MSC Fantastica Experience: Game-Changer Or Waste Of Money?

Booking an MSC cruise? It’s not just about picking your cabin – you also have to choose an experience. And yes, that choice can seriously affect your trip.

From dining times to cabin locations and added perks, your experience level matters. Bella is the basic one, Fantastica is a step up, and Aurea is the fancy top-tier.

In this post, I’m diving into the Fantastica Experience – what you get, what you don’t, and whether it’s actually worth the upgrade.

Me on Fantastica Balcony

MSC Cruises Fantastica Package

The Fantastica experience is the mid-level cruise package available when you book an MSC cruise. It allows you to select your cabin and location, and request either early or late dining. It comes with a small selection of other perks.

When you book with MSC Cruises, you have to choose an experience – these aren’t optional. The Bella experience is the most basic and also the cheapest, while Fantastica is the mid-range option.

The main reason for choosing Fantastica, for most people (me included) is the chance to choose your room and avoid any undesirable cabins, like these ones that have metal rather than glass fronts…

The Aurea package is more of an upgrade for people who want a lot of additional benefits added in. You can read more about the differences between the packages here: MSC Bella Vs Fantastica Vs Aurea.

What’s Included In The MSC Fantastica Package

Firstly, remember that Fantastica is an upgrade on the Bella package, so you get everything that you would get with a Bella experience, plus some extras.

Here’s everything you get with the Bella experience, which you also get with Fantastica:

  • Your accommodation, meals in the main dining room and buffet, and live entertainment
  • The option to book a discounted drinks package when you book your cruise
  • Access to the swimming pools, sports facilities and gym
  • Kids clubs
  • Earn loyalty points for the MSC Voyagers Club every time you cruise

The Bella experience is very much what you would consider to be the basic cruise experience.

So you get your room and you don’t have to pay extra for your dining if you stick to the main dining rooms or the buffet restaurant, that’s all included.

As is your live entertainment, which is the nightly theatre shows taking place on most days of your cruise. This doesn’t mean all of your entertainment is free, though – some features may have an additional cost.

Performers on stage aboard MSC cruise

There are some things that are always free to use though, including the swimming pools and the sports facilities – including the walking/running track, basketball and so on. The gym’s free too, so if you’re in the mood to burn off that buffet meal you’ve just indulged on, you always can.

The kids’ clubs are always free too, so during normal activity hours, you can drop them off and let them enjoy a wide range of activities with the other children on board. Services like babysitting late at night may have additional costs, though.

MSC kids club

Finally, every time you cruise, you’ll earn points towards the MSC loyalty programme, which is called the MSC Voyagers Club. These points will earn you rewards for future cruises with MSC.

Read more: What’s Included in MSC Cruises

So, what else do you get with Fantastica that you don’t get with Bella? Here are the perks…

Here are the benefits of upgrading to a Fantastica experience:

  • The chance to choose your own cabin and location on the ship
  • One free change to your cruise (cabin or cruise date)
  • Breakfast served in your cabin with free delivery
  • 20% discount on a speciality restaurant pre-paid package
  • Chance to request your preferred dinner sitting (subject to availability)

Now, let’s take a closer look at each of the Fantastica perks to help you decide if it’s worth the extra cost…

Choose Your Own Cabin Number

The main reason people tend to choose Fantastica is the chance to choose your cabin number, since it means you’ve got a better chance of getting one of the better rooms on the ship.

The Bella cabins are usually in undesirable locations, such as right at the top front, where you will feel the movement more and so are more likely to suffer from seasickness. The Fantastica cabins, however, have the best mid-ship locations.

This is the Fantastica balcony cabin that we stayed in onboard MSC Virtuosa:

Fantastica balcony cabin on MSC Virtuosa

We had previously booked a Bella balcony, but it was right at the front and MSC Virtuosa is a very big ship, so we didn’t fancy all of that walking with two young kids.

Nipping back to your room for your sunglasses can be a 15-minute job if your cabin isn’t in a convenient spot. And don’t get me started on carrying sleeping children while wearing heels!

