132 Cruise Passengers Evacuated After Major Ship Fire in Middle of Night

You never expect something like this on a quiet river cruise through France.

Early on June 29, 2026, a fire broke out on CroisiEurope’s river ship MS Botticelli while the vessel sat docked in Honfleur, Normandy.

It appears to be a kitchen fire as the blaze started in the galley around 3:30 AM, filling sections of the ship with thick smoke and moving fast enough that the crew had to execute an immediate emergency evacuation.

Midnight Evacuation

A total of 132 passengers and 31 crew members were on board. So, 163 people were forced off the ship in the middle of the night.

Thankfully, every single person got off safely, with zero casualties or injuries reported.

Passengers woke up to smoke and alarms before being ushered off the vessel by the crew. The international guest list included travelers from France, Belgium (including roughly 40 Belgian nationals), Spain, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Germany.

Local authorities and emergency services also reacted quickly. Passengers were first brought to Honfleur’s Poudreux community hall, where teams provided water, support, and meals.

From there, they were moved into regional hotels while CroisiEurope arranged their trips back home.

The cruise line confirmed they are working to repatriate everyone as quickly as possible.

Video of Cruise Fire

The video below was audo-dubbed for English speakers as a French news station originally reported on the story. Still, it gives a sense of the fire and what it was like for passengers.

The Emergency Response

The crew clearly did a great job following emergency procedures and keeping things under control. The local mayor praised the crew’s professionalism and said that their quick actions helped prevent a tragedy.

The emergency response itself was pretty huge. More than 70 emergency responders and firefighters, including two specialized teams trained specifically to tackle ship fires, showed up at the scene.

First responders battled the fire and heavy smoke well into the morning, officially bringing the blaze under control around 8:00 AM local time.

Looking Ahead for the Ship

MS Botticelli is a longtime favorite on the Seine. Built in 2004 and fully renovated in 2016, the 360-foot vessel carries up to 145 guests on routes between Paris, Rouen, and Honfleur.

Early reports suggest the galley area took the worst of the damage and suffered extensive impacts from the fire.

Official investigations have been launched by local authorities to determine the exact cause of the ignition.

In the meantime, we will need to wait for the full damage assessment before knowing how long the vessel might be out of service.  But it looks like it might be a while.

CroisiEurope put out the following statement about the incident:

“We also extend our sincerest thanks to the emergency services, the City of Honfleur, the Prefecture, UNASS, the French Red Cross and everyone mobilized on site for their prompt response and invaluable support.”

Bottom Line

Any cruise ship captain will tell you that fires are the biggest concern for any vessel on the water. But unlike ocean cruise ships, river ships are always very close to land and in this case that made it a lot easier for the vessel to evacuate everyone quickly.

River ships also have a lot fewer passengers and crew which made it possible to get everyone onto land in a relatively short period of time.

Quick-Thinking Restaurant Manager Saves Choking Infant Aboard Carnival Celebration

A restaurant manager aboard Carnival Celebration has been honoured with the cruise line’s internal “Hero” award after saving the life of an 11-month-old girl who had stopped breathing during a recent voyage.

Carnival Celebration Crew Member Saves Guest

Millić Šarović rushed to assist the unconscious infant during his dinner break, successfully dislodging a grape that had blocked her airway and restoring her breathing within approximately one minute.

The Emergency Unfolds During Routine Dinner Break

The life-threatening incident occurred as Carnival Celebration was sailing towards Miami.

Šarović, who had just completed his shift, had settled down to eat in one of the ship’s 17 dining venues when the emergency began.

A fellow crew member approached him in visible distress, alerting him to a serious situation unfolding nearby.

Without hesitation, the restaurant manager abandoned his meal and rushed to investigate.

Unconscious Infant Surrounded By Panicked Crowd

Upon arriving at the scene, Šarović encountered a crowd gathered around the young girl. The 11-month-old appeared unconscious and was showing no signs of life, creating a terrifying situation for everyone present.

Bystanders were attempting to help by hitting the child on the back, which indicated to Šarović that she was choking.

However, he quickly recognised that no one was performing the proper Heimlich manoeuvre that could save her life.

Crew Member Takes Decisive Action Despite Personal Risk

Šarović made the split-second decision to intervene directly, despite the enormous personal and professional risks involved.

“I took her, even though I didn’t know if she was alive, and I risked a lot because if she had died in my arms, it would have destroyed my career and my life,” he told local media in Montenegro, where he resides.

The restaurant manager explained that his parental instincts took over in that critical moment.

Rather than worrying about the potential consequences, he focused entirely on saving the child’s life.

Successful Rescue After Approximately One Minute

Šarović’s training and quick thinking proved successful. After approximately one minute of performing the proper technique, the infant responded by expelling the grape that had blocked her airway.

The little girl began breathing again, bringing immense relief to everyone present.

The ship’s doctor subsequently arrived at the scene and confirmed that the baby was in stable condition following the terrifying ordeal.

Recognition From Carnival Cruise Line Leadership

Following the incident, Carnival Cruise Line presented Šarović with the company’s internal “Hero” award in recognition of his extraordinary actions.

Carnival Celebration on her maiden voyage

The award acknowledges crew members who go above and beyond in critical situations. This recognition is particularly notable given Šarović’s already distinguished record with the cruise line.

He had previously been named one of Carnival’s top leaders, demonstrating his commitment to excellence in his role as restaurant manager.

Importance Of Medical Training For Crew Members

This incident highlights the critical importance of proper medical training for cruise ship crew members.

Modern cruise ships employ thousands of staff members who may encounter medical emergencies whilst on duty or during their off-hours.

Carnival and other major cruise lines require extensive safety and first aid training for their crew members.

