Marella Cruises vs MSC Cruises

If you’ve been browsing cruise deals and dreaming of sailing somewhere sunny without spending a fortune, you’ve almost certainly come across Marella Cruises and MSC Cruises.

They’re both popular in the Med and the Caribbean and both often have very tempting prices. But below the surface, they offer two very different styles of holiday.

Marella vs MSC

Marella is very much an all-inclusive, British-style package where you book once and most things are covered. MSC, meanwhile, is a global cruise brand with big, modern ships and low cruise-only fares, but more to think about when it comes to add-ons.

Here’s a detailed, side-by-side look at what separates the two – from what’s included to the ships, destinations, cabins, dining, entertainment and price – so you can work out which cruise line fits the way you like to travel.

The Biggest Difference – All Inclusive vs Pay-As-You-Go

Marella’s All-Inclusive Approach

Marella keeps things wonderfully simple. Every cruise is all-inclusive as standard, and that includes your flights, airport transfers, tips, meals in the included restaurants and a generous selection of alcoholic and soft drinks.

The drinks list isn’t a slim pickings sort of menu either. You’ll find draught lager and cider, bottled beers, house wines, a good choice of spirits and liqueurs… plenty to keep you happy!

Enjoying a drink on Marella

Because so much is bundled into the fare, you never really have to second-guess what’s included. Whether you’re ordering a cappuccino mid-afternoon or a gin and tonic before dinner, it’s all part of the package.

For those who want more branded spirits or a broader choice of wine and cocktails, the Premium All Inclusive upgrade is a modest daily supplement.

Marella’s biggest appeal is the ease of budgeting. Once you’ve paid your holiday balance, there’s very little left to think about until you get home.

MSC’s Pick-and-Mix Extras

MSC takes a more modular approach. The standard cruise fare includes your cabin, meals in the main dining room and buffet, and most entertainment, but drinks outside the buffet usually come at an extra cost unless you buy a package.

This is where the price can creep up. The Easy drinks package covers basic beers, wines and simple spirits, while Premium opens up a much wider choice of cocktails, branded spirits, premium coffees and even energy drinks. Prices vary by sailing, but they’re a significant addition to the holiday cost.

Cruise Mummy raises a glass of amber-colored beverage in the Main Dining Room on an MSC cruise ship, with elegant décor and attentive staff in the background, capturing a moment of joy and fine dining on a luxury voyage.

It’s a little less clear on the gratuities front because it depends where you’re sailing from – for European cruises they’re included, but sailing the Caribbean from a US port you’ll need to pay them extra. Flights are also not automatically included unless you book a package, so that may be something you arrange yourself.

MSC can still work out excellent value, especially if you’re happy with basic drinks or don’t drink very much at all. But it does require a little more maths and decision-making upfront.

How to Choose

If you love the idea of paying once and forgetting about it, Marella’s all-inclusive model is unbeatable.

But if you prefer to build your holiday your own way – especially if you’re a light drinker or enjoy shopping for flights separately – MSC may suit you just as well.

Ships

One of the biggest differences between Marella Cruises and MSC Cruises is within their fleet of ships.

Marella Cruises Ships

Marella’s five ships are all mid-sized by modern standards. They carry roughly 1,800–2,000 guests, which creates a lovely balance between having plenty to do and still feeling intimate enough that you can learn the layout quickly and bump into familiar faces.

The Marella Discovery cruise ship, adorned with festive flags, sails through the ocean at sunset, its decks bustling with passengers enjoying the journey.

The ships began life with other lines (including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity), so they follow a traditional cruise ship design: a welcoming atrium, a theatre, a main dining room, a lively buffet, a couple of speciality restaurants and a main pool deck with quieter corners.

The décor has been updated fleetwide with a contemporary, laid-back feel aimed squarely at UK holidaymakers. You’ll find a mix of bars and lounges, some great casual dining spots, and often a separate adult area or quieter pool. They’re easy to navigate and never feel overwhelmingly large.

MSC Cruises Ships

MSC has one of the most varied fleets in the world, ranging from older, leaner ships to modern floating resorts carrying more than 6,000 guests.

The latest ships – including MSC World Europa, MSC Seashore and MSC World America – are vast, high-tech and packed with features. Expect long indoor promenades with LED ceilings, multi-deck atriums, sprawling pool decks, big water slides, entertainment zones, large spas and a huge choice of restaurants and bars.

MSC World Europa Venom Drop Slide

Even the mid-sized ships in the Meraviglia and Seaside classes feel like modern resorts rather than traditional cruise ships. They’re full of energy and offer more facilities than many land-based hotels.

At the other end of the spectrum, the older Lirica and Musica class ships are quieter and simpler. They feel closer to Marella in scale, though still with MSC’s distinctly European styling.

How to Choose

If you want something friendly and easy to get around, Marella’s mid-sized ships hit the sweet spot.

For those who like their ships to have all the bells and whistles – those who love the idea of a floating city with endless entertainment and places to explore – MSC’s newer ships will feel like an adventure in themselves.

Destinations

One of the cruise lines is a little more limited with its choice of destinations, but it has an ethos that may really appeal to you…

Marella Cruises Destinations

Marella focuses on fly-cruises aimed at UK travellers wanting a straightforward sunshine escape. Ships spend the year in the Mediterranean, Canary Islands and Caribbean, and the itineraries tend to be port-heavy with very few sea days – by flying you into the heart of each region, you get more time to explore ashore.

Cruise Mummy Marella Ship

With flights from up to 16 UK airports available, it’s an extremely convenient way to reach warmer weather without a long transit.

A big bonus is Marella’s Cruise & Stay programme, where you can add a TUI hotel stay before or after your sailing.

Options include Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Majorca, Corfu and more – ideal if you want to extend your holiday without arranging everything separately.

MSC Cruises Destinations

MSC is truly global, with ships sailing everywhere from the Med and Northern Europe to the Middle East, South America, South Africa and the Caribbean. They also offer repositioning voyages and the occasional Asian itinerary.

Doha Qatar

Many Mediterranean routes operate with rolling embarkation, meaning guests join and leave the cruise at different ports along a longer route. It’s flexible and efficient, though the atmosphere can change a little from day to day.

Flights aren’t automatically included for UK travellers, so you’ll often need to book them separately or choose an MSC fly-cruise package.

MSC does also sail from the UK, so if you want to avoid flying altogether then it will be the better option.

How to Choose

If you want the simplest route to the sun directly from your nearest UK airport, Marella keeps everything nicely streamlined.

However, if you’d like more unusual or longer itineraries – or enjoy exploring beyond Europe and the Caribbean – MSC offers far more variety. And it’s the better of the two for anyone who just doesn’t want to fly, with a selection of cruises from Southampton available.

