Five Interesting Facts About Cruise Ship Staff You Probably Didn’t Know

Cruise ship staff play a significant role in how each voyage runs, yet most passengers know very little about the people working on board. We know that they greet and assist guests with a steady smile, handle daily requests, and support onboard activities, but not a lot beyond that.

If you were ever curious about shipboard routines and everyday life at sea, here are five details about crew members that you probably didn’t ever get a chance to learn about.

Crew Members Come From Countries All Over the World

Most cruise ships bring together staff from an exceptionally wide range of countries. Many passengers don’t realize just how international the workforce is until they pay closer attention to the name badges or accents they encounter on board.

This is particularly true for large vessels with over three thousand passengers, which often include crew members from more than a hundred nations. This international mix creates an environment shaped by many different cultures and experiences.

In practice, this diversity can influence communication, teamwork, and the rhythm of daily operations behind the scenes. At the same time, it can also add to the distinct atmosphere that makes cruise ship work so exciting and different from most land-based jobs.

Ship Staff’s Employment Rights Are Protected By the Jones Act

Many passengers are familiar with the rules that apply to their own travel arrangements, but far fewer know that cruise ship staff work under a separate legal framework. Crew members qualify as seafarers, which means their employment rights are shaped by maritime laws rather than the labor standards used for land-based jobs.

These regulations outline many aspects of the employment relationship, including how their contracts are structured and how their responsibilities are assigned. What’s more, this framework also influences how disputes are handled and how certain workplace matters are resolved out of view.

In some situations, this system can involve processes such as Jones Act settlements, which deal with specific employment-related claims at sea. Overall, the combination of maritime rules and shipboard procedures creates a work environment that differs significantly from what most travelers imagine.

The Crew Is Housed in a Completely Separate Part of the Ship

If you ever wondered where staff members go after their shift ends, here’s a chance to get your answer. It turns out, staff members live on board throughout their entire contract, but they are housed in designated crew-only areas that are not accessible to passengers.

These sections are arranged so crew members can move quickly between living spaces and work areas without crossing guest corridors. Their cabins are compact and functional, built to accommodate extended stays while keeping essential storage within easy reach.

Furthermore, the layout and scheduling of their separate dining rooms, lounges, and common areas also support their daily routines. These dedicated spaces help maintain order and create an organized environment that keeps the ship running smoothly.

Ship Staff Work Far Longer Hours Than Passengers Realize

Another aspect that most travelers don’t think about has to do with how long ship staff remain on duty each day. Unlike land-based workplaces, cruise ship schedules are continuous and demand a level of consistency most land jobs never require.

On most sailings, staff members work in shifts that stretch across the entire day, and their responsibilities often continue long after guests have finished their activities. According to a 2022 survey by the World Maritime University, the average workday for seafarers is about 11.5 hours, while their weekly total is close to 75.

Working at this pace, keeping a smile, and assisting guests throughout the day requires a steady level of focus. So, next time you interact with ship staff, be sure to keep in mind how much effort they put into every part of your experience.

Crew Members Rarely Get the Chance to Leave the Ship at Ports

Finally, our last fact also concerns the demands of shipboard life. Unlike travelers who plan their days around excursions and sightseeing, crew members actually very seldom get a chance to leave the ship and explore the ports they visit.

This is because most staff members remain on duty during port days to handle maintenance tasks, prepare for upcoming activities, or manage passenger flow as they disembark and return. Even when short breaks appear on their schedule, crew members often use that time to rest, stay connected with family, or attend to personal responsibilities on board.

As a result, most crew members experience very little of the destinations they visit despite returning to them over and over again.

Final Words

In summary, working at sea is a very distinct challenge that can’t be compared to any land-based job. With long contracts and close living arrangements, cruise ship staff members form routines and connections that develop in their own way. At the same time, they experience a version of shipboard life that is hard to fully understand without being part of it.

15 Opportunities For Singles To Meet Other Singles At Sea

The singles supplement on cruises can be a deal-breaker. Assuming you get a friend to share your cabin and the cruise line can configure beds as two singles, that is one problem solved. Are there opportunities for single people to meet other single people when you spend a week or more at sea? Is age an issue?

