I Tried a Totally Different Caribbean Cruise

I always thought a big cruise ship was the best way to see the Caribbean. Then I stepped onboard a tall sailing ship in St Maarten and completely changed my mind.

Cruise Mummy on Star Flyer

I was invited to spend a week onboard Star Flyer, one of the three ships in the Star Clippers fleet. This is a very different kind of cruise from what I’m used to!

For the right person, it’s incredible. For others, it really won’t work at all. So, here’s my honest take on why a tall ship cruise can be the best way to cruise the Caribbean… and why it might not be for you.

Star Flyer

What Makes a Tall Ship Caribbean Cruise So Different

Star Clippers ships aren’t your typical floating resorts. Star Flyer and Star Clipper each have 16 sails, while the larger Royal Clipper has a whopping 42 sails, making her the largest fully-rigged sailing ship in the world.

On a tall ship like Star Flyer, the decks are open, the sails are working, and the crew are constantly visible as they sail the ship. While there are two plunge pools, there are no water slides, surf simulators or giant LED screens. Instead, you get wind, sea, and sails.

Plunge pool on Star Flyer

If you love the idea of spending time at sea under the sails sailing than simply waking up at a port, this already puts you in the right mindset.

The Magic of Sailing

One of the biggest differences between this and regular cruise ships is how the days begin and end. On most cruise ships, you dock early in the morning before you wake up. On a tall ship, you often wake up while still sailing. You can grab a coffee, head on deck and watch the islands appear ahead of you.

Sailing to a Caribbean island on a tall ship

Sail away is even more special. As the sails are raised, classical music plays and you can sit with a glass of Champagne and watch as the ship transforms. It’s calm, atmospheric and genuinely breathtaking.

The Ship Feels 200 Years Old (But With Modern Comforts)

Star Clippers’ ships are inspired by 19th-century clipper ships, and that traditional design is very much the point. The tall masts, working sails and exposed rigging aren’t just for show – they shape the entire onboard experience.

Star Flyer viewed from the mast

That said, you’re definitely not roughing it. The ships are very luxurious. It’s just traditional luxury rather than the modern luxury you may be accustomed to.

Of course, there’s air conditioning, comfortable cabins, great cocktails and modern bathrooms. It feels historic without feeling uncomfortable, which is a tricky balance but one they get right.

Getting Hands-On With the Sailing Experience

This isn’t a cruise where you just watch from the sidelines. Guests can help hoist the sails, climb the mast and relax on the bow sprit net at the front of the ship.

Me on the boe spirit net

There are also talks and activities throughout the cruise, including maritime history, navigation, knot tying and even lighter cruise-style sessions like napkin folding and fruit carving. If you enjoy learning how things work, this is fascinating and there are always plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Why the Destinations Are Better Than Big Cruise Ports

Let’s be honest. There’s only so many times you can enjoy places like Nassau or Cozumel when seven mega ships are docked at once.

Star Flyer carries just 170 guests, which means it can visit small, lesser-known Caribbean islands that big ships simply can’t access. These are places you’ve probably never heard of, and that’s exactly why they’re so special.

Caribbean island on a cruise

The cruise I took sails around the Leeward Islands, with a mix of tender ports and occasional wet landings where you step straight from the boat into the sea and onto the beach.

wet landing

The ports on my itinerary were:

  • St Maarten
  • River Bay, Barbuda
  • Cabrits, Dominica
  • Terre-de-Haut, Îles des Saintes
  • Deshaies, Guadeloupe
  • Falmouth Harbour, Antigua
  • Gustavia, St Barts

These places are small, uncrowded, and feel far more authentic than the usual cruise stops. In each one, there were a range of excursions offering all different types of activities. I felt that they were very reasonably priced.

Water Sports and Activities (All Included)

If you’re an active traveller, this is where Star Clippers really shines. Water sports are included at no extra cost, with options like kayaking, paddleboarding, water skiing, laser sailing, and snorkelling. On day one, you’re given snorkelling equipment to use for the entire cruise.

wstersports on the beach

There’s no pressure to join in. You can be as active or as relaxed as you like, but if you want value for money and days filled with activity, this cruise delivers.

