Caught On Camera: Massive Brawl Ends With 16 Passengers Blacklisted

A massive fight broke out at PortMiami on Monday, June 15, when two groups of people were passing through the United States Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) checkpoint at the Florida cruise terminal — a brawl captured on video that Carnival says has led to 16 people being added to its Do Not Sail list.

Published videos of the incident show two groups of people — reportedly departing a Carnival Cruise Line sailing — who began arguing as they passed through the PortMiami U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) checkpoint on Monday. The video clip posted on social media appears to show the confrontation escalating in the terminal concourse near the debarkation area.

According to the footage, the argument turned physical and a large brawl broke out — several people were punched and kicked before bystanders and border protection officers intervened. It’s not clear from the video how many people were injured; no serious injuries have been reported so far.

The Miami‑Dade Sheriff’s Department told reporters that none of those involved chose to press charges after the incident. Local authorities stated the encounter occurred in the CBP checkpoint/debarkation area, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Miami‑Dade units were on scene to secure the area.

Carnival Responds: 16 Passengers Are Placed on Do Not Sail List Following Conquest Voyage

A Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson told NBC Miami the altercation involved two “families” who were passing through the CBP checkpoint following a Carnival Conquest voyage. Carnival confirmed it has placed 16 people connected to the incident on its Do Not Sail list pending review.

What that means: being added to Carnival’s Do Not Sail list effectively bans people from booking future Carnival sailings until the line completes its review. Affected passengers typically lose booking privileges and may face denial of boarding; Carnival’s customer relations team handles appeals and next steps for those impacted.

Cruise line bans like this are increasingly common after terminal or onboard incidents. If you’re booked on a Carnival cruise, check your booking status and Carnival’s policy pages for details on the sail list and how to contact customer support about appeals or account holds.

Previous Carnival Incidents Resulted in Lifetime Passenger Bans

This isn’t an isolated incident for the cruise line. In 2025, Carnival placed 24 people on its Do Not Sail list after a massive brawl broke out in a terminal, and a few months later, it banned additional passengers following a separate onboard fight.

See Video Below (Please note the profanity, and the video is disturbing)

And also, this major incident made headlines as a very similar large brawl happened in April 2025 as guests disembarked at the Galveston Cruise Terminal:

Those earlier incidents — one that occurred in a customs line at a U.S. port and another after a ship docked following a trip to the Bahamas — underline how quickly Carnival moves to ban people involved in violent incidents.

Cruise Safety Debate Reignites as Attorney Demands Action

We recently spoke with Attorney Tom Scolaro, founding partner of Scolaro Law in Miami, who focuses on personal injury and maritime law and has represented numerous clients in cruise-related cases. We asked him to share his perspective on what he believes is a growing trend.

According to Scolaro, “The rise of onboard crime, assaults, and worse aboard cruise ships is entering epidemic territory. These should be fun-filled, relaxing family vacations, and not a place where passengers should be worried about getting attacked or violated. The cruise ship industry at large has proven itself both indifferent and incompetent in curbing the rise of violent crime aboard its ships. The industry is on notice—it is high time it took this safety issue seriously

AmaWaterways Unveils First Look At AmaRudi, Europe’s Largest River Cruise Ship

AmaWaterways has revealed the first details and official renderings of AmaRudi, its highly anticipated second double-width river cruise ship. Set to debut on the Danube River in spring 2027, the new vessel will build on the innovative design introduced with its sister ship, offering guests an even more spacious and luxurious way to explore Europe’s iconic waterways.

Europe’s Largest River Cruise Ship

Building on the groundbreaking design of AmaMagna, which redefined expectations for river cruising when it launched in 2019, AmaRudi will stand alongside its sister ship as the largest river cruise ship in Europe. Designed to accommodate just 196 guests in 98 staterooms and suites, the new vessel will offer an extraordinary amount of personal space, multiple dining venues, expansive wellness amenities and thoughtfully designed public spaces inspired by the destinations along the Danube River.

AmaRudi is the first vessel in the company’s history named after a man, honoring co-founder Rudi Schreiner, whose pioneering vision helped shape the modern river cruise industry. Born and raised near Austria’s Danube River, Schreiner spent his childhood exploring the very river that will become AmaRudi’s home.

“AmaMagna changed what travelers believed was possible on a river cruise ship,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and Chairman of AmaWaterways. “We knew there would be a right time to revisit that concept, and with river cruising continuing to grow, that time is now. More travelers are making the transition from ocean cruising to rivers, and many are looking for a sense of space and choice. AmaMagna was one of the most rewarding projects of my career, so having this new ship carry my name makes it especially meaningful. I see it as part of the legacy we have built together over more than two decades of river cruising.”