Staterooms and Suites

The kind of cabin you book for a cruise can really make the difference. Marella keeps things simple and easy-to-understand, but MSC may sway those with a bigger budget…

Marella Cabins

Marella’s cabins feel homely and practical rather than flashy. They come in the familiar categories, from insides to suites, and many have sofa beds or fold-down beds ideal for families. Their larger family cabins can sleep up to seven guests, depending on the ship.

Marella Explorer bunk beds

Suites add some thoughtful perks under the “Suite Service” umbrella, including one breakfast in bed per week, a coffee machine, upgraded toiletries, bathrobes, slippers and a pillow menu.

It feels like a comfortable upgrade without separating you from the overall ship experience. It’s not the long list of perks that some cruise lines might offer for suites, but those touches are nice to have.

MSC Cabins and the Yacht Club

MSC’s cabins vary more noticeably depending on the ship and the fare you choose.

On the newer vessels, cabins tend to look bright and contemporary with sleek lines, glossy finishes, large wardrobes and modern bathrooms, giving them more of a stylish European-hotel feel compared with Marella’s cosier décor.

MSC Virtuosa Balcony Cabin

Older ships still feel comfortable, but the design is simpler and the bathrooms smaller.

A key difference with MSC is its tiered fare structure. When you book, you’ll choose between Bella, Fantastica or Aurea, and this choice affects not just your perks but also the exact cabin you’ll be allocated.

Bella is the entry-level option and often limits you to less desirable locations. Fantastica gives you more freedom to choose your cabin and offers a few handy perks such as room service breakfast.

Aurea steps things up with welcome extras like priority embarkation, access to private sundecks on some ships and more premium cabin positions.

Read more: MSC Bella Vs Fantastica Vs Aurea: Which To Choose?

And then there’s the MSC Yacht Club, which is in a league of its own and very much a “ship within a ship”.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suite

Yacht Club guests stay in a private enclave with its own lounge, restaurant and sun deck, along with butler service, a dedicated concierge, priority embarkation and disembarkation, and inclusive drinks within the Yacht Club spaces. It creates a quiet, luxurious bubble while still giving you access to the full range of facilities on the larger ship.

MSC also offers a handful of single cabins on selected ships, though some use sofa beds rather than a standard mattress, so it’s worth checking the details.

Families are well catered for too, with interconnecting rooms and larger family cabins that can accommodate up to six guests.

How to Choose

If you mainly want a comfortable, traditional cabin to relax in – with predictable layouts and no surprises – Marella keeps things simple.

If you’re drawn to modern décor, like having more control over cabin type and perks, or you’re tempted by the quiet exclusivity of the Yacht Club, MSC provides more flexibility.

Just make sure to pay attention to the fare type you book with MSC, as it can make a meaningful difference to where your cabin ends up and what little extras you receive.

Dining

For a lot of people, the quality of the food onboard is what really makes or breaks a cruise. And there are plenty of differences between these two cruise lines.

Marella Cruises Dining

Marella’s dining experience leans towards British tastes, although it’s a lot more than just a mix of roasts and grills. Expect a wide range of curries, fish dishes and international favourites (along with good vegetarian options) in the main dining rooms.

Marella Cruises The Dining Club

The buffet feels familiar and comforting, often adding destination-inspired dishes depending on the itinerary. Because drinks are included, dinners feel relaxed and straightforward – you can order what you fancy without doing mental maths.

Speciality dining is available for a small supplement on each ship. Venues such as Surf & Turf, Kora La or The Dining Club offer something a little fancier, but the overall style remains unpretentious and easy-going.

Read more: Marella Cruises Dining Options Explained

MSC Cruises Dining

MSC’s food has a distinctly Mediterranean feel. Expect plenty of pasta and risotto, fresh breads, salads, grilled meats and flavours drawn from around Europe.

The buffet can get busy at peak times, but it usually offers a very wide range of options, including the line’s famously good pizza.

MSC Fantasia restaurant

Where MSC really shines is in its speciality restaurants. Depending on the ship, you’ll find American-style steakhouses, teppanyaki and sushi counters, seafood venues and sometimes branded concepts like Eataly.

These restaurants have a standalone feel and can be a highlight of the cruise, though they all come at an additional cost.

Reviews of the general dining can vary a little, particularly on very cheap or very crowded sailings, but that’s often a reflection of the price point rather than the ambition of the food.

How to Choose

For those who like familiar food but with a good range of new options to try – and the joy of not paying extra for wine or cocktails – Marella will feel spot on. If you want something completely different every day in a wider range of venues, and don’t mind paying extra for the best meals on board, MSC offers more variety overall.

Entertainment and Onboard Activities

The entertainment options and general vibe of Marella’s and MSC’s ships is very different.

Marella Cruises Entertainment

Days onboard Marella ships tend to be laid-back, with a mix of quizzes, craft sessions, fitness classes, dance lessons, spa treatments and the odd bit of poolside fun.

Marella Explorer show

Evenings focus on theatre productions performed by the in-house entertainment team, visiting singers or comedians, and live music in various lounges. Deck parties, silent discos and themed nights pop up now and again depending on the sailing.

The smaller size of the ships makes it easy to move between venues without feeling overwhelmed, and the whole atmosphere tends to be friendly and sociable.

MSC Cruises Entertainment

MSC brings a much livelier, more visual style of entertainment, especially on the newer ships. You’ll find large-scale shows with acrobatics and elaborate staging, late-night pool parties, and amusement zones offering VR rides, F1 simulators and arcades.

A vibrant stage performance on a cruise ship features a group of performers dressed in futuristic costumes under dynamic lighting. The background is illuminated with striking red and orange patterns, creating an energetic atmosphere. The audience is seated, watching the engaging and lively show.

Many ships also have water parks, multi-deck slides and big open-air spaces for parties and family fun.

Because MSC attracts guests from all over the world, the entertainment is designed to be understood without a lot of spoken language – lots of music, showmanship and spectacle rather than dialogue-heavy comedy.

How to Choose

People who prefer a more traditional style of cruise ship entertainment with a warm, cosy feel will likely find that Marella has everything they need.

But for those who need something a little more contemporary, with that late-night energy and resort-style fun, MSC’s bigger ships deliver plenty of “wow”.

Kids’ Facilities

Both cruise lines are welcoming to families, although Marella Cruises does have some ships that are for adults only. Here’s how they compare.

Marella Cruises for Families

Marella’s family offering feels very much like an extension of a TUI family holiday. The kids’ clubs are friendly and familiar, with games, crafts, treasure hunts, movie nights and character visits from the M Crew mascots.

My kids are 8 and 11 and honestly, they didn’t love the kids’ club. That’s because kids of all different ages are together, and the activities were more geared towards the younger ones. After a couple of sessions they didn’t go back and instead spent their time playing football on the sports courts, playing in thr Xbox room or swimming.

Marella hideout kids club

Under-3s have their own stay-and-play sessions, and teens get a separate hangout space where they can socialise, play games or watch films.