Surprisingly Affordable Drinks and Extras

This genuinely surprised me! I have no idea why the drinks onboard are so cheap, but they are!

The cocktails are large and cost €7 to €8. Beer is around €4. There are no gratuities added to drinks, and prices are often cheaper than a pub back home.

Star Clippers cocktail

Even the spa is good value. I paid €60 for an hour-long massage, which is far less than you’d expect on a big cruise ship where it usually costs at least three times that price!

Aside from that, there’s not much else to pay for. Gratuities are optional, the recommended amount is €10 per person per day, which again is much less than most other cruise lines.

Atmosphere On Board

The atmosphere on a Star Clippers cruise is relaxed, friendly and very social.

There are no fixed dining times and you can sit with whoever you like. You naturally get to know people because there are so few guests. On my sailing, around half of the guests were German and half were from North America.

Star Flyer dining room

There were very few Brits, which makes me think this is an option many British cruisers simply don’t know about (but you do now!)

The announcements were made in both English and German. When there were talks to attend, they would usually have an English version and then a German version later.

Dining on a Tall Ship

On Star Flyer, there’s just one dining room and it’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At 5pm you can also get snacks in the Tropical Bar. Throughout the day, if you get hungry, you can help yourself to fruit or nuts.

The food is excellent, with plenty of choice at each meal. Special diets are handled brilliantly. I’m vegan and was given a dedicated vegan menu every day, with some fantastic options to choose from!

Star Clippers vegan menu

If you love having 20 different restaurants to choose from, this won’t suit you. But, if you prefer quality over quantity, it works very well. The service was impeccable and the crew really did a fantastic job of looking after the guests.

Entertainment on Board

You won’t find Broadway-style shows here! Entertainment is low-key but enjoyable. There’s live music most evenings, quizzes, talent shows and occasionally something special like a Caribbean steel band brought on board in port.

Caribbean Steel band

Many evenings are best spent on deck, under the stars, which is exactly what this kind of cruise is about.

Who This Cruise Is NOT For

This part is important, because as much as I loved this cruise, I don’t want anyone booking it and ending up disappointed. This is a very specific type of cruise, and it simply won’t suit everyone. But that’s okay.

Mobility and Accessibility

Star Flyers ships aren’t accessible for people with mobility issues, and that’s something you need to be completely comfortable with before booking.

There are no lifts anywhere on board and steep staircases between all decks. There are also tender ports at most destinations, sometimes with wet landings where you step straight into the sea.

tender boat

To board the ship, you also need to walk up steps along the side of the ship. These can feel quite steep and you’ll need to hold on with both hands as the ship can be moving quite a lot.

Star Flyer with stairs on the side

Because of this, the cruise is definitely not suitable for wheelchair users, and it’s also a poor choice if you rely on a walking stick, struggle with stairs, or have balance issues. If accessibility is important to you, a modern cruise ship will be a much better option.

Seasickness

If you’re prone to seasickness, this is another big consideration. Because the ship is much smaller than a modern cruise ship, you feel the movement of the sea more. When the sails are up, the ship also sails at a slight constant tilt, which feels very different to the gentle side-to-side motion of a large ship.

I don’t get seasick and actually enjoyed the movement, but I know that for some people, this would be uncomfortable or even a dealbreaker. If the thought of feeling the sea worries you, or you prefer a very smooth sailing, this may not be the right cruise for you.

Suggested read: Who Seasickness Affects And Why

Cabin Size

Cabins are small and traditional. There are no balconies, large seating areas or baths.

Cabin on Star Flyer

Most cabins are compact, with clever storage and everything you need, but not much extra space. Most double cabins also have the bed pushed against a wall, meaning one person may need to climb over the other at night unless you choose twin beds instead.

The cabins are clean, comfortable, and well maintained, but if you like to spend a lot of time lounging in your cabin, you’ll probably feel happier on a newer, larger ship.

Final Verdict: Is This the Best Way to Cruise the Caribbean?