This preparation ensures that staff throughout the vessel can respond effectively to emergencies, not just those assigned to medical roles.

The successful outcome in this case demonstrates how such training can make the difference between life and death in critical situations.

Growing Recognition For Heroic Crew Actions

The cruise industry has increasingly highlighted stories of crew members who perform heroic acts whilst at sea.

These incidents showcase the dedication and professionalism of maritime workers who serve passengers aboard modern cruise ships.

Carnival HQ

Carnival Cruise Line’s “Hero” award programme specifically recognises employees who demonstrate exceptional courage and quick thinking in emergency situations.

Such recognition not only honours the individual crew members but also reinforces the importance of vigilance and preparedness throughout the organisation.

Šarović’s actions aboard Carnival Celebration serve as a powerful reminder that emergencies can occur at any moment, and that the presence of trained, decisive individuals can mean the difference between tragedy and triumph.

His willingness to take action despite personal risk exemplifies the highest standards of service in the maritime industry.

Off-Duty Carnival Crew Member Saves 11-Month-Old From “Almost Certain Death” at Sea

A restaurant manager on the cruise ship Carnival Celebration received Carnival Cruise Line’s “Hero” award after saving an 11-month-old child from “almost certain death” during a recent June sailing.

The hard-working crew on a cruise ship don’t get enough credit for their dedication in making sure our cruise vacations go as smoothly as possible. It’s a hard life with long months at sea.

But for one small child, a crew member’s fast thinking saved her life, even though the rescuer was technically not even on duty.

Millić Šarović, a restaurant manager from Montenegro working on the Carnival Celebration, is being celebrated after he saved an 11-month-old baby girl who was choking on a grape.

The incident happened while the ship was sailing toward PortMiami. Šarović had just finished his shift and sat down to eat in one of the ship’s dining venues when another crew member ran over in a panic.

Šarović is from Montenegro and recently was interviewed by a local news outlet in his country called Bar Info.

“I sat down to eat dinner when a worker came in all upset and said something terrible was happening. I ran and saw a crowd surrounding a little girl who was showing no signs of life,” Šarović stated during the recent interview.

The baby had choked on a grape and was unconscious, turning blue.

While people nearby were trying to help, they had been unable to clear her airway. Šarović stepped in immediately to put his emergency training into practice.

He took the infant into his arms to perform a choking rescue technique designed for babies.

A Father’s Instinct

“I instinctively jumped in because no one was applying the correct maneuver,” he said. “I took her even though I didn’t know if she was alive. It was a huge responsibility, but my parental instinct was stronger.”

As the child’s parents watched in tears, Šarović kept trying to remove the obstruction. He worked on the baby for about a minute before the block finally cleared.

“Maybe it lasted only a minute, but to me it felt much longer,” Šarović said. “Then she vomited the grape she had swallowed and started breathing again. I just sat down afterward. I was completely overwhelmed.“

The ship’s medical staff arrived afterward and confirmed that the baby had recovered. The staff also gave credit to Šarović’s quick action with saving her life.

And as you can imagine, the parents were emotional and very grateful.

The Cruise Line Honors a Hero

Carnival Cruise Line later honored Šarović with its “Hero” award during an onboard ceremony. The distinction is reserved for employees who go above and beyond to display exceptional courage and professionalism in extraordinary situations.

This was not the first time Šarović’s had received some kind of recognition from Carnival either. Last year, Carnival named him the company’s Best Leader for his commitment to leadership and the support he provides to fellow crew members.

But he said that this latest honor stands out as the highlight of his career.

“There have been many recognitions in my career, both professionally and personally, but receiving the ‘Hero’ award after saving an 11-month-old girl from almost certain death on board is the greatest achievement of my career,” Šarović said.

Stories like this don’t get enough attention, so I’m very happy to be able to brag on this crew member with well-deserved praise.

Thanks to his fast actions and training, a family got to continue their cruise with their baby safe and sound. What would have been a painful memory and a tragic loss is instead a story of heroism.

No official statement from Carnival has been made about this story, even though some outlets have reported “made up” quotes from the cruise line. I will be sure to add any official statements if we receive one.

Four Seasons Yachts Unveils Exclusive Private Island Experiences For Caribbean Debut

Four Seasons Yachts has announced two exclusive private island experiences that will form a key part of the inaugural Caribbean season for Four Seasons I, giving guests access to destinations that are typically out of reach for larger cruise ships and most traditional holidays.

The new experiences will be available on selected Caribbean and Bahamas voyages during the 2026-2027 season after the yacht completes its inaugural Mediterranean deployment and relocates to the Caribbean later this year.

Four Seasons Yachts Normans Cay Island

Guests sailing on Four Seasons I will be able to enjoy a private beach day on the uninhabited island of Prickly Pear in Anguilla, alongside an exclusive island retreat at the Yacht Club on Norman’s Cay in The Bahamas.

According to the company, the experiences have been created to combine luxury service onboard with exclusive shoreside access, offering guests a more intimate way to explore the Caribbean.

“It’s been an incredible start to our inaugural Mediterranean season and we’re excited to bring Four Seasons I to the Caribbean and The Bahamas this winter, regions that have long represented the pinnacle of yachting,

“As we looked at how to shape the experience for our guests, it was important that we create moments that capture the spirit of the destination while offering a level of access difficult to achieve through traditional travel. These new experiences are an exciting example of that vision coming to life.”

Ben Trodd, CEO of Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings Ltd., Joint Owner and Operator of Four Seasons Yachts.

Private Island Experiences Highlight Caribbean Season

One of the headline additions is a private beach day at Prickly Pear, an uninhabited island in the Anguillan archipelago known for its white sand beaches and clear waters.