Singles at Sea

  1. Cruising by age category. Cruise lines have different personalities or target audiences. Virgin Voyages does not allow passengers under age 18. Saga Cruises requires passengers to be aged 50 or older. You can bring a child (or carer), but they must be aged 40+. You will mingle with people of an age similar to your own.
  2. Themed cruises. Do some online research. There are rock ‘n roll cruises, foodie cruises, big band cruises, literature cruises, classical musical cruises, and cruises for history buffs. Lifestyle cruises also build on this idea. You have a good chance of meeting someone sharing your interests if you pick a cruise focusing on that demographic. Your travel agent can help.
  3. Faith-based cruises.  There are vacations where you can travel with like-minded individuals sharing similar religious beliefs. (1) In addition to organized cruises, if you belong to a religious community in your town, from time to time, someone organizes an escorted vacation to religious sites in Europe or further afield. It might not be a cruise, but you are surrounded by people sharing your beliefs.
  4. Cruises for singles. Some lines are known for encouraging solo cruisers. NCL is a good example. They have studio cabins and the Studio Lounge as a meeting space. (2)

Opportunities For Singles to Meet Other Singles

Opportunities For Singles to Meet Other SinglesOpportunities For Singles to Meet Other Singles
Cruise travel offers many opportunities to meet fellow singles and friends alike.

Now, let us assume you are traveling on a cruise ship with a broad spectrum of the population. Are there opportunities for singles to meet? Here is the good news: This is what cruise directors seek to facilitate, especially during days at sea.

  1. The daily solo travelers get together. This is a standard feature on cruises. “Solo” sounds better than “singles.” My wife and I have been told they grow in size from day to day as more passengers give it a try.
  2. Specialty gatherings. There will likely be a daily gathering for Alcoholics Anonymous onboard. On Cunard it is discretely worded as “Friends of Bill W.” You might also see “Friends of Dorothy” for the LGBTQ+ meet ups, although the titling might have changed.
  3. Morning scripture services. I’ve seen this on Cunard ships. This is an un hosted gathering (like many other interest groups). Like-minded people spend time together.
  4. Service club gatherings. What comes to mind when you think of service clubs? Organizations like Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis. This can also include ones that don’t immediately come to mind, like the Women’s Institutes in the UK.
  5. Scotch and martini tastings. You have an interest in a certain spirit. You know your scotches. Maybe you are a bourbon drinker. The ship often organizes events for these interested enthusiasts. If you a a serious scotch drinker attending a scorch tasting, you will find others who share your passion.
  6. Daily pub quizzes. These are a favorite of mine. Strangers quickly become friends. Teams form. Some ships hold quizzes several times a day. The room is often packed. These are a great leveler because everyone knows something, but no one knows everything.
  7. Sporting activities. This includes poolside games, table tennis and other activities. Often there are tournaments.  You can join in, meeting people along the way. Cunard often offers fencing classes.
  8. The onboard gym. If you are a gym rat, you spend plenty of time in the gym at home. It’s not a “meet market” like bar, but you tend to meet people who live an active lifestyle like yourself.
  9. Dance classes. These are often organized at different levels of skill. You can meet people who are just starting out or people at an advanced skill level.
  10. Bridge classes. Bridge players can be very focused. The ship might organize these classes in the same space as they keep board games.
  11. Late night dancing. Your ship comes alive at night. Every bar and lounge likely have live music into the early hours. There will be dancing. Find the lounge with the music you like and you should find plenty of kindred spirits.
  12. Art classes. Your ship might have watercolor classes daily throughout the week. There might be an art show at the end of the voyage. You can meet people while learning the basics of painting.
  13. Ship’s choir. Do you sing back home? If you are British or involved singing at your local church, this might be the case. Here is an opportunity to meet people with a similar interest.
  14. Improv groups. I experienced this on Cunard’s Queen Victoria and thought it was fabulous. Members of the audience gather on stage in a large group, pair off and are given an exercise. Everyone is making it up as they go along.  It puts people in a good mood.
  15. Shore excursions. How many movies have you seen where people either ask to join another person on a shore excursion or meet because they booked the same onshore experience? This is another way to meet people with similar interests.

There are many opportunities for singles to meet other singles onboard a cruise. It is often done through activities for like-minded people.

Propulsion Problems Hit Multiple Cruise Ships, Causing Delays and Itinerary Changes

A fresh wave of mechanical issues has disrupted voyages for several major cruise lines, with Cunard, Carnival Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises all forced to delay arrivals, amend itineraries, or cancel sailings in the second half of November 2025.

Three cruise ships with propulsion issues

The problems, centred largely around propulsion systems limiting ship speed, have affected thousands of guests on both sides of the Atlantic.

Queen Mary 2’s Repairs Trigger Knock-On Delays and Port Changes

Cunard Line’s flagship Queen Mary 2 first encountered difficulty during a Northern Lights cruise earlier in November, when a technical defect in a propulsion pod forced the ship to divert to Bremerhaven rather than Hamburg for repairs.

The unexpected change also caused the cancellation of a short Southampton mini-cruise.