The design concept for AmaRudi blends contemporary elegance, exceptional comfort and subtle historical references inspired by the cities and cultures found along the Danube River. While building on the spacious double-width design first introduced with AmaMagna, the ship will debut several new features and guest experiences.

Culinary Delights

Dining will be at the heart of the AmaRudi experience, with multiple venues ranging from the Journey’s Restaurant and The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant to al fresco dining experiences and the intimate Rudi’s Wine Bar, a welcoming gathering place inspired by Schreiner’s passion for wine and European culture. Complementing these venues is AmaWaterways’ enhanced dining experience, including complimentary beer, soft drinks and a curated selection of more than 30 wines available during lunch and dinner, as well as new Italian lunch menus served in The Chef’s Table. A built-in Deck Club barbecue on the Sun Deck will further expand the ship’s dining options.

Wellness & Recreation

Guests will have access to an expansive wellness area featuring massage treatment rooms, hair and nail services, a state-of-the-art fitness center and dedicated spaces for relaxation. Guided by AmaWaterways’ dedicated Wellness Hosts, guests can enjoy a variety of fitness classes and wellness programming both onboard and ashore. The Sun Deck will also feature a full-sized pickleball court, providing even more opportunities to stay active while enjoying the scenery along the Danube.

Entertainment

AmaRudi will introduce an entirely new entertainment concept created exclusively for the ship. Designed as a vibrant social hub, the versatile venue will feature a cinema, karaoke, billiards and a jukebox, while thoughtful soundproofing ensures guest comfort throughout the vessel.

As with all new AmaWaterways vessels, sustainability will play an important role in AmaRudi’s design and operation. The ship will feature advanced Stage V engines, solar panels, shore power connectivity, spud poles and lightweight construction materials designed to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact while navigating Europe’s waterways.

“AmaRudi reflects our confidence in the future of river cruising and our continued commitment to innovation,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “From the moment AmaMagna launched, travelers and travel advisors have been asking if we would ever build another ship like her. With AmaRudi, we’re taking that concept even further. There is tremendous opportunity to continue pushing the boundaries of what a river cruise ship can be while preserving the exceptional service and intimate experience that have defined our company for more than two decades.”

Since its debut, AmaMagna has remained one of the most talked-about ships in the industry, earning praise for its spacious accommodations, expanded dining options and innovative design.

AmaRudi is scheduled to begin sailing the Danube River in spring 2027. The ship will operate some of AmaWaterways’ most popular Danube itineraries. Additional details regarding accommodations, onboard experiences and booking information will be announced in the coming months.

Another Cruise Canceled After Full-Ship Charter Takes Over Sailing

Just two weeks after we reported that Celebrity Cruises canceled a cruise because it had been chartered, Royal Caribbean has sent out a similar notification for Allure of the Seas.

Guests who had booked the March 7, 2027, sailing on the Oasis-class ship were sent notifications from the cruise line stating that their cruise was officially canceled.

The reason? The entire 5,718 double-capacity ship has been booked by a private charter.

The email from Royal Caribbean stated the following:

“We’re reaching out to let you know that, regrettably, we must cancel our March 7, 2027, Allure of the Seas sailing, as it has been chartered.”

The cruise line acknowledged it’s not ideal and apologized for the disruption to vacation plans.

Although it’s not the message you want to receive after weeks of planning and preparation for a cruise, Royal Caribbean is giving impacted guests a few options to sweeten the pot a bit.

Royal Caribbean is offering several options:

  • Automatic rebooking on the March 21, 2027 sailing (same ship, same itinerary) with your original stateroom protected at the lower of your original fare or current pricing. The only different is that the cruise departs 2 weeks later.
  • A nice onboard credit: $100 for interior/oceanview/balcony cabins, $200 for suites, plus $50 extra per third and additional guest.
  • Full refund option with no penalties if you’d rather cancel and go a different route.
  • Waived change fees and some help with non-refundable transportation costs (up to $200–$400 per person depending on domestic/international).

If you do nothing, they’ll move you over to the later sailing. Not perfect, especially if you had specific dates locked in because of your schedule’s availability, but it’s better than getting left high and dry.

So What’s Going On With All These Charters?