For the right traveller, absolutely yes!

If you love sailing, active days, quiet evenings, small ports and a more authentic Caribbean experience, this could be the best cruise you ever take.

rasing the sails on Star Flyer

However, if you need elevators, calm seas, big shows, multiple restaurants and lots of onboard entertainment, you’ll be much happier on a large cruise ship.

There’s no right or wrong choice. It’s all about picking the cruise that fits you.

Personally, I just love the feeling of being close to the ocean, with the wind in your hair and the calm, relaxed atmosphere. I also love the thrill of trying new water sports, climbing the mast and visiting tiny, off-the-beaten-path destinations.

This image features two majestic Star Clippers ships sailing side by side on the open ocean under clear blue skies. Their tall masts are adorned with full white sails, showcasing the elegance of traditional sailing vessels. The scene highlights the beauty and grandeur of cruising aboard these unique, wind-powered ships.
Star Flyer (left) and Royal Clipper (right)

Last year, I was lucky enough to also sail on Royal Clipper. The ships are very similar, but Royal Clipper is bigger with a few extra features. Royal Clipper has a gym and steam room that’s underwater with windows so there’s a chance you may see fish swim past as you workout! I did miss having a gym on Star Flyer, although there are exercise classes each morning.

Another big advantage that Royal Clipper has is the water sports platform. From here you can jump straight from the ship into the sea! Of you can lie on a floating mat that’s attached to the ship by a rope!

watersports platform on Royal Clipper

That said, when choosing a Star Clippers cruise, I think your main consideration should be the itinerary. While I loved my Mediterranean cruise on Royal Clipper too, travelling between the Leeward Islands with just the power of the wind was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one that I’ll never forget.

New York City Is Getting a New “Fun Italian Style” Cruise Ship in 2027: New Carnival Deployments

Carnival Cruise Line just announced that some of its ships will be moving to new ports in 2027/2028.  On top of a couple of special Carnival Journeys sailings, another Italian style ship will be replacing Carnival Venezia in New York City.

Carnival Firenze ship

Carnival has two “Fun Italian Style” ships in the fleet: Carnival Venezia and Carnival Firenze.  These ships were originally designed for Costa Cruises before being brought over to Carnival.

Carnival Venezia currently splits her time between Port Canaveral and New York.  This ship is offering mostly 7-day cruises out of Port Canaveral now and moves to New York in May 2026.  The new announcement from Carnival states that Carnival Firenze, the other “Fun Italian Style” ship will be replacing her in May 2027.

From New York, Firenze will offer 4- and 5-day cruises to Bermuda and Canada in addition to a 5-day voyage on Aug. 19, 2027, that visits Portland, Maine and Saint John, Canada.

But before Carnival Firenze heads to New York, Carnival is offering a special Carnival Journeys voyage on the ship.

Special 11-Day Sailing on Carnival Firenze

Firenze is currently sailing out of Long Beach on the West Coast.   Prior to her arrival in the Manhattan cruise terminal, the ship will be sailing a special 11-day voyage to the Southern Caribbean out of PortMiami on May 16, 2027

This one-off sailing will include stops at Celebration Key, Grand Bahama; Aruba; Curaçao; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Carnival Splendor with 4 New Itineraries

For the 2027/28 season, Carnival Splendor is offering a mix of short Australian sailings and a few longer international trips. Cruisers looking for a quick trip can opt for a three-day “sampler” cruise or a four-day visit to Moreton Island in Australia.

Carnival also announced two Carnival Journeys sailings that connect Australia and Singapore.

The first is a 15-day trip departing Sydney on July 31, 2027, which stops in Airlie Beach and Cairns before heading to Lombok and Bali, eventually crossing the Equator to reach Singapore.

After the ship undergoes a scheduled dry dock maintenance, it will make the 16-day return journey back to Sydney.

Two of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Newest Ships to Homeport in Puerto Rico at the Same Time

Sailing out of San Juan, Puerto Rico offers a huge advantage for cruisers wanting to get a more immersive experience.  The key difference?  You get to experience more ports of call and more exotic locations by starting out in the Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line just announced that two of their newest ships will be homeporting in San Juan at the same time, both offering 7-day cruises to different destinations.

