In what officials are calling a deliberate act, a 50-year-old German cruise passenger died last week after falling from the vessel Costa Smeralda while it was docked at Pier 12 in the Port of Civitavecchia.
Italian news sources, including RomaToday and TRC Giornale, reported that the incident happened around 2:00 p.m. on February 6, and the passenger plummeted from a height of about 30 meters (98 feet).
Emergency responders, including firefighters, were already on the scene from an unrelated incident that took place earlier at the Bonifazi station.
These responders were in the process of working on a helicopter landing to evacuate a different passenger who had gotten sick on board the ship.
But right after the man’s fall, onboard medical staff and emergency crew tried to resuscitate the man. A doctor on the scene pronounced him dead shortly after.
The port police and Coast Guard conducted an investigation and classified the incident as a “voluntary gesture”, meaning the fall was likely deliberate.
Costa Cruises confirmed the death of the passenger and gave their sympathies to the family.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the death of a guest of German nationality that occurred today in the port of Civitavecchia. According to an initial reconstruction, the guest jumped voluntarily onto the wharf while the ship was in port for normal operations. The crew intervened immediately, activating all emergency procedures”, the cruise line said in a translated statement.
Costa Cruises is an Italian cruise line under the umbrella of Carnival Corp & plc. Costa Smeralda is one of two Excellence-class ships with the cruise line. It was built in 2019 and is the second largest ship to operate with Costa Cruises.
The vessel can accommodate 6,554 passengers at max capacity and 5,224 at double-capacity.
The ship was cleared to depart for its next scheduled stop in Palma de Mallorca by 8:30 PM that evening.

Royal Caribbean is once again facing legal scrutiny after a former passenger filed suit over serious injuries sustained on the FlowRider surf simulator aboard Adventure of the Seas earlier this year.
Jason Keller has brought a negligence claim against the cruise line following an incident on 3rd February 2025, during which he fell headfirst while using the popular attraction. According to court documents filed on 9th February 2026, Keller fractured his neck in the fall and later suffered multiple strokes as a result of the injury.
The lawsuit alleges that Royal Caribbean failed to properly address safety concerns associated with the surf simulator and did not take adequate steps to prevent dangerous conditions on board the ship.
What The Lawsuit Alleges
In the claim, Keller states that he “violently fell, headfirst, and thereby fractured his neck and sustained other injuries,” while attempting to surf on the FlowRider.
The filing further alleges that he “suffered multiple strokes as a result of his broken neck and suffers from left side weakness.” Keller contends that although he received immediate medical attention on board, shipboard doctors misdiagnosed the severity of his neck injury. He claims that without appropriate treatment, his condition deteriorated.
A resident of Pennsylvania, Keller says the incident has left him with lasting physical and psychological effects, as well as significant financial losses. The suit seeks compensation for medical costs, lost income, pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life.
The FlowRider is a signature attraction across much of the Royal Caribbean fleet. Described by the cruise line as a 40-foot-long surf simulator, it allows guests to try boogie boarding or stand-up surfing while 30,000 gallons of water rush across the ride’s surface.
The attraction features on ships in the Icon, Voyager, Quantum, Freedom and Oasis classes. Several vessels, including Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, are equipped with two separate FlowRider installations.
However, Keller’s claim argues that the FlowRider aboard the 3,807-guest Adventure of the Seas, which weighs 138,193 gross tons, is more hazardous than versions found on other ships. The suit alleges that the simulator was shortened to better fit the vessel, potentially increasing the risk of injury. Publicly available documents do not specify the exact length of the installation on this ship.
The lawsuit also points to design changes adopted elsewhere within the FlowRider brand. According to the filing, “pillow padding” has been introduced in recovery zones to help reduce injuries, but Royal Caribbean has not yet implemented this update on Adventure of the Seas.
Assumption Of Risk And Safety Warnings
As part of its potential defence, Royal Caribbean is likely to rely on the concept of assumption of risk. Guests wishing to use the FlowRider are required to sign a waiver acknowledging the inherent dangers of the activity.
The cruise line’s website warns: “Riding on the FlowRider® is an extreme sport and high-risk recreational activity.”
It further states: “Sheet wave surfing on the FlowRider may result in physical or mental injury, including but not limited to serious injury to the head, neck, back, hips, arms, and legs, as well as the possibility of illness, disease, paralysis or death.”
In addition to signed waivers, crew members enforce height restrictions intended to promote safe participation. The attraction is limited to guests at least 52 inches tall, or 58 inches tall if they wish to surf standing up. Neither Royal Caribbean nor Keller’s attorney, Luis Alexander Perez, had publicly commented on the case at the time of publication.
