Port of Seattle Approves Norwegian Cruise Deal That Promises 325,000 Passengers Annually

The Port of Seattle Commission has just approved a long-term lease amendment with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH), which will extend the company’s presence in Seattle through 2035.

Norwegian Joy in Seattle cruise port Pier 66

The contract requires the brand’s cruise lines to bring a minimum of 325,000 paying passengers to the city every year for the next nine years.

This agreement helps secure an estimated $116 million in revenue for the Port over the next decade.

On top of that, if the partnership meets certain environmental targets, there is an option to extend the contract through 2045, bringing total revenues for the port up to $316 million.

What the Passenger Guarantee Means for Seattle

Seattle has had a colorful history when it comes to the cruise industry.  And while protests have attempted to thwart the city’s port plans, cruise ships are a big part of the area’s economy.

Much of Seattle’s tourism is seasonal. Visitor numbers change throughout the year, especially surrounding the busy Alaskan cruise season.

This contract changes that dynamic for Seattle by locking in a mandatory floor for downtown foot traffic.

To put the 325,000-passenger guarantee into perspective, it represents enough people to fill Seattle’s Lumen Field nearly five times over the course of the cruise season.

Because the contract specifically counts “revenue passengers,” this number only includes paying guests. The thousands of crew members who also step off the ships to buy food, use local transport, and shop downtown will add to that total.

For waterfront restaurants, local hotels, and transportation providers, this guarantee gives a little more financial security.

Operations at Pier 66

The agreement keeps NCLH’s homeport presence at the Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66, located directly on the downtown waterfront. For the 2026 season, NCLH will homeport four vessels here:

  • Norwegian Bliss
  • Norwegian Encore
  • Norwegian Joy
  • Oceania Riviera

There are more than 70 ship calls scheduled for NCLH brands this season.

“The Port of Seattle’s cruise sector is a particularly bright spot in our business lines, with growing passenger numbers, revenues, and benefit for the community,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Sam Cho. “Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has been an outstanding partner to the Port of Seattle for more than a quarter of a century, and I am pleased to support this new agreement today.”

Environmental Goals

But money isn’t the only important part of this agreement that matters. NCLH’s long-term future at Pier 66 depends on whether the cruise line meets strict environmental performance targets as well.

The extension options from 2036 to 2045 are not automatic and require sustainability progress.

Under the amended terms, NCLH will work with the Port on a demonstration project to test sustainable, non-fossil maritime fuels. The cruise line has also agreed to a goal of 100% zero-emission shoreside operations by 2030.

So, while Norwegian tries to maintain steady and consistent cruise passenger traffic in Seattle, the company will also be pairing that with sustainability projects to make sure the commitment with the port will last for many more years to come.

Norwegian Cruise Line Opens Advance Bookings For Great Tides Waterpark Ahead Of 2026 Launch

Norwegian Cruise Line has officially opened advance sales for its highly anticipated Great Tides Waterpark at Great Stirrup Cay, giving future guests the first opportunity to secure day passes and premium rentals ahead of the attraction’s debut later this year.

NCL Great Stirrup Cay Upgrades

From 28th May 2026, guests booked on sailings visiting the Bahamian private island from 4th September onwards can begin purchasing admission passes for the nearly six-acre waterpark. Cabana rentals and other exclusive spaces are also now available to reserve, with each rental including waterpark access.

The new attraction is set to officially welcome its first guests on Friday, 4th September 2026, when Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Norwegian Luna, becomes the first vessel to call at the transformed private destination.

“Great Stirrup Cay continues to evolve as the premier private island destination in the Bahamas, and we’re excited to officially open Great Tides Waterpark on Sept. 4, 2026,

“With the best activities for families and for every type of traveler – from high-energy slides to laid-back lagoon experiences – guests can purchase their day passes ahead and lock in an unforgettable day on the most spectacular private island in the Caribbean beginning tomorrow.”

Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Pricing for both waterpark admission and private rentals has not been fixed across all sailings. Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed rates will vary depending on factors such as sailing dates, seasonal demand, holidays and the number of ships visiting Great Stirrup Cay on a particular day.

Luxury Cabanas And New Attractions Revealed

While Norwegian Cruise Line has yet to release full specifications for the private cabanas, newly shared renderings offer a glimpse at the upscale experience guests can expect.

The cabanas will accommodate up to six guests and feature shaded lounge seating, ceiling fans and dedicated relaxation areas. Some are positioned near the park’s headline waterslides, while others overlook the lazy river for easier access to quieter attractions.

Tidal Tower Great Stirrup Cay

The cruise line first announced Great Tides Waterpark in July 2025, promising one of the largest expansions ever made to Great Stirrup Cay. Since then, more attractions and details have been confirmed.

At the centre of the development is the 170-foot Tidal Tower, which serves as the launch point for several major slides. Among the most intense attractions are the Breakwater Blasters water coasters and the Whitewater Dash racing body slides.

Guests looking for competitive thrills can try the Rapid Mat Racers dual mat slides, while Tropic Storm and Tropic Spiral deliver twisting enclosed slide experiences.

One of the waterpark’s standout features will be Cliffside Cove, described by the cruise line as an industry-first attraction featuring 10-foot and 15-foot cliff jumps.

Families travelling together will also find attractions designed for group participation, including The Great Slide, which Norwegian Cruise Line says is the Caribbean’s only four-person body slide.

Great Stirrup Cay Heroes

For younger visitors, Splash Cay will offer more than 9,000 square feet of interactive play space complete with fountains, mini slides, sprays and a giant tipping bucket.

Meanwhile, guests seeking a more relaxed experience can float along the Wandering River, an elevated lazy river stretching more than 800 feet. The attraction will include a multi-sensory grotto alongside sections featuring stronger currents and more active water features.

Great Stirrup Cay Expansion Continues

The waterpark is only one part of a much wider redevelopment project taking place at Great Stirrup Cay.

Visitors arriving later this year will also find the new Great Life Lagoon, expanded beaches, swim-up bars, fresh dining venues including three new food trucks, and the adults-only Vibe Shore Club.

Norwegian Cruise Line has also upgraded the island’s transportation infrastructure with an expanded tram system designed to improve access across the destination.

Norwegian Luna will lead the opening celebrations during her 29th August 2026 sailing from Miami. The seven-night Caribbean itinerary will include calls to Puerto Plata, St. Thomas and Tortola before ending with the inaugural visit to Great Stirrup Cay after the waterpark officially opens.

Following the debut, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Prima are expected to make regular visits throughout September, with Norwegian Aqua, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Jewel joining the schedule in October.

As the Caribbean winter season ramps up later in the year, even more Norwegian Cruise Line ships are expected to include Great Stirrup Cay on their itineraries, bringing thousands of guests each week to experience the cruise line’s largest private island enhancement to date.

Silver Whisper Rescues Injured Sailor From Dismasted Boat In Rough Pacific Seas

Silversea Cruises’ Silver Whisper has rescued an injured sailor from a badly damaged sailboat after diverting for around seven hours in the Pacific Ocean.

The rescue took place on Tuesday, 26th May 2026, as the 28,258-gross-ton luxury ship was nearing the end of a 24-night voyage from Papeete, Tahiti, to Vancouver, Canada.

The 392-guest ship, operated by Royal Caribbean Group-owned Silversea, was contacted after the sailor’s vessel, April Alice, became disabled too far from both Hawaii and the US mainland for an air rescue to be attempted.

Under SOLAS rules, ship masters are required to assist people in distress at sea where it is safe and reasonable to do so.

Captain Michele Macarone Palmieri altered course, with Silver Whisper eventually reaching the stricken craft after approximately seven hours.