Norwegian Viva San Juan Puerto Rico

Prima Class in Puerto Rico

From November 2027 through April 2028, both Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva will call San Juan home. This is the first time NCL has homeported two of its newest, most modern ships in Puerto Rico at the same time.

By starting your cruise further south in San Juan, the ships can reach deep Caribbean ports much faster than if they sailed from Florida. This means fewer days at sea and more days exploring:

  • Norwegian Prima will sail on Saturdays, visiting Tortola, St. Maarten, Barbados, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts.
  • Norwegian Viva will sail on Sundays, offering a different southern route that includes the popular “ABC Islands” of Aruba and Curaçao.

Norwegian Prima is currently scheduled to already offer cruises out of San Juan starting in November 2026 through April 2027.  So, after a few months in Europe the ship will return to San Juan to join Norwegian Viva.

Across its entire winter season, Norwegian Cruise Line’s ships will average 9.5 hours in port. By starting in San Juan, these ships cut down on travel time, allowing for the late-night departures and longer stays that give you more time to explore the islands.

These are also some of the newest ships in the NCL fleet with Prima entering service in 2022 and Viva in 2023.  Only Norwegian Aqua is newer having been built just this year.

Seven Ships Sailing from Florida

While Puerto Rico offers a more itinerary-packed starting point, Florida remains the go-to embarkation spot for most Caribbean and Bahamas sailings for the 2027/28 season.

NCL will have seven ships sailing out of the Sunshine State, providing a massive variety of options for those who prefer to depart from Miami, Port Canaveral, or Jacksonville.

  • Miami: Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Jewel, and the new Norwegian Luna (coming in 2026) will offer everything from 3-day Bahamas weekenders to 11-day Panama Canal cruises.
  • Port Canaveral: Norwegian Aqua, Norwegian Breakaway, and Norwegian Epic will cover the Eastern and Western Caribbean.
  • Jacksonville: Norwegian Dawn returns to JAXPORT for its second season of 4- and 5-day Bahamas cruises.

Many of these Florida-based itineraries will stop at Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island. By the time these sailings begin, the island will feature several major upgrades, including a brand-new pier that allows ships to dock directly, a large, heated pool, and the new Great Tides Waterpark.

15 Things That Annoy Cruise Passengers the Most

Over 37 million people will board a cruise ship in 2025 and that number is projected to be even larger for 2026.

cruise ships Nassau

PhotoAiD, an online passport photo service, conducted a survey among American cruisers to see what annoyed them the most when they take an ocean cruise.

Even with the many things that annoyed them, 84% said they were likely to take a cruise again with only 6% saying they were unlikely to return.

So what annoys cruisers the most? Here are the top 15 complaints among American cruise passengers.

The number one complaint was rude or inconsiderate behavior by other passengers that includes drunkenness, loud arguing, and inappropriate attire in dining areas.

Coming in second is the high cost of drink packages. Drink packages were added by cruise lines 10-15 years ago and the price of them has steadily risen over the years.

drink packages

The third biggest complaint is something that many of us, including myself have complained about. It is smoking or vaping in prohibited areas including on cabin balconies.

Rounding out the top five are expensive onboard essentials (sunscreen, toiletries, and medication) and hidden fees and mandatory charges (gratuities, service fees, and port taxes.)

The number six biggest complaint is line cutting at buffets and shore excursions.

The seventh complaint will become less common since more cruise lines are building piers at private islands. But it’s long lines for tender boats at ports that don’t have docking facilities.

Sky Princess cruise ship with lifeboat tender

The eighth, ninth, and 10th biggest complaints are unsanitary habits (not washing hands at buffets, coughing without covering), long waits for seating at buffets and specialty restaurants, and difficultly securing reservations at specialty restaurants.