Because the ships aren’t huge, it’s easy for families to get around and for kids to join in activities without feeling lost in the crowd.

MSC Cruises for Families

MSC offers a much more branded, high-energy experience thanks to its partnerships with LEGO and Chicco.

Two children pose happily with certificates in front of a large LEGO sailor statue at an MSC Cruise Kids' Club. The boy on the left holds colorful streamers and a "Congratulations" certificate, while the girl on the right, wearing a Minnie Mouse hoodie and a face mask, holds a similar certificate and streamers. The background features bright colors and playful decorations, enhancing the fun atmosphere.

The kids’ clubs are split into tight age groups and offer themed play areas, building challenges, family game shows, parades and plenty of late-night fun for teens. On the newest ships, features like The Harbour outdoor family area and expanded splash zones add even more excitement.

The international atmosphere can be a plus or a minus depending on your children. Some absolutely love the mix of languages and the buzz; others prefer something more familiar.

How to Choose

If you want a simple, comforting holiday that feels very familiar to British families, Marella is the safer bet. If your kids thrive in a busy, high-energy environment – especially if they adore LEGO (and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t?)  – MSC has more to offer.

Price

I’ve said there are several areas where Marella Cruises and MSC differ, but ultimately I think it’s in the pricing – or at least how cruise line packages are put together – where you might see the biggest variance between the two.

Marella Pricing

Marella Cruises’ fares look higher at first glance because you’re seeing something close to the true cost of your holiday.

Marella cocktails

Flights, transfers, drinks, meals, tips and entertainment are all wrapped in. You might add WiFi or a speciality meal, but you could easily spend the entire cruise without taking your wallet out again.

So while a Marella Cruise might look a little higher than you want to spend, that’s only if you haven’t actually thought about everything included. Value-wise, they’re excellent.

MSC Pricing

MSC often advertises incredibly low fares, especially in Europe outside school holidays.

But those prices rarely include flights or drinks packages, and WiFi and speciality dining are extra. Once you start adding the things you consider essential, the overall cost can rise quickly.

Me with MSC Euribia

Some of the very cheapest MSC sailings can feel a bit more “budget” onboard – perhaps repeated menus or longer queues at busy times – but that’s understandable given how low the base fare can be.

You can definitely book cheaper MSC cruises than you can Marella, if you pick the right sailings and dates (especially if sailing from the UK and flights aren’t needed). However you might need to compromise on your experience, in terms of quality and the drinks you have, if you want to keep that fare down.

How to Choose

The fairest comparison is to build the trip you actually want on both lines and compare those totals.

For Marella, that’s the cruise fare, WiFi (if needed) and excursions.

For MSC, it’s the cruise, flights, transfers, your chosen drinks package, WiFi and any speciality dining you plan to try.

Once you do that, the price gap often shrinks dramatically – and sometimes Marella comes out the better-value choice.

Final Word

Both cruise lines offer brilliant ways to see the world without spending a fortune, but they cater to different holiday styles.

Marella excels if you want an easy, all-inclusive package with British-style food and entertainment, mid-sized ships and lots of port days.

MSC suits travellers who enjoy big, modern ships, a more international atmosphere, a wider choice of itineraries and the option to splash out on the Yacht Club.

Whichever way you lean, you’ll find a cruise line capable of giving you a fantastic holiday – it’s just a case of matching the experience to your personality.

Storm Disrupts Multiple Cruise Departures From New York And Florida

A powerful winter storm has continued to disrupt cruise operations along the US east coast, with several ships from different lines facing delayed departures and altered itineraries.

Odyssey of the Seas mocked up with snow

According to the National Weather Service, the system has brought blizzard conditions to parts of New York and New Jersey, with between 12 and 24 inches of snow forecast and wind gusts reaching 40 to 70 miles per hour.

The storm has also caused widespread power outages and moderate coastal flooding, directly impacting major cruise homeports in the region. At the same time, a separate weather system in the southern Bahamas has created rough sea conditions, affecting sailings further south.

Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas and Star of the Seas, MSC Cruises’ MSC Meraviglia, and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway have all been caught up in the disruption.

New York Departures Delayed By Blizzard Conditions

Royal Caribbean International confirmed over the weekend that Odyssey of the Seas would not depart from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey on Sunday 22nd February as originally planned. The decision was made the day before embarkation as the so called bomb cyclone intensified across the north east.

The Quantum Ultra Class ship, which can carry up to 5,510 guests, remained in New Jersey while waiting for conditions to improve sufficiently for a safe departure. It was able to depart the following day.

Guests onboard have shared that they’ve been making the most of it, with several balcony snowmen pictures circulating online!

Across the harbour in Brooklyn, MSC Meraviglia has faced similar challenges. The 171,600 gross ton vessel was also due to sail on Sunday 22nd February for a seven night Bahamas cruise to Port Canaveral, MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve and Nassau.

Guests onboard have reported schedule updates via the MSC for Me app indicating that calls to Port Canaveral and Ocean Cay have been moved to later in the voyage. Nassau now appears to have been removed from the itinerary altogether, though MSC Cruises has yet to publish a formal confirmation of the revised schedule.

In contrast, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway did depart Manhattan Cruise Terminal as scheduled on Sunday 22nd February, embarking on her 12 night Caribbean cruise despite challenging conditions.

The 145,655 gross ton ship has been navigating winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour on her southbound route. While there have been no confirmed itinerary changes, the line may still adjust course or speed to avoid the worst of the weather. The current schedule includes calls at Puerto Plata, San Juan, Tortola, St Kitts, St Maarten and St Thomas, before returning to New York on Friday 6th March.

The differing operational decisions between the three ships sailing from New York and New Jersey have prompted confusion among some guests, particularly as two vessels remained alongside while one set sail.

Bahamas Weather Forces CocoCay Cancellation

Further south, Royal Caribbean International’s Star of the Seas has also experienced itinerary changes, though for a different reason.

The ship departed Port Canaveral on Sunday 22nd February for a seven night Eastern Caribbean sailing. However, guests were informed that the call to Perfect Day at CocoCay scheduled for Monday 23rd February would be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions in the Bahamas.

“Due to a weather system expected to bring unfavorable conditions and rough seas to Perfect Day at CocoCay on Monday, February 23, we will be skipping our visit and enjoying a Sea Day instead,” the notification email confirmed.

To compensate for the missed private island visit, Royal Caribbean has extended the ship’s time in St Thomas. Instead of arriving in Charlotte Amalie at 12.30pm on Wednesday 25th February, Star of the Seas arrived at 8am, giving passengers significantly more time ashore.

Weather related disruptions are not uncommon during the winter months, particularly along the US east coast. Cruise lines typically prioritise safety when making decisions about delayed departures and port cancellations, even if it results in last minute changes for guests.

Travellers sailing in affected regions are being advised to monitor official communications closely for the latest updates.