Private companies and groups have been chartering ships for years. It’s not a new thing. But they do seem to be popping up more often lately, especially on larger ships like Allure of the Seas and Celebrity Equinox.

Often charters are just for part of the ship, but I’ve been seeing more full ship charters taking over sailings in the last few months.

In this case, the ship has been chartered by Atlantis Events for an all-gay Caribbean cruise.

Is This Becoming More Common?

It’s not unheard of, but it’s happening more on popular ships and popular itineraries.

Cruise lines love the guaranteed revenue from a full charter, and with demand for private events growing, we might see a few more of these pop up in the coming years.

For any sailings that are at least a year out, it’s important to have those notifications from the cruise line turned on.  As we always say, it’s important to have flexible travel plans, and travel insurance is pretty much a must these days.

While Royal Caribbean is doing more than their fair share to compensate impacted cruisers in this case, other travel costs that you might have booked on your own might have to come out of pocket. That’s where “cancel for any reason” travel insurance can give you some peace of mind when you spend several thousand dollars on a much-needed vacation.

16 Carnival Cruisers Hit with Lifetime Ban After Fight in Customs Line

A viral video of a huge fight near customs in PortMiami has been spreading like wildfire online. After the arrival of Carnival Conquest, a massive brawl broke out that reportedly began between two families.

Carnival conquest port Miami

A cruise vacation is supposed to be a relaxing experience, and the goal is to come back refreshed and recharged. But for more than a dozen cruisers, it was the post-cruise customs line that set the stage for a massive fight.

By now, a few videos of the fight have surfaced. Phone cameras captured part of the fight as pushing, shoving, grappling, and punching ensued in the chaos of the moment.

According to news reports, two women started the fight. One dressed in a black dress went under a divider and began throwing fists at another woman in polka dot pajamas.

Another individual joined in the fight and grabbed the hair of one of the women.

The fighting individuals struggled to stay on their feet as the video shows them in their bare feet or just socks on the tile floor.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection got involved to try to break up the fight even as several more people joined in the brawl and create even more chaos.

Besides fists and elbows, luggage was also flying. In one video a suitcase can be seen being tossed into the fray.

The fight went on for a few minutes before it was finally peaceful again, but the damage had been done for at least 16 people who are now banned from Carnival Cruise Line for life.

None of the people involved decided to press charges so no arrests were made. There is no clear answer as to what exactly started the fight, and no serious injuries were reported.

According to a statement sent to DailyMail, the cruise line stated,

“The incident occurred in the debarkation area under the authority of US Customs and Border Patrol. We are appreciative of law enforcement’s swift response and handling of the matter. We do not tolerate such behavior.”

The incident does not seem to have impacted the next cruise on Carnival Conquest as the 2,980 double-capacity ship was able to leave on schedule on a 4-day sailing to The Bahamas.

How Carnival Cut Fuel Consumption by 5.6% to Fight Soaring Oil Prices

In today’s earnings call, Carnival Corporation announced that they actually cut fuel consumption by 5.6% to help combat rising fuel costs.

Even though the cruise line’s stock is down along with the overall market today, the numbers on the top and bottom line were surprisingly good.

High gas prices are bad news for cruise operators.  And with the price of a barrel of oil spiking in the last couple months due to the conflict in Iran, cruise lines have had to get creative in order to maintain profit margins.

Combating Higher Oil Prices

Let’s look at Carnival’s (CCL) actual net income, keeping in mind that Carnival Corp is the parent company of cruise lines like Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Cunard Line, P&O Cruises, and of course Carnival Cruise Line.

On the company’s earnings call today, Chief Financial Officer David Bernstein gave some insight into the brand’s ability to keep profits growing despite the major energy headwinds, saying:

“Net income of $569 million was more than 20% higher than the prior year, despite a nearly 30% increase in our fuel price.”

Walking away with a 20% profit jump when your fuel bill spikes by almost a third is a pretty impressive feat. It shows that the company is finding ways to run smarter and save money where it counts.

The Battle for Efficiency

A major part of that savings came directly from the engine rooms and navigation bridges.

Carnival did not just luck into these numbers. They actively cut back on how much fuel their ships burn.

CEO Josh Weinstein emphasized this focus on efficiency during the call, pointing out that this quarter’s success builds on previous conservation efforts:

“Fuel efficiency improved by more than 5%, building on last year’s over 6% efficiency gain and further supporting our cost performance. What stands out most is that we achieved these results despite operating through a period of extreme geopolitical volatility, consumer sentiment at historically low levels, and unusually high fuel prices.”

