Best & Worst Cunard Ships Ranked by Real Reviews

Cunard Line is one of the world’s most iconic cruise lines – a name that’s become synonymous with elegance, heritage, and that unmistakable sense of old-world charm.

Loved by those who appreciate a more traditional style of cruising, Cunard’s fleet of famous “Queens” continues to set the standard for refined travel at sea.

Four Cunard ships

But which ship stands above the rest?

I’ve compared real guest reviews to see how each of the Queens ranks – and whether there’s a clear favourite or if all three deliver that timeless Cunard experience equally well. Let’s find out.

How I Gathered the Data

Before we dive in, I wanted to clarify how I put this list together.

I’ve not (yet) had the pleasure of sailing on all the Cunard ships, so using my own personal opinion would be biased. Instead, I’ve used genuine reviews for the ships from those who have sailed.

I gathered the data from three of the biggest independent review sites – Cruiseline.com, Cruise Critic, and TripAdvisor. Those sites are big enough that they aren’t skewed by one or two reviews – the averages are fair.

I’ve then calculated the average review score across all three sites and come up with the ranking order. I’ll be honest, the scores are pretty tight.

Also, the worst average score on this list is 3.46 out of 5. That’s not a bad average. So even the ‘worst’ ship on this list is still a good ship.

Now with all that context, let’s get into it.

The Best Cunard Ship

According to customer reviews, the best Cunard ship is Queen Mary 2, although Queen Victoria is only marginally behind her.

The largest ship in the fleet, Queen Mary 2, is classed as an ocean liner unlike her sisters, and offers classic transatlantic sailings from Southampton to New York.

1. Queen Victoria

Cunard Queen Victoria cruise ship at sea

Cunard’s Queen Victoria takes the top spot, earning the highest average review score of 3.85 out of 5. She’s slightly smaller than Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth, but what she lacks in size, she more than makes up for in charm and atmosphere.

Guests consistently praise her elegant design, impeccable service, and that distinct Cunard sense of tradition that makes every sailing feel special. The décor – rich woods, sweeping staircases, and grand lounges – evokes the golden age of ocean travel while still feeling comfortable and refined.

Queen Victoria Britannia Restaurant

Despite her slightly smaller scale, Queen Victoria still impresses with three swimming pools, a ballroom, a theatre, seven restaurants, and 13 bars and lounges.

Some reviews do mention compact cabins and tight shower spaces, but overall, Queen Victoria remains the best-rated Cunard ship for offering that classic cruise experience done right.

2. Queen Mary 2

Queen Mary 2 at sea

Once the highest-rated ship in the fleet, Queen Mary 2 now takes second place – but she still captures the hearts of those who love the elegance and grandeur of a true ocean liner.

As Cunard’s flagship, she was purpose-built for transatlantic crossings, slicing through the Atlantic with a top speed of just over 30 knots and a cruising speed of 26 knots – several knots faster than most cruise ships. During the winter months, she switches to warmer itineraries such as Caribbean sailings, offering guests a change of pace without losing her refined atmosphere.

She’s also the largest ship in the Cunard fleet, yet carries only around 2,695 guests, giving her a wonderfully spacious feel. Unlike modern mega-ships, Queen Mary 2 was designed to provide open lounges, sweeping decks, and a sense of calm – never crowds.

One of her most unique features is the onboard kennel, making her the only ship at sea where passengers can travel with their dogs and cats – a charming nod to her transatlantic heritage.

Reviews highlight the classic ambience, impeccable food, and that unmistakable sense of history you feel the moment you step aboard.

A few long-time fans mention that standards have slipped slightly in recent years and staffing can feel stretched at times, but overall Queen Mary 2 remains a truly iconic way to cross the Atlantic in style.

3. Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth cruise ship at sea

Queen Elizabeth comes in third, with an average review score of 3.73 out of 5. She shares a near-identical layout with her sister ship Queen Victoria, though she launched three years later and feels just a touch more modern as a result.

Slightly larger thanks to her steeper stern, Queen Elizabeth can accommodate around 40 more guests. Her décor sets her apart – a beautiful Art Deco design inspired by the original Queen Elizabeth ocean liner of the 1930s, giving her interiors a timeless, glamorous feel.

The lobby of the Queen Elizabeth Cruise Ship

In terms of onboard features, there’s little difference between her and Queen Victoria. The Winter Garden on Victoria becomes the Garden Lounge on Elizabeth, with a static glass roof instead of a retractable one, and Elizabeth includes a Britannia Club section in the main restaurant – ideal for guests who prefer private dining.

Negative reviews are relatively mild, often coming from loyal Cunard fans who feel some of the classic touches have faded over the years. A few mention that the service can feel stretched in busy areas, but overall, Queen Elizabeth remains a favourite for those who appreciate her elegant style and relaxed atmosphere.

4. Queen Anne

Cunard Queen Anne

The newest addition to the Cunard fleet, Queen Anne, officially joined the lineup in May 2024, marking a bold new chapter for the cruise line. She combines Cunard’s signature elegance with a more modern, contemporary design, appealing to both long-time fans and a new generation of cruisers.

Sailing primarily around Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, Queen Anne introduces fresh features like innovative dining concepts, stylish pool deck areas, and the Bright Lights Society, a glamorous entertainment venue unique to this ship.

Cunard Queen Anne Bright Lights Society

While her design and facilities have been praised, early reviews have been mixed, earning her an average score of 3.46 out of 5 – placing her fourth in the fleet. Guests love the ship’s look and feel, but some note that service and organisation still have room to improve, which is common for a new launch as operations settle in.