Robert Downey Jr Named Godparent Of Disney Adventure Ahead Of Singapore Debut

Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. has been confirmed as the official godparent of Disney Cruise Line’s newest and largest vessel, Disney Adventure, in a major announcement made on 23rd February 2026.

Robert Downey Jr Disney Adventure

The 208,000 gross ton ship, which has been purpose-built for the Asian market, will become the biggest vessel in the fleet and is scheduled to begin sailings from Singapore next month.

The casting of Downey in the ceremonial role strengthens the ship’s ties to the Marvel franchise, a cornerstone of Disney’s global entertainment portfolio.

Announcing the appointment, Josh D’Amaro, incoming Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, said: “Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure.”

Downey, who won an Academy Award and is widely associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also shared his thoughts on the appointment.

“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest,”

Marvel Connection At Sea

Downey’s appointment is closely aligned with the onboard experiences planned for the 6,700-guest ship. The actor portrayed Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, for 11 years, culminating in blockbuster hits including Avengers: Endgame, which generated more than $2.79 billion at the global box office.

He is also set to return to the franchise in Phase Six with Avengers: Doomsday, although this time he will take on the role of Doctor Doom rather than the hero he previously embodied.

On board Disney Adventure, guests will find the first-ever Marvel Landing, an expansive themed zone featuring three headline attractions. Among them is Ironcycle Test Run, billed as the longest roller coaster at sea and inspired by Iron Man. Two further rides, Pym Quantum Racers and Groot Galaxy Spin, draw on Ant-Man and The Wasp and Guardians of the Galaxy respectively.

Passengers will also have opportunities to meet Marvel characters during their sailing, with appearances expected to include Iron Man.

Singapore Sailings Set To Begin In March

After several months of delay, Disney Adventure is now preparing to enter service. The vessel was officially delivered to Disney in December 2025 and made a brief call at Port Canaveral while repositioning to Asia.

At the time of writing, the ship has arrived in East Asia and is sailing towards Tokyo. Her permanent homeport will be Singapore, where she will operate three and four-night cruises to nowhere.

The maiden voyage is scheduled for 10th March 2026 and will be a three-night sailing. While the official christening date has not yet been revealed, it is widely expected to take place in the days leading up to the inaugural cruise.

Disney Adventure represents a significant expansion for Disney Cruise Line in the Asian market, marking the first time the company has designed and built a ship specifically with the region in mind. With a Hollywood A-lister now confirmed as godparent and a strong Marvel presence on board, the line is clearly aiming to make a high-profile statement as it enters this new chapter.

Holland America vs Celebrity Cruises

Choosing between Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises might feel like picking between two five-star heavyweights – both premium, both polished, and both promising an unforgettable holiday at sea.

But look a little closer and there are some real differences…

Holland America vs Celebrity Cruises

As the flagship premium brands of the Carnival Group and Royal Caribbean Group, Holland America and Celebrity are often mentioned in the same breath.

Many travellers assume they’re more alike than not, yet their styles, atmospheres and onboard priorities contrast in ways that can make one far better suited to you than the other.

I’ve cruised with both Holland America and Celebrity, and each offers something genuinely special. In this guide, I’ll take you through exactly how they compare – from ships and dining to entertainment and destinations – so you can discover which line truly matches your holiday style.

Holland America and Celebrity Cruises both offer a solid mix of modern and mid-sized ships, but neither operates at the enormous scale of the mega-fleet brands like Royal Caribbean, Carnival or MSC Cruises.

Holland America currently sails with 11 ships, ranging from elegant midsize vessels to the newer, slightly larger Pinnacle-class. As it stands, there are no additional ships on order.

Celebrity Cruises has a broader fleet, with 15 ships in service across its Millennium, Solstice and cutting-edge Edge classes. Two more ships are also due to join the fleet in the coming years, further expanding Celebrity’s modern, design-led offering.

Holland America Ships

The MS Rotterdam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, anchored at sea with lifeboats at the ready, showcasing its multi-deck structure and distinctive navy blue hull on an overcast day.

There are four classes of ships in the Holland America fleet:

  • Pinnacle Class – the flagships of the fleet, three ships accommodating 2,650 guests
  • Signature Class – two ships accommodating 2,100 guests
  • Vista Class – four ships accommodating 1,900 guests
  • Rotterdam Class – two ships accommodating 1,400 guests

The newest ship sailing for Holland America is the MS Rotterdam, which launched in 2021 and is part of the newest Pinnacle Class.

In terms of the oldest, that’d be the MS Volendam – launched in 1999 as part of the Rotterdam/R Class.

There are four classes of ships in the Celebrity Cruises fleet:

  • Edge Class – five ships that accommodate 2,900 to 3,200 guests
  • Solstice Class – five ships that accommodate 2,800 to 3,000 guests
  • Millennium Class – four ships that accommodate 2,200 guests
  • Galapagos Class – one expedition ship accommodating 100 guests

How to Choose

When it comes to ship size, Celebrity generally offers the larger and more modern fleet, especially with its innovative Edge-class ships. These vessels are packed with contemporary design touches, impressive entertainment spaces and a wider variety of dining venues.

Holland America’s ships are smaller on average and lean towards a more traditional, elegant style. They feel calmer and less crowded, with a focus on spacious decks, refined interiors and a more relaxed pace of life onboard.

So your choice really depends on the atmosphere you prefer. If you enjoy cutting-edge design, bold architecture and a ship with more venues to explore, Celebrity is likely the better fit.

But if a quieter, classically styled ship with fewer passengers sounds more appealing, Holland America’s fleet will feel much more like home.

Both Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises offer an impressive spread of destinations across the globe. While Europe and the Caribbean are naturally the most popular regions for each line, they both sail far beyond the classic routes if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous.

Celebrity Apex Magic Carpet

Unlike cruise lines with a clear regional focus – such as Royal Caribbean’s Caribbean-heavy programme or MSC’s strong European presence – neither Holland America nor Celebrity really has a single “home” destination. Their fleets are spread widely, and both brands pride themselves on offering varied, globally focused itineraries.

Here’s a breakdown of the itineraries you can expect to find with each line:

Holland America Destinations

Holland America offers an impressive spread of itineraries across the globe, with a network of 30 embarkation ports that makes it surprisingly flexible for a premium cruise line.

These ports are well distributed too, rather than heavily concentrated in one region, giving you a genuinely worldwide selection of starting points.

Holland America Line cruise ship, Nieuw Amsterdam, docked at the port of Skagway, Alaska. The large, impressive vessel, painted in dark blue with white superstructures, is set against the rugged and scenic backdrop typical of Alaskan ports. The photo captures the ship's sleek design and multiple decks, highlighting its capacity for luxury travel. The surrounding environment, with its mountainous terrain and clear waters, emphasizes the natural beauty and remote wilderness that attract visitors to this part of Alaska. This setting provides cruise passengers with a unique opportunity to explore the historical and picturesque town of Skagway, known for its role in the Klondike Gold Rush.