Four Seasons Yachts Prickly Pear Beach Day

Four Seasons said no other vessel of a comparable size visits the island, allowing guests exclusive use of the destination during their visit.

Passengers will arrive via a dedicated tender pier before spending the day on a beach equipped with loungers, umbrellas and full service from the yacht’s crew. A Caribbean barbecue lunch will be served, while a tiki bar and live DJ entertainment are intended to create a lively yet relaxed atmosphere throughout the day.

The second experience centres on Norman’s Cay in The Bahamas, where guests will receive access to the exclusive Yacht Club overlooking the Exuma Sound.

Unlike the beach day, the Norman’s Cay visit has no scheduled programme, allowing passengers to spend the day however they choose. Guests can relax at the hilltop Yacht Club with cocktails, food and music, or explore the island independently.

Activities available include snorkelling around a sunken aircraft, paddleboarding in the lagoon, kayaking towards the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, or simply enjoying the beaches and turquoise waters.

Private lunches will also be served at a location selected by each guest, whether on the shoreline, in a secluded cove or elsewhere on the island.

Caribbean Sailings Now Available

The exclusive island experiences will feature on selected voyages throughout the 2026-2027 Caribbean and Bahamas season aboard Four Seasons I.

Four Seasons I

The yacht is currently operating its inaugural Mediterranean programme following its debut in March 2026 and will reposition to the Caribbean later this year.

Its first Caribbean season will include itineraries visiting destinations including The Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Barths, Nevis, Antigua and Anguilla.

Bookings for the Caribbean and Bahamas sailings are now open.

Carnival Cruise Line Unveils Comprehensive Details Of Milestones Recognition Programme For Loyal Guests

Carnival Cruise Line has released extensive details about its Milestones recognition system.

Within the new Carnival Rewards programme, loyal cruisers will receive commemorative coins, special gifts, and onboard credit based on total days sailed.

Carnival Celebration with a family on the beach

The announcement clarifies one of three distinct components of the revamped loyalty scheme that has generated considerable confusion amongst cruise enthusiasts since its introduction in June 2025.

Days Sailed Determines Milestone Rewards Exclusively

The Milestone recognition system operates independently from booking patterns or spending habits.

It focuses solely on the total number of days guests have sailed with Carnival.

The cruise line confirmed in an email to guests that “every day you sail with us counts toward Milestones recognition,” emphasising that achieving new recognition levels has never been more straightforward.

Unlike traditional loyalty programmes, factors such as the overall number of cruises taken, length of individual sailings, onboard spending amounts, or stateroom category selections do not influence Milestone day accumulation.

This streamlined approach ensures that all sailing days contribute equally towards reaching recognition thresholds.

First Recognition Level Begins At 50 Days Sailed

Guests who achieve their first Milestone at 50 days sailed with Carnival will receive 5,000 Carnival Rewards points.

These points can be redeemed for benefits of their choosing, offering flexibility in how they are used.

Redemption options include cruise deposits or fares, pre-cruise purchases, or onboard spending during future voyages.

women having drinks at Carnival Cruises

Sample point values provide insight into redemption options, including 1,357 points for a six-pack of soda, 2,400 points for a Bonsai Teppanyaki dinner, or 3,000 points for a thermal suite day pass.

The exact amounts vary based on specific items and services available.

Additionally, 50-day Milestone achievers will receive a “special” Sail & Sign card, though Carnival has not yet released details about its distinctive appearance compared to standard cards issued to all guests.

Enhanced Benefits Unlock At 100-Day Milestone

The 100-day Milestone brings significantly expanded recognition.

Guests receive 10,000 Carnival Rewards points alongside the special Sail & Sign card and a commemorative coin.

Two additional benefits debut at this level; however, specific details remain undefined – “onboard recognition” and Milestones onboard credit.

These perks have not been clearly explained by Carnival and may vary based on different sailings, stateroom categories, or other factors yet to be announced.

The cruise line appears to be maintaining flexibility in how these benefits are delivered to guests.

The same benefit package repeats for every successive 100-day increment.

This means guests who reach 200, 300, and 400 days sailed will receive identical rewards.

This consistent structure provides predictable recognition as loyal cruisers accumulate more sailing days with the line.

Elite 500-Day Level Introduces Premium Recognition

Guests who reach the remarkable 500-day Milestone will receive all previous 100-level benefits plus two exclusive additions.

A commemorative award and commemorative gift will be shipped directly to guests’ home addresses, marking this significant achievement.

Drinking wine on a Carnival cruise

This enhanced recognition package demonstrates Carnival’s commitment to honouring its most dedicated cruisers.

The home delivery of commemorative items ensures guests can display their achievements beyond their time at sea.

The 500-day benefit structure repeats at 600, 700, 800 days, and every successive 100-day increment thereafter.

This ensures the cruise line’s most loyal guests continue receiving meaningful recognition throughout their cruising journey.

Understanding The Three-Part Carnival Rewards System

Considerable confusion has surrounded the new Carnival Rewards programme since its initial announcement in June 2025.

This prompted the cruise line to issue multiple clarifications and adjustments over the past year.

The Milestones update represents another effort to help guests understand the distinct components of the revamped loyalty scheme.

The programme comprises three separate elements that serve different purposes.

Stars determine overall reward status levels – Red, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond – that unlock various tier benefits and privileges throughout each sailing.

Points can be redeemed for various benefits regardless of status level, providing immediate value that guests can apply towards enhancing their cruise experiences.

Milestones offer one-time recognition rewards for accumulating set numbers of days sailed with Carnival, celebrating long-term loyalty to the brand.

Key Differences Between Stars, Points, And Milestones

Both stars and points are earned based on spending, either through Carnival Cruise Line bookings or through the affiliated Mastercard.

