Fire Erupts On Cruise Ship, Crew Member Dies After Emergency Evacuation

A tragic early-morning fire aboard the cruise ship World Legacy has left one crew member dead and prompted a full passenger evacuation as the vessel approached Singapore on Friday.

According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the blaze broke out around 4:00 a.m. local time in a lounge area on Deck 9. Emergency teams — including marine firefighters from the Singapore Civil Defence Force — responded quickly and extinguished the fire.

Passengers Rushed to Muster Stations

Guests onboard were awakened by alarms and crew instructions as smoke spread through parts of the ship. Standard emergency procedures were immediately activated, with passengers directed to muster stations and instructed to wear life jackets.

As a precaution, authorities carried out a phased evacuation once the situation was stabilized. Passengers were transferred ashore to HarbourFront Ferry Terminal, where paramedics conducted health checks and treated those affected by smoke exposure or stress.

The vessel was carrying 271 passengers and 388 crew members at the time of the incident. Four passengers were transported to the hospital for further evaluation. No additional serious injuries among passengers or crew were reported.

Crew Member Loses Life

One Indonesian crew member died as a result of the fire. Officials have not released details about the crew member’s position on board. The Indonesian Embassy in Singapore has been notified.

Ship Moved for Inspection

Following the incident, World Legacy was moved to Raffles Reserved Anchorage within the Port of Singapore for further assessment and investigation. A safety zone was established around the vessel during emergency operations.

A skeleton crew remains onboard to maintain essential systems and assist with inspections, while other crew members are being disembarked.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Cruise Addicts will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Simple Digital Habits For A Clearer Mind

We’ve all experienced the “auto-pilot” problem: checking the time only to end up doomscrolling for thirty minutes, leaving us feeling drained and anxious. Because devices are designed for constant engagement, we reactively reach for them whenever we feel bored or stressed.

Today, we recognize that mental health is built on these tiny digital interactions. You don’t need a drastic “digital detox” to recover. Instead, the secret lies in small, intentional steps. By adjusting just one or two habits, you can clear mental fog and stop technology from depleting your energy. You aren’t a victim of your phone; you simply need better rituals to stay in control of your mind.

Cleaning Up Your Digital Home

Think of your phone’s home screen like your physical living room. If it is cluttered with junk and constant noise, you won’t be able to relax. The first step to reclaiming your peace is “muting the noise.”

Every time your phone buzzes with a non-important notification—like a social media “like” or a shopping alert—your brain experiences a tiny spike of cortisol, the stress hormone. By turning off all notifications except those from actual human beings, you stop these constant “panic” spikes and reclaim your attention.

Next, try organizing your digital space to boost your happiness. Move your most helpful tools—like music, reading, or apps for emotional regulation—to your front screen. These are the apps that help you feel grounded and calm.

Meanwhile, hide your most distracting apps in folders on the second or third page. This adds a “friction” layer that prevents you from tapping them out of habit.

Finally, try to do only one thing at a time. If you are watching a video, just watch the video. If you are texting, just text. Focusing on a single task makes your brain feel much calmer than jumping between five different tabs.

Checking Your Phone with Purpose

Most screen time is “passive,” meaning we mindlessly consume information. To break this cycle, try the “three-second pause.” Before tapping an app, ask: “Why am I opening this?” If the answer is boredom or stress, take a deep breath instead. This tiny moment shifts you from a reactive state to an intentional one, reclaiming your time.

Curating your digital environment is equally vital; your feed is a diet for your mind. Avoid “mental junk food” by unfollowing accounts that trigger jealousy or anger. Instead, seek content that inspires or educates.

Remember, active engagement—like sending a kind message or leaving a thoughtful comment—creates real connection. This is far more rewarding for your brain than scrolling through photos in silence.

Saving Your Sleep and Your Mornings

The two most important times for your mental health are the hour before you sleep and the hour after you wake up. Unfortunately, these are usually the times we are most addicted to our screens.

The “bedtime rule” is the most effective digital habit you can adopt: put your phone away at least 60 minutes before you go to sleep. The blue light from the screen tricks your brain into thinking it is daytime, which ruins your sleep quality and leaves you feeling grumpy the next morning.

Similarly, try to create a “morning buffer.” Most of us reach for our phones before we even open our eyes, immediately filling our heads with other people’s problems and to-do lists. Instead, try starting your day with something analog, like a stretch, a cup of coffee, or just looking out the window for five minutes.

You can also create “phone-free zones” in your house. Making the dining table or the bedroom a screen-free zone helps you reconnect with yourself and the people you live with, creating a physical boundary for your peace of mind.