The Bella balcony room also had a metal balcony rather than glass, which meant that our children wouldn’t have been able to see the view.

So, before the cruise, we paid an extra £80 to upgrade to a Fantastica balcony, which I think was worth it.

With the Fantastica package, you get one free change to your cruise. With Bella, if you need to change your cabin or your sailing date, you need to pay an additional fee, which we did.

Free Breakfast Room Service

A nice touch with Fantastica is the free breakfast served in your room. Room service normally has a delivery charge, and outside of breakfast, you have to pay for the items you order, too. But at breakfast time, Fantastica guests get both the food and the delivery for free.

To order, you just hang this card on your door handle before you go to bed.

MSC cruise breakfast menu

On the other side is the room service menu, so you just write how many you would like of each item.

MSC cruise breakfast menu

Speciality Dining Discount

With MSC Cruises, you can also book a speciality dining package, paid up front, to allow you to experience some of the different restaurants on board. Do this with a Fantastica experience package and you’ll save 20% compared to if you wait until you’re on the ship.

MSC Speciality Dining Packages

If you like speciality dining, this could make the upgrade worth it for you. But really, I think it’s just a way for MSC Cruises to encourage more people to book multiple dining experiences.

Choice Of Dining Sitting

Finally, you’ll also have the chance to request your preferred dinner sitting, either early or late. The actual times will vary, but you’ll be assigned a time either in the early window (usually 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm) or the late one (usually 7.45 pm to 9.45 pm).

That doesn’t mean you can pick a time, but if you request early, it means you’ll be given a time between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm, and that’s when you’re expected to turn up.

These are subject to availability, with guests assigned their seating in priority order from the Suites down, so there’s a chance you won’t get your requested time still if you book an Inside cabin.

Also, those times are just an example and the actual times for each sitting can vary depending on the ship and itinerary.

If you’re given a time that you don’t want, you can always try to change it. If you have a particular reason, such as young kids who can’t wait until 9 pm to eat dinner, then you have a very high chance of success, particularly if you booked Fantastica.

But even if you booked Bella and you just don’t fancy that time, then it’s still definitely worth asking if you want to switch.

The Difference Between MSC Bella And Fantastica

The main difference between MSC Bella and MSC Fantastica is that Fantastica gives you more choice – choice of where your cabin will be, and when you’ll eat dinner.

Experience Benefits Bella Fantastica
Opportunity to choose your cabin and location NO YES
Change your cruise for a fee YES NO
One Free Cruise Change NO YES

Main Dining Room and Buffet restaurants included YES YES
20% discount on speciality dining package NO YES

The Cost Of A Fantastica Experience

What’s clear is that the Fantastica experience is an upgrade – you wouldn’t choose the Bella experience over the Fantastica if both cost exactly the same.

So, how much does Fantastica cost?

There isn’t a fixed price, and it’ll depend on your cruise date and how sold out the ship is. Generally, the cost to upgrade from Bella to Fantastica will cost around £50-100 ($60-120) per person, but it may be more depending on your itinerary.

There may even be some cruises where Bella is not an option, and you have to book Fantastica – but if you do, then the cost will already be included in your fare. You might think that it’s free, but it just means that you aren’t seeing the lower Bella costs. The extra fee is incorporated into the fare you’re paying.

This will happen when all of the cheapest cabins have sold out, those that are in less desirable locations on the ship. MSC doesn’t want you to get the benefits of Fantastica without paying for them, so it puts a limit on how many people can book Bella instead.

Sorry if you saw a ‘free’ Fantastica upgrade and thought you were getting a great deal – it just means you’re a little late, and Fantastica is the minimum option available!

MSC Seascape deck

Final Word

So the big question is whether Fantastica is worth paying the upgrade price, or if you’re better off sticking to Bella.

With a lot of options for different cruise packages, you’re able to pay extra for the benefits if you decide not to upgrade, which means you can pick and choose the things that matter most to you. But that doesn’t work with MSC.

If you decide to book Bella, you can’t then pay a fee to request a different dining sitting, or to change your cabin location.

So you have to look at the benefits that Fantastica offers, and decide whether they’re something that matters to you.