There’s no doubt that Queen Anne represents the future of Cunard, and as more guests sail on her, it’ll be interesting to see whether she rises up the rankings in the months ahead.

The Scores

The table below shows the review scores for each ship and their overall average.

Queen Victoria 4.2 3.9 3.5 3.86
Queen Mary 2 4.2 3.7 3.5 3.80
Queen Elizabeth 4.0 3.7 3.5 3.73
Queen Anne 4.3 3.1 3.0 3.46

The Bottom Line

Unlike some of my other ship rankings, there isn’t a huge gap between Cunard’s fleet – each ship delivers that unmistakable blend of elegance, tradition, and British charm that the line is known for.

Queen Mary 2 still stands out for her unique ocean liner design, while Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria offer a slightly softer, more modern take on the classic experience – and now Queen Anne brings a fresh, contemporary twist to the family.

But what do you think? Do you agree with the rankings, or do you have your own favourite among Cunard’s Queens?

So, grab your passport and a cup of hot cocoa – it’s time to explore the world’s most festive cruise ports to visit at Christmas.

1. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona at Christmas

Barcelona shines as a unique and vibrant destination for festive cruises in December. This Catalonian capital, steeped in rich traditions and cultural festivities, transforms into a festive wonderland during the Christmas season.

One of the city’s most beloved customs is the Caga Tió, a whimsical Christmas log that children ‘feed’ in the days leading up to Christmas, eagerly anticipating the gifts it will ‘produce’ on Christmas Eve.

Barcelona is renowned for its elaborate Nativity scenes, known as “Pessebres,” which are intricately designed and displayed throughout the city, reflecting the deep religious heritage and artistic flair of the region.

A centrepiece of Barcelona’s Christmas celebration is the Fira de Santa Llúcia, a bustling outdoor market dating back to 1786. Located in front of the stunning Barcelona Cathedral, this market is a hub of festive activity, offering everything from handcrafted gifts and decorations to typical Catalonian holiday treats.

In December, several cruise lines, such as MSC Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, P&O Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line, include Barcelona in their itineraries. As this is a major departure port, you may wish to spend a few days staying in a Barcelona hotel and exploring the city either before or after your cruise.

2. New York City, USA

NYC Christmas

New York City is an iconic destination for festive cruises in December. Known worldwide for its extravagant holiday displays and celebrations, NYC transforms into a dazzling winter spectacle during the Christmas season. The city’s festive spirit is infectious, with its streets and landmarks adorned with spectacular lights and decorations.

A central feature of New York’s Christmas celebration is the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, an iconic symbol of the holiday season in the city. This towering tree, brilliantly lit and decorated, draws visitors from around the world, serving as a backdrop for countless holiday memories.

The window displays of stores like Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue are a visual delight, each telling a unique holiday story through intricate designs and animations. The city also hosts a variety of festive shows, including the renowned Radio City Christmas Spectacular, adding to the rich cultural experience of the holiday season in New York.

Several cruise lines, such as Cunard, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line, feature New York City in their December itineraries.

3. Vienna, Austria

Vienna Christmas

Vienna, known for its imperial architecture, gets a festive makeover during the Christmas season. The city hosts several Christmas markets, with the Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz being particularly magical.

Vienna comes alive with the sound of classic Christmas music, adding to the city’s enchanting charm. Visitors can enjoy traditional Austrian Christmas treats and crafts.

Many river cruise lines like Uniworld, Riviera Travel and Avalon Waterways offer Danube river cruises that stop in Vienna during December.

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen captures the essence of ‘hygge’, the Danish concept of cosiness, especially during Christmas.

The Tivoli Gardens are transformed into a dazzling Christmas fair, adorned with festive lights, decorations, and markets. This blend of cosy Danish traditions and a festive atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination. December visitors can enjoy the quintessential Scandinavian Christmas experience.

Cruise lines such as P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines often include Copenhagen in their winter itineraries.

5. Nuremberg, Germany

Nuremberg, Germany Christmas

Nuremberg is renowned for its Christkindlesmarkt, one of the world’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets. During December, this German city transforms into a magical winter wonderland, filled with festive cheer.

The market is celebrated for its unique handmade ornaments, traditional gingerbread, and the presence of the Christkind, a symbolic figure of Christmas. Visitors can immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere, sampling traditional foods and browsing through a plethora of Christmas crafts.

Major river cruise lines that visit Nuremberg in December include Viking River Cruises and AmaWaterways, offering itineraries that focus on Christmas markets along the Danube.

6. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges at Christmas

Bruges in December is a fairy-tale-like setting, perfect for those seeking a traditional European Christmas experience. The city’s medieval architecture, including its belfry and cobbled streets, provides a picturesque backdrop for its Christmas market. Located in the main square, the market offers a range of festive goods, from Belgian chocolates to handcrafted gifts.

The scent of Belgian waffles and hot chocolate permeates the air, adding to the market’s cosy atmosphere. Ice-skating rinks add to the festive fun, offering a delightful activity for visitors of all ages. The city’s canals and historical buildings are also lit up with Christmas lights, enhancing the magical ambience.

Bruges is a popular stop on cruises during the Christmas season. Cruise lines such as P&O Cruises, MSC Cruises, Cunard and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines include Bruges in their itineraries.

7. Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg, France Christmas

Strasbourg, often referred to as the ‘Capital of Christmas’, hosts Christkindelsmärik, the oldest Christmas market in France. This market is a focal point of the city’s festive celebrations, blending French and German Christmas traditions in a unique way. The city’s half-timbered houses and historic buildings are beautifully decorated, creating a storybook Christmas setting.