Using Your Tech to Grow

Technology isn’t just a source of stress; it can also be a powerful tool for self-discovery. You can use your phone to help you reflect on your life. Try “micro-journaling” by using your notes app to write down just one good thing that happened each day. Over time, this trains your brain to look for the positive. You can also set a simple timer once or twice a day for a “one-minute reset.” When the timer goes off, stop whatever you are doing and take five deep breaths. This simple act resets your nervous system and lowers your overall anxiety.

Finally, use your “Screen Time” reports as a mirror. Don’t look at them to judge yourself, but to see if you are actually spending your time on things you love. If you see that you spent three hours on an app that makes you feel tired, you can use that information to make a better choice tomorrow. When you treat your phone as a tool for growth rather than a distraction, you start to see it as a partner in your wellness journey.

To Sum Up

At the end of the day, your phone is a tool, and you are the architect of your digital life. It should work for you, not the other way around. By adopting these simple habits—cleaning up your home screen, pausing before you click, and protecting your sleep—you create a protective barrier around your mental health.

The goal isn’t to be perfect or to never scroll again. The goal is to be aware. When you change your small digital habits, you change the entire “vibe” of your day. You will find that you have more energy, more focus, and more time for the real-world experiences that truly make you happy. You are the boss of your tech, and today is a great day to start acting like it.

Plans for New Cruise Port Near Tampa Hit with Major Setback

Just last month Cruise Fever reported that a new push was underway to bring a new cruise port to the Tampa Bay area that would take away the need to go under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

This new proposal would also allow larger ships that can’t fit under the bridge to be able to access the Tampa area and its 400,000 residents.

But recent developments in the Florida Senate could be halting those plans before they ever see the light of day.

In January 2026, Cruise terminal operator SSA Marine announced plans for a new terminal on the Gulf side of the Skyway Bridge.  This would allow larger ships, which can’t currently access the Tampa Bay port, to sail in and out of the Florida cruise port.

While some welcomed the idea of being able to sail mega ships out of the Tampa Bay area, not everyone was on board.   And now there is a legislative snag that could stop the project in its tracks.

Florida lawmakers are now moving to make sure the project never breaks ground.

A Unanimous Vote

According to news reports, on Wednesday, the Florida Senate passed SB 302 with a unanimous 38-0 vote.

While the bill is technically about coastal issues unrelated to the cruise industry, an important amendment added by State Senator Jim Boyd has basically turned it into a no-go for the new cruise port project.

The amendment gives new protections to the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve, which is the environmentally sensitive area where SSA Marine hoped to build its deep-water terminal.

“No further dredging or filling of the submerged lands 71 of the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve shall be approved or 72 tolerated by the board,” the bill states, giving a few small exceptions afterward.

The “Dredging” Problem

For the new port to even have a chance, developers would need to dig a 4.5-mile long channel to depths of about 60 feet to accommodate the newest cruise ships.   At least, these were the numbers given by some environmental experts that have spoken at recent community rallies.

Senator Boyd’s amendment makes that digging almost impossible to permit.

“In an effort to protect the pristine coastal area of East Tampa Bay, which has small keys, little bays, and mangroves, this amendment restricts the dredging or filling of submerged lands within the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve,” Boyd stated during the session.

The Debate Goes On

The legislative vote comes after weeks of discussion in Manatee County. Some opposition movements have grown, even while some local residents have pushed for the project to continue.

A Change.org petition to “Stop the Skyway Cruise Port” has received over 19,000 signatures.

Some public meetings have become so heated that county officials reported staffers and their families have faced harassment.  This has led to some lawmakers calling for a “pause” on all port-related arguments.

What Now?

The project isn’t officially dead yet, but it’s not looking good so far. The bill now moves to the Florida House, where another bill (HB 1035) awaits.

If the House bill is anything like the Senate’s and the Governor signs it, the law would take effect on July 1, 2026.

For the developers at SSA Marine, who recently bought Rattlesnake Key for $18 million as a “buffer zone,” the project is on shaky ground.

Cruise Line Discontinuing Submarine Program

Seabourn, an ultra-luxury cruise line from Carnival Corporation, has announced that they will be ending their submarine program in early March 2026.

Seabourn venture

The cruise line sent out an email saying that they are discontinuing the submarine program after a comprehensive review of guest engagement, operational considerations, and evolving regulatory requirements.

The custom built submarines were a part of their expedition offering but guest participation was lower than expected. Since the program requires a high level of specialized expertise to maintain the subs, the cruise line decided it was best to end the program.