The line has a particularly strong presence in Alaska, where it’s long been considered one of the stand-out cruise operators.

You’ll – understandably – find two embarkation options in the Netherlands, namely Amsterdam and Rotterdam, which makes European sailings especially convenient. And for UK travellers, Holland America does operate seasonal departures from Dover.

Whether you’re looking for classic European routes, scenic voyages along the Pacific, or longer, more culturally focused itineraries, Holland America’s destination offering leans heavily towards variety and depth.

I recently took a Holland America cruise to Iceland – here’s the vlog, if you’d like to see what that was like…

Celebrity Cruises Destinations

Celebrity Cruises also provides a broad global programme, with 34 embarkation ports to choose from. While there is a slightly stronger concentration in North America and the Caribbean – accounting for 12 ports – the line still maintains a well-balanced selection across Europe, Asia and beyond.

Celebrity Flora

Celebrity’s destination offering is particularly notable in South America, where two embarkation ports support both classic itineraries and more adventurous sailings. This includes routes tailored towards exploration-focused experiences, especially when combined with the line’s expedition ships.

From stylish Mediterranean journeys to tropical escapes and remote wildlife-rich routes, Celebrity’s itineraries blend mainstream favourites with the option for something more unconventional, giving guests plenty of choice depending on how far they want to venture.

How to Choose

When it comes to mainstream destinations, there’s very little to separate Holland America and Celebrity. Both offer wide-ranging global itineraries without anchoring themselves to one specific region, so whether you’re planning a European city break, a Caribbean escape or a longer worldwide adventure, you’ll find strong options with either line.

The distinction appears once you look at their specialist routes.

Holland America excels in Alaska and the Pacific Coast, with more depth, variety and seasonal choice than most cruise lines. If those regions are high on your list, HAL has a clear edge.

Celebrity, meanwhile, pulls ahead in more remote and expedition-style destinations, particularly the Galápagos, where its dedicated ships offer a completely different kind of experience.

So your decision really depends on what you want from your itinerary. For scenic, classic cruising and stand-out Alaska routes, Holland America is hard to beat. For something more adventurous or off the beaten track, Celebrity is the more compelling choice.

Accommodation on both Holland America Line and Celebrity Cruises covers the familiar range of Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Suite categories, so your choice will often depend more on the specific ship than on the brand itself.

Each line offers its own take on premium comfort, but the basics remain reassuringly similar.

MS Koningsdam Ocean View

Inside cabins give you the lowest price point, while Oceanview and Balcony staterooms add more space and natural light. Suites on both lines come with an enhanced level of service and a bundle of extra perks, though the exact benefits vary by ship and suite class, making it worth checking what’s included before you book.

Solo travellers will find selective dedicated options. Holland America has single staterooms on a handful of its newer ships, and Celebrity also offers solo cabins on several vessels – particularly within the Edge Class.

On ships without these rooms, single guests may still face high supplements, so it’s worth choosing your ship carefully if travelling alone.

Holland America Staterooms and Suites

Holland America’s accommodation leans towards classic, refined styling, with an emphasis on comfort and calm rather than bold design. While the layout varies across the fleet, there are a couple of standout options worth knowing about.

Pinnacle Suites

These are the largest and most luxurious suites in the Holland America fleet. They offer a generously sized living and dining area, a spacious bedroom and a bathroom with an oversized whirlpool bath.

Pinnacle Suite MS Westerdam

You’ll even find a second whirlpool on your verandah, so you can relax indoors or outside depending on your mood and the weather. The suites also come with upgraded amenities and access to exclusive areas reserved for suite guests.

Spa Rooms

Available as Inside, Ocean View, Verandah or as a Neptune Spa Suite, these staterooms are located close to the ship’s spa and are designed to feel more tranquil.

Expect spa-themed amenities, a soothing décor scheme and features such as a premium massage showerhead. They’re ideal if you want your entire cruise experience to feel restorative rather than busy.

Celebrity Cruises Staterooms and Suites

Celebrity takes a more contemporary, design-led approach to accommodation, with some features that you won’t find anywhere else at sea. The variety is wider on the newest Edge-class ships, though fleet-wide you’ll still find plenty of upgraded options.

Infinite Veranda Edge Staterooms

Exclusive to the Edge-class ships, these innovative balcony staterooms blur the line between indoor and outdoor space.

At the touch of a button, the top half of the floor-to-ceiling window lowers to create an open-air veranda. It’s a striking, modern design that gives you more usable space and a closer connection to the sea.

Concierge Class

Available across most of the fleet, Concierge Class staterooms offer a more premium experience without stepping into full suite territory. You’ll enjoy improved furnishings, priority services and the support of an onboard concierge team to help with reservations, recommendations and any special requests.

AquaClass

AquaClass staterooms and suites are ideal for guests who want a wellness-inspired cruise.

They include enhanced room features, access to select spa facilities and priority booking for treatments. AquaClass guests also receive additional wellness amenities and a more serene onboard experience overall.

The Retreat

Celebrity’s suite-only complex, The Retreat, offers the most exclusive accommodations on the ship. Alongside spacious, luxurious suites, guests have access to private lounges, sun decks and restaurants not open to the rest of the ship.

It’s effectively a ship-within-a-ship experience, offering a quieter, more personal environment for those who want to escape the crowds.

How to Choose

If you prefer classic décor, a cosy atmosphere and well-designed but traditionally styled rooms, Holland America’s accommodation is likely to appeal more. The line’s Pinnacle Suites also offer a level of old-school luxury that feels indulgent without being flashy.

Celebrity, on the other hand, is the better choice if you enjoy modern design and want something a little different. The Infinite Veranda staterooms are a real highlight of the Edge-class ships, while The Retreat offers one of the strongest suite experiences of any mainstream cruise line.

For wellness-focused travellers, both lines have spa categories, but Celebrity’s AquaClass tends to offer a more complete, integrated experience. Solo travellers will find limited dedicated options on both brands, so it’s largely down to the individual ship.

Ultimately, if you want classic comfort and a touch of traditional elegance, choose Holland America. If contemporary design, innovative layouts and a more upscale, resort-style feel matter more, Celebrity is the better fit.

Holland America Line’s Food

Holland America offers an appealing mix of dining venues across its fleet, ranging from relaxed cafés and poolside bites to refined, multi-course meals in the more formal restaurants.

The emphasis is firmly on quality, with menus built around fresh, carefully sourced ingredients and dishes that feel noticeably more elevated than the typical mainstream cruise fare.

Main dining room Rotterdam

The line’s long-standing commitment to culinary excellence really comes through in its special programming. Holland America frequently hosts culinary-themed sailings featuring guest chefs, cooking demonstrations and intimate dining events. And thanks to its fresh fish initiative introduced in 2023, you’ll often find seafood sourced directly from the ports you visit, adding a genuine regional flavour to many dishes.