Latest In A String Of Cruise Lawsuits
The new claim adds to a challenging period for Royal Caribbean on the legal front. In August 2025, the line was sued by a passenger injured when the Frightening Bolt waterslide shattered aboard Icon of the Seas.
Toward the end of 2025, the company was also hit with two separate wrongful death lawsuits, further intensifying scrutiny around onboard safety practices.
While attractions such as the FlowRider remain a major draw for thrill-seeking guests, the latest case is likely to renew debate over how cruise lines balance high-adrenaline experiences with passenger safety. As the matter proceeds through the courts, it may also shine a spotlight on whether design variations across ships can materially affect risk levels.

A harbour pilot was rescued from the sea on 10th February 2026 after falling while attempting to board a Princess Cruises ship off the coast of Kauai, forcing the vessel to cancel its scheduled port call.
The incident occurred as Emerald Princess, which carries 3,090 guests, was preparing to enter Nawiliwili Harbor. According to passengers on board, the pilot was climbing a rope ladder from a pilot boat positioned alongside the ship when he slipped and fell into the water on the port side.
Guests reported that a “man overboard” announcement was made immediately after the fall.
Eyewitnesses shared that the pilot had made several attempts to board in challenging conditions before losing his footing. One passenger said he fell an estimated 10 to 20 feet away from the ship’s hull rather than directly alongside it.
Crew members aboard the pilot vessel responded swiftly, manoeuvring the boat into position and retrieving the man from the water within minutes. Video footage circulating online shows the pilot being pulled back on board the pilot boat. He did not appear to have sustained any injuries.
One guest wrote, “A member of the pilot boat slipped off the ladder into the sea. Thanks to God for a quick recovery and a well-trained crew he is healthy and fine… I am amazed how well-trained and efficient the Emerald staff handled everything quickly and professionally. Well-done crew.”
At the time of writing, Princess Cruises has not issued a public statement regarding the incident. However, cruise lines typically provide automatic refunds for pre-paid shore excursions when a port call is missed.
Emerald Princess, a 113,561-gross-ton ship, departed Los Angeles on 4th February 2026 for a 16-night Hawaii sailing. Kauai was due to be the first port of call following several days at sea.
High Surf Advisory In Place
The cancelled visit came as Hawaii experienced severe weather conditions. On 8th February, the National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for east-facing shores of Kauai, warning of hazardous sea conditions.
According to the advisory, strong trade winds were generating breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet, with surf heights forecast between 8 and 12 feet. The warning was extended through to 6 p.m. on 11th February.
Rough seas can significantly complicate pilot transfers. In such manoeuvres, a small pilot boat must maintain precise positioning alongside a much larger cruise ship while the harbour pilot climbs a rope ladder secured to the vessel’s side. Swells and shifting winds can cause unpredictable movement between the two vessels, increasing the risk of slips or falls.
Passengers on board Emerald Princess reported that the ship had been listing by around five degrees as it approached the island. One guest commented, “The weather has been insane here in Hawaii. Our ship has been listing about 5 degrees for about 20 minutes.”
Following the aborted call in Kauai, the ship continued to Maui, where it was scheduled to arrive on 11th February. The itinerary also includes stops in Hilo and Honolulu before a final call in Ensenada, Mexico, ahead of the vessel’s planned return to Los Angeles on 20th February.

A recent check of the CDC’s website for cruise ship inspection scores revealed that three luxury vessels received a perfect 100 before closing out 2025.
Sometimes these reports are delayed on the website, and I check it regularly to see what ships have been inspected in recent history. This morning, I saw that some of these reports from inspections performed a couple months ago were now live.
While most people are walking around their cruise ship and enjoying their vacation, there is a group a very hard-working crew members making sure everything from the galley to the water systems remain as clean as possible.
Three ships, in the more luxurious category of cruising, earned a perfect score from the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP).
Perfect Trio
The surprise inspections take place when a ship enters a U.S. port. These three inspections took place within just a few days of each other.
Seabourn Encore (Seabourn Cruise Line) – December 2, 2025
Oceania Vista (Oceania Cruises) – December 3, 2025
Seven Seas Grandeur (Regent Seven Seas) – December 4, 2025
Historic Inspection Scores
I also looked back at the past inspection scores for all three ships, and one ship’s scores really stood out.
Oceania Vista (built in 2023): This ship has maintained a streak of perfection, earning a perfect 100 in every single CDC inspection since its debut, with perfect scores in September 2023, December 2024, May 2025, and December 2025.
Seven Seas Grandeur (built in 2023):Grandeur previously earned a 100 in October 2024 and a strong 96 in February 2024.
Seabourn Encore (built in 2016): This Seabourn ship saw a jump in its score at the end of the year, climbing to a perfect 100 in December after a previous score of 90 in April 2025.