The main reasons to upgrade would be if you cared about the location of your cabin, and if you want to have more of a choice when it comes to eating in the main dining rooms.

If you’re not that bothered about where your cabin is, and you will spend more evenings eating in the buffet restaurant, Fantastica probably isn’t worth it, and you might as well get the cheapest MSC cruise you can with Bella.

Bella inside cabin on MSC Virtuosa

But if you want the best views, or to be closer to the elevators, and you do want to make sure you avoid a super-early or super-late dinner sitting time, then pay for the upgrade.

The other perks – the free breakfast in your room, the speciality restaurant package discount and the free cruise change – are nice to have. The cruise change is only useful if something happens to cause you to move your cruise, and your travel insurance may cover you for that anyway.

So check the prices for the upgrade when you’re planning on sailing, and think about whether you want to control your cabin location and have a say on your dinner dining time. That’ll tell you whether you should be booking Bella or Fantastica.

Or maybe you should be booking Aurea instead. Read more about the MSC Aurea experience to see whether it’s worth paying for the top-tier package.

Second Glass Panel Shatters On Cruise Ship In One Month

Just before docking in Port Canaveral, Florida, on Sunday 29 June 2025, a glass panel on the roof of Symphony of the Seas’ Solarium unexpectedly shattered, startling nearby guests but thankfully causing no injuries.

Glass break on Symphony of the Seas

Passengers on the 228,081-gross-ton ship heard a loud “pop” overhead as the tempered panel – part of the crystal canopy above the adults-only Solarium – fractured without warning.

The broken panel extended over both the deck 15 lounge chairs and a bathroom entrance on deck 14.

Guests on board took to social media to report the incident, with several noting how close they were to the breakage.

“I was close by, it was a loud pop!” wrote one cruiser, while another remarked: “Again!!! We were right under the last glass breakage on 6/8. Every time docking in Florida.”

Photos taken by passengers showed the panel shattered but largely intact, with no visible shards scattered across the decks below.

This is likely due to the use of tempered safety glass, which is designed to break into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp pieces when compromised.

Second Glass Breakage in Under a Month

This marks the second glass-related incident aboard Symphony of the Seas this month, with a similar situation having occurred on 8th June.

During that earlier incident – also while docking in Port Canaveral – a glass wall panel at the Coastal Kitchen restaurant on deck 17 shattered, sending fragments down to a lower deck.

A quick-thinking waiter, Nitin Kumar, reportedly noticed the glass starting to crack and rushed to clear the area just before the panel gave way.

Crew members promptly closed and drained the affected pool to remove debris, and the glass was replaced within 24 hours.

What’s Causing the Panels to Fail?

While Royal Caribbean has yet to release an official statement regarding either event, many guests and observers are speculating that ship vibrations during complex docking manoeuvres may be to blame.

Both incidents happened while the vessel was navigating into Port Canaveral – movements that often involve sharp turns and engine adjustments that can cause significant vibrations.

Though hot summer weather in Florida has also been floated as a possible factor, experts suggest that temperature alone is unlikely to cause tempered glass to fail.

Instead, a combination of structural stress and ship movement is a more probable explanation.

Despite the unusual nature of these two incidents, no injuries have occurred, and crew responses have been swift and efficient.

Clean-up teams secured both affected areas quickly, and the ship’s schedule remained uninterrupted.

Symphony of the Seas is currently homeporting out of Cape Liberty in New Jersey and is operating 7-night sailings to Florida and The Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean is likely to investigate the cause of the repeated breakages to prevent future incidents, particularly as some guests are beginning to express concern.

Nonetheless, cruisers booked aboard Symphony should feel reassured. Tempered glass is used across the industry for safety, and the line’s prompt response in both cases demonstrates that safety protocols are working as intended.

Cruise Line Reveals Pricing For New Beach Destination

Cruise guests visiting Nassau, Bahamas with Royal Caribbean can now plan an exclusive, beachside escape as bookings officially open for the Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, set to open in late December 2025.

Royal Beach Club Paradise Island

The new beachfront destination promises an upscale island experience just minutes from Nassau Cruise Port, offering two beaches, three pools, ten bars, and a range of premium upgrades – all curated for relaxation, fun, and luxury.