The ship did, however, manage to depart Southampton on 19th November for her scheduled transatlantic crossing to New York. Yet the earlier problems continued to ripple into subsequent voyages.

When Queen Mary 2 arrived in Brooklyn on 26th November, she was roughly an hour behind schedule, leading Cunard to instruct embarking guests to arrive two hours later than originally planned to ease congestion.

The Caribbean sailing that followed has also required itinerary changes.

The call to St Kitts on 4th December has been cancelled entirely, with the ship instead extending its visit to Barbados into an overnight stay from 2nd–3rd December.

The stop in St Lucia has been shifted to 4th December to accommodate the adjusted schedule.

Cunard has not explicitly confirmed that propulsion problems prompted the reshuffle, but the operational constraints align closely with the earlier defect.

Carnival Conquest Delayed by Overnight Mechanical Trouble

Carnival Cruise Line has faced its own round of propulsion issues. Shortly after Carnival Horizon suffered significant speed limitations in mid-November, guests aboard Carnival Conquest were informed on 20th November that the ship had developed a mechanical issue restricting its speed overnight.

Carnival Conquest

As a result, Conquest arrived several hours late at Celebration Key on 20th November during a 4-night Bahamas cruise from Miami. Carnival shortened the port stay and issued $50 onboard credit per stateroom.

Although Conquest appears to have resumed normal operation on subsequent sailings, Carnival has not confirmed the root cause of the incident.

These disruptions follow earlier propulsion problems on the same vessel in January, when engine difficulties delayed its return to port.

MSC Meraviglia Adjusts Bahamas Itinerary Due to Speed Restrictions

MSC Cruises’ MSC Meraviglia has likewise been affected, with planned maintenance reducing the ship’s speed ahead of its 30th November Bahamas cruise from New York.

MSC Meraviglia

Guests received notification on 24th November that key ports would be impacted:

  • Port Canaveral arrival on 2nd December moved from 1 pm to 5:30 pm, with all excursions cancelled due to limited time ashore
  • Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve arrival on 3rd December shifted from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., though the stay was extended to 8:30 p.m.
  • Calls to Nassau and the scheduled return to New York on 7th December remain unchanged

Meraviglia has experienced similar propulsion-related issues previously, including an itinerary cancellation in May 2025 when divers carried out underwater repairs in Portland, Maine.

MSC is compensating guests with automatic refunds for cancelled excursions and $100 onboard credit per person (up to $200 per cabin).

A Common Thread: Ageing Propulsion Systems Across the Industry

While each situation differs, the clusters of issues highlight how ageing tonnage, high year-round utilisation, and complex propulsion technologies can converge to create operational challenges.

Queen Mary 2’s pod design has a long history of complications, Carnival’s Vista-class ships have had recurring propulsion limitations, and MSC Meraviglia required propeller blade replacement earlier in the year.

For guests, the recent wave of disruptions serves as a reminder that mechanical problems – though frustrating – are an unavoidable reality in the world of modern cruising.

Cruise lines continue to stress that safety remains the top priority, and flexibility is essential when unexpected repairs alter the best-laid travel plans.

7 Hottest New Cruise Ships Debuting in 2026

2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the cruise industry with over a dozen new ocean ships making their debut.

However, since not all cruise ships are created equal, here’s our top seven hottest new cruise ships for 2026.

Disney Adventure just might be the most anticipated new ship debuting in 2026. The ship will be the largest in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet and their first over 200,000 gross tons in size.

The ship has been under construction for around seven years. It was originally going to be named Global Dream and sail with Genting until the cruise line went bankrupt. Disney bought the half completed cruise ship and has spent the last several years completing the vessel and turning it into the ultimate Disney cruise ship.

Disney Adventure will have the longest roller coaster at sea, an Ironman themed ride on the top deck of the ship. Other rides in the Adventure Zone include Pym Quantum Racers and Groot Galaxy Spin.

Disney adventure

Toy Story Place will be the ship’s waterpark that will have several pools, hot tubs, water slides, and interactive splash pads.

They will be part of the ship’s seven themed areas with Disney Imagination Garden being the central hub of the ship.

Disney Adventure is currently scheduled to debut on March 5, 2026. The ship will sail short three- and four-day cruises out to sea and homeport in Singapore.

Norwegian Luna

Norwegian Luna will be NCL’s second Prima Plus class ship and debut on March 10, 2026.

  • Stadium, an outdoor space for complimentary activities

Norwegian Cruise Line just announced that the ship will have a dedicated show to the world’s most iconic showman, Elton John.