The 11-15th biggest complaints on ocean cruises are:

  • Busy buffets and dining rooms at peak times
  • Limited seating on sun decks
  • Excessive public displays of affection
  • Chair hogs
  • Crowded ports

Other complaints from cruisers were poor elevator etiquette, overcrowded pools and hot tubs, and not enough seating in entertainment venues.

The company analyzed hundreds of complaints online and asked respondents to weigh in.

You can see more about their study and a complete list of the biggest cruiser complaints here.

Carnival Passengers Get $100 Credit and New Itinerary After Ship Stuck in Port

Even though a cruise ship is a great place to be “stuck”, no one wants to miss out on a port of call because a technical issue.  But these problems pop up from time to time.

After Carnival Firenze lost a day off its voyage because of an IT problem, the ship is now racing towards its first port of call in Cabo.

Felipe Sanchez | Dreamstime

Carnival Firenze was supposed to leave the Port of Long Beach on Monday, but some kind of technical or communication issue kept the ship in port until Tuesday at 1:20PM.  The extra night in port means that a port of call had to be cancelled.

Here is the latest on where things stand.

Why the Ship Was Stuck

While we still don’t know the full extent of the problem on the ship, passenger reports claimed that the Carnival Hub app was not working and the crew were using pens and paper to take food and drink orders.

Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador, John Heald commented that it was a connectivity problem.

“It is Internet connectivity, and I know the teams are working very hard, but I can also say without doubt that the guests are having so much fun,” Heald stated.

John Heald also replied to a comment on Facebook about the situation saying, “The team are doing everything they can and you’ll be hearing an announcement any moment now from the Captain letting you know some good news and I know that we will also be in touch and will take care of everybody.”

A few details about how the cruise line is helping make up for the inconvenience have now been shared.

What Passengers Are Getting

Since the cruise was shortened and a port was missed, Carnival is giving guests some money back to help make up for the trouble.  Although, it should be noted that the cruise was not necessarily shortened because passengers were still able to enjoy the ship while in port, even though the casino and shops were closed.

Passengers for this sailing have confirmed the following:

  • $100 credit: Each cabin is getting a $100 credit to spend while they are on the ship.
  • Refunds: Anyone who booked an excursion in Ensenada through Carnival will get their money back, along with any port fees or taxes for that stop.

And because this is a Carnival ship, we’re sure the cruise ship director and entertainers have kept busy making sure everyone on board still has a great time.

Full Speed Ahead

Because the ship got such a late start, it is now about a full day behind schedule. To get to Mexico as fast and still safely as possible, it looks like the ship is sailing near its top speed capabilities.

Data from CruiseMapper shows Carnival Firenze is currently traveling around 22 knots, which is relatively fast for a ship with a gross tonnage of 135,000 and can accommodate 5,260 at max capacity.

To keep the trip on track, Carnival had to make some cuts:

  • Ensenada is cancelled: The ship is skipping this stop entirely.
  • Straight to Cabo: The crew is heading straight for Cabo San Lucas, with an expected arrival on Thursday, December 18.
  • Heading home:  The cruise is still expected to get back to Long Beach on Sunday, December 21.

Carnival recently released some new details about the port that is being missed on this itinerary.  Ensenada is going to get a complete makeover with new swimming pools and thrill rides.  You can read about that here.

Carnival Corporation Cruise Brands To Show All 104 Matches of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Cruise guests sailing with several Carnival Corporation brands in 2026 will be able to watch every match of the FIFA World Cup live at sea.

Carnival Corp World Cup Cruises

Princess Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Seabourn and P&O Cruises confirmed on 16th December 2025 that they have secured the rights to broadcast all 104 matches of the 2026 tournament. Coverage will run from 11th June to 19th July 2026 via the Sport 24 Special Event Channels.

The FIFA World Cup, held once every four years, is one of the most watched sporting events in the world. The 2026 edition will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with global broadcast rights held by sports media company IMG.

While five Carnival Corporation brands are already confirmed, additional cruise lines may still finalise agreements closer to the start of the tournament.

Where Guests Can Watch Matches Onboard

The matches will be available both in staterooms and in public venues across the ships, giving guests multiple ways to watch live coverage while sailing.