Where These Ships Sail Now
While cruise ship inspections take place in U.S. ports, these ships sail all over the world.
Oceania Vista is currently on a 77-day sailing that began in California, and is now sailing the coastline of South America, visiting Chile for the next week. The ship is scheduled to arrive back in San Diego in early March.
Seabourn Encore is on the other end of the globe on a 14-day sailing out of Singapore. The ship visits Vietnam tomorrow and is scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong on February 15.
Passengers on Seven Seas Grandeur are just ending their one-way, 16-day sailing from Los Angeles, California to PortMiami in Florida. The ship actually just arrived this morning and is set to depart Miami on an 11-day sailing this afternoon.

Princess Cruises has received one of the highest international endorsements for Italian cuisine, with Alfredo’s Pizzeria aboard Sun Princess and Star Princess awarded the Ospitalità Italiana Certification.
Announced on 9th February 2026 from Fort Lauderdale, the recognition confirms that Alfredo’s Pizzeria meets strict standards for authenticity, quality and service, placing it among a select group of dining venues worldwide approved for preserving Italy’s culinary heritage.
The certification focuses on the use of traditional techniques, fresh ingredients and genuine hospitality, all of which are central to the Alfredo’s Pizzeria concept at sea.
The accolade applies specifically to Alfredo’s Pizzeria on Sun Princess and Star Princess, where guests are served Neapolitan-style pizzas that are made to order. Each pizza features hand-stretched dough and is baked in a stone Moretti Forni oven, reflecting methods more commonly found in specialist pizzerias ashore than on board cruise ships.
Authentic Italian Techniques At Sea
The Ospitalità Italiana Certification is widely regarded as the gold standard for Italian dining outside Italy.
Awarded only to establishments that demonstrate a deep respect for Italy’s culinary traditions, the certification assesses everything from ingredient sourcing and preparation methods to service standards and overall dining experience.
For Princess Cruises, the award reinforces a broader strategy to elevate onboard dining through authenticity rather than adaptation. Alfredo’s Pizzeria focuses on classic Italian flavours, traditional recipes and skilled chefs trained to replicate regional techniques, ensuring consistency across sailings while maintaining a strong connection to Italian food culture.
The timing of the announcement also coincides with National Pizza Day, which the cruise line marked by highlighting its long-standing collaboration with chef Tony Gemignani, a globally recognised pizza expert.
Partnership With A World Pizza Champion
Princess Cruises works closely with Tony Gemignani, a 13-time World Pizza Champion, who has developed a dedicated pizza menu for Alfredo’s Pizzeria. His involvement has helped shape five signature pizzas now served across the Princess Cruises fleet of 17 ships.
“Earning the Ospitalità Italiana Certification is a meaningful validation of our dedication to authentic Italian culinary excellence,
“As we celebrate National Pizza Day, we’re proud to recognise this achievement and our partnership with Chef Tony Gemignani to showcase how we bring our guests closer to the tastes, traditions, and hospitality of Italy, one perfectly crafted pizza at a time.”
Sami Kohen, Princess Cruises vice president of food and beverage.
Gemignani’s creations feature premium ingredients and bold flavour combinations, including soppressata sausage with hot honey, and gorgonzola paired with sweet fig preserves. The collaboration has already earned wider recognition, with Princess Cruises previously named by USA Today as offering the Best Pizza at Sea.
With the addition of the Ospitalità Italiana Certification, Princess Cruises further strengthens its position as a cruise line focused on destination-inspired dining, offering guests an authentic Italian pizza experience without leaving the ship.

This is amazing news for British cruisers… In summer 2027, Disney Wish will sail from Southampton for the first time.
This ship is completely different to any of the older, smaller Disney ships that have sailed in Europe so far. But if you enjoyed sailing on the Magic, the Dream or the Fantasy, I promise, you will fall in love with the Wish. She really is on another level.
I’ve just stepped off Disney Wish after my seventh Disney cruise (this one was a press trip) and honestly, she’s my favourite ship in the whole fleet.
Read on and I’ll tell you more about why this ship is like nothing the UK has ever seen. Or if you prefer to watch, take a look at the video below…
Why Disney Wish is so different to previous Disney ships sailing from the UK
Disney cruises from the UK really started to take off in 2021, when cruising restarted and Disney offered short ‘cruises to nowhere’ onboard the Disney Magic.
Since then, Disney has had a ship in the UK every summer, starting with the Magic, and then switching to the Dream and then the Fantasy in more recent years.
I’ve sailed on all of these classic ships, and while I loved them, they’re all a little older, and lacking some of the modern wow-factor of the newest Wish-class ships which have launched since 2022.
Disney Wish is newer and bigger
Disney Wish feels like a next generation ship because she is one.