David Bernstein later clarified exactly how much this specific green initiative padded the bottom line, adding that part of their financial outperformance “came from improvements in depreciation expense and fuel consumption, where we delivered an over 5% year-over-year reduction.”

Back in 2022, Carnival signed a major fleet-wide deal to aggressively roll out air lubrication systems.  This is a tech that basically pumps a continuous layer of tiny bubbles under the ship’s hull so it glides through the water with way less friction.  This means better fuel efficiency.

On top of that, they are using automated “Power Saver Packs” across the fleet. These are upgrades that overhaul the ship’s heating and air conditioning systems to run much more efficiently.

Even small changes, when rolled out across more than 90 ships across all brands, can make a big difference.

Guidance

While Carnival did move their full-year earnings expectations up by a tiny penny, they also had to admit that ongoing global tensions are forcing itinerary changes in Europe. And this is putting pressure on their upcoming revenue.

David Bernstein noted that “Cruise costs without fuel per ALBD are now expected to be up approximately 1.3% on a normalized basis…” for the full year.

When investors see upcoming costs creeping up while future growth is being trimmed, they get a little nervous.

What This Means for Your Next Cruise

For the average cruiser, this is exactly what you want to hear. When a cruise line figures out how to absorb a 30% spike in oil prices through pure efficiency and smart cost control, it protects the consumer from higher fare prices, or at least it should.

It means they don’t have to slap high fuel surcharges onto your booking or hike up other prices to keep their heads above water.

Just a couple months ago StarDream Cruises announced they were adding a $19 to $26 per person fuel surcharge for their Asian itineraries. The big 3 cruise lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian) have stated they have no plans to add a fuel surcharge.

So far, it looks like Carnival is filling ships (at 104% occupancy from this earnings report), passengers are spending money, and the fleet is fairly lean.

American Maverick Joins Fleet As American Cruise Lines’ Second New Ship Of 2026

American Cruise Lines celebrated the christening of its newest vessel, the American Maverick, during the ship’s inaugural 9-day New England Islands cruise. The ceremony took place in Newport, Rhode Island, as the ship sailed a round-trip itinerary from Providence, bringing together guests, crew members, local community partners, and employees from the company’s Connecticut headquarters.

The onboard celebration marked an important milestone for American Cruise Lines as the newest addition to its growing fleet officially entered service. Set against the backdrop of New England’s historic coastline, the event highlighted the line’s continued investment in small-ship cruising throughout the United States.

American Cruise Lines’ Second New Ship of 2026

American Maverick is the newest small cruise ship in the country and the latest in the company’s growing fleet of ships exclusively designed for cruising the U.S.A., featuring amenities that surpass those of the finest riverboats in the world. American Maverick will be followed by the deliveries of American Ranger, American Mariner, and American Navigator over the next year. American Cruise Lines also launched the country’s newest riverboat, American Encore, in May.

American Maverick’s christening festivities took place on a glorious sunny day overlooking Newport Harbor with many people close to the company, including more than 50 employees from the Line’s home office in Guilford, CT. American’s President & CEO, Charles B. Robertson, gave remarks as did American Maverick’s Godmother, Susan Renner, American’s Board Chair and Treasurer. All christening attendees gathered on American Maverick’s top deck for the official blessing and ceremonial bottle smash, followed by a traditional New England lobsterbake at Fort Adams State Park just steps from where the ship was docked.

“We set the bar high for ourselves with American Maverick and were surprised to see that we set the bar for the rest of the river cruise industry in the process,” said Charles B. Robertson, President & CEO of American Cruise Lines. “The American Maverick is the new standard by which others should follow and with 8 more ships under construction, shows that the U.S. river cruise market will lead the way.”

Brand new American Maverick accommodates 130 guests. The small ship features 4 decks, all-private balcony staterooms, including singles and suites, plus, numerous spacious lounges (including a top deck lounge with a walking track), a chart room, a main restaurant and a casual café, as well as a fitness center, among other onboard amenities unusual for cruise ships of this size.

American Maverick now takes the mantle as the newest cruise ship built in the U.S.A., but it is also the latest in a long line of innovative new small ships introduced by American Cruise Lines.

The company’s 100% U.S.-flagged fleet and total dedication to the development of the domestic cruise market honors the true spirit of American ingenuity and innovation. This 4th of July, as the country celebrates its 250th birthday, American will have more domestic itineraries and more new small ships exploring along U.S. waterways than at any other time in the company’s 50-year history.