On Cunard ships, screenings will take place in the Golden Lion pub, while P&O Cruises will show matches in its Brodie’s venue.

Games involving England will receive special prominence, with larger screenings planned in the SkyDome on P&O Cruises ships and The Pavilion on Cunard vessels, reflecting strong demand from UK-based guests.

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises will broadcast selected matches on outdoor Lido Deck screens, weather permitting.

Holland America Line will also screen matches in its World Stage theatres, while Princess Cruises plans to host organised viewing parties where guests are encouraged to wear their team’s colours.

“From private staterooms to open-air decks, guests will be able to enjoy the atmosphere and excitement of the tournament as we bring the spirit of the stadiums to sea next summer,” said Kate Garden, commercial director of IMG.

Cruises Sailing During the Tournament

The cruise lines have highlighted a wide range of itineraries that will coincide with the World Cup, allowing guests to combine live football with destination-focused holidays.

On Holland America Line, Noordam will feature the broadcasts during its 7-day Alaska Explorer cruise sailing roundtrip from Seattle on 5th July 2026, with calls at Ketchikan, Juneau and Sitka. For guests seeking a longer voyage, Zuiderdam’s 14-day Canada and New England cruise departs Boston on 20th June 2026.

Arvia SkyDome

Princess Cruises has also outlined several sailings that align with the tournament schedule. These include a 7-night Mediterranean cruise onboard Sun Princess from Athens to Barcelona departing 20th June 2026, as well as Diamond Princess’ 9-night Circle Japan itinerary, sailing roundtrip from Yokohama on 2nd July 2026.

“The FIFA World Cup is one of the most fan-driven global events, and our guests shouldn’t have to choose between exploring the world and watching the world’s best teams compete,” said Lorna Warren, vice president of hotel operations and guest experience for Princess Cruises.

“By bringing live coverage to all 17 ships, we’re making sure fans can experience incredible destinations and cheer on every match whether they’re soaking up the sun in the Caribbean, taking in the Mediterranean coast, or sailing past glaciers in Alaska,” added Warren.

With cruises operating across multiple regions throughout the summer of 2026, the broadcasts are expected to be a major draw for football fans keen to follow every moment of the tournament without missing their holiday.

Don’t worry if you aren’t a football fan, though – the ships will have plenty of venues where you can escape it!

Carnival Firenze Hit By Overnight Delay After Technology Failure In Long Beach

A Carnival Cruise Line ship bound for the Mexican Riviera was forced to remain in port overnight after a technology failure disrupted its scheduled departure from Long Beach, California.

Carnival Firenze

Carnival Firenze was due to sail on a six-night roundtrip cruise on 15th December 2025, but guests were informed that a connectivity issue had affected onboard systems, preventing the ship from leaving as planned. The exact cause of the problem has not been publicly detailed.

Passengers reported that the ship was scheduled to depart at 3pm, but remained docked well into the evening. As of the morning of 16th December 2025, Carnival Firenze was still alongside in Long Beach although it did depart later that day.

“I’m currently on ship in LA, and we were supposed to leave the port at 3PM but it’s 6PM and we still haven’t left. Is this normal?” one guest posted on Reddit on the day of departure.

“They said their whole system crashed when we were entering on the boat. Also, my app isn’t working at all and isn’t recognizing that I have a booking, and also the wifi isn’t connecting for any guests,” the passenger added.

Other guests onboard reported similar issues, including the Carnival Hub app being unavailable and ship-wide network problems.

Itinerary Changes Likely After Delayed Departure

The outage raised immediate concerns for both guests and crew, as onboard systems manage everything from bookings and shore excursions to dining reservations and internet access.

An announcement made onboard during the afternoon of 15th December acknowledged that the ship’s departure could be delayed and outlined potential changes to the itinerary.

Carnival Firenze was originally scheduled to arrive in Cabo San Lucas on 17th December 2025 for an overnight stay, before calling at Ensenada on 20th December and returning to Long Beach on 21st December.