Day Pass Pricing and Options

Royal Caribbean is offering a variety of all-inclusive passes depending on guest preferences and age:

  • Family Pass (No Alcohol)
    • $129.99 – Guests aged 13+
    • $109.99 – Guests aged 4–12
    • Free – Children aged 3 and under
  • Adult All-Inclusive (Open Bar)

All passes include access to loungers and umbrellas at the resort, as well as use of towels and lockers. There’s WiFi at the resort which is also included, as well as dining and the roundtrip ferry transportation needed to reach the resort.

However the pricing is dynamic and will likely vary depending on the ship and sailing dates. Expect these prices to be a guide – they may cost more, or there may be sale offers bringing the prices down.

Not a Cruise Exclusive

While Royal Beach Club Paradise Island is the first beach club Royal Caribbean is set to open, it is not the first privately-owned destination – the cruise line already operates two private destinations – Labadee in Haiti, and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

In a first for the cruise line, Royal Beach Club Paradise Island is not exclusively for the use of cruise guests.

Local Bahamian residents will be permitted to also use the facilities in the resort by purchasing their own day pass.

Upgrades for Every Travel Style

In addition to standard passes, guests can enhance their day with exclusive rentals:

  • Private Beach or Poolside Cabanas with dedicated attendants
  • Day beds and reserved seating
  • The Ultimate Family Cabana – a multi-level oasis with a slide, frozen drink machine, and luxury service

Guests who book a private area will get their day passes included – up to a total of 12 passes for the Ultimate Family Cabana.

For those looking for a more lively, party-centric vibe, the second-floor Party Deck at the Floating Flamingo swim-up bar offers a high-energy scene with:

  • Ocean views
  • DJ entertainment
  • Dedicated poolside service
Second-floor Party Deck at the Floating Flamingo

This is a private space available for booking that comes with up to 12 day passes included, although an additional six can also be bought for a maximum capacity of 18 guests.

Available to All Royal Caribbean Sailings Calling in Nassau

The Royal Beach Club Paradise Island will be open to all Royal Caribbean guests whose itineraries include a stop in Nassau, which means a wide variety of ships and homeports are eligible.

This includes weekend getaways aboard Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, weeklong voyages on Icon of the Seas from Miami, and sailings from Cape Liberty on Odyssey of the Seas, among others.

Since Nassau is one of the most frequently visited ports in the Caribbean, access to the exclusive club will be available to thousands of guests each week.

Because space is limited and demand is expected to be high, day passes are likely to sell out quickly – particularly on peak sailings.

Royal Caribbean recommends that interested guests secure their reservations as early as possible to ensure they don’t miss out on the experience.

More to Come: Cozumel and Lelepa Next in Line

While Royal Beach Club Paradise Island is the first of its kind for Royal Caribbean, it’s only the beginning of the cruise line’s plans for exclusive beachfront destinations.

Next in line is the Royal Beach Club Cozumel, currently scheduled to open in 2026. This new location will bring the same upscale, all-inclusive experience to the western Caribbean, offering a new way to enjoy one of Mexico’s most popular cruise ports.

Looking even further ahead, Royal Caribbean will debut its third Royal Beach Club on the South Pacific island of Lelepa in Vanuatu.

Slated to open in early 2027, the Lelepa club will be the cruise line’s first such destination in the Southern Hemisphere. These upcoming locations highlight Royal Caribbean’s continued investment in elevating the guest experience – not just onboard, but onshore as well.

43 Funny Cruise Ship Memes to Make You Smile

Cruise ship memes are a source of joy, with funny jokes spreading across the internet and bringing smiles to the faces of those who love to cruise.

Many cruise memes contain ‘in jokes’ that you would only fully appreciate once you’ve been on your first cruise. However, there are also some memes that can be enjoyed by both regular cruisers and those who are considering a cruise for the first time.

In this post, I’ve gathered some of the best cruise memes on the internet. Enjoy!

What is a ‘meme’?

A meme is a funny image with text which is often copied and spread around the internet via social media.