The market features an array of stalls selling traditional Alsatian Christmas items, including handmade decorations, local crafts, and seasonal treats like bredele cookies and vin chaud (mulled wine). The city’s streets are adorned with festive lights and decorations, adding to the magical atmosphere.

Beyond the markets, Strasbourg is rich in culture, with museums, galleries, and live performances. Visitors can also enjoy traditional Alsatian cuisine in the city’s many restaurants and bistros.

River cruises are a popular way to visit Strasbourg during the Christmas season. Cruise lines like Avalon Waterways and AmaWaterways offer itineraries that include Strasbourg, giving travellers the opportunity to experience its renowned Christmas market and festive atmosphere.

My Recommendation

A Christmas cruise is a fantastic holiday. We took a cruise last Christmas and had a wonderful time. Check out my Guide To Cruising At Christmas for more info about the experience.

Cruising over Christmas can be expensive though. So if your budget doesn’t stretch to it, then cruising earlier in December is a great way to experience the festive atmosphere at sea without blowing your holiday budget for the whole year.

Should You Really Wait Until Black Friday to Book a Cruise? My Expert View

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year – but does that apply to cruises too?

Well, every November, cruise lines roll out flashy “can’t-miss” offers that promise huge savings and free perks. But are they really as good as they look?

cruise ship at sea

Before I became a full-time cruise blogger, I spent five years working in the marketing department at Cruise118, part of World Travel Holdings – the world’s largest retailer of cruises.

I saw exactly how these deals are created, so I know what’s genuine and what’s just clever marketing. Plus, I hand-source cruise deals every week, spending hours looking over the promotions.

So, should you actually book your next cruise on Black Friday… or wait for a better deal? Let’s find out.

The Truth About Black Friday In The Cruise Industry

Here’s the truth – there are always cruises with cabins that are hard to sell.

While the family cabins on the newest ships are selling out over a year in advance, there will always be be plenty of obstructed, oceanview cabins on older ships during the off-season that are tricky to fill.

Cruise Mummy in an orange top gives a thumbs-up while sitting on the deck of the Cunard Queen Mary cruise ship. Behind her, an orange lifeboat is visible, along with some outdoor seating and railings. She appears to be enjoying her time on the ship.

So, cruise lines use traditional sale periods like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the January Sales to drop the prices on anything that might otherwise go unsold.

But… if that’s all they did, you’d notice, wouldn’t you? You’d be like: “Hmmm, why can I not find any August sailings on the Black Friday page?”

So what you’ll see, is sitewide offers like “Up to 75% Off The Second Guest” or “Save Up To £600 Per Cabin”.

Yes, those offers will apply to certain cruises. But they won’t apply to all of them.

That means that sometimes, if you book during the Black Friday Sales, you’ll get a great deal. But sometimes, you’ll pay exactly the same as you would have done in October.

The trick is knowing which is which – and that’s where a little insider knowledge helps.

What You Can Actually Save

Let’s be honest – cruise prices don’t usually fall off a cliff on Black Friday. You’re unlikely to find half-price cruises, but you can grab some great value if you know where to look.

Most cruise lines offer around 10–30% off, and they may also add bonuses like free drinks, onboard credit, WiFi or kids sail free.

Sometimes, those perks are worth more than a straight discount – especially if you’d have paid for them anyway.

For example, Royal Caribbean often runs “up to 30% off” plus a second offer like up to £250 off. Last year, Holland America Line offered savings of up to £800 per cabin, plus free upgrades. Princess Cruises offered discounts of up to £500 per cabin, plus free onboard spending money.

It’s important to note the phrase ‘up to’. If It says up to £800 per cabin, you can bet that you’ll probably need to book the top suite to save that much. The saving on an inside cabin will be much, much lower.

Regent Suite

The best way to tell if you’re getting a true saving is to check the historical cruise prices before you book. If they haven’t changed much, then you’ll know it’s not actually a bargain. Unless, of course, you’re getting extra value added, like free onboard credit.

How To See Historical Cruise Prices

My favourite way to see cruise prices over the past 90 days is with Cruise Critic.

It’s easy. Just search for the cruise that you’re interested in, then scroll down to the Price Insight section.

Choose your cabin type and it will show what the price was price every day for the past 90 days, like this…

Cruise Critic Price insights graph

It will also tell you whether the price you see today is low, high, or typical, based on historical prices for the cruise. Like this…

When Black Friday Cruise Deals Are Worth It

Black Friday (and a couple of weeks leading up to the actual day) can be a brilliant time to book – but only if you find a good deal.

Not every Black Friday deal is good, but some of them are unbeatable. You can find real value, especially when deals include extras and not just discounts.

A free drinks package or £300 onboard credit can be worth more than a fare discount, especially if you’d spend that money on board anyway.

Drinks package offers

Travel agents may give extra discounts on Black Friday too. That could be an extra 5% off on top of the cruise line’s price, or something like a free case of wine or a Christmas hamper.

So, even when you’ve found a cruise you like, it can be worth shopping around to make sure you’re getting it for the best price and not missing out on any free gifts.

Want to make sure you don’t miss a genuine bargain? Here’s how to stay one step ahead of the crowd.

1. Sign up for Black Friday alerts from Cruise Mummy

I’ll be watching every cruise line’s sale closely and listing them all in one place.

I’ll also share my handpicked Black Friday cruise bargains straight to your inbox so you can book the best ones before they’re gone.

Pop your email in the form above and I’ll email you as soon as the deals are out.

2. Be ready to book fast

Black Friday isn’t just one day in the cruise world. Cruise lines start releasing offers from early November, so by the time Friday 28th November rolls around, many of the best cabins may be gone.

Do your research ahead of time so that you have an idea of when and where you want to go.