Guests were told that if the ship departed later on 15th December, the itinerary would be adjusted, with Ensenada moved to 16th December, followed by Cabo San Lucas on 18th and 19th December.

However, if the ship was required to remain in port overnight, which ultimately occurred, Carnival Firenze would sail directly to Cabo San Lucas for its planned overnight stay. Further details regarding the remainder of the cruise were to be shared once the ship was underway.

As of 17th December, the ship has bypassed Ensenada, presumably cancelling the port as it travels to Cabo San Lucas.

Carnival Thanks Guests for Their Patience

Some guests sought updates from Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, who frequently communicates with passengers via social media.

Responding on 16th December 2025, Heald said he did not yet have new information but reassured guests that further updates would come directly from the ship.

“I don’t have any news yet. Thank you so much, the Captain will be in touch with everybody on board and I’m sure everybody will continue to have a wonderful time. Thank you for your patience,” Heald wrote.

He later said, “It is Internet connectivity, and I know the teams are working very hard, but I can also say without doubt that the guests are having so much fun,”

Carnival Firenze joined the Carnival Cruise Line fleet in April 2024 following its transfer from sister brand Costa Cruises. The 4,126-guest ship is one of two Italian-inspired vessels introduced by Carnival, alongside Carnival Venezia, which now sails from Port Canaveral.

Both ships were refurbished prior to entering service with Carnival, retaining their Italian design elements while adding the popular dining venues, bars and entertainment options found across the wider Carnival fleet.

Teacup Chihuahua Becomes Onboard Celebrity On Royal Caribbean Cruise

Cruise guests are used to meeting fellow travellers from all walks of life, but a recent sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas featured a particularly unexpected star.

A 3-pound teacup chihuahua named Blondie became an onboard sensation during a December 2025 cruise, with videos of the tiny dog quickly going viral on social media.

Blondie appears alongside her owner on TikTok under the handle @bruiserandellewoods, a nod to the film Legally Blonde.

While Royal Caribbean has not confirmed the exact sailing, videos show Blondie arriving at PortMiami on 4th December 2025, when the Freedom-class ship was embarking on a four-night Caribbean cruise. From embarkation onwards, the small dog drew attention from guests and crew alike.

Despite the ship’s full slate of entertainment, many passengers seemed far more interested in meeting the tiny canine, who quickly became a familiar sight around the vessel.

Viral Videos Show Dog Winning Over Guests and Crew

In one widely shared TikTok video, viewed more than 300,000 times, Blondie can be seen happily snuggling with fellow passengers who eagerly line up for a cuddle.

“She’s become the emotional support animal for the entire cruise ship,” her owner wrote in the caption.

Other clips show crew members pausing during their workday to greet Blondie, often breaking into broad smiles. For crew members who spend months away from home and work long hours, the brief interactions appeared to provide a welcome morale boost.

The dog’s calm behaviour and gentle temperament helped turn her into an unofficial mascot for the voyage, with guests actively seeking her out during the cruise.

How a Dog Was Allowed to Sail

While the idea of a dog freely roaming a cruise ship may surprise some travellers, Blondie’s presence onboard was permitted under Royal Caribbean’s service animal policy.

Most dogs are not allowed to sail, but Blondie is a trained service dog. Her owner had to secure advance approval before the cruise and had previously left her at home after not completing the process in time for earlier sailings.

“Royal Caribbean International welcomes service dogs on all ships. Please note we do not accept pets,” the cruise line’s policy states.

“A service dog is defined as ‘any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability.’ Service dogs are not considered pets.”

Guests travelling with service dogs must submit documentation at least 60 days before sailing, including medical notes, vaccination records and pet passports. Even with approval, a dog may still be denied boarding if it displays aggressive or disruptive behaviour at the port.

Special Rules for Service Dogs at Sea

Service dogs onboard must follow strict guidelines to ensure the comfort of all guests. Animals are typically assigned designated relief areas, often located near crew-only sections, to maintain sanitation standards. Failure to use these areas can result in removal from the ship.

Blondie’s owner also appears to have taken additional steps to be considerate. The dog is frequently carried in a purse while moving around the ship, preventing her from being underfoot or climbing onto furniture in public areas such as dining venues.