Passenger accounts said the sailboat had lost power and communications in rough conditions, while photos showed the vessel without its mast. The lone sailor had suffered an injury to his left shoulder.

“Two hours ago our ship, the Silver Whisper, rescued a man (in green hat), whose vessel lost all power & communications in high winds & rough seas. We were the closest ship to him – it took 7 hours to reach him, with no exact coordinates,”

“Happy to report he was found, is alive – with a broken shoulder, but doing well. Big Congrats to the Silver Whisper Captain & Crew,”

Silver Whisper guest on Facebook

Rough Seas Complicated The Rescue

Passengers praised the bridge team and crew for completing the operation in challenging sea conditions.

“Funny thing was that the hour we spent rescuing the guy was about the smoothest period we’ve had on this ship since we left Kona (Hawaii) five days ago,” guest Jeff Hall told the Vancouver Sun.

Hall said the ship had to move alongside the sailboat twice after the first line attached to the smaller vessel broke.

“I have experienced many wonderful moments on Silversea but was moved to tears today as I watched our fantastic Captain Michele Macarone Palmieri and the crew of the Silver Whisper perform a miraculous rescue at sea requested by the Coast Guard…words cannot describe how brave these men and women were,” another passenger said.

Guests were reportedly asked to avoid outer decks and return to their suites while the rescue was underway because of the conditions, though many still watched as the crew brought the sailor safely aboard.

Arrival Into Vancouver Still Expected On Schedule

Despite the diversion, Silver Whisper was still expected to arrive in Vancouver on the morning of 28th May 2026. The ship’s itinerary had already completed its port calls before the rescue took place.

Following the voyage, Silver Whisper is due to begin its Alaska season from Vancouver, with Silversea listing the ship at 392 guests, 302 crew, and 28,258 tons.

Glass Panel Shatters Inside Royal Caribbean’s Star Of The Seas AquaDome

Passengers sailing aboard Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas were met with an unusual sight this week after one of the glass panels inside the ship’s AquaDome suddenly shattered during a Caribbean voyage.

The damaged section was spotted by guests onboard the 248,663-gross-ton vessel on 26th May 2026, with photos of the shattered panel quickly circulating on social media. The affected glass remained in place within its frame and there have been no reports of injuries or immediate danger to passengers.

Star of the Seas only entered service in August 2025, making the incident particularly notable given the ship is less than a year old. The vessel is the second ship in Royal Caribbean’s Icon-class series and currently sails 7-night Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral.

The AquaDome, located on the forward top deck, is one of the ship’s signature spaces. By day, it serves as a relaxing neighbourhood with ocean views, while at night it transforms into a major entertainment venue featuring performances, lighting effects, and immersive shows beneath its towering glass structure.

Several factors can potentially lead to spontaneous glass breakage at sea, including manufacturing defects, rapid temperature changes, strong weather conditions, bird strikes, or stress caused by movement and vibrations during sailing.

Although the Caribbean experiences consistently hot temperatures during late spring and summer, experts generally point to sudden temperature fluctuations rather than prolonged heat exposure as a more likely cause of tempered glass failure.

Crew members are expected to secure the surrounding area until the damaged panel can be replaced.

Not The First Glass Incident On Star Of The Seas

This is not the first time Star of the Seas has experienced issues involving shattered glass.

Ahead of the ship’s maiden voyage in August 2025, a glass safety barrier panel on Deck 15 unexpectedly shattered during a preview sailing. The affected section, which formed part of the overboard protection barrier, was quickly blocked off using temporary barriers and coverings while repairs were carried out.

No injuries were reported during that incident either, though guests nearby were reportedly startled by the sudden breakage.

The ship also entered service with one of its headline attractions temporarily unavailable. The Frightening Bolt waterslide inside the Category 6 Waterpark remained closed as a precaution following a separate accident aboard sister ship Icon of the Seas.