And if you need to get your annual leave approved, put that request in now so that you’re ready to book as soon as you spot a good deal.

A woman with wavy hair and glasses is working on a laptop at a wooden desk in a cozy, well-decorated room. The desk is adorned with several plants, a notebook, and a cup of coffee, creating a warm and inviting workspace. The wall beside her is decorated with framed artwork and a wooden map, contributing to the creative and personal atmosphere of the space.

3. Double check it’s a good deal

Remember, perks are only perks if you’ll actually use them. So while free WiFi and drinks may sound great, if you wouldn’t have bought them anyway it may not be such a good deal.

When you spot a deal, be sure to use the Cruise Critic Price Tracker to see what the price was before the sale started.

The Bottom Line

So, should you book a cruise on Black Friday?

Yes! I do it every year and have gotten some great deals. But, don’t assume that every cruise is cheaper, just because it’s Black Friday.

Some deals are genuinely fantastic, especially when they include free perks or extra onboard credit. Others are just clever marketing with prices that haven’t really changed. The key is to compare, stay alert, and move quickly when you spot a real bargain.

I’ll be tracking every cruise line’s offers and sharing the best of the best. So if you haven’t already, sign up for my Black Friday cruise deal alerts to get my handpicked recommendations as soon as they drop.

Happy bargain hunting!

Top 5 Family-Friendly Amsterdam Attractions During Your Cruise Holiday

Amsterdam is a city known for its winding canals and historic buildings. It is a dream destination on any cruise itinerary. When traveling with your family, you’ll want to avoid the typical tourist traps and visit areas that will pique the attention of both kids and adults.

The great news is that Amsterdam is so family-friendly, and there are numerous major Amsterdam attractions within close distance of the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA).

Planning is necessary when time is limited on shore. The five best family-friendly attractions in Amsterdam are listed here, ensuring you have the perfect mix of fun, education, and the Dutch experience during your cruise vacation.

Amsterdam is listed here and will guarantee you have the best mix of fun, education, and the Dutch experience of your cruise vacation.

NEMO Science Museum

When your cruise ship arrives in the port that is close to the city center, one of the first things you can see is sure to be the NEMO Science Museum, with its futuristic ship-like structure high above the harbor. This building has five stories of interactive displays, which will make both kids and adults curious.

Children may explore science by having a good, practical time-out; building bridges, blowing enormous soap bubbles; or performing small-scale chemistry experiments. In the meantime, parents will love the way that it is educational and at the same time adds fun.

According to its own reports, NEMO receives approximately 650,000 visitors per year, making it one of the largest science centers in the Netherlands by attendance.

You should not overlook the rooftop terrace, which has panoramic views of the Amsterdam skyline and a small water playground ideal on sunny days. It is a fun and simple family adventure that families can enjoy.

ARTIS Royal Zoo

ARTIS Royal Zoo is situated directly in the center of the city and is one of the oldest zoos in Europe, making it a real family haven close to the city. ARTIS hosts wildlife of the world; whether it is lions and elephants or traditional butterflies and exotic birds, they are all here close by in well-maintained enclosures.

Another attraction is the Micropia, the global museum of microbes, which is quite an interesting place to visit as an addition, especially when you add your own children, who find science captivating. To have a less stressful time, walk the zoo’s leafy gardens or have a snack by the pond as the young ones enjoy the playground.

ARTIS is a full-day adventure located within a short distance of the cruise port tram station, and it appears to be an entirely separate world from the busy city streets.

Canal Cruise

A visit to Amsterdam is never complete without a stop in the well-known canals. Taking a cruise along the city’s canals is a relaxing and calm way for the family to admire the historic beauty of the city without having to work out tired legs.

There are numerous cruise companies, such as Blue Boat Company or Lovers Canal Cruises, which offer special family cruises or children’s cruises, including entertaining commentary, scavenger hunts, and even audio tours voiced by cartoon characters.

You will pass under dainty bridges, colorful houses, and 17th-century houses, and the entire family will have an idea why Amsterdam is referred to as the Venice of the North.

It is among the most picturesque and also one of the easiest ways to see the city’s sights, particularly when one is short on time between cruise visits.

Vondelpark

Vondelpark is an ideal spot to spend time with your family when you need relaxation after sightseeing. The largest park in Amsterdam features an open area with shade trees and winding paths, making it perfect for picnics, bike riding, or simply playing with kids.

It is possible to rent bicycles right before the park and be with the locals who spend their sunny afternoons here. The number of playgrounds is also high, and a small open-air theater offers free performances in the summer.

Within the park, one of the cafes offers ice cream or pancakes, such as t’ Blauwe Theehuis, which has a large outdoor seating area. It is a relaxing respite that leaves anyone in a state of contentment, be it a toddler or an adolescent.

Rijksmuseum

Although an art museum is not an item on the wishlist of all children, the Rijksmuseum has perfected the art of ensuring that young people are not bored. Its treasure hunts, interactive tours, and family-friendly tours make the exploration of Dutch masterpieces enjoyable and, at the same time, educational.

In 2023, 2.7 million people visited the museum, including 473,000 minors. Parents like the paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer, while children can see knights, dragons, and golden ships.

Children have an opportunity to see knights, dragons, and golden ships in the pictures, and parents enjoy Rembrandt and Vermeer paintings. The museum also has a beautifully designed outdoor garden, which is also a nice place to relax, more so in the spring when everything is in full bloom.

The Rijksmuseum is a surprisingly cheap, yet fun, family outing with a free entrance for children under 18.

Grey Skies Push Britons to Book Winter Sun Cruises as Stress Levels Rise

As the nights draw in and stress levels rise, more Britons are looking to swap grey skies for blue horizons.