Quark Expeditions Unveils New Arctic 2028 And Antarctic 2028/2029 Adventures

Quark Expeditions has unveiled its Arctic 2028 and Antarctic 2028/2029 seasons—its earliest-ever itinerary launch in the company’s 35-year history. The new lineup features more than 70 voyages across the Arctic and Antarctica, giving travelers even more opportunities to experience some of the world’s most remote destinations. Highlights include the debut of a Guided Photography Program, Quark’s first-ever Expedition Extensions, a new Canadian Arctic sailing through the legendary Northwest Passage, and the return of the popular Tundra to Table culinary experience, created in partnership with Greenland’s acclaimed Igapall chef collective.

“What makes the polar regions so powerful is that no two experiences are ever the same,” said Sam Seward, President of Quark Expeditions. “This season gives travelers even more opportunities to engage with these destinations through exploration, learning, wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences, while staying true to the spirit of adventure that has defined Quark Expeditions for more than 35 years.”

All-New: Guided Photography Program

Launching across both Antarctic 2028/2029 and Arctic 2028, the Guided Photography Program builds on Quark’s long-standing commitment to photography and field-based learning in the polar regions. Developed with support from Quark’s experienced expedition team, the program offers dedicated instruction and small-group access designed around the unique conditions of polar photography. Each excursion is capped at 16 participants, led by a dedicated Lead Photo Guide, and structured around four key elements:

  • Priority Zodiac positioning for optimal field angles
  • Slower-paced field time designed around shooting conditions
  • Daily workshops and image reviews with the Lead Photo Guide
  • A learn-shoot-share cadence throughout the expedition

All-New: Expedition Extensions

As part of its commitment to offering travelers more ways to explore, Quark is introducing its first-ever Expedition Extensions. Available before and after select voyages, the curated experiences showcase the landscapes, cultures, and communities that serve as gateways to the polar regions. Highlights include guided exploration of Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, visits to Iguazu Falls, wellness experiences in Finland, and journeys through Iceland’s volcanic landscapes.

Antarctic 2028/2029: Science, Wildlife, and the Sub-Antarctic

Accessible by helicopter from Ultramarine and subject to ice conditions, Snow Hill Island remains one of the most exclusive wildlife experiences in Antarctica.

Research and conservation remain central to the season. Ari Friedlaender of the Friedlaender Lab at the University of California, San Diego, returns for the Antarctic Marine Mammals voyage aboard World Voyager, where guests can engage directly with marine mammal research, contribute to citizen science initiatives focused on whale identification, and listen to whale vocalizations through portable hydrophones.

Across both seasons, Quark will provide 470 cruise nights to research partners and scientists conducting fieldwork in the polar regions, supporting ongoing wildlife, conservation, and climate research initiatives. Confirmed partners include Seabird Watch, SmartICE, Penguin Watch, and Saving Marion Island’s Seabirds.

Arctic 2028: Five Regions, New Itineraries, and the Return of Tundra to Table

New for 2028, a Canadian Arctic voyage explores the remote Northwest Passage, continuing Quark’s tradition of bringing travelers to some of the most remote and least-visited regions on Earth. The itinerary features visits to Arctic Bay and Lancaster Sound and expands access to one of the Arctic’s most legendary expedition routes.

Beyond the new voyage, Arctic 2028 spans five regions: Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland, the Canadian Arctic, and Atlantic Canada, showcasing extraordinary wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and diverse cultures.

Returning for four Arctic 2028 voyages aboard Ultramarine, Tundra to Table explores Indigenous food traditions and culinary storytelling. Co-developed with Quark’s partners at Igapall, the program highlights regional ingredients, local perspectives, and the cultural traditions that shape life in the North.

Past guests received exclusive early access beginning June 16, 2026, before public bookings open on June 23, 2026. An Early Booking Bonus will be available for travelers who reserve while inventory lasts.

Cruiser Misses Embarkation for Cruise Ship, Gives Advice

A cruiser had his passport stolen in Rome just days before he was supposed to hop on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. He missed the first day of his vacation but still managed to catch up with the ship and board successfully at the second port.

Here’s how it all happened and how you can make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

Norwegian Epic sailing out of CATANIA, ITALY

At Cruise Fever, we get questions all the time about passports. The most common point of contention is whether or not you should carry it with you off the ship. And in most cases, it really depends on the port.

The cruiser in this case shared the whole experience on a Reddit thread in r/Cruise, hoping it would help others who might face the same nightmare situation.