The word ‘meme’ comes from the Greek word ‘mimema’, meaning imitated. This is because the same images are often used with different text to create different jokes.

The correct way to pronounce ‘meme’, according to the Oxford English Dictionary is ‘meem’. Not ‘mee mee’ or ‘may may’.

You’ll find all sorts of memes on the internet, including this hilarious list of cruise memes…

Memes About Cruise Addiction

Cruising is addictive, anyone who’s cruised more than a couple of times will vouch for that. The addictive nature of cruises has given rise to many funny cruise memes on the internet. Here are some of the best ones…

Memes About Cruise Ship Food

The abundance of delicious food served on cruise ships is another source of inspiration for funny cruise memes.

Many cruise memes about food poke fun at the weight gained during cruises (the average cruiser puts on five to seven pounds on a seven-night cruise). Memes also acknowledge the fact that it’s really difficult not to overeat with all the amazing food that’s on offer on a cruise.

Memes About Drinking on a Cruise

Along with eating, a popular pasttime for many cruisers is drinking, particularly if they have a cruise drinks package to take advantage of!

Anyone who’s cruised before will appreciate that the feeling of the ship rocking can be very similar to the feeling of being a little tipsy. One good thing about that is that any little stumbles can be blamed on the ocean, rather than the five cocktails you just downed.

Memes About Cruise Crew

Cruisers all love the crew, who go out of their way to make our vacations special. Some memes are aimed at passengers, whereas others are jokes that the crew themselves will find funny and share amongst each other.

Memes About Packing for a Cruise

It’s pretty common to have a love-hate relationship with packing for a cruise. Packing before you go can be fun, especially for those who love to book many months ahead and are very organised. Packing to leave the ship at the end of your cruise, however, is never as exciting.

Memes About Rough Seas

The weather is never guaranteed on a cruise and sometimes cruise ships have some big waves to contend with. This is the source of inspiration for many weather-related cruise memes.

Memes About Cruise Passengers

A cruiser is a great place to indulge in people watching and other passengers can be the source of much entertainment, whether they’re queing for something that you wouldn’t bother to line up for, or going somewherre you’d never step foot – like the gym!

Why You Can – But Shouldn’t – Opt Out Of Carnival’s Gratuities

There are a number of reasons why you might want to consider opting out of gratuities on your Carnival cruise.

bartender on a Carnival cruise

It might be that your budget is super-stretched, or you’re not happy with the levels of service you’ve received. Perhaps you think that the gratuities are too expensive, or you may just not be used to the idea of tipping people.

A lot of people have threatened to cancel gratuities over the new Carnival Rewards program, as a form of protest…

So – can you opt out of your gratuities?

Gratuities Aren’t Mandatory

Carnival gratuities are not optional, in that they are automatically added to your account. They can be removed, but only if you visit the Guest Services desk on the ship and ask them to take them off your account. Otherwise, you are expected to pay.

Carnival Cruise Line isn’t going to make you jump through a huge number of hoops to get the gratuities removed, but they will ask you your reasoning, and they will explain the impact of your decision.

However, if you are adamant that you want them taken off your cruise account, you can opt out of paying them provided you make sure they are removed from your account.

The gratuities make up a considerable portion of the salary for the crew on the ship. If you disembark the ship without asking for them to be removed, you will be charged for them.

Generally, your cruise account is settled while you’re on the ship, but the point is that if you choose to disembark and then realise afterwards that you’ve paid gratuities, and you didn’t want to, it’s too late. By that point, you’ve been charged and you can’t get a refund.

But broadly speaking, gratuities are not mandatory. Yes, they will be added to every guest’s Sail & Sign account, unless you’ve prepaid them, but you have to go and ask for them to be taken off if you don’t want to pay for them.

Gratuities for Carnival Cruises in 2025

With Carnival cruises, gratuities cost $16 per person, per day for cabins and $18 per person, per day for suites.

Gratuities are applied to all guests, including children – only those aged under 2 are exempt. So if you’re travelling as a family group of 4 or 5, expect to pay the per-person amount for everyone.