Arrecife Lanzarote beach

New research from UK travel agent Cruise118.com shows searches for “winter sun holiday” have jumped by 195%, signalling a growing appetite for sunshine escapes as winter approaches.

The spike comes as International Stress Awareness Week (3rd to 7th November) helps raise awareness of stress issues, and reflects a wider trend towards wellbeing-focused travel.

Recent research found that 98% of travellers prioritise relaxation on holiday, while 62% choose beach or coastal breaks for their calming effect – a reminder that escaping to the sea is as much about mental reset as physical rest.

Cruises Offer the Ultimate Stress-Free Escape

Cruises are proving especially popular for travellers seeking easy, all-in-one holidays.

According to Lindsay Haslehurst, Head of Product & Commercial at Cruise118, cruising perfectly blends sunshine, simplicity and self-care.

“Cruise holidays bring everything together in one seamless experience,” said Haslehurst. “With accommodation and dining taken care of, guests can switch off, breathe in the fresh sea air and let the ocean do the rest.”

The move towards stress-free travel aligns with recent YouGov figures showing that one in three UK adults (34%) experienced high or extreme stress last year, and 91% felt stressed at least once.

Wonder of the Seas pool deck

Younger adults are under the most pressure, with 60% of 18–24-year-olds citing “the pressure to succeed” as a key cause, while older adults face longer-term strains linked to finances, health and isolation.

Haslehurst added:

“A cruise offers the perfect balance of adventure and tranquillity. Travellers can explore multiple destinations without the stress of constant packing and planning. Increasingly, cruise lines are developing wellness-at-sea programmes that support both physical and mental wellbeing – from spa therapies to yoga sessions and mindfulness workshops.”

Cruise118’s Tips for a Stress-Free Voyage

To help travellers make the most of their winter escape, Cruise118 has shared its top advice for effortless cruising:

1. Look for last-minute deals

Last-minute sailings can be a smart way to save money, as cruise lines often discount remaining cabins to fill ships close to departure.

If you’re flexible on dates, you could save hundreds of pounds – and enjoy an impromptu dose of winter sunshine.

2. Pack with purpose

Packing efficiently is key to a smooth holiday. Cruise lines may have specific restrictions on what can be brought onboard, so it’s worth checking before you go.

Essentials like swimwear, evening attire and comfortable shoes are musts, but overpacking can make cabin storage tricky.

3. Plan your shore time

Whether you book excursions through the cruise line or explore independently, plan ahead to make the most of your port days.

Always double-check the ship’s departure time before heading ashore – no one wants to be the person left behind on the pier.

Sun, Sea and a Sense of Calm

While winter sun holidays have always been a British favourite, the growing focus on wellness and work-life balance is giving them new meaning.

For many, a week or two at sea offers not just a break from the weather, but a way to reset and recharge.

As Haslehurst puts it:

“A winter sun holiday isn’t just an escape from the cold – it’s a proven way to unwind, reset and leave everyday pressures behind. With Cruise118, switching off becomes effortless. Set sail for sunshine, sea air and total relaxation, and make stress a thing of the past.”

Two Guests Kicked Off Royal Caribbean Cruise For Fighting

A Caribbean holiday aboard Harmony of the Seas took an unexpected turn this week after two internet personalities were removed from the Royal Caribbean ship following a fight on deck.

Streamer fight Harmony of the Seas

The altercation – which was captured on video and widely shared online – took place on 4th November as the vessel sailed from Galveston, Texas, towards Roatán, Honduras, during a seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary.

Several Incidents Onboard

According to multiple social media posts, the confrontation involved two livestreamers known online as Chicken Andy (real name David Ryan) and BlackAssDave (Dave Willis), both of whom were participating in a themed “streamer cruise” organised by content creator Ice Poseidon.

Footage from the ship’s outdoor smoking area shows the pair arguing before the dispute escalates into a brief but physical scuffle, while other passengers can be heard urging them to stop.

One Reddit user remarked that “they picked the wrong cruise for that – Royal Caribbean is a family line”.

Passengers writing online said the two men had already been warned by ship security for earlier disturbances during the voyage.

One commenter summarised that the group had “two strikes in two days” and that “some of them even had their alcohol cut off before talking their way back into it”.

Swift Consequences

After the fight, both men were detained by security, with Ryan reportedly spending time in the ship’s small holding area – often referred to by cruisers as the “brig” – before the pair were disembarked in Roatán on Wednesday.

They were left to make their own travel arrangements home.

The disagreement is said to have begun over another streamer, known as JJ, and who deserved credit for helping him gain popularity online. “It was just words at first,” one passenger wrote, “then one slapped the camera out of the other’s hand and that was it.”

A separate video filmed earlier in the voyage shows Willis arguing with other guests in the ship’s Studio B venue after blocking their view while filming – a moment that some passengers say foreshadowed later tensions.

Friends Once More?

A video later shared by Ice Posiedon, the host of the event, shows Ryan and Willis ashore in Honduras as the ship is boarding guests to leave.

You can view the video on Kick (18+ language warning).

During that video, they comment on how the girlfriend of one of the two is remaining onboard the ship, and that it appear Ryan and Willis had made up and were friends now.

Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented on the incident.

The Harmony of the Seas, one of the world’s largest cruise ships, carries over 6,000 guests and features amenities including water slides, a zip line and a full theatre.

The company’s code of conduct prohibits violence or disruptive behaviour, with offenders subject to removal at the next port of call.

As one Reddit user put it after the fight: “The cruise line won – both got kicked off with no refund.”