Dining on a Holland America ship tends to feel calm, polished and consistently well executed – perfect if you appreciate classic, well-crafted cuisine.

Celebrity Cruises Food

Celebrity doesn’t offer the vast number of venues you’d find on a mega-ship line, but what it does provide is exceptional quality across the board. Every restaurant feels thoughtfully designed, and menus are crafted with a premium, restaurant-forward approach that sets Celebrity firmly in the upper tier of the major cruise brands.

Celebrity Summit dining

The dining rooms themselves are stylish without being overly formal, leaning into a contemporary, upmarket feel.

You’ll find everything from modern French dining at Murano to the exclusive dishes available in Luminae, the suite-only restaurant created with input from Michelin-starred chefs. Whether it’s a simple lunch or a multi-course evening meal, dining on a Celebrity ship tends to feel like an occasion.

While the selection may be smaller than some competitors, the culinary standard on Celebrity is consistently high – arguably one of the brand’s strongest selling points.

How to Choose

If you enjoy refined dining with a touch of tradition, Holland America’s culinary style will likely appeal more, particularly with its focus on fresh ingredients and chef-led experiences. The atmosphere here is elegant, steady and rooted in classic cruise dining.

Celebrity, on the other hand, is the better fit if you prefer contemporary cuisine, modern restaurant design and a dining experience that leans more towards high-end city dining than traditional cruise fare. The suite-exclusive options also give Celebrity an edge for guests seeking a more luxurious, private dining environment.

In short, Holland America excels at polished, classic dining with regional touches, while Celebrity shines with modern, creative cuisine served in sleek, stylish settings.

Holland America Activities & Entertainment

Holland America focuses on traditional cruise activities, delivered with a refined and modern feel.

Expect a programme filled with art workshops, dance classes, cookery demonstrations, spa treatments and destination-themed enrichment, alongside staples such as the fitness centre and casino. Pickleball is also available across the fleet, which is still relatively rare in the wider cruise industry.

Evenings tend to be vibrant but not overwhelming. Theatre productions feature high-quality singers and dancers, while select ships offer live music in dedicated venues such as the Rolling Stone Lounge or the ever-popular B.B. King’s Blues Club.

It’s a line that leans into live performance and intimate venues rather than big spectacle, creating an atmospheric and sophisticated night-time experience.

Celebrity Cruises Activities & Entertainment

Celebrity’s onboard activities lean towards relaxation and enrichment, making the ships ideal for guests who enjoy quieter days at sea.

You’ll find a selection of wellness classes, golf simulators, pickleball, hot glass demonstrations on select ships and calm pool spaces designed for unwinding rather than high-energy action. Movies under the stars add to the relaxed, resort-style atmosphere.

Celebrity Xcel Entertainment

When it comes to entertainment, Celebrity offers a strong mix of original productions created specifically for its theatres. These shows take inspiration from classic Broadway and West End hits, but reimagined with cutting-edge staging and visuals. The result is polished, contemporary evening entertainment that feels immersive without relying on big-name licensed productions.

How to Choose

Holland America suits travellers who enjoy a mix of classic cruise activities and high-quality live music in intimate venues. Its entertainment feels refined yet warm, making it ideal for guests who prefer a more traditional, culturally focused approach to evenings at sea.

Celebrity, on the other hand, is perfect for those who enjoy a modern resort vibe, with a stronger emphasis on wellness, design-led spaces and stylish, tech-enhanced performances. If you like sophisticated but relaxed days paired with sleek, contemporary shows, Celebrity will likely feel more your style.

Overall, the choice comes down to atmosphere: Holland America offers a gentler, music-driven programme, while Celebrity leans into modern, elegant and visually impressive entertainment.

Holland America Kids’ Facilities

Holland America does offer dedicated kids’ clubs across the fleet, with a programme designed to be fun, creative and well structured. Activities typically include scavenger hunts, team challenges, themed parties, arts and crafts, sports sessions and plenty more to keep younger guests entertained.

HAL kids club

The clubs are split into three age groups, so children and teens can enjoy activities suited to them without being mixed into one large group. On the newest ships, the teen club in particular is seriously impressive – and after 6pm it actually becomes a family space, open to all ages, giving everyone a chance to relax and play together.

It’s important to remember, though, that Holland America isn’t primarily a family-focused cruise line. Outside of peak holiday periods there may be very few children on board, and on some sailings families can be a real minority.

Celebrity Cruises Kids’ Facilities

A Celebrity cruise is often described as one where kids cruise with you, rather than for the kids – and that’s largely true. The ships are designed first and foremost for adults, with a refined, stylish atmosphere that younger travellers need to be comfortable in.

Kids club room on Celebrity Cruise Line, designed with a playful and modern aesthetic. The room features a slide, colorful play structures, small tables and chairs, and a variety of toys, creating an engaging and safe environment for young children to play and explore.

Even so, the Camp at Sea programme is excellent, and on par with the quality you’d expect from Celebrity’s parent company, Royal Caribbean. Children can enjoy a broad range of games, movie nights and themed events, along with optional educational activities that stay fun and engaging rather than feeling like schoolwork. Teens also have their own dedicated space and activities, giving them freedom and independence on sea days.

Celebrity isn’t trying to compete with the big family-focused brands, but the youth facilities it does offer are thoughtful, modern and more than enough to keep children entertained.

How to Choose

If you’re travelling with children but still want a calmer, more adult-oriented cruise, both Holland America and Celebrity can work well. Neither brand is aimed squarely at families, so you won’t find the crowds of kids or the huge waterparks seen on more mainstream lines.

Holland America tends to attract very few younger passengers outside school holidays, so it’s better suited to children who are happy with quieter days and a more relaxed atmosphere. The family access to the teen club on newer ships is a real bonus, though, offering a fun shared space in the evenings.

Celebrity has the stronger kids’ club overall, with a more structured and varied programme that will suit most children and teens. It still retains an adult feel throughout the ship, but the youth facilities are slightly more polished and consistent.

Ultimately, if the grown-up vibe is your priority and the kids are easy-going, both lines will serve you well. If you want a bit more for them to do – especially on sea days – Celebrity has the edge.

Holland America Demographics

Holland America generally attracts an older crowd, with most guests falling somewhere between their mid-50s and early-70s. You’ll still see people in their 40s and well into their 80s on many sailings, but the overall atmosphere leans towards a more mature, slow-paced style of cruising.

Priority check-in area for Club Orange on a Holland America cruise, showcasing two guests from the waist down standing on a grey mat with 'CLUB ORANGE ORANGE PASS' text, flanked by blue velvet ropes and silver stanchions.

The line is especially popular with solo travellers, couples and friendship groups who appreciate a quieter ship and a more traditional take on cruising.

Families do sail with Holland America, but they’re far less common, largely because the onboard experience isn’t geared towards children. Even with good kids’ clubs, the ships are designed primarily for adults, with the focus on relaxed days, refined dining and cultural enrichment rather than high-energy thrills.