Also, evolving regulatory requirements in certain regions have increasingly limited where and how submarine operations can take place.

Guests traveling on a Seabourn Expedition ship will continue to enjoy a rich, immersive, and expedition experience that includes:

  • Zodiac cruising and landings
  • Guided shore lands and excursions
  • Wildlife viewing from both ships and shore
  • Cultural encounters and community visits
  • Optional kayak excursions and snorkeling experiences
  • Daily expert enrichment
  • Image Master program

Seabourn’s submarine program will conclude at the end of the current Antarctic season in early March 2026.

Meet the Orient Express Super Yacht

When you think of the Orient Express, you probably think of luxury train cars, white-glove service, and the golden age of European travel.

But now, the travel company known for being the setting of Agatha Christie novels, is getting into the yacht business. In just four months, the Orient Express Corinthian will officially debut as the world’s largest sailing yacht.

Orient Express Corinthian

High-Tech Sails and LNG Fuel

This isn’t your average yacht or sailing vessel.  It’s really a combination of both.

The Corinthian blends old-school style with some really impressive and new tech. It features a revolutionary “SolidSail” system with three massive, rigid sails.

The 328 ft. masts are roughly the height of a 30-story building, and each sail provides about 16,000 sq. ft. of surface area.

Unlike traditional fabric sails that flutter in the wind, these are made of foldable composite panels. When the ship is docked or the wind is too high, the sails actually fold up like an accordion to stay out of the way.

When they are deployed, they can power the ship entirely by wind if conditions are right.

When the wind isn’t enough, the yacht switches to a hybrid engine running on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This combo makes it one of the cleanest luxury vessels on the water today.

Accommodations

At 721 feet long, this sailing yacht is huge by sailboat standards, but it’s designed to feel private. It has only 54 suites and accommodates just 110 guests, so you won’t be fighting for a spot by the pool.

The ship has seven decks, and the top deck is home to the best suites. There are six suites on Deck 7, led by the aft-facing Agatha Christie suite. This suite gives you 2,422 square feet inside and another 1,938 square feet on the terrace. It comes with two bedrooms, a marble bath, a private fitness room and a terrace with its own jacuzzi.

The Zephyr penthouse suite, also on Deck 7, is even bigger. It offers 2,486 square feet of interior space and a 1,206-square-foot terrace.

dining venues on Orient Express Corinthian

World-Class Dining

The Orient Express Corinthian has five restaurants and eight bars, with menus designed by three-Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno.  Here are a few restaurants and bars on board.

  • La Table de l’Orient Express: The main fine-dining spot.
  • L’Écrin: A seafood place with international cuisine.
  • Le Yacht Club: A pub-inspired bar and restaurant for watching sport events, playing darts, or just grabbing a crab sandwich.
  • La Terrasse: An Art Deco and contemporary designed dining venue.
  • Le Bar De La Bibliotheque: A quiet spot to read a book and grab an artisanal coffee or drink.
  • Marina Bar: Located right at the water’s edge for the best views.

Check out this video preview by Popular Cruising to see what it will be like to be on board:

Amenities and Leisure

Pool and Marina on Orient Express Corinthian
The Marina on the right, allowing passengers to enjoy water sports from the back of the vessel. The 54-foot lap lane pool (on left) under the sailboat’s mast.

The ship is built to be a “floating sanctuary,” offering services you usually only find in a high-end city neighborhood. For example, there’s a barber shop, a hair salon, and even an on-board tailor if you need a suit adjusted.

The Guerlain Spa is the heart of the ship’s relaxation area. It features a tepidarium (a warm lounging room), a sauna, and a hammam.

If you want to stay active and love to swim, there is a 54-foot lap lane pool located right on the deck, plus a gym and yoga studio with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Other cool spots include:

  • The Library: A quiet room with 1,500 books and its own bar.
  • Entertainment: An Amphitheater Cabaret, a 24-seat private Cinema, and even a Recording Studio.

Itineraries

The Orient Express Corinthian will offer a wide variety of durations on its sailings, with trips lasting anywhere from 3 to 14 nights.

  • The Mediterranean: The first season starts in June 2026. Routes include the French Riviera (Cannes, Monaco, Saint-Tropez), the Adriatic Coast (Venice, Dubrovnik), and Italian stops like Capri.
  • The Caribbean: In the winter, the yacht heads to the West Indies. You can choose from the Lesser Antilles or stops in Saint Barts and Anguilla.
  • Special Voyages: The yacht also does a 14-night Transatlantic crossing from Lisbon to Barbados and a specific route from Miami to Marigot.