After a repositioning cruise to Miami, the ship will sail seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Four Seasons I

Four Seasons I

The most luxurious new vessel debuting in 2026 will be the new yacht, Four Seasons I. The vessel is promising to set a new standard for luxury at sea.

On marina days, the full prowess of Four Seasons I comes into play, offering guests direct access to the sea.

Police Appeal for Help to Find Missing Cruise Passenger in St Maarten

Authorities in St Maarten have launched a public appeal to help locate Ann Evans, a 55-year-old cruise passenger who did not return to her ship after going on a shore excursion earlier this week.

Evans was travelling aboard Holland America Line’s Rotterdam when she was reported missing during a port visit to the Caribbean island.

Passenger Failed to Return From Shore Excursion

The ship, sailing a 12-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, arrived in St Maarten on Thursday, 20th November 2025.

According to police, Evans disembarked the ship at around 10 am as part of an organised tour.

She left the tour bus at a scheduled stop in Marigot, on the French side of the island, but did not return to the bus or make her way back to the ship later that day.

“Efforts to locate Ms Evans are ongoing, and law enforcement authorities on both the Dutch and French sides of the island have been alerted.”

St Maarten Police

Authorities Issue Public Appeal

Police have asked anyone who may have seen Evans or has information about her whereabouts to contact local authorities immediately.

They also issued a direct message to the missing passenger.

“If Ms Evans herself sees this message, she is kindly requested to contact her family, the Police Force of Sint Maarten, or the French Gendarmerie as soon as possible to confirm her safety,” the statement said.

Images of Evans have been shared across social media as part of the search effort.

In a later update, the St Maarten police said that they had reason to believe a woman matching Evans’ description, and carrying her passport, had checked into a hotel on the island.

However, they have not verified whether this is Evans, and have still put out a message asking her to reach out to both police and her family to confirm her safety.

Ship Continued Voyage as Scheduled

Despite the ongoing search, Rotterdam continued its cruise as planned and is due to return to Port Everglades on Friday, 28th November 2025.

The ship carries up to 2,668 guests at double occupancy, rising to over 4,000 passengers when fully booked.

It remains unclear whether Evans has any personal links to St Maarten or the wider region.

Comparisons With Previous Cruise Disappearances

The circumstances have drawn comparisons with other recent cruise-related disappearances where passengers failed to return from shore leave.

In some past cases, passengers later confirmed they were safe and had chosen not to re-join their cruise. However, at this time, authorities stress that nothing has been confirmed regarding Evans’ situation.

Police say the priority remains locating her and confirming her wellbeing.

How to Share Information

Anyone with information on Ann Evans’ whereabouts is urged to contact:

  • The Police Force of Sint Maarten
  • The French Gendarmerie
  • Or local emergency services on the island

The search is ongoing, and authorities continue to ask for public assistance in locating the missing passenger.

Search Launched After Passenger Goes Overboard From Marella Explorer 2

Spanish maritime authorities have launched a major air and sea search after a 76-year-old British cruise passenger reportedly went overboard from Marella Explorer 2 in waters north of the Canary Islands.

Marella Explorer 2

The incident occurred while the ship was sailing from Madeira towards the Canary Islands, with the alarm raised after the passenger was seen entering the water.

Emergency Response Activated at Sea

Spain’s maritime rescue service confirmed the search began immediately and resumed at first light the following morning.

“It has been confirmed he went overboard and is aged 76. The search for him started yesterday and is continuing today,” a spokesperson said.

Once alerted, the ship’s captain slowed the vessel and activated emergency procedures, which included:

  • Reviewing onboard CCTV footage
  • Deploying marker buoys
  • Carrying out circular search patterns

Search Focused Off Tenerife Coast

According to local reports, the incident took place around 16 nautical miles off Punta de Teno, on the north-west coast of Tenerife.

Tenerife Coast

Rescue teams deployed:

  • Two specialist search vessels
  • An emergency helicopter

The operation is being made more difficult by deep waters and strong currents, which authorities say can reach around two knots in the area.

So far, officials have confirmed that no trace of the missing passenger has been found.

TUI Confirms Overboard Incident

TUI, which operates Marella Cruises, confirmed the incident in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a guest was seen entering the water while the ship was on passage to La Gomera. Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time,”

TUI statement

TUI added that a care team is supporting the passenger’s family and that the cruise line is fully cooperating with local authorities as the search continues.

Investigation Ongoing

Search operations remain active, with Spanish authorities continuing coordinated efforts by air and sea. No further details about the circumstances of the incident have been released.

The ship was en route through a remote stretch of ocean when the incident occurred, where rescue efforts are often complicated by currents, depth and weather conditions.

Authorities have not confirmed how long the search will continue.