Celebrity Cruises Demographics

Celebrity Cruises appeals to a younger premium market, with most guests typically in their 30s, 40s and 50s. It’s a favourite among couples, solo travellers and groups of friends who enjoy its blend of stylish design, modern dining and a more contemporary onboard vibe.

Guests aboard a Celebrity Cruises ship enjoying a toast with refreshing drinks, featuring a man and a woman laughing and smiling while they receive their beverages, with the calm ocean and clear skies in the background.

Families do sail with Celebrity, but not in the same numbers you’d find on Royal Caribbean. Instead, the line tends to attract adults who appreciate an elevated cruise experience without the formality of some traditional lines. You’ll also find plenty of guests in their 50s and 60s who prefer Celebrity’s chic, modern aesthetic over more classic styles elsewhere in the premium market.

How to Choose

If you’re looking for a quieter, more mature atmosphere with fewer families onboard, Holland America is the clear winner. Its ships lend themselves to leisurely days, cultural activities and a relaxed pace that suits older travellers and those who want a more classic cruise environment.

If you prefer a younger mix of guests, a more contemporary vibe and a generally livelier atmosphere – without crossing into the full-on energy of a family mega-ship – then Celebrity is the better match. It balances sophistication with modern flair, offering a premium feel that appeals to adults across a broad age range.

Ultimately, your choice comes down to the style of cruise you want: traditional and serene with Holland America, or modern and cosmopolitan with Celebrity.

Holland America Prices

Holland America sits firmly in the premium bracket, so you shouldn’t expect bargain-basement fares. The line positions itself as offering a five-star experience, and that’s reflected in the price you’ll typically pay. Older ships may come in slightly cheaper, but with a relatively small and consistent fleet, the price difference isn’t usually dramatic.

Cruise mummy with Holland America Line

For a seven-night Caribbean sailing on one of the newer ships, you can generally expect to pay between £160 / $200 and £210 / $266 per person, per night for an Inside cabin.

Celebrity Cruises Prices

Celebrity Cruises is also a premium cruise line, and its fares tend to be a little higher than those of Royal Caribbean, even though the overall inclusions aren’t drastically different. Positioned as five-star rather than ultra-luxury, Celebrity sits comfortably above the mainstream market, and prices rise accordingly.

Cruise Mummy in a light blue dress stands in front of a large silver sculpture of two hands forming a heart shape on a Celebrity Cruises ship. The deck features a small pool in the background, and the woman smiles at the camera under a partly cloudy sky.

You can sometimes find sailings on the newer ships priced similarly to Royal Caribbean, but for a Caribbean itinerary on a modern vessel, fares typically reach around £150 / $190 per person, per night for an entry-level stateroom.

My Final Verdict

Holland America and Celebrity Cruises both sit firmly within the premium cruise market, yet they deliver that experience in notably different ways.

Holland America leans towards a more traditional, refined style of cruising, with smaller ships, elegant décor and a strong emphasis on destination depth and culinary quality. It’s calm, sophisticated and ideal for travellers who prefer an unhurried, classic approach to life at sea.

Meanwhile, Celebrity offers a more contemporary interpretation of premium cruising. Its ships feel modern and design-led, with stylish dining venues, impressive entertainment spaces and a subtly more lively atmosphere.

Their cruises attract a slightly younger mix of guests and provides a broader balance between relaxation, chic spaces and cutting-edge features, particularly on the Edge-class ships.

If you’re travelling as a family or with younger adults who enjoy a modern environment, Celebrity may feel like the more natural fit. But if you’re sailing solo, as a couple, or simply prefer a quieter, more traditionally luxurious experience, Holland America’s charm is hard to resist.

Both lines deliver excellent service and premium touches – your choice simply depends on which style of “premium” appeals most.

Starting earlier than in past years, the season offers additional sailings and more ways to experience the region. All itineraries are 14 days or longer, designed to showcase iconic landmarks and remote destinations at a relaxed, rewarding pace.

Holland America Line’s 2027–2028 South America & Antarctica Season

Nieuw Amsterdam will make her debut in South America during the season, sailing on voyages ranging up to 41 days from October 2027 through March 2028. Guests will be able to take in Antarctica’s icy landscapes, the Amazon River, the Chilean Fjords, and many of South America’s most celebrated ports.

“By adding more sailings, including a new Legendary itinerary, we’re giving guests more opportunities to experience South America and Antarctica,” said Dan Rough, vice president of revenue management for Holland America Line. “These voyages are designed to help travelers really connect with the region, from the energy of South America to the history of the Inca Coast and the awe of Antarctica. And that sense of place continues on board, with destination‑inspired dishes like Argentinian empanadas and enrichment such as Spanish or tango classes that bring the region to life throughout the journey.”

The 2027–2028 South America and Antarctica season underscores Holland America Line’s focus on destination‑driven travel, pairing extended itineraries with onboard experiences that reflect the regions guests visit. With Nieuw Amsterdam’s South America debut leading the season, travelers can explore farther and more fully while enjoying the comfort, service and enrichment that define the Holland America Line experience.

Nieuw Amsterdam Debuts in South America

Nieuw Amsterdam’s arrival in South America brings added capacity and an enhanced onboard experience to the region for the 2027–2028 season. The ship replaces Oosterdam and offers guests more stateroom and suite options along with a range of popular dining and enrichment venues.

On board, guests can enjoy favorites such as Tamarind and Morimoto by Sea, as well as programming designed to connect them more closely to the destinations they visit. From scenic cruising through glacier-lined channels to overland adventures to iconic sites like Machu Picchu, Nieuw Amsterdam adds another dimension to exploring South America and Antarctica in comfort and style.

Ancient Pathways Meet Epic Horizons

The season begins with Holland America Line’s 26‑Day Inca Coast: Mexico & Latin America Legendary Voyage, an extended journey from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to San Antonio (Santiago), Chile, sailing Oct. 7, 2027, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary features overnights in Manta (Quito), Ecuador, and Callao (Lima), Peru, and includes calls across California, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Chile — providing rare opportunities such as crossing the Equator and visiting Machu Picchu, along with meaningful time in vibrant coastal cities.

Guests trace the Pacific shoreline from North to South America, pairing marquee port calls and beachside stops with deeper exploration of ancient civilizations, rainforests and volcanic landscapes. Highlights include sailing the California coast; visiting Mayan gateways like Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; exploring Peru’s storied coast; and stargazing off Arica and the dramatic beauty of Coquimbo (La Serena), Chile.

Highlights include a four-day Antarctic Experience, along with sailing past the immense Pío XI Glacier, through Glacier Alley, the Beagle Channel and the winding Chilean Fjords.