“I had a hard time finding any advice online that was helpful, so posting in case someone in the future experiences this and needs help,” he wrote.

His bag was on the ground at an outdoor cafe table while he sat on a low wall reading the menu. We might see this as the first problem.

Someone at the next table used their leg to subtly pull the bag closer. “I never saw or heard anything until I realized the bag was gone.”

And of course, the traveler’s passport and other important items were in the bag.

The timing could not have been worse. It was an American holiday weekend, which meant the U.S. Embassy was closed.

The emergency hotline mostly led to automated recordings, and the live operators he managed to reach were not very helpful. He had no choice but to wait until Monday morning to go to the embassy in person.

Once at the embassy, things moved much faster. “The process was simple enough,” he said. He brought a police report, his driver’s license, a photo of the stolen passport, and his travel plans.

They issued an emergency passport the same day. He quickly flew to Catania, caught up with the ship, and guest services helped him check in.

He also learned an important lesson about cruise lines: You need to notify them right away so they hold your reservation.

They would not confirm he could board later until they knew he had a replacement passport physically in hand.

Coliseum and famous fountain in Rome, Italy

What to Do If This Happens to You

If you lose your passport abroad right before or during a cruise, you must stay calm and act quickly. Here are the exact steps you need to take:

  • File a police report immediately: You will need this official documentation for the embassy and potential insurance claims.
  • Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate: Go as soon as they open. Bring photos of your documents, any secondary ID you still have, and your full travel itinerary.
  • Notify your cruise line or travel agent right away: Keep detailed notes and be persistent, as different customer service reps may give different answers. They must know you have valid travel documents before they will clear you to board at a later port.

One traveler who went through something similar years ago said that while getting in touch can be stressful, the embassy staff are typically very helpful once you actually get through to them.

Real-World Advice from Fellow Cruisers

From the comments in the original thread, experienced cruisers offered real-world advice for protecting your belongings in high-theft areas (like Rome).

One traveler wrote, “I usually just keep my bag/sling on my lap at restaurants with high theft.”

Another recommended, “Bags go between my feet and wrapped around one of my legs.”

Many suggested ditching traditional bags entirely in favor of a theft-resistant crossbody bag with locking zippers, a neck pouch worn under your shirt, or a thin money belt or fanny pack concealed under clothing.

“Always keep your passport, credit cards, and all your money on your body,” one person advised.

Protecting Your Documents

As a travel writer who has covered the cruise industry and global tourism for years, I would add two important things to this list:

First, always make color copies of your passport and important documents before you leave home. Store digital copies securely in your email or on a cloud drive accessible from your phone.

Having these digital backups makes getting a replacement at an embassy significantly faster.

Second, never underestimate the value of travel insurance that covers trip interruption and document replacement. It can provide peace of mind (something you overlook until you start stressing out) and often covers the extra costs of last-minute flights and hotels required to catch up with your ship.

The original poster didn’t say how much money was spent to catch up with the ship in this case, but I’m sure it wasn’t cheap since it was last minute.

Popular European ports like Rome, Barcelona, and Paris are famous for highly skilled pickpockets.

While a photo of your passport on your phone might work at some tourist attractions, countries like Italy require you to carry actual, physical ID. Do not take chances with it.

Losing your passport in a foreign country can be scary, but this story proves it does not have to end your vacation or be the end of the world.

File the report, get to the embassy early, communicate constantly with the cruise line, and use smarter ways to carry your valuables. A little extra caution goes a long way.

My biggest tip is just to always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded or extra touristy areas. Assume your bag or wallet is a target.

This doesn’t have to ruin your vacation though. You still want to marvel at ancient ruins and majestic sites without constant worry. That’s why making a habit of keeping your bag or wallet protected should become second nature.

Carnival Ship Forced To Skip Only Port Of Call Due To Lack Of Pilot

Carnival Splendor has been forced to cancel its sole port visit on a four-night voyage from Sydney after the cruise line’s pilotage provider could not supply a marine pilot to guide the ship into Moreton Bay, turning the short getaway into an unplanned cruise to nowhere.

Port Pilot

The 113,600-gross-ton vessel departed Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, 20th June, for what was scheduled as a brief cruise featuring a single port call at Moreton Island in Queensland on Monday, 22nd June.

Guests learned of the cancellation through public address announcements and letters delivered to their staterooms explaining the unusual circumstances.