That means a 7-night cruise for a family of four will cost $448 in gratuities. Eek!

It might sound like a lot – especially if your cruise fare was quite cheap – but remember that this is covering the excellent service that you all receive onboard.

And not just from the crew you deal with on a daily basis, but from everyone on the ship you don’t see too, who are working hard in the background to ensure your cruise is the best it could be.

It is worth noting though that there are some additional gratuities automatically added to certain purchases on a Carnival ship. An 18% service charge is applied to any drinks you buy, any speciality restaurants you visit, and some room service orders.

These aren’t covered by your daily gratuities on your account, even if you choose to prepay them.

If you want to remove or reduce your gratuities, you need to visit the Guest Services desk. Explain your decision to them, and expect to be asked questions about the standard of service you have received.

The team will likely also explain to you the ramifications of your decision – because removing gratuities does have a significant impact on how much the crew members make.

If you still wish to go ahead with it, then the team will remove them from your account and you won’t need to pay for them.

Carnival chefs

But, Should You?

I can’t stress this enough – you really shouldn’t opt out of paying your gratuities!

Carnival is an American cruise line, and so tipping is a big part of the culture for the company, even if most of the crew are hired from overseas.

If you opt out of tipping, then you’re depriving the crew of money they likely need.

And while yes, there are thousands of people on a ship, they will still feel the effects if only a handful were to opt out of paying.

Carnival crew members

As one cruiser said in response to whether you can opt out of gratuities:

"Opt out meaning pre-paying the gratuities? I believe you can. However, if you plan on not tipping those who give you an enjoyable vacation is a very mean and cruel thing to do. Ship’s employees are paid very little and tips make up the majority of their pay. They usually send almost all of their money home to support their families. I like to tip well for exceptionally great service. I know that in some cultures tipping is frowned upon but that’s a whole different story."

You also shouldn’t choose to remove gratuities from your account if you’re planning on giving cash instead.

Yes, it is nice to give cash to crew members that have earned a reward if they serve you really well, but doing that instead of paying gratuities means you’re depriving all of the crew members behind the scenes from their share.

You’re hardly likely to walk into the kitchen to pay the cooks, are you? Or down to the crew laundrette to tip the people washing your bedding?

I understand that, if you’re upset at the service you’ve received, you might not want to pay gratuities. But try to remember that the crew are typically trying their very best.

And while you can reduce your gratuities, you can’t exclude certain people. If a waiter was rude, you can’t say that you don’t want your tips going to them. The reduced amount would be split equally, as normal.

If something goes wrong, try to resolve it with Guest Services – that’s their job, to make sure your cruise is all smooth sailing.

But think twice before you ask to remove gratuities because you’ll be impacting the crew quite harshly, especially those people behind the scenes who don’t ever get cash tips.

Onboard Credit Can Be Used

You can use onboard credit on your Carnival cruise towards your gratuities if you want to. If your cruise booking includes onboard credit, and you don’t plan on drinking a lot or booking speciality restaurants, it can be a good way to make sure the staff get paid without you spending your own money.

You can only do this if you pay your gratuities on the ship though. If you wanted to prepay your gratuities before you cruise, you can’t apply onboard credit to them.

A lot of cruise bookings will include onboard credit – either as a special offer when you book, or because you’re a shareholder, or if the price of your cruise drops once you’ve already paid.

People will often use it to treat themselves to speciality dining or to some cocktails, but if you’re happy eating in the included restaurants and you have a drinks package, then putting it towards your gratuities is a good idea.

Is It Better To Prepay Gratuities or Pay Them at the End of the Cruise?

Whether it’s better to prepay your gratuities before you sail, or pay for them using your Sail & Sign card on the ship, usually depends on whether you want to pay for them with onboard credit.

If you do, then you should pay for them at the end of your cruise. You can’t use onboard credit if you’re prepaying.

Otherwise, the choice is yours but most people tend to prepay – it’s one less thing to pay for on the ship, and it means you can budget for your cruise more effectively.

Whether you choose to prepay before you sail or pay on the ship, both options are miles better than opting out.