Every space feels more immersive. The layout flows better. The staterooms are bright and airy. The public areas feel grand without being overwhelming. And everything just feels more polished.
Compared to older Disney ships, Wish feels more like a floating Disney resort than a traditional cruise ship. She’s all about storytelling, atmosphere and moments that make you stop and say, wow.
Indredible dining options
Like all Disney ships, the Wish has rotational dining, where you eat in one of the three restaurants each night, but with the same servers every day. I absolutely love the three restrurants on the Wish, and I feel that they cater really well for the whole family.
Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure – An immersive fairytale feast inspired by Frozen, with a theatrical show performed by Anna, Elsa, Olaf and friends
Worlds of Marvel – A tech-driven dining experience where you become part of an Avengers mission, complete with immersive multimedia and, if you’re lucky, a visit from Spiderman
1923 – A stylish, elegant restaurant celebrating the golden era of Disney storytelling with classic Hollywood glamour
There’s also the Marceline Market buffet, which feels much larger and with more options than on the other ships. There’s Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods, which again has more options such as pizzas, tacos, burgers, hot dogs and barbecue food.
Unique to the Disney Wish you’ll also find Joyful Sweets, which is an Inside Out themed dessert cafe. It’s an extra charge, but so worth it for a special treat!
Take a look below at everything my husband ate in one day onboard the Disney Wish… It’s impressive!
Incredible Live Entertainment
Visiting the theatre is the highlight of any Disney cruise. But the shows onboard the Disney Wish are right up there with some of the best I’ve ever seen.
Aladdin is fan-favourite Disney stage show brought to life with incredible special effects, humour, dazzling costumes and a live Genie who steals the show every night.
The Little Mermaid is fresh, modern reimagining of the classic story with stunning visuals, powerful vocals and a more emotional, cinematic feel than the versions on older Disney ships.
Disney Seas the Adventure is an original Disney Cruise Line production that weaves iconic characters into a high-energy, feel-good journey.
As well as the live shows, Disney Wish has TWO cinemas where you can watch the latest releases as well as the outdoor Funnel Vision screen by the pool.
There’s also live music, comedy and family games shows ar Lune – a two-storey entertainment venue.
Non-Stop Fun For All the Family
All the Disney ships have waterslides, but the Wish-class ships were the first to get the AquaMouse water coaster – Disney’s first-ever attraction at sea.
More than a slide, it’s an immersive ride with show scenes, music, lighting and special effect. It has 760 feet of tubes that take you all around the top deck and over the side of the ship.
As well as that, Disney Wish has a whopping ten swimming pools! The popular yellow slide is reimagined as Slide-a-saurus Rex, which is even more fun for kids. And little ones will adore the Toy Story Splash Zone.
The Hero Zone is a fantastic space where famiies can have fun together. There are so many tables of air hockey and table football, all free of charge to use.
At certain times, families can take part in the Incredi-Games, which is a fun inflatable obstacle course race. At other times, the space transforms into a sports court with all kinds of games.
Relaxing Adult-Only Areas
For those who enjoy cruising without children, the Disney Wish offers some incredible spots that are exclusively for adults.
Adult-only bars
Hyperspace Lounge is an adults-only Star Wars themed cocktail lounge with a “window” into space, and drinks that feel like part of the experience, not just a menu
The Bayou is gorgeous, New Orleans–inspired lounge with live music, cocktails and small bites in a luxurikous space.
The Rose is a sophisticated cocktail lounge inspired by Beauty and the Beast, offering elevated drinks and sunset views.
Nightingales is a stylish piano bar with live music and a relaxed evening vibe.
Keg & Compass ia cosy pub with sports on screens, beers on tap and a relaxed, nautical themed atmoshere.
Cove Café is a calm coffee lounge serving barista-made drinks and light bites
Adult-only restaurants
Palo is an elegant Italian restaurant offering elevated cuisine, attentive service and a calm, refined atmosphere with a wonderful brunch or dinner offering.
Enchanté offers Disney Cruise Line’s most luxurious dining experience, created by a Michelin-starred chef, with exquisite French-inspired tasting menus, flawless presentation and a truly special-occasion feel.
Adult-only relaxation areas
Quiet Cove is the most peaceful adult-only pool deck with infinity pools, plush loungers, rocking chairs and endless ocean views
Senses Spa Rainforest Room is well worth getting a day pass for. It’s a luxurious spa with sauna, steam room and heated beds plus a huge outdoor area with large whirlpools and comfy daybeds.
At certain times, Luna and The Triton Lounge may also be designated as adult only entertainment venues, depending on the show.
Exciting Itineraries
Sailing from Southampton makes cruising so easy. This is the first time a Wish-class ship has done cruises in Europe, so summer 2027 is set to be such an exciting time for British Disney fans.