This can include everyday non-cruise purchases.

This spending-based structure rewards guests who invest more in their cruise experiences and use the co-branded credit card for regular transactions.

Carnival Mastercard

These spending-based rewards come with expiration periods, meaning stars and points must be earned and maintained within predetermined timeframes.

This encourages active engagement with the programme and regular sailing with Carnival.

Milestones operate differently as one-time rewards that do not expire, which can be accumulated over much longer periods.

This provides recognition for lifetime loyalty regardless of how frequently guests sail or how much time passes between cruises.

Programme Evolution Continues As Guest Feedback Arrives

Since the Carnival Rewards programme remains relatively new, additional changes may emerge as it goes live across the fleet.

The cruise line receives feedback from guests actively using their rewards.

Carnival has demonstrated willingness to refine the programme based on cruiser responses and operational experience.

The cruise line’s iterative approach suggests that current Milestone benefits may expand or be modified to better serve loyal guests.

As more cruisers reach various Milestone levels, Carnival will gain valuable insights into which rewards resonate most strongly with its passenger base.

The comprehensive Milestones recognition system represents Carnival’s commitment to acknowledging and rewarding guest loyalty in tangible ways.

By separating day-based recognition from spending-based rewards, the programme ensures that all loyal cruisers receive meaningful acknowledgement regardless of their budget or booking preferences.

Carnival Corporation Completes Major Pier Extension To Double Ship Capacity At Celebration Key

Carnival Corporation has finished a major pier extension at Celebration Key.

This project doubles the exclusive destination’s capacity from two ships to four, enabling more than 13,000 guests to visit daily.

Carnival Celebration Key

The Phase 2 expansion, completed ahead of schedule less than a year after the Grand Bahama Island destination opened in July 2025, will add approximately 200 ship calls and 700,000 guest visits annually.

Princess Cruises and AIDA Cruises are preparing to make their first calls this autumn.

Rapid Expansion Following Strong Initial Demand

Celebration Key has proven remarkably successful since launching, prompting Carnival Corporation to accelerate infrastructure improvements at the private port.

The new pier extension brings the total berth count to four, significantly increasing the destination’s ability to handle multiple ships simultaneously.

Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation, highlighted the strategic importance of the project.

“Celebration Key is one of the centrepieces of our Paradise Collection – a bold destination built to redefine what a Caribbean holiday can feel like,” he said.

The completion ahead of schedule reflects both the strong performance of the destination and Carnival Corporation’s commitment to meeting escalating demand.

Weinstein noted that finishing early “gives us a real jump on meeting the extraordinary demand we’re seeing and allows us to bring even more guests to this unique Bahamian paradise sooner than expected.”

Multi-Ship Days Becoming The New Normal

Beginning in September 2026, Celebration Key will routinely host three- and four-ship days as the expanded infrastructure comes fully online.

This represents a substantial operational shift from the destination’s initial two-berth configuration.

The destination currently serves as a regular port of call for 20 Carnival Cruise Line ships sailing from 10 different US homeports. The additional capacity will allow the line to optimise itineraries and offer more sailings featuring the exclusive destination.

The expansion also provides Carnival Corporation with greater scheduling flexibility as it prepares to introduce additional brands to the destination.

This diversification will help maximise the investment whilst spreading guest traffic across different fleet segments.

Princess Cruises Set To Launch Service In November 2026

Princess Cruises will become the first Carnival Corporation brand beyond Carnival Cruise Line to call at Celebration Key.

Star Princess, measuring 177,800 gross tonnes, is scheduled to make the inaugural visit on 1st November 2026, during a roundtrip Caribbean cruise departing from Fort Lauderdale.

Star Princess looking alive with the sunset as it shines its prominent lights

Following Star Princess, several other Princess vessels will add Celebration Key to their itineraries. Caribbean Princess, Regal Princess, Sky Princess, and Sun Princess will all utilise the expanded pier facilities.

These Princess ships will bring passengers from two major Florida homeports – Port Canaveral near Orlando and Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

The dual-port strategy will allow Princess to offer Celebration Key as a destination option across multiple Caribbean itinerary patterns.

AIDA Cruises Following With November Debut

AIDA Cruises, Carnival Corporation’s German market brand, will make its Celebration Key debut shortly after Princess Cruises.

AIDAdiva is scheduled to arrive on 9th November 2026, during a Caribbean sailing that originates from New York City. AIDAluna will follow one week later, arriving on 16th November 2026, also sailing from New York City.

AIDAnova

The introduction of AIDA Cruises to Celebration Key represents an expansion of the destination’s appeal to European cruise passengers.

The AIDA calls demonstrate Carnival Corporation’s strategy of leveraging the destination across its global portfolio rather than restricting it exclusively to the North American market.

This approach maximises return on the substantial infrastructure investment whilst offering AIDA passengers access to a premium Bahamian experience.

Projected Visitor Numbers Show Substantial Growth

By the time Celebration Key celebrates its first anniversary on 19th July 2026, Carnival Corporation expects the destination to have welcomed approximately 2.5 million guests during its inaugural year of operation.

With the expanded pier now complete and additional brands beginning service, projections for the second year show dramatic growth.

The company anticipates roughly 3.5 million visitors during year two – a 40% increase over the first year.

This million-guest increase demonstrates both the success of the destination concept and the impact of the infrastructure expansion.

The ability to accommodate four ships simultaneously, combined with the addition of Princess and AIDA calls, fundamentally transforms Celebration Key’s capacity and reach.

Economic Impact On Grand Bahama Island

Bahamian government officials have welcomed the pier expansion as a significant boost to Grand Bahama’s tourism economy. The increased capacity translates directly into more visitor spending and employment opportunities for local residents.