Norwegian Cruise Line Brings Back “Free at Sea” Ahead Of Black Friday Promo Period

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is reintroducing its signature “Free at Sea” program, replacing the short-lived More at Sea offer that launched in 2024.

NCL Norwegian Cruise Line Drinks

The return marks a return to a more familiar system for cruisers – but with some key distinctions depending on where you book.

While the core benefits are broadly the same worldwide, how guests pay for and receive the perks varies significantly between the US and UK markets.

What Free at Sea Includes

The revived Free at Sea package offers the same signature perks NCL guests have come to expect, including:

  • Unlimited Open Bar with premium spirits and 100+ cocktails
  • Specialty Dining Package (number of meals depends on sailing length)
  • 150 minutes of Starlink WiFi per guest
  • $50 shore excursion credit per port for the first guest in each stateroom
  • Free 3rd and 4th guests on select sailings

The package is widely available, from short Caribbean breaks to longer European and transatlantic voyages. It may be restricted on some voyages, but for now appears to be available across the full range of ships and sailings.

US Guests: “Free” but With Daily Gratuities

For guests booking through Norwegian Cruise Line in the US, Free at Sea is technically included at no upfront cost, but gratuities apply for certain perks:

  • $28.50 per person, per day for the drinks package
  • $20 per person, per meal for specialty dining
A bartender aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship skillfully pours a bright red cocktail into tall glasses, set against the backdrop of an elegant bar with a distinctive modern sculpture and a relaxed atmosphere.

Guests can choose to remove the drink and dining perks when booking if they prefer not to pay the gratuities – and still receive the Wi-Fi and shore excursion credit at no cost.

For travellers who plan to enjoy cocktails and specialty dining, the gratuities can still offer strong value compared to purchasing those packages separately.

UK Guests: Pay an Upfront Upgrade, No Daily Gratuities

For UK-based guests, Free at Sea works differently. Instead of daily service charges, travellers pay a fixed one-time upgrade fee, which varies by sailing length:

  • 2-day cruises: £99 per person
  • 3 – 4 days: £129
  • 5 – 6 days: £199
  • 7 – 8 days: £249
  • 9 – 10 days: £309
  • 11 – 12 days: £359
  • 13 – 14 days: £409
  • 15 – 16 days: £459
  • 17 – 18 days: £519
  • 19 – 20 days: £569
  • 21+ days: £619

Discounted prices apply to third and fourth guests sharing a stateroom.

Two refreshing drinks on a cruise ship bar, with a vibrant yellow and red frozen cocktail garnished with mint in a cup labeled 'NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE,' next to a clear drink with a lime wedge, showcasing the NCL's 'Free at Sea' indulgent beverage options.

Once that upgrade is added, guests receive all Free at Sea perks – including drinks and dining – with no additional gratuities for these perks to pay onboard (but, just as with the US version, the regular daily gratuities will still apply).

However, unlike the US model, UK guests who do not purchase Free at Sea will not receive any of the included Wi-Fi or shore excursion credit.

You can buy WiFi separately, but for many people it won’t be worth the cost when you could pay a small amount extra to also get drinks, shore excursion credit and speciality dining.

Key Differences From “More at Sea”

When NCL replaced Free at Sea with More at Sea in 2024, the goal was to refine how perks were structured and priced – but the changes proved confusing for some guests.

The 2025 relaunch of Free at Sea simplifies things again while keeping some of the improvements introduced under More at Sea.

UK guests will only notice a difference in the number of speciality dining meals and WiFi minutes, which varied depending on your stateroom category under More at Sea as well as by sailing length. Now, only sailing length makes a difference.

For US guests, the gratuity costs for the drinks package would vary by sailing length but now will be a standard daily amount.

“Free at Sea Plus” Returning Soon?

Norwegian has suggested that this change also sets the stage for the return of an enhanced package, previously known as Free at Sea Plus.

When reintroduced (name still TBD), it’s expected to include additional benefits such as the beverage package being extended to Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas.

The drinks package being removed from Great Stirrup Cay is a recent change that has disappointed loyal NCL fans.

Is Free at Sea Worth It?

For many guests, Free at Sea still represents strong value – particularly on longer sailings or for those who enjoy cocktails, specialty dining, and internet access.

But it’s not always the cheapest option.

The takeaway? Free at Sea is best for travellers who plan to use all its perks. For light drinkers or those who prefer main dining, opting out and saving the gratuities (in the US) or upgrade fee (in the UK) might make more sense.

What’s Actually Included in 2025 (And What’s Not)

Celebrity Cruises built its reputation on offering a “luxury, all-inclusive” experience – but that’s not quite the case anymore.

For a while, most fares did include drinks, Wi-Fi and tips, making it easy to think everything was covered. These days, though, the rules have changed. What’s included now depends on the fare you choose.

Celebrity Apex sailing on the ocean

Here’s a clear look at what’s still included, what’s changed, and what you’ll need to pay extra for on a Celebrity cruise.

Celebrity Cruises are not all-inclusive, although you have the option to upgrade your cruise fare to include drinks and Wi-Fi. Not all drinks will be included if you do choose this package, and you’ll still need to pay for shore excursions, too, along with tips.

This package was, for a time, included on every cruise fare under the marketing tagline “Always Included”.

That pricing model was first introduced in 2020 and ran for two years. But then in 2022, the cruise line moved to reintroduce ‘cruise-only’ fares.

At the same time, Celebrity Cruises has removed the option to book Indulge and Elevate packages, instead allowing guests to upgrade individual elements of their cruise.

You can still choose to pay for the all-inclusive upgrade, but it’s the basic one only – with a Classic Drinks Package and Basic WiFi included. And depending on your stateroom choice, you might get them included regardless.