Iconic Sites Beyond the Shore

Holland America Line’s overland adventures give guests the chance to step beyond the coastline and into the heart of South America’s most legendary destinations. A journey to Machu Picchu brings travelers face to face with the famed “Lost City of the Incas,” where stone terraces, sacred temples and precisely cut granite walls reveal the remarkable ingenuity of an ancient civilization. Walking the same paths once reserved for Incan royalty, guests experience the scale and significance of a city built high along a remote mountain ridge.

For those seeking natural wonders, the Galápagos Islands Overland Adventure offers rare access to one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth. Guests encounter giant tortoises wandering volcanic terrain, blue-footed boobies showcasing their distinctive coloring, Sally Lightfoot crabs darting across lava rock shores, and marine iguanas soaking up the equatorial sun. Each encounter highlights the islands’ extraordinary wildlife and evolutionary history, making the Galápagos a standout experience for travelers drawn to nature and discovery.

Robert Downey Jr. Named Godparent Of Disney Adventure

Disney has announced that Academy Award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. will serve as godparent for Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Disney shared the news ahead of the vessel’s maiden voyage next month out of its home port in Singapore.

“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Experiences and incoming Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company.

Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man was the cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the highest-grossing film franchise of all time. His decade-plus cinematic journey as the iconic character culminated in Avengers: Endgame, which grossed more than $2.79 billion worldwide. Downey was named an official Disney Legend in 2019 and will now star as Doctor Doom in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters Dec. 18.

Disney Adventure

“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest,” Downey said.

The Disney Adventure brings more than 100 years of Disney storytelling to life across seven themed areas, including several Marvel experiences. At Marvel Landing on the top decks, guests can have the ultimate Super Hero adventure on Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run, the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest of its kind at sea. In the open-air Disney Imagination Garden area, the “Avengers Assemble!” live stage production will feature jaw-dropping stunts and special effects during an action-packed battle of Marvel Super Heroes and Villains. And inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club, the Marvel WEB Workshop invites young recruits to try out new Super Hero suit prototypes and conduct training simulations using top-secret Avengers technology.

The new ship offers signature Disney entertainment and hospitality: character encounters; Broadway-style shows; themed stateroom and concierge accommodations; and more than 20 dining and lounge venues featuring world-class international and Asian-inspired cuisines and beverages.

The maritime tradition of appointing a godparent to bless a new ship is a centuries-old custom believed to bring good fortune before a maiden voyage. A video revealing Robert Downey Jr. as the Disney Adventure’s godparent can be viewed and reshared on YouTube.

Cruise Lines Cancel All Port Stops to Puerto Vallarta This Week

Cruise lines have canceled all port visits to Puerto Vallarta this week after violence rocked the popular port this past weekend.

Three cruise lines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line all had ships scheduled to visit Puerto Vallarta this week. All of those stops have been canceled.

Cruise Fever reached out to all three cruise lines and here is the statement that we’ve received from all three.

Norwegian Cruise Line (Norwegian Bliss):

“The safety and wellbeing of our guests, crew and the communities we visit are always a top priority. Due to ongoing security operations and the recent U.S. travel warning issued for select areas in Mexico, Norwegian Bliss’ scheduled call to Puerto Vallarta on Feb. 25, 2026 has been canceled. We are closely monitoring the ongoing situation and any additional itinerary updates for ships scheduled to call to Mexico in the near future will be communicated directly with impacted guests.”

Princess Cruises (Royal Princess):

“Our security team has been closely monitoring the situation in Western Mexico. To prioritize the safety of our guests and crew, we have cancelled Royal Princess’ planned visit to Puerto Vallarta on February 23rd. We are working on reviewing our onward itinerary and will update guests on a potential replacement port.

“Royal Princess departed its 7-day cruise on February 21st, sailing roundtrip from Los Angeles.”

Holland America Line (Zuiderdam):

“Our security team has been closely monitoring the situation in Western Mexico. To prioritize the safety of our guests and team members, we have cancelled our planned visit to Puerto Vallarta February 23.”

Cruise Fever also reached out to Carnival Cruise Line since they have one ship, Carnival Panorama, scheduled to visit Puerto Vallarta next Tuesday, March 3, 2026. At this time they have not made any changes.

No other major cruise lines have a ship scheduled to visit the port in the next two-and-a-half weeks. After that, Royal Caribbean has Navigator of the Seas scheduled for March 13.

Cruise lines will continue to monitor the situation in Puerto Vallarta and will only stop at the port when it is safe to do so.

Robert Downey Jr. Named Godparent of Disney Adventure

Disney Cruise Line’s newest and biggest cruise ship is getting an equally big name as its godparent.

Today, the cruise line announced that Robert Downey Jr. will serve as the official godparent for Disney Adventure, the 6,700-passenger ship set to begin sailing out of Singapore next month.

Robert Downey Jr. Disney Adventure

It’s a fitting choice for a ship that is full of Marvel-inspired rides and venues. Downey, who starred as Iron Man/Tony Stark, will now “bless” the ship as it gets ready for its March 10 maiden voyage.

Marvel Cinematic Universe is the highest-grossing film franchise of all time. And according to a press release from the cruise line,

“[Downey’s] unparalleled decade-plus cinematic journey as the iconic character culminated in Avengers: Endgame, which amassed more than $2.79 billion at the global box office. Downey was named an official Disney Legend in 2019 and will now star as Doctor Doom in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters Dec. 18.”

A “Gargantuan Blessing”

Maritime tradition usually involves a godmother breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow for good luck.  But Disney is putting its own spin on things.

Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s incoming CEO, said that Downey has “guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories,” making him the perfect person for the role, especially considering this new ship that has an entire deck dedicated to the Avengers.

Downey himself joked about the scale of the job and also called it an honor. “As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed,” he said. “I’ll do my darndest.”

Why Disney Adventure is Different

If you’re used to the classic Disney cruise experience, Disney Adventure is a whole new kind of ship. At 208,000 gross tons, it is bout 44% larger than Wish-class ships in the fleet.

Because of its size, it’s packed with features that haven’t been seen on a Disney ship before:

  • Ironcycle Test Run: Another reason Downey is the perfect fit as godparent for this ship, this ride a full-scale roller coaster and the first ever on a Disney ship.  Riders “test drive” a Tony Stark prototype on an 820-foot track.
  • Seven Themed Zones: The ship is divided into distinct areas like “Marvel Landing,” “Disney Imagination Garden,” and “San Fransokyo Street” (inspired by Big Hero 6).
  • Asian Influence: Since the ship is calling Singapore home, the dining reflects this region with more than 20 venues with international and Asian-inspired menus.

The Countdown

Disney Adventure has had quite the journey to get here. Originally started by another cruise line, the ship was purchased by Disney and transformed into what only Disney could create.

With Downey as the ship’s godparent, Disney Adventure is ready to take Marvel (and Mickey) fans all over Southeast Asia.

Disney is betting big on the idea that even at sea, everyone wants to feel like a superhero, and this choice as a godparent makes that clearer than ever.