Celebration Key

Glenys Hanna Martin, the Bahamas’ minister of tourism, praised the development.

“Celebration Key’s expansion reflects continued confidence in Grand Bahama and in The Bahamas as a leading tourism destination,” she said.

Martin emphasised that the government’s priority extends beyond simple visitor numbers.

She noted that ensuring investments like Celebration Key create opportunities for local businesses, expand employment, and deliver lasting economic benefits remains central to the administration’s tourism strategy.

The additional 700,000 annual visitors expected from the pier expansion represent substantial economic activity for Grand Bahama, an island that has worked to rebuild its tourism infrastructure following hurricane damage in recent years.

Strategic Position Within Carnival Corporation Portfolio

Celebration Key occupies a central position in Carnival Corporation’s “Paradise Collection” of exclusive destinations.

The private port concept allows the company to control the entire guest experience whilst generating significant revenue from shore-side operations.

The destination was purpose-built to offer a refined Caribbean experience with multiple beach areas, dining venues, and activity zones spread across the property. Unlike traditional ports of call, exclusive destinations allow cruise lines to capture all guest spending rather than sharing it with local tour operators and businesses.

The rapid expansion from two to four berths underscores how critical Celebration Key has become to Carnival Corporation’s Caribbean deployment strategy.

The destination provides a differentiating feature that helps the company’s brands compete for bookings in the crowded Caribbean cruise market.

With Princess and AIDA joining Carnival Cruise Line ships at the destination, Celebration Key transitions from a single-brand amenity to a genuine multi-brand asset.

This evolution maximises the return on Carnival Corporation’s investment whilst offering passengers across different brands access to the exclusive Bahamian experience.

The completion of Phase 2 ahead of schedule positions Celebration Key for continued growth as Carnival Corporation’s newest and most ambitious private destination development.

Packing Tips for Travellers Who Struggle With Excessive Sweating – CruiseMiss.com

Travelling is exciting, but excessive sweating can add a few extra challenges along the way. I’ve had plenty of trips where I packed for the destination but forgot to pack for the high heat and humidity. After a few uncomfortable travel days, I learned that the right items can make a huge difference.

If you’re planning a trip and want to stay comfortable, here are the packing tips I always follow.

1. Pack Moisture-Wicking Clothes

One of the first changes I made was swapping cotton shirts for moisture-wicking fabrics. Cotton tends to absorb sweat and stay damp, which can feel uncomfortable for hours.

Quick-dry shirts, athletic wear, and lightweight travel clothing help me stay cooler and feel fresher throughout the day.

2. Bring Extra Shirts

I never pack just one shirt per day anymore.

Whether I’m sightseeing, taking public transportation, or spending time outdoors, there’s a good chance I’ll want a fresh shirt before the day is over. Packing an extra one or two doesn’t take much space and can make a big difference in comfort. This is especially true in tropical regions or when taking a dip in the ocean.

3. Wear Sweat-Proof Undershirts

This is one of the simplest tricks many people have found.

A good undershirt helps absorb moisture before it reaches your outer clothing. On long travel days, especially flights, it gives extra confidence and helps keep sweat marks less noticeable.

4. Pack Antiperspirant

Many people always carry a travel-size antiperspirant in my backpack.

There’s nothing worse than realising you need it and having to search for a store in an unfamiliar place. Keeping it within reach makes quick touch-ups easy during busy travel days.

5. Bring a Small Microfibre Towel

A microfibre towel might not sound exciting, but I never travel without one.

It’s lightweight, dries quickly, and is perfect for wiping down from my face and neck. Mine has probably saved me from looking completely overheated more times than I can count.

6. Choose Breathable Shoes

Comfortable shoes matter, especially if you’re walking a lot.

I usually choose lightweight sneakers made with breathable materials. My feet stay cooler, and I avoid that uncomfortable feeling that comes from wearing hot shoes all day.

7. Pack Extra Socks

This tip sounds basic, but it’s surprisingly effective.

Changing into a fresh pair of socks halfway through the day can feel amazing after hours of walking. I always keep an extra pair in my day bag just in case.

8. Carry Body Wipes

Not every travel day includes access to a shower.

Body wipes are one of those items I rarely think about until I need them. They’re great for freshening up after a long flight, a hot afternoon, or a crowded train ride.

9. Bring a Portable Fan

I’ll admit I used to laugh at people carrying portable fans.

Then I bought one for a summer trip and completely changed my mind. They’re small, rechargeable, and surprisingly useful when you’re standing in line under the sun or exploring a humid destination.

10. Pack Dark-Coloured Clothing

I’ve learned that dark colours are often more forgiving than lighter shades.

Navy, charcoal, and black tend to hide sweat marks better, which means I spend less time worrying about how I look and more time enjoying the trip.

11. Pack Simple Laundry Supplies

For longer trips, I always bring a small packet of travel detergent.

Being able to wash a shirt or pair of socks in the hotel sink means I can keep clothes fresh without overpacking. It’s a simple trick that has saved valuable luggage space more than once.

12. Carry a Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things we can do when traveling, especially if we’re sweating more than usual.

I carry a reusable water bottle everywhere and refill it whenever I get the chance. It helps me stay comfortable and keeps me from constantly buying bottled water. Where possible, I’ll carry two of these bottles.

13. Create a Sweat-Management Kit

Over the years, I’ve started keeping all my essentials together in one small pouch.

Mine usually includes antiperspirant, body wipes, tissues, a microfibre towel, and spare socks. It sounds simple, but having everything organised makes life much easier when you’re on the move.

Final Thoughts

Travelling with excessive heat can be frustrating at times, but it doesn’t have to ruin a trip. I’ve found that a little preparation goes a long way. Most of these items are inexpensive, easy to pack, and can make a noticeable difference in how comfortable you feel throughout your journey, especially when travelling in tropical regions.