It did include tips, too, but that changed in October 2023. Your beverage gratuities are included, but your daily gratuities are no longer covered.

Me with Celebrity Apex

Confused? I don’t blame you. Let’s take a closer look at your options…

1. Simply Sail: Celebrity’s Cruise-Only Fare

Available on all sailings going forward, Celebrity’s Simply Sail fare is the cruise-only option. This lets passengers book a cruise without paying for extras that they might not want – it’s just a standard cruise.

If you’re not someone who tends to drink a lot on your cruise, and you aren’t too bothered about connecting to the internet while you’re at sea, a Simply Sail cruise could be your best option. The fare will be lower, meaning you aren’t paying for services that you wouldn’t otherwise use.

Celebrity Beyond's cruise ship lounge deck area

Here’s what you get included if you choose a Simply Sail fare:

  • All live entertainment on the cruise ship
  • Dining in the Main Dining Room and buffet restaurants
  • Room service between 6 am and 11 pm
  • Tea, coffee, lemonade, juice, fruit punch and still water in the buffet restaurant (available 24 hours a day)
  • Still water provided on your table in the Main Dining Room

And here’s what you have to pay extra for if you book a Simply Sail fare:

  • Any drinks beyond the free options in the buffet restaurant
  • Meals in speciality dining restaurants
  • WiFi access
  • Gratuities
  • Room service between 11 pm and 6 am ($4.95 service charge)
  • Shore excursions
  • Any purchases you make in the onboard stores
  • Any medical treatments required onboard
  • Travel insurance

Of those, the only things that you have to pay for are gratuities and travel insurance. Everything else is optional.

It’s absolutely doable to enjoy an amazing Celebrity cruise holiday without paying for anything else on top of your Simply Sail fare if you aren’t someone who drinks alcohol, speciality coffees or sodas. And if you can live without wifi while at sea.

2. All Included Cruise Fare

With any stateroom on a Celebrity cruise, you can choose to upgrade to an All Included fare. If you do, then you get three perks added to your cruise:

  1. Classic Drinks Package
  2. Basic WiFi
  3. Drinks gratuities

The Classic Drinks Package includes all drinks up to the value of $12 on board. If you want to buy a drink that’s more expensive, you get $12 knocked off the price – you only pay the difference. You also get 15% off the cost of any wine bought by the bottle.

There are a lot of drinks that you can get on a Celebrity cruise for less than $10, so the package is worthwhile. You can enjoy a wide selection of beer, wine by the glass, a selection of spirits, cocktails made using the spirits included in this package, and most soft drinks.

The value of the drinks package when bought alone starts from $89 per person, per day.

Celebrity Cruises Sunset Bar

Basic WiFi is, as the name suggests, pretty basic. This is the lower WiFi package offered by Celebrity and lets you browse the internet, check your emails, and use messaging apps to stay in touch with people at home.

But you won’t be able to do anything that uses a lot of bandwidth, and that includes uploading photos to your social media. For that, you’d need to upgrade.

The Basic WiFi package used to cost from $20 per person per day, though it’s no longer available as a standalone package. You can only get it with the All-Included fare.

Your tips are no longer included on an All Included fare – you’ll need to pay for these separately.

The normal cost of tips depends on your stateroom class:

  • $18 per person, per day for Inside, Oceanview and Veranda staterooms
  • $19 per person, per day for Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms
  • $23 per person, per day for The Retreat

What Isn’t Included With A Celebrity All Included Fare?

Here’s a list of everything that you still need to pay for if you book a Celebrity cruise with an All Included fare:

  • Tips
  • Meals in speciality dining restaurants
  • WiFi if you wish to upgrade to Premium
  • Room service between 11 pm and 6 am ($4.95 service charge)
  • Shore excursions
  • Any purchases you make in the onboard stores
  • Any medical treatments required on-board
  • Travel insurance

Again, most of these are optional extras so you could book an All Included fare and not pay a penny more if you didn’t want to, expect for the tips, but it does make it clear that ‘All Included’ is not really all-inclusive.

How Much All Included Actually Costs

The cost to upgrade your cruise fare to All Included varies depending on your sailing, but roughly you should expect to pay around $90 per person, per night. It still works out better value than paying for your drinks and WiFi separately.

Whether or not it’s good value depends on how much you’ll use the WiFi or whether you want the drinks. If you think that you won’t use the WiFi and you’ll spend less than $65 or so on drinks, then it’s probably better to book a cruise-only fare and pay for your tips separately, then buy your drinks individually.

Bear in mind that you can’t book the Basic Wi-Fi package separately, though, so you’d have to pay for Premium Wi-Fi at around $35 per day.

Premium All Included

Guests who book a suite in The Retreat get a Premium version of the All Included package. This used to be referred to as the Indulge Package, although it seems like Celebrity has moved away from that name now.

Here’s what you get if you book a suite in The Retreat:

  • Premium Drinks Package
  • Premium WiFi
  • On-board Credit

The Premium Drinks Package lets you enjoy all drinks up to the value of $19, so you get a much wider choice of beers, wines and spirits along with sparkling wines, premium bottled water and more. And again, you only pay the difference on drinks costing more than $19.

The Premium Drinks Package normally costs from $90 per person, per day.

Premium WiFi allows you to do most things you want to online, including uploading photos, video calling your family, or using streaming services like Netflix and Hulu Plus (if you have your own subscription).

The speeds are still not incredible – cruise ship WiFi never is – so you might not be able to stream videos in high quality, but it should be fine if you’re just watching something on your phone in bed.

Premium WiFi normally costs $35 per person, per day.