Just days before Star of the Seas officially debuted, an acrylic panel on Icon of the Seas’ version of the slide shattered while a guest was riding it. Both attractions are nearly identical, prompting Royal Caribbean to suspend operation of the slides while inspections and safety checks were completed.

Recent String Of Glass Incidents Across Royal Caribbean Fleet

What’s even stranger is that Royal Caribbean has experienced several glass-related incidents across multiple ships, all within the past year.

In September 2025, a glass panel shattered inside the Windjammer Marketplace aboard Utopia of the Seas. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Symphony of the Seas also dealt with three separate glass incidents during 2025, affecting the Coastal Kitchen restaurant, the Solarium, and an area near the sports deck zip line.

One of the more concerning moments occurred inside Coastal Kitchen, where crew members reportedly acted quickly to move guests away from the area before glass fell nearby.

Symphony of the Seas broken glass

While glass breakage incidents remain relatively uncommon in the cruise industry overall, Royal Caribbean has seen a noticeable cluster of similar events involving windows, barriers, and attraction panels over the past year.

The cruise line has consistently stated that safety remains its highest priority, with affected areas secured immediately and repairs carried out following each incident.

Royal Caribbean Ship Drops Jamaica Call After Propulsion Issue

Royal Caribbean has removed a scheduled port call in Jamaica from Allure of the Seas’ current Caribbean cruise after the ship developed a propulsion issue while already sailing towards the destination.

Allure of the Seas

The 225,282-gross-ton ship departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Sunday, 24th May, for a six-night Western Caribbean itinerary. The voyage was due to visit Perfect Day at CocoCay, Falmouth in Jamaica, and Nassau in the Bahamas.

However, after leaving CocoCay and spending a day at sea, guests were told over the ship’s public address system that the planned call in Falmouth would no longer take place.

Itinerary Changed While At Sea

Royal Caribbean later confirmed the change in a letter to passengers, explaining that the ship was sailing at a reduced speed because of a technical problem affecting one of its propulsion systems.

“We are currently experiencing a technical issue with one of our propulsion systems. While our team works to resolve this, we’ll be sailing at a reduced speed and will need to make a slight adjustment to our itinerary.”

Instead of continuing to Jamaica, Allure of the Seas turned back towards the Bahamas, with guests now set to visit Nassau two days earlier than planned.

Falmouth Cruise Port

Some passengers had already noticed the slower speed before the official update. One guest wrote on Reddit: “It feels like we’re barely moving!” and added: “I’d love some reassurance that we’re going to make it back!”

Despite the change, Royal Caribbean has not altered the overall end date of the cruise. Allure of the Seas is still scheduled to return to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, 30th May 2026.

Guests To Receive Onboard Credit

Guests who had booked Royal Caribbean shore excursions for Falmouth will have those tours automatically cancelled and refunded as onboard credit. Any unused credit will be refunded to the card on file within 14 days of disembarkation.

Royal Caribbean is also offering additional compensation. Guests in inside and oceanview cabins will receive $100 in onboard credit, while those in oceanview balcony or neighbourhood balcony staterooms will receive $150. Suite guests will receive $200, with an extra $50 for each third and fourth guest in a cabin.

The ship will now spend Wednesday in Nassau, followed by the originally planned sea day, before returning to Nassau again on Friday, 29th May.

“You’ll have a full day on Wednesday to explore the beauty and charm of Nassau,” Royal Caribbean wrote.

“We’ll then enjoy our relaxing Sea Day as planned before returning to Nassau again on Friday.”

No change has been announced for the ship’s next sailing, an eight-night Eastern Caribbean cruise due to depart Fort Lauderdale later on 30th May 2026.

Latest Change For Allure Of The Seas

The propulsion-related adjustment follows several future itinerary changes for Allure of the Seas. Two separate 2027 sailings have recently been shortened by one day, while another March 2027 cruise was cancelled altogether because of a full-ship charter.