Final Word

I would always pay the gratuities on a cruise, even if I felt like some things had gone wrong. If someone has provided excellent service, such as my cabin steward, then I will tip them extra in cash as well.

If you have a bad experience with a waiter or room steward, it’s not really fair to then opt out of paying gratuities, since it impacts so many of the crew.

But yes, technically it is possible if you want to. Just make sure you do so before you get off the ship. Otherwise, it’s too late.

8 Key Differences Between Britain’s Biggest Cruise Ships

P&O Cruises’ biggest ships, Iona and Arvia, are sisters. This means that they’re virtually identical. However, there are some important differences between the ships, so you may prefer one over the other – I know I do!

P&O Arvia

I’ve cruised on both ships. In fact in December 2022, I actually had just 6 days between cruises on them both, so I couldn’t help but compare!

And while the vast majority of features are the same, there are some really important differences that you have to consider when deciding which to sail on…

1. Swim-Up Bar

Swim-up bar on Arvia

P&O Cruises newest addition, Arvia, features an incredible swim-up bar! Whilst you may be familiar with swim-up bars in some large all-inclusive hotels, this is a very rare treat to find on a cruise ship.

You can find swim-up bars on some Amawaterways river cruise ships, but those are much smaller, with only four seats. The swim-up bar on Arvia is of a decent size, with at least 12 water seats at the bar as well as more around the edge of the pool and on the deck.

When I cruised on Arvia for the maiden voyage, the first day that the weather was warm enough, about 10 kids got into the swim-up bar pool and spent most of their time underwater.

The problem with this was that even when the sea is calm, the water in the swim-up bar isn’t! So they kept bashing into adults and hitting their heads on the bar stools.

After a while, the lifeguard ordered all of the kids to exit the pool and from that moment onwards it was adults only (even though the signage says otherwise – perhaps they will change that).

On Iona, the space has a small plunge pool instead. It’s always cold and doesn’t get used much, so I can see why P&O opted for a swim-up bar on Iona.

Annoyingly for parents of young tots, children in swimming nappies aren’t allowed to use any of the pools on Iona or Arvia. They can only use the Splash Zone which is a spray park.

If you want to swim with your baby or toddler, then you would be better to choose Britannia, Ventura or Azura as those ships have several main pools that younger kids are welcome to use.

2. High Ropes Course

High ropes course on Arvia

New ship Arvia features the ‘Altitude Skywalk’ – a high ropes experience set 54 metres above the ocean.

These kinds of activities are popular on ships such as Carnival Horizon and Norwegian Breakaway, but the high ropes course is the first time that P&O Cruises has offered any kind of adrenaline-rush activity.

I did the high ropes course and absolutely loved it! It was free of charge when I did it, but it now costs around £10 for adults and £5 for children. You don’t have to book, but it is advised – otherwise you might miss out. If you turn up early in the morning or on a port day, you won’t have to queue either.

3. Mini Golf

mini golf on Arvia

In another first for P&O Cruises, the Arvia cruise ship features a nine-hole mini-golf course. Located right beneath the high ropes course, this is a great addition that’s popular with people of all ages.

Both Arvia and Iona also have two golf nets where cruisers can practice their swing.

On Iona, the space where the golf course and high-ropes course are located instead hosts a large sports court. This is never used that much aside from by a few teenagers who play football and basketball there.

If your teen is football or basketball mad, fear not, Arvia still has a smaller sports court so they won’t miss out.

4. Escape Room

Arvia mission control

Arvia features P&O Cruises’ first escape room experience – Mission Control. Set underwater on board a fictional submarine named Arvia II, guests have to complete challenging live-action puzzles to escape.

There are two one-hour experiences to choose from – one family-friendly adventure that’s suitable for all ages and one that’s designed for adults.

The realistic 3D surroundings take guests into ocean canyons, encountering sunken cities and underwater creatures. Motion simulation and fully interactive consoles put you at the heart of the action, while 3D surround sound completes the immersive experience.

Check out this video to see more:

Mission Control costs £20 for adults and £10 for kids, so it’s not cheap, but it is a lot of fun. Children must be six or over to participate.

