant. The best drug-free ways of dealing with seasickness are to buy acupressure wristbands on Amazon or to eat ginger biscuits and green apples.

4. Use Plenty of Sunscreen

Pregnancy can cause your skin to become extra sensitive and you can burn more easily in the sun. As cruise ships are often windy, you can get burnt even if the weather doesn’t feel particularly warm. So, always use sunscreen with a high SPF and reapply it regularly.

5. Check Which Activities Are Suitable

Some of the activities that you’ll find on a cruise ship, such as water slides, zip-lining and ice skating are not suitable for pregnant women. Each activity will have a board outside listing the restrictions, so be sure to read it before you join the line.

bumper cars
Your bump cannot ride the bumper cars

6. Get the Right Drinks Package

Usually, if you have a drinks package on a cruise, then both passengers in the cabin have to get the same one. However, if your partner wants the alcoholic drinks package and you’re pregnant, you should be allowed to get the non-alcoholic version for yourself. You might need to call the cruise line, rather than buying it online.

soft drinks on a cruise

7. Pack Comfortable Clothes

A combination of heat and over-indulgence can lead to your clothes and shoes becoming tight fairly quickly on a cruise. Pack elasticated trousers and floaty dresses to ensure that you’re comfortable. Balancing in high heels can be tricky during rough seas, so you may wish to stick to flat, comfy sandals.

Read more: What Shoes To Pack For A Cruise

8. Plan Your Excursions Carefully

Cruising during pregnancy can be exhausting, particularly if you’re sightseeing every day. If you do want to explore ashore on excursions, city tours by coach might be better than walking tours, hikes or anything too energetic

cruise in pregnancy

9. Make Time To Nap

There are lots of lovely places to take a nap on a cruise ship. So if you’re feeling tired, find a cosy day bed, send your older kids to the kids’ club and enjoy some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Cruise Lines’ Pregnancy Policies

Below, you will find links to the pregnancy policy for each cruise line…

To Conclude

Cruising while pregnant can be very enjoyable. I took a Caribbean cruise from New York during my pregnancy because I knew that once we had kids, we’d be unlikely to be able to take that kind of trip.

As long as you know what the recommendations are and listen to your body, you’ll have a great time on your cruise.

Cruise Line Discovers New Penguin Colony on Recent Cruise

Viking discovered a new chinstrap penguin colony on a recent expedition cruise to Antarctica on Viking Octantis.

The new colony, which was previously unknown to science, was discovered on Diaz Rock near Astrolabe Island, in Antarctica. Astrolabe Island is a three mile long island in the Bransfield Straight of the Trinity Peninsula.

Viking has two expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, that support scientific discovery as they cruise around the world.

During each expedition voyage on Viking, a 36 person expedition team lead guests through meaningful scientific research, providing guiding and interpretation during shore excursions and delivering world-class lectures. The team is comprised of visiting researchers from partner institutions.

Viking two expedition ships offers voyages to Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Great Lakes.

The 378 guest ships were specifically built to sail to some of the remote parts of the earth. They also offer comfort, safety, and unrivalled range of activities in remote destinations.