These are the tips offered by myself and other readers, but every traveller is different. If you have your own favourite packing hack for dealing with excessive sweating, share it. Some of the best travel advice I’ve picked up over the years has come from fellow travellers who learned a few lessons the hard way.

What Really Happened To Hannah Smith On A Bahamas Carnival Cruise Shore Excursion

We are the attorneys representing Hannah Smith in her lawsuit against Carnival Cruise Line. Attorneys Tom Scolaro and Keith Brais are in active litigation against Carnival and the operators of the shore excursion that changed Hannah’s life on May 12, 2025. Anyone who has ever booked one of these excursions will see themselves in how Hannah’s day began. How it ended, and everything that was done to her along the way, is something every person who steps off a ship onto an excursion’s boat must know and understand.

We have all stood at a cruise line’s shore excursion desk or scrolled the excursion listings in the app, choosing between a beach day, a snorkel trip, or a catamaran sail. Hannah did the same thing. What happened to her afterward had little to do with a careless tourist and everything to do with the operation running that excursion. According to the complaint we filed, the staff set a young woman up to be harmed, and Carnival profited from sending passengers to them.

A Graduate, a Celebration, and a Beach Day That Was Never What It Seemed

Hannah was 22 years old. Two weeks earlier, she had graduated summa cum laude from Miles College in Alabama, and the cruise was her reward to herself. She boarded the Carnival Celebration out of Miami with a close friend, the way thousands of people start a vacation every week of the year.

In the Bahamas, she and her friend booked an excursion Carnival sold as the Pearl Island Beach Escape; now renamed Sun Cay Beach Club with Lunch. Carnival marketed its excursion partners the way it always does, describing them as carefully chosen, dependable, the best available in each port. To a passenger reading that language in the app, it sounds like the cruise line has done the vetting for you. That impression is the whole point of how these excursions are sold, and it is central to why Carnival is a defendant in this case.

What the Excursion Staff Did Once Hannah Was Ashore

Here is where the version most people have heard, the one built around a propeller and a tragic accident, falls apart. By the time Hannah was anywhere near that propeller, the staff running the excursion had spent more than an hour systematically stripping away her ability to keep herself safe.

It started almost the moment she arrived. An employee handed her a large rum punch, sixteen ounces of it, before she had done much more than step onto the sand. The drinks did not stop there, and they escalated fast. On three separate occasions, a worker had Hannah tilt her head back so he could pour liquor directly into her mouth from an upended liter bottle. No one was letting Hannah pace herself at an open bar. Staff were pouring alcohol into a young woman as fast as she could swallow it.

The complaint we filed alleges something worse than overserving. It alleges that at least one of those drinks was spiked with a substance of the type used to facilitate sexual assault, a sedative that flattens awareness and judgment and leaves a person unable to protect herself. On top of the alcohol and the drug, the staff handed Hannah and her companions marijuana, two joints, all of it free of charge. The entire sequence unfolded in roughly seventy minutes.

While they were doing this, the same employees were separating Hannah’s group from everyone else. They offered the group a private oceanfront cabana, the kind that normally rents for several hundred dollars, and gave it to them at no cost. Picture what that accomplishes. A young woman is being plied with alcohol and, as alleged, a sedating drug, and at the same time she is being moved away from the crowd, away from witnesses, into a secluded space. Inside that isolation, one of the workers pressed himself against Hannah’s friend, who shoved him off and told him to stop.

By the time the group was loaded onto the catamaran for the return trip to Nassau, Hannah’s blood alcohol had been driven far past any legal limit, a sedative was working through her, and she could no longer look after herself. The people who had put her in that condition knew exactly what state she was in, because they were the ones who created it.

The Ride Back, and the Moment Everything Broke

On the catamaran, impaired and disoriented, Hannah needed to use a restroom. She asked a crew member where to go. He told her to use the water. It was the same instruction she had been given on the island, where staff had told guests, in plain terms, that the ocean was their toilet.

So that is what she did. Following what the crew had told her, badly impaired, she lowered herself off the back of the vessel from the aft dive platform and into the water. The captain was sitting at a raised helm with a clear, unobstructed view of those platforms. With Hannah in the water on that side of the boat, he put the engine into gear. No one sounded a horn. No one warned her. No crew member was posted at the stern to watch for a passenger in the water. The propeller caught her and pulled her in.

Injuries and Hospitalization

Hannah’s injuries are catastrophic in the literal sense of the word. The propeller amputated her left leg below the knee where she floated. It tore her right leg apart. Surgeons in Nassau and later in Miami tried to save that right leg through one operation after another, and they could not. They were forced to amputate it in stages, first below the knee, then above the knee with the removal of the femur, and finally at the hip joint itself in a procedure called a hip disarticulation, which removes the entire leg.

She reached the hospital in Nassau, having lost more than 60 percent of her blood. An air ambulance flew her to a trauma center in Miami, where her care ran past twenty-five separate operative procedures, more than twenty units of transfused blood, and a stretch in intensive care while her body fought multi-organ failure. She was not discharged until the middle of July, more than two months after a trip that was supposed to last seven days. The medical bills from that single hospital are already expected to exceed ten million dollars, and her care is nowhere near finished.

The Question Every Cruise Passenger Should Understand

If you take one practical thing from Hannah’s story, make it this: When a cruise line tells you it cannot be held responsible for a shore excursion because an outside company ran it, that statement is not the end of the matter, and very often it is not even true. We litigate these cases, and the cruise lines raise that same defense in nearly every one. It fails more often than the public realizes, and understanding why can change the entire course of a case.