In the cabin, a blanket is placed on the bed for Blondie to sleep on, keeping ship bedding clean. All interactions with other guests and crew are supervised, ensuring that cuddles only happen when welcomed.

Blondie’s viral cruise moment has not only delighted social media users but has also highlighted how service animals can successfully travel at sea when policies are followed carefully, proving that even the smallest guests can make a big impression onboard.

MSC Cruises Orders Brand New Ship Class As Fleet Expansion Accelerates

MSC Cruises has placed a major new ship order as it continues its rapid transformation into one of the world’s largest cruise operators.

MSC ship being built

The cruise line confirmed on Monday, 15th December 2025, that it has ordered four brand new ships from German shipbuilder Meyer Werft, with options in place for two additional vessels.

The announcement was made in Berlin and marks the first time MSC Cruises has partnered with the Papenburg-based shipyard.

The ships will form a completely new “New Frontier” class, with the first vessel scheduled for delivery in 2030.

Under the current plan, one new ship would then join the fleet each year, creating a highly ambitious construction timeline that could see up to six ships delivered during the next decade.

This agreement represents a significant shift for MSC Cruises, which has historically built ships primarily in France at Chantiers de l’Atlantique and in Italy with Fincantieri.

“Meyer Werft’s track record, expertise and proud history make it a true beacon of European shipbuilding. Together, we will create vessels that redefine the cruise experience while preserving the craftsmanship that keeps Germany at the forefront of maritime engineering,

“The New Frontier class will enable us to design new and exclusive itineraries, offer exceptional guest experience and will feature next-generation environmental technologies that will advance our net-zero 2050 commitment.”

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises.

Meyer Werft described the order as a landmark moment for the company, providing long-term economic stability and supporting thousands of jobs across the German shipbuilding sector.

“This new order marks a significant milestone in the 230-year history of MEYER WERFT,” said Dr. Bernd Eikens, CEO of Meyer Werft. “We are delighted to welcome MSC Cruises as a new customer and strategic partner, and we are truly honored by the trust they have placed in us.”

What Is Known About the New Frontier Class

While full specifications have yet to be released, the New Frontier class ships are expected to measure around 180,000 gross tons. That would place them slightly larger than Royal Caribbean’s Quantum class and broadly in line with Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel-class vessels.

Passenger capacity is expected to reach approximately 5,400 guests, although MSC Cruises has not yet confirmed figures based on double occupancy.

MSC’s recent fleet development has been dominated by very large ships. Its World class vessels measure more than 216,000 gross tons, placing them among the largest cruise ships in service alongside Royal Caribbean’s Oasis and Icon class ships.

By comparison, the New Frontier class appears designed to strike a balance between scale and flexibility. Slightly smaller than the World class, the ships could allow MSC Cruises to deploy them to a wider range of ports and itineraries while still carrying a substantial number of guests.

Fleet Growth Raises Questions Over Older Ships

If deliveries begin as planned in 2030, the New Frontier class would overlap with MSC Cruises’ ongoing World class programme. MSC World Europa entered service in 2022, followed by MSC World America in March 2025. MSC World Asia is scheduled for 2026, with MSC World Atlantic due to follow in 2027.

Additional World class ships are already planned for 2028, 2029, 2030 and 2031. Should two New Frontier ships also enter service in 2030 and 2031, MSC Cruises could operate a fleet of 31 ships by 2031, assuming no retirements occur.

That expansion naturally raises questions about the future of the cruise line’s oldest vessels. MSC’s Mistral class ships Armonia, Sinfonia, Lirica and Opera entered service between 2003 and 2005, with MSC Armonia having been built in 2001.

While no retirement or replacement plans have been announced, it is possible the New Frontier class could eventually replace older ships as MSC Cruises continues to modernise its fleet.

Further details on the design, onboard features and deployment of the New Frontier class ships are expected to emerge closer to the start of construction, as MSC Cruises continues one of the most aggressive expansion strategies in the cruise industry.