And the extra benefit you get is onboard credit, which you can use however you want to on the ship – for shore excursions, speciality dining, or in the stores.

The amount can vary but is usually around $100-$400 per person for the cruise, depending on the length of the cruise and stateroom category.

Even with the Premium All Included package, you still don’t have a fully all-inclusive cruise as you’ll need to pay for (if you want these):

  • Tips
  • Meals in speciality dining restaurants
  • Room service between 11 pm and 6 am ($4.95 service charge)
  • Shore excursions
  • Any purchases you make in the onboard stores
  • Any medical treatments required onboard
  • Travel insurance

However, you at least get an onboard credit amount to put towards some of these. You can’t use onboard credit for medical treatments or travel insurance.

AquaClass Sky Suites on Celebrity Beyond cruise ship

Final Word

While Celebrity Cruises aren’t all-inclusive by default, you can make your holiday feel that way by choosing an All-Included fare. Just keep in mind – even with this upgrade, it’s not completely all-inclusive anymore.

Since the removal of included gratuities in late 2023, you’ll still need to budget for daily tips and any extras like speciality dining, excursions, and onboard shopping.

The good news? You now have more flexibility. Celebrity has adjusted its pricing to give guests the choice – pay less with a cruise-only fare if you don’t drink much or need Wi-Fi, or upgrade to All Included if you want those perks bundled in.

If you love a cocktail (or three), fancy a few cappuccinos, and plan to stay connected while you’re at sea, the All-Included fare will almost always work out better value than paying for drinks and Wi-Fi separately.

93% Of Travelers Say People Make The Trip: Virgin Launches New Campaign Celebrating Its People-First Approach To Travel

Technology might make travel smoother than ever, but new research reveals that nothing beats the warmth of a real human connection. New research from Talker and Virgin, based on a survey of 2,000 people in the US and UK who have taken a trip in the past two years, reveals that 93% of travelers recall a positive experience first when thinking about memorable interactions with travel staff. On average, 76% of the quality of their best trips is shaped by the people they meet, with one in four saying most or all of their experience depends on these interactions.

Personal Interactions Still Matter Most

Virgin Voyages, Brilliant LadyVirgin Voyages, Brilliant Lady
Virgin Voyages, Brilliant Lady (Credit: Virgin Voyages)

While technology continues to transform travel, the latest research shows that personal interactions remain irreplaceable.

  • 54% say their trips would be less enjoyable if all staff were replaced by AI.
  • 53% believe the people they encounter make just as much impact as the product itself.
  • Two-thirds would pay extra for travel that guarantees a great human-first experience.
  • Gen Z travelers, despite being the most tech-savvy, are the most likely to value human connection – 59% say it will become even more important to travel experiences over the next decade.
  • Nearly six times the number of respondents surveyed would rather be served by a flight attendant with personality and warmth above one who’s purely efficient (53% vs. 9%).

Virgin brings these insights to life with its latest campaign – a follow-up to the award-winning Secret Sauce film from 2024.

Featuring employees from across the Virgin companies, the new film takes viewers on a whimsical adventure across the Virgin universe — flying across the pond with Virgin Atlantic, checking in at Virgin Hotels New York, and sailing on Virgin Voyages’ newest ship, Brilliant Lady.

Throughout the journey, a message is passed between Virgin team members at each company in a lighthearted challenge to get a message from the London HQ all the way to Miami, culminating with Sir Richard Branson revealing the final line onboard Brilliant Lady in New York Harbor: “The secret sauce is you.”

Watch the campaign:

At its core, the campaign spotlights the people who make every trip with Virgin extraordinary – from Virgin Atlantic cabin crew to Virgin Hotels concierge teams to the Virgin Voyages’ Happenings Cast.

Putting People at the Heart of Innovation

For more than 50 years, Virgin has shaken up industries by combining bold innovation with people-first leadership. Virgin Atlantic was the first airline to introduce seatback entertainment on planes, pioneered mood lighting and onboard social spaces, and is now leading the way as the first UK airline to roll out Starlink Wi-Fi fleetwide. On the seas, Virgin Voyages redefined cruising with kid-free voyages and introduced the Virgin Voyages App, empowering guests to personalize their experience from their smartphones. Virgin Hotels also puts control in guests’ hands with its mobile app, Lucy, which lets users check in, adjust room settings, order services, and even chat with staff – all from their phone.

Today, Virgin uses AI across its brands to free people to do what only humans can: connect, care, and create. From Virgin Media O2’s Daisy AI to Virgin Voyages’ ViVi digital assistant – and Virgin Atlantic’s new OpenAI-powered concierge – technology enables employees to focus on meaningful interactions that enhance the customer experience.

“This new data reinforces what we’ve always known at Virgin: great travel experiences start with great people,” said Sam Kelly, Chief Experience Officer at Virgin Group. “Even as technology transforms the way we travel, it’s our people who turn moments into memories. From the cabin crew who make you feel at home at 35,000 feet to the concierge who knows just what you need after a long flight, that’s the magic you can’t automate.”

“For more than 50 years, Virgin has been on an incredible adventure – constantly shaking things up, embracing technology, and redefining how the world travels. But while our innovations keep us moving forward, it’s our people who make our customers’ journeys truly extraordinary. They don’t just make the Virgin adventure happen – they experience it, drive it, and bring it to life in everything they do,” added Nikki Humphrey, Chief People Officer at Virgin Group.

The Virgin Way

The campaign reinforces Virgin’s core promise: whether traveling by air, land, or sea, travelers can expect the same extraordinary level of customer service from every Virgin company. At Virgin, innovation may drive the journey, but people will always define it.