Excursions are enormously profitable for cruise lines. They sell them aggressively, brand them as their own, and take a cut of every booking. The law has developed several doctrines to make sure a company that profits from an activity and vouches for its safety cannot simply walk away when that activity maims someone. Here is how those doctrines apply to what happened to Hannah.

When a cruise line presents an operator as its own

Hannah did not find this excursion through a vendor on a Nassau street. She booked it inside Carnival’s own app, paid Carnival directly, and picked up a Carnival-issued voucher at Carnival’s guest services desk on the ship. Carnival advertised the trip under its own Carnival Adventures brand, on the screens in the cabins, in the app, and through its crew, and it assured passengers that it had hand-selected the most reputable operators at every port.

Maritime law calls this apparent agency, sometimes agency by estoppel. When a cruise line holds an operator out as its agent, a passenger reasonably believes it, and the passenger relies on that belief to her detriment, the cruise line can be held responsible for the operator’s conduct. The doctrine exists for a simple reason. A company should not be allowed to collect the profit from a product it sells under its own name while disowning the danger that product carries. Hannah booked a Carnival experience because Carnival told her, at every step, that is what it was.

The duty to choose safe operators

A cruise line has to use reasonable care in deciding which operators it funnels its passengers toward. It cannot keep sending thousands of guests to a dangerous operation while ignoring what a basic inquiry would reveal.

This is where Hannah’s case becomes especially hard for Carnival. According to the complaint, the warning signs around this excursion went back at least six years before Hannah was hurt. Guests had left reviews describing exactly the dangers she would later face, including extreme overserving of alcohol and drug use by staff. One review carried a headline calling the place a dangerous dump and told people to stay away if they cared about their safety. Other reviews described the catamaran failing to tie off properly and running its engines while passengers climbed on and off, and they referenced a passenger hurt at that same boarding gap about a year before Hannah’s incident. The complaint also alleges that Carnival’s own officers, standing on the bridge of the Celebration at the Nassau pier, could watch the ferry’s dangerous practices with their own eyes. A company that keeps selling tickets to an operation with that record has made a choice it has to answer for.

The danger they had to disclose but never did

Closely tied to the duty to choose carefully is the duty to warn. When a cruise line knows, or should know, that an excursion carries a particular danger, it has to tell passengers. The complaint alleges Carnival did the opposite, and that it actively deleted and buried negative reviews of its Carnival Adventures excursions, so that a passenger like Hannah saw a curated wall of reassurance instead of the warnings other guests had tried to leave. Less than two months before Hannah’s trip, the United States State Department had issued a Bahamas travel advisory flagging boating safety and assault risks. Hannah was told none of it.

Two businesses, one profitable enterprise

Carnival and these operators were not strangers who happened to cross paths. They ran an ongoing and lucrative arrangement built on shared marketing, a shared flow of customers, and a shared interest in selling as many excursions as possible. When two businesses work that closely toward a common commercial goal, with shared control and shared profit, the law can treat them as engaged in a joint venture and hold the cruise line responsible for what happens inside that enterprise. Carnival booked this excursion thousands of times across many years and earned money on every single booking. That history is very difficult to reconcile with the claim that the operators were strangers to it.

Why “independent contractor” is not a shield

Carnival’s defense leans on two words, independent contractor, and the claim that it controlled nothing. Courts do not stop at the label on a contract. They examine what actually happened, how the excursion was marketed, who took the payment, what the passenger was told, how much the cruise line shaped the experience, and how intertwined the two companies really were. A clause calling an operator independent does not erase the duties a cruise line takes on by selling and vouching for the trip. Both excursion operators have already asked the court to dismiss the case on the theory that a Florida court has no power over foreign companies, and Carnival leans on the contractor label. These are familiar fights. We have spent years contesting them on behalf of injured passengers, and the legal ground here is well traveled.

If you want to understand these claims in more depth, our firm maintains detailed resources on shore excursion injuries and on cruise ship accidents generally, along with related areas such as cruise ship sexual assault. You can also see how we have resolved serious maritime cases on our results page.

The Operators and Their American Footprint

The two companies behind the excursion, Pearl Investment Management Group and Sun Cay, want to be treated as Bahamian businesses that no American court can touch, and both have moved to dismiss the case on that basis. The facts make that a hard sell. They operate through a web of connected entities with direct ties to Florida, including a Naples address and a South Florida phone number, and one affiliated website describes the business as United States based with its servers in this country. The excursion is sold almost entirely to American passengers through cruise lines headquartered around Miami, and the operators carried insurance specifically built to respond to lawsuits filed in South Florida. A business assembled to sell to Americans and woven into the American cruise market belongs in an American courtroom, which is exactly where the case now sits.

Who Hannah Is

It would be easy to let a case like this reduce Hannah to an injury list and a docket number. Anyone trying to understand what is truly at stake should know the person at the center of it.

She graduated with honors. She was an athlete who spent real time in the gym, someone whose sense of herself was bound up in what her body could do. Months into her recovery, after more than two dozen surgeries, she stood up at a survivors event held by the hospital that saved her and spoke in front of the doctors and nurses who had carried her through the worst of it. She chose to talk not about what was taken from her, but about what she had found.

In her own words, describing how she came back to herself, she said: “I chose to embrace my limb difference, and I chose to always look better than I feel.”

“I chose to embrace my limb difference, and I chose to always look better than I feel.” – Hannah Smith

She also wrote a poem about everything she has lived through, and it now sits in the public court record. We are not going to reproduce it here, because some writing deserves to be encountered whole, on its own terms, rather than mined for a line. It is enough to say the words are unflinching, and that they belong to a young woman confronting a loss most people will never have to imagine. Her family has stayed close throughout. Her father and stepmother relocated to be at her side, and her mother supports her from Tennessee while also caring for Hannah’s brother, who was paralyzed in a motorcycle crash.