“A marine pilot is required to be on board the ship as we enter and exit Moreton Bay to get to Moreton Island,” the letter stated. “Unfortunately, our pilotage provider has advised us that they will not be able to provide us with a pilot in time tomorrow, due to unexpected circumstances.”

What Marine Pilots Do And Why They’re Essential

Marine pilots – also known as maritime pilots or harbour pilots – are highly trained specialists with expert knowledge of specific waterways and the unique hazards each presents.

Their role is particularly critical in challenging environments like Moreton Bay, which features significant sandbanks, shallow channels, and other navigational obstacles requiring precise handling.

These pilots also coordinate movements with heavy marine traffic to ensure safe passage for large vessels. Without a qualified pilot available, cruise ships are legally prohibited from entering many ports and harbours, regardless of the captain’s experience or credentials.

The “unexpected circumstances” preventing the pilot’s availability have not been detailed publicly. Such situations typically arise from labour shortages, sudden illness, personal emergencies, or scheduling conflicts that leave pilotage providers unable to fulfil their commitments.

Ship Sails North But Cannot Enter Bay

Satellite tracking data shows Carnival Splendor did sail northward toward Moreton Island as originally planned.

However, the vessel turned south again without entering Moreton Bay, confirming the cancellation of the scheduled eight-hour port visit that was to run from 8 am to 6 pm.

With no alternative ports feasible on such short notice and within the cruise’s geographic area, the ship instead spent Monday as an unscheduled sea day. The vessel is expected to return to Sydney by 6:30 am on Wednesday, 24th June, as originally scheduled, with no other changes to the itinerary.

Guests Receive Onboard Credit As Compensation Gesture

While cruise lines typically do not offer compensation for itinerary changes beyond their control – such as weather disruptions, civil unrest, or mechanical issues – Carnival Cruise Line recognised the unique nature of this cancellation.

Moreton Island

Because Moreton Island was the only port of call on the four-night sailing, effectively transforming the voyage into a cruise to nowhere, the line offered a goodwill gesture to affected passengers.

Each stateroom is receiving a $100 AUD credit (approximately £50 or $70 USD) “as a gesture of appreciation” for guests’ understanding of the situation. This credit can be applied toward various onboard purchases, including beverages, retail shopping, spa treatments, speciality dining venues, photo packages, and other services.

Shore excursions booked directly through Carnival Cruise Line for Moreton Island are being automatically cancelled, with full refunds posted to guests’ onboard accounts.

However, passengers who arranged tours through independent operators will need to contact those companies directly to request cancellations and refunds, which may or may not be available depending on individual operator policies.

Pilot Availability Issues Occasionally Disrupt Cruise Operations

While relatively uncommon, pilot-related disruptions do occur periodically in the cruise industry. Labour disputes, staffing shortages on particularly busy days, or unexpected circumstances can leave ports without sufficient pilots to handle all scheduled vessel traffic.

Pilot boat

In some cases, cruise ships may experience delays rather than outright cancellations, waiting hours for a pilot to become available. In other situations, particularly when no alternative time slots exist or when weather windows are closing, port calls must be cancelled entirely.

The cruise industry relies heavily on local pilotage services, and most ports require pilots by law for vessels over certain sizes. This regulatory framework exists to protect sensitive marine environments, prevent groundings and collisions, and ensure the safety of crew, passengers, and local communities.

Safety Remains Top Priority In Port Operations

Cruise lines consistently prioritise safety when making port cancellation decisions, weighing risks to crew members, guests, and the communities they visit. This commitment extends to marine pilots and all personnel working at port and harbour facilities.

In February 2025, a harbour pilot fell into the ocean during rough seas whilst attempting to board Emerald Princess for a visit to Kauai, Hawaii. Although the pilot appeared uninjured, the port visit was cancelled as a precautionary measure, demonstrating the industry’s conservative approach to safety.

Weather conditions, mechanical issues, security concerns, and personnel availability all factor into these decisions. Whilst disappointing for passengers eager to explore destinations, cancellations reflect the complex logistics and safety considerations inherent in modern cruise operations.

The incident aboard Carnival Splendor highlights the interconnected nature of cruise operations and the various external services upon which cruise lines depend.

From pilots and tugboat operators to port authorities and local tour providers, successful port calls require coordination among numerous parties – and when one element fails, even well-planned itineraries can change without warning.

Princess Passenger Jailed After Identity Theft Scam Netted $20,000 From Onboard Casino

A passenger who used stolen identities to board Discovery Princess and fraudulently obtain $20,000 from the ship’s casino has been sentenced to more than four years in prison, bringing an end to a sophisticated scheme that federal authorities say stretched beyond a single cruise voyage.