Both Arvia and Iona have multi-screen cinemas. The difference is that Arvia only has three screens whereas Iona has four, with the fourth screen making space for the Mission Control experience.

5. SkyDome

Arvia SkyDome

Both Iona and Arvia will feature glass SkyDomes to protect guests from the weather while they take a dip in the pool or sip cocktails on sun loungers. However, Arvia’s SkyDome is unique in that it has a retractable roof.

Arvia is designed for hot-weather itineraries such as Caribbean cruises or summer holidays in the Mediterranean.

On both ships, the SkyDome becomes an entertainment venue in the evening.

Aside from the roof, there are a few other key differences between the two SkyDomes…

On Iona, the stage is at both sides of the pool and it sometimes moves during performances to be over the middle of it.

On Arvia, however, the stage is fixed at one side and there’s also a large screen that can be used to show movies under the stars.

6. New Restaurants

Arvia Green and Co
Arvia’s new restaurant: Green & Co featuring Mizuhana

There are some important differences in the dining venues on Arvia versus Iona.

Arvia features a new restaurant called Green & Co. To cater for the increase in plant-based diets in the British population and also the fact that some people will avoid a restaurant that’s 100% vegan, this restaurant has both plant-based and fish menus.

Within Green & Co. you’ll find a new sushi bar by the name of Mizuhana. Here, you can watch expert chefs prepare your sushi in front of you.

I may be biased as I’m vegan, but the meals I had at Green & Co. were the best I’ve ever had at sea! The food is absolutely incredible!

There’s a small charge of around £3 for starters and £5 for mains, but I think that this is well worth it. Especially when you consider that many American cruise lines charge $50 or more for speciality dining experiences.

Another new restaurant for Arvia is the 6th Street Diner. This American-style diner has retro styling, with a jukebox and an all-American menu featuring dishes like fried chicken and waffles.

Arvia's American Diner

6th Street Diner is included in the cruise fare, although it’s so good that it feels like it shouldn’t be! You can enjoy all-day breakfast until 2 pm as well as evening meals.

A third new restaurant for Arvia is the Roast carvery. Located within The Quays multi-venue dining piazza, this is the perfect eaterie for Brits who enjoy a good old-fashioned Sunday Dinner with all the trimmings.

Roast on Arvia takes the place of The Boardwalk Diner on Iona. But, you won’t have to miss out on burgers as you can still get them at Taste 360 by the pool as well as 6th St Diner.

P&O Cruises’ signature restaurants Epicurean, Sindhu, The Glass House, The Keel & Cow and The Olive Grove are included on both Arvia and Iona.

7. Spa Treatments

Arvia spa
The spa on Arvia

Both Iona and Arvia will feature the Oasis Spa – a haven of tranquillity where you can relax and unwind. However, the spa on Arvia features some exclusive new treatments.

Honestly, I didn’t get a chance to visit the spa so I can’t say what they are – but this is something to check out if you enjoy being pampered on your cruise.

When cruising on Arvia, guests can visit one of the spa’s two ‘couples suites’. Each has a Turkish bath, steam room, cool room, salt sauna and an invigorating Kneipp Walk which is a pebble foot massage with hot and cold water.

8. Destinations

Arvia is based in the Caribbean during the winter months, offering fly-cruise holidays from Barbados and Antigua.

With its retractable roof and swim-up bar, it seems obvious that Arvia has been designed with warm destinations in mind. Iona, by comparison, is much more suited to cruises to cooler destinations like Norway and Europe.

P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow commented: “Arvia will be the epitome of a sunshine resort sailing year-round to the warmest climates.”

Which To Pick

There’s not a ton of differences between Arvia and Iona, but for kids who like things to do onboard, I reckon Arvia edges it.

Iona tends to offer more 7-night cruises though, and so remains a really popular option for Brits – especially those who are trying their first cruise and don’t want to commit to a full fortnight.

Iona is undergoing a refurbishment in October 2025 but it’s not clear yet whether there’ll be any changes, or if it’s just routine maintenance. If there are any changes, I’ll let you know!

NEW DEALS JUST RELEASED!