If You Were There, We Need to Hear From You

Our investigation is ongoing, and the readers of this site may hold pieces of it. If you sailed on this excursion, or on any excursion run by these operators, we are asking you to come forward. We are specifically looking for anyone with firsthand knowledge of the following, especially involving anything that happened before May 12, 2025:

  • Excessive serving or handing out of alcohol to passengers on the Pearl Island excursion;
  • Distribution, sale, or use of marijuana or any other drug by excursion staff;
  • Any instance of a substance being slipped into a passenger’s drink on the Pearl Island excursion;
  • Unsafe or improper boarding and exiting on the catamaran ferry, including the boat failing to tie off or running its engines while passengers climbed on or off;
  • Inappropriate, aggressive, or sexual behavior by any Pearl Island or Sun Cay employee toward a guest;
  • Any earlier injury, near miss, or accident involving the catamaran ferry used by this excursion;
  • Any complaint made to Carnival, Pearl Island, or Sun Cay about any of the above.

Every account is treated in strict confidence. If any of this sounds familiar, please reach our firm through CruiseInjury.law. What you saw could matter more than you realize.

If This Happened to You

Hannah’s case is the one in the headlines, but the conduct behind it is not unique to a single beach in the Bahamas. If you or someone you love was hurt during a shore excursion on any cruise, the legal doctrines described above may apply to your situation too. A cruise line that branded the excursion, sold it, and assured you it was safe does not get to disappear the moment you are injured, and an injury that happened in another country does not put that cruise line beyond the reach of U.S. courts.

These cases are also time sensitive. Cruise ticket contracts routinely shorten the window to file and often require written notice of a claim within months of the injury, so the sooner a case is reviewed, the better it can be built. Reach our team through CruiseInjury.law for a confidential conversation about what happened and what your options are.

Dave Ramsey Responds to Son of Grieving Widow

On most mainstream cruise lines, art galleries and art auctions are a staple of the onboard experience. In fact, the first art auction I attended was on a cruise ship.

While you rarely just stumble into an active art auction by accident (unless you’re just wandering around the promenade looking for something to do), you definitely cannot miss the reminders.

Cruise ship art gallery and cruise ships docked in port

From flyers left in your stateroom to highlights in the daily itinerary planner, cruise lines like to promote these events. And attending them can be a really fun way to spend a sea day, especially when they throw in a complimentary beverage or even a chance to win something.

But a recent call on The Ramsey Show is getting a lot of attention, and it’s serving as a warning to impulse buyers or cruisers who might not have done their homework before bidding up on cruise ship art.

A caller named Jack dialed into the show to speak with financial experts Dave Ramsey and George Kamel. Jack then shared the shocking amount his widowed mother spent on cruise ship art after just a handful of cruises.

According to Jack, after his father passed away, his mother took a series of six to seven cruises.

While onboard, she started buying art like it was on clearance. By the time Jack and his brother realized what was happening, she had spent a staggering $1.1 million on cruise ship art.

From Frugal to “So Much Cruise Ship Art”

What made whole thing a head-scratcher was the fact that the widow was usually extremely tight with her finances.

Jack told Ramsey that she had always been a very frugal person.  She was the type who would literally “use the same tea bag twice.”

But the grief of losing her husband proved to be a possible trigger for this buying spree.

Because she hid the bulk of the art in her garage at first, Jack and his family had no idea how much money was put into the art at first.

Eventually, the art collection grew so big that it spilled over into the living areas.

“You can’t get into her house. There’s so much cruise ship art in the bedrooms and everything,” Jack said.

The Resale Market

The real issue comes down to what happens after the cruise ends. Now that their mother has stopped buying, Jack and his brother have been trying to liquidate the art collection through traditional land-based auctions to get some of her money back.

The result? According to Jack, they are only recouping 10 to 20 cents on the dollar, although it wasn’t clear exactly where the sons were trying to sell the art.

It’s important to note that the estimated appraisal values you hear on a cruise ship do not automatically reflect what the art is worth on the open market. You should buy an art piece because you just really like it and not because you’re trying to flip it.

Onboard purchases can have some retail markups, buyer’s premiums, and shipping fees. After all, you still have to get the paintings home.

But when you try to resell those pieces later, finding a collector willing to pay what you paid on the ship can be prove to be challenging.

As Dave Ramsey summarized to Jack: “This was her wicked weird way of grieving.”

Dave Ramsey’s Advice to the Family

Ramsey recommended that Jack bypass retail options and get in touch directly with the cruise line’s public relations or corporate customer service team.

He said to explain that the cruise line (which was not mentioned) may have inadvertently taken advantage of  the widow. Because the cruise line has ongoing art auctions across its entire fleet, he said they could take the inventory back, put it back on the ships, and resell it to future passengers.

“If my company had done this accidentally, we would probably consider at least at some percentage, 50% or something, taking the inventory back in and trying to help the lady out,” Ramsey stated.

Bottom Line

I love cruise ships, and I love the onboard activities that make cruising so much fun. Plenty of cruisers walk away from these auctions with beautiful pieces they absolutely love and proudly display on their walls for a lifetime.

I’ve also met some really great people working at the art galleries on a cruise ship, and they’re usually very helpful in teaching you a few things about an artist or particular piece.

But this story is a good reminder for the cruise community. Buy art because you genuinely love looking at it and want it in your home. Maybe it’s not the best financial investment.  And even if it is, you should at least be aware of what you’re buying.

And if you have an older or grieving loved one heading out on a cruise, it might be worth having a gentle conversation about keeping tabs on the vacation budget before they head up the gangway.