Discovery Princess fraud Enrico Ronquillo

Enrico Ronquillo, 38, a Philippine national and lawful permanent resident of the United States, received a 53-month prison sentence on 17th June 2026 after pleading guilty to false impersonation and aggravated identity theft.

The court also ordered him to pay more than $25,000 in restitution and imposed one year of supervised release following his prison term.

The fraud was uncovered during a Princess Cruises sailing aboard the 4,600-guest Discovery Princess, which departed from Seattle.

Authorities say Ronquillo used multiple stolen identities and fraudulent documents to gain passage on the vessel before targeting the ship’s casino for a series of cash advances.

Federal investigators believe Ronquillo may have used stolen credit card information to pay for the cruise itself. Once onboard, he allegedly assumed at least two separate identities as part of a scheme designed to avoid detection.

Cash Withdrawals Spread Across Multiple Transactions

According to court documents, Ronquillo obtained approximately $20,000 from the casino through a series of transactions rather than a single large withdrawal.

To facilitate the withdrawals, he submitted a forged IRS Form W-9 using a victim’s name, signature and Social Security number. The document is required for certain financial transactions and allowed the withdrawals to proceed without immediately triggering fraud concerns.

Authorities said the strategy enabled Ronquillo to complete at least four separate cash advances before questions were raised about his identity.

The scheme came to an abrupt end on 14th May 2025 when Discovery Princess called at Juneau, Alaska. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer conducting routine checks noticed inconsistencies with the identification Ronquillo presented.

Investigators determined that Ronquillo’s appearance did not match the photograph on the ID card. A subsequent search uncovered multiple documents, including two birth certificates, a counterfeit California driver’s licence and a backpack containing a large amount of cash.

The evidence led to a federal indictment in June 2025 and ultimately to Ronquillo’s guilty plea.

Federal officials strongly criticised the offences following the sentencing.

“Mr Ronquillo knowingly used stolen identities and personal information of innocent U.S. citizens to gain passage on a cruise ship and enrich himself at its casino,” said U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman for the District of Alaska.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge Zachary Pomerantz of the FBI Anchorage Field Office added: “This fraudster stole the identity of a U.S. citizen and impersonated the victim whilst on board a cruise ship, where he then continued to commit financial fraud crimes on the high seas.”

Attempted Escape Led To Second Arrest

Authorities say Ronquillo intended to leave the cruise early and had already purchased an airline ticket departing from Juneau on the day he was arrested. During questioning, he reportedly admitted that he planned to share the proceeds with an accomplice based in Seattle.

The case took another dramatic turn after his initial arrest.

Port of Juneau in Alaska

Following his release on bail, Ronquillo allegedly removed his court-ordered electronic monitoring device and travelled to Juneau International Airport in an attempt to flee before trial.

He passed through airport security and reached his departure gate before officers from the Juneau Police Department arrested him for a second time.

He is currently being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Facility and is scheduled to appear in court on 16th July 2026 in connection with additional charges linked to the failed escape attempt.

Previous Cruise Ship Fraud Allegations

While prosecutors did not publicly detail all of Ronquillo’s previous cruise-related fraud schemes, court proceedings revealed that the Discovery Princess case was not his first attempt to exploit cruise lines.

One previously reported case dates back to 2023, when Ronquillo was arrested alongside Jaclyn Abaya after MSC Magnifica returned to PortMiami.

According to Miami-Dade police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers initially detained the pair after discovering that Abaya was wanted on an outstanding warrant. A search of their cabin allegedly uncovered methamphetamine and a credit card skimming device.

Further searches reportedly found altered and counterfeit birth certificates, fraudulent driver’s licences, counterfeit bank cards and materials allegedly used to manufacture fake identification documents.

Authorities also accused the pair of using seven different bank cards to pay nearly $13,000 in onboard charges during the voyage. Both were arrested on multiple felony charges, including organised fraud, trafficking in counterfeit credit cards and possession of equipment used to create fraudulent identification documents.

The earlier allegations, combined with Ronquillo’s admission that he had conducted similar schemes on other cruise ships, suggest investigators have been tracking a pattern of maritime-related fraud activity for several years.

The Discovery Princess case highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods criminals can use to target cruise ships, while also demonstrating the role played by customs officers and federal investigators in identifying fraudulent activity before suspects are able to leave port with stolen funds.
